The Turkish Journal of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation, established in 1972, is 50 years old now. The number of citations of the journal and the interest of national and international researchers are high. This success has been achieved by the editorial boards who have contributed to the journal since its establishment and the writers who have contributed to its development, and this success will continue to increase. With an increasing number of Iranian journals indexed in global citation databases such as the Web of Science (WoS), it is important to identify to what extent these journals are "internationalized" and if the international composition of these journals influences their quality. To ascertain this, a total of 38 Iranian journals covered in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 2013 was sampled. The internationalization of Iranian journals is considered in terms of: (a) direct contributions in terms of foreign authors' articles published in Iran, (b) indirect contribution in terms of citations from foreign authors' documents to articles published in Iranian journals, and (c) editorial board composition in the field drawn internationally from foreign institutions. Findings revealed that (a) foreign researchers contributed 34.8% of papers in Iranian WoS-indexed journals, (b) a total of 30.6% of citations to Iranian WoS-indexed journals were received from foreign papers or Iranian internationally collaborative papers, and (c) foreign researchers occupied 33.6% of the editorial board membership in Iranian journals. The study found that only two Iranian journals in environmental sciences and chemistry have Impact Factors (IFs) above the median of the journals in the disciplinary category areas in which they are classified in JCR (general medicine, applied mathematics, civil engineering, environmental sciences, chemistry, polymer science, agriculture, and agronomy). Additionally, eight Iranian journals have been placed in the first and second quartile (top 50%) of journals of the same field in the JCR. This article presents an editorial in which the authors discuss the current status and quality of the journal "Revista de Psicología del Deporte." They comment on the increase in the number of editorial members and reviewers and highlight the addition of the journal to various bibliographical indices. The basic indicators of a researcher's productivity and impact are still the number of publications and their citation counts. These metrics are clear, straightforward, and easy to obtain. When a ranking of scholars is needed, for instance in grant, award, or promotion procedures, their use is the fastest and cheapest way of prioritizing some scientists over others. However, due to their nature, there is a danger of oversimplifying scientific achievements. Therefore, many other indicators have been proposed including the usage of the PageRank algorithm known for the ranking of webpages and its modifications suited to citation networks. Nevertheless, this recursive method is computationally expensive and even if it has the advantage of favouring prestige over popularity, its application should be well justified, particularly when compared to the standard citation counts. In this study, we analyze three large datasets of computer science papers in the categories of artificial intelligence, software engineering, and theory and methods and apply 12 different ranking methods to the citation networks of authors. We compare the resulting rankings with self-compiled lists of outstanding researchers selected as frequent editorial board members of prestigious journals in the field and conclude that there is no evidence of PageRank-based methods outperforming simple citation counts. This article reports findings on the scholarly productivity of editorial boards and guest reviewers for selected social work journals. This is the first study to analyze the scholarly productivity of those who serve as guest reviewers for social work journals. Scholarly productivity was defined by the number of citation counts and articles published by editorial board members and guest reviewers for the years 1987 through 1990. As reported in prior studies, many editorial board members appeared to have modest levels of scholarly productivity as defined by citation counts and numbers of articles published. Similar findings are reported for guest reviewers. The researchers conclude that these findings are notable and have serious implications for the academic and professional credibility of social work. One way to measure the contribution of a journal to a discipline is to compare the number of citations made to that journal in subsequent papers published in its own and related disciplines [6]. Similarly, the number of citations made to articles published in a marketing journal would provide an objective measurement of the journal's use by the scholarly community. This article, based on a general-purpose citation indexing system, illustrates the extent of cross-referencing to the AMA's two journals, the Journal of Marketing and the Journal of Marketing Research. The most important application of the CASPER program is to assist marketing scholars and practitioners in coping with the information explosion. The marketing community, business firms, research organizations, and educational institutions need to review their journal subscription policies with regard to how well their collections are serving their needs [2]. If a marketing library cannot be complete, then it must be selective [8]. Therefore, it becomes essential to develop a means of identifying journals which are most useful to researchers and practitioners. Also, it would be helpful to journal editors and editorial boards to know how well their publication is serving the marketing community. The CASPER approach is not an alternative to readership surveys or other means of evaluating journals, but a method for examining one dimension of a professional journal's impact. It does not provide feedback on the acceptance rate or implementation experiences of marketing concepts by practitioners [8]. This study analyses the thematic and conceptual structure of the Spanish scientific production published in Emerging Sources Citation Index (Web of Science) journals. In this way, the aim is to identify the closest links between concepts and terms based on the co-occurrence of