Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the major causes of visual impairment and irreversible blindness in developed regions. Aside from abnormal angiogenesis, inflammation is the most specific and might be the initiating factor of DR. As a key participant in inflammation, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) can be detected in different parts of the eye and is responsible for the breakdown of the blood-retina barrier and activation of inflammatory cells and other cytokines, which accelerate neovascularization and neuroglial degeneration. In addition, IFN-γ is involved in other vascular complications of diabetes mellitus and angiogenesis-dependent diseases, such as diabetic nephropathy, cerebral microbleeds, and age-related macular degeneration. Traditional treatments, such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, vitrectomy, and laser photocoagulation therapy, are more effective for angiogenesis and not tolerable for every patient. Many ongoing clinical trials are exploring effective drugs that target inflammation. For instance, IFN-α acts against viruses and angiogenesis and is commonly used to treat malignant tumors. Moreover, IFN-α has been shown to contribute to alleviating the progression of DR and other ocular diseases. In this review, we emphasize the roles that IFNs play in the pathogenesis of DR and discuss potential clinical applications of IFNs in DR, such as diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic treatment.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a blinding eye disease which incidence gradually increases with age. Inflammation participates in AMD pathogenesis, including choroidal neovascularization and geographic atrophy. It is also a kind of self-protective regulation from injury for the eyes. In this review, we described inflammation in AMD pathogenesis, summarized the roles played by inflammation-related cytokines, including pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, as well as leukocytes (macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils, T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes) in the innate or adaptive immunity in AMD. Possible clinical applications such as potential diagnostic biomarkers and anti-inflammatory therapies were also discussed. This review overviews the inflammation as a target of novel effective therapies in treating AMD.

In this paper, we propose a transfer learning-based dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) method for classifying fibroadenoma and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) in breast tumors. A total of 207 breast tumors from patients were collected and identified by pathologic diagnosis within 15 days after enhanced DCE-MRI examination; 119 patients (average age 50.52±10.33 years) had fibroadenomas, and 88 patients (average age 42.20±10.10 years) had IDCs. Two lesion-level models were built based on the InceptionV3 and VGG19 models, which were pretrained with the ImageNet dataset. The effects of different depths of transfer learning were examined. The network's performance was evaluated through five-fold cross validation. In the lesion-level models, the model based on Inception V3 obtained better results (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.89) when the weights were frozen before layer-276. The other model based on VGG19 obtained better results (AUC = 0.87) when the weights were frozen before layer-13. Compared with the image-level models, both lesion-level models displayed better discrimination (accuracy increased by 13% and 14%) based on the VGG19 and Inception V3 models, respectively. Our research confirms that transfer learning can be utilized to classify fibroadenomas and IDCs in DCE-MRI images. Different depths of transfer learning result in different performances, and our proposed lesion-level model notably improves the classification accuracy.

Prolactinoma is a common subtype of pituitary tumors. Dopamine receptor agonists are the preferred treatment for prolactinoma; however, with this therapy, drug resistance often occurs. In our previous work, we found that partial resistant prolactinomas showed increased fibrosis and that the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway mediated fibrosis and was involved in drug resistance. Additionally, the success of surgery is known to be heavily influenced by the consistency of the pituitary adenoma. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to clarify the mechanisms of fibrosis in prolactinoma. Using high-throughput sequencing for analysis of microRNAs, we found that miR-93-5p was significantly upregulated in prolactinoma samples with a high degree of fibrosis compared with that in samples without fibrosis. Furthermore, we found that miR-93-5p was negatively correlated with the relative expression of Smad7 and positively correlated with the relative expression of TGF-β1 in clinical prolactinoma samples. In addition, luciferase reporter assays showed that miR-93-5p could downregulate the Smad7 gene, an important inhibitor of the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway, and activate TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling-mediated fibrosis in a feed-forward loop. Moreover, miR-93-5p could enhance the drug resistance of prolactinoma cells by regulation of TGF-β1/Smad3-dependent fibrosis. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that miR-93-5p may be a potential therapeutic target for inhibiting fibrosis and reducing drug resistance in prolactinoma cells.

The present retrospective study evaluated the clinical results of full-endoscopic lumbar discectomy (FELD) for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) with lumbar posterior ring apophysis fracture (PRAF) using an interlaminar or a transforaminal approach at an inpatient surgery center.Patients with single-level LDH with type III PRAF who had undergone FELD using an interlaminar or a transforaminal approach from January 2010 to December 2015 were enrolled. The general data recorded included sex, age, location, surgical approach, operative time, hospital stay, perioperative complications, and recurrence. The presence of mobile and immobile fragments was documented. The clinical outcomes were evaluated using a visual analog scale for low back and leg pain. The Oswestry Disability Index was used for the functional assessment and the modified MacNab criteria for patient satisfaction.FELD was performed successfully in all cases and no serious perioperative complications were observed. A mobile fragment of PRAS was present in 18 patients and an immobile fragment in 15 patients. Complications occurred in 2 of the 33 included patients; 1 dual tear (3.0%) and 1 transient dysesthesia (3.0%) that did not require further treatment. Recurrence developed in 1 patient (3.0%) and required reoperation. The visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index scores had significantly improved postoperatively at 3, 6, and 12 months and the final follow-up visit (P0.05). Using the modified MacNab criteria, an excellent or good rate of 93.4% was achieved.FELD is a safe and effective minimally invasive approach for the treatment of LDH with type III PRAF. Sufficient preparation and experience are required to achieve satisfactory results.

This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) diagnosis. First, long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and mRNA expression profiles in the aqueous humor (AH) from 10 POAG and 10 control patients were accessed by microarray analyses. Coding-noncoding gene coexpression networks were drawn to predict potential lncRNA functions. lncRNA T267384, ENST00000607393, and T342877 expression levels were further tested by real-time quantitative PCR in AH from 29 POAG and 30 cataract patients, in iris tissues from 16 POAG patients and 10 controls, and in plasma from 49 POAG patients and 55 healthy controls. Finally, ENST00000607393 function was characterized in an in vitro model of cell calcification. A total of 3627 lncRNAs and 2228 mRNAs in the AH of POAG patients were significantly up-regulated, and 1520 lncRNAs and 820 mRNAs were significantly down-regulated. Seven lncRNAs showed positive correlation with glaucoma-associated gene, bone morphogenetic protein 2. Moreover, real-time quantitative RT-PCR confirmed that T267384, ENST00000607393, and T342877 expression levels were significantly higher in the AH from a different cohort of POAG patients. ENST00000607393 was also significantly higher in the iris and plasma of POAG patients. Last, ENST00000607393 knockdown alleviated calcification of primary human trabecular meshwork cells in vitro. Therefore, lncRNAs T267384, ENST00000607393, and T342877 may be potential biomarkers for POAG diagnosis. ENST00000607393 might be a new therapeutic target for trabecular meshwork calcification.

