Search

We report the discovery of a giant Lya emitter (LAE) with a Spitzer/IRAC counterpart near the reionization epoch at z=6.595. The giant LAE is found from the extensive 1 deg^2 Subaru narrow-band survey for z=6.6 LAEs in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field, and subsequently identified by deep spectroscopy of Keck/DEIMOS and Magellan/IMACS. Among our 207 LAE candidates, this LAE is not only the brightest narrow-band object with L(Lya) = 3.9+/-0.2 x 10^43 erg/s in our survey volume of 10^6 Mpc^3, but also a spatially extended Lya nebula with the largest isophotal area whose major axis is at least ~3''. This object is more likely to be a large Lya nebula with a size of >~17 kpc than to be a strongly-lensed galaxy by a foreground object. Our Keck spectrum with medium-high spectral and spatial resolutions suggests that the velocity width is v(FWHM)=251+/-21 km/s, and that the line-center velocity changes by ~60 km/s in a 10-kpc range. The stellar mass and star-formation rate are estimated to be 0.9-5.0 x 10^10 Mo and >34 Mo/yr, respectively, from the combination of deep optical to infrared images of Subaru, UKIDSS-Ultra Deep Survey, and Spitzer/IRAC. Although the nature of this object is not yet clearly understood, this could be an important object for studying cooling clouds accreting onto a massive halo, or forming-massive galaxies with significant outflows contributing to cosmic reionization and metal enrichment of inter-galactic medium., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the HAT-P-1 planetary system. Spectra obtained during three transits exhibit the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, allowing us to measure the angle between the sky projections of the stellar spin axis and orbit normal, \lambda = 3.7 +/- 2.1 degrees. The small value of \lambda for this and other systems suggests that the dominant planet migration mechanism preserves spin-orbit alignment. Using two new transit light curves, we refine the transit ephemeris and reduce the uncertainty in the orbital period by an order of magnitude. We find a upper limit on the orbital eccentricity of 0.067, with 99% confidence, by combining our new radial-velocity measurements with those obtained previously., Comment: 28 total pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, ApJ Accepted

We present the results of deep near-infrared imaging observations of the z=3.1 proto-cluster region in the SSA22a field taken by MOIRCS mounted on the Subaru Telescope. We observed a 21.7 arcmin^2 field to the depths of J=24.5, H=24.3, and K=23.9 (5 sigma). We examine the distribution of the K-selected galaxies at z~3 by using the simple color cut for distant red galaxies (DRGs) as well as the photometric-redshift selection technique. The marginal density excess of DRGs and the photo-z selected objects are found around the two most luminous Ly alpha blobs (LABs). We investigate the correlation between the K-selected objects and the LABs, and find that several galaxies with stellar mass M_* = 10^9-10^11 M_solar exist in vicinity of LABs, especially around the two most luminous ones. We also find that 7 of the 8 LABs in the field have plausible K_s-band counterparts and the sum of the stellar mass possibly associated with LABs correlates with the luminosity and surface brightness of them, which implies that the origin of Ly alpha emission may be closely correlated with their stellar mass or their previous star formation phenomena., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ Vol.60, No.4

