Abstract: International audience; In this study we investigate the exceptional wetting properties of thin polymer layers. Here the polymer is deposited in the form of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pseudo-brush and contact line dynamics are measured for both varying polymerization index and nature of the partially-wetting liquid. We use a custom-built experimental apparatus to explore wetting dynamics over 7 decades of velocity, with a precision of 0.01 • in variations of the contact angle. We show that the presence of a pseudo-brush can result in a remarkably small contact angle hysteresis as well as the appearance of an additional source of dissipation and that these two phenomena depend on the chain length and the wetting liquid. Qualitatively, we interpret these findings as the ability of the layer to behave as a liquid-like interface, and quantitatively by using a simple model of viscoelastic dissipation in soft thin films.

Abstract: Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides possess valley dependent functionalities that are usually available only at crogenic temperatures, constrained by various valley depolarization scatterings. The formation of exciton polaritons by coherently superimposing excitons and microcavity photons potentially harnesses the valley polarized polariton polariton interactions for novel valleytronics devices. Robust EPs have been demonstrated at room temperature in TMDs microcavity, however, the coherent polariton lasing and condensation remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time the realization of EP condensation in a TMD microcavity at room temperature. The continuous wave pumped EP condensation and lasing with ultralow thresholdsis evidenced by the macroscopic occupation of the ground state, that undergoes a nonlinear increase of the emission and a continuous blueshift, a build up of spatial coherence, and a detuning-controlled threshold. Our work presents a critically important step towards exploiting nonlinear polariton polariton interactions and polaritonic devices with valley functionality at room temperature., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Electron spins confined in quantum dots are an attractive system to realize high-fidelity qubits owing to their long coherence time. With the prolonged spin coherence time, however, the control fidelity can be limited by systematic errors rather than decoherence, making characterization and suppression of their influence crucial for further improvement. Here we report that the control fidelity of Si/SiGe spin qubits can be limited by the microwave-induced frequency shift of electric dipole spin resonance and it can be improved by optimization of control pulses. As we increase the control microwave amplitude, we observe a shift of the qubit resonance frequency, in addition to the increasing Rabi frequency. We reveal that this limits control fidelity with a conventional amplitude-modulated microwave pulse below 99.8%. In order to achieve a gate fidelity >99.9%, we introduce a quadrature control method, and validate this approach experimentally by randomized benchmarking. Our finding facilitates realization of an ultra-high-fidelity qubit with electron spins in quantum dots.

Abstract: When a signal is injected in a parametric oscillator close enough to its resonance, the oscillator frequency and phase get locked to those of the injected signal. Here, we demonstrate two frequency locking schemes using a Josephson mixer in the parametric down-conversion regime, pumped beyond the parametric oscillation threshold. The circuit then emits radiation out of two spectraly and spatially separated resonators at frequencies determined by the locking schemes that we choose. When we inject the signal close to a resonance, it locks the oscillator emission to the signal frequency by injection locking. When we inject the signal close to the difference of resonances, it locks the oscillator emission by parametric locking. We compare both schemes and investigate the dependence of the parametric locking range on the pump and the injection signal power. Our results can be interpreted using Adler's theory for lasers, which makes a new link between laser physics and superconducting circuits that could enable better understanding of pumped circuits for quantum information applications such as error correction, circulators and photon number detectors.

Abstract: [EN] Electrostatic gating is pervasive in materials science, yet its effects on the electronic band structure of materials has never been revealed directly by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), the technique of choice to noninvasively probe the electronic band structure of a material. By means of a state-of-the-art ARPES setup with submicron spatial resolution, we have investigated a heterostructure composed of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) on hexagonal boron nitride and deposited on a graphite flake. By voltage biasing the latter, the electric field effect is directly visualized on the valence band as well as on the carbon 1s core level of BLG. The band gap opening of BLG submitted to a transverse electric field is discussed and the importance of intra layer screening is put forward. Our results pave the way for new studies that will use momentum-resolved electronic structure information to gain insight on the physics of materials submitted to the electric field effect., ANR-14-CE08-018-05 funding “GoBN". Abstract: Although a hydrophobic microtexture at a solid surface most often reflects rain owing to the presence of entrapped air within the texture, it is much more challenging to repel hot water. As it contacts a colder material, hot water generates condensation within the cavities at the solid surface, which eventually builds bridges between the substrate and the water, and thus destroys repellency. Here we show that both “small” (~100 nm) and “large” (~10 µm) model features do reflect hot drops at any drop temperature and in the whole range of explored impact velocities. Hence, we can define two structural recipes for repelling hot water: drops on nanometric features hardly stick owing to the miniaturization of water bridges, whereas kinetics of condensation in large features is too slow to connect the liquid to the solid at impact., It has previously been reported that hot drops impacting on a colder surface can lead to loss of surface hydrophobicity unless the surface features are very small. Here the authors find that both small and large features but not intermediate ones are able to preserve hydrophobicity.