keywords used by the authors of the papers analysed, and also to point out the theoretical foundations that exist in the discipline through the co-citation relationships of articles in the bibliography of the documents in the sample. Finally, these results were compared with those obtained from the analysis of Spanish scientific production in Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). To achieve these objectives, a network analysis of the co-occurrence of keywords and co-citation of references in articles published in Communication journals between 2015 and 2021 in ESCI (N = 3,559) and SSCI (N = 1,738) with at least one author linked to a Spanish institution was carried out. The results point to similar structural cohesion values and to a thematic and methodological similarity between both sets observed. There is a marked tendency towards quantitative studies on new technologies. While in SSCI there is an almost absolute dominance of Journalism studies, in ESCI there is a greater diversity of other disciplines such as Audiovisual Communication or Advertising. In this paper, we engage with the rising importance of journal ranking lists. We explore the pressure these place on marketing academics and the politics of knowledge production, stressing academic game-playing, careerism, and paradigmatic homogeneity. We appreciate that scholars are disciplined by these lists, their line managers, and reaffirm list power through their own patterns of self-management. Nonetheless, marketing academics should avoid making the naïve assumption that the appearance of a paper in a highly rated journal necessarily serves as a proxy for ‘quality’. Publication in a particular outlet does not transform the ultimate contribution being made in any substantive fashion. We provide an extensive critique of the function and impact of journal lists. However, it is also recognised that these are very important for members of the marketing community. As such, we explain our reasons for contesting the recent regrading of theJournal of Marketing Management(JMM) by a prominent journal list and underline the changes that have been made to theJournalsince the beginning of the current editorial term. Finally, the support of prominent scholars among our thought community for the policies being implemented is highlighted and we underscore the rigour of contributions to theJournal, the review process, the rising citations, downloads and truly global readership of theJMM. Objective: To conduct a bibliometric analysis of Letters to the Editor published on the Zika virus from 1952-2018. Methods: A PubMed search was conducted using the terms (Zika OR ZIKV). Results were limited to 1952-2018 and Publication Type = Letter. Results were exported to EndNote, and the full text of each Letter examined. Each Letter was assigned to one of five categories: Reader Response, Author Reply, Observation, Case Report, or Research. Additional study parameters included number of authors, number of references, use of graphics, and funding. Citation reports were generated for each category and the entire dataset, producing lists sorted by Times Cited. Results: Of 499 Letters, only 15 (3.0%) were published before 2016. In 2016, at the height of the Zika virus epidemic in the Americas, 244 (48.9%) Letters were published, dropping to 145 (29.1%) in 2017 and 95 (19.0%) in 2018. Letters included 149 (29.9%) Reader Responses, 56 (11.2%) Author Replies, 112 (22.4%) Observations, 70 (14.0%) Case Reports, and 112 (22.4%) Research. The Letters were written by 1-35 authors; 369 (74.0%) Letters had 1-5 authors, and 130 (26.0%) had 6 or more. The Letters cited 0-63 references, with an average of 7.0 per Letter. Graphics appeared in 192 (38.5%) Letters, and 77 (15.4%) Letters reported funding. An interesting anomaly was the 104 (20.8%) Letters authored or co-authored by 1 individual. Why do some articles become building blocks for future scholars, whereas others remain unnoticed? The authors aim to answer this question by contrasting, synthesizing, and simultaneously testing three scientometric perspectives—universalism, social constructivism, and presentation—on the influence of article and author characteristics on article citations. They study all articles published in a sample of five major journals in marketing from 1990 to 2002 that are central to the discipline. They count the number of citations each of these articles has received and regress this count on an extensive set of characteristics of the article (i.e., article quality, article domain, title length, the use of attention grabbers, and expositional clarity) and the author (i.e., author visibility and author personal promotion). They find that the number of citations an article in the marketing discipline receives depends more on “what is said” (quality and domain) and “who says it” (author visibility and personal promotion) than on “how it is said” (title length, the use of attention grabbers, and expositional clarity). The insights gleaned from this analysis contribute to the marketing literature and are relevant to scientific stakeholders, such as the management of scientific journals and individual academic scholars, as they strive to maximize citations. They are also relevant to marketing practitioners; they inform practitioners on characteristics of the academic journals in marketing and their relevance to decisions they face. Conversely, the insights also raise challenges regarding how to make journals accessible and relevant to marketing practitioners: (1) Authors visible to academics are not necessarily visible to practitioners; (2) the readability of an article may hurt academic credibility and impact, but it may be instrumental in influencing practitioners; and (3) it remains questionable whether articles that academics assess to be of high quality are also managerially relevant. This article examines the influence of citation impact on scholarship. Citation analysis allows authors to determine how often their work has been cited by others. It has become a performance metric for scholars of the influence and relevance of their work. However, the authors contends there is very little research to understand citation rates. They conclude that the pressure from journals and universities for prestige is the key element driving citation rates. Increased information technology is expected to continue this trend into the future.

