Its unique X-ray beam parameters enable groundbreaking experiments in matter at extreme conditions at the High Energy Density (HED) scientific instrument. The performance of the HED instrument during its first two years of operation, its scientific remit, as well as ongoing installations towards full operation are presented. Scientific goals of HED include the investigation of extreme states of matter created by intense laser pulses, diamond anvil cells, or pulsed magnets, and ultrafast X-ray methods that allow their diagnosis using self-amplified spontaneous emission between 5 and 25 keV, coupled with X-ray monochromators and optional seeded beam operation. This includes beamline optics, sample positioning and detector systems located in the multipurpose vacuum chamber. Concepts for pump–probe X-ray diffraction experiments in the DAC are described and their implementation demonstrated during the First User Community Assisted Commissioning experiment. This paper describes a detailed simulation of the influence of optical imperfections in a multilayer Bragg mirror-based split-and-delay unit on the focused and unfocused beam profiles with relative time delays within the coherence time for hard X-ray pump/X-ray probe experiments at the European XFEL., For the High-Energy-Density (HED) beamline at the SASE2 undulator of the European XFEL, a hard X-ray split-and-delay unit (SDU) has been built enabling time-resolved pump/probe experiments with photon energies between 5 keV and 24 keV. The optical layout of the SDU is based on geometrical wavefront splitting and multilayer Bragg mirrors. Maximum delays between Δτ = ±1 ps at 24 keV and Δτ = ±23 ps at 5 keV will be possible. Time-dependent wavefront propagation simulations were performed by means of the Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) software in order to investigate the impact of the optical layout, including diffraction on the beam splitter and recombiner edges and the three-dimensional topography of all eight mirrors, on the spatio-temporal properties of the XFEL pulses. The radiation is generated from noise by the code FAST which simulates the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) process. A fast Fourier transformation evaluation of the disturbed interference pattern yields for ideal mirror surfaces a coherence time of τc = 0.23 fs and deduces one of τc = 0.21 fs for the real mirrors, thus with an error of Δτ = 0.02 fs which is smaller than the deviation resulting from shot-to-shot fluctuations of SASE2 pulses. The wavefronts are focused by means of compound refractive lenses in order to achieve fluences of a few hundred mJ mm−2 within a spot width of 20 µm (FWHM) diameter. Coherence effects and optics imperfections increase the peak intensity between 200 and 400% for pulse delays within the coherence time. Additionally, the influence of two off-set mirrors in the HED beamline are discussed. Further, we show the fluence distribution for Δz = ±3 mm around the focal spot along the optical axis. The simulations show that the topographies of the mirrors of the SDU are good enough to support X-ray pump/X-ray probe experiments.

High-energy and high-intensity lasers are essential for pushing the boundaries of science. Their development has allowed leaps forward in basic research areas, including laser–plasma interaction, high-energy density science, metrology, biology and medical technology. The Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields user consortium contributes and operates two high-peak-power optical lasers using the high energy density instrument at the European X-ray free electron laser (EuXFEL) facility. These lasers will be used to generate transient extreme states of density and temperature to be probed by the X-ray beam. This paper introduces the ReLaX laser, a short-pulse high-intensity Ti:Sa laser system, and discusses its characteristics as available for user experiments. It will also present the first experimental commissioning results validating its successful integration into the EuXFEL infrastructure and viability as a relativistic-intensity laser driver.

Review of scientific instruments 92(1), 013101 (2021). doi:10.1063/5.0022886, We introduce a setup to measure high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering at the High Energy Density scientific instrument at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). The setup uses the Si (533) reflection in a channel-cut monochromator and three spherical diced analyzer crystals in near-backscattering geometry to reach a high spectral resolution. An energy resolution of 44 meV is demonstrated for the experimental setup, close to the theoretically achievable minimum resolution. The analyzer crystals and detector are mounted on a curved-rail system, allowing quick and reliable changes in scattering angle without breaking vacuum. The entire setup is designed for operation at 10 Hz, the same repetition rate as the high-power lasers available at the instrument and the fundamental repetition rate of the European XFEL. The spectrometer is designed to be operated primarily between 5 and 15 keV to complement the operating photon energy range of the HED instrument. Four Highly Annealed Pyrolitic Graphite (HAPG) crystals are characterised with thicknesses of 40 μm or 100 μm and radius-of-curvature 50 mm or 80 mm, in conjunction with either an ePix100 or Jungfrau detector. The achieved resolution with the 50 mm crystals, operated between 6.5 and 9 keV, matches that reported previously: ~8 eV for a thickness of 40 μm, whereas, with an 80 mm crystal of thickness 40 μm, the resolution exceeds that expected. Namely, a resolution of 2 eV is demonstrated between 5–6 keV implying a resolving power of 2800. Therefore, we posit that flatter HAPG crystals, with their high reflectivity and improved resolving power, are a powerful tool for hard x-ray scattering and emission experiments allowing unprecedented measurements of collective scattering in a single shot., Published by Inst. of Physics, London

