The colour preference of the plum psyllid,Cacopsylla pruni(Hemiptera, Psyllidae), is yet poorly studied. This species is the only known vector of the ‘CandidatusPhytoplasma prunorum’, the agent of European stone fruit yellows (ESFY), a devastating disease of several cultivatedPrunusspecies in Europe. As ESFY is still uncurable, vector control, thus vector monitoring, is pivotal to protect these trees.Cacopsylla pruniis a univoltine, host-shelter-alternating species; overwintered adults migrate from conifer to wild or cultivatedPrunusspecies (family Rosaceae) in late winter-early spring. To select the most effective colour indicating the arrivals of the immigrants, yellow, fluorescent yellow, white, red and transparent sticky traps were deployed in an apricot orchard in Hungary. The two most abundant species in sticky traps wereC. pruniandC. melanoneura. Catches of white traps were significantly biased towardsC. prunias compared toC. melanoneuraspecimens. Moreover, white sticky traps were better at catching plum psyllids than the other colours. Attraction to white was strongest when immigrants from shelter plants kept arriving in the orchard, coinciding with the blooming principal phenophase of apricot trees. When the host flowering growth stage was over, catches ofC. pruniin white traps declined sharply to the level of yellow traps that was highest during this post-blooming period. We recommended white sticky traps for promptly monitoringC. pruniin apricot orchards because it is more potent and more selective than yellow ones during the critically important early flowering interval.

Paratypes of Psylla initialis: Armenia: 13 ♂, 16 ♀, Meghri, along the Megriget bank, 07.vi.1955 (Loginova), (ZIN, dry and slide mounted). Other material examined. South Korea: 4 ♂, GB, Bonghwa-gun, Chunyang-myeon, Uguchi-ri, San 49, Uguchi Valley, 37°03'27.23"N 128°49'02.96"E, 750 m, 01.vii.2017, on Salix sp. (G. Cho), (NIBR, SNU, slide mounted and in 95% ethanol). Distribution in Korea. GB (NIBR, SNU). Host plant. Salix L. (Salicaceae). Comments. New record for Korea. Only male specimens are available from South Korea. In the Korean material, the apex of the paramere is slightly narrower than in Russian specimens. Based on the Russian material (ZIN) and the original description (Loginova 1966), Psylla initialis Loginova, 1966 belongs to Cacopsylla Ossiannilsson, 1970 and we transfer the species here as Cacopsylla initialis (Loginova, 1966), comb. nov.

