The article presents a call by the Association for the Study of Modern Italy (ASMI) for research papers on all aspects of consumption in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries including those employing economic, social, cultural, theoretical, and political approaches. These papers will be used for the 2006 ASMI Conference. Selected revised conference papers will be published in a collected volume of essays or as a journal theme issue.

Information about several papers discussed at the XIV International Forum of the International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies, which took place in Rome, Italy on May 23 and May 27 in 2006. A round-table discussion was chaired by Sergio Caruso, which focused on the theme "Contact and exchange between psychoanalytic groups and institutions.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study four cases of the adoption of co-production and compare them according to the type of user involvement, contextual factors and the organizational structure. Design/methodology/approach: In total, 30 interviews were conducted in four mental health organizations which are implementing co-production in the North of Italy. Interviews were conducted with clinicians, nurses, patients and family members. The data collected was triangulated with further sources and official documents of organizations. The results have been compared by means of a validated international framework (IAP2) regarding the contextual factors and the level of co-production adopted. Findings: The adoption of co-production in the four cases differs by the activities implemented and how organizations involve informal actors. It seems to be influenced by the contextual factors specific to each organization: power, professionals' opinions and leadership. Organizations whose practitioners and leaders are willing to distribute their power and value informal actors' opinions seem to facilitate the systematic involvement of users. Overall, the results highlight the importance of considering contextual factors when evaluating and describing co-production activities. Drawing on data from the contemporary Italian knitwear industry, this paper examines putting-out, the domestic system of production, and criticisms of it in traditional theories of economic development as inherently backward and organizationally inefficient compared with large-scale production. I describe the historical putting-out system and its context and distinguish it from modern putting-out by contrasting the features of each. The paper shows that a modernized form of putting-out, composed of interlinked microfirms, is compatible with high living standards and organizational efficiency. The success of the system rests on technological and marketing factors, the presence of cohesive family units, cooperative relationships between business and community actors, and an institutional environment supportive of small, family-run firms. This article focuses on announcement of International Enrico Greppi Award 2004 by the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches (SICS). The award will be granted to the best unpublished original paper, written in English by researchers of any nationality, dealing with the epidemiological, genetic, pathophysiological or therapeutic aspects of headache. The papers must be submitted in six hard copies or in electronic format, in accordance with the editorial instructions of The Journal of Headache and Pain.

Population aging is exacerbating the loss of competences in the workforce and simultaneously young people neither in employment nor in education and training (NEETs) are struggling to be reengaged in employment. These issues, which are deemed priorities for the European policy agenda, could be addressed by triggering active aging dimensions, valuing and exploiting older adult entrepreneurs' knowledge for enhancing youngsters' entrepreneurial attitudes, through mentoring. This paper reports the results of a study based on an intergenerational learning program, carried out in 2018 in Germany, Italy and Slovenia. The study was aimed at developing and testing one training on mentoring addressing 41 older adult entrepreneurs (55 and over), and two intergenerational learning trainings aiming at boosting entrepreneurial competences of 33 NEETs (aged 18–29). The impact of the program on older adult entrepreneurs and NEETs was assessed through a pre and post-evaluation using qualitative and quantitative tools. Findings at country level were treated as national case-studies and then the latter were compared by considering them as a multiple embedded case-study. Results indicated that, to different extent in the study countries, mentors learned and enhanced mentoring competences, e.g. active listening and the capability of orienting, improved well-being and self-esteem, social inclusion and active aging attitude. Moreover, NEETs acquired entrepreneurial and socio-relational competences by benefiting from the full exploitation of mentors' know-how and the trust relationship with them. Companies, trade unions, educational and voluntary organizations should cooperate to adopt intergenerational learning programs as good practices for older adults and NEETs' lifelong learning promotion. Information about the 13th Biennial Conference of the IASPM on July 25-30, 2005 in Rome, Italy is presented. The Korean panel was attended by ten attendees who have been studying East Asia. Shelley Brunt and Jeroen de Kloet presented papers on Asian popular music. The conference was organized into five streams that merged into the common theme of making musical meaning.

Information about several papers discussed at the Seventh Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME 7) held February 9-13, 2011 at Rzeszów in Poland is presented. The papers focus on the mathematics learning and education for children aged 3 to 7. Other issues include the exploratory activity on natural numbers in Grade 2 in Italy and children's written and oral mathematical solutions to arithmetic problems.