The development at STFC’s Central Laser Facility (CLF) of multi-slab gas cooled amplifier technology based on ceramic Yb:YAG, known as DiPOLE, is well known within the field [1]. Previous successes using this laser architecture include a 10 J, 10 Hz prototype system and demonstration of the world’s first 100 J, 10 Hz, 10 ns system (DiPOLE100), supplied to and commissioned at the HiLASE facility[2]. The success of the first kW-class 100 J nanosecond pulsed laser led to development of a second system to be made available to users of the HED Instrument at the European XFEL in collaboration with HiBEF / HZDR. This system, DiPOLE-100X, will be used for fundamental research into the structure and compression of materials, such as present in extrasolar planets [3]. DIPOLE-100X will provide nanosecond, user defined, temporally shaped pulses that once frequency doubled and focussed on target, create the pressure and temperature states of matter relevant to exoplanetary interiors. These changes can then be probed using the bright x-ray pulses of the European XFEL. DIPOLE-100X is scheduled for completion at the end of summer, before shipment to the European XFEL later in the year. In this paper we will present the operational and commissioning results for DiPOLE-100X, highlighting design changes and upgrades over the first generation, along with future developments of DiPOLE technology at the CLF.

We have proposed, designed and built a dual-channel x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer (XICS) for spectrally- and spatially-resolved x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) measurements in the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) end station at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). This spectrometer employs two spherically-bent germanium (Ge) 220 crystals, which are combined to form a large aperture dispersive element with a spectral bandwidth of ~300 eV that enables both the elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering peaks to be simultaneously measured. The apparatus and its characterization are described. A resolving power of ~1900 was demonstrated and a spatial resolution of ~12 μm was achieved in calibration tests. The advancements in bright and coherent X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) have in the last decade revolutionized diverse fields of study, leading to an ever-increasing demand in more intense X-ray pulses. The accurate knowledge of the wavefront and the focal profile of such pulses ultimately dictates much of the experimental outcome. Here we present a single-shot shearing interferometry method to measure the wavefront of a focused hard XFEL pulse. Two identical transmission gratings are placed near the focus, and the interference pattern of overlapping diffraction orders is analyzed, resulting in a two-dimensional reconstruction of the X-ray wavefront. The spatial resolution and wavefront sensitivity can be tuned in-situ during the measurement. The method is non-invasive (i.e., the zeroth order or transmitted pulse is not modified in intensity or profile), allowing for either a simultaneous intensity measurement at high resolution or a fully characterized transmitted pulse for general experimental use.

International audience; We describe a setup for performing inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) endstation of the Linac Coherent Light Source. This technique is capable of performing high-, meV-resolution measurements of dynamic ion features in both crystalline and non-crystalline materials. A four-bounce silicon (533) monochromator was used in conjunction with three silicon (533) diced crystal analyzers to provide an energy resolution of ∼50 meV over a range of ∼500 meV in single shot measurements. In addition to the instrument resolution function, we demonstrate the measurement of longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in polycrystalline diamond. Furthermore, this setup may be combined with the high intensity laser drivers available at MEC to create warm dense matter and subsequently measure ion acoustic modes.

We present an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) microscope using a Schwarzschild objective which is optimized for single-shot sub-micrometer imaging of laser-plasma targets. The microscope has been designed and constructed for imaging the scattering from an EUV-heated solid-density hydrogen jet. Imaging of a cryogenic hydrogen target was demonstrated using single pulses of the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH) free-electron laser at a wavelength of 13.5 nm. In a single exposure, we observe a hydrogen jet with ice fragments with a spatial resolution in the sub-micrometer range. In situ EUV imaging is expected to enable novel experimental capabilities for warm dense matter studies of micrometer-sized samples in laser-plasma experiments.

