Purpose This study aims to test the role of a firm’s marketing and technological capabilities in mediating the relationship between customer involvement in information provision (CIP) and customer involvement in coproduction (CIC) and new product performance, while also investigating the impact of the interactive effect of such capabilities. This investigation is at the firm rather than the project level. Design/methodology/approach A survey-based questionnaire was distributed to senior managers from 101 Taiwanese electronics firms. The research model and hypotheses were evaluated using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 3. Findings CIP and CIC improve new product performance indirectly through the development of marketing and technological capabilities. CIP has a stronger positive effect on marketing capabilities than CIC. In addition, the interactive effect of marketing and technological capabilities on new product performance is positive and significant. Research limitations/implications The data came from a single respondent in each firm, which may lead to common method bias. In addition, the data were cross-sectional in nature, having been collected at a single point in time. This limits the ability to draw causal inferences, as would be possible with longitudinal data. Finally, the data came from a single industry in only one country. Practical implications CIC is useful in terms of product idea generation and screening, as well as in helping to effectively learn and combine market knowledge from customers, whereas CIP takes on a more active role in strengthening marketing capabilities. Managers should understand these direct effects of CIP and CIC, as well as their indirect effects on new product performance. Originality/value Previous empirical research is largely limited to project-level implications such as innovativeness, advantages and the financial performance of a specific new product; a clear understanding of the strategic, firm-level implications of CIP and CIC in the context of new product development is lacking. The findings highlight the importance of treating CIP and CIC as continuous processes in a firm rather than viewing each in isolation to a specific project.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been proposed to play a role in the development of Sjögren's syndrome. However, to date, there are no reports on the risk of SS in HBV-infected patients following nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy. Due to Taiwan has higher prevalence of HBV infection and therapy was well recorded in the Taiwan's single-payer national health insurance database, we hypothesized that a long-term retrospective analysis of the risk of Sjögren's syndrome in HBV-infected patients following nucleotide therapy will increase our understanding of Sjögren's syndrome development following HBV infection. We identified 26,147 adults diagnosed with HBV infection between 1997 and 2012 in claims data. Finally, a total of 3268 HBV-infected patients who ever received nucleotide therapy (treated cohort) were frequency-matched on age and sex at 1:4 ratios to select a control group of 13,072 counterparts without therapy (untreated cohort). To identify Sjögren's syndrome risk, competing risk analysis adjusted for all covariates was performed. The risk was significantly lower in the treated cohort (15-year cumulative incidence, 2.4%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4%-3.7%) than in the untreated cohort (7.1%; 95% CI, 2.5%-15.2%) (p = .015), and the adjusted HR was 0.6 (95% CI, 0.41-0.88; p = .009). Multivariable stratified analysis further verified the consistent associations between nucleoside therapy and risk reduction of Sjögren's syndrome across all strata. Our finding suggests that HBV infection treated with nucleotides is associated with lower risk of Sjögren's syndrome, implying a potential role of HBV infection in the development of Sjögren's syndrome.

Background Thrombocytopenia can rapidly improve in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients receiving direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA). The role of baseline (BL) thrombopoietin (TPO) in this phenomenon is unclear. Methods From June 2016 to February 2019, a total of 104 CHC patients receiving DAA, with a sustained virologic response and BL thrombocytopenia, at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, were enrolled in this retrospective study. Significant platelet count improvement and platelet count improvement ratio were analyzed for correlation with BL TPO. Results This cohort included 40 men (38.5%). Seventy-two (69.2%) patients had advanced fibrosis. The platelet count [median (range)] increased from 110.5 (32–149) × 103/µL at BL to 116.5 (40–196) and 118.0 (35–275) × 103/µL at end of treatment (EOT) and 12 weeks after EOT (P12), respectively, (EOT vs. BL, P P P P = 0.004), and P12 (P Conclusions BL TPO level might be a useful marker for predicting significant platelet count improvement in thrombocytopenic patients after successful DAA therapy.

Purpose Early-life antibiotic use may be associated with asthma, yet whether this association also exists in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) remains unknown. We investigated the association between antibiotic exposure and asthma development in AR children. Methods AR patients less than 18 year-old were enrolled from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database, which reported information from 2005 to 2010. The case group was defined as having newly developed asthma, and the control group was defined as never having an asthma diagnosis. The age of first exposure to antibiotic prescriptions and antibiotic exposure records preceding 5 years before the first asthma diagnosis were obtained from drug prescription records. The odds ratio (OR) was examined after adjusting for age, gender, resident urbanization, underlying medical disorders and medications. Results A total of 3236 AR patients with newly developed asthma and 9708 AR patients without asthma were included in this study. Antibiotic exposure before the age of 3 years was not associated with asthma development. Preceding 5-year antibiotic exposure increased the risk of asthma development with a dose-response relationship, even for antibiotics with low cumulative defined daily doses (adjusted OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.12–1.75). Preceding 5-year exposure to penicillin and macrolide significantly increased the risk of asthma when diagnosed before age 12 in AR patients, but this was not statistically significant when asthma diagnosed after age 12. Conclusion Preceding 5-year antibiotic exposure, particularly to penicillin group of amoxicillin and macrolides, is associated with the risk of asthma development before age 12 in AR children.

Despite of the importance of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in international performance, we have yet to obtain sufficient insights into how and why a firm’s EO strengthens international performance. This article focuses on the underlying mechanism through which EO influences international performance, and develops a model of EO → knowledge creation → international venturing, and new product development decision-making flexibility → international performance linkages. Following a survey of 141 Taiwanese electronics firms, the results provide support for our proposed mediating process behind the EO–international performance link. These findings offer several theoretical and practical implications in the entrepreneurship and international business areas.