We present a new technique for detecting scattered starlight from transiting, close-orbiting extrasolar giant planets (CEGPs) that has the virtues of simplicity, robustness, linearity, and model-independence. Given a series of stellar spectra obtained over various phases of the planetary orbit, the goal is to measure the strength of the component scattered by the planet relative to the component coming directly from the star. We use two complementary strategies, both of which rely on the predictable Doppler shifts of both components and on combining the results from many spectral lines and many exposures. In the first strategy, we identify segments of the stellar spectrum that are free of direct absorption lines and add them after Doppler-shifting into the planetary frame. In the second strategy, we compare the distribution of equivalent-width ratios of the scattered and direct components. Both strategies are calibrated with a ``null test'' in which scrambled Doppler shifts are applied to the spectral segments. As an illustrative test case, we apply our technique to spectra of HD 209458 taken when the planet was near opposition (with orbital phases ranging from 11 to 34$\arcdeg$, where 0$\arcdeg$ is at opposition), finding that the planet-to-star flux ratio is $(1.4 \pm 2.9)\times10^{-4}$ in the wavelength range 554$-$681 nm. This corresponds to a geometric albedo of $0.8 \pm 1.6$, assuming the phase function of a Lambert sphere. We present luminosity functions (LFs) and various properties of Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=3.1, 3.7, and 5.7, in a 1 deg^2 sky of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) Field. We obtain a photometric sample of 858 LAE candidates based on deep Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging data, and a spectroscopic sample of 84 confirmed LAEs from Subaru/FOCAS and VLT/VIMOS spectroscopy in a survey volume of ~10^6 Mpc^3 with a limiting Lya luminosity of ~3x10^42 erg/s. We derive the LFs of Lya and UV-continuum (~1500 \AA) for each redshift, taking into account the statistical error and the field-to-field variation. We find that the apparent Lya LF shows no significant evolution between z=3.1 and 5.7 within factors of 1.8 and 2.7 in L* and phi*, respectively. On the other hand, the UV LF of LAEs increases from z=3.1 to 5.7, indicating that galaxies with Lya emission are more common at earlier epochs. We identify six LAEs with AGN activities from our spectra combined with VLA, Spitzer, and XMM-Newton data. Among the photometrically selected LAEs at z=3.1 and 3.7, only ~1 % show AGN activities, while the brightest LAEs with logL(Lya) >~ 43.4-43.6 erg/s appear to always host AGNs. Our LAEs are bluer in UV-continuum color than dropout galaxies, suggesting lower extinction and/or younger stellar populations. Our stacking analyses provide upper limits to the radio luminosity and the f(HeII)/f(Lya) line fraction, and constrain the hidden star formation (+low-luminosity AGN) and the primordial population in LAEs., Comment: 75 pages, 27 figures; ApJS in press. We report a measurement of the Rossiter--McLaughlin effect in the transiting extrasolar planetary system TrES-1, via simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations with the Subaru and MAGNUM telescopes. By modeling the radial velocity anomaly that was observed during a transit, we determine the sky-projected angle between the stellar spin axis and the planetary orbital axis to be $\lambda = 30 \pm 21$ [deg]. This is the third case for which $\lambda$ has been measured in a transiting exoplanetary system, and the first demonstration that such measurements are possible for relatively faint host stars ($V \sim 12$, as compared to $V \sim 8$ for the other systems). We also derive a time of mid-transit, constraints on the eccentricity of the TrES-1b orbit ($e = 0.048 \pm 0.025$), and upper limits on the mass of the Trojan companions ($\lesssim$14 $M_{\oplus}$) at the 3$\sigma$ level., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We present the first measurement of clustering properties of low mass galaxies with a stellar mass down to M_*~10^9 Msun at 11.3 show a large bias of b~7.2+-1.3 on scales up to \theta~100" or 3.1 comoving Mpc, while blue galaxies with 0.5~10^{10} Msun, we estimate a correlation length and bias to be r_0~4.5 h^{-1} Mpc and b=1.9-3.5, which are much larger than those of low mass (M_*~10^9-10^{10} Msun) galaxies. The comparison of our measurements with analytic CDM models constrains the properties of hosting dark halos, and indicates that the low mass galaxies would be progenitors of galaxies with a typical luminosity of L<~L_* in the local Universe. The blue galaxies in low mass samples are more strongly clustered in more massive halos with higher occupation numbers than low mass red galaxies. We use very deep near-infrared imaging data taken with Multi-Object InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru Telescope to investigate the number counts of Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs). We have observed a 4x7 arcmin^2 field in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N), and our data reach J=24.6 and K=23.2 (5sigma, Vega magnitude). The surface density of DRGs selected by J-K>2.3 is 2.35+-0.31 arcmin^-2 at K<22 and 3.54+-0.38 arcmin^-2 at K<23, respectively. These values are consistent with those in the GOODS-South and FIRES. Our deep and wide data suggest that the number counts of DRGs turn over at K~22, and the surface density of the faint DRGs with K>22 is smaller than that expected from the number counts at the brighter magnitude. The result indicates that while there are many bright galaxies at 222 suggest that the mass-dependent color distribution, where most of low-mass galaxies are blue while more massive galaxies tend to have redder colors, had already been established at that epoch., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report a discovery of proto-cluster candidates around high redshift radio galaxies at z~2.5 on the basis of clear statistical excess of colour-selected galaxies around them seen in the deep near-infrared imaging data obtained with CISCO on Subaru Telescope. We have observed six targets, all at similar redshifts at z~2.5, and our data reach to J=23.5, H=22.6 and K=21.8 (5 sigma) and cover a 1.6' x 1.6' field centered on each radio galaxy. We apply colour cuts in JHKs in order to exclusively search for galaxies located at high redshifts, z>2. Over the magnitude range of 19.52.3 by a factor of two around the combined radio galaxies fields compared to those found in the general field of GOODS South. The excess of galaxies around the radio galaxies fields becomes more than factor of three around 19.5

We use deep multi-band optical and near-infrared data for four general fields, GOODS-South, HDF North/South, and IRAC UDF in GOODS-North to investigate the evolution of the observed rest-frame U-V color of field galaxies as a function of the stellar mass. In these four fields, the U-V color distributions of the galaxies at each mass and redshift interval are very similar. At 0.3 3x10^10M_solar) evolves more strongly at a high redshift. Such mass-dependent color distribution and its evolution indicate that galaxies with a larger stellar mass appear to have shorter star-formation timescales, and on an average, they form the larger fraction of their stars in the earlier epoch., Comment: 7 pages, 3 color figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the results of a prototype photometric search for transiting extrasolar planets using Subaru Suprime-Cam. Out of about 100,000 stars monitored around the Galactic plane (l=90 degree,b=0 degree), we find that 7,700 (27,000) stars show the photometric precision below 1% (3%) for 60 second exposures which is required to detect extrasolar planets by the transit method. Thus Suprime-Cam has the photometric stability and accuracy required for a transiting planet survey. During this observing run, we detected three transiting planetary candidates (i'-band magnitude around 18.5) which exhibit a single full transit-like light curve with a fractional depth of <5%. While future photometric and/or spectroscopic follow-ups remain to be done, the estimated parameters for the three systems are consistent with planetary companions around main-sequence stars. We present the results of an intermediate resolution (~2 angstrom) spectroscopy of a sample of 37 candidate Lyman alpha blobs and emitters at redshift z=3.1 using the DEIMOS spectrograph on the 10 m Keck telescope. The emission lines are detected for all the 37 objects and have variety in their line profiles. The Lyman alpha velocity widths (FWHM) of the 28 objects with higher quality spectra, measured by fitting a single Gaussian profile, are in the range of 150 - 1700 km/s and correlate with the Lyman alpha spatial extents. All the 12 Lyman alpha blobs (>16 arcsec^2) have large velocity widths of > 500 km/s. While there are several possible physical interpretations of the Lyman alpha velocity widths (motion of gravitationally-bound gas clouds, inflows, merging of clumps, or outflows from superwinds), the large velocity widths of the Lyman alpha blobs suggest that they are the sites of massive galaxy formation. If we assume gravitationally-bound gas clouds, the dynamical masses of the Lyman alpha blobs are estimated to be ~10^12 - 10^13 Msun. Even for the case of outflows, the outflow velocities are likely to be the same order of the rotation velocities as inferred from the observational evidence for local starburst galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