We report on the development of a 100 J, 10 Hz cryogenic gas cooled multi-slab Yb:YAG DPSSL system capable of generating temporally shaped pulses from 2 ns to 15 ns. This system will be used for high energy density (HED) experiments at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) facility.

The combination of powerful optical lasers and an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) provides unique capabilities to study the transient behavior of matter in extreme conditions. The high energy density science instrument (HED instrument) at the European XFEL will provide the experimental platform on which an unique x-ray source can be combined with various types of high-power optical lasers. In this paper, we highlight selected scientific examples together with the associated x-ray techniques, with particular emphasis on femtosecond (fs)-timescale pump–probe experiments. Subsequently, we present the current design status of the HED instrument, outlining how the experiments could be performed. First user experiments will start at the beginning of 2018, after which various optical lasers will be commissioned and made available to the international scientific community.

SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics, Prague, Czech Republic; Proceedings of SPIE 10237, 102370S (2017). doi:10.1117/12.2270552, Simulations of experiments at modern light sources, such as optical laser laboratories, synchrotrons, and free electron lasers, become increasingly important for the successful preparation, execution, and analysis of these experiments investigating ever more complex physical systems, e.g. biomolecules, complex materials, and ultra–short lived states of matter at extreme conditions. We have implemented a platform for complete start–to–end simulations of various types of photon science experiments, tracking the radiation from the source through the beam transport optics to the sample or target under investigation, its interaction with and scattering from the sample, and registration in a photon detector. This tool allows researchers and facility operators to simulate their experiments and instruments under real life conditions, identify promising and unattainable regions of the parameter space and ultimately make better use of valuable beamtime. In this paper, we present an overview about status and future development of the simulation platform and discuss three applications: 1.) Single–particle imaging of biomolecules using x–ray free electron lasers and optimization of x–ray pulse properties, 2.) x–ray scattering diagnostics of hot dense plasmas in high power laser–matter interaction and identification of plasma instabilities, and 3.) x–ray absorption spectroscopy in warm dense matter created by high energy laser–matter interaction and pulse shape optimization for low–isentrope dynamic compression., Published by SPIE, Bellingham, Wash.

We present the first spectrally resolved measurements of x-rays scattered from cryogenic hydrogenjets in the single photon counting limit. The 120 Hz capabilities of the LCLS, together with a novelhydrogen jet design [J. B. Kimet al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. (these proceedings)], allow for the ability torecord a near background free spectrum. Such high-dynamic-range x-ray scattering measurementsenable a platform to study ultra-fast, laser-driven, heating dynamics of hydrogen plasmas. Thismeasurement has been achieved using two highly annealed pyrolytic graphite crystal spectrometers tospectrally resolve 5.5 keV x-rays elastically and inelastically scattered from cryogenic hydrogen andfocused on Cornell-SLAC pixel array detectors [S. Herrmannet al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys.Res., Sect. A718, 550 (2013)].

Focal aberrations of large-aperture highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) crystals in von-Hàmos geometry are investigated by experimental and computational methods. A mosaic HOPG crystal film of 100 μm thickness diffracts 8 keV x-rays. This thickness is smaller than the absorption depth of the symmetric 004-reflection, which amounts to 257 μm. Cylindrically bent crystals with 110mm radius of curvature and up to 100 mm collection width produce a X-shaped halo around the focus. This feature vanishes when the collection aperture is reduced, but axial spectral profiles show that the resolution is not affected. X-ray topography reveals significant inhomogeneous crystallite domains of 2±1mm diameter along the entire crystal. Rocking curves shift by about ±20arcmin between domains, while their full width at half-maximum varies between 30 and 50 arcmin. These inhomogeneities are not imprinted at the focal spot, since the monochromatically reflecting area of the crystal is large compared to inhomogeneities. Ray-tracing calculations using a Monte-Carlo-based algorithm developed for mosaic crystals reproduce the X-shaped halo in the focal plane, stemming from the mosaic defocussing in the non-dispersive direction in combination with large apertures. The best achievable resolution is found by analyzing a diversity of rocking curve widths, source sizes and crystal thicknesses for 8 keV x-rays to be ΔE/E ∼ 10-4. We report on the x-ray absorption of Warm Dense Matter experiment at the FLASH Free Electron Laser (FEL) facility at DESY. The FEL beam is used to produce Warm Dense Matter with soft x-ray absorption as the probe of electronic structure. A multilayer-coated parabolic mirror focuses the FEL radiation, to spot sizes as small as 0.3μm in a ∼15fs pulse of containing >10 12 photons at 13.5 nm wavelength, onto a thin sample. Silicon photodiodes measure the transmitted and reflected beams, while spectroscopy provides detailed measurement of the temperature of the sample. The goal is to measure over a range of intensities approaching 10 18 W/cm 2. Experimental results will be presented along with theoretical calculations. A brief report on future FEL efforts will be given. © 2009 SPIE.

