1. Sinusoidal Wave Estimation Using Photogrammetry and Short Video Sequences

Abstract: The objective of the work is to model the shape of the sinusoidal shape of regular water waves generated in a laboratory flume. The waves are traveling in time and render a smooth surface, with no white caps or foam. Two methods are proposed, treating the water as a diffuse and specular surface, respectively. In either case, the water is presumed to take the shape of a traveling sine wave, reducing the task of the 3D reconstruction to resolve the wave parameters. The first conceived method performs the modeling part purely in 3D space. Having triangulated the points in a separate phase via bundle adjustment, a sine wave is fitted into the data in a least squares manner. The second method presents a more complete approach for the entire calculation workflow beginning in the image space. The water is perceived as a specular surface, and the traveling specularities are the only observations visible to the cameras, observations that are notably single image. The depth ambiguity is removed given additional constraints encoded within the law of reflection and the modeled parametric surface. The observation and constraint equations compose a single system of equations that is solved with the method of least squares adjustment. The devised approaches are validated against the data coming from a capacitive level sensor and on physical targets floating on the surface. The outcomes agree to a high degree.

Abstract: International audience; Inspired by the recent success of parallelized exact methods to solve difficult scheduling problems, we present a general parallel beam search framework for combinatorial optimization problems. Beam search is a constructive metaheuristic traversing a search tree layer by layer while keeping in each layer a bounded number of promising nodes to consider many partial solutions in parallel. We propose a variant which is suitable for intra-node parallelization by multithreading with data parallelism. Diversification and inter-node parallelization are combined by performing multiple randomized runs on independent workers communicating via MPI. For sufficiently large problem instances and beam widths our pro-totypical implementation in the JIT-compiled Julia language admits speed-ups between 30 − 42× on 46 cores with uniform memory access for two difficult classical problems, namely Permutation Flow Shop Scheduling (PFSP) with flowtime objective and the Traveling Tournament Problem (TTP). This allowed us to perform large beam width runs to find 11 new best feasible solutions for 22 difficult TTP benchmark instances up to 20 teams with an average wallclock runtime of about one hour per instance.

Abstract: The eccentricity transform associates to each point of a shape the distance to the point farthest away from it. The transform is defined in any dimension, for open and closed manyfolds, is robust to Salt & Pepper noise, and is quasi-invariant to articulated motion. This paper presents and algorithm to efficiently compute the eccentricity transform of a polygonal shape with or without holes. In particular, based on existing and new properties, we provide an algorithm to decompose a polygon using parallel steps, and use the result to derive the eccentricity value of any point.

Abstract: We consider tissue P systems working on vesicles of multisets with the very simple operations of insertion, deletion, and substitution of single objects. With the whole multiset being enclosed in a vesicle, sending it to a target cell can be indicated in those simple rules working on the multiset. As derivation modes we consider the sequential mode, where exactly one rule is applied in a derivation step, and the set maximal mode, where in each derivation step a non-extendable set of rules is applied. With the set maximal mode, computational completeness can already be obtained with tissue P systems having a tree structure, whereas tissue P systems even with an arbitrary communication structure are not computationally complete when working in the sequential mode. Abstract: Climate data records (CDRs) of essential climate variables (ECVs) as defined by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) derived from satellite instruments help to characterize the main components of the Earth system, to identify the state and evolution of its processes, and to constrain the budgets of key cycles of water, carbon, and energy. The Climate Change Initiative (CCI) of the European Space Agency (ESA) coordinates the derivation of CDRs for 21 GCOS ECVs. The combined use of multiple ECVs for Earth system science applications requires consistency between and across their respective CDRs. As a comprehensive definition for multi-ECV consistency is missing so far, this study proposes defining consistency on three levels: 1) consistency in format and metadata to facilitate their synergetic use (technical level); 2) consistency in assumptions and auxiliary datasets to minimize incompatibilities among datasets (retrieval level); and 3) consistency between combined or multiple CDRs within their estimated uncertainties or physical constraints (scientific level). Analyzing consistency between CDRs of multiple quantities is a challenging task and requires coordination between different observational communities, which is facilitated by the CCI program. The interdependencies of the satellite-based CDRs derived within the CCI program are analyzed to identify where consistency considerations are most important. The study also summarizes measures taken in CCI to ensure consistency on the technical level, and develops a concept for assessing consistency on the retrieval and scientific levels in the light of underlying physical knowledge. Finally, this study presents the current status of consistency between the CCI CDRs and future efforts needed to further improve it.

