Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Associated Arthritis (IBD-associated arthritis) poses a significant challenge, intertwining the complexities of both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and arthritis, significantly compromising patient quality of life. While existing medications offer relief, these drugs often initiate adverse effects, necessitating the requirement for safer therapeutic alternatives. Artemisia herba-alba , a traditional medicinal plant known for its anti-inflammatory properties, emerges as a potential candidate. Our computational study focused on examining 20 bioactive compounds derived from A. herba-alba for potential treatment of IBD-associated arthritis. These compounds detected in A. herba-alba include camphor, alpha-thujone, eucalyptol, cis-chrysanthenyl acetate, vicenin-2, 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid, chlorogenic acid, hispidulin, isoschaftoside, isovitexin, patuletin-3-glucoside, vanillic acid, rutin, schaftoside, lopinavir, nelfinavir, quercetin, artemisinin, gallic acid, and cinnamic acid. Following rigorous analysis encompassing pharmacokinetics, toxicity profiles, and therapeutic targets, compounds with favorable, beneficial characteristics were identified. In addition, comparative analysis with disease-gene associations demonstrated the interconnectedness of inflammatory pathways across diseases. Molecular docking studies provided mechanistic insights indicating this natural plant components potential to modulate critical inflammatory pathways. Overall, our findings indicate that A. herba-alba -derived compounds may be considered as therapeutic agents for IBD-associated arthritis, warranting further experimental validation and clinical exploration.

Arthritis is a debilitating condition impacting the quality of life for millions worldwide, characterized by pain and inflammation. Understanding the mechanisms of arthritis and developing effective treatments are crucial. This study investigated the hydroethanolic extract of Artemisia herba-alba for its protective potential against arthritis hallmarks, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation in vitro. It also assessed its in vivo anti-arthritic activity. The phytochemical analysis identified various compounds within the extract, with high concentrations of polyphenols and flavonoids. These compounds are associated with numerous health benefits, making A. herba-alba a potential source of valuable phytochemicals. A. herba-alba demonstrated a notable effect in body weight loss, paw edema, and arthritic severity. Histopathological examination revealed structural improvements in bone and muscle tissues, emphasizing its therapeutic potential in managing chronic arthritis. Furthermore, while these findings are promising, further studies are necessary to delve deeper into the mechanisms underlying the observed hematological changes and to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the in vivo results. This research sets the stage for continued exploration, ultimately aiming to unlock the full potential of A. herba-alba in addressing chronic arthritis and enhancing the lives of those affected by this condition., (© 2024. Background: Plants are harmed by parasitic organisms, and toxic poisons are created. Phytopathogenic fungi create toxins that can severely harm plants' basic physiological functioning., Objective: Investigation of antifungal impact of various fractions of methanol extract of Artemisia herba-alba to Aspergillus niger as a plant pathogen., Methods: Artemisia herba-alba extract was purified using column chromatography, giving various antifungal fractions tested versus A. niger ., Results: The 6 th fraction give the highest inhibition zone with a diameter of 5.4 cm and MIC 125.02 ± 4.9 μg/ml, which was identified using Mass spectroscopy, 1 HNMR, Elemental analysis as well as IR testing, revealing the chemical formula of the purified fraction. Ultrastructure alteration of treated A. niger was examined versus control using the transmission electron microscope. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can infect millions of people worldwide causing mild to life-threating infections. The current study demonstrates the first comparative anti-HSV type 1 activity and phytochemical investigation of Artemisia herba-alba and Thymus capitatus collected from Egypt and Libya. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis allowed the identification of 56 and 38 compounds in the Egyptian and Libyan Artemisia herba-alba ethanolic extracts, respectively, in addition to 46 and 50 compounds in the Egyptian and Libyan Thymus capitatus ethanolic extracts, respectively. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of their corresponding essential oils revealed the presence of 15, 17, 17 and 8 compounds in Egyptian and Libyan Artemisia herba-alba and Thymus capitatus, respectively. The major chemical classes of the identified compounds were phenolic acids, flavonoids and oxygenated monoterpenes. Evaluation of the anti-HSV1 activities of the studied extracts showed that the Egyptian Thymus capitatus ethanolic extracts were the most potent extract with more than 200-fold reduction in the viral PFU.