Abstract: Superconducting circuits are a versatile platform to implement a multitude of Hamiltonians which perform quantum computation, simulation and sensing tasks. A key ingredient for realizing a desired Hamiltonian is the irradiation of the circuit by a strong drive. These strong drives provide an in-situ control of couplings, which cannot be obtained by near-equilibrium Hamiltonians. However, as shown in this paper, out-of-equilibrium systems are easily plagued by complex dynamics leading to instabilities. Predicting and preventing these instabilities is crucial, both from a fundamental and application perspective. We propose an inductively shunted transmon as the elementary circuit optimized for strong parametric drives. Developing a novel numerical approach that avoids the built-in limitations of perturbative analysis, we demonstrate that adding the inductive shunt significantly extends the range of pump powers over which the circuit behaves in a stable manner., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: International audience; Surface Force Apparatus (SFA) allows to accurately resolve the interfacial properties of fluids confined between extended surfaces. The accuracy of the SFA makes it an ubiquitous tool for the nanoscale mechanical characterization of soft matter systems. The SFA traditionally measures force-distance profiles through interferometry with subnanometric distance precision. However, these techniques often require a dedicated and technically demanding experimental setup, and there remains a need for versatile and simple force-distance measurement tools. Here we present a MicroMegascope based dynamic Surface Force Apparatus capable of accurate measurement of the dynamic force profile of a liquid confined between a millimetric sphere and a planar substrate. Normal and shear mechanical impedance is measured within the classical Frequency Modulation framework. We measure rheological and frictional properties from micrometric to molecular confinement. We also highlight the resolution of small interfacial features such as ionic liquid layering. This apparatus shows promise as a versatile force-distance measurement device for exotic surfaces or extreme environments.

Abstract: Droplets merging on hydrophobic nanocones jump off, and the takeoff speed is found to be maximum at microscale, below and above which viscosity and inertia, respectively, cap this speed. Microdroplets successively experience strong lift off, slow flight, and smooth landing, which impedes bouncing.

Abstract: In this paper, we explore the effect of a finite surface charge mobility on the interfacial transport: conductance, streaming currents, electro- and diffusio-osmotic flows. We first show that the surface charge mobility modifies the hydrodynamic boundary condition for the fluid, which introduces a supplementary term depending on the applied electric field. In particular, the resulting slip length is found to decrease inversely with the surface charge. We then derive expressions for the various transport mobilities, high-lighting that the surface charge mobility merely moderates the amplification effect of interfacial slippage, to the noticeable exception of diffusio-osmosis and surface conductance. Our calculations, obtained within Poisson-Boltzmann framework, highlight the importance of non-linear electrostatic contributions to predict the small concentration/large charge limiting regimes for the transport mobilities. We discuss these predictions in the context of recent electrokinetic experiments with carbon nanotubes.

Abstract: International audience; Josephson circuits have been ideal systems with which to study complex nonlinear dynamics that can lead to chaotic behavior and instabilities. More recently, Josephson circuits in the quantum regime, particularly in the presence of microwave drives, have demonstrated their ability to emulate a variety of Hamiltonians that are useful for the processing of quantum information. In this paper, we show that these drives lead to an instability that results in the escape of the circuit mode into states that are not confined by the Josephson cosine potential. We observe this escape in a ubiquitous circuit: a transmon embedded in a 3D cavity. When the transmon occupies these free-particle-like states, the circuit behaves as though the junction had been removed and all nonlinearities are lost. This work deepens our understanding of strongly driven Josephson circuits, which is important for fundamental and application perspectives, such as the engineering of Hamiltonians by parametric pumping.

Abstract: Raman microscopy is a powerful method combining non-invasiveness with no special sample preparation. Because of this remarkable simplicity, it has been widely exploited in many fields, ranging from life and materials sciences to engineering. Notoriously, due to the required imaging speeds for bio-imaging, it has remained a challenge how to use this technique for dynamic and large-scale imaging. Recently, a supervised compressive Raman framework has been put forward, allowing for fast imaging, therefore alleviating the issue of speed. Yet, due to the need for strong a priori information of the species forming the hyperspectrum, it has remained elusive how to apply this supervised method for microspectroscopy of (dynamic) biological tissues. Combining an original spectral under-sampling measurement technique with a matrix completion framework for reconstruction, we demonstrate fast and inexpensive label-free molecular imaging of biological specimens (brain tissues and single cells). Using the matrix completion outcome with the supervised method allows for large compressions (64 × ) and bio-imaging speeds surpassing current technology in spontaneous Raman microspectroscopy. Therefore, our results open interesting perspectives for clinical and cell biology applications using the much faster compressive Raman framework.