We report a systematic study of the optical absorption of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) across a large range of twist angles from 0° to 30° using a high-resolution reflectance confocal laser microscopy (RCLM) system. The high-quality single crystalline tBLG was synthesized via the efficient plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition techniques without the need of active heating. The sensitivity of acquired images from the RCLM were better than conventional optical microscopes. Although the highest spatial resolution of RCLM is still lower than scanning electron microscopes, it possesses the advantages of beam-damage and vacuum free. Moreover, the high intensity-resolution (sensitivity) images firstly allowed us to distinguish the slight absorption differences and analyze the correlation between the optical absorption and twisted angle of tBLG after data processing procedures. A maximum absorption (minimum transmission) was observed at the stacking angle of tBLG from 10° to 20°, indicating the interplay between the laser and the electron/hole van-Hove singularities when tBLG oriented around the critical angle (θ c ∼13°). The twisted angle correlated optical absorption paves an alternative way not only to visibly identify the interlayer orientation of tBLG but also to reflect the characterization of the interlayer coupling via its band structure.

BACKGROUND Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a documented risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, to date there are no reports on the long-term hard endpoints (ESRD and death) of anti-HCV therapy [interferon-based therapy (IBT) or new direct-acting antivirals] in CKD patients. Direct-acting antivirals are not available in Taiwan’s single-payer national health insurance database currently released for research. Therefore, we hypothesized that a retrospective analysis of the long-term outcomes of IBT in CKD patients will serve as a proxy for direct-acting antivirals to increase our understanding of progression to ESRD following HCV infection. AIM To evaluate the long-term outcomes (ESRD and death) of anti-HCV therapy, especially IBT, in HCV-infected patients with stage 1-5 CKD. METHODS We analyzed 93894 Taiwanese adults diagnosed with CKD and without HBV infection. Of these, 4.9% were infected with HCV. Of the 4582 HCV-infected CKD patients, 482 (10.5%) received IBT (treated cohort). They were matched 1:4 with 1928 untreated HCV-infected CKD patients (untreated cohort) by propensity scores and year, which further matched 1:2 by propensity scores with 3856 CKD patients without HCV infection (uninfected cohort). All participants were followed until the occurrence of ESRD, death, or the end of 2012. The association between HCV infection, IBT use, and risks of ESRD and death was analyzed using competing risk analysis. RESULTS Taking the uninfected cohort as a reference, the adjusted hazard ratios for ESRD, after adjusting for competing mortality, were 0.34 (0.14-0.84, P = 0.019) and 1.28 (1.03-1.60, P = 0.029) in the treated and untreated cohorts, respectively. The treated cohort had a 29% (0.54-0.92, P = 0.011) decrease in mortality compared to the untreated cohort, in which the mortality was 31% (1.18-1.45, P < 0.001) higher than in the uninfected cohort. The reduced risks of ESRD (0.14, 0.03–0.58, P = 0.007) and death (0.57, 0.41-0.79, P = 0.001) were greatest in HCV-infected CKD patients who received at least 4 mo of IBT, which accounted for 74% of the treated cohort. CONCLUSION Adequate anti-HCV therapy in CKD patients improves long-term renal and patient survival.

Chronic inflammation induced by proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines is postulated to be involved in insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Acarbose, the α-glucosidase inhibitor, is an oral antidiabetic drug for T2DM. Acarbose suppresses inflammatory cytokine production in patients with T2DM, though the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects and the exact mechanisms of acarbose in human monocytic THP-1 cells. THP-1 cells were pretreated with acarbose and then stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The levels of Th1-related chemokines, including interferon-γ-inducible protein-10 (IP-10), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), Th2-related chemokine macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), and proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Intracellular signaling pathways were explored by Western blot analysis and using a chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. Acarbose suppressed the levels of IP-10, MCP-1, MDC, and TNF-α and downregulated phosphorylation of p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal–regulated kinase (ERK), and nuclear factor-kappa B-p65 (NF-κB-p65) in LPS-stimulated THP-1 cells. Acarbose suppressed LPS-induced acetylation of histones H3 (H3) and H4 in the IP-10 and MCP-1 promoter regions. These findings revealed the suppressive effects of acarbose on IP-10, MCP-1, MDC, and TNF-α production in THP-1 cells via, at least partially, the p38, JNK, ERK, and NF-κB-p65 pathways, as well as through epigenetic regulation via histone H3 and H4 acetylation. Our study points to the therapeutic anti-inflammatory potential of acarbose.

Studies involving nanomechanical motion have evolved from its detection and understanding of its fundamental aspects to its promising practical utility as an integral component of hybrid systems. Nanomechanical resonators’ indispensable role as transducers between optical and microwave fields in hybrid systems, such as quantum communications interface, have elevated their importance in recent years. It is therefore crucial to determine which among the family of nanomechanical resonators is more suitable for this role. Most of the studies revolve around nanomechanical resonators of ultrathin structures because of their inherently large mechanical amplitude due to their very low mass. Here, we argue that the underutilized nanomechanical resonators made from multilayered two-dimensional (2D) materials are the better fit for this role because of their comparable electrostatic tunability and larger optomechanical responsivity. To show this, we first demonstrate the electrostatic tunability of mechanical modes of a multilayered nanomechanical resonator made from graphite. We also show that the optomechanical responsivity of multilayered devices will always be superior as compared to the few-layer devices. Finally, by using the multilayered model and comparing this device with the reported ones, we find that the electrostatic tunability of devices of intermediate thickness is not significantly lower than that of ultrathin ones. Together with the practicality in terms of fabrication ease and design predictability, we contend that multilayered 2D nanomechanical resonators are the optimal choice for the electromagnetic interface in integrated quantum systems.