Artemisia herba-alba (AHA) is a traditionally used plant to treat various diseases, including diabetes and metabolic dysfunctions. Plant extracts are generally explored empirically without a deeper assessment of their mechanism of action. Here, we describe a combinatorial study of biochemical, molecular, and bioinformatic (metabolite-protein pharmacology network) analyses to elucidate the mechanism of action of AHA and shed light on its multilevel effects in the treatment of diabetes-related advanced glycation end-products (AGE)-induced liver damages. The extract's polyphenols and flavonoids content were measured and then identified via LC-Q-TOF-MS/MS. Active compounds were used to generate a metabolite-target interaction network via Swiss Target Prediction and other databases. The extract was tested for its antiglycation and aggregation properties. Next, THLE-2 liver cells were challenged with AGEs, and the mechanistic markers were measured [TNF-α, IL-6, nitric oxide, total antioxidant capacity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and caspase 3]. Metabolite and network screening showed the involvement of AHA in diabetes, glycation, liver diseases, aging, and apoptosis. Experimental confirmation showed that AHA inhibited protein modification and AGE formation. Additionally, AHA reduced inflammatory mediators (IL-6, TNFα), oxidative stress markers (NO, LPO), and apoptosis (Caspase 3). On the other hand, cellular total antioxidant capacity was restored to normal levels. The combinatorial study showed that AHA regulates AGE-induced liver damages through MAPK-AKT and AGE-RAGE signaling pathways. This report highlights the combination of experimental and network pharmacology for the exact elucidation of AHA mechanism of action as a multitarget option in the therapy of diabetes and AGEs-related diseases., (© 2022. The focus of this roadmap is to evaluate the possible efficacy of Artemisia herba-alba Asso. (Asteraceae) for the treatment of COVID-19 and some of its symptoms and several comorbidities using a combination of in silico (molecular docking) studies, reported ethnic uses, and pharmacological activity studies of this plant. In this exploratory study, we show that various phytochemicals from Artemisia herba-alba can be useful against COVID-19 (in silico studies) and for its associated comorbidities. COVID-19 is a new disease, so reports of any therapeutic treatments against it (traditional or conventional) are scanty. On the other hand, we demonstrate, using Artemisia herba-alba as an example, that through a proper search and identification of medicinal plant(s) and their phytochemicals identification using secondary data (published reports) on the plant's ethnic uses, phytochemical constituents, and pharmacological activities against COVID-19 comorbidities and symptoms coupled with the use of primary data obtained from in silico (molecular docking and molecular dynamics) studies on the binding of the selected plant's phytochemicals (such as: rutin, 4,5-di- O -caffeoylquinic acid, and schaftoside) with various vital components of SARS-CoV-2, it may be possible to rapidly identify plants that are suitable for further research regarding therapeutic use against COVID-19 and its associated symptoms and comorbidities.

Context: Fructose consumption is associated with the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in human and animal models., Objective: This study investigates the ability of an aqueous extract of Artemisia herba-alba Asso (AH) to ameliorate fructose-induced MetS in Male Wistar rats., Methods: AH extract at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w./day was administered for six weeks to MetS animals., Results: Liquid fructose (10% w/v) intake did not vary total animal body weight, whereas, it produced moderate hyperglycemia associated with metabolic and histological alterations. Treating MetS rats with AH extract improved insulin sensitivity, alleviated atherogenic dyslipidaemia and decreased lipid deposition in their hepatic tissues. Additionally, AH extract was found to raise GSH level and antioxidant enzymes (GPx, GST and CAT) activities in rat livers homogenates., Conclusion: The results here reported demonstrated, for the first time, that A. herba-alba have therapeutic proprieties against fructose-induced MetS in rodent model.

The study of bioactive molecules of natural origin is a focus of current research. Thymus algeriensis and Artemisia herba-alba are two medicinal plants widely used by the Moroccan population in the traditional treatment of several pathologies linked to inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the single and combined antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the essential oils extracted from these two medicinal plants, and also their potential toxicity. Essential oils were extracted using hydro-distillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by two methods: the scavenging of the free radical DPPH, and the reduction in iron. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by evaluating the edema development induced by carrageenan injecting, while the analgesic power was evaluated according to the number of abdominal contortions induced by the intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid (0.7%). The acute oral toxicity was performed to assess the potential toxicity of the studied EOs, followed by an analysis of the blood biochemical parameters. The results of the two antioxidant tests indicated that our extract mixture exhibits good iron reduction capacity and very interesting DPPH free radical scavenging power, with an IC 50 of around 4.38 ± 0.98 μg/mL higher than that of the benchmark antioxidant, BHT. The anti-inflammatory test demonstrated that the mixture administered orally at a dose of 150 mg/kg has a better activity, exceeding that of 1% Diclofenac, with a percentage of maximum inhibition of the edema of 89.99 ± 4.08. The number of cramps in the mice treated with the mixture at a dose of 150 mg/kg is significantly lower (29.80 ± 1.92) than those of the group treated with Tramadol (42.00 ± 2.70), respectively. The toxicity results show no signs of toxicity with an LD 50 greater than 150 mg/Kg. These interesting results show that the two plants' EOs had an important anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant activity, and also a powerful synergistic effect, which encourages further in-depth investigations on their pharmacological proprieties.

Artemisia herba-alba is widely used in traditional medicines for the treatment of several diseases. From the aerial parts organic extract of A. herba-alba , two new compounds, 1,3,8-trihydroxyeudesm-4-en-7 α ,11 β H-12,6 α -olide ( 1 ) and 5- β -​ D -​glucopyranosyloxy​-​7-methoxy-​6H-​benzopyran-​2-​one ( 2 ), respectively, together with five known metabolites: 3 α ,8 β -dihydroxygermacr-4(15),9(10)-dien-7 β ,11 α H,12,6 α -olide ( 3 ), 1 β ,8 α -dihydroxy-11 α ,13-dihydrobalchanin ( 4 ), 11-epiartapshin ( 5 ), tomenin ( 6 ) and benzoic acid, p -​( β -​ D -​glucopyranosyloxy)​-​methyl ester ( 7 ), were isolated and identified. The chemical structures were proven depending upon spectroscopic analysis, including 1 D/2D NMR as and ESI-MS. Compound 1 inhibited Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibited antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Artemisia herba-alba (Aha) is an aromatic and medicinal plant rich in health-promoting flavonoids compounds that play an important role as antioxidant. For better utilization of this resource, the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of flavonoids and antiradical activities of obtained extracts from Aha using response surface methodology was assessed. A four-factor five-level central composite rotatable design was employed to discuss these extracting parameters: ethanol concentration ( X1 ), temperature ( X2 ), extraction time ( X3 ) and solvent to sample ratio ( X4 ). The optimum extraction conditions for simultaneous maximization of total flavonoids (TF) and scavenging activity were solvent concentration of 50%, temperature of 55 °C, extraction time of 50 min and solvent to sample ratio of 90 mL/g. Under these conditions, the experimental yield of TF and DPPH-radical scavenging activity IC 50% were respectively 102.49 mg CE/g DM and 7 µg/mL. Additionally, good and moderate linear correlation was observed between antiradical activity and TF content ( R 2 = 0.709) which indicated that these compounds are responsible for antioxidant activity of Aha. When compared to the most conventional extraction, antioxidant activity and amounts of major flavonoids are enhanced when using UAE with reduced extraction time.

