A combined cyclic voltammetry (CV) and grazing angle attenuated total reflectance (GA-ATR) IR study on the interchain interaction driven reorganization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in an electric field was presented. The study focused on an N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-mercaptopropanamide (NMPA) SAM endowed with interchain hydrogen bonding, strongly affected by an external electric field interacting with the dipole moment associated with the hydrogen bonding. Conversely, a 1-hexanethiol SAM was characterized by interchain hydrophobic interaction not affected by the applied field. These features were demonstrated by means of reiterated CV experiments involving an electroactive negatively charged probe, namely Fe(CN)64−, and a Au-SAM serving as a working electrode. The diffusional/interpenetration and kinetics parameters provided the apparent electron transfer rate constant (k0) values. For the NMPA, the interchain rearrangement kinetics was that of an ion-permeable layer that reached, in the electric field, a steady-state configuration after about 50 minutes. The 1-hexanethiol chains’ reorganization exhibited more complex kinetics involving a first phase (ca. 50 minutes) of an ion-permeable phase followed by a sharp decrease in the anodic peak current related to the tightening of the structure, likely due to the interchain hydrophobic interaction, hindering ion diffusion. The change in the SAM structure upon cycling in the electric field was confirmed by the GA-ATR measurements.

Thiolated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are typically used to anchor on a gold surface biomolecules serving as recognition elements for biosensor applications. Here, the design and synthesis of N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-mercaptopropanamide (NMPA) in biotinylated mixed SAMs is proposed as an alternative strategy with respect to on-site multistep functionalization of SAMs prepared from solutions of commercially available thiols. In this study, the mixed SAM deposited from a 10:1 solution of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3MPA) and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11MUA) is compared to that resulting from a 10:1 solution of NMPA:11MUA. To this end, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) experiments have been carried out on both mixed SAMs after biotinylation. The study demonstrated how the fine tuning of the SAM features impacts directly on both the biofunctionalization steps, i.e., the biotin anchoring, and the biorecognition properties evaluated upon exposure to streptavidin analyte. Higher affinity for the target analyte with reduced nonspecific binding and lower detection limit has been demonstrated when NMPA is chosen as the more abundant starting thiol. Molecular dynamics simulations complemented the experimental findings providing a molecular rationale behind the performance of the biotinylated mixed SAMs. The present study confirms the importance of the functionalization design for the development of a highly performing biosensor.

Early diagnosis of the infection caused by human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) is vital to achieve efficient therapeutic treatment and limit the disease spreading when the viremia is at its highest level. To this end, a point-of-care HIV-1 detection carried out with label-free, low-cost, and ultra-sensitive screening technologies would be of great relevance. Herein, a label-free single molecule detection of HIV-1 p24 capsid protein with a large (wide-field) single-molecule transistor (SiMoT) sensor is proposed. The system is based on an electrolyte-gated field-effect transistor whose gate is bio-functionalized with the antibody against the HIV-1 p24 capsid protein. The device exhibits a limit of detection of a single protein and a limit of quantification in the 10 molecule range. This study paves the way for a low-cost technology that can quantify, with single-molecule precision, the transition of a biological organism from being “healthy” to being “diseased” by tracking a target biomarker. This can open to the possibility of performing the earliest possible diagnosis. The emerging problem of the antibiotic resistance development and the consequences that the health, food and other sectors face stimulate researchers to find safe and effective alternative methods to fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and biofilm formation. One of the most promising and efficient groups of materials known for robust antimicrobial performance is noble metal nanoparticles. Notably, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been already widely investigated and applied as antimicrobial agents. However, it has been proposed to create synergistic composites, because pathogens can find their way to develop resistance against metal nanophases; therefore, it could be important to strengthen and secure their antipathogen potency. These complex materials are comprised of individual components with intrinsic antimicrobial action against a wide range of pathogens. One part consists of inorganic AgNPs, and the other, of active organic molecules with pronounced germicidal effects: both phases complement each other, and the effect might just be the sum of the individual effects, or it can be reinforced by the simultaneous application. Many organic molecules have been proposed as potential candidates and successfully united with inorganic counterparts: polysaccharides, with chitosan being the most used component; phenols and organic acids; and peptides and other agents of animal and synthetic origin. In this review, we overview the available literature and critically discuss the findings, including the mechanisms of action, efficacy and application of the silver-based synergistic antimicrobial composites. Hence, we provide a structured summary of the current state of the research direction and give an opinion on perspectives on the development of hybrid Ag-based nanoantimicrobials (NAMs).

In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants was investigated using Ag/ZnS nanoparticles at different noble metal loadings. The photocatalysts were prepared at room temperature by two different methods: photodeposition and chemical reduction. The obtained samples were characterized by Specific surface area measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray Powder diffraction, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra showed that Ag is present on ZnS surface as intermediate state between nanostructured Ag0 and Ag2O. Moreover, the addition of silver caused a significant change of the absorption spectrum of bare ZnS, resulting in higher absorbance in the visible region, due to the Ag surface plasmon band. Methylene blue (MB) was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples. The best photocatalytic activity was observed using the sample at 0.1 wt% Ag loading prepared by chemical reduction method. In particular, the almost complete MB degradation was achieved using UV-LEDs as light sources and 6 g L−1 of catalyst dosage. Finally, the optimized photocatalyst was also effective in the degradation of phenol in aqueous solution under UV irradiation.