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture results in thrombus formation and vessel occlusion, and is the leading cause of death worldwide. There is a pressing need to identify plaque vulnerability for the treatment of carotid and coronary artery diseases. Nanomaterials with enzyme-like properties have attracted significant interest by providing biological, diagnostic and prognostic information about the diseases. Here we showed that bioengineered magnetoferritin nanoparticles (M-HFn NPs) functionally mimic peroxidase enzyme and can intrinsically recognize plaque-infiltrated active macrophages, which drive atherosclerotic plaque progression and rupture and are significantly associated with the plaque vulnerability. The M-HFn nanozymes catalyze the oxidation of colorimetric substrates to give a color reaction that visualizes the recognized active macrophages for one-step pathological identification of plaque vulnerability. We examined 50 carotid endarterectomy specimens from patients with symptomatic carotid disease and demonstrated that the M-HFn nanozymes could distinguish active macrophage infiltration in ruptured and high-risk plaque tissues, and M-HFn staining displayed a significant correlation with plaque vulnerability (r = 0.89, P < 0.0001).

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a common disease in the elderly population. Inflammation following ICH plays a detrimental role in secondary brain injury, which is associated with a poor prognosis of patients with ICH, and no efficient pharmacological preventions are available. Here, we investigated the effects of glibenclamide (GLC) on neuroinflammation in an autoblood-induced aged rat (18 months old) model of ICH. Rats were randomized into the sham, vehicle, and GLC groups. First, we investigated the expression level of sulfonylurea receptor 1 (Sur1) surrounding the hematoma after ICH. Then, neurological scores were calculated, and water maze tests, brain water content analysis, western blotting, and immunofluorescence assays were implemented to detect the neuroprotective effect of GLC. The expression of the Sur1-Trpm4 channel was significantly increased in the perihematomal tissue following ICH in aged rats. The GLC administration effectively reduced brain edema and improved neurofunction deficits following ICH. In addition, GLC increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factors and decreased the expression of proinflammatory factors [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α,interleukin (IL)-1, and IL-6]. Moreover, GLC markedly reduced Ikappa-B (IκB) kinase (IKK) expression in microglia and nuclear factor (NF)-κB-P65 levels in perihematomal tissue. GLC ameliorated ICH-induced neuroinflammation and improved neurological outcomes in aged rats. In part, GLC may exert these effects by regulating the NF-κB signaling pathway through the Sur1-Trpm4 channel.

Background: Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare aggressive malignancy typically originating from the abdominal or pelvic cavity. DSRCT presenting as a primary head and neck tumor has rarely been described in the literature. Case presentation: We present three cases of DSRCT arising in the head and neck to further characterize its clinicopathological features. All three patients were male and aged 36, 30 and 17 years. The involved sites included the orbit (1 case) and submandibular gland (2 cases). The tumors ranged in size from 2.4 to 3.5 cm (mean, 2.1 cm). Histologically, all tumors showed irregular-shaped, variable-sized nests of small round cells deposited in an abundant desmoplastic stroma. Tumor cells contained small hyperchromatic nuclei and scant amounts of eosinophilic cytoplasm with inconspicuous nucleoli. Immunohistochemically, the tumors were positive for AE1/AE3 (3/3), desmin (3/3), vimentin (2/2), NSE (1/1) and EMA (1/1). Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis demonstrated the presence of EWSR1 and WT1 rearrangements in all three cases. All patients received surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. There was no evidence of recurrence and metastasis in two patients, and the third suffered lung metastasis.Conclusions: DSRCT arising in the head and neck represents an extremely rare condition. It is easily mistaken as poorly differentiated carcinoma due to similar morphology and expression of epithelial markers. Immunohistochemistry assay in conjunction with molecular detection of EWSR1-WT1 fusion will be helpful for arriving at an accurate diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment.

Background: This study aimed to assess the differences in the average and sectoral peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), macular ganglion cell plus inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), and macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with pre-perimetric glaucoma (PPG) compared to those with early perimetric glaucoma (EG) and ocular hypertension (OHT).Methods: A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed database, the Cochrane Library, and Embase was performed from inception to March 2021. The weighted mean difference (WMD) with the 95% confidence interval (CI) was pooled for continuous outcomes.Results: Twenty-three cross-sectional studies comprising 2,574 eyes (1,101 PPG eyes, 1,233 EG eyes, and 240 OHT eyes) were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that the average pRNFL (WMD = 8.22, 95% CI = 6.32–10.12, P < 0.00001), mGCIPL (WMD = 4.83, 95% CI = 3.43–6.23, P < 0.00001), and mGCC (WMD = 7.19, 95% CI = 4.52–9.85, P < 0.00001) were significantly thinner in patients with EG than in those with PPG. The sectoral thickness of pRNFL, mGCIPL, and mGCC were also significantly lower in the EG eyes. In addition, the average pRNFL and mGCC were significantly thinner in the PPG eyes than those in the OHT eyes (pRNFL: WMD = −8.57, 95% CI = −9.88 to −7.27, P < 0.00001; mGCC: WMD = −3.23, 95% CI = −6.03 to −0.44, P = 0.02). Similarly, the sectoral pRNFL and mGCC were also significantly thinner in the PPG eyes than those in the OHT eyes.Conclusion: OCT-based measurements of peripapillary and macular structural alterations can be used to distinguish PPG from EG and OHT, which can help understand the pathophysiology of glaucoma at earlier stages. The development of wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) allows painless imaging of the internal digestive environment. Limited by the image acquisition and transmitting time, the frame rate of WCE device is not high enough to generate visually consistent video data. Therefore, in the present contribution, we propose a robust WCE video frame interpolation method, aiming at generating consistent and detail-rich gastrointestinal (GI) track video frames. Considering the special environment of digestive system, we firstly correct the WCE device image capturing position based on stereo geometry to align adjacent frames, and then estimate optical flow using PWC-Net flow estimation architecture. Using the well refined optical flow, intermediate frame between two adjacent frames is interpolated and projected back to the original WCE image form. Comparing with a state-of-the-art method DAIN, our work outperforms on both visual performance and frame prediction accuracy. This work significantly improves the smoothness of WCE video, and provides more completed image data for subsequent data processing.