Saliva plays an important role in supporting upper gastrointestinal tract function and oral well-being. Salivary dysfunction mainly manifests with a decrease in salivary flow. Among varieties of quantitative methods, salivary scintigraphy is a relatively noninvasive, well-tolerated, reproducible, and objective approach for functional evaluation of salivary disorders, yet the lack of precise quantitative reference values and no standardized protocol limit its generalized utilization. In this article, we review the scintigraphic performance between the visual analysis and quantitative methods in predicting Sjögren’s syndrome and verify the potential aspects of the application in interpreting different disease entities and phases of functional salivary disorders.

Multimodal pre-training has propelled great advancement in vision-and-language research. These large-scale pre-trained models, although successful, fatefully suffer from slow inference speed due to enormous computation cost mainly from cross-modal attention in Transformer architecture. When applied to real-life applications, such latency and computation demand severely deter the practical use of pre-trained models. In this paper, we study Image-text retrieval (ITR), the most mature scenario of V+L application, which has been widely studied even prior to the emergence of recent pre-trained models. We propose a simple yet highly effective approach, LightningDOT that accelerates the inference time of ITR by thousands of times, without sacrificing accuracy. LightningDOT removes the time-consuming cross-modal attention by pre-training on three novel learning objectives, extracting feature indexes offline, and employing instant dot-product matching with further re-ranking, which significantly speeds up retrieval process. In fact, LightningDOT achieves new state of the art across multiple ITR benchmarks such as Flickr30k, COCO and Multi30K, outperforming existing pre-trained models that consume 1000x magnitude of computational hours. Background and Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting extrusion time in both children and adults with ventilation tube (VT) insertion, providing useful information for clinicians for better decision-making, follow strategy, and potentially improve clinical outcomes for these patients. Methods: Data from patients receiving myringotomy with VT insertion from January 1, 2007, to June 30, 2012, were retrospectively collected and analyzed by the end of 2018. Various factors, including age, gender, history of VT insertion, tympanogram, size of VT used, local finding of tympanic membrane, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and postoperative ear infection, were included and analyzed to examine the effects of these factors on extrusion time. Results: A total of 447 patients were included in this study (Child group–Adult group = 237:210). The overall average extrusion time was 225.85 days. In the subgroup analysis, the average time was 221.3 days and 231.0 days for children and adults, respectively. The results showed that the VT extrusion time was significantly longer in participants without a history of VT insertion and in those where larger sized VTs were inserted in both age-groups. Male gender had an influence on extrusion time in children. In addition, a history of VT insertion and VT size were determined to be factors related to extrusion before 12 months in children. Conclusion: History of VT insertion and VT size were significantly related to VT extrusion time in both children and adults and defined as factors associated with extrusion before 12 months in children. The findings suggest avoiding VT with a diameter < 1 mm and considering an appropriately larger size in patients with a history of VT insertion to optimize VT retention.

Background Changes in renal function in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients receiving direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are controversial. The evolution of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in these patients remains unclear. Methods A total of 232 CHC patients receiving DAA at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital from May 2016 to February 2019, were enrolled in this retrospective study. Grade 2/3 renal function deterioration, defined as a decrease in eGFR between 10% and 50% from baseline (BL) to 12 weeks after the end of treatment (P12), was investigated for its association with BL characteristics. The changes in renal function and NGAL levels were also analyzed at the SOF-base or nonSOF-base DAA. Results Sixty-two patients (26.7%) had grade 2/3 renal function deterioration at P12 after DAA therapy. Univariate analysis showed that it was associated with age (P = 0.038). Multivariate analysis indicated that age (OR = 1.033, 95% CI: 1.004–1.064, P = 0.027), sex (male; OR = 2.039, 95% CI: 1.093–3.804, P = 0.025), ACEI/ARB use (OR = 2.493, 95% CI: 1.016–6.119, P = 0.046), and BL NGAL (OR = 1.033, 95% CI: 1.001–1.067, P = 0.046) positively correlated with grade 2/3 renal function deterioration. Furthermore, eGFR was decreased (P = 0.009) and NGAL was increased (P = 0.004) from BL to P12 in CHC patients receiving SOF-based DAA. Conclusions Of the CHC patients receiving DAA therapy, 26.7% had grade 2/3 renal function deterioration at P12, and it was associated with older age, gender being male, ACEI/ARB use, and higher BL NGAL levels. In addition, NGAL might be a biomarker of nephrotoxicity at P12 in patients receiving SOF-based DAA.

We introduce a real-time deep learning-based face synthesis technology for photoreal AI-avatars, and demonstrate two novel applications. We showcase the first zero-shot real-time deepfake system allowing anyone to swap their faces with another subject. Then, we demonstrate how this technology can enable an AI-based photoreal virtual assistant.