The article discusses the impact and role both special issue and regular issue articles have in management research and publication. There has been a trend in recent years to reserve publication space for special interests and topics that are of interest to specific researchers. Nevertheless, the articles that are published in a journal have a great deal of influence over the development of scientists and scientific fields. Special articles will have an impact on citations and focus of study which will change the course of management research over time. Caution should be taken when setting aside space for such issues so that the repercussions can be considered.

Much has been said about the rise, or 'renaissance', of African economic history. What has received far less attention is who is producing this research. Using a complete dataset of articles in the top four economic history journals, I document the rise in African economic history in the last two decades. I show that although there has indeed been an increase in papers on Africa, it has included little work by Africans. I then attempt to explain why this is so, and motivate why this should matter. The good news is that, mostly owing to efforts by the academic community, more is being done to encourage African inclusion. Introduction. This paper investigates the impact that indigenous library and information research has made on the literature and scholarly outputs of the profession. Method. Searches were made in four major databases for papers on indigenous library and information issues. Crosschecks of the library-focused journals in the information and library sciences section of the Journal Citation Reports were conducted, and the major journals from New Zealand, Australia, and North America were scanned to ensure that all items were captured. Analysis. Search results were downloaded and analysed for their relevance to this research, the number of citations received and where it had been published. The full article was checked for items assessed as being of marginal or no interest for the research to confirm their status. Results. The investigation demonstrated that despite indigenous issues having a high profile within the professions in Australia, New Zealand and North America, this is not reflected within the literature. This is particularly evident in highest-ranking publications. Conclusion. The number of research articles that are published on indigenous library and information management issues will continue to be very low until there is an increase in indigenous researchers and faculty members with specialist skills. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review studies on ranking in finance journals, which have grown substantially in recent decades. Design/methodology/approach – This paper depicts the trend and development of ranking studies in finance area, describes the regional work and lists the studies which focus on specific journal. This paper discusses some important and possible issues of ranking studies in finance in the future and makes some conclusions. Findings – First, the authors find that the assessing method has changed from counting number to citation-based method. Second, the authors sort the ranking studies which focus on the research and publication quality based on regional area. Finally, in specific journal ranking studies, the authors can find how a journal reputation has changed, better or worse. Research into tourism phenomena is regarded as a multidisciplinary quest, but to date no work has endeavored to quantify or characterize the extent to which various scholarly disciplines and research fields inform our scholarly discourse. The purpose of this analysis was to assess the multidisciplinary character of tourism research between 1980 and 2010. Previous efforts to analyze the use of the literature from other disciplines have been significantly limited. In this study, we sought to address this need by analyzing a sample comprising nearly 3,000 citations from tourism research articles published in a range of tourism journals stratified by journal ranking and time period. The author examined the speed of research dissemination by determining the time elapsed from publication to first citation for 617 articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education (JRME). Google Scholar was used to create a unique data set of 6,930 references originating from journals in the arts, education, music, and other fields. An original computer script linked the journal citations to individual articles and calculated the elapsed time from publication to first citation in journals dedicated to music and other disciplines. Kaplan-Meier estimators determined the cumulative failure function and probability of a first citation by year. Failure plots revealed citations to the articles originated more quickly from journals in music than from other fields, highlighting the importance of the JRME to music scholars and gradual influence on other fields. Cumulative first-citation proportions from music journals reached 50% in 4 years and 75% in 8 years. Cox proportional-hazards regression revealed multiauthored studies were cited more quickly after publication than single-author studies, and citation speed changed under different editorships. This study reinforces the importance of JRME to the dissemination of research results throughout the music profession and highlights a need to connect music research with other disciplines. WE USED BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS TO evaluate the citations associated with publications by trainees in the Fogarty International Center's International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development program. Papers published between 2004 and 2008 were identified for analysis. The outcome measures were total citations, h-index, and i-10. A total of 328 manuscripts were identified, with a yearly average of 66 publications and 363 citations. The median number of citations per paper is 3 (IQR Q1-Q3:6). 12.6% (n = 53) of papers were cited over 10 times and the h-index is 22, indicating that 22 papers had been cited at least 22 times. The data indicate that trainees have been productive and contributed to the scholarly literature. Future studies to benchmark this performance with other bioethics education programs are required to make interpretation of citation analysis more meaningful. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses what types of articles that can contribute to the impact factor of the "Journal of Advanced Nursing." The impact factor is defined as a measure of journal performance in terms of citation to the mainstream papers in the journal. An irony to the impact factor is attributed to the strict datelines over which it is calculated. It is concluded that widely read journals do not necessarily have high impact factors.