Purpose: This meta-analysis aims to investigate the worldwide prevalence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and its risk factors in the last 20 years.Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 population-based studies and 144,354 subjects. PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for cross-sectional or cohort studies published in the last 20 years (2000–2020) that reported the prevalence of PACG. The prevalence of PACG was analyzed according to various risk factors. A random-effects model was used for the meta-analysis.Results: The global pooled prevalence of PACG was 0.6% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.5–0.8%] for the last 20 years. The prevalence of PACG increases with age. Men are found less likely to have PACG than women (risk ratio = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.53–0.93, p < 0.01). Asia is found to have the highest prevalence of PACG (0.7%, 95% CI = 0.6–1.0%). The current estimated population with PACG is 17.14 million (95% CI = 14.28–22.85) for people older than 40 years old worldwide, with 12.30 million (95% CI = 10.54–17.57) in Asia. It is estimated that by 2050, the global population with PACG will be 26.26 million, with 18.47 million in Asia.Conclusion: PACG affects more than 17 million people worldwide, especially leading a huge burden to Asia. The prevalence of PACG varies widely across different ages, sex, and population geographic variation. Asian, female sex, and age are risk factors of PACG.

In order to improve the accuracy of feature extraction of students’ Ideological and political learning behavior, a method of feature extraction of students’ Ideological and political learning behavior based on convolutional neural network is proposed. The image of students’ Ideological and political learning behavior is obtained and stored, and the stored image is corrected. On the basis of image correction, the similarity measurement of students’ image spatial structure information details and the representation of image spatial structure information details are used to extract the characteristics of students’ Ideological and political learning behavior based on convolutional neural network. The experimental results show that the method based on convolution neural network not only improves the accuracy of feature extraction, but also reduces the time of feature extraction.

Background. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) exhibits outstanding therapeutic effects on the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Wang-Bi tablets (WBTs) have been used in clinics to treat knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by alleviating joint swelling and paining, and thus, the quality of life in patients with KOA was improved. However, its underlying molecular mechanism of anti-inflammatory response remains unclear. Therefore, further investigation is required. Purpose. This study aimed to explore the function of WBT in KOA mice and uncover the possible molecular mechanisms. Study Design. A KOA model was constructed by destabilizing the medial meniscus (DMM). IL-1β-treated chondrocytes were used to investigate the precise mechanism in vitro. Methods. (1) C57BL/6 male mice (8-week-old) were divided into Model, Sham, WBT-L, WBT-M, and WBT-H groups. After intragastric administration of 0.5% CMC-Na or WBT for 4 weeks, inflammation and pathological change were analyzed by ELISA, RT-qPCR, hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) and safranine O staining. (2) Isolated chondrocytes were stimulated with IL-1β followed by WBT-containing serum treatment, and then, the expression of inflammatory cytokines was analyzed by ELISA and RT-qPCR. (3) The effects of WBT on inflammatory signaling cascades in mice knee joint and chondrocytes were detected by WB. Results. The results indicated that WBT could alleviate inflammation and prevent cartilage injury in KOA mice. Compared with 0.5% CMC-Na-treated mice, the serum glycosaminoglycans (GAG) level in WBT-treated mice was notably increased, while the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin- (IL-) 6 level was decreased. In addition, WBT treatment suppressed the activation of NF-κB and p38 signaling pathways both in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion. WBT can effectively inhibit articular cartilage injury and inflammatory response in KOA mice. The protective role of WBT in mice KOA was a result of the downregulation of NF-κB and p38-MAPK signal pathways.

With the continuous development of the concept of diagnosis and treatment, the current industry’s treatment model has developed into a multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment. That is, in view of the pathological characteristics and clinical stages of breast cancer, corresponding methods such as surgery, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, radiotherapy, and biological targeted therapy are adopted to provide comprehensive treatment of patients with multiple disciplines. This paper combines experimental research to research and analyze the degree of pathological remission of breast cancer by adjuvant chemotherapy and combines investigation and analysis and group trials to study and explore the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy. Moreover, this paper fully considers the patient’s response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and compares the changes in tumor cell abundance before and after chemotherapy to observe the response of the patient’s primary tumor to chemotherapy at a microscopic level. Therefore, this study has made a relatively objective and accurate evaluation of the chemotherapy efficacy of tumor tissues, which can provide a reference for subsequent related research.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world and is influenced by various sociodemographic factors. This meta-analysis aims to determine the worldwide prevalence of POAG in the adult general population for the last 20 years, and explore variation in prevalence by age, gender and geographical location. An electronic literature search was performed using the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Population-based cross-sectional or cohort studies published in the last 20 years (2000–2020) that reported prevalence of POAG were recruited. Relevant studies meeting defined eligibility criteria were selected and reviewed systematically by meta-analysis. The prevalence of POAG was analyzed according to various risk factors. A random effect model was used for the meta-analysis. Fifty publications with a total of 198,259 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The worldwide overall prevalence of POAG was 2.4% (95% CI 2.0 ~ 2.8%). The prevalence increases with age. Men are found to be more susceptible to POAG than women (RR 1.28, p

Background: While cement distributes sufficiently in the fractured area and relatively symmetrically around the fractured area, three types of cement mass location in the vertebral body are commonly seen when performing bipedicular percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA) for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs), including anterolateral (AL), anteromedial (AM) and posterolateral (PL). However, little is known about differences of biomechanical behaviors among these three types of cement distribution so far. The present study aimed to investigate biomechanical effects of AL, AM and PL in the fractured area on OVCFs.Methods: Three dimentional finite element methods were utilized to construct OVCF model and simulate AL, AM and PL in the fractured area for OVCFs treated with PVA. Distributions and magnitudes of von Mises stress in cortical and cancellous bone and maximum displacement of the four models were compared.Results: Compared with the OVCF model, Distribution of von Mises stress in cortical bone was unchanged while that in cancellous bone was transferred to be concentrated symmetrically at cancellous bone surrounding cement after PVA. Maximum displacement and maximum von Mises stress in cortical bone in AL decreased the most significantly, while AM created the lowest maximum von Mises stress in cancellous bone.Conclusions: Cement distribution between AL and AM may balance stress in cortical and cancellous bone, better restoring vertebral strength, meanwhile, providing sufficient vertebral stability.