Deposition of layers of graphene on silicon has the potential for a wide range of optoelectronic and mechanical applications. However, direct growth of graphene on silicon has been difficult due to the inert, oxidized silicon surfaces. Transferring graphene from metallic growth substrates to silicon is not a good solution either, because most transfer methods involve multiple steps that often lead to polymer residues or degradation of sample quality. Here we report a single-step method for large-area direct growth of continuous horizontal graphene sheets and vertical graphene nano-walls on silicon substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) without active heating. Comprehensive studies utilizing Raman spectroscopy, x-ray/ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS/UPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical transmission are carried out to characterize the quality and properties of these samples. Data gathered by the residual gas analyzer (RGA) during the growth process further provide information about the synthesis mechanism. Texture modification of foods by using thickening agents is a routine practice for assessing and treating dysphagic patients. However, a powder-thickened fluid's viscosity might change over time, and little has been proposed to overcome this inconsistency. This study aimed to evaluate variations in the thickness of a fluid thickened with a common xanthan gum–based powder and to explore the feasibility of a simple advanced preparation method for thickened liquids to improve thickness stability. Thickened fluids with concentrations of 1.0 g/100 mL, 0.7 g/100 mL, and 0.5 g/100 mL were prepared from both freshly opened and previously opened thickening powders. Fluid thickness was measured every 10 min in a series of International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative flow tests. A significant time-dependent decline in thickness was observed for all three concentrations in both groups, namely those prepared with freshly opened and previously opened thickening powders, and the shortest periods to achieve a stable viscosity after liquid preparation for the two groups were 80 and 70 min, respectively. On diluting the thickened liquids from the base liquid, which was prepared at a concentration of 1.0 g/100 mL and stored at room temperature for 90 min, no significant time-dependent thickness changes were observed over the following 60 min. The simple protocol of preparing the thickest "base" liquid in advance and then diluting it to the desired thickness resulted in a consistent liquid thickness, with the prepared liquids ready to be clinically applied and consumed, with high stability within 60 min.

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (sCSF) leak from the skull base has been previously reported, but there are few reports of sCSF leak from the foramen rotundum due to its rare occurrence. This case report describes a 15-year-old male patient that presented with left side watery rhinorrhoea that had been present since he was 4 years of age and a history of repeated bouts of meningitis of unknown cause. A discharge sample from the nose tested positive for beta-2 transferrin. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) revealed a fistula between the cerebellopontine angle and the left sphenoid sinus. There was also a pseudo-Chiari malformation type I with ectopia of the cerebellar tonsil. Endoscopic transnasal surgery identified a leak from the foramen rotundum that was repaired using autologous material and a contralateral pedicle nasoseptal flap. At 6 months after surgery, the patient reported no recurrence of the CSF leakage. Postoperative CT imaging revealed that the cerebellar tonsil was back in the normal position, indicating that the preoperative Chiari malformation was possibly due to decreased CSF volume. This current case shows that a rare case of sCSF leak from the foramen rotundum can be effectively repaired using the endoscopic transnasal approach.

Background/purpose To investigate the impact of pharmaceutical care programs for the management of contraindicated drug–drug interactions (DDIs) in direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) therapy. Methods A prospective observational study was performed at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital between January 2018 and December 2019. Pharmacists screened DDIs for all hepatitis C patients before DAA therapy. The study outcome included the frequency of contraindicated DDIs, acceptance rate, and cost avoidance of the pharmaceutical care program. Results A total of 1053 patients were enrolled in the study, with a mean age of 67.1 ± 11.9 years. Most patients received therapy with sofosbuvir/ledipasvir (37.1%; n = 391), elbasvir/grazoprevir (23.8%; n = 251), or glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (21.1%; n = 222). A total of 796 (75.6%) patients received at least one co-medication, with the average number of co-medications being 5.2 per patient (SD: 4.4/patient). In total, 1356 DDIs were identified, with the average DDIs per patient of 1.3 (SD: 1.7). For patients with contraindicated DDIs (2%, n = 102), statins and amiodarone were the most common co-medications. Physicians often accepted pharmacists’ recommendations (acceptance rate of 72.5%) or withheld co-medication to avoid severe adverse drug events (ADEs). The estimated cost avoidance of preventable ADEs was USD 14,033 for contraindicated DDIs with pharmaceutical care programs. Conclusion The implementation of pharmaceutical care programs in DAA therapy provides a favorable outcome and substantial cost avoidance.

Background/Purpose To evaluate the therapeutic responsiveness of office-based salivary gland ductal irrigation in patients with chronic sialoadenitis. Methods Between August 2017 and April 2019, 55 patients comprising the following three disease groups were enrolled: Sjogren’s syndrome: 39 patients; postradiotherapy sialoadenitis: ten patients; and post-RAI sialoadenitis: six patients. Quantitative salivary scintigraphy was recorded, and a formulated questionnaire including the Summated Xerostomia Inventory was utilized to assess acute/chronic symptoms. All patients received at least three serial salivary gland ductal irrigations with a one-month interval in our outpatient department. Results The general response rates for each disease groups are as follows: Sjogren’s syndrome: 61.5% (24/39); postradiotherapy: 60% (6/10); and post-RAI: 83.3% (5/6). Among the patients with Sjogren’s syndrome, the parotid scintigraphic Tmin showed a significant positive correlation with the responsiveness of salivary irrigation (P = 0.046), whereas the treatment tended to be irresponsive in patients who previously took medicine for their related discomfort (P = 0.009). In the postradiotherapy and post-RAI groups, no significant factors were found to be associated with the responsiveness of irrigation. Conclusion Simple salivary ductal irrigation without complex equipment can be performed as an outpatient procedure to alleviate glandular swelling or xerostomia in patients with Sjogren's syndrome, postradiotherapy sialoadenitis or post-RAI sialoadenitis, and it can be considered an alternative management approach for patients refractory to conventional strategies.

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) is a recently identified neoplasm of the salivary glands, which harbors the distinctive ETV6-NTRK3 oncogenic fusion gene from other salivary malignant tumors. MASC shares morphologic characteristics with acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), and is more likely to metastasize to the regional lymph nodes. Thus differentiation among other salivary gland tumors is important. We present a rare pediatric case of parotid gland MASC in a 12-year-old girl and a review of world literature.