Silver nanoparticles synthesized using laser ablation synthesis in isopropanol, in absence of additional capping agents, were found to be stable with respect to both aggregation and silver oxidation over several months. The rationale for this extreme stability of metal nanoparticles suspended in organic solvents was challenging. On the basis of theoretical considerations and basic experiments it is proposed that the stabilization of silver nanoparticles involves the formation of an organic coating generated by the interaction of isopropanol molecules with the pulsed, high-energy laser beam. This coating prevents, on the one hand, any chemical reaction on colloidal nanoparticles (e.g. silver oxidation); on the other hand, the presence of the organic shell with a nature akin to that of the organic solvent led to weaker Van der Walls interactions between approaching nanoparticles enabling a larger stability than for naked metallic nanoparticles.

Herein electrosynthesized ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) agents to largely improve functional bio-interlayer organic field-effect transistor (FBI-OFET) biosensors stability are investigated. For a proof-of-principle, streptavidin (SA) was chosen as the capturing biomolecule to sense biotin and poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) served as channel material. The ZnO NPs were prepared and integrated into the FBI-OFET architecture by means of a straightforward and versatile procedure. To this end, ZnO NPs were mixed with an SA solution and the resulting aqueous suspension was readily spin-coated onto the SiO2 gate dielectric. The P3HT film was spin-coated on the SA-ZnO NPs layer afterwards with the whole fabrication procedure taking no more than 30 min. The FBI-OFET biosensors bearing the ZnO NPs exhibited a shelf life exceeding one year, while the bare ones failed to work after few weeks. Moreover, the ZnO NPs enabled a two orders of magnitude increase in field-effect mobility while the already proven very good sensing performances were retained. The electrical and XPS characterization of the ZnO NPs based functional bio-interlayer provided information about the role of the nanostructured oxide on the improved device stability and a plausible mechanism for this occurrence is derived accordingly.

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) made of gold, silver, and platinum have been synthesized by means of pulsed laser ablation in liquid aqueous solution. Independently from the metal nature, all NPs have an average diameter of 10 &plusmn, 5 nm. The &zeta, potential values are: &minus, 62 &plusmn, 7 mV for gold, &minus, 44 &plusmn, 2 mV for silver and &minus, 58 &plusmn, 3 for platinum. XPS analysis demonstrates the absence of metal oxides in the case of gold and silver NPs. In the case of platinum NPs, 22% of the particle surface is ascribed to platinum oxidized species. This points to a marginal role of the metal oxides in building the negative charge that stabilizes these colloidal suspensions. The investigation of the colloidal stability of gold NPs in the presence of metal cations shows these NPs can be destabilized by trace amounts of selected metal ions. The case of Ag+ is paradigmatic since it is able to reduce the NP &zeta, potential and to induce coagulation at concentrations as low as 3 &mu, M, while in the case of K+ the critical coagulation concentration is around 8 mM. It is proposed that such a huge difference in destabilization power between monovalent cations can be accounted for by the difference in the reduction potential.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are widely applied materials, and are also capable of antimicrobial action. They can be obtained by several methods, which include physical and chemical approaches. Considering the recent rise of green and low-cost synthetic routes for nanomaterial development, electrochemical techniques represent a valid alternative to biogenic synthesis. Following a hybrid electrochemical-thermal method modified by our group, here we report on the aqueous electrosynthesis of ZnO nanomaterials based on the use of alternative stabilizers. We tested both benzyl-hexadecyl-dimetylammonium chloride (BAC) and poly-diallyl-(dimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA). Transmission electron microscopy images showed the formation of rod-like and flower-like structures with a variable aspect-ratio. The combination of UV&ndash, Vis, FTIR and XPS spectroscopies allowed for the univocal assessment of the material composition as a function of different thermal treatments. In fact, the latter guaranteed the complete conversion of the as-prepared colloidal materials into stoichiometric ZnO species without excessive morphological modification. The antimicrobial efficacy of both materials was tested against Bacillus subtilis as a Gram-positive model microorganism.

Several three-terminal organic bioelectronic structures have been proposed so far to address the needs for a variety of biosensing applications. The most popular ones utilized organic field-effect transistors operated in an electrolyte, to detect both proteins and genomic analytes. They are endowed with selectivity by immobilizing a layer of bio-recognition elements. These features along with the foreseen low-cost for their production, make them very appealing for point-of-care biomedical applications. However, organic bioelectronic transistors do not always exhibit a performance level beyond state-of-the-art electrochemical sensors, which have been dominating the field for decades. This review offers a perspective view based on a systematic comparison between the potentiometric and amperometric electrochemical sensors and their organic bioelectronic transistor counterparts. The key-relevant aspects of the sensing mechanisms are reviewed for both, and when the mathematical analytical expression is actually available, the amplification factors are reported as the ratio between the response of a rationally designed transistor (or amplifying circuit) and that of a homologous electrochemical sensor. The functional dependence of the bioelectronic sensor responses on the concentration of the species to be detected enabling their correct analytical quantification, is also addressed.