Summary Background With the unprecedented morbidity and mortality associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, a vaccine against COVID-19 is urgently needed. We investigated CoronaVac (Sinovac Life Sciences, Beijing, China), an inactivated vaccine candidate against COVID-19, containing inactivated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), for its safety, tolerability and immunogenicity. Methods In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 1/2 clinical trial, healthy adults aged 18–59 years were recruited from the community in Suining County of Jiangsu province, China. Adults with SARS-CoV-2 exposure or infection history, with axillary temperature above 37·0°C, or an allergic reaction to any vaccine component were excluded. The experimental vaccine for the phase 1 trial was manufactured using a cell factory process (CellSTACK Cell Culture Chamber 10, Corning, Wujiang, China), whereas those for the phase 2 trial were produced through a bioreactor process (ReadyToProcess WAVE 25, GE, Umea, Sweden). The phase 1 trial was done in a dose-escalating manner. At screening, participants were initially separated (1:1), with no specific randomisation, into two vaccination schedule cohorts, the days 0 and 14 vaccination cohort and the days 0 and 28 vaccination cohort, and within each cohort the first 36 participants were assigned to block 1 (low dose CoronaVac [3 μg per 0·5 mL of aluminium hydroxide diluent per dose) then another 36 were assigned to block 2 (high-dose Coronavc [6 μg per 0·5 mL of aluminium hydroxide diluent per dse]). Within each block, participants were randomly assigned (2:1), using block randomisation with a block size of six, to either two doses of CoronaVac or two doses of placebo. In the phase 2 trial, at screening, participants were initially separated (1:1), with no specific randomisation, into the days 0 and 14 vaccination cohort and the days 0 and 28 vaccination cohort, and participants were randomly assigned (2:2:1), using block randomisation with a block size of five, to receive two doses of either low-dose CoronaVac, high-dose CoronaVac, or placebo. Participants, investigators, and laboratory staff were masked to treatment allocation. The primary safety endpoint was adverse reactions within 28 days after injection in all participants who were given at least one dose of study drug (safety population). The primary immunogenic outcome was seroconversion rates of neutralising antibodies to live SARS-CoV-2 at day 14 after the last dose in the days 0 and 14 cohort, and at day 28 after the last dose in the days 0 and 28 cohort in participants who completed their allocated two-dose vaccination schedule (per-protocol population). This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04352608, and is closed to accrual. Findings Between April 16 and April 25, 2020, 144 participants were enrolled in the phase 1 trial, and between May 3 and May 5, 2020, 600 participants were enrolled in the phase 2 trial. 743 participants received at least one dose of investigational product (n=143 for phase 1 and n=600 for phase 2; safety population). In the phase 1 trial, the incidence of adverse reactions for the days 0 and 14 cohort was seven (29%) of 24 participants in the 3 ug group, nine (38%) of 24 in the 6 μg group, and two (8%) of 24 in the placebo group, and for the days 0 and 28 cohort was three (13%) of 24 in the 3 μg group, four (17%) of 24 in the 6 μg group, and three (13%) of 23 in the placebo group. The seroconversion of neutralising antibodies on day 14 after the days 0 and 14 vaccination schedule was seen in 11 (46%) of 24 participants in the 3 μg group, 12 (50%) of 24 in the 6 μg group, and none (0%) of 24 in the placebo group; whereas at day 28 after the days 0 and 28 vaccination schedule, seroconversion was seen in 20 (83%) of 24 in the 3 μg group, 19 (79%) of 24 in the 6 μg group, and one (4%) of 24 in the placebo group. In the phase 2 trial, the incidence of adverse reactions for the days 0 and 14 cohort was 40 (33%) of 120 participants in the 3 μg group, 42 (35%) of 120 in the 6 μg group, and 13 (22%) of 60 in the placebo group, and for the days 0 and 28 cohort was 23 (19%) of 120 in the 3 μg group, 23 (19%) of 120 in the 6 μg group, and 11 (18%) of 60 for the placebo group. Seroconversion of neutralising antibodies was seen for 109 (92%) of 118 participants in the 3 μg group, 117 (98%) of 119 in the 6 μg group, and two (3%) of 60 in the placebo group at day 14 after the days 0 and 14 schedule; whereas at day 28 after the days 0 and 28 schedule, seroconversion was seen in 114 (97%) of 117 in the 3 μg group, 118 (100%) of 118 in the 6 μg group, and none (0%) of 59 in the placebo group. Interpretation Taking safety, immunogenicity, and production capacity into account, the 3 μg dose of CoronaVac is the suggested dose for efficacy assessment in future phase 3 trials. BACKGROUNDThe top priority for the control of COVID-19 pandemic currently is the development of a vaccine. A phase 2 trial conducted to further evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of a SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac).METHODSWe conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the optimal dose, immunogenicity and safety of the CoronaVac. A total of 600 healthy adults aged 18-59 years were randomly assigned to receive 2 injections of the trial vaccine at a dose of 3 μg/0.5 mL or 6 μg /0.5mL, or placebo on Day 0,14 schedule or Day 0,28 schedule. For safety evaluation, solicited and unsolicited adverse events were collected after each vaccination within 7 days and 28 days, respectively. Blood samples were taken for antibody assay.RESULTSCoronaVac was well tolerated, and no dose-related safety concerns were observed. Most of the adverse reactions fell in the solicited category and were mild in severity. Pain at injection site was the most frequently reported symptoms. No Grade 3 adverse reaction or vaccine related SAEs were reported. CoronaVac showed good immunogenicity with the lower 3 μg dose eliciting 92.4% seroconversion under Day 0,14 schedule and 97.4% under Day 0,28 schedule. 28 days after two-dose vaccination, the Nab levels of individual schedules range from 23.8 to 65.4 among different dosage and vaccination schedules.CONCLUSIONSFavorable safety and immunogenicity of CoronaVac was demonstrated on both schedules and both dosages, which support the conduction of phase 3 trial with optimum schedule/dosage per different scenarios.

In response to the snake-like deviation phenomenon in the fabric production process, an embedded development system based on ARM Cortex-A9 for fabric edge detection is designed. The system uses an edge detection algorithm based on machine learning, supplemented by image preprocessing and Huff's line detection algorithm. The embedded operating system and the OpenCV computer vision library are ported on the ARM side, a cross-compilation environment is built, and QT- GUI programming for real-time display. Experiments prove that compared with traditional systems, this system has better adaptability and can more effectively track the edges of cloth.