The gamma-ray burst (GRB) 050904 at z = 6.3 provides the first opportunity of probing the intergalactic medium (IGM) by GRBs at the epoch of the reionization. Here we present a spectral modeling analysis of the optical afterglow spectrum taken by the Subaru Telescope, aiming to constrain the reionization history. The spectrum shows a clear damping wing at wavelengths redward of the Lyman break, and the wing shape can be fit either by a damped Ly alpha system with a column density of log (N_HI/cm^{-2}) ~ 21.6 at a redshift close to the detected metal absorption lines (z_metal = 6.295), or by almost neutral IGM extending to a slightly higher redshift of z_{IGM,u} ~ 6.36. In the latter case, the difference from z_metal may be explained by acceleration of metal absorbing shells by the activities of the GRB or its progenitor. However, we exclude this possibility by using the light transmission feature around the Ly beta resonance, leading to a firm upper limit of z_{IGM,u} < 6.314. We then show an evidence that the IGM was largely ionized already at z=6.3, with the best-fit neutral fraction of IGM, x_HI = N_HI/N_H = 0.00, and upper limits of x_HI < 0.17 and 0.60 at 68 and 95% C.L., respectively. This is the first direct and quantitative upper limit on x_HI at z > 6. Various systematic uncertainties are examined, but none of them appears large enough to change this conclusion. To get further information on the reionization, it is important to increase the sample size of z >~ 6 GRBs, in order to find GRBs with low column densities (log N_HI <~ 20) within their host galaxies, and for statistical studies of Ly alpha line emission from host galaxies., Comment: Matches the published version in PASJ. We obtained the number counts and the rest-frame B-band luminosity function of the color-selected old passively-evolving galaxies (OPEGs) at z=1 with very high statistical accuracy using a large and homogeneous sample of about 4000 such objects with z' <25 detected in the area of 1.03 deg^2 in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field. Our selection criteria are defined on the i'-z' and R-z' color-magnitude plane so that OPEGs at z=0.9-1.1 with formation redshift z_f=2-10 are properly sampled. The limiting magnitude corresponds to the luminosity of galaxies with M_*+3 at z=0. We made a pilot redshift observations for 99 OPEG candidates with 19 < z' < 22 and found that at least 78% (73/93) of the entire sample, or 95% (73/77) of these whose redshifts were obtained are indeed lie between z=0.87 and 1.12 and the most of their spectra show the continuum break and strong Ca H and K lines, indicating that these objects are indeed dominated by the old stellar populations. We then compare our results with the luminosity functions of the color- or the morphologically-selected early type galaxies at z=0 taking the evolutionary factor into account and found that the number density of old passive galaxies with sim M_* magnitude at z~1 averaged over the SXDS area is 40-60% of the equivalently red galaxies and 60-85% of the morphologically-selected E/S0 galaxies at z=0 depending on their luminosity evolution. We examine masses of hosting haloes of two photometrically-selected high-z galaxy samples: the old passively-evolving galaxies (OPEGs) and Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) both taken from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS). The large survey area of the SXDS (1sq deg) allows us to measure the angular two-point correlation functions to a wide separation of >10 arcmin with a good statistical quality. We utilize the halo model prescription for estimating characteristic masses of hosting haloes from the measured large-scale clustering amplitudes. It is found that the hosting halo mass positively correlates with the luminosity of galaxies. Then, adopting the extended Press-Schechter model (EPS), we compute the predictions for the mass evolution of the hosting haloes in the framework of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology in order to make an evolutionary link between the two galaxy samples at different redshifts and to identify their present-day descendants by letting their haloes evolve forward in time. It is found that, in the view of the mass evolution of hosting haloes in the CDM model, bright LBGs are consistent with being the progenitor of the OPEGs, whereas it is less likely that the LBG population, as a whole, have evolved into the OPEG population. It is also found that the present-day descendants of both the bright LBGs and OPEGs are likely to be located in massive systems such as groups of galaxies or clusters of galaxies. Finally, we estimate the hosting halo mass of local early-type galaxy samples from the 2dF and SDSS based on the halo model and it turns out that their expected characteristic mass of hosting haloes is in good agreement with the EPS predictions for the descendant's mass of both the bright LBGs and OPEGs., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS. We discuss the environmental dependence of galaxy evolution based on deep panoramic imaging of two distant clusters taken with Suprime-Cam as part of the PISCES project. By combining with the SDSS data as a local counterpart for comparison, we construct a large sample of galaxies that spans wide ranges in environment, time, and stellar mass (or luminosity). We find that colours of galaxies, especially those of faint galaxies ($M_V>M_V^*+1$), change from blue to red at a break density as we go to denser regions. Based on local and global densities of galaxies, we classify three environments: field, groups, and clusters. We show that the cluster colour-magnitude relation is already built at $z=0.83$. In contrast to this, the bright-end of the field colour-magnitude relation has been vigorously built all the way down to the present-day and the build-up at the faint-end has not started yet. A possible interpretation of these results is that galaxies evolve in the 'down-sizing' fashion. That is, massive galaxies complete their star formation first and the truncation of star formation is propagated to smaller objects as time progresses. This trend is likely to depend on environment since the build-up of the colour-magnitude relation is delayed in lower-density environments. Therefore, we may suggest that the evolution of galaxies took place earliest in massive galaxies and in high density regions, and it is delayed in less massive galaxies and in lower density regions., Comment: 23pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have searched for absorption in several common atomic species due to the atmosphere or exosphere of the transiting extrasolar planet HD 209458b, using high precision optical spectra obtained with the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS). Previously we reported an upper limit on H alpha absorption of 0.1% (3 sigma) within a 5.1\AA band. Using the same procedure, we now report upper limits on absorption due to the optical transitions of Na D, Li, H alpha, H beta, H gamma, Fe, and Ca. The 3 sigma upper limit for each transition is approximately 1% within a 0.3\AA band (the core of the line), and a few tenths of a per cent within a 2\AA band (the full line width). The wide-band results are close to the expected limit due to photon-counting (Poisson) statistics, although in the narrow-band case we have encountered unexplained systematic errors at a few times the Poisson level. These results are consistent with all previously reported detections and upper limits, but are significantly more sensitive., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Using the Subaru very deep K'-band imaging and HST WFPC2/NICMOS archival data of the Hubble Deep Field North, we investigate the evolution of the stellar mass, color, morphology of galaxies to z ~ 3. We mainly examine the rest-frame U-V color distribution of galaxies as a function of stellar mass. At 0.32, it is seen that more massive galaxies tend to have redder U-V color over the range of 10^9-10^10 M_solar. These results suggests that the star formation history of galaxies depends on their stellar mass very much. The low-mass population is likely to have relatively long star formation timescale. At the stellar mass larger than ~5x10^9 M_solar, there must be some mechanisms which suppress the star formation in galaxies at 0