Specimens of Cacopsylla rhododendri from the Korean Peninsula (NHMB, NIBR) differ slightly from European material (NHMB). Cacopsylla rhododendri from Japan and the Russian Far East is probably conspecific with the Korean population representing perhaps a different species from that in Europe. In the past, pear psyllids have been misidentified repeatedly in the literature (Burckhardt & Hodkinson 1986; Luo et al. 2012; Cho et al. 2017b, 2020). Here we propose Cacopsylla kwonorum Cho & Burckhardt, nom. nov. as a replacement name for Psylla (Hepatopsylla) silvestris Kwon, 1983. The new name is dedicated to Yong Jung and Jin Hyung Kwon in recognition of their fundamental work on the Korean Psylloidea. Unknown. Comments. Cacopsylla hanlabori was described by Kwon (1983) from a single female from Korea and is, according to Kwon & Kwon’s (2020) key, similar to C. elaeagni and C. elaeagnicola. It is said to differ from related species in the body colour and head structure. Material recently collected in Japan differs from C. elaeagni in the more slender genal processes and forewings (H. Inoue, pers. comm.). Whether this Japanese material belongs to C. hanlabori cannot be judged at present. Kwon & Kwon (2020) synonymised four Chinese species with C. fulguralis which, however, are morphologically close to the Indian C. quadrimaculata (Mathur, 1975). We have not examined specimens of the four Chinese species and cannot judge if they are synonymous with C. quadrimaculata. Pending a revision of relevant type material we consider the Chinese taxa as good species: C. cyphospila Li, 2011, stat. rev., C. fluctimaculata Li, 2005, stat. rev., C. gossypinmaculosa Li, 2011, stat. rev., and C. nigrigenimacula Li, 2011, stat. rev. (misspelt as C. nigrigenimaculata). Cacopsylla fulguralis (material examined from France, Germany, Korea and Switzerland; KNA, NAAS, NHMB, SNU) differs from C. quadrimaculata (material examined from Nepal; NHMB) in the larger body size, the longer genal processes, the longer antennae and the longer apical process of the female proctiger. Cacopsylla maculiumbellatae (Li & Yang, 1987) (paratypes examined; MHNG), another close species from China, constitutes a good species. Last instar immatures of C. moiwasana have 7-segmented antennae and marginal sectasetae on the caudal plate (Inoue 2004), a combination of characters found in many Cacopsylla spp. but not in Acizzia which has 9-segmented antennae and lacks marginal sectasetae on the caudal plate (Burckhardt & Mifsud 1998). We therefore adopt the generic combination used by Inoue (2004) and Cho et al. (2019a): Cacopsylla moiwasana, comb. rev. from Acizzia. The comparison of specimens of Cacopsylla moiwasana from Korea (SNU) and paratypes of Psylla micromeli (IBSS) showed that they are conspecific. Cacopsylla pruniisa psyllid that has been known since 1998 as the vector of the bacterium ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum’, responsible for the European stone fruit yellows (ESFY), a disease that affects species of Prunus. This disease is one of the major limiting factors for the production of stone fruits, most notably apricot (Prunus armeniaca) and Japanese plum (P. salicina), in all EU stone fruit-growing areas. The psyllid vector is widespread in the Western Palearctic, and evidence for the presence of the phytoplasma that it transmits to species of Prunus has been found in 15 of the 27 EU countries. Recent studies showed that C. pruni is actually composed of two cryptic species, which can be differentiated bymolecular markers. A literature review on the distribution of C. pruni was published in 2012, but it only provided presence or absence information at the country level and without distinction between the two cryptic species. Since 2012, numerous new records of the vector in several European countries have been published. We ourselves have acquired a large amountof data from sampling in France and other European countries. We have also carried out a thorough systematic literature review to find additional records, including all the original sources mentioningC. pruni (or its synonyms) since the first description by Scopoli in 1763. Our aim was to create an exhaustive georeferenced occurrence catalog, in particular in countries that are occasionnaly mentioned in the literature with little detail. Finally, for countries that seem suitable for the proliferation of C. pruni (USA, Canada, Japan, China, etc.), we digged deeper into the literature and reliablesources (e.g. checklist)to better subtanciateits current absence from those regions. Information on the distribution ranges of these vector psyllids is of crucial interest in order to best predict the vulnerability of stone fruit producing countries to the ESFY threat in the foreseeable future. We give free access to a unique file of 1975 records of all occurrence data in our possession concerning C. pruni, which we have gathered through more than twenty years of sampling efforts in Europe or through intensive text mining. We have made every effort to retrieve the source information for the records extracted from litterature (1201 records). Thus, we always give the title of the original reference, together with the page(s) citing C. pruni and, if possible, the year of sampling. To makethe results of this survey publicly available, we give a URL to access the literature sources. In most cases, this link allows to freely download a PDFfile. We also give access to information extracted from GBIF (162 exploitable data points on 245 occurrences found in the database), which we thoroughly checked and often supplemented to make the information more easily exploitable. We give access to our own unpublished georeferenced and genotyped record from 612samples taken over the last 20 years in several European countries (Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, etc.). Theseinclude two countries (Portugal and North Macedonia) for which the presence of C. pruni had notbeen reported before.Asour specimens have been genotyped (74 sites with species A solely, 202 with species B solely, and 310 with species A+B), our new data enable a better view of the geographical distribution of the two species at the Palaearctic scale.

Cacopsylla burckhardti Luo, Li, Ma & Cai, 2012 (Hemiptera, Psylloidea, Psyllidae) is a pear psyllid species, distributed in the East Asia. The complete mitogenome of C. burckhardti is obtained in this study for the first time. The mitogenome of C. burckhardti is circular form and 14,798 bp long, which consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs and two rRNAs. The base composition is 38.80% for A, 34.89% for T, 9.99% for G and 16.33% for C, with the higher A + T contents (73.69%). The phylogenetic analysis, using 13 protein-coding genes, shows that C. burckhardti is clustered with other Cacopsylla species and nested in the Psyllidae clade within the superfamily Psylloidea.