AIM: To explore the ocular features of corona virus disease (COVID)-19 and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2 detection in tears and conjunctival scrapes in non-severe COVID-19 patients. METHODS: This is a multicenter observational clinical study with no intervention conducted from Jan 25th to March 1st, 2020. Clinical data and samples of tears and conjunctival scraping were collected in consecutive laboratory-confirmed, non-severe COVID-19 patients from three hospitals. COVID-19 virus was analyzed by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) kits. RESULTS: Totally 255 laboratory-confirmed, non-severe COVID-19 patients were recruited for ocular manifestation investigation. Of them, 54.9% were females, with a mean age of 49.4y. None of the patients has evidence of uveitis;11 patients (4.3%) complained of mild asthenopia;2 (0.8%) had mild conjunctival congestion and serous secretion. Twenty-five of them had performed tears and conjunctival scrape for COVID-19 virus detection, with 4 yield possible positive results in the nucleoprotein gene. One of them were asymptomatic with normal chest CT and positive pharyngeal swab result. CONCLUSION: Ocular manifestations are neither common nor specific in non-severe COVID-19 patients. Meanwhile, COVID-19 virus nucleotides can be detected in the tears and conjunctival scrape samples, warranting further research on the transmissibility by the ocular route. © 2021 International Journal of Ophthalmology (c/o Editorial Office). Network-induced imperfections such as transmission delays, time-varying sampling intervals and clock asynchronization among nodes make it complicated to analysis and design a networked control system (NCS). Further, constructing such an NCS becomes tedious and difficult when there are a number of nodes needed to be integrated together through the imperfect network. In this paper, to solve these problems, we design and develop a network interface device termed as information pipeline CAN (IPCAN) that can facilitate rapid integration of network nodes and provide well-designed transmission properties. The IPCAN adopts information pipeline technology (IPT) to construct an endpoint-based data interface, which makes nodes modular and reusable. A time-triggered information-exchange mechanism is proposed for the IPCAN to achieve fixed and predictable transmission delays and temporal-spatial consistency of received data. These properties contribute to realizing synchronous time-driven mode among nodes and simplifying the analysis of the system. In addition, several novel technical methods are proposed to implement the IPCAN with controller area network (CAN) and serial peripheral interface (SPI) as the physical connections of network and user interface, respectively. The IPCAN is applied to a distributed temperature control system and its utility and performance are well demonstrated.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of transfer learning on computed tomography (CT) images for the benign and malignant classification on renal tumors and to attempt to improve the classification accuracy by building patient-level models. METHODS: One hundred ninety-two cases of renal tumors were collected and identified by pathologic diagnosis within 15 days after enhanced CT examination (66% male, 70% malignant renal tumors, average age of 62.27 ± 12.26 years). The InceptionV3 model pretrained by the ImageNet dataset was cross-trained to perform this classification. Five image-level models were established for each of the Slice, region of interest (ROI), and rectangular box region (RBR) datasets. Then, two patient-level models were built based on the optimal image-level models. The network's performance was evaluated through analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and five-fold cross-validation. RESULTS: In the image-level models, the test results of model trained on the Slice dataset [accuracy (ACC) = 0.69 and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) = 0.45] were the worst. The corresponding results on the ROI dataset (ACC = 0.97 and MCC = 0.93) were slightly better than those on the RBR dataset (ACC = 0.93 and MCC = 0.85) when freezing the weights before the mixed6 layer. Compared with the image-level models, both patient-level models could discriminate better (ACC increased by 2%-5%) on the RBR and Slice datasets. CONCLUSIONS: Deep learning can be used to classify benign and malignant renal tumors from CT images. Our patient-level models could benefit from 3D data to improve the accuracy.

AIM: To conduct a Meta-analysis for the change of interleukin-10 (IL-10) concentration in vitreous samples of patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: Systemic search for literature was conducted from the databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library by August 2019. Statistical analyses including standard mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were performed by using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: Totally 194 studies were screened and finally 11 studies were included in the Meta-analysis. Focused ion beam (FIB) technology has become a valuable tool for the microelectronics industry and for the fabrication and preparation of samples at the micro/nanoscale. Its effects on the thermal transport properties of Si, however, are not well understood nor do experimental data exist. This paper presents a carefully designed set of experiments for the determination of the thermal conductivity of Si samples irradiated by Ga+ FIB. Generally, the thermal conductivity decreases with increasing ion dose. For doses of >1016 (Ga+/cm2), a reversal of the trend was observed due to recrystallization of Si. This report provides insight on the thermal transport considerations relevant to engineering of Si nanostructures and interfaces fabricated or prepared by FIB.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious disorder of human pregnancy and always is accompanied with multi-organ disorder, which severely threatens the health of both the mothers and the offspring. The oxidative stress and genetic factors involves in the development of PE. The Klotho encodes Klotho protein that is capable of increasing resistance to oxidative stress. Thus, we designed this case-control study to investigate the association between Klotho polymorphisms and the susceptibility to PE in Chinese Han women. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1207568 and rs564481) in Klotho were selected to be genotyped in 1002 PE patients and 1384 normal controls with TaqMan allelic discrimination real-time PCR technology. There were no significant differences in genotypic or allelic frequencies at both polymorphic sites between PE patients and controls (rs1207568: χ2 = 2.386, p = 0.303 by genotype, χ2 = 2.357, p = 0.125, OR = 1.127, 95%CI 0.968–1.312 by allele; rs564481: χ2 = 1.195, p = 0.550 by genotype, χ2 = 0.018, p = 0.894, OR = 1.010, 95%CI 0.875–1.165 by allele). Furthermore, we divided the cases into mild vs severe and early-onset vs late-onset subgroups and then analyzed the relationships between these subgroups and the control group respectively. As a consequence, no significant differences were found for both SNPs in each case. These results suggested that the genetic variants of rs1207568 and rs564481 in Klotho may not play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of PE in Chinese Han women.

