The article presents information on the annual general meeting of the Royal Economic Society, scheduled on July 1, 1976. The meeting will take place at the Burlington House in London, England. Measures to keep staff and patients safe (containment) frequently involve coercion. A small proportion of patients is subject to a large proportion of containment use. To reduce the use of containment, we need a better understanding of the circumstances in which it is used and the understandings of patients and staff. Two sweeps were made of all the wards, spread over four hospital sites, in one large London mental health organization to identify patients who had been subject to high levels of containment in the previous two weeks. Data were then extracted from their case notes about their past history, current problem behaviours, and how they were understood by the patients involved and the staff. Nurses and consultant psychiatrists were interviewed to supplement the information from the case records. Twenty-six heterogeneous patients were identified, with many ages, genders, diagnoses, and psychiatric specialities represented. The main problem behaviours giving rise to containment use were violence and self-harm. The roots of the problem behaviours were to be found in severe psychiatric symptoms, cognitive difficulties, personality traits, and the implementation of the internal structure of the ward by staff. Staff's range and depth of understandings was limited and did not include functional analysis, defence mechanisms, specific cognitive assessment, and other potential frameworks. There is a need for more in-depth assessment and understanding of patients' problems, which may lead to additional ways to reduce containment use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which was carried out to gain an insight into the conceptualization of recovery regarding attendees at an international conference organized by the Hearing Voices organization and held in Great Britain in October 2010. The study employed 400 conference attendees and the convenience sampling method was used in the study. It concludes that for some attendees the mental health recovery debate remains.

Purpose -- The third sector has been promoted by progressive English governments as a provider of health and social care services for people with mental health difficulties. This article aims to consider the assumptions that lie behind these polices and reviews the evidence that third sector organisations can be said to have a "unique" role and approach. The challenges and opportunities of the current market-based reforms for the third sector are discussed. Design/methodology/approach -- The article is based on literature reviews of the third sector's role in mental health care and commissioning of third sector organisations. Findings -- The third sector delivers a range of mental health services in England, in particular those related to accommodation, advice, advocacy and employment. Its activity extends into other roles such as campaigning and development of new approaches to care and support. Evidence of the distinctiveness of the sector as a whole is limited, but there are examples of such organisations providing innovative and userled services. Market-based reforms are seen as posing a threat to smaller organisations in particular but personalised approaches (including allocation of individual budgets), outcome-based payments and a need for large-scale service redesign are seen as offering considerable opportunity for expansion. Practical implications -- For the new market to include a strong third sector will require leadership within organisations, a collaborative approach within the sector, and commissioners that understand and engage positively with the sector in all its diversity. Originality/value -- This article draws together the research literature on the third sector's engagement in mental health and the impact of market-based reforms and in doing so provides original value in the fields of mental health and third sector studies. Objective: To investigate the external and internal governance of NHS foundation trusts (FTs), which have increased autonomy, and local members and governors unlike other NHS trusts. Methods: In depth, three-year case studies of four FTs; and analysis of national quantitative data on all FT hospitals and NHS Trust hospitals to give national context. Data included 111 interviews with managers, clinicians, governors and members, and local purchasers; observation of meetings; and analysis of FTs' documents. Results: The four case study FTs were similar to other FTs. They had used their increased autonomy to develop more business-like practices. The FT regulator, Monitor, intervened only when there were reported problems in FT performance. National targets applying to the NHS also had a large effect on FT behaviour. FTs saw themselves as part of the local health economy and tried to maintain good relationships with local organisations. Relationships between governors and the FTs' executives were still developing, and not all governors felt able to hold their FT to account. The skills and experience of staff members and governors were under-used in the new governance structures. Conclusions: It is easier to increase autonomy for public hospitals than to increase local accountability. Hospital managers are likely to be interested in making decisions with less central government control, whilst mechanisms for local accountability are notoriously difficult to design and operate. Further consideration of internal governance of FTs is needed. In a deteriorating financial climate, FTs should be better placed to make savings, due to their more business-like practices. In 2009, the Mental Health Act Commission for England and Wales was closed down and its functions subsumed in separate organisations in the two countries. Its final biennial report, issued that year, focused on coercion and consent. This article uses some aspects of the report to discuss the implications of lawful psychiatric coercion being predicted by social group membership (correlated with race, age and gender). The work of the Commission furnished useful information in this regard, but its framework for data collection could not, and so did not, illuminate a more established picture of the class gradient