Essential oils (EOs) are one of the most important groups of plant metabolites responsible for their biological activities. This study was carried out to study the chemical composition and the antimicrobial effects of Artemisia herba-alba and Origanum majorana essential oils against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and a fungal strain isolated from spoiled butter. The plants were collected in the region Azzemour of South West Morocco and the EOs, extracted by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by GC-MS. The antimicrobial activity was determined using the agar paper disc method. The main components of A. herba-alba EO were cis-thujone, trans-thujone and vanillyl alcohol; in O. majorana EO terpinen-4-ol, isopulegol and β-phellandrene predominated. Both essential oils exhibited growth inhibiting activities in a concentration-dependent manner on several microorganism species. Our results demonstrated that O. majorana and A. herba-alba EOs could be effective natural antibacterial agents in foods., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Pregnant women prefer herbal medicines more than pharmaceutical drugs due to the cultural belief that herbs are more suffer during pregnancy for an accurate foetus development. Artemisia herba-alba (Asteraceae) is one of the most used plants in the Mediterranean region to treat various diseases including diabetes, hypertension, spasmodic dysphonia and some bacterial infection., Aim of the Study: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Artemisia herba-alba consumption during pregnancy on fertility, physical and behavior developments of mice offspring from birth-to-weaning days., Materials and Methods: Female pregnant mice were divided into three groups and orally administrated with 80 and 150 mg/kg/day of the methanol extract of Artemisia h.a respectively, during the entire period of gestation. At birth, total fertility rate was counted. Body development; neuromotor reflex and behavior were also examined in mice offspring RESULTS: Artemisia h.a (Aha) exposure significantly decreased the fertility ratio in both Aha-treated groups and increased the weight and length of mice offspring in 80 mg/kg/day Aha-exposed group. Moreover, Aha administration prolonged the time of completing the reflex response of surface righting, negative geotaxis, cliff avoidance and jumping test of mice offspring in Aha-exposed groups., Conclusion: The present study provides strong evidence that discourage the use of Artemisia h.a during gestation period., (Copyright © 2018. A total of 80 individuals collected from eight populations growing wild in different geographic zones were considered to assess the intraspecific variability of essential oil composition, genetic diversity and population structure of Artemisia herba-alba. The essential oil composition varied significantly between populations. Essential oil profiles were classified into four chemotypes (trans-sabinyl acetate, α-thujone/trans-sabinyl acetate, camphor and α-thujone/camphor/β-thujone). Despite significant correlation between the amount of some essential oil compounds and a set of climatic data, the global chemical divergence among populations was not related to their bioclimatic and geographic appurtenances. A high level of genetic diversity within populations was revealed either with RAPD and ISSR markers (Na = 1.67, PPL = 66.5%, H = 0.26, I = 0.38 and Na = 1.7, PPL = 69.8%, H = 0.26, I = 0.38, respectively). The level of genetic diversity varied across populations and chemotypes. Populations from the α-thujone/trans-sabinyl acetate chemotype exhibited the highest genetic diversity as revealed by the RAPD markers. However, populations from α-thujone/camphor/β-thujone chemotype showed the important genetic variation determined by ISSR markers. A significant genetic differentiation among populations and among chemotypes was detected. The combined analysis showed a significant correlation (r = 0.484, p = .032) between the chemical and molecular markers. The PCA, performed on percentages of major oil compounds and the frequencies of polymorphic RAPD and ISSR bands, divided populations according to their chemotypic classification. Taking into consideration the current situation of A. herba-alba populations and their endangered habitats, these results are of value in order to ensure the in-situ and ex-situ conservation of this medicinal species., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The development of eco-friendly and effective insecticides is crucial for public health worldwide. Herein, we focused on the desert wormwood (Artemisia herba-alba), a plant widely used in Arabian traditional medicine, as a source of green nanoinsecticides against mosquito vectors, as well as growth inhibitors to be employed against microbial pathogens. Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) fabricated with the A. herba-alba extract were tested on Indian and Saudi Arabian strains of Anopheles, Aedes and Culex mosquitoes. The chemical profile of the A. herba-alba extract was determined by LC-DAD-MS and 1 H NMR studies. Then, AgNPs were studied using UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, TEM, and EDX analyses. Artemisia herba-alba-synthesized AgNPs showed high larvicidal toxicity against mosquitoes from both Indian and Saudi Arabian strains. LC 50 of AgNPs against Indian strains was 9.76 μg/ml for An. stephensi, 10.70 μg/ml for Ae. aegypti and 11.43 μg/ml for Cx. quinquefasciatus, whereas against Saudi Arabian strains it was 33.58 μg/ml for Ae. aegypti and 38.06 μg/ml for Cx. pipiens. In adulticidal experiments, A. herba-alba extract showed LC 50 ranging from 293.02 to 450 μg/ml, while AgNP LC 50 ranged from 8.22 to 27.39 μg/ml. Further, low doses of the AgNPs inhibited the growth of selected microbial pathogens. Overall, A. herba-alba can be further considered as a source of phytochemicals, with special reference to saponins, for effective and prompt fabrication of AgNPs with relevant insecticidal and bactericidal activity against species of high public health importance., (Copyright © 2018. An unprecedented methodology was developed to simultaneously assign the relative percentages of the major chiral compounds