Warm dense conditions in titanium foils irradiated with intense femtosecond laser pulses are diagnosed using an x-ray imaging spectroscopy technique. The line shapes of radially resolved titanium Kα spectra are measured with a toroidally bent GaAs crystal and an x-ray charge-coupled device. Measured spectra are compared with the K-shell emissions modeled using an atomic kinetics - spectroscopy simulation code. Kα line shapes are strongly affected by warm (5-40 eV) bulk electron temperatures and imply multiple temperature distributions in the targets. The spatial distribution of temperature is dependent on the target thickness, and a thin target shows an advantage to generate uniform warm dense conditions in a large area.

The article presents preliminary investigation results on the near-surface damage produced by single pulses of XUV free-electron laser in the amorphous α-SiO 2 , the monocrystalline silicon and the epitaxial films of gold. The irradiation was delivered with single pulses of only 25 fs at a wavelength of 32.5 nm and of energy up to 10 μJ. Structural modifications induced by irradiation were characterized by X-ray microdiffraction, as well as by the AFM and optical microscopy. Ablation craters of well-defined edges with smooth interiors and outer embankments surrounding the crater edges were found in the materials. Polycrystalline phases were revealed in Si and Au film samples, in the embankments and in central parts of some craters. In α-SiO 2 , a diffraction pattern typical of an amorphous material was observed without any traces of irradiation-initiated crystallization. A step-like, complete removal of gold film was evidenced inside craters, with only small gold residues in central part of craters exposed to higher fluences.

The extraordinary mechanical and optical properties of diamond are the basis of numerous technical applications and make diamond anvil cells a premier device to explore the high-pressure behavior of materials. However, at applied pressures above a few hundred GPa, optical probing through the anvils becomes difficult because of the pressure-induced changes of the transmission and the excitation of a strong optical emission. Such features have been interpreted as the onset of a closure of the optical gap in diamond, and can significantly impair spectroscopy of the material inside the cell. In contrast, a comparable widening has been predicted for purely hydrostatic compressions, forming a basis for the presumed pressure stiffening of diamond and resilience to the eventual phase change to BC8. We here present the first experimental evidence of this effect at geo-planetary pressures, exceeding the highest ever reported hydrostatic compression of diamond by more than 200 GPa and any other measurement of the band gap by more than 350 GPa. We here apply laser driven-ablation to create a dynamic, high pressure state in a thin, synthetic diamond foil together with frequency-resolved x-ray scattering as a probe. The frequency shift of the inelastically scattered x-rays encodes the optical properties and,more » thus, the behavior of the band gap in the sample. Using the ultra-bright x-ray beam from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), we observe an increasing direct band gap in diamond up to a pressure of 370 GPa. This finding points to the enormous strains in the anvils and the impurities in natural Type Ia diamonds as the source of the observed closure of the optical window. Our results demonstrate that diamond remains an insulating solid to pressures approaching its limit strength.« less

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique for cross-sectional imaging. It is particularly advantageous for applications where conventional microscopy is not able to image deeper layers of samples in a reasonable time, e.g. in fast moving, deeper lying structures. However, at infrared and optical wavelengths, which are commonly used, the axial resolution of OCT is limited to about 1 μm, even if the bandwidth of the light covers a wide spectral range. Here, we present extreme ultraviolet coherence tomography (XCT) and thus introduce a new technique for non-invasive cross-sectional imaging of nanometer structures. XCT exploits the nanometerscale coherence lengths corresponding to the spectral transmission windows of, e.g., silicon samples. The axial resolution of coherence tomography is thus improved from micrometers to a few nanometers. Tomographic imaging with an axial resolution better than 18 nm is demonstrated for layer-type nanostructures buried in a silicon substrate. Using wavelengths in the water transmission window, nanometer-scale layers of platinum are retrieved with a resolution better than 8 nm. XCT as a nondestructive method for sub-surface tomographic imaging holds promise for several applications in semiconductor metrology and imaging in the water window.