This paper seeks to contribute to a more nuanced discourse on vaccination policy. Current polarization between either mandatory and entirely voluntary is misleading, as virtually all immunization programs feature a combination of instruments that comprise mandatory and voluntary elements. We develop this argument by presenting five case studies from the European Union (EU). Using pooled cross-sectional time series data collected at the level of 13 geographical regions, this paper investigates the effects of location dependence and unobserved heterogeneity on founding rates of rural cooperative banks in Italy from 1964 to 1988. Parametric and semiparametric models of organizational founding reveal that the organizational population is internally differentiated and that different segments of the population respond heterogeneously to general processes of legitimation and competition. This study emphasizes the importance of identifying the correct level of analysis at which population-level processes operate and of accounting for unobservable factors related to the cross-sectional structure of organizational populations. The findings demonstrate how an ecological approach that incorporates information on the spatial structure of the population can provide a more detailed understanding of the evolutionary dynamics of organizations. This paper aimed to investigate three issues. First, the validation of the multi-dimensional Servant Leadership Survey (SLS) within the Italian context. Second, to enhance insight into the degree of servant leadership behaviour displayed by Italian leaders in organizational settings. Third, to support the fact that in Italy, too, servant leadership is positively correlated to leadership integrity, organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behaviour while it is negatively correlated to cynicism towards one’s own work. A sample of about 800 adults, males and females, currently employed in profit and non-profit organizations, took part in the study. The factorial structure of SLS found support, and the survey showed satisfactory psychometric properties and reliability. Servant leadership expressed by Italian leaders turned out to be lower than in The Netherlands and in the UK. SLS scores were positively associated with leadership integrity, organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behaviour, and negatively associated for cynicism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a flavour of the content of International Round Table at the Conference on Competencies and Curriculum for IL held in Milan, Italy in March 2007. Design/methodology/approach - A description of the issues, content and speakers of the Round Table is presented in this report. Findings - Various international perspectives were reported at this round table, covering the themes of IL courses, the curriculum, professional competencies, learning by doing, and who is the right teacher for IL, which ended with a lively discussion and thoughts for the future. The article announces the 26 annual European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE) conference held on September 4-7, 199 at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Turin in Italy. Social participation is considered not only an important resource for society, but also an indicator of social capital. Thus, bearing in mind these features, this paper analyses the trend of the associative participation in Italy. The data used come from different international surveys, such as Eurobarometer, ESS and EVS, and also data from the Italian survey Istat ("Aspects of daily life"). Particular attention is paid to people who are more than 50 years old in the SHARE survey. The results confirm previous studies: a reduction of participation in trade union and political party membership, and a stable situation with regard to the participation in voluntary associations. Purpose - With the advance of globalization the competitive chances of industrial districts depends increasingly on their ability to connect to the cognitive circuits of the global economy. This challenge demands the presence of local actors capable of acting as cognitive interfaces between the district context and the global environment. The paper focuses on a specific category of local/global cognitive interfaces, i.e. the institutions that provide knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). The purpose is to explain how institutional KIBS play this role. Design/methodology/approach - The paper develops a detailed analysis of the case of such an institution operating in the chair-manufacturing district of North-East Italy. Based on this case study, a model is proposed for interpreting the role of a local/global cognitive interface that institutional KIBS are able to perform. Findings - The first part of the framework shows the cognitive processes hosted by this type of institution and the connection between such processes and the KIBS's stock of knowledge. The second part of the model considers the interdependent core capabilities that enable a KIBS to act effectively as a local/global cognitive interface. Originality/value - The role that institutions, acting as KIBS, can play in promoting the survival of industrial districts has been discussed in some studies but no model has been proposed as yet to explain how these institutions can play such an important part. Relying on the case of the Senegalese in Italy, the paper addresses the following research challenge: may migrant associations' activities and involvement in co-development projects be conducive to the transnationalization of citizenship? Together with the illustration of the process of diversification of Senegalese associational trajectories, I will discuss the opportunities for co-development but also the difficulties encountered in its implementation in the place of migration and of origin. Those projects sometimes represent an opportunity to improve the social conditions back home together with the inclusion within the local receiving context. However, one witnesses