Abstract: In this paper, a new near-field source localisation method based on signal reconstruction and clustering approach is proposed. The new method makes full use of the advantages of signal reconstruction, reconstructs the parameters related to the direction of arrival (DOA) and range of sources in cumulant domain separately, and pairs them with clustering technique. This would lead to higher resolution and better accuracy than traditional methods. By estimating the parameters separately, the authors avoid constructing a huge overcomplete basis, and reduce the computational burden. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: In modern wireless communication system, power amplifier (PA) is an important component which is expected to be operated at the region of high power efficiency, but in this region, PA is inherently nonlinear. Thus, the linearization of high power efficient PA is necessary. In this paper, direct learning architecture (DLA) and indirect learning architecture (ILA) are firstly compared. It shows that DLA is more robust than ILA. Then a baseband digital predistortion (DPD) method with DLA is proposed for power amplifier linearization based on combined look-up tables (LUT) and memory polynomial (MP) model. The main innovation is that a LUT-based approach is proposed to calculate directly the complex-valued predistorted signal. Moreover, some interpolation techniques are introduced to reduce the LUT size. The proposed DPDs are validated experimentally. Additionally, the influences of some important parameters in experimental setup, such as the number of bits of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and the instrument bandwidth, are analyzed.

Abstract: This paper investigates the widely linear processing (WLP) for the detection of circular signals, such as M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) signals and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) signals. First, a unified mathematical model is derived to describe the conjugate symmetry of general MPSK/MQAM signals. In the unified model, a phase-rotation matrix (PRM) is introduced to partition the constellation of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signals into subsets. Signals in a subset share the same PRM. Second, a widely linear receiver is proposed in each subset for MIMO detection. To avoid repetitive WLP in each subset, a widely linear sphere decoder (WLSD) is further proposed for MIMO systems. WLSD transforms the traditional sphere decoder (SD) searching for a true transmitted vector into a shrunk one by searching for the corresponding phase-rotation vector. Finally, the diversity order of WLSD is proven to be more than $N_R-\frac{N_T-1}{2}$ and less than $N_R$ , where $N_T$ (or $N_R$ ) denotes the number of transmitting (or receiving) antennas. Additional performance analysis is also conducted to quantify the signal-to-noise ratio improvement. The complexity analysis reveals that the candidate phase-rotation vectors of WLSD are no more than $(\frac{1}{2})^{N_T}$ of the SD candidates. Simulation results show that the proposed WLSD can achieve quasi-optimal bit error rate performance, while the computational complexity is reduced by more than a half compared with the Schnorr–Euchner sphere decoder.

Abstract: International audience; Homeotropic alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is one of the key modes used in commercial liquid crystal displays (LCDs) due to its advantages, such as high contrast ratios and fast response speed. Here, we report stable homeotropic LC alignment with a small pretilt angle in a nematic, negative LC host doped with additives including self-aligning agents, photoresponsive azo dyes, and reactive mesogen via an in situ self-assembled, dual-wavelength photoalignment approach. The underlying mechanism of stable, pretilted homeotropic LC alignment was further analyzed in detail. The achieved pretilted homeotropic LC cells are very stable against heat and UV light exposure and demonstrate excellent electro-optical characteristics. The experimental results show that such a noncontact, simple homeotropic alignment technique has big potential in many applications, such as high-quality LCDs, spatial light modulators, and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: International audience; Optical metasurfaces are 2D flat elements that consist of spatially arranged meta-atoms. By carefully designing the metasurface, it is possible to fully control the properties of light in amplitude, phase, and/or polarization. When merged with liquid crystals (LCs), a metasurface can act as a reconfigurable optical component enabling dynamical control of light. However, many reports ignore the influence of the meta-atom's geometry on the orientation of LCs. Here, it is proposed to synergistically merge LCs and specially designed gold metasurfaces for multiple optical functions. Gold metasurfaces are designed as a template to align the LC molecules in a resolution of ≤2 µm. Meanwhile, the aligned LCs are used to actively control the polarization of the incident light, further achieving active modulation of the plasmonic resonances of gold metasurfaces. The synergistic mergence of LCs and metasurfaces can enable a designed optical device to work simultaneously in both visible and near infrared ranges, which is highly promising for multiple applications simultaneously, such as high-resolution display, modulation, anti-counterfeiting, beam deflection, LiDAR, etc.