The advent of hard x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has opened up a variety of scientific opportunities in areas as diverse as atomic physics, plasma physics, nonlinear optics in the x-ray range and protein crystallography. In this article, we access a new field of science by measuring quantitatively the local bulk properties and dynamics of matter under extreme conditions, in this case by using the short XFEL pulse to image an elastic compression wave in diamond. The elastic wave was initiated by an intense optical laser pulse and was imaged at different delay times after the optical pump pulse using magnified x-ray phase-contrast imaging. The temporal evolution of the shock wave can be monitored, yielding detailed information on shock dynamics, such as the shock velocity, the shock front width and the local compression of the material. The method provides a quantitative perspective on the state of matter in extreme conditions.

International audience; We report on the shot-to-shot stability of intensity and spatial phase of high-harmonic generation (HHG). The intensity stability is measured for each high-harmonic (HH) order with a spectrometer. Additionally, the spatial phase is measured with an XUV wavefront sensor for a single HH order measured in a single shot, which according to our knowledge was not reported before with a Hartmann wavefront sensor. Furthermore, we compare the single-shot measurement of the spatial phase with time-integrated measurements and we show that the XUV wavefront sensor is a useful tool to simultaneously optimize the spatial phase and intensity of HHG within the available HHG parameter range used in this study.

A description of the Matter in Extreme Conditions instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source is given. Recent scientific highlights illustrate phase-contrast imaging of shock waves, X-ray Thomson scattering and X-ray diffraction of shocked materials., The LCLS beam provides revolutionary capabilities for studying the transient behavior of matter in extreme conditions. The particular strength of the Matter in Extreme Conditions instrument is that it combines the unique LCLS beam with high-power optical laser beams, and a suite of dedicated diagnostics tailored for this field of science. In this paper an overview of the beamline, the capabilities of the instrumentation, and selected highlights of experiments and commissioning results are presented.

Review of scientific instruments 88(5), 053501 (2017). doi:10.1063/1.4982166, Tuning the energy of an x-ray probe to an absorption line or edge can provide material-specific measurements that are particularly useful for interfaces. Simulated hard x-ray images above the Fe K-edge are presented to examine ion diffusion across an interface between Fe$_2$O$_3$ and SiO$_2$ aerogel foam materials. The simulations demonstrate the feasibility of such a technique for measurements of density scale lengths near the interface with submicron spatial resolution. A proof-of-principle experiment is designed and performed at the Linac coherent light source facility. Preliminary data show the change of the interface after shock compression and heating with simultaneous fluorescence spectra for temperature determination. The results provide the first demonstration of using x-ray imaging at an absorption edge as a diagnostic to detect ultrafast phenomena for interface physics in high-energy-density systems., Published by American Institute of Physics, [S.l.]

The intensities within the focal spots of the output of recently developed X-ray sources based on free-electron-laser (FEL) technology are so great that atoms within the focal region can potentially absorb several photons during the few tens of femtosecond X-ray pulse. Furthermore, the duration of the FEL X-ray pulse is comparable to the Auger decay times of inner-shell holes created by the X-rays themselves. We report here how such a scenario can lead to opacity broadening of the fluorescence radiation emitted by the hot, dense plasma, which is created as a result of the X-radiation focussed onto a solid target, and in particular present calculations of the broadening of the Kα emission in a solid-density aluminium target, produced when the FEL photon energy is tuned below the Al K-edge, but is resonant with the Kα transition. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Using rotationally parabolic refractive x-ray lenses made of beryllium, we focushard x-ray free-electron laser pulses of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) down to aspot size in the 100 nm range. We demonstrated efficient nanofocusing and characterizedthe nanofocused wave field by ptychographic imaging [A. Schropp, et al., Sci. Rep. 3, 1633(2013)] in the case of monochromatic LCLS pulses produced by a crystal monochromator thatdecreases the LCLS bandwidth down to ∆E/E = 1.4 · 10 −4 . The full spectrum of LCLSpulses generated by self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), however, fluctuates and hasa typical bandwidth of a few per mille (∆E/E ≈ 2 · 10 −3 ). Due to the dispersion in the lensmaterial, a polychromatic nanobeam generated by refractive x-ray lenses is affected by chromaticaberration. After reviewing the chromaticity of refractive x-ray lenses, we discuss the influenceof increased bandwidth on the quality of a nanofocused SASE pulse.