Organic bioelectronic sensors based on an electrolyte gated field-effect transistor are gaining momentum due to their extraordinary high-performance level that enables label-free selective single-molecule detection of both genomic and protein biomarkers with a millimeter-wide electrolyte-gated field-effect transistor (EGOFET) device. The organic semiconductor channel material used so far is a spin-coated regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Of paramount importance is to design an EGOFET sensor that is stable and cost-effective. To address the latter feature, an ink-jet printed regio-regular P3HT film is here investigated as the channel material. Moreover, the EGOFET device structure is intended to comprise a coplanar lateral gate electrode that enables mechanical and electrical stability. Overall, the structure is compatible with large area processing so it can be fabricated at low-costs and can be operated continuously for eight days. Additionally, systematic optical and Raman characterization of the P3HT film proves that the printing process results in a film with a low energetic disorder (better π–π stacking in the crystalline regions) that likely enables stable operation. However, the higher quality crystalline regions (as compared to a spin-coated film) are dispersed in a more significant fraction of the amorphous disordered material with a larger amount of trap states. The higher crystalline order is ascribed to the higher boiling point and slower evaporation of the ortho-dichlorobenzene solvent used in the printing process. Overall, the present study provides a systematic insight into the structure–property correlations, essential to design a well-functioning and cost-effective EGOFET for high-performance electronic biosensing. It also provides one of the few investigations comparing the features characterizing a spin-coated and an ink-jet printed P3HT film.

This work decribes the enhancement of the electrical figures of merit of an Electrolyte Gated Thin-Film Transistor (EG-TFT) comprising a nanocomposite of n-type tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes (NTs) dispersed in a regio-regular p-type poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) polymeric matrix. P3HT/WS2 nanocomposites loaded with different concentrations of NTs, serving as EG-TFTs electronic channel materials have been studied and the formulation has been optimized. The resulting EG-TFTs figures of merit (field-effect mobility, threshold voltage and on-off ratio) are compared with those of the device comprising a bare P3HT semiconducting layer. The optimized P3HT/WS2 nanocomposite, comprising a 60% by weight of NTs, results in an improvement of all the elicited figures of merit with a striking ten-fold increase in the field-effect mobility and the on/off ratio along with a sizable enhancement of the in-water operational stability of the device.

The analytical performance of bioelectronic devices is highly influenced by their fabrication methods. In particular, the final architecture of field-effect transistor biosensors combining spin-cast poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film and a biomolecule interlayer deposited on a SiO2/Si substrate can lead to the development of highly performing sensing systems, such as for the case of streptavidin (SA) used for biotin sensing. To gain a better understanding of the quality of the interfacial area, critical is the assessment of the morphological features characteristic of the adopted biolayer deposition protocol, namely: the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach and the spin coating technique. The present study relies on a combined surface spectroscopic and morphological characterization. Specifically, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy operated in the parallel angle-resolved mode allowed the non-destructive investigation of the in-depth chemical composition of the SA film, alone or in the presence of the P3HT overlayer. Spectroscopic data were supported and corroborated by the results obtained with a Scanning Electron and a Helium Ion microscope investigation performed on the SA layer that provided relevant information on the protein structural arrangement or on its surface morphology. Clear differences emerged between the SA layers prepared by the two approaches, with the layer-by-layer deposition resulting in a smoother and better defined bio-electronic interface. Such findings support the superior analytical performance shown by bioelectronic devices based on LbL-deposited protein layers over spin coated ones. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Surface colonization by microorganisms leads to the formation of biofilms, i.e. aggregates of bacteria embedded within a matrix of extracellular polymeric substance. This promotes adhesion to the surface and protects bacterial community, providing an antimicrobial-resistant environment. The inhibition of biofilm growth is a crucial issue for preventing bacterial infections. Inorganic nanoparticle/Teflon-like (CFx) composites deposited via ion beam sputtering demonstrated very efficient antimicrobial activity. In this study, we developed Ag-CFx thin films with tuneable metal loadings and exceptional in-plane morphological and chemical homogeneity. Ag-CFx antimicrobial activity was studied via mid-infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy utilizing specifically adapted multi-reflection waveguides. Biofilm was sampled by carefully depositing the Ag-CFx film on IR inactive regions of the waveguide. Real-time infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilm growth inhibition induced by the bioactive silver ions released from the nanoantimicrobial coating. Few hours of Ag-CFx action were sufficient to affect significantly biofilm growth. These findings were corroborated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies on living bacteria exposed to the same nanoantimicrobial. Morphological analyses showed a severe bacterial stress, leading to membrane leakage/collapse or to extended cell lysis as a function of incubation time.