There is evidence that the transiting planet HD 209458b has a large exosphere of neutral hydrogen, based on a 15% decrement in Lyman-alpha flux that was observed by Vidal-Madjar et al. during transits. Here we report upper limits on H-alpha absorption by the exosphere. The results are based on optical spectra of the parent star obtained with the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph. Comparison of the spectra taken inside and outside of transit reveals no exospheric H-alpha signal greater than 0.1% within a 5.1A band (chosen to have the same Delta_lambda/lambda as the 15% Ly-alpha absorption). The corresponding limit on the column density of n=2 neutral hydrogen is N_2 <~ 10^9 cm^{-2}. This limit constrains proposed models involving a hot (~10^4 K) and hydrodynamically escaping exosphere., Comment: To appear in PASJ [9 pages, 5 figures]. We summarize the multiwavelength properties of X-ray sources detected in the 80 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Groth-Westphal Strip. We find 23 XMM-Newton sources within the WFPC2 fields. Ten spectroscopic redshifts are available from the DEEP and CFRS projects and 4 of these show broad Mg II emission (type 1 AGNs). Two of those without any broad lines, nevertheless, have [NeV] emission which is an unambiguous signature of AGN activity, one of which is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 and the other a type 2 AGN. We have made near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations using the Subaru OHS/CISCO spectrometer for five of the X-ray sources for which we found no indication of an AGN activity in the optical spectrum. We have detected H-alpha+[NII] emission in four of them. A broad H-alpha component and/or a large [NII]/H-alpha ratio is seen, suggestive of AGN activity. Nineteen sources have been detected in the Ks band and four of these are extremely red objects (I814-Ks>4). The optical counterparts for the majority of the X-ray sources are bulge-dominated with colors consistent with evolving elliptical galaxies, with starburst/AGN contamination. Assuming that the known local relations among the bulge luminosity,central velocity dispersion, and the mass of the central blackhole hold at about z=1, the AGN bolometric luminosity to Eddington luminosity ratio ranges from 0.3% to 10%. There are three major axes to describe the evolution of galaxies, namely, time (redshift), space (environment) and mass (stellar mass). In this article, one topic each will be presented along these axes. (1) Based on the Subaru wide-field (30') optical imaging of two distant clusters (z=0.55 and 0.83), we show the large scale structures in galaxy distributions on a scale greater than 10Mpc, which serve as an evidence for hierarchical growth of rich clusters of galaxies through assembly of surrounding groups. (2) Based on the deep NIR imaging of high-z clusters at z~1 and 1.5, we show massive galaxies in clusters have assembled most of their mass by z=1.5, which is earlier than the hierarchical model predictions. (3) Based on the Subaru deep and wide optical imaging of Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field, we show a deficit of red and faint galaxies and a lack of blue massive galaxies in the high density regions at z~1, which suggest down-sizing in galaxy formation as apparently opposed to the CDM-based bottom-up scenario., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure, to appear in the Proceedings of the ESO/USM/MPE Workshop on "Multiwavelength Mapping of Galaxy Formation and Evolution"