and their prevailing enantiomeric form in crude essential oils (EOs). In a first step the infrared (IR) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of the crude essential oils were recorded and in a second step they were modelized as a linear weighted combination of the IR and VCD spectra of the individual spectra of pure enantiomer of the major chiral compounds present in the EOs. The VCD spectra of enantiomer of known enantiomeric excess shall be recorded if they are not yet available in a library of VCD spectra. For IR, the spectra of pure enantiomer or racemic mixture can be used. The full spectra modelizations were performed using a well known and powerful mathematical model (least square estimation: LSE) which resulted in a weighting of each contributing compound. For VCD modelization, the absolute value of each weighting represented the percentage of the associate compound while the attached sign addressed the correctness of the enantiomeric form used to build the model. As an example, a model built with the non-prevailing enantiomer will show a negative sign of the weighting value. For IR spectra modelization, the absolute value of each weighting represented the percentage of the compounds without of course accounting for the chirality of the prevailing enantiomers. Comparison of the weighting values issuing from IR and VCD spectra modelizations is a valuable source of information: if they are identical, the EOs are composed of nearly pure enantiomers, if they are different the chiral compounds of the EOs are not in an optically pure form. The method was applied on four samples of essential oil of Artemisia herba-alba in which the three major compounds namely (-)-α-thujone, (+)-β-thujone and (-)-camphor were found in different proportions as determined by GC-MS and chiral HPLC using polarimetric detector. In order to validate the methodology, the modelization of the VCD spectra was performed on purpose using the individual VCD spectra of (-)-α-thujone, (+)-β-thujone and (+)-camphor instead of (-)-camphor. Ethnopharmacologic Relevance: Artemisia herba-alba Asso ("desert wormwood" in English; "armoise blanche" in French; "shaih" in Arabic), is a medicinal and strongly aromatic plant widely used in traditional medicine by many cultures since ancient times. It is used to treat inflammatory disorders (colds, coughing, bronchitis, diarrhea), infectious diseases (skin diseases, scabies, syphilis) and others (diabetes, neuralgias). In Jordanian traditional medicine, this plant is used as antiseptic and against skin diseases, scabies, syphilis, fever as well as menstrual and nervous disorders., Aim of the Study: Considering the traditional medicinal uses and the lack of scientific studies addressing the cellular and molecular players involved in these biological activities, the present study was designed to unveil the antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities of A. herba-alba Asso essential oil at doses devoid of toxicity to mammalian cells., Materials and Methods: Chemical analysis of A. herba-alba essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation from aerial parts was carried out by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antifungal activity (minimal inhibitory concentrations and minimal lethal concentrations) was evaluated against yeasts, dermatophyte and Aspergillus strains. In order to explore the mechanisms behind the anti-fungal effect of the essential oil, the germ tube inhibition assay was evaluated using Candida albicans. The assessment of cell viability was accomplished using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and the in vitro anti-inflammatory potential of A. herba-alba oil at the periphery and central nervous system was evaluated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse macrophages and microglia, respectively., Results: Oxygen-containing monoterpenes are the main compounds of the oil, namely 1,8-cineole (20.1%), β-thujone (25.1%), α-thujone (22.9%) and camphor (10.5%). Among the fungal strains tested, the oil demonstrated potential against Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum, with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal lethal concentration (MCL) values of 0.32 mg/mL and Cryptococcus neoformans with MIC of 0.64 mg/mL. The oil revealed a strong inhibitory effect on germ tube formation in C. albicans with inhibition of filamentation around 90% at a concentration 0.16 mg/mL. Importantly, the essential oil significantly inhibited NO production evoked by LPS without cytotoxicity at concentrations up to 1.25 µL/mL in macrophages and up to 0.32 µL/mL in microglia. Furthermore, evaluation of cell viability in RAW 264.7 macrophages, BW2 microgliacells and HaCaT keratinocytes showed no cytotoxicity at concentrations up to 0.32 μL/mL., Conclusions: It was possible to find appropriate doses of A. herba-alba oil with both antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities and without detrimental effects towards several mammalian cell types. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Centaurium erythraea Rafn (CE), Artemisia herba-alba Asso (AHA) and Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (TFG) are traditionally used to treat type 2 diabetes in Algeria, previous studies have found that extracts of these plants were effective to treat or prevent experimental diabetes induced by high-fat diet (HFD)., Aim of the Study: Describe the additional effects of these extracts on lipid tissue deposition in HFD., Materials and Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed with HFD to induce type 2 Diabetes. Groups of mice were given plant extracts orally at 2g/kg/bodyweight daily for 20 weeks during establishment of diabetes, or for 18 weeks after confirmation of diabetes at the 17th week. Liver and other tissue samples were stained with Oil Red O., Results: Liver steatosis was confirmed with HFD. CE, AHA and TFG extracts improved liver steatosis by the end of the preventive (20 weeks) and curative periods (35 weeks). This was most marked for CE extract (p<0.05), less so with TFG and AHA. No steatosis was found in other tissues., Conclusion: CE extract had a clear hepatoprotective effect in this mouse model of