Although perovskite solar cells with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) more than 22% have been realized with expensive organic charge-transporting materials, their stability and high cost remain to be addressed. In this work, the perovskite configuration of MAPbX (MA = CH3NH3, X = I3, Br3, or I2Br) integrated with stable and low-cost Cu:NiOx hole-transporting material, ZnO electron-transporting material, and Al counter electrode was modeled as a planar PSC and studied theoretically. A solar cell simulation program (wxAMPS), which served as an update of the popular solar cell simulation tool (AMPS: Analysis of Microelectronic and Photonic Structures), was used. The study yielded a detailed understanding of the role of each component in the solar cell and its effect on the photovoltaic parameters as a whole. The bandgap of active materials and operating temperature of the modeled solar cell were shown to influence the solar cell performance in a significant way. Further, the simulation results reveal a strong dependence of photovoltaic parameters on the thickness and defect density of the light-absorbing layers. Under moderate simulation conditions, the MAPbBr3 and MAPbI2Br cells recorded the highest PCEs of 20.58 and 19.08%, respectively, while MAPbI3 cell gave a value of 16.14%. To explore the contamination of heavy metals in the Shi River Basin soil in China, a high density sampling of surface soil was conducted. In this study, an absolute principal component scores multiple linear regression model (APCS-MLR) was used to identify the sources of heavy metals in the soil and quantify their amounts. The methods to assess the heavy metals included a fuzzy synthetic evaluation, index and health risk assessment. The results show that heavy metals are relatively rich southwest of the study area. Their levels may be affected by natural sources, such as parent materials. The pollution caused by human factors cannot be ignored, and it is primarily influenced by traffic emissions and processing sources, which contribute 62.6%, followed by agricultural sources, such as pesticides and fertilizers, that contribute 21.1%. The risk assessment indicated that the study area was slightly to moderately polluted. All heavy metals pose higher carcinogenic and other health risks to children than adults, and ingestion is the main way that these pollutants enter the body. The carcinogenic risk of children owing to Cr from natural sources merits further study, while the carcinogenic risk to adults and the non-carcinogenic risk to both adults and children are at acceptable levels. Transportation and industrial processing sources are the main cause of the non-carcinogenic risk. The results could provide reference for reducing heavy metal pollution in the soil.

Both microscopic and endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery are effective approaches for nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas. The issue on the comparison of their efficacy and safety remains inconsistent. A thorough search of the literatures (PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE) were performed up to March 2017. Studies reporting outcomes of microscopic or endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery on nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas were included. A meta‐analysis was performed focusing on the early stage and long term outcomes. The final search yielded 19 eligible studies enrolling 3847 patients, 389 of them underwent microscopic approach and 3458 of them with endoscopic approach. As to the early stage outcomes, the rate of gross tumor resection was significantly higher in the endoscopic group than that in microscopic group (73% versus 60%, P < 0.001). Meanwhile, endoscopic approach showed priority over microscopy on postoperative hypopituitarism (63% versus 65%, P < 0.001) and CSF leakage (3% versus 7%, P < 0.001). For the long term outcomes, the rate of visual improvement was significant higher in the endoscopic group than that in microscopic group (77% versus 50%, P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference between the groups regarding the rate of permanent diabetic insipidus and meningitis. The endoscopic approach may be associated with higher rate of gross tumor movement and lower risk of postoperatively complications for treating nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma, when compared with microscopic approach. However, the confidence was shorted due to limited high quality evidence (largely randomized and controlled studies).

Aiming at the ranging and positioning problem of floating objects polluted by water surface, the binocular system of UAV is designed to obtain the parallax and distance information of target objects in the scene. Firstly, Zhang Zhengyou calibration method is used to calibrate binocular camera; Secondly, stereo correction is carried out on the image to obtain a standard binocular stereo vision model; Finally, the depth information of the target object is obtained by stereo matching algorithm. The simulation results show that the depth error is less than 5%, and the actual physical coordinate position of the floating object is obtained by combining the GPS information of the UAV itself.

Hyperprolactinemia has been associated with endothelial dysfunction and a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors, thus it can potentially lead to cardiac dysfunction. The present study was designed to interrogate our hypothesis that hyperprolactinemia can contribute to preclinical impaired left ventricular function.Thirty-one prolactinoma patients and 60 healthy volunteers were prospectively recruited. Left ventricular function was evaluated using conventional two dimensions and M-mode echocardiography, as well as Doppler tissue imaging (DTI).The Tei index (0.45 ± 0.06 vs. 0.41 ± 0.03, P = .005) and ratio of transmitral and myocardial early diastolic velocities (E/Em; 6.30 ± 1.45 vs. 5.64 ± 0.69, P = .045) were significantly higher, and septal systolic velocity (Sm; 9.88 ± 1.45 vs. 11.58 ± 1.28 cm/s, P.001) was significantly lower in prolactinoma patients. Furthermore, significant motional abnormalities were detected in regional segments of prolactinoma patients. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that prolactin level was inversely associated with Sm (r = -0.373, P = .009) and late diastolic phase (Am; r = -0.293, P = .043). Moreover, inverse correlations between prolactin and partial left ventricular segment wall motion were found, including the basal (r = -0.363, P = .014), middle (r = -0.418, P = .004), and apical segment (r = -0.574, P.001) of the posterior ventricular septum. Prolyl 4-Hydroxylase Subunit Alpha 1 (P4HA1) is the active catalytic component of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and plays a crucial role in modulating extracellular matrix hemostasis. P4HA1 has been reported to promote tumor progression by enhancing invasion and angiogenesis. Overexpression of P4HA1 is associated with decreased survival for patients with breast and prostate cancer. However, the prognostic significance of P4HA1 for glioma patients remains undefined.The expression of P4HA1 in 290 gliomas (WHO grade II-IV) and 10 normal brain tissues was examined with TMA-based immunohistochemistry assay. The correlation between P4HA1 expression and clinicopathological parameters as well as the prognosis of glioma patients was investigated.Cytoplasmic expression of P4HA1 is high in 37.93% of all glioma cases, with 44.98% in high-grade gliomas and 19.75% in low-grade gliomas respectively. Increased P4HA1 level was correlated with advanced histological grade (p0.01) and old age (p=0.01). Upregulation of P4HA1, as well as histological grade, was an independent risk factor for unfavorable prognosis. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that high P4HA1 expression was significantly associated with poor prognosis for high-grade gliomas (p0.01) but not for low-grade gliomas.P4HA1 was upregulated in gliomas. High expression of P4HA1 was correlated with the malignancy of gliomas and could serve as a prognostic indicator for patients with high-grade gliomas.