Abstract: Single-spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots hold promise for universal quantum computation with demonstrations of a high single-qubit gate fidelity above 99.9% and two-qubit gates in conjunction with a long coherence time. However, initialization and readout of a qubit is orders of magnitude slower than control, which is detrimental for implementing measurement-based protocols such as error-correcting codes. In contrast, a singlet-triplet qubit, encoded in a two-spin subspace, has the virtue of fast readout with high fidelity. Here, we present a hybrid system which benefits from the different advantages of these two distinct spin-qubit implementations. A quantum interface between the two codes is realized by electrically tunable inter-qubit exchange coupling. We demonstrate a controlled-phase gate that acts within 5.5 ns, much faster than the measured dephasing time of 211 ns. The presented hybrid architecture will be useful to settle remaining key problems with building scalable spin-based quantum computers., The race to produce a quantum computer has driven the development of many different qubit designs with different benefits and drawbacks. Noiri et al. demonstrate a hybrid device with two coupled semiconductor spin qubits of different designs, which should allow each qubit’s advantages to be exploited.

Abstract: International audience; Current noise fluctuations have been investigated in terahertz (THz) quantum well photodetectors embedded in antenna-coupled photonic architectures and compared with standard substrate-coupled mesa detectors. The noise measurements give a value of the photoconductive gain that is in excellent agreement with that extracted from previous responsivity calibrations. Moreover, our results confirm that the noise equivalent power (NEP) of the antenna-coupled devices is of the order of 0.2 pW/Hz0.5. This low NEP value and the wide band frequency response (∼GHz) of the detectors are ideal figures for the development of heterodyne receivers that are, at present, a valuable technological solution to overcome the current limitation of THz sensors.

Abstract: Long-range coherent polariton condensate flow is observed in all-inorganic perovskite microcavities., Novel technological applications significantly favor alternatives to electrons toward constructing low power–consuming, high-speed all-optical integrated optoelectronic devices. Polariton condensates, exhibiting high-speed coherent propagation and spin-based behavior, attract considerable interest for implementing the basic elements of integrated optoelectronic devices: switching, transport, and logic. However, the implementation of this coherent polariton condensate flow is typically limited to cryogenic temperatures, constrained by small exciton binding energy in most semiconductor microcavities. Here, we demonstrate the capability of long-range nonresonantly excited polariton condensate flow at room temperature in a one-dimensional all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite microwire microcavity. The polariton condensate exhibits high-speed propagation over macroscopic distances of 60 μm while still preserving the long-range off-diagonal order. Our findings pave the way for using coherent polariton condensate flow for all-optical integrated logic circuits and polaritonic devices operating at room temperature.

Abstract: Glutamate is a major excitatory neurotransmitter, and impaired glutamate clearance following synaptic release promotes spillover, inducing extra-synaptic signaling. The effects of glutamate spillover on animal behavior and its neural correlates are poorly understood. We developed a glutamate spillover model in Caenorhabditis elegans by inactivating the conserved glial glutamate transporter GLT-1. GLT-1 loss drives aberrant repetitive locomotory reversal behavior through uncontrolled oscillatory release of glutamate onto AVA, a major interneuron governing reversals. Repetitive glutamate release and reversal behavior require the glutamate receptor MGL-2/mGluR5, expressed in RIM and other interneurons presynaptic to AVA. mgl-2 loss blocks oscillations and repetitive behavior; while RIM activation is sufficient to induce repetitive reversals in glt-1 mutants. Repetitive AVA firing and reversals require EGL-30/Gαq, an mGluR5 effector. Our studies reveal that cyclic autocrine presynaptic activation drives repetitive reversals following glutamate spillover. That mammalian GLT1 and mGluR5 are implicated in pathological motor repetition suggests a common mechanism controlling repetitive behaviors., Katz and colleagues examine glutamate spillover effects on C. elegans behaviour. They show that impaired synaptic glutamate clearance in glial glutamate transporter mutants, causes presynaptic mgl-2/mGluR5 activation, generating postsynaptic neural activity oscillations driving repetitive behaviour.

Abstract: Crackling noise, which occurs in a wide range of situations, is characterized by discrete events of various sizes, often correlated in the form of avalanches. We report experimental evidence that the mechanical response of a knitted fabric displays such broadly distributed events both in the force signal and in the deformation field, with statistics analogous to that of earthquakes or soft amorphous materials. A knit consists of a regular network of frictional contacts, linked by the elasticity of the yarn. When deformed, the fabric displays spatially extended avalanchelike yielding events resulting from collective interyarn contact slips. We measure the size distribution of these avalanches, at the stitch level from the analysis of nonelastic displacement fields and externally from force fluctuations. The two measurements yield consistent power law distributions reminiscent of those found in other avalanching systems. Our study shows that a knitted fabric is not only a thread-based metamaterial with highly sought after mechanical properties, but also an original, model system, with topologically protected structural order, where an intermittent, scale-invariant response emerges from minimal ingredients, and thus a significant landmark in the study of out-of-equilibrium universality.