Abstract: Engaging marginalised children, such as disabled children, in Participatory Design (PD) entails particular challenges. The processes can effect social changes by decidedly attending to their lived experience as expertise. However, involving marginalised children in research also requires maintaining a delicate balance between ensuring their right to participation as well as their protection from harm. The resulting tensions are politically charged, affected by myriads of power differences and create moral dilemmas. We present seven case studies, drawing from two participatory design research projects. They illustrate the in-situ judgements taken to address specific dilemmas and provide nuanced insights into the trade-offs required by child-led participatory design processes. Subsequently, we identify three challenges: positioning our work to the children's carers' values, protecting ourselves, and enabling the (relative) risk-taking associated with participation for children. Abstract: International audience; This paper presents the results of a European benchmark on multiscale creep modeling for cementitious materials, performed in the framework of the COST Action TU1404 "Towards the next generation of standards for service life of cement-based materials and structures". Three micromechanical models from three research groups have been adopted for modeling the basic non-aging creep of cementitious materials. The benchmark is based on the hypothesis that creep results only from calcium-silicate-hydrates (C-S-H) and that viscoelastic behavior of all microstructural constituents are maturity-and composition-independent. By comparing model results among themselves as well as by comparing model predictions with experimental results obtained from three different laboratories, we demonstrate that creep upscaling from micrometer-sized C-S-H to centimeter-sized macroscopic samples of cement paste, mortar, and concrete, and from minutes-long creep tests at early ages to days-long creep tests at very mature ages is indeed possible. The benchmark also highlights the importance of considering micro-anisotropy of C-S-H in terms of nonspherical shapes for C-S-H hydrates.

Abstract: International audience; Big Data Analytics is a crucial component of the Big Data paradigm and deals with the extraction of knowledge from the enormous amount of data. As the number of Big Data related methods, tools, frameworks, and solutions is growing, there is a need to systematize the knowledge about the domain. Moreover, as this domain is rapidly involving, it is difficult to keep up to date with its latest and most efficient technologies; and this is thereby especially challenging for countries which have so far suffered from a lack of infrastructure in Big Data.In this article, we report on the deployment of a strategy we design, fostering the knowledge and awareness around the challenges of Big Data analytics in the West Balkan region. In particular, we describe how we joined forces across multiple European institutions in order to design bespoke actions (from, e.g. classes, to student exchanges) to be applied in Serbia and the West Balkan region over several years.

Abstract: The arts and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) have a lot in common. As part of computer science HCI is ground breaking, interdisciplinary and focused on the interactions that form part of our everyday world. As part of the arts, HCI is a lens on technology, showing us spaces where there is room to interact and create new and meaningful blended experiences. It is therefore no surprise that many researchers and practitioners in our field have and maintain creative practices alongside, and as part of their research. We explore how these dual practices relate to each other, and how we might reconcile our mindful creative experiences with the formality of research. What benefits does such duality have, and can we illustrate the value of arts practice in HCI? This pictorial curates diverse artistic practice from a range of researchers, and offers reflection on the benefits and tensions in creativity and computing.