We present a novel method for cross sectional imaging with nanometer resolution which is referred to as XUV coherence tomography (XCT). XCT uses extreme ultra violet light (XUV), e.g., from high harmonic generation (HHG)

During the last years, scanning coherent x-ray microscopy, also called ptychography, has revolutionized nanobeamcharacterization at third generation x-ray sources. The method yields the complete information on the complex valued, nanofocused wave field with high spatial resolution. In an experiment carried out at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) we successfully applied the method to an attenuated nanofocused XFEL beam with a size of 180(h) × 150(v)nm 2 (FWHM) in horizontal (h) and vertical direction (v), respectively. It was created by a set of 20 beryllium compound refractive lenses (Be-CRLs). By using a fast detector (CSPAD) to record the diffraction patterns and a fast implementation of the phase retrieval code running on a graphics processing unit (GPU), the applicability of the method as a real-time XFEL nanobeam diagnostic is highlighted.

A hard x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) provides an x-ray source with an extraordinary high peak-brilliance, a time structure with extremely short pulses and with a large degree of coherence, opening the door to new scientific fields. Many XFEL experiments require the x-ray beam to be focused to nanometer dimensions or, at least, benefit from such a focused beam. A detailed knowledge about the illuminating beam helps to interpret the measurements or is even inevitable to make full use of the focused beam. In this paper we report on focusing an XFEL beam to a transverse size of 125nm and how we applied ptychographic imaging to measure the complex wavefield in the focal plane in terms of phase and amplitude. Propagating the wavefield back and forth we are able to reconstruct the full caustic of the beam, revealing aberrations of the nano-focusing optic. By this method we not only obtain the averaged illumination but also the wavefield of individual XFEL pulses.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a well-established method to retrieve three-dimensional, cross-sectional images of biological samples in a non-invasive way using near-infrared radiation. The axial resolution of OCT is in the order of the coherence length lc ∝ λ02/ΔλFWHM which depends on the central wavelength λ0 and the spectral width (FWHM) ΔλFWHM of a light source. OCT with broadband visible and near-infrared sources typically reaches axial (depth) resolutions in the order of a few micrometers [1]. The new method presented here takes advantage of the fact that the coherence length and therefore the axial resolution of OCT can be significantly reduced if broadband XUV and SXR radiation is used. The broadness of the usable XUV spectrum is limited by absorption edges of the sample materials. For instance, the silicon transmission window (30-99 eV) corresponds to a coherence length and therefore a possible axial resolution of about 12 nm, thus suggesting applications for semiconductor inspection. In the water window at 280-530 eV a coherence length as short as 3 nm can be achieved and highlights possible applications of XCT for life sciences.

The emergence of hard X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) enables new insights into many fields of science. These new sources provide short, highly intense, and coherent X-ray pulses. In a variety of scientific applications these pulses need to be strongly focused. In this article, we demonstrate focusing of hard X-ray FEL pulses to 125 nm using refractive x-ray optics. For a quantitative analysis of most experiments, the wave field or at least the intensity distribution illuminating the sample is needed. We report on the full characterization of a nanofocused XFEL beam by ptychographic imaging, giving access to the complex wave field in the nanofocus. From these data, we obtain the full caustic of the beam, identify the aberrations of the optic, and determine the wave field for individual pulses. This information is for example crucial for high-resolution imaging, creating matter in extreme conditions, and nonlinear x-ray optics.

We report on the absolute sensitivity calibration of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectrometer system that is frequently employed to study emission from short-pulse laser experiments. The XUV spectrometer, consisting of a toroidal mirror and a transmission grating, was characterized at a synchrotron source in respect of the ratio of the detected to the incident photon flux at photon energies ranging from 15.5 eV to 99 eV. The absolute calibration allows the determination of the XUV photon number emitted by laser-based XUV sources, e.g., high-harmonic generation from plasma surfaces or in gaseous media. We have demonstrated high-harmonic generation in gases and plasma surfaces providing 2.3 μW and μJ per harmonic using the respective generation mechanisms.