Results of optical identification of the ASCA Lynx deep survey are presented. Six X-ray sources are detected in the 2-7 keV band using the SIS in a 20'x20' field of view with fluxes larger than ~4x10^{-14} erg s-1 cm-2 in the band. Follow-up optical spectroscopic observations were made, and five out of six sources are identified with AGNs/QSOs at redshifts of 0.5-1.3. We also identify two more additional X-ray sources detected in a soft X-ray band with AGNs/QSOs. It is found that three QSOs identified are located at z~1.3. Two rich clusters and several groups of galaxies are also placed at the same redshift in the surveyed field, and projected separations between the QSOs and the clusters are 3-8 Mpc at the redshift., Comment: 15 pages with 3 figures. We present the results of optical spectroscopic identifications of a bright subsample of 2-10keV hard X-ray selected sources from the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey in the northern sky. The flux limit of the subsample is 3*10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 in the 2-10keV band. All but one of the 87 hard X-ray selected sources are optically identified, with AGNs, 7 clusters of galaxies, and 1 galactic star. It is the largest complete sample of hard X-ray selected AGNs at the bright flux limit. Amounts of absorption to their nuclei are estimated to be hydrogen column densities (N_H) of up to ~3*10^23 cm^-2 from their X-ray spectra. Optical properties of X-ray absorbed AGNs with N_H > 1*10^22 cm^-2 indicate the effects of dust absorption: at redshifts, z<0.6, AGNs without broad H\beta emission lines have significantly larger N_H value than AGNs with broad H\beta emission lines. At z>0.6, the X-ray absorbed AGNs have a large hard X-ray to optical flux ratio (log f2-10keV/fR > +1). However, three X-ray absorbed z>0.6 AGNs show strong broad lines. In combination with hard X-ray selected AGN samples from the ASCA Large Sky Survey, the ASCA Deep Survey in the Lockman Hole and Chandra Deep Field North, the luminosity distributions of absorbed and less-absorbed AGNs are compared., Comment: 56 pages with 14 figures. We present a high resolution spectrum of the quasar, HS1603+3820 (z_em=2.542), observed with the High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) on Subaru Telescope. This quasar, first discovered in the Hamburg/CfA Quasar Survey, has 11 C IV lines at 1.96 < z_abs < 2.55. Our spectrum covers 8 of the 11 C IV lines at z_abs > 2.29 and resolves some of them into multiple narrow components with b < 25 km/s because of the high spectral resolution R=45000, while other lines show broad profiles (b > 65 km/s). We use three properties of C IV lines, specifically, time variability, covering factor, and absorption line profile, to classify them into quasar intrinsic absorption lines (QIALs) and spatially intervening absorption lines (SIALs). The C IV lines at 2.42 < z_abs < 2.45 are classified as QIALs in spite of their large velocity shifts from the quasar. Perhaps they are produced by gas clouds ejected from the quasar with the velocity of v_ej = 8000 km/s -- 10000 km/s. On the other hand, three C IV lines at 2.48 < z_abs < 2.55 are classified as SIALs, which suggests there exist intervening absorbers near the quasar. We, however, cannot rule out QIALs for the two lines at z_abs ~ 2.54 and 2.55, because their velocity shifts, 430 km/s blueward and 950 km/s redward of the quasar, are very small. The C IV line at z_abs ~ 2.48 consists of many narrow components, and has also corresponding low-ionization metal lines (Al II, Si II, and Fe II). The velocity distribution of these low-ionization ions is concentrated at the center of the system compared to that of high-ionization C IV ion. We report the first measurement of genus curves for the two-dimensional mass map in the neighborhood of rich, X-ray luminous galaxy cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83, reconstructed from weak lensing data obtained by Suprime-Cam on the prime focus of 8.2m Subaru telescope. We find that the genus curve measured in the whole survey field deviates from that expected from a random Gaussian field. We show that this non-Gaussianity is induced by the rich cluster in this region, and that the genus curve for the region without the cluster is consistent with the prediction for a random Gaussian field. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the genus statistics to examine the non-Gaussianity due to the large scale structures and to probe the statistical properties of the large scale clustering., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present the results of a survey for emission-line objects based on optical intermediate-band ($\lambda_{\rm c}$ = 5736 \AA ~ and $\Delta\lambda$ = 280 \AA) and broad-band ($B$, $V$, $R$, and $i^\prime$) observations of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope with the Subaru Prime Focus Camera, Suprime-Cam. All the data were obtained during the guaranteed time observations of the Suprime-Cam instrument. The intermediate-band image covered a sky area with 10\minpoint62 $\times 12\minpoint40 \approx 132$ arcmin$^2$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (Ouchi et al.). Using this image, we have found 23 emission-line sources whose observed emission-line equivalent widths are greater than 250 \AA. Their optical multicolor properties indicate that six emission-line sources are Ly$\alpha$ emitters at $z \approx$ 3.7 ($\Delta z \approx 0.22$). They are either intense starburst galaxies or active galactic nuclei like quasars at $z \approx$ 3.7. Two more emission-line sources may also be Ly$\alpha$ emitters at $z \approx$ 3.7 although their multicolor properties are marginal. Among the remaining 15 emission-line objects, eight objects appear strong emission-line galaxies at lower redshift; e.g., [O {\sc ii}] $\lambda$3727 emitters at $z \approx 0.54$, H$\beta$ at $z \approx 0.18$, or [O {\sc iii}]$\lambda$5007 emitters at $z \approx 0.15$. The remaining seven objects are unclassified because they are too faint to be detected in broad-band images. We discuss observational properties of these strong emission-line sources. We present the first results of the Chandra and optical follow-up observations of hard X-ray sources detected in the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey (AMSS). Optical identifications are made for five objects. Three of them show either weak or absent optical narrow emission lines and are at low redshift ~0.06. One of them is a broad line object at z=0.910 and one is a z=0.460 object with only narrow lines. All the narrow line objects show strong evidence for absorption in their X-ray spectra. Their line ratios are consistent with a Seyfert II/LINER identification as are the line widths. The three low redshift objects have the colors of normal galaxies and apparently the light is dominated by stars. This could be due to the extinction of the underlying nuclear continuum by the same matter that absorbs X-rays and/or due to the dilution of the central source by starlight. These results suggest that X-ray sources that appear as ``normal'' galaxies in optical and near-IR bands significantly contribute to the hard X-ray background. We present the results of the deep NIR imaging observations using the Subaru telescope. At the Hubble Deep Field North, we obtained the new and deepest K'-band image (10 hours) to study the rest-frame optical morphology of galaxies at z > 3 and the stellar mass distribution of galaxies at 2 < z < 4.5. We also study the rest-frame optical properties of the 'building blocks' in the field of 53W002 and overall color distribution there. We then combined these data to compare the color and magnitude distribution in these two fields. We discuss the properties of galaxies around the radio galaxy 3C 324 at z=1.2 based on BVRIK' multi-band imaging data. We have applied a photometric-redshift technique to objects in the 3C 324 field, and identified 35 objects as plausible cluster members. We have found that red and luminous members are concentrated in a small region enclosed by a circle of 40" radius (0.33 Mpc at z=1.2 for \Omega_0=0.3, \lambda_0=0.7, H_0=70km/s/Mpc cosmology) from the 3C 324 galaxy. The 3C 324 cluster is probably much more compact in size compared with the local clusters. We constructed a K'-band luminosity function of the cluster members and fit a Schechter function, and found the characteristic magnitude to be K*_{AB}=20.2+-0.6. This value is consistent with the extrapolation of the pure passive evolution seen for z<1 clusters. We have identified eight bright galaxies which form a red color-magnitude sequence. The slope of the sequence is consistent with the passive evolution model down to K'_{AB}<22; we also found that there is no clear age variation in these bright red galaxies. However, seven out of these eight galaxies exhibit a significant excess in the rest UV light with respect to the passive evolution model. This may suggest that the massive early-type galaxies in this high-redshift cluster are still forming stars to some extent. We have confirmed a truncation of the color-magnitude sequence at K'_{AB}\sim22; faint passively-evolving galaxies may not yet be present in this cluster at z\sim1.2. The overall color distribution of the cluster members, selected by the photometric redshift technique, is found to be very broad. Using the HST WFPC2/NICMOS archival data of the Hubble Deep Field North, we construct the nearly complete sample of the Mv <-20 (~L*+1) galaxies to z=2, and investigate when the Hubble sequence appeared, namely, the evolution of the morphology, colors, and the comoving number density of the sample. Even if taking into account of the uncertainty of the photometric redshift technique, the number density of relatively bright bulge-dominated galaxies in the HDF-N decrease significantly at z>1, and their rest-frame U-V color distribution is wide-spread over 0.50.3) galaxies at z>1.5, while the significant fraction of these red disk-dominated or irregular galaxies exists at z<1.5. These results suggest that the significant evolution of the Hubble sequence which is seen in the present Universe occurs at 1