Abstract: There is increasing public concern regarding the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during wastewater treatment, their persistence during the treatment process and their potential impacts on the receiving water bodies. In this study, we used quantitative PCR (qPCR) to determine the abundance of nine ARGs and a class 1 integron associated integrase gene in 16 wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents from ten different European countries. In order to assess the impact on the receiving water bodies, gene abundances in the latter were also analysed. Six out of the nine ARGs analysed were detected in all effluent and river water samples. Among the quantified genes, intI1 and sul1 were the most abundant. Our results demonstrate that European WWTP contribute to the enrichment of the resistome in the receiving water bodies with the particular impact being dependent on the effluent load and local hydrological conditions. The ARGs concentrations in WWTP effluents were found to be inversely correlated to the number of implemented biological treatment steps, indicating a possible option for WWTP management. Furthermore, this study has identified bla(OXA-58) as a possible resistance gene for future studies investigating the impact of WWTPs on their receiving water. (C) 2019 The Authors. Abstract: In the first part of this work we show the convergence with respect to an asymptotic parameter {\epsilon} of a delayed heat equation. It represents a mathematical extension of works considered previously by the authors [Milisic et al. 2011, Milisic et al. 2016]. Namely, this is the first result involving delay operators approximating protein linkages coupled with a spatial elliptic second order operator. For the sake of simplicity we choose the Laplace operator, although more general results could be derived. The main arguments are (i) new energy estimates and (ii) a stability result extended from the previous work to this more involved context. They allow to prove convergence of the delay operator to a friction term together with the Laplace operator in the same asymptotic regime considered without the space dependence in [Milisic et al, 2011]. In a second part we extend fixed-point results for the fully non-linear model introduced in [Milisic et al, 2016] and prove global existence in time. This shows that the blow-up scenario observed previously does not occur. Since the latter result was interpreted as a rupture of adhesion forces, we discuss the possibility of bond breaking both from the analytic and numerical point of view.

Abstract: Edge bundling techniques cluster edges with similar attributes (i.e. similarity in direction and proximity) together to reduce the visual clutter. All edge bundling techniques to date implicitly or explicitly cluster groups of individual edges, or parts of them, together based on these attributes. These clusters can result in ambiguous connections that do not exist in the data. Confluent drawings of networks do not have these ambiguities, but require the layout to be computed as part of the bundling process. We devise a new bundling method, Edge-Path bundling, to simplify edge clutter while greatly reducing ambiguities compared to previous bundling techniques. Edge-Path bundling takes a layout as input and clusters each edge along a weighted, shortest path to limit its deviation from a straight line. Edge-Path bundling does not incur independent edge ambiguities typically seen in all edge bundling methods, and the level of bundling can be tuned through shortest path distances, Euclidean distances, and combinations of the two. Abstract: The World Health Organization Global Action Plan recommends integrated surveillance programs as crucial strategies for monitoring antibiotic resistance. Although several national surveillance programs are in place for clinical and veterinary settings, no such schemes exist for monitoring antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment. In this transnational study, we developed, validated, and tested a low-cost surveillance and easy to implement approach to evaluate antibiotic resistance in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by targeting cefotaxime-resistant (CTX-R) coliforms as indicators. The rationale for this approach was: i) coliform quantification methods are internationally accepted as indicators of fecal contamination in recreational waters and are therefore routinely applied in analytical labs; ii) CTX-R coliforms are clinically relevant, associated with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), and are rare in pristine environments. Abstract: The efficient transfer of excitations between different levels of a quantum system is a task with many applications. Among the various protocols to carry out such a state transfer in driven systems, rapid adiabatic passage (RAP) is one of the most widely used. Here we show both theoretically and experimentally that adding a suitable amount of loss to the driven Hamiltonian turns a RAP protocol into a scheme for encircling an exceptional point including the chiral state transfer associated with it. Our work thus discloses an intimate connection between a whole body of literature on RAP and recent studies on the dynamics in the vicinity of an exceptional point, which we expect to serve as a bridge between the disjoint communities working on these two scenarios., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures in main text; 14 pages supplementary material