in mental health problems. With the latter literature in mind, material adversity may explain the racial patterning of psychiatric populations coercively detained. However, normative aspects of risk-taking in the community and in hospital may better predict the findings on age and gender. The article concludes by querying the ameliorative impact of government appointed ‘visitorial’ bodies. Legalism-plus-safeguards is a questionable basis for meaningfully bringing discriminatory powers to book, or for reversing the differential impact of pathogenic social forces. This article examines commitment to the regional development of London as it emerged among individuals and groups interested in urban planning in the early twentieth century. Following a brief account of growth and reform in the capital during the nineteenth century, this article focuses on the development of debates about planning the metropolis in the first two decades of the century, exploring practical initiatives such as the Town Planning Conference held in 1910 and the production of The London Society's Development Plan for Greater London during the years of the First World War. London's associational culture was central in generating and hosting discussions about the future of the city during this period and the article provides an indication of the extent of overlapping memberships between groups such as the Royal Institute of British Architects, The London Society and the Town Planning Institute. In conclusion, this article suggests that the regional imagination, central to the later development of planning, was clearly visible in the programme of work undertaken during the First World War and that associational networks were an important part of early professionalization in planning in Britain. The article reports on wide-ranging meetings organized by the Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology committee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining in London, England on December 15-16, 2003. Over 100 scientific contributions were made up from keynote papers, contributed talks and poster presentations. Information on the topics discussed during the British Crystallographic Association's (BCA) 25th Annual Meeting at University of Kent, Canterbury is presented. This article is about how UK-based transnational corporations source expertise and move highly skilled people among their sites. TNCs rely heavily on their internal labour markets for skills. We examine patterns and trends in the ways that TNCs in two sectors, aerospace and extractives, dynamically orchestrate and deploy their networks of expertise internationally to address the demands of different markets. We chart the types of mobility that exist, identify how and why they are used, and explore some of the institutional, industrial, organizational and technological factors that influence these trends. We show that different types of mobility play distinct roles in organizations. Companies respond to mobility calls from diverse stimuli by linking together mobility options into portfolios of moves that represent negotiated responses to industrial and individual requirements. This article establishes the importance of International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) conferences. The articles Trends in Knowledge Organization Research by I. C. McIlwaine, and Fundamentals of Knowledge Organization by Birger Hjørland are testimony to the importance of conference in the field of knowledge organization. The original versions were presented at the conference of the Spanish chapter of ISKO held in Salamanca, Spain in May 2003. These articles are comprehensive analyses of where and what is the field of knowledge organization. of course, much of what appears in ISKO conference proceedings merit wider consideration. McIlwaine's bibliography particularly bears this out. Further, the conferences themselves are the stuff of which scholarly cloth is woven. The papers, discussions, and casual encounters are full of brilliant thread, woven into the tapestry that is knowledge organization. ISKO is the primary international venue for this field. It holds an international conference every two years. The next conference, the 8th International ISKO Conference, will be held in London, England on July 13-16, 2004, with the theme: Knowledge Organization and the Global Information Society.

It is frequently asserted that national environmental movement organisations (EMOs) have, as an unintended consequence of their public relations strategies, a tendency to ignore local activists. Using a variety of research methods - participant observation, semi-structured interviews, a survey and network analysis of national, regional and local EMOs in London - we explode that myth. Although national EMOs cooperate mostly with other national EMOs, they do not turn their backs on local campaigners. On the contrary, several highly influential national EMOs (Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and Campaign to Protect Rural England) seek to involve grassroots activists. Local campaigners make surprisingly few demands on national EMOs, understand that national EMOs have resource constraints, and do not generally feel marginalised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are excellent accounts of the Jewish response to "trafficking" in women for prostitution during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but recent analyses of the white slavery phenomenon have raised new questions. This article concerns the response of Jews in England, and specifically the motivations and activities of those who founded the Jewish Association for the Protection of Girls and Women (JAPGW). The JAPGW set the model for initiatives carried out by Jewish communities throughout the British Empire and was a primary contributor to internationalisation of the issue on the part of the League of Nations after the First World War. The JAPGW's motivations were complex: they involved a particular religious outlook, the response to antisemitism and assumptions along lines of class and gender. In late Victorian England, dance teachers lacked national representation and means of communication among themselves to address professional concerns. By 1930, at least ten professional associations had emerged in Britain, some of