Abstract: The "MIcro-Surgical Anastomose Workflow recognition on training sessions" (MISAW) challenge provided a data set of 27 sequences of micro-surgical anastomosis on artificial blood vessels. This data set was composed of videos, kinematics, and workflow annotations described at three different granularity levels: phase, step, and activity. The participants were given the option to use kinematic data and videos to develop workflow recognition models. Four tasks were proposed to the participants: three of them were related to the recognition of surgical workflow at three different granularity levels, while the last one addressed the recognition of all granularity levels in the same model. One ranking was made for each task. We used the average application-dependent balanced accuracy (AD-Accuracy) as the evaluation metric. This takes unbalanced classes into account and it is more clinically relevant than a frame-by-frame score. Six teams, including a non-competing team, participated in at least one task. All models employed deep learning models, such as CNN or RNN. The best models achieved more than 95% AD-Accuracy for phase recognition, 80% for step recognition, 60% for activity recognition, and 75% for all granularity levels. For high levels of granularity (i.e., phases and steps), the best models had a recognition rate that may be sufficient for applications such as prediction of remaining surgical time or resource management. However, for activities, the recognition rate was still low for applications that can be employed clinically. The MISAW data set is publicly available to encourage further research in surgical workflow recognition. Abstract: International audience; Metasurface-based structural coloration is a promising enabling technology for advanced optical encryption with a high-security level. Herein, we propose a paradigm of electrically switchable, polarization-sensitive optical encryption based on designed metasurfaces integrated with polymer-dispersed liquid crystals. The metasurfaces consist of anisotropic and isotropic aluminum nanoaperture arrays. Optical images can be encrypted by elaborately arranging anisotropic and isotropic nanoapertures based on their polarization-dependent plasmonic resonance characteristics. We demonstrate high-quality encrypted images and QR codes with electrically switchable, polarization-sensitive properties based on PDLC-integrated aluminum nanoaperture arrays. The proposed technique can be applied to many fields including high-security optical encryption, security tags, anticounterfeiting, multichannel imaging, and dynamic displays

Abstract: In this work, we propose a novel technique based on wavelength dispersive in situ fluorescence spectroscopy (WDIFS) for diagnosing the wavelength-dependent directional charge transportation and Rayleigh scattering enhanced in-band quantum yield. For the first time, it is clearly demonstrated that the formation of the 2D electron gas in CuO/ZnO and upward Schottky barriers in ZnO/Ag facilitate the photocatalytic performance in the ultraviolet spectral range, and that utilization of the visible spectrum relies on the band alignment between the energy level of the dopants and the Fermi level of Ag. Moreover, it is shown that the wavelength-dependent in-band quantum yield can be controlled through particle size photon scattering, in which the strong Rayleigh scattering based photon harvesting brings about a significant increase in the photocatalytic performance in the ultraviolet spectrum. Eventually, it is forecast that systematic use of the proposed technique for a systematic diagnosis should help towards the production of efficient ZnO-based photocatalysts.

Abstract: Agraïments: This study was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (41571022, 41625001), the Beijing Natural Science Foundation (Grant 8151002). The application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to agricultural soils increased by 3.2 % annually from 2002 to 2010. We quantified in detail the P inputs and outputs of cropland and pasture, and the P fluxes through human and livestock consumers of agricultural products, at global, regional, and national scales from 2002 to 2010. Globally, half of the total P input (21.3 Tg P yr−1) into agricultural systems accumulated in agricultural soils during this period, with the rest lost to bodies of water through complex flows. Global P accumulation in agricultural soil increased from 2002 to 2010, despite decreases in 2008 and 2009, and the P accumulation occurred primarily in cropland. Despite the global increase of soil P, 32 % of the world's cropland and 43 % of the pasture had soil P deficits. Increasing soil P deficits were found for African cropland, versus increasing P accumulation in Eastern Asia. European and North American pasture had a soil P deficit because continuous removal of biomass P by grazing exceeded P inputs. International trade played a significant role in P redistribution among countries through the flows of P in fertilizer and food among countries. Based on country-scale budgets and trends we propose policy options to potentially mitigate regional P imbalances in agricultural soils, particularly by optimizing the use of phosphate fertilizer and recycling of waste P. The trend of increasing consumption of livestock products will require more P inputs to the agricultural system, implying a low P-use efficiency aggravating the P stocks scarcity in the future. Abstract: International audience; We report holographic fabrication of nanoporous distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) films with periodic nanoscale porosity via a single-prism configuration. The nanoporous DBR films result from the phase separation in a material recipe, which consists of a polymerizable acrylate monomer and nonreactive volatile solvent. By changing the interfering angle of two laser beams, we achieve the nanoporous DBR films with highly reflective RGB colors. The reflection band of the nanoporous DBR films can be tuned by further filling different liquids into the pores inside the films, resulting in the color change accordingly. Experimental results show that such kind of nanoporous DBR films could be potentially useful for many applications, such as color filters and refractive index sensors.