ZnO nanoparticles were prepared with a green, cheap, and easy aqueous electrochemical process. The electrolyte was made of a stabilizing cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) dissolved in NaHCO3 at pH = 8. The electrosynthesis was carried out galvanostatically at 10 mA/cm2, at room temperature or at 80 °C for 1 h. Gel-like pristine colloids, made of mixed Zn carbonates and hydroxides, underwent post-synthesis thermal treatments to allow a compete conversion to ZnO. Calcination was carried out at 300 or 600 °C for 1 h. All nanomaterials were characterized at each step of their production by transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis, infrared (FT–IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Electrochemical synthesis at 80 °C followed by calcination at 300 °C for 1 h allowed preparing ZnO submicron structures with good morphology and stoichiometry.

The application of metals and metal oxides in the form of nanostructured antimicrobials is continuously expanding. In the last decades, especially Cu-, ZnO- and Ag-based nano-antimicrobials have attracted the interest of scientists and technologists, as assessed by the huge amount of reports on the synthesis and characterization of nanosized bioactive materials. In fact, despite numerous and strong antibiotics nowadays available, infections caused by antimicrobial resistant bacteria are still a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Consequently, attention has been devoted to the development of nanoparticle-based antimicrobial agents: several classes of antimicrobial nanoparticles (NPs) and nanosized carriers for antibiotics delivery have proven their effectiveness for treating infectious diseases, including antibiotic resistant ones, in vitro as well as in animal models. The present review discusses the recent advances in synthesis, characterization, and application of Cu-, ZnO-, and Ag-based nano-antimicrobials, along with a brief mention of nanotoxicology issues.

Electrolyte-gated graphene field-effect transistors are here proposed for biosensing applications. To this end, a label-free immunosensor based on this technology is employed for the sensitive and selective detection of IgG. Differently from the typical approach based on the bioreceptor immobilization onto a graphene layer, in this work sensitivity in the lower femtomolar range can be reached thanks to the formation of a closely packed layer of anti-IgG receptors anchored to the gold gate electrode.

In the last decade, saliva has been suggested as non-invasive diagnostic fluid, suitable for clinical use alternatively to blood serum and plasma. However, the clinical applicability of saliva has been hampered so far by the inadequate sensitivity of current methods to detect the lower salivary concentrations of many biomarkers monitored in blood products. Herein, a label-free biosensor based on electrolyte-gated organic thin-film transistor (EGOTFT) has been developed for the detection at the physical limit of C-reactive protein (CRP) in human saliva. CRP is a key relevant biomarker for inflammatory processes and is routinely monitored for many clinical purposes. Herein, an electrolyte-gated thin-film transistor (EGOTFT) has been proposed as a transducer of the biorecognition event taking place at the gate electrode, functionalized with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of highly densely packed capturing anti-CRP proteins. Thanks to the SAM, the biosensing platform herein proposed is endowed with ultra-high sensitivity, along with an extremely high selectivity, assessed by measuring the dose curves of CRP interacting with a bovine serum albumin-functionalized gate. Moreover, the biosensing platform is compatible with low-cost fabrication techniques and applicable to the ultra-sensitive detection of a plethora of clinically relevant biomarkers. Therefore, the EGOTFT device herein proposed, being able to operate in physiologically relevant fluids such as saliva, will set the ground to a major revolution in biosensing applications for early clinical detection.

This paper explores the conditions for the electrodeposition of Moad (molybdenum adlayer) on Ag(111) from alkaline aqueous solution. Moreover, the first stages of the growth of MoSe2 are also presented, performing the deposition of Sead on the deposited Moad. The deposition of Moad on Sead/Ag(111) was also explored. MoSe2 is of interest due to its peculiar optoelectronic properties, making it suitable for solar energy conversion and nanoelectronics. In this study, electrodeposition techniques were exploited for the synthesis process as more sustainable alternatives to vacuum based techniques. The electrochemical atomic layer deposition (E-ALD) method emerges as a suitable technique to grow inorganic semiconductor thin films thanks to its fulfillment of the green energy predicament and a strict structural and morphological control, and this approach has gathered the attention of the scientific community. Indeed, E-ALD exploits surface limited reactions (SLRs) to alternate the deposition of chemically different atomic layers constituting a compound semiconductor. Thus, E-ALD is one of the most promising electrodeposition techniques for the growth of thin-film of compound semiconductors under a strict structural and morphological control. On this ground, E-ALD can be considered an ideal technique for the growth of 2D materials.