which, such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), The British Association of Teachers and Dancing (BATD) and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), are still active today. Little has been written about the wider context of their foundation and of earlier initiatives to establish a professional body for dance pedagogy in England. A key figure in contemporaneous efforts to develop an infrastructure was Robert Morris Crompton (c. 1845-1926), a London-based dancing master. Choreographer, writer, and founder-editor of the first periodical devoted to dance in England (Dancing, 1891-1893), Robert Crompton finally succeeded in establishing a national organisation that was devoted to both social and stage dancing in 1904. As the first president of the ISTD, his visionary ideals of an annual technical congress, improvements in the status of the profession, and the future enhancement of dance as an art were placed on a firm institutional footing. Charlatan practitioners, declining standards in the ballroom, and unhelpful licensing laws, together with a scattered and highly individualized competitive profession, were challenges in the early 1890s that Crompton initially failed to overcome. Records of his dreams and anxieties in Dancing provide valuable insight into the problems/hat beset the teachers of the time. In tandem with other source material relating to the social context for dance of the period, consideration of the trials and aspirations that lay behind Crompton's campaign for a national professional association help to broaden understanding of the place of dance in late Victorian society in England. The article discusses the objective structured public health examination (OSPHE), a work-based learning developed by the Faculty of Public Health in England. It is stated that OSPHE is intended to measure healthcare professionals' clinical competence in an examination setting. It is concluded that the trainees will have to take responsibility to demonstrate public health competency and to ensure techniques to pass the examination.

During World War II, Bletchley Park, a former country house in Buckinghamshire, was the home of the British Government's Code and Cypher School. The small organization that arrived in August 1939 grew into a staff of more than 10,000 by 1945. The need for progressively larger and more complex accommodation necessitated a near-continuous building programme. Despite some demolitions and post-war alterations, many of the site's wartime buildings still stand. A recent programme of architectural study, landscape survey and archival research by English Heritage has provided for the first time a comprehensive overview of Bletchley's development. The sequence and functions of the standing buildings have been established, and ways in which their evolution related to the earlier (largely Victorian) landscaped park have been explored. Bletchley represents in its architecture the evolution of a cryptographic research centre from modest beginnings into a global signals intelligence centre. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In England, primary care organizations (primary care trusts, PCTs) have scope to influence the provision of health care at the margin. However, when faced with difficult commissioning choices, restriction of services potentially leaves them vulnerable to legal challenge. PCTs are developing different approaches to priority setting but there is a need to develop processes that lead to more consistent, accountable and fair decision-making. Our objective was to describe recent local developments on prioritization decision-making. Methods: Rationing policies in PCTs in West Yorkshire and North & East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (NEYNL) Strategic Health Authority areas in 2003 were examined. To evaluate priority setting, we compared the descriptive findings with an internationally recognized ethical framework for priority setting, 'accountability for reasonableness' (AFR). Results: PCTs varied as regards the stage of policy development they had reached. Rationing by exclusion was the most common approach to prioritization, but in general PCTs failed to make the rationale for their decisions explicit and accessible. The importance of an appeals process was recognized by the majority of PCTs. Those that had developed a formal process to address difficult commissioning decisions were an exception. Conclusions: Adopting AFR as a prioritization framework can serve to improve the fairness and consistency of the decision-making process, reducing the vulnerability of PCTs to legal challenge. Characteristics of rationing policies already in place fulfil some of the AFR conditions but there remains scope for further improvements in their design and dissemination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the accreditation scheme for health library services in England and Wales. It was determined that the use of an accreditation scheme for health library services can be an effective method to develop positive changes that improve access to the knowledge domain of health care for health care personnel. Organizations which are in charge in the library services for the National Health Service (NHS) should also adopt or maintain its use. However, in the survey on the assessment accreditation of NHS library services, it showed at least 15 percent positive perceptions for the accreditation.

This article explores some of the issues underpinning the development of a British Council funded Higher Education Link between the University of the Western Cape, South Africa and University College Chichester, England. The Link began in 1999 and finished in 2005. The focus of the Link was child protection. The initial emphasis was on developing national multidisciplinary child protection training programmes within South Africa. Latterly this has expanded to encompass the broader concept of child welfare, particularly children's well being and children's participation in both South Africa and England. For both partners the process has been challenging and transforming. The article reflects on the initial objectives of the Link programme and analyses lessons learned both professionally and personally for the South African and English authors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