Abstract: We explore the groundstates of a few dipolar bosons in optical lattices with incommensurate filling. The competition of kinetic, potential, and interaction energies leads to the emergence of a variety of crystal state orders with characteristic one- and two-body densities. We probe the transitions between these orders and construct the emergent state diagram as a function of the dipolar interaction strength and the lattice depth. We show that the crystal state orders can be observed using the full distribution functions of the particle number extracted from simulated single-shot images., 6 pages, 3 Figures in main text. Abstract: Recent advances in guiding and localizing light at the nanoscale exposed the enormous potential of ultrascaled plasmonic devices. In this context, the decay of surface plasmons to hot carriers triggers a variety of applications in boosting the efficiency of energy-harvesting, photocatalysis, and photodetection. However, a detailed understanding of plasmonic hot carrier generation and, particularly, the transfer at metal-semiconductor interfaces is still elusive. In this paper, we introduce a monolithic metal-semiconductor (Al-Ge) heterostructure device, providing a platform to examine surface plasmon decay and hot electron transfer at an atomically sharp Schottky nanojunction. The gated metal-semiconductor heterojunction device features electrostatic control of the Schottky barrier height at the Al-Ge interface, enabling hot electron filtering. The ability of momentum matching and to control the energy distribution of plasmon-driven hot electron injection is demonstrated by controlling the interband electron transfer in Ge, leading to negative differential resistance.

Abstract: We estimate the sums \[\sum _{n\leq x}\Lambda (n)f(n)g(n)\exp (2i\pi \vartheta n)\] and \[\sum _{n\leq x}\mu (n)f(n)g(n)\exp (2i\pi \vartheta n),\] where $\Lambda $ denotes the von Mangoldt function (and $\mu $ the Möbius function) whenever $q_{1}$ and $q_{2}$ are two coprime bases, $f$ (resp., $g$ ) is a strongly $q_{1}$ -multiplicative (resp., strongly $q_{2}$ -multiplicative) function of modulus $1$ , and $\vartheta $ is a real number. The goal of this work is to introduce a new approach to study these sums involving simultaneously two different bases combining Fourier analysis, Diophantine approximation, and combinatorial arguments. We deduce from these estimates a prime number theorem (and Möbius orthogonality) for sequences of integers with digit properties in two coprime bases.

Abstract: Nanomechanical devices are becoming increasingly popular due to the very diverse field of potential applications, including nanocomputing, robotics, and drug delivery. DNA is one of the most promising building materials to realize complex 3D structures at the nanoscale level. Several mechanical DNA origami structures have already been designed capable of simple operations such as a DNA box with a controllable lid, bipedal walkers, and cargo sorting robots. However, the nanomechanical properties of mechanically interlinked DNA nanostructures that are in general highly deformable have yet to be extensively experimentally evaluated. In this work, a multicomponent DNA origami-based rotor is created and fully characterized by electron microscopy under negative stain and cryo preparations. The nanodevice is further immobilized on a microfluidic chamber and its Brownian and flow-driven rotational behaviors are analyzed in real time by single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. The rotation in previous DNA rotors based either on strand displacement, electric field or Brownian motion. This study is the first to attempt to manipulate the dynamics of an artificial nanodevice with fluidic flow as a natural force.

Abstract: After a decade of efforts to mainstream Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) across Europe, the policy momentum is now uncertain. We explore how 217 organisations perceive responsibility in relation to their work, what mechanisms they apply to promote responsible practices, and what hindrances to promoting RRI they observe. Most organisations are unfamiliar with RRI but employ diverse perceptions of responsibility and mechanisms to promote it nonetheless. Civil society organisations are primarily outward oriented; collaborating with others and hosting science events. Private companies are more internally focussed and more likely to formalise this effort in strategies and internal guidelines. Universities resemble private companies, while private and public funders use funding-specific tools to incentivise responsible practices. Our results suggest that RRI is still poorly institutionalised and that some areas lack attention among actors in the research and innovation systems. Future policy endeavours might benefit from addressing deficits and tapping into existing perceptions of responsibility.