In this paper, a coupled approach of the finite element method (FEM) and the analytical layer-element method (ALEM) is proposed to conduct a research on vertically and laterally loaded piles. The FEM is used to model the pile, and the ALEM is utilized to solve the multi-layered transversely isotropic soils. Then with the assumption of force equilibrium and deformation compatibility, the interaction equation of pile and soils is obtained. Finally, the behavior of piles simultaneously subjected to lateral and vertical loads in layered transversely isotropic soils is investigated by considering the influence of lateral–vertical loads interaction and soft soil stratum.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the application of 3-dimensional computed tomography angiography (3D-CTA) for defining cavernous sinus aneurysms and intradural aneurysms involving the internal carotid artery around the anterior clinoid process. Methods Results from 42 patients with an aneurysm of the internal carotid artery around the anterior clinoid process who underwent 3D-CTA were reviewed and compared with those of observed clinical operations. Results Among the 42 patients, there was a total of 45 aneurysms of the internal carotid artery around the anterior clinoid process. After surgery, 33 of the 45 aneurysms were confirmed as intradural aneurysms, and the other 12 were confirmed as aneurysms in the cavernous sinus. 3D-CTA imaging of the medial sagittal plane showed that 31 out of 31 (100%) intradural aneurysms of the internal carotid artery were above the virtual line between the inferior border of the anterior clinoid process and the tuberculum sellae, and 12 out of 14 (86%) cavernous sinus aneurysms were below the virtual line (P Conclusions The virtual line between the inferior border of the anterior clinoid process and the tuberculum sellae on 3D-CTA indicates the proximal dural ring of the internal carotid artery. This line helps differentiate cavernous sinus aneurysms from intradural aneurysms involving the internal carotid artery around the anterior clinoid process.

Prolactinomas are the most prevalent functional pituitary adenomas. The preferred treatments for prolactinomas are dopamine agonists (DAs) such as bromocriptine (BRC), but DAs still have the challenges of tumor recurrence and drug resistance. This study demonstrates that the synergy of function and mechanism between artesunate (ART) and BRC inhibits prolactinoma cell growth in vitro. We found that low-dose ART combined with BRC synergistically inhibited the growth of GH3 and MMQ cell lines, caused cell death, attenuated cell migration and invasion, and suppressed the expression of extracellular prolactin. The induction of apoptosis after co-treatment was confirmed by immunofluorescent staining, assessment of caspase-3 protein expression, and flow cytometry. Expression of miR-200c, a carcinogenic factor in pituitary adenoma, was reduced following co-treatment with ART and BRC. This was accompanied by increased expression of the antitumor factor Pten. Transfection experiments with miR-200c analogs and inhibitors confirmed that miR-200c expression was inversely associated with Pten expression. We suggest that ART and BRC used in combination exert synergistic apoptotic and antitumor effects by suppressing miR-200c and stimulating Pten expression.

Background: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a skin disorder with an important immunologic profile. S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12 are the members of S100 family that have been reported to play important role in autoimmune diseases, but the characteristics of these three S100 members have not been defined in CSU. Aims: This study was performed to investigate the levels of these three S100s in patients with CSU and to study whether they were associated with the severity and clinical characteristics of CSU. Materials and Methods: The levels of plasma S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12 were measured in 51 CSU patients and 20 healthy controls using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay kits. The values in the patient group and that of the healthy controls were statistically compared. The relationships between the different markers were evaluated by correlation analysis. Results: The plasma levels of S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12 were significantly higher in CSU patients than those in controls. Interestingly, the level of S100A12 was significantly correlated with S100A8 and S100A9 in CSU patients (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). In addition, S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12 were all significantly inversely correlated with blood basophil percentage. Conclusions: Plasma S100A8, S100A9, and S100A12 levels were elevated in CSU patients. They might be useful biomarkers of CSU, with the potential role in the pathogenesis of CSU.

Preeclampsia (PE) is an excessive systemic inflammation response with dysfunction of endothelial. As a stress protein, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) plays a pivotal role in protecting cells against apoptosis, oxidative damage and genetic damage. In humans, three genes encode members of the HSP70 class: HSPA1A, HSPA1B and HSPA1L. Our study was to investigate the association between genetic variations of HSPA1L and the susceptibility for PE in Chinese Han population. The polymorphisms of rs2227956, rs1043618 and rs1061581 in HSPA1L were genotyped by TaqMan allelic discrimination real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 929 PE patients and 1024 healthy pregnant women. Statistic difference of the genotypic and allelic frequencies were found in HSPA1L rs1061581 between PE patients and controls (χ2 = 29.863, P < 0.001 by genotype; χ2 = 27.298, P < 0.001, OR = 1.874, 95%CI 1.476–2.379 by allele) and HSPA1L rs1061581 A alleles occurred more frequently in PE patients compared with healthy controls (PE vs. controls 10.28% vs. 5.76%). Furthermore, we divided the PE cases into early-onset/late-onset PE and mild/severe PE subgroups and found statistical differences in genotypic and allelic frequencies of the HSPA1L rs1061581 between early-onset PE, late-onset PE, mild PE, severe PE and controls, respectively. Moreover, HSPA1L rs1061581 A alleles were more frequent in early-onset PE, late-onset PE, mild PE and severe PE than controls respectively. Therefore, we concluded that HSPA1L rs1061581 polymorphism is associated with the risk of PE in Han Chinese women and A alleles may play a role in the susceptibility for PE.

In this paper, we propose an analysis method for defect data of capacitive devices and a method for predicting the occurrence time of defects based on the analysis method. This method is not sensitive to noise in data and has strong robustness. We analyze various features that may affect the occurrence time of capacitive device defects, and use sparse auto encoder (SAE) for dimensionality reduction and denoising. This unsupervised method learns the lowdimensional sparse features of nonlinear manifolds from the data features, which improves the generalization performance of the classifiers to a certain extent. Based on K-nearest regression (KNR), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) and deep learning (DL) models, we predict the occurrence time of capacitive equipment defects respectively. The root means square error (RMSE) between prediction time and labels is only 243.80 days. Compared with the simple baseline model, the error is reduced by 1773.50 days, and the predicted result is state-of-the-art.