Competitor and alliance orientations represent different organizational logics, but their combined effects on product innovation outcomes remain unclear. To address this issue, the authors use the concept of fit and propose a comprehensive conceptualization of the combination of competitor and alliance orientations; additionally, we empirically identify the combined effects of balance, alignment, and the interaction on product innovativeness. A causal-explanatory, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based design with purposive sampling was conducted. The empirical assessment used a sample of 139 senior managers in Taiwan's electronics industry (with a valid response rate of 16.85%). Research hypotheses were evaluated using partial least squares structural equation modeling, analysis of covariance, and quantile regression analyses. The results show that the relative imbalance between the competitor and alliance orientations is not significantly associated with product innovativeness. Aligning these two orientations significantly improves product innovativeness, which supports the matching perspective of coalignment. Furthermore, in relation to fit as moderation, the interaction between the two orientations is negatively related to product innovativeness. These results provide a new lens through which scholars can assess and measure the joint effects of competitor and alliance orientations and offer managerial guidance to practitioners.

We propose the design and working principle of a plasmonic concentric compound lens (CCL) comprising inner circular nanoslits and outer circular nanogrooves. Dual-wavelength operations have been achieved for 650 and 750 nm at nanoscale and microscale focal lengths along with their depth of focus (DOF). By tuning the arrangement of nanogrooves, the axial resolution can be modulated and the narrowest DOF is achieved by a design of gradually decreasing groove width. For the ultrahigh tunability of axial resolution, DOF over 400 nm for both working wavelengths is also achieved. We not only developed an approximate-perturbed-focus model for explaining the performance of DOF but also found an extraordinary way to improve the resolution. The enhanced resonance of central disk as nannoantenna in CCL also has great influence on nanofocusing with different deigns of outer nanogrooves. We present a fully automatic framework that digitizes a complete 3D head with hair from a single unconstrained image. Our system offers a practical and consumer-friendly end-to-end solution for avatar personalization in gaming and social VR applications. The reconstructed models include secondary components (eyes, teeth, tongue, and gums) and provide animation-friendly blendshapes and joint-based rigs. While the generated face is a high-quality textured mesh, we propose a versatile and efficient polygonal strips (polystrips) representation for the hair. Polystrips are suitable for an extremely wide range of hairstyles and textures and are compatible with existing game engines for real-time rendering. In addition to integrating state-of-the-art advances in facial shape modeling and appearance inference, we propose a novel single-view hair generation pipeline, based on 3D-model and texture retrieval, shape refinement, and polystrip patching optimization. The performance of our hairstyle retrieval is enhanced using a deep convolutional neural network for semantic hair attribute classification. Our generated models are visually comparable to state-of-the-art game characters designed by professional artists. For real-time settings, we demonstrate the flexibility of polystrips in handling hairstyle variations, as opposed to conventional strand-based representations. We further show the effectiveness of our approach on a large number of images taken in the wild, and how compelling avatars can be easily created by anyone.

Purpose While the importance of salesperson market orientation behavior (SMOB) is widely acknowledged, as evidenced by the increasing research attention this concept is receiving, discussion of its antecedents and consequences in the literature remains limited. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the antecedents of SMOB and the underlying process through which it influences sales performance. Design/methodology/approach A causal model was developed to analyze the antecedents and consequences of SMOB. This proposed model and various hypotheses were tested using data obtained from a sample of 264 salespeople in the Taiwanese financial services industry. Findings The learning orientation and behavioral controls of salespeople positively influence SMOB. In addition, SMOB plays a critical role in improving two types of “working-smart” behaviors (i.e., sales planning and adaptive selling), thereby achieving better sales performance. Originality/value This report sheds light on the importance of SMOB in today’s personal sales environment and uncovers the underlying mechanisms through which SMOB contributes to sales performance. It also offers specific guidelines for the assessment and management of SMOB to enhance the performance of salespeople within the financial services industry.

Even though the importance of team reflexivity in new product development (NPD) has been well noted in the literature, little attention has been paid to its determinants. Based on the resource-based view, this study proposes that project management skills, task familiarity, and procedural justice are useful to improve team reflexivity. As such, this study also examines the influences that these antecedents and team reflexivity have on NPD. A research framework is proposed along with 10 major hypotheses. To test these, data were collected from 186 team members from NPD teams in Taiwanese high-tech firms, and the partial least square results of confirm that all three of the proposed antecedents have direct impacts on team reflexivity and NPD performance. Task familiarity had the highest mediation effect on the influence of project management skills on NPD performance, followed by team reflexivity and procedural justice. Since previous studies largely ignored the effects of antecedents on team reflexivity and NPD performance, this study provides useful insights for both academics and practitioners.

Using gamification to improve behavioral intentions is proposed.Understanding website features is critical for successful gamification.Utilitarian features and hedonic features significantly affect user experience.User experience significantly affects perception of value and attitude.The mediating effects of user experience and attitude are confirmed. The purposes of this study are mainly to investigate the relationships among website features (i.e. utilitarian and hedonic features), user experience, perceived value (i.e. information value, experiential value, social value, and transaction value), user attitude, and behavioral intentions (i.e. intention to use and word-of-mouth intention), and additionally the mediating effects of user experience and attitude are also explored in this study in an online gamification context. Specifically, this study applies a structural equation model to test the causal relationships among those website features, user experience, perceived value, user experience, and behavioral intentions in an online gamification context. Results show that both utilitarian features and hedonic features have significant impact on users experience, which in turn affects their perception of value and attitude. Users perceptions of information and transaction value also significantly affect their attitude, and in turn affect their behavioral intentions. Besides, the mediating effects of user experience and attitude are also confirmed in this study. To summarize, the findings of this study can help website managers improve their users perceptions of value and attitude more effectively and act as a guide for research and development (R&D) of gamification to acquire competitive advantage and further evoke desired behavioral intentions.