Abstract: High-resolution global maps of annual urban land coverage provide fundamental information of global environmental change and contribute to applications related to climate mitigation and urban planning for sustainable development. Here we map global annual urban dynamics from 1985 to 2015 at a 30 m resolution using numerous surface reflectance data from Landsat satellites. We find that global urban extent has expanded by 9,687 km2 per year. This rate is four times greater than previous reputable estimates from worldwide individual cities, suggesting an unprecedented rate of global urbanization. The rate of urban expansion is notably faster than that of population growth, indicating that the urban land area already exceeds what is needed to sustain population growth. Looking ahead, using these maps in conjunction with integrated assessment models can facilitate greater understanding of the complex environmental impacts of urbanization and help urban planners avoid natural hazards; for example, by limiting new development in flood risk zones. The world keeps urbanizing. This study finds that since 1985 global urban lands have expanded four times faster than previously recognized and faster than population is growing.

Abstract: Despite extensive global efforts, secondary bacterial pneumonia still represents a major cause of death in developing countries and is an important cause of long-term functional disability arising from lung tissue damage. Newer approaches to improving treatment outcomes are needed to reduce the significant morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases. Our study, using an experimental mouse model of secondary S. pneumoniae infection, shows that a multimodal treatment that concurrently targets host and pathogen factors improved lung tissue integrity and extended the median survival time of infected mice. The immunoneutralization of host protein cANGPTL4 reduced the severity of pulmonary edema and damage. We show that host-directed therapeutic strategies as well as neutralizing antibodies against pathogen virulence factors are viable adjuncts to standard antimicrobial treatments such as antibiotics. In view of their different modes of action compared to antibiotics, concurrent immunotherapies using antibodies are potentially efficacious against secondary pneumococcal pneumonia caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens., Secondary bacterial lung infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) poses a serious health concern, especially in developing countries. We posit that the emergence of multiantibiotic-resistant strains will jeopardize current treatments in these regions. Deaths arising from secondary infections are more often associated with acute lung injury, a common consequence of hypercytokinemia, than with the infection per se. Given that secondary bacterial pneumonia often has a poor prognosis, newer approaches to improve treatment outcomes are urgently needed to reduce the high levels of morbidity and mortality. Using a sequential dual-infection mouse model of secondary bacterial lung infection, we show that host-directed therapy via immunoneutralization of the angiopoietin-like 4 c-isoform (cANGPTL4) reduced pulmonary edema and damage in infected mice. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that anti-cANGPTL4 treatment improved immune and coagulation functions and reduced internal bleeding and edema. Importantly, anti-cANGPTL4 antibody, when used concurrently with either conventional antibiotics or antipneumolysin antibody, prolonged the median survival of mice compared to monotherapy. Anti-cANGPTL4 treatment enhanced immune cell phagocytosis of bacteria while restricting excessive inflammation. This modification of immune responses improved the disease outcomes of secondary pneumococcal pneumonia. Taken together, our study emphasizes that host-directed therapeutic strategies are viable adjuncts to standard antimicrobial treatments.

Abstract: Quantum dots (QDs) films or layers are extensively used for various photonic and electronic applications since recent decades. Three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures are the elegant fashion in micro-optics, microfluidics, biomedicine, and imaging. In particular, 3D photoluminescent nanostructures play an important role in detection and sensing as well as emitting systems. In this work, 3D photoluminescent structures containing QDs with feature sizes down to 80 nm are fabricated via two-photon polymerization-based direct laser writing. The photoluminescent images and emission spectra show strong local emission of blue, green, and red light from the polymer micro and nanostructures. The influence of the QDs, laser power, and writing scan speed on the resolution of the as-prepared structures is also investigated. It turns out that the presence of QDs increases the lateral resolution where the feature size of polymer lines can reach 75 nm in 3D. This promising result paves the way for the integration of single nano-emitters with a fine control of their spatial positioning in some nanophotonic devices. NRF (Natl Research Foundation, S’pore)