Antennal segments 1–8 yellowish brown, segments 6–8 dark brown apically, segments 9 and 10 entirely dark brown. Genal processes yellowish brown with darker apex. Compound eyes grey, ocelli reddish brown. Pronotum yellowish brown with six light spots. Mesopraescutum yellowish brown with a light mid-line. Mesoscutum yellowish brown with six longitudinal light stripes. Legs generally dirty yellow. Forewing transparent with light brown veins. Terminalia yellowish brown; tip of paramere and female proctiger dark brown. Structure. Head approximately as wide as thorax; vertex 0.5–0.6 times as long as broad; genal processes slightly longer than vertex along mid-line, with subparallel axes, strongly narrowing in proximal half, slender in distal half, obliquely truncate apically, with long setae (Fig. 1B). Antenna 1.8–2.0 times head width; relative length of antennal segment 10 and terminal setae as 1.0: 1.0: 1.4 (Fig. 1D). Thorax moderately arched. Metatibia 0.7–0.8 times as long as head width, with well-developed genual spine and five grouped sclerotised apical spurs as 1+3+1. Metabasitarsus with two lateral sclerotised spurs. Forewing membranous, oval, 3.6–4.0 times as long as head width, 2.4–2.5 times as long as broad; pterostigma long, relatively evenly narrowing to apex; cell cu 1 slightly longer than high; surface spinules restricted to patches along wing margin and sometimes narrow fields in the middle of cells (Fig. 1F, H). Male proctiger simple, 0.4–0.5 times as long as head width, moderately to densely beset with long setae in distal four fifth. Male subgenital plate subglobular sparsely beset with long setae (Fig. 2A). Paramere about as long as proctiger; digitiform, hardly curved with subparallel fore and hind margins, evenly tapering apically ending in sclerotised, forward pointing hook which is slightly angular in dorsal view (Figs. 3B, D, 4B); beset with long fine setae on outer and inner face, except for basal quarter (Fig. 2B). Distal segment of aedeagus slightly longer than parameres, with very long and slender stalk and subrectangular apical inflation bearing a blunt hook apically (Fig. 3F). Female proctiger 1.8–1.9 times as long as head width, with almost straight dorsal outline that is weakly raised in distal third, very slender in apical third with narrowly rounded apex; beset with short setae around circumanal ring, long setae in basal half laterally, a submedian longitudinal row of very long setae on either side in apical half and dense peg setae in apical third (Fig. 2E), laterally; proctiger 4.7–5.4 times as long as circumanal ring, composed of two unequal rows of pores; proctiger 1.3–1.4 times as long as subgenital plate, which is subacute apically; covered with long sparse setae in apical three quarters laterally and ventrally, with sparse, shortish setae laterally and dense peg setae in the apical half which are longer than those on proctiger (Fig. 2F). The psyllids Cacopsylla melanoneura and Cacopsylla picta reproduce on apple (Malus &times, domestica) and transmit the bacterium &lsquo, Candidatus Phytoplasma mali&rsquo, the causative agent of apple proliferation. Adult psyllids were collected by the beating-tray method from lower and upper parts of the apple tree canopy in the morning and in the afternoon. There was a trend of catching more emigrant adults of C.melanoneura in the morning and in the lower part of the canopy. For C.melanoneura remigrants, no differences were observed. The findings regarding the distribution of adults were reflected by the number of nymphs collected by wash-down sampling. The density of C.picta was too low for a statistical analysis. The vector monitoring and how it is commonly performed, is suitable for estimating densities of C.melanoneura. Nevertheless, above a certain temperature threshold, prediction of C.melanoneura density might be skewed. No evidence was found that other relatively abundant psyllid species in the orchard, viz. Baeopelma colorata, Cacopsylla breviantennata, Cacopsylla brunneipennis, Cacopsylla pruni and Trioza urticae, were involved in &lsquo, transmission. The results of our study contribute to an advanced understanding of insect vector behavior and thus have a practical impact for an improved field monitoring.

In a faunistic survey of the jumping plant-lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) in the province of Kerman, Iran, in 2016‒2017, one undescribed species, Cacopsylla paraspiculata Lashkari & Burckhardt, sp. nov., and one species new for Iran, Colposcenia orientalis (Klimaszewski, 1970), were collected. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the two species as well as for Craspedolepta tadshikistanica Baeva, 1973. A revised checklist of jumping plant-lice from Kerman including 40 species of five families and 18 genera is presented based on literature records and recently collected material.