19. Tunable quantum criticality and super-ballistic transport in a 'charge' Kondo circuit

Abstract: Quantum phase transitions are ubiquitous in many exotic behaviors of strongly-correlated materials. However the microscopic complexity impedes their quantitative understanding. Here, we observe thoroughly and comprehend the rich strongly-correlated physics in two profoundly dissimilar regimes of quantum criticality. With a circuit implementing a quantum simulator for the three-channel Kondo model, we reveal the universal scalings toward different low-temperature fixed points and along the multiple crossovers from quantum criticality. Notably, an unanticipated violation of the maximum conductance for ballistic free electrons is uncovered. Abstract: International audience; The formation of core-shell structures has permitted to improve greatly the emission properties of inorganic quantum dots. Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, thanks to their emission in the near infrared region, are promising materials for optoelectronics. However, the extreme sensitivity of nanotubes to their environment hinders their applications. Thus, the fabrication of tailor-made functional hybrid materials that preserve the optical properties of SWNTs and facilitate their manipulation is extremely important. Here, we describe the synthesis of core-shell nanotube materials made of SWNTs and polystyrene. We developed a two-step strategy that permits to form a stable and homogeneous layer of polymer around the nanotubes by adding first polystyrene via the micelle swelling method and then by locking the structure via radical polymerisation in micelles of styrene and divinylbenzene. After polymerisation and redispersion, the nanotube hybrids can be easily manipulated in solution; they still exhibited photoluminescence properties both in solution and in the solid state demonstrating that the SWNTs embedded in their polystyrene shell are isolated one from each other.

Abstract: Knitting is not only a mere art and craft hobby but also a thousand year old technology. Unlike weaving, it can produce loose yet extremely stretchable fabrics with almost vanishing rigidity, a desirable property exhibited by hardly any bulk material. It also enables the engineering of arbitrarily shaped two and three-dimensional objects with tunable mechanical response. In contrast with the extensive body of related empirical knowledge and despite a growing industrial interest, the physical ingredients underlying these intriguing mechanical properties remain poorly understood. To make some progress in this direction, we study a model tricot made of a single elastic thread knitted into the common pattern called \textit{stockinette}. On the one hand, we experimentally investigate its tensile response and measure local displacements of the stitches during deformation. On the other hand, we derive a first-principle mechanical model for the displacement field based on the yarn bending energy, the conservation of its total length and the topological constraints on the constitutive stitches. Our model solves both the shape and mechanical response of the knit and agrees quantitatively with our measurements. This study thus provides a fundamental framework for the understanding of knitted fabrics, paving the way to thread-based smart materials., Article: 15 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Elementary band representations are the fundamental building blocks of atomic limit band structures. They have the defining property that at partial filling they cannot be both gapped and trivial. Here, we give two examples -- one each in a symmorphic and a non-symmorphic space group -- of elementary band representations realized with an energy gap. In doing so, we explicitly construct a counterexample to a claim by Michel and Zak that single-valued elementary band representations in non-symmorphic space groups with time-reversal symmetry are connected. For each example, we construct a topological invariant to explicitly demonstrate that the valence bands are non-trivial. Abstract: The link between chemical orbitals described by local degrees of freedom and band theory, which is defined in momentum space, was proposed by Zak several decades ago for spinless systems with and without time-reversal in his theory of "elementary" band representations. In Nature 547, 298-305 (2017), we introduced the generalization of this theory to the experimentally relevant situation of spin-orbit coupled systems with time-reversal symmetry and proved that all bands that do not transform as band representations are topological. Here, we give the full details of this construction. We prove that elementary band representations are either connected as bands in the Brillouin zone and are described by localized Wannier orbitals respecting the symmetries of the lattice (including time-reversal when applicable), or, if disconnected, describe topological insulators. We then show how to generate a band representation from a particular Wyckoff position and determine which Wyckoff positions generate elementary band representations for all space groups. This theory applies to spinful and spinless systems, in all dimensions, with and without time reversal. We introduce a homotopic notion of equivalence and show that it results in a finer classification of topological phases than approaches based only on the symmetry of wavefunctions at special points in the Brillouin zone. Abstract: The conventional theory of solids is well suited to describing band structures locally near isolated points in momentum space, but struggles to capture the full, global picture necessary for understanding topological phenomena. In part of a recent paper [B. Bradlyn et al., Nature 547, 298 (2017)], we have introduced the way to overcome this difficulty by formulating the problem of sewing together many disconnected local "k-dot-p" band structures across the Brillouin zone in terms of graph theory. In the current manuscript we give the details of our full theoretical construction. We show that crystal symmetries strongly constrain the allowed connectivities of energy bands, and we employ graph-theoretic techniques such as graph connectivity to enumerate all the solutions to these constraints. The tools of graph theory allow us to identify disconnected groups of bands in these solutions, and so identify topologically distinct insulating phases., Comment: 19 pages. Abstract: We discuss a one-dimensional fermionic model with a generalized $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ even multiplet pairing extending Kitaev $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ chain. The system shares many features with models believed to host localized edge parafermions, the most prominent being a similar bosonized Hamiltonian and a $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ symmetry enforcing an $N$-fold degenerate ground state robust to certain disorder. Interestingly, we show that the system supports a pair of parafermions but they are non-local instead of being boundary operators. As a result, the degeneracy of the ground state is only partly topological and coexists with spontaneous symmetry breaking by a (two-particle) pairing field. Each symmetry-breaking sector is shown to possess a pair of Majorana edge modes encoding the topological twofold degeneracy. Surrounded by two band insulators, the model exhibits for $N=4$ the dual of an $8 \pi$ fractional Josephson effect highlighting the presence of parafermions., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: International audience; Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) allows to reconstruct the topography of surface with a resolution in the nanometer range. The exceptional resolution attainable with the AFM makes this instrument a key tool in nanoscience and technology. The core of the set-up relies on the detection of the mechanical properties of a micro-oscillator when approached to a sample to image. Despite the fact that AFM is nowadays a very common instrument for research and development applications, thanks to the exceptional performances and the relative simplicity to use it, the fabrication of the micrometric scale mechanical oscillator is still a very complicated and expensive task requiring a dedicated platform. Being able to perform atomic force microscopy with a macroscopic oscillator would make the instrument more versatile and accessible for an even larger spectrum of applications and audiences. We present for the first time atomic force imaging with a centimetric oscillator. We show how it is possible to perform topographical images with nanometric resolution with a grams tuning fork. The images presented here are obtained with an aluminum tuning fork of centimeter size as sensor on which an accelerometer is glued on one prong to measure the oscillation of the resonator. In addition to the stunning sensitivity, by imaging both in air and in liquid, we show the high versatility of such oscillator. The set up proposed here can be extended to numerous experiments where the probe needs to be heavy and/or very complex as well as the environment.