ambivalences concerning this search of enhancement of migrants' status and recognition at both ends of the migration experience. Given the limited number of studies on this topic, the aim of this study is to better understand the characteristics of art restoration firms in Italy, with particular reference to their use of innovative technologies such as laser technology. The paper is supported by a survey conducted in a sample of 100 companies. The factors that have led firms to adopt or resist the adoption of the laser were identified and analysed. The results show that the main determinants of laser adoption are collaborative activities between the firms and universities and specific requests made by public institutions to use this technology. While most of the literature on Internet and politics tends to assess the former's positive contribution to political processes, this paper stresses both positive and negative consequences. Special attention paid to the Italian Global Justice Movement (GJM). The Internet is presented as a double-faced Janus, creating opportunities but also posing new challenges in empowering poor actors. This paper is built on both quantitative and qualitative research: a survey of participants in the demonstration on the Bolkestein directive (Rome, October 2005) and a series of qualitative interviews with those in leadership positions of different organizational sectors of the GJM. While quantitative data allows checking relations among variables concerning the political use of the Internet, qualitative data provides more detailed information on Internet use in the everyday life of the organizations. The article focuses on the efforts European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) to create consensus guidelines for diagnosing and treating patients with digestive neuroendocrine tumors, during its conference in Frascati, Italy in November 2005. Abstract: This paper presents a new method for fissile mass estimation by passive neutron interrogation. The method uses the stochastic transport equation to express the first three central moments (mean, variance and skewness) for the number of detected neutrons within a given time interval in terms of the fissile mass, the (,n) rate and the multiplicity factor. Solving these three equations allows estimation of the fissile mass. As the primary validation of the method, it was implemented for several fissile mass measurements, which were conducted by the Nuclear Security Unit of the Joint Research Center (JRC) in Italy and by the Institute of Isotopes in Hungary. Abstract: Luigi Cremona (1830–1903) is unanimously considered to be the man who laid the foundations of the prestigious Italian school of Algebraic Geometry. In this paper we draw attention to the “Legato Itala Cremona Cozzolino”, which was given to the library of the Mazzini Institute, Genoa, Italy, by Cremona’s daughter, Itala, probably in 1939. This legacy, which contains over 6000 documents, mainly consisting of Cremona’s correspondence with scientific and institutional Italian interlocutors, can help us to understand the connections between the development of Italian mathematics in the second half of the XIX century and the main political issues of Italian history. Abstract: Due to an increased expectation of food products that respect high quality and safety standards, there is a need for the growth of accurate, fast, objective and non-destructive technologies for quality determination of food and agricultural products. For this purpose, a diagnostic system based on laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (LPAS) was developed at ENEA Frascati Molecular Spectroscopy Laboratory (Italy). In the design of the photoacoustic detector, particular emphasis was placed in attaining a high sensitivity in detecting ethylene (ET) down to sub-parts per billion level (minimum detectable concentration 0.2ppb). This was required due to the necessity to monitor and follow up ET production at a single fruit scale. ET is normally synthesised in very low amounts by healthy citrus fruits; however stress conditions such as pathogen attack may induce a substantial increase in the synthesised ET. In the present paper, the comparison between the ET emitted by healthy oranges (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) cv Navel and by Phytophthora citrophthora infested Navel orange fruits are reported. The obtained results show a well evident increase in ET emission from the infested fruit with respect to the healthy one, even 24h after the inoculation with the pathogen; at that time the tissue necrosis was not yet visible, and the fruit was also not yet damaged. The possibility to perform a real time non-destructive detection of ET traces makes the LPAS a powerful tool for monitoring the healthy state of the citrus fruits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organization, in this paper, is considered as a system of symbolic translation regarding the collusive dynamic of context. The organizational activity; outcome oriented, is based on collusive dynamic, historically founding the context. British support for Italian unification in the nineteenth century is well known but little research exists on continued British involvement with Italy after 1860. One of the most remarkable figures of this era was Julie Schwabe, who launched a one‐woman campaign to raise funds to establish schools in Naples. Her first institution closed because of cholera, but in the 1870s she started anew, raising funds in England, France, Germany and Italy in support of what she at times labeled ‘a good international’. The article aims at mapping the stock of social capital in the 103 Italian provinces. It could be considered a replication and an update of Putnam's Making Democracy Work. The paper proposes a careful consideration on the concept of social capital – considered as a collective good – and argues the limits of the sociological metaphor of network, which often misses the double distinction between abscriptive/elective and formal/informal networks. The focus is on the consequences of the deficit of social capital in terms of quality of democracy and economic development. To build the index of the stock of the social capital, the authors use data on electoral turn out (1993-2004), newspapers circulation (2001- 2002), blood giving (2002), voluntary associations (2002), and sports clubs (1999-2001). Empirical findings stress a deep cleavage between Northern provinces and Southern ones, accordingly to Putnam's remarks. Moreover data show that the gap between North and South in terms of social capital stock is as deep as the gap in term of average individual income. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The paper deals with financing the culture in Italy. The public expenses for the culture are shared as expenses of the government, of the regions, of the provinces and of the municipalities. The relationships of the cultural organisations with the public sector are very strong because they belong to the public sector, or they broadly depend on public funds. A specific attention is devoted to other forms of financing, about the role of the entrance fees and the entrances of the game “Lotto”, which subsidy the cultural goods and the Interministerial Committee for the Economic Planning (CIPE) allocations to the depressed areas. We will also be faced up to the examination of other sources of private financing as the sponsorships, the entrances of collateral services about museum visits (coffee and bookstore) and the supply of banking foundations. The fiscal incentives refer directly to the cultural institution or to the external financing of the nonprofit institutions by donations or sponsorships. Finally, the cultural institutions will have always to operate more and more by a strategic vision of financial and managerial field, on the basis of high qualitative standards. The activities and cultural projects will have to be able to attract additional sources of income in addition to the public one; the search of private financial resources is developed in a situation of increasing competition among the institutions, while tools of innovative finance have to be used to satisfy the increasing demand of culture. It is difficult nevertheless to define the possible best method of public–private financing, if you take consideration of the distinctive features of the different institutions and interests of the operators who are involved: artists, cultural institutions, public bureaucracy, besides the economic effects which follow alternative choices. The recent evolution of the institutional, financial and managerial models of the culture in Italy plans a larger integration between public and private sectors for a great involvement of individuals, enterprises and foundations about the financing of the cultural services offer. The article presents a speech by the president of the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group (IPEG) delivered at the 14th Annual Congress for Endosurgery in Children in Venice, Italy from June 1 to 4, 2005. He discusses the achievements of IPEG, history of the organization, safety of laparoscopic colorectal surgery and the centralization of pediatric surgery in Europe.

Due to demographic changes, age diversity is growing in the workplace, creating a potential challenge to social integration. However, who is most affected by working with colleagues of different ages and when is being dissimilar in age from others more likely to hinder organisational identification? Drawing on relational demography and on the social identity approach, we suggest that certain individual and contextual conditions can lead employees to react to greater age dissimilarity by reducing their psychological attachment to the organisation. We propose that negative age stereotypes and perceived age-related treatment affect the salience of age as a social category for employees and threaten their age group identity, thereby creating conditions in which age dissimilarity might hinder organisational identification. We therefore examine the moderating effects of negative age stereotypes and perceived age-related treatment on the relationship between age dissimilarity and organisational identification in a sample of 434 schoolteachers from 16 schools in Italy. Findings show that age dissimilarity per se is not sufficient to hamper employees' identification with the organisation. However, it has detrimental effects when employees hold negative age stereotypes and/or perceive an unfair organisational treatment towards their own age group. Information about several papers discussed at the Sixth Genoa Meeting on Hypertension, Diabetes and Renal Disease held in Genoa, Italy on February 22 to 24, 2007 is presented. The meeting offered information regarding the close association between cardiovascular and renal disease, and aimed at enhancing cardio-renal health education among those who study and manage the broad spectrum of kidney and heart diseases.

The present study draws on the work–family and cross‐national management literature to examine the relationships between Family‐Supportive Organizational Perceptions (FSOP), work–family enrichment, and job burnout across five countries with different cultural backgrounds: Malaysia, New Zealand, France, Italy, and Spain. Using a combined sample of 980 employees, we find support for a partial mediation model in which FSOP is positively associated with work–family enrichment, which in turn is negatively related to job burnout. Given our focus on support, we test the moderating role of the cultural value humane orientation, that is, the extent to which a society values altruism, kindness, and compassion. The five countries in our sample offer variation in their country‐level scores as determined by the GLOBE study (House et al., 2004). We found that individuals from cultures that scored higher in "as is" humane orientation (i.e., scores for actual practices) experienced lower job burnout when FSOP increased. This pattern was reversed when considering "should be" humane orientation (i.e., scores for ideal values).
