A reprint of the article "The Greening of Professional Services," by Stacey Foreman, which appeared in the August/September 2011 issue of "Government Procurement" is presented. Ways in which cities and counties in the U.S. can implement an environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) policy that covers professional services are discussed. Approaches to greening procurements for services from engineers, architects and others are also addressed.

Archiving project information was once merely a matter of collecting, organizing, and filing away paper drawings, each one created anew as design progressed. Chicago, Illlinois based architect Kristine Fallon, president of Kristine Fallon Associates, heads the project, which involves a team of architects, academics, museum curators, and technology experts who are reviewing the challenges of maintaining digital archives and will ultimately provide recommendations for best practices. To combat obsolescence of archival documents, a proposed global registry could alert architects to digital file types that are in danger of disappearing and provide a way for architects to reformat their files.

What sort of a home was Karl Munichreiter, the shoe- maker of Vienna, defending when they dragged him out heavily wounded, and, wounds and all, took him to the scaffold to be hanged? This article presents a biography of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Olmsted is remembered today as the father of U.S. landscape architecture. Central Park in New York is probably his best-known work, but he left many monuments to his greatness as an artist. He created lovely parks in the urban jungles of cities throughout the country, he designed university campuses from Yale to Stanford and California, and he fashioned dozens of other scenic landscapes, including Capitol Hill in Washington, D. C.

Several stellar Japanese architects recently converged on Manhattan, New York, for a symposium at the Japan Society called "Technology and Tradition in Contemporary Japanese Architecture," co-organized by the periodical "Architectural Record." The conference was launched with a lecture by Fumihiko Maki, recently appointed architect for a new United Nations building and a tower at Ground Zero. The focus then passed to younger architects, including Ware Kishi , Kengo Kuma, and the ebullient Jun Aoki. Aoki, Shigeru Ban and Kazuyo Sejima are rising architects. In thinking about a home, one might place on one side of the balance all the favorite desires. The average American would like his home capacious, comfortable, well serviced and in addition, how he would like to have it air-conditioned, not to say streamlined. The few people who are more subtle than the average want gardens, playgrounds for the children, security from traffic and distance from noise, and a sense of peace and ease. A home in such terms would arouse a feeling of desire all strive hard for luxuries, not necessities. Over against these desires, as the source of their satisfaction, stand the national resources, the factories, the workers, engineers, and planners who combine to make up the capacity of the plant. And in the U.S. this capacity is adequate. The housing movement began its attack on these irrelevant costs with what economies the technical ingenuity of planners and architects could devise in the field. To circumvent high land costs it devised better layouts, and against high construction costs it devised "large-scale operations."

Focuses on the progress of an architectural competition for rebuilding the World Trade Center in New York City. The live television and radio coverage of the December press conference, which was held in the recently restored Winter Garden of the World Financial Center, across the street from Ground Zero, allowed the general public a rare opportunity to witness how architects make their pitch.Daniel Libeskind's intense, theatrical proffer quickly cut to the emotional heart of the matter, beginning with his tale of arriving by ship in New York harbor as the son of Holocaust survivors, awed by the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline like generations of grateful immigrants before him. Though all the new Ground Zero proposals in one way or another demarcate the footprints of the Twin Towers, Libeskind's design is by far the most dramatic evocation of the disaster. As could have been foreseen, Norman Foster's scheme was technologically proficient, environmentally sensitive, sleekly finished, structurally logical, and more than a bit cold, a deficiency that he effectively countered with his persuasive presentation. If one predominant theme emerged from the presentations, it was not gardens in the sky or footprints on the ground, but immense--not to say insane--height. Five of the schemes would be taller than the World Trade Center, and four of them, including Libeskind's and Foster's, would become the tallest buildings in the world. Americans faith and innovative zeal swept away all obstacles and surmounted all difficulties. The American achievement shines out for all to see, an affluent society, an unparalleled military and economic strength, a school population of 59 million in a country of 204 million, scientific research that leads the world, a technology which has succeeded in putting man on the moon, and an abundance of consumer goods, as well as of writers, poets, artists, architects. In short, U.S. is a civilization, a culture, a way of life, and a way of looking at the world and the future.

Not long ago, some Aspen architects decided that the planting of more trees would be a good idea. Chicago, Illinois has long been a more vivid city architecturally than New York. There is even a heritage of architectural heroes there. One was Uncle Thin Burnham, who said, "make no little plans," and who, himself, made some grand ones. Optical reciprocities between ball and bleachers overwhelmingly determine the design of sports buildings. Architects typically derive the diagram for arenas from wrapping walls around optimal lines of sight to generate a box of a bowl. At Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois however, Boston architect Benjamin Wood, Carlos Zapata working with Lohan Caprile Goettsch as the master planner, recently broke free of convention, scoring an end run into new precedent.
