This year's New Gallery, which has just opened its doors, is really but little more than an overflow from the Royal Academy. But there is one great difference—the best places on the line are not reserved, as at Burlington House, for the productions, however incompetent, of certain privileged men. Besides, the rooms are smaller and less crowded by a heterogeneous array of conflicting colors and designs. Much of the work that is most charming, and makes the charm most keenly felt, would simply not be seen at the Academy, where refinement of method counts for little.