diet-induced type 2 diabetes. AHA and TFG had a minimal or no significant effect on steatosis. In samples of Artemisia campestris (AC), Artemisia herba-alba (AHA) and Salvia jordanii (SJ) essential oils, up to 200 distinct volatile compounds were identified. Using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography–olfactometry–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-O-MS), different panelists detected 52 of these compounds. This study offers the most detailed analysis of bioactive compound profiles conducted so far. The most abundant compounds identified were curcumene, making up 12.96% of AC, and camphor, constituting 21.67% of AHA and 19.15% of SJ. The compounds with the highest odor activity value (OAV) were (E,Z)-2,4-nonadienal (geranium, pungent), 3-nonenal (cucumber) and 2-undecenal (sweet) in AC, AHA and SJ, respectively. AHA essential oil showed significant antioxidant activity (IC50 = 41.73 ± 4.14 mg/g) and hydroxyl radical generation (hydroxylation percentage = 29.62 ± 3.14), as assessed by the diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. In this modest work, a local biopolymer (CHA), biodegradable, non-toxic, and soluble in acidic media, was extracted from the plant Artemisia herba-alba located in the eastern region of Morocco, and characterized by FT-IR, in order to valorize it as a corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 1 M HCl medium. The electrochemical tests show that the extract is an excellent corrosion protective agent, reaching a maximum value of 96.17% at the concentration of 800 mg/L in the inhibitor. The potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves indicate the mixed behavior of the extract, to reduce the current density from 3.445 mA/cm2 to 0.104 mA/cm2 in the presence of 800 mg/L in the inhibitor. The biopolymer CHA of the extract of Artemisia herba-alba undergoes the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, whose adsorption energy is −20.75 kJ/mol, which is attributed to the presence of electrostatic and covalent bonds. In addition, the visualization of the metal surface by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates the formation of a protective layer formed by the extracts of Artemisia herba-alba, which confirms the protective characteristic of the extract used. In Morocco, the endemic Artemisia herba-alba is well known by its traditional uses and health benefits. The search for natural, safe, and effective antibacterial and antifungal agents from plants is in high demand due to microbial and fungal resistance to conventional synthetic antibiotics and antifungal drugs. In this study, the A. herba-alba was collected from the region of Fez-Boulemane during the periods of March, June, and September. Essential oils (EOs) were extracted from the aerial part of the plant by the hydrodistillation method. The chemical constituents were determined using GC-MS as analytical tools. The antimicrobial activities of different oils were tested using the macrodilution method. The results showed the difference in the yields between the three EOs (0.49, 1.74, 1.30% (mL/100 g)), respectively, as well as in their corresponding chemical compositions. The main constituents revealed by GC-MS are higher contents of oxygenated monoterpenes (84.7, 84.4, 81%), such as cis chrysanthenyl acetate (30, 26.7, 27.6%), β-thujone (23.2, 12.9, 15.4%), camphor (9.76, 14.3, 15.8%), chrysanthenone (2.4, 1, 14%), 1,8-cineole (1.5, 11.7, 11.8%), trans β-dihydroterpineol (7.8, 7.2, 6.9%), α-thujone (4.8, 3, 5.4%), and sesquiterpenic davanone (3.9, 1.5, 1.4%), respectively. The three EOs biological activities' results showed significant antimicrobial effects against four bacteria tested (E. coli, B. subtilis, S. aureus, M. luteus), with the MIC values ranging from 0.1 to 0.03% (v/v), as well as interesting antifungal effects on both wood rot fungi against four fungi examined (G. trabeum, P. placenta, C. puteana, C. versicolor) and molds against three microorganisms tested (A. niger, P. digitatum, P. expansum), with MIC values ranging from 0.2 to 0.03% (v/v) and 0.4 to 0.03% (v/v), respectively. The June and September EO samples showed more potent activities than those collected during March. Our research findings showed quantitative variability in both EO contents and chemical compositions, which could be due to the phenological stages, climatic conditions of growth, and harvesting periods. The potent results of the antimicrobial/antifungal activities were provided by the EOs of June and September and might be correlated to the contribution and synergism effect of all oxygenated monoterpenes. These results support the possible application of A. herba-alba EOs as natural and safe antibacterial agents, and an effective alternative to synthetic drugs, enabling the prevention and treatment of certain pathogenic infections in food and health, and the preservation of wood alteration against fungi. This work aims to study cultivable actinobacterial isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Artemisia herba-alba Asso; an important component of the Mediterranean dry steppe flora. The isolates functional attributes with respect to antifungal, in vitro growth-promotion properties and enzymatic capacities, were studied. A total of eleven cultivable actinobacterial strains were isolated and identified as Streptomyces species by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The eleven Streptomyces strains were positive for the production of almost all the hydrolytic enzymes tested, while the majority had ACC deaminase activity (6 strains) and exhibited ammonia (7 strains), siderophores production (9 strains) and phosphate solubilization (6 strains). Two out of the eleven strains named Streptomyces sp. BKS30 and BKS40 showed antifungal activities. One promising Streptomyces sp. strain BKS30 that was in-depth characterized morphologically and biochemically was further tested for its antifungal activity for the filtrate and the butanolic extract against nine target-fungi as well as for its antioxidant activity by DPPH and ABST tests. The obtained results demonstrate that Streptomyces species isolated from the rhizosphere of Artemisia herba-alba Asso have the potential for