Abstract

The author discusses the works of artists Johannes Vermeer and Peter Paul Rubens. He criticizes the acclaim that Vermeer has received over Rubens, and claims that this was started by novelist Proust who described Vermeer's "View of Delft" as the most beautiful painting in the world. He also cites the disparity in the number of visitors to Washington, D.C.'s National Gallery of Art exhibit titled "Johannes Vermeer," which attracted more visitors than London, England's National Gallery exhibit titled "Rubens: A Master in the Making."