In this work, novel hybrid nanostructured surfaces, consisting of dense arrays of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) functionalized by Ag nanoparticles (AgNP/SiNWs), were used for the laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF MS) analysis of some typical unsaturated food components (e.g. squalene, oleic acid) to assess their MS performance. The synthesis of the novel platforms is an easy, cost-effective process based on the maskless wet-etching preparation at room temperature of SiNWs followed by their decoration with AgNPs, produced by pulsed laser deposition. No particular surface pretreatment or addition of organic matrixes/ionizers was necessary. Moreover, oil extracts (e.g. extra virgin olive oil, peanut oil) could be investigated on AgNP/SiNWs surfaces, revealing their different MS profiles. It was shown that such substrates operate at reduced laser energy, typically generating intense silver cluster ions and analyte adducts. A comparison with bare SiNWs was also performed, indicating the importance of AgNP density on NW surface. In this case, desorption/ionization on silicon was invoked as probable LDI mechanism. Finally, the influence of SiNW length and surface composition on MS results was assessed. The combination of typical properties of SiNWs (hydrophobicity, antireflectivity) with ionization ability of metal NPs can be a valid methodology for the further development of nanostructured surfaces in LDI-TOF MS applications. This work is focused on the laser ablation synthesis of Cu/Ag nanocolloids in chitosan-based aqueous solution using a flow cell. A two-step process using femtosecond laser pulses was applied to consecutively ablate each metal. As-prepared nanomaterials were morphologically and spectroscopically characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy, UV-Vis and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopies. Application of Cu/Ag nanomaterials is envisaged as antibacterial materials for food packaging.

Proteomic approaches based on mass spectrometry have become increasingly popular for protein binder's identification in works of art. The identification of the binder employed may offer key information on paintings and other polychrome objects and contribute to assess their historical and technical context, also providing useful hints for a proper restoration and/or conservation treatment. Usually, the protocols employed to this purpose are invasive and at least micro sampling is required. Here, we present a simple transferable method for a quasi-non-invasive analysis of binders in artworks based on the use of a very small poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/poly (vinylpyrrolidone) hydrogel (3 mm × 3 mm) previously loaded with trypsin for the in-situ digestion of proteins and applied onto the objects' surface. Upon extraction of digested peptides from the hydrogel, they were examined by MALDI-TOF-MS and/or LC-ESI-MS/MS. The method was validated on fresh and aged model pictorial layers; optical microscope images, and spectrophotocolorimetry confirmed that neither damage nor color alteration of the painting layer occurred, and no hydrogel residue was left. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy carried out on paint models confirmed that the treatment with trypsin-loaded gels did not modify the pigment composition, even on aged samples. The protocol was successfully applied to a painting on wood mockup aged thirty years, a statue dated XV century exposed in San Lorenzo church (Bisceglie, Bari, Apulia), and a liturgical scroll Benedictio ignis et fontis (Benedizionale) of the Museo Diocesano of Bari dated eleventh century; in all these objects the proteinaceous binder was readily and successfully identified.

The continuous improvement of the technical potential of bioelectronic devices for biosensing applications will provide clinicians with a reliable tool for biomarker quantification down to the single molecule. Eventually, physicians will be able to identify the very moment at which the illness state begins, with a terrific impact on the quality of life along with a reduction of health care expenses. However, in clinical practice, to gather enough information to formulate a diagnosis, multiple biomarkers are normally quantified from the same biological sample simultaneously. Therefore, it is critically important to translate lab-based bioelectronic devices based on electrolyte gated thin-film transistor technology into a cost-effective portable multiplexing array prototype. In this perspective, the assessment of cost-effective manufacturability represents a crucial step, with specific regard to the optimization of the bio-functionalization protocol of the transistor gate module. Hence, we have assessed, using surface plasmon resonance technique, a sustainable and reliable cost-effective process to successfully bio-functionalize a gold surface, suitable as gate electrode for wide-field bioelectronic sensors. The bio-functionalization process herein investigated allows to reduce the biorecognition element concentration to one-tenth, drastically impacting the manufacturing costs while retaining high analytical performance.

Nanocomposites based on polyethylene oxide and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed as new active antimicrobial and antibiofilm coatings. Silver colloids were synthesized by nanosecond-pulsed laser ablation synthesis in solution using an organic solvent to ensure a long-term stability of nanocolloids and a good solubility in polymeric solution. AgNPs were incorporated in a biodegradable polymer matrix for the preparation of composite films. The coatings’ surface chemical composition (assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was correlated with the ion release.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well-known for their antimicrobial effects and several groups are proposing them as active agents to fight antimicrobial resistance. A wide variety of methods is available for nanoparticle synthesis, affording a broad spectrum of chemical and physical properties. In this work, we report on AgNPs produced by laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS), discussing the major features of this approach. Laser ablation synthesis is one of the best candidates, as compared to wet-chemical syntheses, for preparing Ag nano-antimicrobials. In fact, this method allows the preparation of stable Ag colloids in pure solvents without using either capping and stabilizing agents or reductants. LASiS produces AgNPs, which can be more suitable for medical and food-related applications where it is important to use non-toxic chemicals and materials for humans. In addition, laser ablation allows for achieving nanoparticles with different properties according to experimental laser parameters, thus influencing antibacterial mechanisms. However, the concentration obtained by laser-generated AgNP colloids is often low, and it is hard to implement them on an industrial scale. To obtain interesting concentrations for final applications, it is necessary to exploit high-energy lasers, which are quite expensive. In this review, we discuss the pros and cons of the use of laser ablation synthesis for the production of Ag antimicrobial colloids, taking into account applications in the food packaging field.