different biological activities including antifungal and antioxidant activities particularly for strain BKS30. Actinobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of plants are of interest as they produce a diverse range of molecules, such as antibiotics and enzymes. This study investigates the antibacterial activity, plant growth-promoting (PGP) abilities as well as the production of extracellular enzymes by the actinobacterial strain BTS40. This strain was isolated from the rhizospheric soil of the medicinal plant Artemisia herba-alba Asso that was naturally grown in a semi-arid environment. Morphological characteristics showed that the strain BTS40 belongs to the genus Streptomyces. Analysis of BTS40's 16S rRNA gene sequence showed 99.45% similarity to Streptomyces alboniger NRRL B-1832T, in the EzTaxon database. This actinobacterium showed only antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The strain also showed potential multiple traits for plant growth promotion and hydrolysis of enzymes. • Regular consumption of Artemisia herba-alba is advisable and beneficial for preventing inflammation-related diseases. • Extracts of Artemisia herba-alba have a great potential for medical and local applications, i.e. against skin sunburns. • The development of industrial usage of Artemisia herba-alba is an economical alternative for farmers in semi-desert regions, i.e. Algerian lands. Artemisia herba-alba (AHA) is a medicinal plant known for its preventive capacities against chronic diseases. Inflammation is a naturally occurring cellular response to noxious stimuli, and both acute and chronic inflammation are involved in human disorders. Preventing and limiting the negative impact of inflammation by using phytocompounds has attracted a lot of attention. Here, we show that AHA extracts are potent anti-inflammatory products at low doses in white blood cells, treated with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), a pro-inflammatory trigger. Regardless of the mode of extraction, i.e. maceration or microwave, all extracts reduced on dose-dependent manner reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by the pro-inflammatory compound PMA in white blood cells and leukemic Jurkat cell line. The induction of the anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated by the measurement of glutathione metabolism (glutathione reductase, transferase, and peroxidase), and protein-free thiols in Jurkat cells. Jurkat cells incubated with low to high concentrated AHA extracts, ranged from 10 to 100 g/mL, induced a fast cell response measured at one and six hours. Interestingly, extracts from the microwave showed a stronger induction, 5 to 10 fold changes at early time points, and maintained over 72 h. On the other hand, AHA extracts showed a moderate anti-proliferative effect in the leukemic Jurkat line. We concluded that AHA extracts enhance directly anti-inflammatory cell response, earlier via ROS induction. Later, however, vigorously maintained, independently from ROS, suggesting the intervention of the cellular metabolism in enhancing these effects. Considering the preventive and anti-inflammatory potential of AHA, regular consumption is advisable, and phytotherapeutic applications are encouraged to treat local inflammations. Purpose: This paper aims to evaluate systolic blood pressure (SBP), serum sodium/potassium levels and cardiac antioxidants after Artemisia herba-alba oral administration in spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR). Design/methodology/approach: Hypertension is a silent killer disease. The SHR model was used in this study due to the similarity of high blood pressure in human and rat. The SBP, serum sodium and potassium, urinary sodium and potassium, cardiac antioxidants and heart histology were examined in SHR after oral administration with 10 and 20% of the LD50 of Artemisia herba-alba during four weeks. Findings: The LD50 of Artemisia herba-alba was found to be 1000 mg/kg. Doses of 100 mg/kg (10% LD50) and 200 mg/kg (20% LD50) were considered in the present study. The oral administration of SHR rats with Artemisia extract at 100 and 200 mg/kg decreased (p < 0.01) the body weights, SBP and serum sodium and potassium. Meanwhile, cardiac superoxide dismutase and gluthatione peroxidase were increased in SHR-treated rats. Histology of SHR cardiac tissues showed tissue degenerative but oral intake of 100 and 200 mg/kg artemisia exhibited normal muscle fibers, acidophilic cytoplasm and central nuclei. Originality/value: The cardiovascular diseases are the first reason for high death rate in Western countries and collapsing economies due to hypertensive patients suffering high health-care costs. Artemisia herba-alba is a medicinal plant, and its essential oil is used as an antiseptic and antispasmodic. In this study, green synthesis of silver/silver oxide (Ag/Ag2O) nanoparticles was successfully synthesized from Artemisia Herba-Alba aqueous leaves extract. The effect of temperature, reaction time, the concentration of AgNO3, the quantity of plant extract, and pH on the synthesis process of Ag/Ag2O was optimized. More interesting, the results showed that only 5 min were required for reducing 1 mM AgNO3 into Ag/Ag2O NPs at room temperature. The crystalline nature of Ag/Ag2O NPs with an average crystallize size of 10.7-36.8 nm. The green synthesizing Ag/Ag2O NPs having in general a spherical morphology with particle/aggregate size less than 100 nm. The maximum UV-Vis absorption peak of Ag/Ag2O NPs was observed at the range of 418-435 nm giving optical band gaps of 2.05-2.30 eV. The TGA/DTA analysis shows significant organic contents (18 wt%) were physically and chemically adsorbed on the dry weight Ag/Ag2O NPs. The main objective of this study is to highlight the dietary risk of the prevalence of blaESBL producing multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in raw milk, besides evaluating the effect of Artemesia herba-alba and Thymus algeriensis essential oils against blaESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates from raw milk. Isolation and molecular identification of ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae and blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M genes encoding resistance were investigated by PCR and sequencing. The chemical composition of oils was effectuated by GC/MS. Antibacterial activity was tested by disc diffusion and microdilution methods. Six ceftazidime-resistant Enterobacteriaceae were identified; four of them were confirmed as ESBL producers and were found to be multi-drug resistant. blaSHV and blaTEM were found to be having the most dominant gene encoding resistance. The results of GC/MS analysis bestowed 31 and 35 compounds for A. herba-alba and T. algeriensis respectively. Klebsiella pneumonia SB6 (17.04 mm for A. herba-alba and 16.22 mm for T. algeriensis) revealed the highest zones of inhibition. MIC values were 1.56-12.5 mg/mL for both essential oils, while the MBC values were 6.25-25 mg/mL (A. herba-alba) and 12.5-25 mg/mL (T. algeriensis). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several medicinal plants are known to possess anticoagulant activity. This study proposed to evaluate the in vitro anticoagulant effect of methanol extracts of Citrullus colocynthis (fruits), Achillea fragrantissima (aerial parts) and Artemisia herba-alba (aerial parts) on normal human plasma. A total of 100 blood samples used in this study were taken from healthy volunteers at the Hematology laboratory of King Khalid Hospital, Al-Majmaah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from November 2018 to March 2019, using 3.2% sodium citrate tubes with a collection ratio of 9:1 blood to anticoagulant. PT, INR and PTT were used to assess the anticoagulant activity of these plants. The highest PT results were observed for 1000 μg/mL methanol extract of C. colocynthis (33.7±3.4 s) followed by 1000 μg/mL methanol extract of A. fragrantissima (28.2±2.6 s) and 1000 μg/mL methanol extract of A. herba-alba (26.4±0.2 s). Moreover, the highest PTT values were observed for 250, 500 and 1000 μg/mL A. fragrantissima (87.9±1.0, 97.9±5.1 and 112.5±1.1 s, respectively), 500 μg/mL and 1000 μg/mL C. colocynthis (65.1±1.0 and 106.4±0.4 s, respectively) and 1000 μg/mL A. herba-alba (157.0±3.0 s). The anticoagulant effect of methanol extracts of A. herba-alba, A. fragrantissima, and C. colocynthis were evaluated using coagulation assays, in which prolonged clotting time of their methanol extracts was observed. The concentrations of selected heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe) in stems and leaves of Artemisia herba-alba medicinal plant and soil samples were evaluated. Results showed that there in heavy metal concentrations of washed and unwashed parts of A. herba-alba from northern site (Irbid), Middle site (Al-Mafraq), and Souhern site (Ma'an) (P <.05). Moreover, the results of this study revealed that there is a correlation between heavy metal levels in medicinal plants and their concentrations in soil. Two standard reference materials of plant (SRM 1790a; spinach, CRM 281; ryegrass) and a standard reference material of soil (GBW 07406) were examined to validate the method used. There were good agreements between the measured values of these standard reference materials and their certified values. In addition to that high recoveries for tested elements were ranged between 91.7–97.7%, 90–96.6%, and 92.2–97.7% in (CRM281, ryegrass), (SRM1570a, spinach) and (GBW 04706, soil) respectively. It is reasonable to conclude that the variation in metal concentration from site to another site as well as from element to another element may be due to the different factors such as traffic volumes, the wind directions, the soil nature, and the element behavior. Background: Artemisia herba-alba (AHA) is largely used in folk medicine in different countries. However, rare studies provided toxicological evaluation regarding their safety on human health. Objective: This study investigated the safety of the standardized aqueous extract of AHA, like used by patients, to evaluate their toxicity in vivo and in vitro. Materials and Methods: For toxicological evaluation in vivo we used acute (during 14 days) and sub-acute oral gavages in Wistar rats (rats treated daily for 42 days at 1-5 g/kg bw) and the 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay was performed to determine the level of cell viability and the degree of cytotoxicity in vitro (0-30 µg/ml) on cultured spleen cells. Results: The LD50 was up to 2 g/kg. Signs of mortality and toxicity were observed after single doses and no-observed-adverse-effect levels in the sub acute toxicity was up to 2 g/kg bw. Compared to the control, the treatment did not produce any statistically significant changes on alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase serum titer. However, for creatinine and urea serum value, a significant increase (P < 0.05) was observed. The histological observations of liver and spleen tissues have shown well-preserved normal cells. Indeed for kidney tissues some artifacts of retraction and vascular congestion were noted for 3-5 g/kg doses after sub-chronic treatment. The addition of plant extracts to the spleen cells did not show any sign of toxicity for all doses tested. Artemisia herba-alba essential oil extract was investigated as green inhibitor for aluminum corrosion in 1 M HCl solution. The chemical analysis obtained by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, revealed 68 components. The inhibition efficiency was determined by weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The results revealed an increase of inhibition efficiency by maximum 92% trough increasing the oil concentration to 3 g/L at 333 K. The oil compounds adsorb by physisorption, follow Langmuir adsorption isotherm and act as mixed type inhibitors. The EIS results confirmed the adsorption mechanism process and the SEM observations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of harvest at different times on the chemical composition of phenolic compounds of Artemisia herba-alba. Plant material has been harvested at three times (July, November, and May). Methanolic plant extracts were obtained by means of ultrasound-assisted extraction and then analyzed by HPLC–electrospray ionization–Q-TOF–MS for their phenolic profile. The HPLC allowed the identification of 26 phenolic compounds, 12 of them were identified