It is characterized in a proof of-principle experiment using synchrotron radiation, where the temporal coherence is measured to be 13 fs. The curvature of the thin-film beam splitter membrane is derived from the observed fringe pattern. The applicability of this Michelson interferometer at intense free-electron lasers is investigated,particularly with respect to radiation damage. This study highlights the potential role of such Michelson interferometers in solid density plasma investigations using, for instance, extreme soft x-ray free electron lasers. The combination of powerful optical lasers and an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) provides unique capabilities to study the transient behaviour of matter in extreme conditions. The high energy density science instrument (HED instrument) at the European XFEL will provide the experimental platform on which an unique x-ray source can be combined with various types of high-power optical lasers. In this paper, we highlight selected scientific examples together with the associated x-ray techniques, with particular emphasis on femtosecond (fs)-timescale pump–probe experiments. Subsequently, we present the current design status of the HED instrument, outlining how the experiments could be performed. First user experiments will start at the beginning of 2018, after which various optical lasers will be commissioned and made available to the international scientific community.

The matter in extreme conditions end station at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a new tool enabling accurate pump-probe measurements for studying the physical properties of matter in the high-energy density (HED) physics regime. This instrument combines the world's brightest x-ray source, the LCLS x-ray beam, with high-power lasers consisting of two nanosecond Nd:glass laser beams and one short-pulse Ti:sapphire laser. These lasers produce short-lived states of matter with high pressures, high temperatures or high densities with properties that are important for applications in nuclear fusion research, laboratory astrophysics and the development of intense radiation sources. In the first experiments, we have performed highly accurate x-ray diffraction and x-ray Thomson scattering measurements on shock-compressed matter resolving the transition from compressed solid matter to a co-existence regime and into the warm dense matter state. These complex charged-particle systems are dominated by strong correlations and quantum effects. They exist in planetary interiors and laboratory experiments, e.g., during high-power laser interactions with solids or the compression phase of inertial confinement fusion implosions. Applying record peak brightness x-rays resolves the ionic interactions at atomic (Angstrom) scale lengths and measure the static structure factor, which is a key quantity for determining equation of state data and important transport coefficients. Simultaneously, spectrally resolved measurements of plasmon features provide dynamic structure factor information that yield temperature and density with unprecedented precision at micron-scale resolution in dynamic compression experiments. These studies have demonstrated our ability to measure fundamental thermodynamic properties that determine the state of matter in the HED physics regime.

We report on the extension of Optical Coherence Tomography using extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray radiation and demonstrate an axial resolution of nanometers.

Studies of warm dense matter (WDM) is an emerging and challenging field that is at the border of condensed matter physics and plasma physics. WDM is created in laboratory in the interactions of intense laser (or particle) beams with solid-density matter. With a laser pulse focused to diameters of a few micrometers, gradients of the generated-plasma parameters and ultra-intense induced electric and magnetic fields are expected to be of a similar scale and, thus, measurements with high spatial resolution are desired. Because of the high density, only short-wavelength radiation may escape the interior of the target, thus, the inner-shell x-ray emission, e.g., K_ is an important instrument to yield valuable information on such plasmas. Furthermore, intensity and shape of inner-shell lines depend on properties of both the thermal (or "bulk") and suprathermal ("fast" or "hot") electron distributions.

A compact and light weight soft X-ray spectrograph covering 5−35 nm and employing a toroidal mirror and a variable line space reflection grating has been newly developed. Particular emphasis has been placed on achieving a large collection solid angle (1.9 × 10−3 sr) and a high efficiency of the components in order to enable Thomson Scattering plasma diagnostics which has a small total cross section (6.65 × 10−25 cm2). The instrument achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of 5 with a 13.5 nm source which isotropically emits 2.5 × 105 photons. A resolution λ/Δλ = 330 was measured at 21 nm and the dispersion was calibrated. The instrument is housed inside a DN 100 CF ultra high vacuum manipulator (43 × 46 × 47 cm3) which allows positioning relative to the source within ±5 mm and ±50 mm in X,Y and Z direction, respectively. It can be used with or without entrance pinhole and is equipped with a motorized grating, a filter wheel with five filters, and a shutter. Altogether, these features make the spectrograph a versatile instrument which can be employed in a variety of physics applications such as line and bremsstrahlung spectroscopy or Thomson scattering.