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) decorated by pulsed laser ablation with gold or copper nanoparticles (labeled as AuNPs@SiNWs and CuNPs@SiNWs) were investigated for their catalytic properties. Results demonstrated high catalytic performances in the Caryl–N couplings and subsequent carbonylations for gold and copper catalysts, respectively, that have no precedents in the literature. The excellent activity, attested by the very high turn over number (TON) values, was due both to the uniform coverage along the NW length and to the absence of the chemical shell surrounding the metal nanoparticles (MeNPs). A high recyclability was also observed and can be ascribed to the strong covalent interaction at the Me–Si interface by virtue of metal “silicides” formation.

Surface modification treatments able to confer antistain/antibacterial properties to natural or synthetic materials are receiving increasing attention among scientists. Ion beam co-sputtering (IBS) of zinc oxide (ZnO) and poly-tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) targets allows for the preparation of novel multifunctional coatings composed of antimicrobial ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) finely dispersed in an antistain PTFE polymeric matrix. Remarkably, IBS has been proved to be successful in the controlled deposition of thin nanocoatings as an alternative to wet methods. Moreover, tuning IBS deposition parameters allows for the control of ZnONP loadings, thus modulating the antibacterial/antistain coating’s final properties. All the deposited coatings were fully characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in order to obtain information on the materials’ surface composition, with deep insight into the nanocoatings’ morphology as a function of the ZnONP loadings. An analysis of high-resolution XP spectra evidenced a high degree of polymer defluorination along with the formation of inorganic fluorides at increasing ZnO volume ratios. Hence, post-deposition treatments for fluorides removal, performed directly in the deposition chamber, were successfully developed and optimized. In this way, a complete stoichiometry for inorganic nanophases was obtained, allowing for the conversion of fluorides into ZnO.

Hybrids consisting of silver nanoparticles (in varying fractions) and of TiOx/ZnO were prepared via top-down ion beam sputtering (IBS) deposition on silicon substrates. The deposited nanomaterials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that such composites represent a viable substrate for use in both surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), as exemplarily shown for crystal violet as the model analyte. The C-H bending mode at about 1181 cm-1 and the C-N vibration at 1361 cm-1 observed in the SERS and SEIRAS spectra, respectively, have been used as analytical signal. The substrate consisting of TiOx NPs with 33% fraction of silver provides the strongest enhancement in SERS (up to 10,000-fold), while TiOx/AgNPs with thickness of 2 and 1 nm in ion beam sputtering, respectively, provides the best sensitivity in SEIRAS. The substrates also display photocatalytic activity as shown by the degradation of adsorbed crystal violet under ultraviolet irradiation. The development of antibacterial coatings is of great interest from both industry and the consumer’s point of view. In this study, we characterized tanned leather and polyurethane leatherette, typically employed in the automotive and footwear industries, which were modified by photo-deposition of antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Material surface chemical composition was investigated in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The material’s antibacterial capability was checked against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as representative microorganisms in cross transmissions. Due to the presence of silver in a nanostructured form, nanosafety issues were considered, as well. Ionic release in contact media, as well as whole nanoparticle release from treated materials, were quantitatively evaluated, thus providing specific information on potential product nanotoxicity, which was further investigated through cytocompatibility MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assays, also after surface abrasion of the materials. The proved negligible nanoparticle release, as well as the controlled release of antibacterial ions, shed light on the materials’ potentialities, in terms of both high activity and safety.

Nanomaterials are frequently used in laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) as DI enhancers, providing excellent figures of merit for the analysis of low molecular weight organic molecules. In recent years, literature on this topic has benefited from several studies assessing the fundamental aspects of the ion desorption efficiency and the internal energy transfer, in the case of model analytes. Several different parameters have been investigated, including the intrinsic chemical and physical properties of the nanophase (chemical composition, thermal conductivity, photo-absorption efficiency, specific heat capacity, phase transition point, explosion threshold, etc.), along with morphological parameters such as the nanophase size, shape, and interparticle distance. Other aspects, such as the composition, roughness and defects of the substrate supporting the LDI-active nanophases, the nanophase binding affinity towards the target analyte, the role of water molecules, have been taken into account as well. Readers interested in nanoparticle based LDI-MS sub-techniques (SALDI-, SELDI-, NALDI- MS) will find here a concise overview of the recent findings in the specialized field of fundamental and mechanistic studies, shading light on the desorption ionization phenomena responsible of the outperforming MS data offered by these techniques.

A useful protocol for waste bis-phenol A-polycarbonates (BPA-PC) chemical recycling is proposed based on a bifunctional acid/basic catalyst composed by nanostructured zinc oxide and tetrabutylammonium chloride (ZnO-NPs/NBu4Cl) in quality of Lewis acid and base, respectively. Retro-polymerization reaction proved to be of general application for several nucleophiles, including water, alcohols, amines, polyols, aminols and polyamines, leading to the complete recovery of BPA monomer and enabling the PC polymer to function as a green carbonylating agent (green phosgene alternative) for preparing carbonates, urethanes and ureas. A complete depolymerization can be obtained in seven hours at 100 °C and ZnO nanocatalyst can be recycled several times without sensible loss of activity. Remarkably, when polycarbonate is reacted with glycerol, it is possible to realize in a single process the conversion of two industrial wastes (BPA-PC and glycerol) into two valuable chemicals like BPA monomer and glycerol carbonate (the latter being a useful industrial solvent and fuel additive).