for the first time for this material. The phenolic compounds detected were 8 phenolic acids, 12 flavones, 4 isoflavone, 1 flavonol, and 1 flavanone. Results showed that during the all harvesting date, phenolic acids were predominant. In November, at the flowering period, it revealed the highest accumulation of total phenolic contents (515 ± 142 mg GAE/g dry matter weight [DMW]) in the methanolic extracts. The codling moth Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a destructive pest of apples and pears worldwide. Due to the phytotoxic effect of chemical fumigant on postharvest apple, botanical insecticides are an interesting alternative to synthetic chemical insecticides regarding their low environmental impact. Hence, in the present study, we investigated the chemical composition and fumigant toxicity of Artemisia herba-alba essential oil against the fifth-instar codling moth, under laboratory conditions. In total, 49 compounds were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The major constituents determined were dextro-camphor (30.60%), 2,6-dimethyl-1,3,6-heptatriene (26.71%), safranal (7.04%), borneol (3.94%) and eucalyptol (3.47%). A. herba-alba essential oil showed strong larvicidal activity, with minimum lethal concentration LC50 values of 13.49 and 04.45 μl L-1 air at 24 h and 48 h, respectively. The LT50 values at the lowest (1.81 μl L-1 air) and highest oil concentrations (18.18 μl L-1 air) were, in turn, 59.35 to 19.52 h. Artemisia herba-alba is a wild aromatic medicinal shrub which grows in the arid areas of North Africa and the Middle East. It is heavily subjected to loss and threats due to heavy grazing, cultivation and collection by the people who used it in folk medicine. In vitro propagation was experimented with different combinations of plant growth regulators to develop a suitable protocol to propagate this plant. In vitro microshoots of A. herba-alba were initiated from seeds. A maximum germination of seeds (94 %) was obtained using Paper-Bridge inserted in half Murashige and Skoog (MS) media and supplemented with 15 g/L of sucrose and 1.0 mg/L Gibberellic Acid (GA3). Proliferation of the in vitro plant was experimented at different concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg/L) of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP), kinetin, or 6-(gamma, gamma-Dimethylallylamino) purine (2iP). Rooting was experimented at different concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg/L) of, Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) or alpha-Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). The maximum proliferation of the A. herba-alba (23.6) microshoots was obtained when MS medium was supplemented with 1.0 mg/l 2iP and 1.5 mg/L GA3 . The maximum root number (18.8) and length (14.08 cm) was achieved using 0.5 mg/L IBA. Both IAA and NAA failed to promote root induction. The rooted plants acclimatized successfully with 50 % of survival and were grown in the greenhouse. Four aqueous extracts of different plant organs are the following: Artemisia herba-alba, Opuntia ficus-indica, Camellia sinensis and Phlomis crinita were evaluated against two bacterial strains: Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia, which are implicated in periodontal diseases . By using a disc method, these plant extracts demonstrated powerful bacterial activity against these Gram-negative strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration values of the four plant extracts varied between 0.03 and 590.82 mg/ml for the microbes. Another assay using commercial antibiotics and antibacterials as positive controls was also conducted. Values obtained after statistical analysis of inhibition diameters of all plant extracts demonstrated that for P. gingivalis, the aqueous extracts of A. herba-alba and O. ficus-indica were most effective, followed by those of C. sinensis and P. crinita. For P. intermedia, aqueous extracts of O. ficus-indica and C. sinensis appeared to be more efficient with significantly different ( P > 0.05) inhibition diameters, followed by those of O. ficus-indica and P. crinita. Total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols, and flavanols of the methanolic extract of the aerial part ofArtemisia herba-albawere determined. The extract was analyzed by liquid chromatography with photodiode array coupled with electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry and allowed to identify of 10 phenolic compounds. Apigenin-6-C-glycosyl flavonoids and caffeoylquinic acids were identified. Chlorogenic acid and 1,4 dicaffeoylquinic acid being the major constituents. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Twenty-three compounds, representing 97.8% of the total oil, were identified. The most abundant components were β-thujone (41.9%), α-thujone (18.4%), and camphor (13.2%). Methanolic extract and essential oil exhibited a considerable antioxidant activity as evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-pycrilhydrazil hydrate scavenging activity, reducing power, β-carotene bleaching test, and chelating ability. The methanolic extract was found to be more efficient, while the essential oil exhibited the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. Objective To investigate some pharmacological effects including gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and in vitro antioxidant effects of Artemisia herba-alba extract in different experimental models. Methods Inflammation was induced in rat paw by subcutaneous injection of 1% (v/v) carrageenan solution. Writhes was induced in mice by intraperitoneal injection of 0.6% (v/v) acetic acid solution. Pyrexia was induced using Brewer's yeast suspension. Gastric lesion was induced in rats by oral administration of 99% ethanol. Results The plant extract showed anti-inflammatory effect in carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats, analgesic effect against acetic acid-induced writhing, and antipyretic activity in Brewer's yeast model of pyrexia. Besides, it was shown to be a gastroprotective agent against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers. The plant also exhibited a free radical scavenging potential in an in vitro antioxidant study using DPPH.