Background Inaccurate references and citations cause confusion, distrust in the accuracy of a report, waste of time and unnecessary financial charges for libraries, information centres and researchers. Objectives The aim of the study was to establish the accuracy of article references in PhD theses from the Tehran and Tabriz Universities of Medical Sciences and their compliance with the Vancouver style. Methods We analysed 357 article references in the Tehran and 347 in the Tabriz. Six bibliographic elements were assessed: authors' names, article title, journal title, publication year, volume and page range. Referencing errors were divided into major and minor. Results Sixty two percent of references in the Tehran and 53% of those in the Tabriz were erroneous. In total, 164 references in the Tehran and 136 in the Tabriz were complete without error. Of 357 reference articles in the Tehran, 34 (9.8%) were in complete accordance with the Vancouver style, compared with none in the Tabriz. Accuracy of referencing did not differ significantly between the two groups, but compliance with the Vancouver style was significantly better in the Tehran. Conclusions The accuracy of referencing was not satisfactory in both groups, and students need to gain adequate instruction in appropriate referencing methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For a journal manager, boosting a journal's impact factor is an important objective. The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal is cited in a given period. The dynamics of impact factors are caused by the interplay of several concepts, such as seniority of authors and reviewers, journal policies, online availability of journals and quality of contributions. This paper's objective is to discuss three strategies to sustainably improve both a journal's impact factor and its underlying resources. To this end, a journal's assets and resources are captured in a structural simulation model, which is used for strategy experiments. The paper offers three insights: It provides a dynamic hypothesis about the causal structures underlying a journal impact factor; it highlights the fact that the levels and growth rates of the crucial resources, authors and reviewers, must be developed in dynamic correspondence. Finally, developing the stock of high-quality reviewers requires time and resources but is more stable than the stock of authors and, hence, has a higher potential for guiding the journal into a regime of sustainable development. Scholarly impact is studied frequently and used to make consequential decisions (e.g., hiring, tenure, promotion, research support, professional honors), and therefore it is important to measure it accurately. Developments in information technology and statistical methods provide promising new metrics to complement traditional information sources (e.g., peer reviews). The introduction of Hirsch's (2005) h index—the largest number h such that at least h articles are cited h times each, or the length of the largest square in a citations × articles array—sparked an explosion in research on the measurement of scholarly impact. We evaluate 22 metrics, including conventional measures, the h index, and many variations on the h theme. Our criteria encompass conceptual, empirical, and practical issues: ease of understanding, accuracy of calculation, effects on incentives, influence of extreme scores, and validity. Although the number of publications fares well on several criteria, the most attractive measures include h, several variations that credit citations outside the h square, and two variations that control for career stage. Additional data suggest that adjustments for self-citations or shared authorship probably would not improve these measures much, if at all. As one of the four premier journals in vocational psychology, the Journal of Career Development (JCD) has published over 830 articles over the past three decades. This study examined the performance of JCD through a citation analysis and provided evaluative data for scholars publishing in the field of vocation psychology. Articles published by JCD between 1986 and 2007 were analyzed. Additional data pertaining JCD’s performance were also collected through the Journal Citation Reports. The analyses revealed a strong and growing impact of articles published by JCD on researchers and professionals. Specifically, results provided (a) the frequency and trends of JCD’s citations overtime, (b) the journals where JCD’s articles were most often cited, (c) the most frequently cited JCD’s articles, (d) JCD’s impact data in applied psychology, and (e) JCD’s citation information among the other three vocational psychology journals. The article presents general guidelines for preparation of the Flora of the Pan-Himalayas (FLPH) as of May 2011. The natural geographic unit of the Pan-Himalayas covers Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. Also included are specific guidelines for contributors to the writing of the Flora, wherein the treatments of plant groups and format of the Flora, synonymy, and citations of literature for species and genus are discussed.