Abstract: We report on the structural and transport properties of the smallest dislocation loop in graphene, known as a flower defect. First, by means of advanced experimental imaging techniques, we deduce how flower defects are formed during recrystallization of chemical vapor deposited graphene. We propose that the flower defects arise from a bulge type mechanism in which the flower domains are the grains left over by dynamic recrystallisation. Next, in order to evaluate the use of such defects as possible building blocks for all-graphene electronics, we combine multiscale modeling tools to investigate the structure and the electron and phonon transport properties of large monolayer graphene samples with a random distribution of flower defects. For large enough flower densities, we find that electron transport is strongly suppressed while, surprisingly, hole transport remains almost unaffected. These results suggest possible applications of flowered graphene for electron energy filtering. For the same defect densities, phonon transport is reduced by orders of magnitude as elastic scattering by defects becomes dominant. Abstract: Thermodynamic modeling of G-phase in iron-based multicomponent systems was revised and updated by means of a careful literature survey. The thermodynamic parameters were optimized based on DFT data. Additionally intermetallic phases with possible competition to G-phase in multicomponent systems were also optimized. The thermodynamic model parameters were added to multicomponent thermodynamic database and used for calculation of technological steels and possible competition between phases are tested and shown.

Abstract: Digital terrain models (DTM) based on airborne laser scanning (ALS) are an important source for identifying and monitoring archaeological sites and landscapes. However, a DTM is only one of many representations of a given surface. Its accuracy and quality must conform to its purpose and are a result of several considerations and decisions along the processing chain. One of the most important factors of ALS-based DTM generation is ground point filtering, i.e., the classification of the acquired point-cloud into terrain and off-terrain points. Filtering is not straightforward. The resulting DTM is usually a compromise that might show the surface below very dense vegetation while losing detail in other areas. In this paper, we show that in very complex situations (e.g., strongly varying vegetation cover), an optimal compromise is difficult to achieve, and more than one filter with different settings adapted to the varying degree of vegetation cover is necessary. For practical reasons, the results need to be combined into a single DTM. This is demonstrated using the case study of a Mediterranean landscape in Croatia, which consists of open areas (agricultural and grassland), olive plantations, as well as extremely dense and evergreen macchia vegetation. The results are the first step toward an adaptive ground point filtering strategy that might be useful far beyond the field of archaeology.