Abstract: By means of Shubnikov-de-Haas and de-Haas-van-Alphen oscillations, and ab initio calculations, we have studied the Fermi surface of high-quality BaNiS$_2$ single crystals, with mean free path $l \sim 400 ~\text{\AA}$. The angle and temperature dependence of quantum oscillations indicates a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, made of an electron-like tube centred at $\Gamma$, and of 4 hole-like cones, generated by Dirac bands, weakly dispersive in the out-of-plane direction. Ab initio electronic structure calculations, in the density functional theory framework, show that the inclusion of screened exchange is necessary to account for the experimental Fermi pockets. Therefore, the choice of the functional becomes crucial. A modified HSE hybrid functional with 7% of exact exchange outperforms both GGA and GGA+U density functionals, signalling the importance of non-local screened-exchange interactions in BaNiS$_2$, and, more generally, in $3d$ compensated semimetals., Comment: 8 figures

Abstract: At cryogenic temperatures, the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of nano-emitters may still be significantly broadened due to interactions with the environment. The interplay of spectral diffusion (SD) and phonon broadening in this context is still a debated issue. Singlewall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are a particularly relevant system to address this topic as they show intense spectral diffusion and undergo a high exciton-phonon coupling due to their one-dimensional geometry. Here, we investigate the correlations between the spectral diffusion of the main line and that of the wings in SWNTs quantitatively and demonstrate that the photoluminescence spectrum undergoes spectral jumps as a whole, without distortions. This behavior suggests that the spectral shape of SWNT PL is defined by exciton-phonon interactions and that spectral diffusion results in an additional flat broadening. The methodology developed here can be used to investigate a broad range of non-Lorentzian emitters undergoing spectral diffusion.