Abstract: Wind power, a rapidly growing alternative energy source, has been threatened by reductions in global average surface wind speed, which have been occurring over land since the 1980s, a phenomenon known as global terrestrial stilling. Here, we use wind data from in situ stations worldwide to show that the stilling reversed around 2010 and that global wind speeds over land have recovered. We illustrate that decadal-scale variations of near-surface wind are probably determined by internal decadal ocean–atmosphere oscillations, rather than by vegetation growth and/or urbanization as hypothesized previously. The strengthening has increased potential wind energy by 17 ± 2% for 2010 to 2017, boosting the US wind power capacity factor by ~2.5% and explains half the increase in the US wind capacity factor since 2010. In the longer term, the use of ocean–atmosphere oscillations to anticipate future wind speeds could allow optimization of turbines for expected speeds during their productive life spans., This study was supported by the Strategic Priority Research Programme of Chinese Academy of Sciences (grant no. Abstract: Publisher's version (útgefin grein), This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by a need for stronger harmonisation of research efforts. The procedure involved a public consultation through online media, followed by two workshops through which a large number of potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite of the diversity of the participants (230 scientists in total), the process revealed much about community priorities and the state of our science: a preference for continuity in research questions rather than radical departures or redirections from past and current work. Questions remain focused on the process-based understanding of hydrological variability and causality at all space and time scales. Increased attention to environmental change drives a new emphasis on understanding how change propagates across interfaces within the hydrological system and across disciplinary boundaries. In particular, the expansion of the human footprint raises a new set of questions related to human interactions with nature and water cycle feedbacks in the context of complex water management problems. We hope that this reflection and synthesis of the 23 unsolved problems in hydrology will help guide research efforts for some years to come., We would like to thank the members of the IAHS, EGU, AGU and IAH for supporting this initiative. Abstract: A parametric scheme for spatially correlated sparse multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel path delay estimation in scattering environments is presented in this paper. In MIMO outdoor communication scenarios, channel impulse responses (CIRs) of different transmit–receive antenna pairs are often supposed to be sparse due to a few significant scatterers, and share a common sparse pattern, such that path delays are assumed to be equal for every transmit–receive antenna pair. In some existing works, an exact common support condition is exploited, where the path delays are considered equal for every transmit–receive antenna pair, meanwhile ignoring the influence of scattering. A more realistic channel model is proposed in this paper, where due to scatterers in the environment, the received signals are modeled as clusters of multi-rays around a nominal or mean time delay at different antenna elements, resulting in a non-strictly exact common support phenomenon. A method for estimating the channel mean path delays is then derived based on the subspace approach, and the tracking of the effective dimension of the signal subspace that changes due to the wireless environment. The proposed method shows an improved channel mean path delays estimation performance in comparison with the conventional estimation methods.

Abstract: International audience; Cooperative communication can significantly enhance the efficient utilization of spectrum in wireless networks.The performance of wireless cooperative networks depends on careful medium access control and resource allocation such asrelay selection and cooperative link scheduling policy for interference management. Most of the previous centralized worksrely on precise instantaneous channel state information (CSI). In this paper, considering the impact of multi-relay linksinterference on relay selection and dynamic spectrum sharing, we propose a fully distributed relay medium access control (MAC)scheme for wireless cooperative networks based on Stackelberg game framework with only one-hop local CSI, where source nodesthat have their own information to send act as leader users and the others act as follower users. In this scenario, each relay nodeprices its spectrum resource to the corresponding source node to maximize its revenue. In addition, the proposed scheme not onlyhelps source nodes to find relay nodes by channel gains and obtain an optimal system performance, but also helps relay nodes tomaximize their revenue by asking suitable resource price. The interactions between the sources and relays leads iteratively to aStackelberg equilibrium, in which the cooperation system achieves high throughput and low transmission delay. Simulationresults are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: International audience; High speed data transmission for wireless communication in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system requires effective channel state information (CSI). CSI should be precisely estimated with low consumption of spectral resources and acceptable computational cost. To realize this goal, an effective compressed sensing (CS) based channel estimation scheme is proposed for sparse channels with large delay spreads, without prior knowledge of channel statistics and noise standard deviation. By fully considering the rank of the measurement matrix, a novel algorithm based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) and least squares (LS) methods with a new threshold is proposed for effective channel estimation. Simulation results show that with fewer number of pilots, the proposed method outperforms the compared existing channel estimation methods in a comprehensive way and approaches the optimal channel estimation performance.