Abstract: We introduce and describe the multiconfigurational time-depenent Hartree for indistinguishable particles (MCTDH-X) software, which is hosted, documented, and distributed at http://ultracold.org. This powerful tool allows the investigation of ground state properties and dynamics of interacting quantum many-body systems in different spatial dimensions. The MCTDH-X software is a set of programs and scripts to compute, analyze, and visualize solutions for the time-dependent and time-independent many-body Schrödinger equation for indistinguishable quantum particles. As the MCTDH-X software represents a general solver for the Schrödinger equation, it is applicable to a wide range of problems in the fields of atomic, optical, molecular physics, and condensed matter systems. In particular, it can be used to study light–matter interactions, correlated dynamics of electrons in the solid state as well as some aspects related to quantum information and computing. The MCTDH-X software solves a set of nonlinear coupled working equations based on the application of the time-dependent variational principle to the Schrödinger equation. These equations are obtained by using an ansatz for the many-body wavefunction that is a expansion in a set of time-dependent, fully symmetrized bosonic (X = B) or fully anti-symmetrized fermionic (X = F) many-body basis states. It is the time-dependence of the basis set that enables MCTDH-X to deal with quantum dynamics at a superior accuracy as compared to, for instance, exact diagonalization approaches with a static basis, where the number of basis states necessary to capture the dynamics of the wavefunction typically grows rapidly with time. Herein, we give an introduction to the MCTDH-X software via an easy-to-follow tutorial with a focus on accessibility. The illustrated exemplary problems are hosted at http://ultracold.org/tutorial and consider the physics of a few interacting bosons or fermions in a double-well potential. We explore computationally the position-space and momentum-space density, the one-body reduced density matrix, Glauber correlation functions, phases, (dynamical) phase transitions, and the imaging of the quantum systems in single-shot images. Although a few particles in a double well potential represent a minimal model system, we are able to demonstrate a rich variety of phenomena with it. We use the double well to illustrate the fermionization of bosonic particles, the crystallization of fermionic particles, characteristics of the superfluid and Mott-insulator quantum phases in Hubbard models, and even dynamical phase transitions. Abstract: A compacted binary tree is a directed acyclic graph encoding a binary tree in which common subtrees are factored and shared, such that they are represented only once. We show that the number of compacted binary trees of size $n$ grows asymptotically like $$\Theta\left( n! \, 4^n e^{3a_1n^{1/3}} n^{3/4} \right),$$ where $a_1\approx-2.338$ is the largest root of the Airy function. Our method involves a new two parameter recurrence which yields an algorithm of quadratic arithmetic complexity. We use empirical methods to estimate the values of all terms defined by the recurrence, then we prove by induction that these estimates are sufficiently accurate for large $n$ to determine the asymptotic form. Our results also lead to new bounds on the number of minimal finite automata recognizing a finite language on a binary alphabet. Abstract: We observe a new regime of coherent XUV radiation generation in noble gases induced by femtosecond pulses at very high intensities. This XUV emission has both a reduced divergence and spectral width as compared to high-order harmonic generation (HHG). It is not emitted at a moderate intensity of the driving pulses where only high-order harmonics are generated. At high driving intensities, the additional XUV comb appears near all harmonic orders and even exceeds the HHG signal on the axis. The peaks are observed in several gases and their frequencies do not depend on the driving intensity or gas pressure. We analyze the divergence, spectral width and spectral shift of this XUV emission. We show that these specific features are well explained by high-order parametric generation (HPG) involving multiphoton absorption and combined emission of an idler THz radiation and an XUV beam with remarkably smooth spatial and spectral characteristics., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: We continue the enumeration of plane lattice paths avoiding the negative quadrant initiated by the first author in [Bousquet-M{\'e}lou, 2016]. We solve in detail a new case, the king walks, where all 8 nearest neighbour steps are allowed. As in the two cases solved in [Bousquet-M{\'e}lou, 2016], the associated generating function is proved to differ from a simple, explicit D-finite series (related to the enumeration of walks confined to the first quadrant) by an algebraic one. The principle of the approach is the same as in [Bousquet-M{\'e}lou, 2016], but challenging theoretical and computational difficulties arise as we now handle algebraic series of larger degree. Abstract: The combination of Moore's law and Dennard's scaling rules have constituted the fundamental guidelines for the silicon-based semiconductor industry for decades. Furthermore, the enormous growth of global data volume has pushed the demand for complex and densely packed devices. In recent years, it has become clear that wired interconnects impose increasingly severe speed and power limitations onto integrated circuits as scaling slows toward a halt. To overcome these limitations, there is a clear need for optical data processing. Despite significant progress in the development of silicon photonics, light sources remain challenging owing to the indirect bandgap of group IV materials. It is therefore highly desirable to develop new concepts for a silicon light source that meets efficiency and footprint requirements similar to their electronic counterparts. Here, we demonstrate an electrically driven and tunable silicon light source by matching the resonant modes of a silver nanocavity with the hot luminescence spectrum of an avalanching p-n junction. The cavity significantly enhances phonon-assisted recombination of hot carriers by tailoring the local density of states at the size-tunable resonance. Such tunable nanoscale emitter may be of great interest for short-reach communications, microdisplays or lab-on-chip applications.