We investigated the impact of serum cholesterol levels on 30-day mortality after ischemic stroke in dialysis patients.From the Taiwan Stroke Registry data, we identified 46,770 ischemic stroke cases, including 1101 dialysis patients and 45,669 nondialysis patients from 2006 to 2013.Overall, the 30-day mortality was 1.46-fold greater in the dialysis group than in the nondialysis group (1.75 versus 1.20 per 1000 person-days). The mortality rates were 1.64, .62, 2.82, and 2.23 per 1000 person-days in dialysis patients with serum total cholesterol levels of 120 mg/dL, 120-159 mg/dL, 160-199 mg/dL, and ≥200 mg/dL, respectively. Compared to dialysis patients with serum total cholesterol levels of 120-159 mg/dL, the corresponding adjusted hazard ratios of mortality were 4.20 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01-17.4), 8.06 (95% CI = 2.02-32.2), and 6.89 (95% CI = 1.59-29.8) for those with cholesterol levels of 120 mg/dL, 160-199 mg/dL, and ≥200 mg/dL, respectively.Dialysis patients with serum total cholesterol levels of ≥160 mg/dL or 120 mg/dL on admission are at an elevated hazard of 30-day mortality after ischemic stroke.

We report on the first demonstration of metal–insulator–semiconductor-type plasmonic lasers at the telecom wavelength (∼1.3 μm) using top-down fabricated semiconductor waveguides on single-crystalline metallic platforms formed using epitaxially grown Ag films. The critical role of the Ag film thickness in sustaining plasmonic lasing at the telecom wavelength is investigated systematically. Low-threshold (0.2 MW/cm2) and continuous-wave operation of plasmonic lasing at cryogenic temperatures can be achieved on a 150 nm Ag platform with minimum radiation leakage into the substrate. Plasmonic lasing occurs preferentially through higher-order surface-plasmon-polariton modes, which exhibit a higher mode confinement factor, lower propagation loss, and better field–gain coupling. We observed plasmonic lasing up to ∼200 K under pulsed excitations. The plasmonic lasers on large-area epitaxial Ag films open up a scalable platform for on-chip integrations of plasmonics and optoelectronics at the telecom wavelength.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) osteomyelitis is a rare complication after vaccination. This article reports on a 1-year-old immunocompetent boy with recurrent BCG osteomyelitis involving the distal tibia who presented with a limping gait from the beginning of toddling. The lesion was located in the metaphysis and crossed the growth plate to the epiphysis, causing concern for ambulation. After surgery, he was initiated on an individualized, intense rehabilitation program and achieved a good functional recovery. Rehabilitation programs with gait analyses provide effective therapeutic and monitoring methods for toddlers recovering from BCG osteomyelitis.

AIM To evaluate feasibility of establishing a clinically applicable reference value through those unaffected salivary gland on sialoscintigraphic data obtained from patients presented with obstructive sialadenitis affected a single gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-one patients suffered from single salivary gland swelling, pain/tenderness and received sialoscintigraphic examinations were retrospectively enrolled. The quantitative data parameters, including the uptake ratio, maximal accumulation, maximal excretion, time to maximal (Tmax) and time to minimal (Tmin) activity of the affected and unaffected glands, were calculated for analysis. Data were also obtained and recorded for comparison from 50 patients who fulfill the American-European criteria for the diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome. Joint image-text embedding is the bedrock for most Vision-and-Language (V+L) tasks, where multimodality inputs are simultaneously processed for joint visual and textual understanding. In this paper, we introduce UNITER, a UNiversal Image-TExt Representation, learned through large-scale pre-training over four image-text datasets (COCO, Visual Genome, Conceptual Captions, and SBU Captions), which can power heterogeneous downstream V+L tasks with joint multimodal embeddings. We design four pre-training tasks: Masked Language Modeling (MLM), Masked Region Modeling (MRM, with three variants), Image-Text Matching (ITM), and Word-Region Alignment (WRA). Different from previous work that applies joint random masking to both modalities, we use conditional masking on pre-training tasks (i.e., masked language/region modeling is conditioned on full observation of image/text). In addition to ITM for global image-text alignment, we also propose WRA via the use of Optimal Transport (OT) to explicitly encourage fine-grained alignment between words and image regions during pre-training. Comprehensive analysis shows that both conditional masking and OT-based WRA contribute to better pre-training. We also conduct a thorough ablation study to find an optimal combination of pre-training tasks. Extensive experiments show that UNITER achieves new state of the art across six V+L tasks (over nine datasets), including Visual Question Answering, Image-Text Retrieval, Referring Expression Comprehension, Visual Commonsense Reasoning, Visual Entailment, and NLVR\(^2\) (Code is available at https://github.com/ChenRocks/UNITER.).