Abstract: We discuss a network of Kitaev wires coupled to several individually-tunable quantum dots as an extension of the recent experiments on a quantum dot coupled to a nanowire hosting Majorana zero modes [Deng et al. Science 354 1557 (2016) and Deng et al. arXiv:1712.03536 (2017)]. The setup features localized Majorana modes with exact zero energy and we show that they can be manipulated by solely acting on the quantum dots. A braiding process can be obtained by arranging three wires as a trijunction and a charge readout of the quantum dots can be used to reveal the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana zero modes. Abstract: Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is commonly associated with an electric field approaching the inter Landau-level (LL) Zener field, ratio of the Landau gap and cyclotron radius. Eluded in semiconducting heterostructures, in spite of extensive investigation, the intrinsic Zener limit is reported here using high-mobility bilayer graphene and high-frequency current noise. We show that collective excitations arising from electron-electron interactions are essential. Beyond a noiseless ballistic QHE regime a large superpoissonian shot noise signals the breakdown via inter-LL scattering. The breakdown is ultimately limited by collective excitations in a regime where phonon and impurity scattering are quenched. The breakdown mechanism can be described by a Landau critical velocity as it bears strong similarities with the roton mechanism of superfluids., 13 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Bipartite fluctuations can provide interesting information about entanglement properties and correlations in many-body quantum systems. We address such fluctuations in relation with the topology of Dirac and Weyl quantum systems, in situations where the relevant particle number is not conserved, leading to additional volume laws scaling with the Quantum Fisher information. Through the example of the $p+ip$ superconductor, we build a relation between charge fluctuations and the associated winding numbers of Dirac cones in the low-energy sector. Topological aspects of the Hamiltonian in the vicinity of these points induce long-range entanglement in real space. Abstract: It is well established that topological insulators sustain Dirac fermion surface states as a consequence of band inversion in the bulk. These states have a helical spin polarization and a linear dispersion with large Fermi velocity. In this article we report on a set of experimental observations indicating the existence of massive surface states. These states are confined at the interface and dominate equilibrium and transport properties at high energy and/or high electric field. By monitoring the AC admittance of HgTe topological insulator field-effect capacitors, we access the compressibility and conductivity of surface states in a broad range of energy and electric fields. The Dirac surface states are characterized by a compressibility minimum, a linear energy dependence and a high mobility persisting up to energies much larger than the transport bandgap of the bulk. New features are revealed at high energies with signatures such as conductance peaks, compressibility bumps, a strong charge metastability and a Hall resistance anomaly. These features point to the existence of excited massive surface states, responsible for a strong intersubband scattering with the Dirac states and the nucleation of metastable bulk carriers. The spectrum of excited states agrees with predictions of a phenomenological model of the topological-trivial semiconductor interface. The model accounts for the finite interface depth and the effect of electric fields. The existence of excited topological states is essential for the understanding of topological phases and opens a route for engineering and exploiting topological resources in quantum technology., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We show that a smooth interface between two insulators of opposite topological Z2 indices possesses multiple surface states, both massless and massive. While the massless surface state is non-degenerate, chiral and insensitive to the interface potential, the massive surface states only appear for a sufficiently smooth heterojunction. The surface states are particle-hole symmetric and a voltage drop reveals their intrinsic relativistic nature, similarly to Landau bands of Dirac electrons in a magnetic field. Abstract: Nanometre-scale features with special shapes impart a broad spectrum of unique properties to the surface of insects. These properties are essential for the animal's survival, and include the low light reflectance of moth eyes, the oil repellency of springtail carapaces and the ultra-adhesive nature of palmtree bugs. Antireflective mosquito eyes and cicada wings are also known to exhibit some antifogging and self-cleaning properties. In all cases, the combination of small feature size and optimal shape provides exceptional surface properties. In this work, we investigate the underlying antifogging mechanism in model materials designed to mimic natural systems, and explain the importance of the texture's feature size and shape. While exposure to fog strongly compromises the water-repellency of hydrophobic structures, this failure can be minimized by scaling the texture down to nanosize. This undesired effect even becomes non-measurable if the hydrophobic surface consists of nanocones, which generate antifogging efficiency close to unity and water departure of droplets smaller than 2 μm.