It contains a critique of Thomson Scientifics 'Journal Impact Factor' as well as an integrated discussion of general strategic guidelines and specific strategic suggestions accounting for the special paradigmatic position of heterodox economics. The author reflects on the pressure faced by science scholars in publishing researches in science education journals and other implications concerning the publications. He argues that scholars respond to pressure by regularly publishing their works which creates contradictions among scholars. He also notes the importance of h-index in lessening the complexity of scholarly productivity and the indications of excess publishing in science education and its effects to the quality of the journals.

An addendum to the journal is presented which examines the literature of environmental and occupational health between 1961 and 1974. It is stated that the literature in the said time frame is not included in the "Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health" 90th Anniversary Supplement in 2009 due to incomplete coverage in the citation databases. The top five highly-cited articles in the period include "Health behavior, illness behavior, and sick role behavior," by S. V. Kasl and S. Cobb.

At a top psychology journal, Psychological Science (PS), submissions peak during the summer months. We tested whether this seasonal submission bias decreases the likelihood of a paper being accepted in that period. Month of submission data was obtained for all 575 publications in PS for the period 2003–2006. Whereas submissions to PS were higher in the summer, there was no evidence that most accepted publications were originally submitted in the summer. Thus, contributors submit to PS when the likelihood of acceptance is the lowest – creating their own entrance barrier. A similar seasonal pattern was not identified for Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, another top psychology journal. Using the Web of Knowledge database, we further assessed whether overcoming the seasonal entrance barrier influences the number of citations a paper receives in subsequent years. We discuss the possibility that the different rejections policies in the two journals, employing desk rejections or not, may explain this discrepancy, and explore a range of alternative hypotheses. The article discusses and measures the effect of the peer review process on research citations and to compare the research impact of refereed and working papers. One hundred one research articles published in "Information Research: An International Electronic Journal," from the years 1998-2002 were used. The related literature on the topic of the peer review process is explored. Citation statistics are given of the research publications, of refereed papers, and of working papers. It was found that the process of peer review has a significant effect on the research impact of articles regarding the number of citations.

We use a threshold citation approach to measure the influence of articles, journals, institutions and researchers in accounting research. The article examines the ranking of institutions in economic research based on the influence of research works produced by their staff or faculty members, using a threshold citation approach. According to the article, the citation-based approach considers research quality as the ranking criterion, and it completely relies on the citation data from the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). Bringing together personal insights from the author's familiarity with both the English and Chinese language epidemiological literature and results from a survey on the use of citations of non-English peer reviewed materials across a sample of epidemiology and public health journals, this commentary discusses the different ways authors cite non-English articles in different English language journals and the different methods used by journals to handle non-Latin scripts (e.g. transliteration). Publication in quality journals has become a major indicator of research performance in UK universities. This paper investigates the notion of 'quality journal' and finds dizzying circularity in its definitions. Actually, what a quality journal is does not really matter: agreement that there are such things matters very much indeed. As so often happens with indicators of performance, the indicator has become the target. So, the challenge is to publish in quality journals, and the challenge rewards gamesmanship. Vested interests have become particularly skilful at the game, and at exercising the winners' prerogative of changing the rules. All but forgotten in the desperation to win the game is publication as a means of communicating research findings for the public benefit. The paper examines the situation in management studies, but the problem is much more widespread.