We report on a wide-area (48' x 9') imaging survey of faint galaxies in R and I bands toward the 1338+27 field where an unusual concentration of five QSOs at z\sim1.1, embedded in a larger-scale clustering of 23 QSOs, is known to exist. Using a quite homogeneous galaxy catalog with a detection completeness limit of I~23.5, we detect a significant clustering signature of faint red galaxies with I > 21 and R-I > 1.2 over a scale extending to ~20h^{-1}_{50} Mpc. Close examination of the color-magnitude diagram, the luminosity function, and the angular correlation function indeed suggests that those galaxies are located at z~1.1 and trace the underlying large-scale structure at that epoch, together with the group of 5 QSOs. Since the whole extent of the cluster of 23 QSOs (~70h^{-1}_{50} Mpc) is roughly similar to the local ``Great Wall'', the area may contain a high-redshift counterpart of superclusters in the local universe., Comment: 21 pages including 7 EPS color figures; accepted for publication for the Astrophysical Journal (2001)

We have obtained high-resolution K'-band images of the powerful z=1.206 radio galaxy 3C 324 with the Subaru telescope under seeing conditions of 0.3--0.4 arcsec. We clearly resolved the galaxy and directly compared it to the optical images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The host galaxy of 3C 324 is revealed to be a moderately luminous elliptical galaxy with a smooth light profile. The effective radius of the galaxy, as determined by profile fitting, is 1.3+-0.1 arcsec (1.2 kpc), which is significantly smaller than the value of 2.2 arcsec, published in Best et al. (1998, MNRAS, 292, 758). The peak of the K'-band light coincides with the position of the radio core, which implies that the powerful AGN lies at the nucleus of the host galaxy. The peak also coincides with the gap in the optical knotty structures which may be a dust lane hiding the UV-optical emission of the AGN from our line of sight; it is very likely that we are seeing the obscuring structure almost edge-on. We clearly detected the `aligned component' in the K'-band image by subtracting a model elliptical galaxy from the observed image. The red R_F702W-K color of the outer region of the galaxy avoiding the aligned component indicates that the near infrared light of the host galaxy is dominated by an old stellar population., Comment: 21 pages (10 figures), accepted for publication in PASJ