Abstract: International audience; Semisupervised learning methods are often adopted to handle datasets with very small number of labeled samples. However, conventional semisupervised ensemble learning approaches have two limitations: 1) most of them cannot obtain satisfactory results on high dimensional datasets with limited labels and 2) they usually do not consider how to use an optimization process to enlarge the training set. In this paper, we propose the progressive semisupervised ensemble learning approach (PSEMISEL) to address the above limitations and handle datasets with very small number of labeled samples. When compared with traditional semisupervised ensemble learning approaches, PSEMISEL is characterized by two properties: 1) it adopts the random subspace technique to investigate the structure of the dataset in the subspaces and 2) a progressive training set generation process and a self evolutionary sample selection process are proposed to enlarge the training set. We also use a set of nonparametric tests to compare different semisupervised ensemble learning methods over multiple datasets. The experimental results on 18 real-world datasets from the University of California, Irvine machine learning repository show that PSEMISEL works well on most of the real-world datasets, and outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches on 10 out of 18 datasets.

Abstract: Reactive nitrogen (N) is created in order to sustain food production, but only a small fraction of this N ends up being consumed as food, the rest being lost to the environment. We calculated that the total N input (TN) of global food production was 171 Tg N yr−1 in 2000. The production of animal products accounted for over 50% of the TN, against 17% for global calories production. Under current TN per unit of food production and assuming no change in agricultural practices and waste-to-food ratios, we estimate that an additional TN of 100 Tg N yr−1 will be needed by 2030 for a baseline scenario that would meet hunger alleviation targets for over 9 billion people. Increased animal production will have the largest impact on increasing TN, which calls for new food production systems with better N-recycling, such as cooperation between crop and livestock producing farms. Increased N-use efficiency, healthier diet and decreased food waste could mitigate this increase and even reduce TN in 2030 by 8% relative to the 2000 level. Achieving a worldwide reduction of TN is a major challenge that requires sustained actions to improve nitrogen management practices and reduce nitrogen losses into the environment.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a road side unit (RSU)-coordinated synchronous multi-channel medium access control(MAC) scheme for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Theproposed scheme allows the on board unit (OBU) to reserveservice channels (SCHs) on the control channel (CCH) duringalmost the whole synchronous interval and supports simultaneoustransmissions on different SCHs. It enhances the performanceof VANETs and decreases the CCH congestion. Moreover, weuse RSU to record the rendezvous information and broadcastit to the OBUs. This method avoids the multi-channel hiddenterminal problem. An analytical model is developed to evaluatethe aggregate throughput on SCHs. This model takes intoaccount the following factors: non-safety message transmissionprobability in each synchronous interval, average size of thenon-safety message, and the number of OBUs. Furthermore, therequirement of obtaining the maximum throughput is computed.Simulation results are provided to validate the analytical modeland to demonstrate the improvement in throughput. The resultsindicate that the proposed scheme can provide higher aggregatethroughput than that of the Vehicular Enhanced Multi-channelMAC (VEMMAC) and IEEE 1609.4, and better performancein CCH congestion control especially under high network loadconditions.

Abstract: © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved. Nearly three-quarters of the growth in global carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels and cement production between 2010 and 2012 occurred in China. Yet estimates of Chinese emissions remain subject to large uncertainty; inventories of China's total fossil fuel carbon emissions in 2008 differ by 0.3 gigatonnes of carbon, or 15 per cent. The primary sources of this uncertainty are conflicting estimates of energy consumption and emission factors, the latter being uncertain because of very few actual measurements representative of the mix of Chinese fuels. Here we re-evaluate China's carbon emissions using updated and harmonized energy consumption and clinker production data and two new and comprehensive sets of measured emission factors for Chinese coal. We find that total energy consumption in China was 10 per cent higher in 2000-2012 than the value reported by China's national statistics, that emission factors for Chinese coal are on average 40 per cent lower than the default values recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and that emissions from China's cement production are 45 per cent less than recent estimates. Altogether, our revised estimate of China's CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion and cement production is 2.49 gigatonnes of carbon (2 standard deviations = ±7.3 per cent) in 2013, which is 14 per cent lower than the emissions reported by other prominent inventories. Over the full period 2000 to 2013, our revised estimates are 2.9 gigatonnes of carbon less than previous estimates of China's cumulative carbon emissions. Our findings suggest that overestimation of China's emissions in 2000-2013 may be larger than China's estimated total forest sink in 1990-2007 (2.66 gigatonnes of carbon) or China's land carbon sink in 2000-2009 (2.6 gigatonnes of carbon).