Abstract: Engineering of cooling mechanisms is a bottleneck in nanoelectronics. Whereas thermal exchanges in diffusive graphene are mostly driven by defect assisted acoustic phonon scattering, the case of high-mobility graphene on hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) is radically different with a prominent contribution of remote phonons from the substrate. A bi-layer graphene on hBN transistor with local gate is driven in a regime where almost perfect current saturation is achieved by compensation of the decrease of the carrier density and Zener-Klein tunneling (ZKT) at high bias. Using noise thermometry, we show that this Zener-Klein tunneling triggers a new cooling pathway due to the emission of hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPP) in hBN by out-of-equilibrium electron-hole pairs beyond the super-Planckian regime. The combination of ZKT-transport and HPP-cooling promotes graphene on BN transistors as a valuable nanotechnology for power devices and RF electronics., 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The past decade's apparent success in predicting and experimentally discovering distinct classes of topological insulators (TIs) and semimetals masks a fundamental shortcoming: out of 200,000 stoichiometric compounds extant in material databases, only several hundred of them are topologically nontrivial. Are TIs that esoteric, or does this reflect a fundamental problem with the current piecemeal approach to finding them? To address this, we propose a new and complete electronic band theory that highlights the link between topology and local chemical bonding, and combines this with the conventional band theory of electrons. Topological Quantum Chemistry is a description of the universal global properties of all possible band structures and materials, comprised of a graph theoretical description of momentum space and a dual group theoretical description in real space. We classify the possible band structures for all 230 crystal symmetry groups that arise from local atomic orbitals, and show which are topologically nontrivial. We show how our topological band theory sheds new light on known TIs, and demonstrate the power of our method to predict a plethora of new TIs., Comment: v1: 8 pages + 40 pages supplemenetary material. Abstract: No experiment could directly test the particle/antiparticle duality of Majorana fermions, so far. However, this property represents a necessary ingredient towards the realization of topological quantum computing schemes. Here, we show how to complete this task by using microwave techniques. The direct coupling between a pair of overlapping Majorana bound states and the electric field from a microwave cavity is extremely difficult to detect due to the self-adjoint character of Majorana fermions which forbids direct energy exchanges with the cavity. We show theoretically how this problem can be circumvented by using photo-assisted tunneling to fermionic reservoirs. The absence of direct microwave transition inside the Majorana pair in spite of the light-Majorana coupling would represent a smoking gun for the Majorana self-adjoint character., 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: At small momenta, the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) mode in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect can be identified with gapped nematic fluctuations in the isotropic FQH liquid. This correspondence would be exact as the GMP mode softens upon approach to the putative point of a quantum phase transition to a FQH nematic. Motivated by these considerations as well as by suggestive evidence of an FQH nematic in tilted field experiments, we have sought evidence of such a nematic FQHE in a microscopic model of interacting electrons in the lowest Landau level at filling factor 1/3. Using a family of anisotropic Laughlin states as trial wave functions, we find a continuous quantum phase transition between the isotropic Laughlin liquid and the FQH nematic. Abstract: Summary Negative gas adsorption by a porous crystalline solid, DUT-49, observed by spontaneous desorption of gas during a pressure increase raises fundamental questions on the physical origin of this puzzling behavior. Importantly, a framework that can transform a large amount of strain into pressure has many possible technological applications. To address this question, we studied the mechanics and thermodynamics of DUT-49 at both the molecular unit and framework scales by applying quantum density functional theory and extensive classical molecular-dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that negative gas adsorption originates from molecular buckling of the organic structural unit and thus allows a colossal framework transformation. Methane adsorption is subsequently shown to activate this transition, in full agreement with experimental observations. The molecular insight presented here unveils the mechanics and thermodynamics responsible for negative gas adsorption and provides unparalleled understanding to aid the discovery of new examples of similarly responsive porous metamaterials.

Abstract: We investigated optical spin orientation and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in individual self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) doped by a single Mn atom, a magnetic impurity providing a neutral acceptor A$^0$ with an effective spin $J=1$. We find that the spin of an electron photo-created in such a quantum dot can be efficiently oriented by a quasi-resonant circularly-polarized excitation. For the electron spin levels which are made quasi-degenerate by a magnetic field compensating the exchange interaction $\Delta_e$ with A$^0$, there is however a full depolarization due the anisotropic part of the exchange. Still, in most studied QDs, the spin polarized photo-electrons give rise to a pronounced DNP which grows with a longitudinal magnetic field until a critical field where it abruptly vanishes. For some QDs, several replica of such DNP sequence are observed at different magnetic fields. This striking behavior is qualitatively discussed as a consequence of different exchange interactions experienced by the electron, driving the DNP rate via the energy cost of electron-nucleus spin flip-flops., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: International audience; Terahertz (THz) and sub-THz frequency emitter and detector technologies are receiving increasing attention, underpinned by emerging applications in ultra-fast THz physics, frequency-combs technology and pulsed laser development in this relatively unexplored region of the electromagnetic spectrum. In particular, semiconductor-based ultrafast THz receivers are required for compact, ultrafast spectroscopy and communication systems, and to date, quantum-well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs) have proved to be an excellent technology to address this, given their intrinsic picosecond-range response. However, with research focused on diffraction-limited QWIP structures (λ∕2), RC constants cannot be reduced indefinitely, and detection speeds are bound to eventually meet an upper limit. The key to an ultra-fast response with no intrinsic upper limit even at tens of gigahertz (GHz) is an aggressive reduction in device size, below the diffraction limit. Here we demonstrate sub-wavelength (λ∕10) THz QWIP detectors based on a 3D split-ring geometry, yielding ultra-fast operation at a wavelength of around 100 μm. Each sensing meta-atom pixel features a suspended loop antenna that feeds THz radiation in the ∼20 μm 3 active volume (V eff ∼3 × 10 −4 λ∕2 3). Arrays of detectors as well as single-pixel detectors have been implemented with this new architecture, with the latter exhibiting ultra-low dark currents below the nA level. This extremely small resonator architecture leads to measured optical response speeds-on arrays of 300 devices-of up to ∼3 GHz and an expected device operation of up to tens of GHz, based on the measured S parameters on single devices and arrays.