Silver nanophases are routinely used as bioactive additives in commercial products. Besides their antimicrobial activity, nanosafety issues regarding the application of (silver-based) nanoantimicrobials should be considered, as well. In this study, we modified polyurethane foams, typically employed in air filtration and stuffing, by photodeposited silver nanoparticles for preparing hybrid materials (Ag-PU) with antibacterial properties. The composite materials were characterized in terms of morphology, surface chemical composition, ionic release in contact media, bioactivity, as well as whole nanoparticle release. Cytocompatibility was also assessed on 3T3 mouse fibroblasts. The proposed systematic approach allows for defining suitable composite final properties, in terms of bioactivity and safety, by properly tuning the deposition parameters.

Chemical, structural, morphological and micro-/macro-electrical properties of undoped and nitrogen-(N-)doped diamond films are determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM) and two points technique for I-V characteristics, respectively. The characterization results are very useful to examine and understand the relationship among these properties. The effect of the nitrogen incorporation in diamond films is investigated through the evolution of the chemical, structural, morphological and topographical features and of the electrical behavior. The distribution of the electrical current is first assessed at millimeter scale on the surface of diamond films and then at micrometer scale on small regions in order to establish the sites where the carriers preferentially move. Specifically, the SCM images indicate a non-uniform distribution of carriers on the morphological structures mainly located along the grain boundaries. A good agreement is found by comparing the electrical currents at the micro- and macro-scale. This work aims to highlight phenomena such as photo- and thermionic emission from N-doped diamond useful for microelectronic engineering. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this article is proposed a new preparation method for composite ultra-thin films for photovoltaic application. Compounds such as Kesterites (CZTS, ternary and quaternary copper and zinc sulfides) could be used in virtue of their semiconductor behavior in conjunction with electrodeposition from aqueous media methodologies; in particular E-ALD (Electrochemical Atomic Layer Deposition) method seems a legitimate alternative to the high pressure and temperature methods used since today. We studied the feasibility of the electrodeposition process of two layers of semiconductors (Cux Zny S, with p electronic proprieties, and CdS with n electronic proprieties), one above the other, by means of E-ALD. Preliminary electrochemical studies revealed the complex nature of the composite film, impairing the anodic stripping of Cd. In order to confirm that the Cd electrodeposition is surface limited, two sets of samples were compared using different conventional and charge controlled potentiostatic electrodeposition methodologies. SEM and XPS characterization was then performed to characterize morphologically and quantitatively the samples. Consequently, the conditions for the surface limited deposition of Cd over Cux Zny S have been reckoned through the electrochemical and spectroscopical analysis. The layered (p-n) structure of the thin film has been confirmed.

Antimicrobial copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were electrosynthetized and applied to the controlled impregnation of industrial polyurethane foams used as padding in the textile production or as filters for air conditioning systems. CuNP-modified materials were investigated and characterized morphologically and spectroscopically, by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The release of copper ions in solution was studied by Electro-Thermal Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (ETAAS). Finally, the antimicrobial activity of freshly prepared, as well as aged samples—stored for two months—was demonstrated towards different target microorganisms.

Copper-chitosan (Cu-CS) nanoantimicrobials are a novel class of bioactive agents, providing enhanced and synergistic efficiency in the prevention of biocontamination in several application fields, from food packaging to biomedical. Femtosecond laser pulses were here exploited to disrupt a Cu solid target immersed into aqueous acidic solutions containing different CS concentrations. After preparation, Cu-CS colloids were obtained by tuning both Cu/CS molar ratios and laser operating conditions. As prepared Cu-CS colloids were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), to study copper complexation with the biopolymer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to elucidate the nanomaterials’ surface chemical composition and chemical speciation of the most representative elements. Transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize nanocolloids morphology. For all samples, ξ-potential measurements showed highly positive potentials, which could be correlated with the XPS information. The spectroscopic and morphological characterization herein presented outlines the characteristics of a technologically-relevant nanomaterial and provides evidence about the optimal synthesis parameters to produce almost monodisperse and properly-capped Cu nanophases, which combine in the same core-shell structure two renowned antibacterial agents.

Novel triphenylamine (TPA)-based organic dyes were synthesized and assessed for their performance in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In the dyes considered the TPA group and the cyanoacetic acid have the role of electron-donor and -acceptor, respectively, whereas a thienyl-fluoro-phenyl-substituted was introduced as ?-linker to improve the dye performance in DSSCs. Experimental characterizations empasize that the presence of electron withdrawing substituents in the linker close to the electron-acceptor moiety leads to a more efficient intramolecular photoinduced charge transfer. In fact, photovoltaic experiments reveal that the DSSCs based on the thienyl-o-fluoro-phenyl substituted dyes yield a better solar-energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency.