We investigate the $K$-band luminosity distribution of galaxies in the region of clusters at $z\sim1.2$ near to the radio galaxy 3C 324. The imaging data were obtained during the commissioning period of the Subaru telescope. There is a significant excess of the surface number density of the galaxies with $K =$ 17--20 mag in the region within $\sim$ 40'' from 3C 324. At this bright end, the measured luminosity distribution shows a drop, which can be represented by the exponential cut off of the Schechter-function formula; the best-fitted value of the characteristic magnitude, $K^{*}$, is $\sim 18.4\pm0.8$. This measurement follows the evolutionary trend of the $K^*$ of the rich clusters observed at an intermediate redshift, which is consistent with passive evolution models with a formation redshift $z_f \gtsim 2$. At $K \gtsim 20$ mag, however, the excess of the galaxy surface density in the region of the clusters decreases abruptly, which may imply that the luminosity function of the cluster galaxies has a negative slope at the faint end. This may imply strong luminosity segregation between the inner and outer parts of the clusters, or some deficit of faint galaxies in the cluster central region of the cluster., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We have investigated the optical and near-infrared colors of K'-selected galaxies in clusters at z ~ 1.2 near to the radio galaxy 3C 324 using images obtained with the Subaru telescope and archival HST data. The distribution of colors of the galaxies in the cluster region is found to be fairly broad, and it may imply significant scatter in their star-formation histories, although the effect of contamination of field galaxies is uncertain. The red sequence of galaxies whose R-K colors are consistent with passive evolution models for old galaxies is found to be truncated at K' ~ 20 mag, and there are few fainter galaxies with similar red colors in the cluster region. We find that the bulge-dominated galaxies selected by quantitative morphological classification form a broad sequence in the color-magnitude diagram, whose slope is much steeper than that expected from metallicity variations within a passively evolving coeval galaxy population. We argue that the observed color-magnitude sequence can be explained by metallicity and age variations, and the fainter galaxies with K' > 20 mag may be 1-2 Gyr younger than the brighter galaxies. Some spatial segregation of the color and K'-band luminosity is seen in the sky distribution; the redder and the brighter objects tend to be located near 3C 324., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We investigated the color and morphology of optically selected galaxies in the region of clusters at z $\sim$ 1.2 near to the radio galaxy 3C 324 using archived data taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. The faint galaxies selected at the HST F702W band that contribute to the surface-density excess of the region have wide ranges of color, size, and morphology, which are not likely to be due to contamination by foreground galaxies. Namely, the rest-frame ultraviolet emission properties of the galaxies in the clusters are not very homogeneous; various amounts of star-formation activity may occur in a significant fraction of them. Although our analysis is purely statistical, we find that typical star-forming galaxies with blue colors have a relatively late-type morphology compared to the red quiescent population in the systems., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We previously reported a significant clustering of red galaxies (R-K=3.5--6) around the radio-loud quasar B2 1335+28 at z=1.086. In this paper, we establish the existence of a rich cluster at the quasar redshift, and study the properties of the cluster galaxies through further detailed analysis of the photometric data. The color distribution of the galaxies in the cluster is quite broad and the fraction of blue galaxies (\sim 70%) is much larger than in intermediate-redshift clusters. Using evolutionary synthesis models, we show that this color distribution can be explained by galaxies with various amounts of star-formation activity mixed with the old stellar populations. Notably, there are about a dozen galaxies which show very red optical-NIR colors but also show significant UV excess with respect to passive-evolution models. They can be interpreted as old early-type galaxies with a small amount of star formation. The fact that the UV-excess red galaxies are more abundant than the quiescent red ones suggests that a large fraction of old galaxies in this cluster are still forming stars to some extent. However, a sequence of quiescent red galaxies is clearly identified on the R-K versus K color-magnitude (C-M) diagram. The slope and zero point of their C-M relation appear to be consistent with those expected for the precursors of the C-M relation of present-day cluster ellipticals when observed at z=1.1. We estimate the Abell richness class of the cluster to be R \sim 1. New X-ray data presented here place an upper limit of L_x < 2 10^{44} erg s^{-1} for the cluster luminosity. We investigate expected sub-mm emission and dust properties of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The SCUBA Deep Survey (Hughes et al., 1998) provides an upper limit of the 850 micron flux densities of the LBGs. With this constraint, we argue that a typical ultra-violet to far-infrared spectral shape of the high-redshift LBGs is rather close to a template spectrum of low-reddening starburst galaxies in the local universe but different from that of heavily dust-enshrouded ultra-luminous far-infrared galaxies like Arp220. We also evaluate the lower-limit temperature of dust in LBGs assuming single- and two-component modified black-body spectrum. To estimate the total amount of energy re-emitted in FIR wavelength, we take two different approaches; model fitting of the UV spectra of LBGs and an empirical method using the relationship between UV spectral shape and UV/FIR flux ratio observed for local starburst galaxies. Both methods give lower-limit temperature of the LBGs as around 40 K, which is higher than the typical dust temperature of local optical- and infrared-selected galaxies. This result is also supported by the comparison of the expected sub-mm flux of the LBGs with the cosmic FIR background radiation. We present results of ASCA deep exposure observations of the hardest X-ray source discovered in the ASCA Large Sky Survey (LSS) project, designated as AX J131501+3141. We extract its accurate X-ray spectrum, taking account of the contamination from a nearby soft source (AX J131502+3142), separated only by 1'. AX J131501+3141 exhibits a large absorption of NH = (6 +4 -2)x 10^22 H/cm^2 with a photon index \Gamma = 1.5 +0.7 -0.6. The 2--10 keV flux was about 5 x 10^-13 erg/s/cm^2 and was time variable by a factor of 30% in 0.5 year. From the highly absorbed X-ray spectrum and the time variability, as well as the results of the optical follow-up observations (Akiyama et al. 1998, astro-ph/9801173), we conclude that AX J131501+3141 is a type 2 Seyfert galaxy. We present H- and K s-bands observations of the LkHα 330 disk with a multi-band detection of the large gap and spiral-like structures. The morphology of the outer disk (r ~ 0."3) at PA = 0°–45° and PA° = 180–290° is likely density wave-induced spirals, and comparison between our observational results and simulations suggests a planet formation. We have also investigated the azimuthal profiles at the ring and the outer-disk regions as well as radial profiles in the directions of the spiral-like structures and semimajor axis. Azimuthal analysis shows a large variety in wavelength and implies that the disk has non-axisymmetric dust distributions. The radial profiles in the major-axis direction (PA = 271°) suggest that the outer region (r ≥ 0."25) may be influenced by shadows of the inner region of the disk. The spiral-like directions (PA = 10° and 230°) show different radial profiles, which suggests that the surfaces of the spiral-like structures are highly flared and/or have different dust properties. Finally, a color map of the disk shows a lack of an outer eastern region in the H-band disk, which may hint at the presence of an inner object that casts a directional shadow onto the disk.

We conducted high-contrast polarimetry observations of T Tau in the H-band, using the High Contrast Instrument for the Subaru Next Generation Adaptive Optics instrument mounted on the Subaru Telescope, revealing structures as near as 0farcs1 from the stars T Tau N and T Tau S. The whole T Tau system is found to be surrounded by nebula-like envelopes, and several outflow-related structures are detected in these envelopes. We analyzed the detailed polarization patterns of the circumstellar structures near each component of this triple young star system and determined constraints on the circumstellar disks and outflow structures. We suggest that the nearly face-on circumstellar disk of T Tau N is no larger than 0".8, or 117 au, in the northwest, based on the existence of a hole in this direction, and no larger than 0".27, or 40 au, in the south. A new structure, "N5," extends to about 0."42, or 59 au, southwest of the star, and is believed to be part of the disk. We suggest that T Tau S is surrounded by a highly inclined circumbinary disk with a radius of about 0."3, or 44 au, with a position angle of about 30°, that is misaligned with the orbit of the T Tau S binary. After analyzing the positions and polarization vector patterns of the outflow-related structures, we suggest that T Tau S should trigger the well-known E–W outflow, and is also likely to be responsible for a southwest precessing outflow "coil" and a possible south outflow.

Large exoplanet surveys have successfully detected thousands of exoplanets to-date. Utilizing these detections and non-detections to constrain our understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems also requires a detailed understanding of the basic properties of their host stars. We have determined the basic stellar properties of F, K and G stars in the Strategic Exploration of Exoplanets and Disks with Subaru (SEEDS) survey from Echelle spectra taken at the Apache Point Observatory's 3.5m telescope. Using ROBOSPECT to extract line equivalent widths and Temperature Gravity microtrubulent Velocity ITerations to calculate the fundamental parameters, we have computed T(sub eff), log(g), v(sub t), [Fe/H], chromospheric activity and the age for our sample. Our methodology was calibrated against previously published results for a portion of our sample. The distribution of [Fe/H] in our sample is consistent with that typical of the Solar neighbourhood. Additionally, we find the ages of most of our sample are less than 500 Myr, but note that we cannot determine robust ages from significantly older stars via chromospheric activity age indicators. The future meta-analysis of the frequency of wide stellar and sub-stellar companions imaged via the SEEDS survey will utilize our results to constrain the occurrence of detected comoving companions with the properties of their host stars.