A linear accelerator based source of coherent radiation, FLASH (Free-electron LASer in Hamburg) provides ultra-intense femtosecond radiation pulses at wavelengths from the extreme ultraviolet (XUV; lambda< 100nm) to the soft X-ray (SXR; lambda

We present the attempt to diagnose electron temperature and density of a plasma via Thomson Scattering in the Warm Dense Matter Regimew using soft x-ray Free Electron Laser radiation. A preliminary Self Thomson Scattering experiment has already been conducted. In a current pump-probe experiment, together with an optical heating laser, we will record the temporal evolution of the plasma achieving a resolution of approximately 250fs.

The first soft X-ray free-electron laser has recently been put into operation at DESY in Hamburg. Tunable soft X-ray coherent radiation can be generated at the FLASH (Free-electron LASer in Hamburg; formerly known as VUV FEL or TTF2 FEL). In the interaction experiments reported here, the laser system provided ~ 25-fs, ~ 10-μ J pulses of 32-nm radiation. We irradiated thin (500 nm) layers of poly (methyl methacrylate) – PMMA deposited on a silicon substrate by single, focused FLASH pulses. The pulse energy was adjusted using a gas attenuator.

The ablation of solids by high energy femtosecond pulses from an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free electron laser has been investigated using picosecond optical imaging. The time-resolved measurements are supplemented by an analysis of the permanent structural surface modifications. Compared with femtosecond optical excitation, distinct differences in the material response are found which are attributed to the increased penetration depth of the XUV radiation and the absence of any absorption nonlinearities.

Recent experiments performed at the Matter in Extreme Conditions end station of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) have demonstrated the first spectrally resolved measurements of plasmons from isochorically heated aluminum. The experiments have been performed using a seeded 8-keV x-ray laser beam as a pump and probe to both volumetrically heat and scatter x-rays from aluminum. Collective x-ray Thomson scattering spectra show a well-resolved plasmon feature that is down-shifted in energy by 19 eV. In addition, Mbar shock pressures from laser-compressed aluminum foils using velocity interferometer system for any reflector have been measured. The combination of experiments fully demonstrates the possibility to perform warm dense matter studies at the LCLS with unprecedented accuracy and precision.

The integrated x-ray reflectivity of Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate (KAP) and Rubidium Hydrogen Phthalate (RAP) crystals is studied at a photon energy of (1740±14) eV using a double-crystal setup. The absolute measured reflectivities are in < 5% agreement with the values predicted by the dynamic diffraction theory for perfect crystals when absorption is included. Within 4% experimental error margins, specimen that were exposed to ambient conditions over many years show identical reflectivity as specimen that were cleaved just before the measurement. No differences are observed between cleaving off a 10 μm surface layer and splitting the entire crystal bulk of 2 mm thickness. We conclude that at 1.7 keV photon energy the penetration depth of ~ 1 μm is large compared to a potentially deteriorated surface layer of a few 10 nm.

A key feature of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation from free-electron lasers (FELs) is its spatial and temporal coherence. We measured the spatio-temporal coherence properties of monochromatized FEL pulses at 13.5 nm using a Michelson interferometer. A temporal coherence time of (59±8) fs has been determined, which is in good agreement with the spectral bandwidth given by the monochromator. Moreover, the spatial coherence in vertical direction amounts to about 15% of the beam diameter and about 12% in horizontal direction. The feasibility of measuring spatio-temporal coherence properties of XUV FEL radiation using interferometric techniques advances machine operation and experimental studies significantly.

Suggested is a tomography-like method for studying properties of solid-density plasmas with cylindrical symmetry, such as formed in the interaction of high-power lasers with planar targets. The method is based on simultaneous observation of the target x-ray fluorescence at different angles. It can be applied for validation of existing hypotheses and lately for reconstruction of the plasma properties with three-dimensional resolution. The latter becomes straightforward if the resonance x-ray self-absorption is negligible. The utility of the method is demonstrated by examples.