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To characterize phenotypes of T cells that accumulated in multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions, to compare the lesional T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire of T-cell subsets to peripheral blood, and to identify paired alpha and beta chains from single CD8(+) T cells from an index patient who we followed for 18 years.; METHODS: We combined immunohistochemistry, laser microdissection, and single-cell multiplex PCR to characterize T-cell subtypes and identify paired TCRalpha and TCRbeta chains from individual brain-infiltrating T cells in frozen brain sections. The lesional and peripheral TCR repertoires were analyzed by pyrosequencing.; RESULTS: We found that a TCR Vbeta1(+) T-cell population that was strikingly expanded in active brain lesions at clinical onset comprises several subclones expressing distinct yet closely related Valpha7.2(+) alpha chains, including a canonical Valpha7.2-Jalpha33 chain of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells. Three other alpha chains bear striking similarities in their antigen-recognizing, hypervariable complementarity determining region 3. Longitudinal repertoire studies revealed that the TCR chains that were massively expanded in brain at onset persisted for several years in blood or CSF but subsequently disappeared except for the canonical Valpha7.2(+) MAIT cell and a few other TCR sequences that were still detectable in blood after 18 years.; CONCLUSIONS: Our observation that a massively expanded TCR Vbeta1-Jbeta2.3 chain paired with distinct yet closely related canonical or atypical MAIT cell-related alpha chains strongly points to an antigen-driven process in early active MS brain lesions.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose a new method to design miniaturized compact antennas, in which it is possible to control conjointly the radiation efficiency and the bandwidth selectivity of the antenna. And this method has been validated by the realization of prototypes based on planar resonators. The geometry of these resonators has been chosen because their unloaded quality factor can be controlled and is mainly dependent on radiation loss. In a first time, a filter with a significant potential to radiation has been realized by choosing suitable miniaturized resonators. An antenna, based on the same structure, in which the output of the filter was removed (load by air resistance), can be obtained. Modification of the quality factor of each resonator is necessary to take into account the change of the load value from the previous filter to the final structure. The position and the quality factor of the resonators are determined by a filter design concept to obtain a specific frequency response in which each resonator is a basic radiation element. Load of the antenna is ultimately a distributed load constituted by the parallel contributions of each resonators to radiation loss. In other words such an antenna can also be called radiating filter.

Abstract: International audience; In civil engineering, ground penetrating radar is widely used for road pavement surveys. In contrast to the existing literature, the influence of interface roughness (surface and interlayer roughness of stratified media) is accounted for within the scope of the data processing of radar signals. The rigorous electromagnetic method PILE (propagation inside layer expansion) provides the simulated data. The observed frequency variations of the radar magnitude introduce some shape distortion on the radar wavelet. An adaptation of the root-MUSIC algorithm is proposed on the basis of the work in [4]. As a result, it is allowed to jointly estimate the time delay and the interface roughness.

Abstract: We propose the study of a planar quasi-lumped resonator element. It is composed of a shorting via, modelled as a parallel inductance and a very short open-ended microstrip line, modelled as a capacitance. We discuss the physical parameter influences of the resonator, which offer a path to control its radiation characteristic. A circuit model with closed-form expressions of the radiation resistance and the unloaded quality factor is presented. The discontinuity influences of the shorting via and the open-ended microstrip borders are discussed. The experimental and theoretical results verify the proposed circuit model. A radiation model based on the results of electromagnetic simulations has also been proposed.

Abstract: The performance of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio can be improved by employing multiple antennas. In this letter, the effect of antenna correlation on the performance improvement by deploying multiple antennas in the sensing node of the secondary system is investigated. It is proved mathematically that in the regime of low SNR, with antenna correlation, the secondary sensing node can achieve almost the same performance improvement as that without correlation. Simulation results verify the conclusions.