We present H-band (1.6 micron) scattered light observations of the transitional disk RX J1615.3-3255, located in the approx. 1 Myr old Lupus association. From a polarized intensity image, taken with the HiCIAO instrument of the Subaru Telescope, we deduce the position angle and the inclination angle of the disk. The disk is found to extend out to 68 +/- 12 AU in scattered light and no clear structure is observed. Our inner working angle of 24 AU does not allow us to detect a central decrease in intensity similar to that seen at 30 AU in the 880 m continuum observations. We compare the observations with multiple disk models based on the spectral energy distribution (SED) and submm interferometry and find that an inner rim of the outer disk at 30 AU containing small silicate grains produces a polarized intensity signal which is an order of magnitude larger than observed. We show that a model in which the small dust grains extend smoothly into the cavity found for large grains is closer to the actual H-band observations. A comparison of models with different dust size distributions suggests that the dust in the disk might have undergone significant processing compared to the interstellar medium.

By performing non-masked polarization imaging with Subaru HiCIAO, polarized scattered light from the inner region of the disk around the GGTau A system was successfully detected in the H band, with a spatial resolution of approximately0 07, revealing the complicated inner disk structures around this young binary. This paper reports the observation of an arc-like structure to the north of GG Tau Ab, and part of a circumstellar structure that is noticeable around GG Tau Aa, extending to a distance of approximately 28 au from the primary star. The speckle noise around GG Tau Ab constrains its disk radius to 13 au. Based on the size of the circumbinary ring and the circumstellar disk around GG Tau Aa, these mimajor axis of the binary's orbit is likely to be 62 au. A comparison of the present observations with previous Atacama Large Millimeter Array and near-infrared H2 emission observations suggests that the north arc could be part of a large streamer flowing from the circumbinary ring to sustain the circumstellar disks. According to the previous studies,the circumstellar disk around GG Tau Aa has enough mass and can sustain itself for a duration sufficient for planet formation; thus, our study indicates that planets can form within close (separation 100 au) young binary systems.

Dust trapping accelerates the coagulation of dust particles, and, thus, it represents an initial step toward the formation of planetesimals. We report H-band (1.6 microns) linear polarimetric observations and 0.87 mm interferometric continuum observations toward a transitional disk around LkH(alpha) 330. As a result, a pair of spiral arms were detected in the H-band emission, and an asymmetric (potentially arm-like) structure was detected in the 0.87 mm continuum emission. We discuss the origin of the spiral arm and the asymmetric structure and suggest that a massive unseen planet is the most plausible explanation. The possibility of dust trapping and grain growth causing the asymmetric structure was also investigated through the opacity index (beta) by plotting the observed spectral energy distribution slope between 0.87 mm from our Submillimeter Array observation and1.3 mm from literature. The results imply that grains are indistinguishable from interstellar medium-like dust in the east side (beta = 2.0 +/- 0.5) but are much smaller in the west side beta = 0.7+0.5 -0.4, indicating differential dust size distribution between the two sides of the disk. Combining the results of near-infrared and submillimeter observations, we conjecture that the spiral arms exist at the upper surface and an asymmetric structure resides in the disk interior. Future observations at centimeter wavelengths and differential polarization imaging in other bands (Y-K) with extreme AO imagers are required to understand how large dust grains form and to further explore the dust distribution in the disk.

We find a new substellar companion to the Pleiades member star, Pleiades HII 3441, using the Subaru telescope with adaptive optics. The discovery is made as part of the high-contrast imaging survey to search for planetary-mass and substellar companions in the Pleiades and young moving groups. The companion has a projected separation of 0". 49+/-0". 02 (66+/-2 au) and a mass of 68+/-5M(sub J) based on three observations in the J-, H-, and K(sub s)-bands. The spectral type is estimated to be M7 (approx. 2700 K), and thus no methane absorption is detected in the H band. Our Pleiades observations result in the detection of two substellar companions including one previously reported among 20 observed Pleiades stars, and indicate that the fraction of substellar companions in the Pleiades is about 10.0+26.1 −8.8 %. This is consistent with multiplicity studies of both the Pleiades stars and other open clusters.

To reveal the structures of a transition disk around a young stellar object in Lupus, Sz 91, we have performed aperture synthesis 345 GHz continuum and CO(3--2) observations with the Submillimeter Array (approximately 1" - 3" resolution), and high-resolution imaging of polarized intensity at the K(sub s) -band by using the HiCIAO instrument on the Subaru Telescope (0.25" resolution). Our observations successfully resolved the inner and outer radii of the dust disk to be 65 AU and 170 AU, respectively, which indicates that Sz 91 is a transition disk source with one of the largest known inner holes. The model fitting analysis of the spectral energy distribution reveals an H 2 mass of 2.4×10(exp −3) M(solar mass) in the cold (T less than 30 K) outer part at 65 less than r less than 170 AU by assuming a canonical gas-to-dust mass ratio of 100, although a small amount (greater than 3×10(exp −9) M(solar mass)) of hot (T approximately 180 K) dust possibly remains inside the inner hole of the disk. The structure of the hot component could be interpreted as either an unresolved self-luminous companion body (not directly detected in our observations) or a narrow ring inside the inner hole. Significant CO(3--2) emission with a velocity gradient along the major axis of the dust disk is concentrated on the Sz 91 position, suggesting a rotating gas disk with a radius of 420 AU. The Sz 91 disk is possibly a rare disk in an evolutionary stage immediately after the formation of protoplanets because of the large inner hole and the lower disk mass than other transition disks studied thus far.