Abstract: Magnetic ground states with peculiar spin textures, such as magnetic skyrmions and multifunctional domains are of enormous interest for the fundamental physics governing their origin as well as potential applications in emerging technologies. Of particular interest are multiferroics, where sophisticated interactions between electric and magnetic phenomena can be used to tailor several functionalities. We report the direct observation of a magnetic field induced long-wavelength spin spiral modulation in the chiral compound Ba3TaFe3Si2O14, which emerges out of a helical ground state, and is hallmarked by the onset of a unique chirality-dependent contribution to the bulk electric polarization. The periodicity of the field-induced modulation, several hundreds of nm depending on the field value, is comparable to the length scales of mesoscopic topological defects such as skyrmions, merons, and solitons. The phase transition and observed threshold behavior are consistent with a phenomenology based on the allowed Lifshitz invariants for the chiral symmetry of langasite, which intriguingly contain all the essential ingredients for the realization of topologically stable antiferromagnetic skyrmions. Abstract: Introduction – A new spice on the international market. Tsiperifery is a wild pepper from Madagascar belonging to the genus Piper. This new culinary spice, which is gaining gourmet notoriety due to its unique organoleptic properties and its endemic and exotic origin, is attracting a growing number of actors to harvest and trade it. Scientific challenges – This growing appetite for tsiperifery is making collection of the plant unsustainable and contributing to the degradation of Malagasy forests with the felling of lianas, as well as host trees, and subsequent deforestation. Little is known about the plant, and its trade has developed in the relative absence of any scientific knowledge. There is not even the most basic of information available regarding its geographic distribution, taxonomy, ecology or reproductive mode. Moreover, tsiperifery is regarded simply as black pepper by Malagasy and international regulations. Socio-economic challenge – Poorly paid harvesters. The peppercorns are harvested by pickers from the poorest sector of the local population, earning them a valued income, which is nonetheless derisory compared to the gains made by the other market players. Results and discussion – Lay the bases for a sustainable management of tsiperifery. This finding indicates that scientific backing aimed at reducing uncertainties about the biology, exploitation and transformation of the plant is required to establish the bases for sustainable management of the plant. We suggest supporting the sector in producing sustainably exploited tsiperifery by exploring different innovations, which would include creating a 'label' that guarantees the product's quality through association with its origin and implementing a participative process for domesticating the plant. Conclusion – Advocating for the involvement of all stakeholders. Research has limited impact in a context devoid of economic and political partners, and funders. Without the involvement of major stakeholders, it will be no time before tsiperifery finds its way into the CITES Appendix II. (Resume d'auteur)

Abstract: We consider extended spiking neural P systems with the additional possibility of so-called "white hole rules", which send the complete contents of a neuron to other neurons, and we prove that this extension of the original model can easily simulate register machines. Based on this proof, we then define red-green variants of these extended spiking neural P systems with white hole rules and show how to go beyond Turing with these red-green systems. We also discuss the number of actor neurons needed, and the relation of this model to some special variants of Lindenmayer systems.

Abstract: The theoretical possibility to use an electron microscope as a spin polarizer is studied. It turns out that a Bessel beam passing a standard magnetic objective lens is intrinsically spin polarized when post-selected on-axis. In the limit of infinitely small detectors, the spin polarisation tends to 100%. Increasing the detector size, the polarisation decreases rapidly, dropping below 10-4 for standard settings of medium voltage microscopes. For extremely low voltages, the Figure of Merit increases by two orders of magnitude, approaching that of existing Mott detectors. Our findings may lead to new desings of spin filters, an attractive option in view of its inherent combination with the electron microscope, especially at low voltage.

Abstract: Surface plasmon polaritons have rapidly established themselves as a promising concept for molecular sensing, near-field nanoimaging, and transmission lines for emerging integrated ultracompact photonic circuits. In this letter, we demonstrate a highly compact surface plasmon polariton detector based on an axial metal-semiconductor-metal nanowire heterostructure device. Here, an in-coupled surface plasmon polariton propagates along an aluminum nanowire waveguide joined to a high index germanium segment, which effectively acts as a photoconductor at low bias. Based on this system, we experimentally verify surface plasmon propagation along monocrystalline Al nanowires as thin as 40 nm in diameters. Furthermore, the monolithic integration of plasmon generation, guiding, and detection enables us to examine the bending losses of kinked waveguides. These systematic investigations of ultrathin monocrystalline Al nanowires represent a general platform for the evaluation of nanoscale metal based waveguides for transmission lines of next generation high-speed ultracompact on-chip photonic circuits.