Background The development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is related to germinal center (GC) response and autoreactive T cells, which mediate adaptive immunity and play an important role in stimulating the production of autoantibodies and pro-inflammatory cytokines by B cells and macrophages. Total Glucosides of Paeony (TGP) has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and analgesic effects and is widely used to treat RA. However, few studies investigated whether the therapeutic effect of TGP is associated with the inhibition of autoimmune response. Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and mechanisms of TGP on RA. Study Design Type II collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse model was used, and TGP and paeoniflorin were intragastrically treated. Methods DBA/1 mice were divided into 5 groups: control, model, positive drug (paeoniflorin) and high- and low-dose TGP group. After 21 days of intragastric administration, the pathological change, inflammation expression and molecular mechanism of each group of mice were detected by Micro-CT, histochemical analysis, ELLSA, Western blot, RT-qPCR and flow cytometry. Results Our study found that TGP treatment effectively improved inflammation and joint destruction in CIA mice. It reduced the production of serum IgG2a and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including serum interleukin (IL)-21, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-6, and the phosphorylation of NF-κB p65 and STAT3 in a dose-dependent manner. More importantly, TGP could suppress the frequency of germinal center B cells and Tfh cells in the spleen. Conclusion TGP can not only improve symptoms, but also inhibit bone destruction. The therapeutic effect of TGP on CIA is mainly achieved by inhibiting spleen Tfh cell differentiation and GC formation through STAT3 signaling pathway.

In this work, the authors have developed an integrated evaluation hierarchy for automotive human–machine interaction (HMI) software/hardware interfaces and a corresponding set of integrated evaluation carriers and decision modes, to improve the interactive experience and usability of HMI interfaces, evaluation node management in R&D processes, and the integral quality of hardware and software components. In addition, a case study where the integrated evaluation was performed on rapidly prototyped electric automotive user interfaces was utilised to demonstrate the evaluation of integral conceptual themes and system frameworks based on rapid prototypes. It was shown that the evaluation of integrated software/hardware electric automotive interfaces via rapid prototyping aids the communication and organisation of design concepts, thus enhancing the design quality.

Purpose Amblyopia is a permanent visual impairment developed in early childhood. Recently, instrument-based photoscreeners have been widely used for vision screening to detect amblyopia risk factors, which is key for the prevention and treatment of amblyopia. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the diagnostic test accuracy of Spot and Plusoptix photoscreeners in detecting risk factors for amblyopia in children. Methods An electronic literature search was performed in October 2018 using the MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Twenty-one publications with a total of 5022 subjects were included. Subjects given a comprehensive examination were considered to have amblyopia or amblyogenic risk factors based on the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) referral criteria guidelines. Results The overall sensitivity for Spot and Plusoptix was 87.7% and 89.4%, respectively (p = 0.38); the specificity was 78.0% and 89.9%, respectively (p = 0.90). For subjects under 7 years old (preschool children), the overall sensitivity for Spot and Plusoptix was 91.7% and 90.2%, respectively (p = 0.81); the specificity was 82.6% and 93.0%, respectively (p = 0.46). Conclusion Both Spot and Plusoptix photoscreeners demonstrated good sensitivity and specificity in detecting amblyopia risk factors in children, especially at preschool ages. There was no significant difference in diagnostic test accuracy between them.

AlGaN/GaN heterojunction-based high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) have significant advantages of high carrier concentration, high electron mobility, and large breakdown voltage, and show promising potential as power devices. Being widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, dry etching process is capable of fabricating microstructures and thinning substrate from backside, which is good for developing flexible devices. Here, we investigate the effect of backside dry etching of Si substrate on the physical and electrical properties of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. The physical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscope, Raman spectra, and x-ray diffraction (XRD). After the dry etching process, the peak red-shift of GaNE2mode indicates an increase of tensile stress, and the XRD rocking curve of GaN film shows to a certain extent decreased dislocation density. Furthermore, the maximum saturation current density and maximum transconductance of the HEMTs are improved by 21.1% and 25.5%, respectively. The approach of backside dry etching for thinning Si substrate would contribute to the optimization of GaN heterojunction-based devices, and also provide inspirations for the development of flexible and robust power devices.

Background Outcomes of coiling embolization versus clipping for patients with high-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) have not been previously compared. We reviewed current evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of clipping versus coiling for high-grade aSAH. Methods We conducted a meta-analysis of studies that compared clipping with coiling in patients with high-grade aSAH published from January 1999 to February 2016 in Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases based on PRISMA inclusion and exclusion criteria. Binary outcome comparisons between clipping and coiling were described using odds ratios (ORs). Results Three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 16 observational studies were included. There was no statistical difference in good outcome rates between the clipping and coiling groups (OR, 1.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97–2.13). Subgroup analysis showed no significant difference between the 2 treatments in non-RCTs (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 0.95–2.36) and RCTs (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.59–2.25). Coiling was associated with higher mortality (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.41–0.75). Lower mortality was associated with clipping in non-RCTs (OR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.40–0.74), but there was no difference in the RCTs (OR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.19–3.39). Coiling was not associated with lower rates of complications including rebleeding (OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.30–1.29), ischemic infarct (OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.53–1.49), symptomatic vasospasm (OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.45–1.29), or shunt-dependent hydrocephalus (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 0.52–3.40). Conclusion The outcome with coiling is not superior to clipping in patients with high-grade aSAH; moreover, coiling has a greater risk of mortality.

Aim: The present study aimed to examine the effect of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) inhibition on bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in neurological function recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI) via the Wnt signaling pathway in a rat model. Methods: The rat model of SCI was established using Allen’s method. Seventy-two adult male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly assigned into 4 groups (18 rats in each group): the sham control group, saline control group, BMSCs group (injection with BMSCs at the injured site) and BMSCs + TNF-α group (injection with BMSCs under TNF-α treatment at the injured site). Immunochemistry was performed to characterize the culture media after TNF-α-induced differentiation. qRT-PCR and Western blotting analyses were performed to detect the mRNA and protein expression of β-catenin, Wnt3a, GSK-3β and Axin. The Basso Beattie Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor score, neurological deficit score (NDS), and balance beam test (BBT) score were used to assess neurological functional recovery of SCI rats. Results: In the BMSC group, numerous spherical cell clusters grew in suspension, and the cells were nestin-, NF200- and GFAP-positive. Compared with the sham control and BMSC groups, the β-catenin and Wnt3a mRNA and protein expression was increased, but the GSK-3β and Axin mRNA and protein expression was decreased in the BMSCs + TNF-α group. The SCI rats in the BMSCs + TNF-α group exhibited lower BBB scores, and higher NDSs and BBT scores compared to the BMSCs group. Conclusion: Our study provides evidence that TNF-α inhibition may weaken the ability of BMSCs in neurological functional recovery after SCI by activating the Wnt signaling pathway.