The confused taxonomy of the east Palaearctic pear psyllids, serious pests on cultivated pear, is reviewed. Fifty-six nominal species have been reported from Pyrus, 25 of which we consider valid and ten as not being associated with Pyrus. Our taxonomic revision suggests that, in Korea, four Cacopsylla species develop on pear: the univoltine C. burckhardti Luo et al. previously misidentified as C. pyrisuga (Foerster), the polyvoltine, seasonally dimorphic C. jukyungi (Kwon) (winter form ‘cinereosignata’ Luo et al., summer form ‘jukyungi’), commonly found in Korean pear orchards, and C. maculatili Li (winter form ‘maculatili’, summer form ‘qiuzili’ Li) previously misidentified as C. pyricola (Foerster) by some authors, as well as the probably polyvoltine but not dimorphic C. sandolbaea (Park & Lee). The former three species (C. burckhardti, C. jukyungi, misidentified as C. chinensis (Yang & Li), and C. maculatili) occur also in Japan. Keys to the adult and fifth instar immatures as well as short biological notes are provided, and C. jukyungi and C. sandolbaea are redescribed. Following nomenclatorial changes are proposed: Cacopsylla betulaefoliae (Yang & Li, 1981) = Psylla heterobetulaefoliae Yang & Li, 1981, syn. nov.; Cacopsylla bidens (Šulc, 1907) = Psylla jiangli Yang & Li, 1981, syn. nov.; Cacopsylla jukyungi (Kwon) = C. cinereosignata Luo et al., syn. nov.; Cacopsylla maculatili Li = C. qiuzili Li, syn. nov.; Cacopsylla nigella (Konovalova), comb. nov. from Psylla. The synonymy of P. obongsana Kwon with C. sandolbaea is confirmed.

Characteristics of parthenogenesis in Cacopsylla ledi (Flor, 1861) were analyzed using cytological and molecular approaches. In all three populations studied from Finland, i.e. Turku, Kustavi and Siikajoki, males were present at a low frequency but were absent from a population from Vorkuta, Russia. In a follow-up study conducted in the Turku population during 2010–2016, the initial frequency of males was ca. 10 % and showed no intraseasonal variation, but then dramatically decreased down to approximately 1–2 % level in seasons 2015–2016. Male meiosis was chiasmate with some traces of chromosomal fragmentation and subsequent fusions. In most females, metaphase in mature eggs included 39 univalent chromosomes which indicated apomictic triploidy. Only a small fraction of females was diploid with 13 chiasmate bivalents. The frequency of diploid females approximately equaled that of males. COI barcode analyses showed that triploid females (N = 57) and diploids (7 females and 5 males) displayed different haplotypes, demonstrating that triploid females reproduced via obligate parthenogenesis. The rarity of diploids, along with the lack of males' preference towards diploid females, suggested that most likely diploids were produced by rare triploid females which shared the same haplotype with the diploids (not found in the present analysis). Minimum haplotype diversity was detected in the Turku population, but it was much higher in Vorkuta with some indication for the mixed origin of the population. We suggest that functional diploids produced in a parthenogenetic population can give rise either to a new parthenogenetic lineage or even to a new bisexual species.

Based on chromosomal, molecular and morphological analyses, two new Cacopsylla Ossiannilsson, 1970 species are described, C. lapponica S. Nokkala & Ch. Nokkala, sp. nov. and C. borealis S. Nokkala et Ch. Nokkala, sp. nov. (Hemiptera, Psylloidea). C. lapponica is a rare bisexual alpine species living on Vaccinium uliginosum Linnaeus, 1753 above tree line on northern hills, where it forms sympatric populations with C. myrtilli W. Wagner, 1947. So far, the species has been found in northern Finland, Utsjoki and Kilpisjärvi, and in northern Sweden, Abisko. The chromosome number in males is 2n = 12+X(0), characteristic of psyllids. The species is easily distinguished from C. myrtilli by its conspicuously smaller size mainly due to difference in wing size. Additional morphological differences are found in the length of antennae, female genital plates and male parameres. C. borealis, in turn, is a relatively common apomictic parthenogenetic species with 5n = 60 + XXXXX living on the same host plant, Ledum palustre Linnaeus, 1753, as C. ledi (Flor, 1861) and occasionally forming sympatric populations with it. No males have been recorded in C. borealis. Its distribution range reaches at least from northern Fennoscandia to Lake Baikal in the East. C. borealis can be distinguished from C. ledi by differences in the length and width of antennae, dark brown markings on the wing and female terminal structures. For molecular analysis, a 638 bp fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene was sequenced. C. lapponica differs from the cohabitating C. myrtilli by 20 fixed nucleotide substitutions (uncor rected p-distance 3.13 %), while C. borealis differs from C. ledi by 21 fixed nucleotide substitutions (uncorrected p-distance 3.29 %). Molecular phylogeny construction (ML and BI) reveals two highly divergent clades, one comprising two bisexual species, C. lapponica and C. fraudatrix Labina & Kuznetsova, 2012, and the other clade comprising the parthenogenetic species C. borealis, C. myrtilli, and C. ledi. Within this clade, C. borealis is more closely associated with C. myrtilli than with C. ledi.