Novel Donor-pi-Acceptor triphenylamine-based dyes were synthesized and characterized with regard to their photophysical and photoelectrochemical properties by introducing the ethynyl-2-thienyl moiety as spacer (YS-1). The modification of the donor triphenylamine, performed by intodroducing two p-methoxy groups gave the YS-2 dye. Experimental results showed that the UV-Vis absorption spectra changed exhibiting the increasing of the molar extinction coefficient as well as the red-shift in dichloromethane solution. The maximum power conversion efficiency under standard global AM 1.5 illumination for YS-1 was 4.1% rising to 5.3% when the cell was sensitized with YS-2. The interpretation of the improvement and the discussion of the experimental results were corroborated by Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory calculations, carried out for the photosensitizers in vacuo and in solution. In particular, the effects on the spectroscopic properties of the dyes due to the presence of the solvent and to the common deprotonation of the carboxylic unit in polar solvents have been investigated.

The increasing interest in technologies capable of tracking a biomarker down to the physical limit points toward new opportunities in early diagnostics of progressive diseases. Indeed, single-molecule detection technologies are foreseen to enable clinicians to associate the tiniest increase in a biomarker with the progression of a disease, particularly at its early stage. Bioelectronic organic transistors represent an extremely powerful tool to achieve label-free and single-molecule detection of clinically relevant biomarkers. These electronic devices are millimetric in size and in the future could be mass-produced at low cost. The core of the single molecule with a large transistor (SiMoT) platform, based on an electrolyte-gated field-effect transistor, is a gold gate electrode biofunctionalized with a self-assembled monolayer, a densely packed layer of recognition elements. So far, only the SiMoT detection of proteins, using the corresponding antibodies as recognition elements, has been reported. In this study, the SiMoT sensing response toward genomic biomarkers is proposed. Herein, the gate is functionalized with a genomic biomarker for multiple sclerosis (miR-182). This is relevant, not only because a limit of detection of a single molecule is achieved but also because it proves that the SiMoT label-free, single-molecule detection principle is the only one of its kind that can detect, by means of the same platform, both protein and genomic markers.

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) single-molecule and label-free detection is demonstrated, for the first time, by means of an electrolyte-gated thin-film transistor. The sensor integrates a millimeter-wide self-assembled monolayer (SAM) that includes trillions of anti-IgM capturing proteins. This adds generality to the already introduced single molecule with a transistor (SiMoT) platform. Besides the extremely high sensitivity, the SAM confers to the SiMoT bioelectronic sensor a high selectivity that is here assessed by measuring the differential responses of the IgM or the immunoglobulin G (IgG) cognate biomarkers mutually interacting with anti-IgM or anti-IgG capturing SAMs. At the same time, no response to IgG or IgM is measured with the anti-IgM or anti-IgG SAM, respectively. The SiMoT technology is known to exploit the hydrogen bonding network present in the SAM. In this paper, further elements supporting the model of this network enabling single-molecule sensitivity are provided by demonstrating that, once this electrostatic connecting element is removed, the sensing is suppressed. It also provides a plausible explanation of the wide-field single-molecule sensing mechanism in terms of the amplified field-effect response and propagation of electrostatic domains associated with the electrostatic hydrogen bonding network. Future possible applications to low-cost early detection of infection diseases can be envisaged.

Robust electrolyte-gated organic field-effect-transistors (OFETs) are particularly needed for the development of biosensing devices. However, when a FET biosensor operates in aqueous environments or even in real biological fluids, some critical issues may arise due to the possible lack of environmental long-term and/or operational stability. An important source of instability is associated with the degradation of the organic electronic channel materials such as for instance, poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT), a benchmark commercially available p-type organic semiconductor. In this work, the investigation of critical parameters, such as the control over spurious electrochemical phenomena as well as the operating conditions that can affect water-gated OFETs lifetime, is reported, together with a proposed modeling of the P3HT stability curve over 1 week in water. The investigation of possible morphological/chemical modifications occurring at the polymer surface after operating in water for 2 weeks was carried out. Moreover, it is proven how the addition of a gel layer can extend the P3HT based water-gated OFET shelf life up to 2 months.

Since 2004, we have been developing nanomaterials with antimicrobial properties, the so-called nanoantimicrobials. When the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged, we started investigating new and challenging routes to nanoantivirals. The two fields have some important points of contact. We would like to share with the readership our vision of the role a (nano)materials scientist can play in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. As researchers specifically working on surfaces and nanomaterials, in this letter we underline the importance of nanomaterial-based technological solutions in several aspects of the fight against the virus. While great resources are understandably being dedicated to treatment and diagnosis, more efforts could be dedicated to limit the virus spread. Increasing the efficacy of personal protection equipment, developing synergistic antiviral coatings, are only two of the cases discussed. This is not the first nor the last pandemic: our nanomaterials community may offer several technological solutions to challenge the ongoing and future global health emergencies. Readers’ feedback and suggestions are warmly encouraged.