Recent Transformer-based large-scale pre-trained models have revolutionized vision-and-language (V+L) research. Models such as ViLBERT, LXMERT and UNITER have significantly lifted state of the art across a wide range of V+L benchmarks. However, little is known about the inner mechanisms that destine their impressive success. To reveal the secrets behind the scene, we present Value (Vision-And-Language Understanding Evaluation), a set of meticulously designed probing tasks (e.g., Visual Coreference Resolution, Visual Relation Detection) generalizable to standard pre-trained V+L models, to decipher the inner workings of multimodal pre-training (e.g., implicit knowledge garnered in individual attention heads, inherent cross-modal alignment learned through contextualized multimodal embeddings). Through extensive analysis of each archetypal model architecture via these probing tasks, our key observations are: (i) Pre-trained models exhibit a propensity for attending over text rather than images during inference. (ii) There exists a subset of attention heads that are tailored for capturing cross-modal interactions. (iii) Learned attention matrix in pre-trained models demonstrates patterns coherent with the latent alignment between image regions and textual words. (iv) Plotted attention patterns reveal visually-interpretable relations among image regions. (v) Pure linguistic knowledge is also effectively encoded in the attention heads. These are valuable insights serving to guide future work towards designing better model architecture and objectives for multimodal pre-training. Large-scale pre-trained language model such as BERT has achieved great success in language understanding tasks. However, it remains an open question how to utilize BERT for language generation. In this paper, we present a novel approach, Conditional Masked Language Modeling (C-MLM), to enable the finetuning of BERT on target generation tasks. The finetuned BERT (teacher) is exploited as extra supervision to improve conventional Seq2Seq models (student) for better text generation performance. By leveraging BERT's idiosyncratic bidirectional nature, distilling knowledge learned in BERT can encourage auto-regressive Seq2Seq models to plan ahead, imposing global sequence-level supervision for coherent text generation. Experiments show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms strong Transformer baselines on multiple language generation tasks such as machine translation and text summarization. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) affect the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection. This study evaluated the function of Tregs in CHC patients receiving the standard direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) treatment. CHC patients (n = 20) who received DAA treatment, clinical data, and function of Tregs were checked at baseline, Week 4, end of treatment (EOT), and 12 weeks after EOT (SVR 12). Treg-mediated inhibition was measured. The cytokine expression and fold change of interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-10, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β with/without Treg inhibition were also detected. The cohort included 14 females with a mean age of 59.8 ± 11.5 years. Nineteen had HCV genotype 1. The HCV RNA level was 6.17 ± 0.70 log IU/mL. All patients reached the sustained virologic response. The frequency of CD4+Foxp3+T cells decreased from baseline to EOT and returned at SVR 12. The inhibitory function of Tregs decreased during treatment and then restored (baseline vs. EOT, P = 0.0393; EOT vs. SVR 12, P = 0.0052). The cytokine expression and fold change of IFN-γ and TNF-α were highest at EOT and then decreased at SVR 12. The fold change of IL-10 was lowest at EOT and then increased at SVR 12. The fold change of TGF-β was significantly increased at Week 4 and SVR 12 compared to baseline. The frequency and inhibitory function of Tregs declined gradually from baseline to EOT and then increased from EOT to SVR 12 in CHC patients receiving DAA therapy. Objectives: Holmium: YAG laser has gained its popularity throughout the years and is used to treat sialolithiasis, which helps to overcome the limitations of traditional sialendoscopic lithotripsy for larger-sized salivary stones. However, little information is available regarding factors predicting the success rate of Holmium: YAG laser intraductal lithotripsy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the success rates of Holmium: YAG laser lithotripsy for salivary stones treatment in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A retrospective study conducted in patients receiving sialolithiasis surgery under sialendoscopy from May 2013 to March 2015 at Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. Data on various factors, including patients’ age, gender, glands, size of largest stone, multiple stones (≥2 stones), location of the stone (distal duct, middle duct, proximal duct, and hilum), and operative time. The success of the surgery defined as patients without any complaints such as swelling or tenderness. Logistic regression and Fisher exact tests were employed to examine these factors on the success rate. Results: Fifty-four patients who received sialendoscopy surgery with a mean age of 35.74 years old recruited. Logistic regression identified the operation time exceeding 210 minutes showed 23.497 folds higher odd ratio of having a result of operation failure ( P < .05). Conclusion: The prolonged operation time is the sole independent factor affecting the successful outcome for salivary gland intraductal laser lithotripsy. We recommend operative time be no more than 210 minutes to increase the success rate in salivary gland Holmium: YAG laser intraductal lithotripsy.

Marketing-R&D integration has been recognized as a key success factor of the NPD (new product development) programs. Although previous research has differentiated two integrative approaches (i.e., interaction and collaboration), a theoretical gap remains unaddressed: whether there is a relationship between Marketing-R&D interaction and collaboration? Lack of knowledge at this point not only shows a cleft in theory, but also prevents us from offering useful guidance for practitioners to better NPD practices and results. The present research, from an interpersonal interaction perspective, explores and tests interaction-based antecedents of Marketing-R&D collaboration. The results of a survey of 94 semiconductor companies in Taiwan provide fresh evidence for the effects of selected predictors on the collaboration. While academics and practitioners are increasingly aware of the value of including the customer in new product development (NPD), processes for doing so effectively remain unclear. Therefore, this study explores the process through which a firm's interaction orientation (the ability to effectively interact with customers) influences product development performance. Drawing on the resource-based view, this study develops a research model in which two market-relating capabilities—market-linking and marketing capabilities—mediate the effect of interaction orientation on product development performance. The validity of this model is examined by analyzing primary data gathered from 167 Taiwanese electronics companies. The model results provide support for a process link between interaction orientation, market-relating capabilities, and product development performance, such that a firm's capabilities enable the conversion of customer-based resources into productive new product outcomes. More specifically, the interaction orientation–product development speed relationship is mediated by both marketing and market-linking capabilities, while the interaction orientation–product innovativeness relationship is partially mediated by marketing capability. That is, interaction orientation has indirect effects on product innovativeness and product development speed by strengthening both marketing and market-linking capabilities that in turn improve product development performance. In addition, the results suggest that a firm's interactive rationality moderates the relationship between interaction orientation and marketing capability. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of how firms achieve superior product development performance by developing effective customer interaction. Multi-hop reading comprehension requires the model to explore and connect relevant information from multiple sentences/documents in order to answer the question about the context. To achieve this, we propose an interpretable 3-module system called Explore-Propose-Assemble reader (EPAr). First, the Document Explorer iteratively selects relevant documents and represents divergent reasoning chains in a tree structure so as to allow assimilating information from all chains. The Answer Proposer then proposes an answer from every root-to-leaf path in the reasoning tree. Finally, the Evidence Assembler extracts a key sentence containing the proposed answer from every path and combines them to predict the final answer. Intuitively, EPAr approximates the coarse-to-fine-grained comprehension behavior of human readers when facing multiple long documents. We jointly optimize our 3 modules by minimizing the sum of losses from each stage conditioned on the previous stage's output. On two multi-hop reading comprehension datasets WikiHop and MedHop, our EPAr model achieves significant improvements over the baseline and competitive results compared to the state-of-the-art model. Given different strategic logics and implications of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and alliance orientation (AO), this study develops an integrative model of an alignment between EO and AO in the context of new product development (NPD) and articulates the results of a study designed to examine its effects on a firm's NPD activities and performance outcomes. The authors empirically investigate the model through a cross-sectional survey of 141 Taiwanese electronics firms. Drawing from the coalignment perspective, these firms are distinguished into four strategic groups labeled as EO (high EO and low AO), AO (low EO and high AO), EA (high EO and high AO), and CO (low EO and low AO) firms. Empirical results suggest that the four groups of firms significantly differ in terms of NPD process characteristics (decision-making flexibility, market-focused learning, and internally focused learning), program characteristics (product program meaningfulness and newness), and performance outcome (new product success). Theoretical and managerial implications of the results are demonstrated.