Abstract: International audience; Music is a form of art interweaving people of all walks of life. Through subtle changes in frequencies, a succession of musical notes forms a melody which is capable of mesmerizing the minds of people. With the advances in technology, we are now able to generate music electronically without relying solely on physical instruments. Here, we demonstrate a musical interpretation of droplet-based microfluidics as a form of novel electronic musical instruments. Using the interplay of electric field and hydrodynamics in microfluidic devices, well controlled frequency patterns corresponding to musical tracks are generated in real time. This high-speed modulation of droplet frequency (and therefore of droplet sizes) may also provide solutions that reconciles high-throughput droplet production and the control of individual droplet at production which is needed for many biochemical or material synthesis applications.

Abstract: International audience; Pressure-controlled displacement of an oil-water interface is studied in dense packings of functionalized glass beads with well-defined spatial wettability correlations. An enhanced dissipation is observed if the typical extension ξ of the same-type wetting domains is smaller than the average bead diameter d. Three-dimensional imaging using x-ray microtomography shows that the frequencies nðsÞ of residual droplet volumes s for different ξ collapse onto the same curve. This indicates that the additional dissipation for small ξ is due to contact line pinning rather than an increase of capillary break-up and coalescence events.

Abstract: Using scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction, we report on the long range spatial self-organization of four Au(lll) vicinal surfaces. It is shown that the atomic structure of steps strongly affects the long range ordered morphology: periods on surfaces misoriented towards the [2 (1) over bar (1) over bar] azimuthal direction are about 100 A; whereas quasi-periods are about 2000 Angstrom when surfaces are misoriented towards the opposite azimuth. Abstract: LEED observations on nitrogen adsorbed on (h11) stepped and (100) copper faces have shown the existence of two surface phases with a first order transition. The first one corresponds, on the (100) face, to the formation of an ordered stepped overlayer composed of alternating square c(2 × 2)N island and bare copper of 〈100〉 atomic rows and on the (h11) stepped faces, to an unusual nitrogen induced faceting into (100) and (h′11) facets: the terrace width of these (h′11) facets decreases with coverages and a (h11) stepped face (h = 65 ± 4) with large (100) terrace widths is observed. The second phase, in the ultimate state of adsorption might correspond to the formation of a copper nitride surface layer in epitaxy on all the copper faces under investigation.

Abstract: The adsorption of Pb on Cu(100) from 0 to 1 ML was investigated by UHV scanning tunneling microscopy. We obtained atomic resolution images of the different superstructures which appear at 300 K with increasing coverage (c(4 x 4), c(2 x 2) and c(5 root 2 x root 2)R45 degrees). We confirm recent results and propose, partly on the basis of low temperature studies, new arguments in favour of an incorporation of lead atoms in the surface layer of copper for low coverage. We demonstrate that the c(4 x 4) superstructure corresponds to an ordered surface alloy of Pb3Cu4 composition, by investigating separately the alloying and de-alloying transitions. De-alloying occurs during the first-order transition between the c(4 x 4) and c(2 x 2) superstructures.

Abstract: Using scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction, the thermal faceting of two Au(111) vicinal surfaces belonging to the [01 1 ] zone is investigated. Above 700 K, a final stable state is found: it consists of a periodic succession of (111) and (755) facets. The superperiod is 70 A for Au(1199) and 110 A for Au(433). The quantitative agreement between our results and the observations of macroscopic gold crystals strongly suggests that the novel periodic morphology is an equilibrium state. Possible origins to account for this morphology are discussed.

Abstract: We report on the resonant optical pumping of the |\pm1> spin states of a single Mn dopant in an InAs/GaAs quantum dot embedded itself in a charge tuneable device. The experiment relies on a "W" scheme of transitions reached when a suitable longitudinal magnetic field is applied. The optical pumping is achieved via the resonant excitation of the central �� system at the neutral exciton X0 energy. For a specific gate voltage, the red-shifted photoluminescence of the charged exciton X- is observed, which allows non-destructive readout of the spin polarization. An arbitrary spin preparation in the |+1> or |-1> state characterized by a polarization near or above 50% is evidenced., 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: International audience; Using swelling hydrogels, we study the evolution of a thin circular artificial tumor whose growth is confined at the periphery. When the volume of the outer proliferative ring increases, the tumor loses its initial symmetry and bifurcates towards an oscillatory shape. Depending on the geometrical and elastic parameters, we observe either a smooth large-wavelength undulation of the swelling layer or the formation of sharp creases at the free boundary. Our experimental results as well as previous observations from other studies are in very good agreement with a nonlinear poroelastic model.