Abstract: Model-driven engineering (MDE) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are two separate fields in computer science, which can clearly benefit from cross-fertilization and collaboration. There are at least two ways in which such integrations---which we call MDE Intelligence---can manifest: (1) MDE can benefit from integrating AI concepts and ideas to increasing the power and flexibility of model-driven techniques by means of the application of AI algorithms. (2) Conversely, AI can benefit from integrating concepts and ideas from MDE---for example, using domain-specific languages and model transformations allows domain experts to directly express and manipulate their problems while providing an auditable computation pipeline. To discuss and further stimulate such integrations, the 1st edition of the Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Model-driven Engineering (MDE Intelligence) was held on September 16, 2019 in Munich, Germany, as part of the satellite events of the IEEE/ACM 22th International Conference on Model-Driven Engineering Languages and Systems (MODELS 2019).

Abstract: We improve previous results obtained for networks of evolutionary processors — using the operations insertion, deletion, and substitution on strings — with elementary polarizations [Formula: see text] by showing that only seven processors are needed to obtain computational completeness. In the case of not requiring a special output node, only five processors are shown to be sufficient. We also prove that if the communication structure is allowed to be a directed graph without self-loops, then two polarizations are sufficient (with 12 or 17 nodes, depending on the definition). Moreover, we consider the case of not restricting the number of polarizations, thus obtaining the minimal number of three nodes for hybrid systems and even only one node where all three operations can be carried out.

Abstract: We investigate the complexity of three optimization problems in Boolean propositional logic related to information theory: Given a conjunctive formula over a set of relations, find a satisfying assignment with minimal Hamming distance to a given assignment that satisfies the formula ($\mathsf{NeareastOtherSolution}$, $\mathsf{NOSol}$) or that does not need to satisfy it ($\mathsf{NearestSolution}$, $\mathsf{NSol}$). The third problem asks for two satisfying assignments with a minimal Hamming distance among all such assignments ($\mathsf{MinSolutionDistance}$, $\mathsf{MSD}$). For all three problems we give complete classifications with respect to the relations admitted in the formula. We give polynomial time algorithms for several classes of constraint languages. For all other cases we prove hardness or completeness regarding APX, APX, NPO, or equivalence to well-known hard optimization problems.

Abstract: We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study on superfluorescence in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength regime. Focusing a free-electron laser pulse in a cell filled with Xe gas, the medium is quasi-instantaneously population inverted by $4d$-shell ionization on the giant resonance followed by Auger decay. On the timescale of $\ensuremath{\sim}10\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ps}$ to $\ensuremath{\sim}100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ps}$ (depending on parameters) a macroscopic polarization builds up in the medium, resulting in superfluorescent emission of several Xe lines in the forward direction. As the number of emitters in the system is increased by either raising the pressure or the pump-pulse energy, the emission yield grows exponentially over four orders of magnitude and reaches saturation. With increasing yield, we observe line broadening, a manifestation of superfluorescence in the spectral domain. Our novel theoretical approach, based on a full quantum treatment of the atomic system and the irradiated field, shows quantitative agreement with the experiment and supports our interpretation.

Abstract: The terahertz (THz, 30 pm – 300 pm) spectral region covers various relevant and significant real-world applications like spectral imaging [1], medical diagnostics [2] and trace gas spectroscopy [3]. But due to the lack of high-performance laser sources, it is also referred to as the "THz-gap" in the electromagnetic spectrum. To close this gap, room temperature THz emitting laser sources are needed. Up to now, GaAs-based quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) [4] are the most promising candidates to fulfil this task but they lack significant improvements within recent years concerning their maximum operating temperature and are still limited to operation at cryogenic temperatures around 200K. They are fundamentally limited by the parasitic, non-optical LO-phonon transitions (36meV in GaAs), being on the same order as the thermal energy at room temperature (kT = 26meV). Therefore, other semiconductor materials might solve this problem, including new material systems like ZnO or GaN with their larger LO-phonon energy (E LO,ZnO = 72meV, E LO,GaN = 91meV). While GaN has recently already been investigated in detail without final breakthrough concerning GaN-based QC devices, ZnO is new to this field of application. Consequently, the design and fabrication of ZnO-based QC structures has to be mastered, including a high quality epitaxial growth and well-controlled fabrication processing.