Subwavelength focusing is crucial for many applications in photonics including super-resolution micro/nanoscopy, nanolithography, and optical trapping. However, most nanostructures exhibit poor ability to modulate focusing spot, which makes them hard to achieve ultra-small resolution. Here, we propose three kinds of plasmonic lens (PL) by utilizing different meta-aperture designs for efficient subwavelength focusing modulation. The shape of nanoaperture strongly influences the diffraction properties. Spatial modulation of focusing spot by employing a circular array of proposed nanoapertures is explored. The best focusing performance among these PLs is the design of T-shape nanoaperture, which has great resolution achieving ultra-small focusing spot of 0.14 λ2 and 0.20 λ2 (λ = 633 nm) for simulation and experiment respectively, better than lots of focusing devices especially by using linear polarization. Multiple-object trapping can be realized by using T-shape nanoaperture-based PL. Our designed PLs with different nanoapertures demonstrate the capability to broaden and integrate different functionalities for on-chip nanotechnologies development.

ObjectivesTo illuminate the association between interferon-based therapy (IBT) and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).Design, setting, participants and interventionsThis retrospective cohort study used Taiwan’s Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 that included 18 971 patients with HCV infection between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2012. We identified 1966 patients with HCV infection who received IBT (treated cohort) and used 1:4 propensity score-matching to select 7864 counterpart controls who did not receive IBT (untreated cohort).Outcome measuresAll study participants were followed until the end of 2012 to calculate the incidence rate and risk of incident RA.ResultsDuring the study period, 305 RA events (3.1%) occurred. The incidence rate of RA was significantly lower in the treated cohort than the untreated cohort (4.0 compared with 5.5 per 1000 person-years, pConclusionsThis study demonstrates that IBT may reduce the risk of RA and contributes to growing evidence that HCV infection may lead to development of RA.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, particularly the direct-gap monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are currently being developed for various atomically thin optoelectronic devices. However, practical applications are hindered by their low quantum efficiencies in light emissions and absorptions. While photonic cavities and metallic plasmonic structures can significantly enhance the light–matter interactions in TMDs, the narrow spectral resonance and the local hot spots considerably limit the applications when broadband and large area are required. Here, we demonstrate that a properly designed distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) can be an ideal platform for light-coupling enhancement in 2D TMDs. The main idea is based on engineering the amplitude and phase of optical reflection from the DBR to produce optimal substrate-induced interference. This study has completed the design and production of an innovative 3D display device system, which can be applied to augmented reality technologies. To complete the installation, perform the following steps: A. multiple plane images generated by the image output unit, the time each plane image produces is different. And the plane images are respectively the planes of different depth positions in a complete stereoscopic image. B. by the imaging module position changes, resulting in different object distance, so different depth positions corresponding to the foregoing planar image are imaged. So as to form the complete three-dimensional image by combining the aforementioned planar images by means of visual residue.

Background Macrophage heterogeneity is the main feature of the tumour microenvironment. Breast cancer is one of the most life-threatening cancers. However, macrophage polarization patterns in different tumour stages and the importance of its relationship to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in breast cancer remains highly unclear. The present study investigated the patterns of monocyte differentiation and macrophage polarization in breast cancer. Methods Patients with breast cancer (n = 48) and healthy controls (n = 39) were prospectively recruited. The percentages and subsets of circulating macrophage-like cells were analysed by flow cytometry, and the polarization patterns of these cells in the peripheral blood of patients with breast cancer were compared with those of healthy controls. In addition, macrophage polarization patterns in different stages and HER2 status in breast cancer were investigated. Results The percentages of circulating macrophages, which are defined as PM-2 K+ cells in the peripheral blood, were significantly higher in patients with breast cancer than in healthy controls. The percentages of M1-like macrophages were significantly lower, but those of M2-like macrophages were significantly higher in patients with breast cancer than in healthy controls. The percentage of M2c-like macrophages was significantly higher in advanced (stages II and III) breast cancer. However, the patterns of macrophage polarization were not associated with HER2 status in breast cancer. Conclusions Aberrant macrophage polarization was observed in breast cancer and was correlated with breast cancer stage. These quantitative data may provide new molecular biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets in breast cancer.
