Abstract

International audience; We present and fully characterize a flow cell dedicated to imaging in liquid at the nanoscale. Its use as a routine sample environment for soft X-ray spectromicroscopy is demonstrated, in particular through the spectral analysis of inorganic particles in water. The care taken in delineating the fluidic pathways and the precision associated with pressure actuation ensure the efficiency of fluid renewal under the beam, which in turn guarantees a successful utilization of this microfluidic tool for in situ kinetic studies. The assembly of the described flow cell necessitates no sophisticated microfabrication and can be easily implemented in any laboratory. Furthermore, the design principles we relied on are transposable to all microscopies involving strongly absorbed radiations (e.g. X-ray, electron), as well as to all kinds of X-ray diffraction/scattering techniques.

Abstract

Mastering and understanding the magnetic couplings between magnetic electrodes separated by organic layers are crucial for developing new hybrid spintronic devices. We study the magnetic exchange interactions in organic-inorganic heterojunctions and unveil the possibility of controlling the strength of the magnetic exchange coupling between two ferromagnetic electrodes across $\ensuremath{\pi}$-conjugated molecules' ($\ensuremath{\alpha}$-sexithiophene or para-sexiphenyl) ultrathin film. In $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}/\ensuremath{\pi}$-conjugated molecules/Co magnetic tunnel junctions, an antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling with variable strength is observed according to the nature of the aromatic rings (thiophene or phenyl groups). The underlying physical mechanism is revealed by ab initio calculations relating the strength of magnetic coupling to the spin moment penetration into a molecular layer at the molecule/Co interface. The prospect that magnetic coupling between two ferromagnetic electrodes can be mediated and tuned by organic molecules opens different perspectives in the way magnetization of organic tunnel junctions or spin valves can be driven.

Abstract

International audience; Epitaxial graphene (EG) grown on an annealed 6H-SiC(0001) surface has been studied under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions by using a combined dynamic-scanning tunneling microscope/frequency modulation-atomic force microscope (dynamic-STM/FM-AFM) platform based on a qPlus probe. STM and AFM images independently recorded present the same hexagonal lattice of bumps with a 1.9 nm lattice period, which agrees with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results previously reported, attributed to the (6 x 6) quasi-cell associated with the 6H-SiC(0001) (6$\sqrt 3$x6$\sqrt 3$) R30 reconstruction. However, topographic bumps in AFM images and maxima in the simultaneously recorded mean-tunneling-current map do not overlap but appear to be spaced typically by about 1 nm along the [11] direction of the (6 x 6) quasi-cell. A similar shift is observed between the position of maxima in dynamic-STM images and those in the simultaneously recorded frequency shift map. The origin of these shifts is discussed in terms of electronic coupling variations between the local density of states (LDOS) of EG and the LDOS of the buffer layer amplified by mechanical distortions of EG induced by the STM or AFM tip. Therefore, a constant current STM image of EG on a reconstructed 6H-SiC(0001) surface does not reproduce its real topography but corresponds to the measured LDOS modulations, which depend on the variable tip-induced graphene distortion within the (6 x 6) quasi-cell.

Abstract

This work clearly demonstrates that the X Ray Reflectometry technique (XRR), extensively used to assess the quality of microelectronic devices can be a useful tool to study the first stages of ion beam mixing. This technique allows measuring the evolution of the Si concentration profile in irradiated Cr/Si layers. From the analysis of the XRR profiles, it clearly appears that the Si profile cannot be described by a simple error function.

Abstract

International audience; Sharp Pt/Ir tips have been reproducibly etched by an electrochemical process using an inverse geometry of an electrochemical cell and a dedicated electronic device which allows us to control the applied voltages waveform and the intensity of the etching current. Conductive tips with a radius smaller than 10 nm were routinely produced as shown by field emission measurements through FowlereNordheim plots. These etched tips were then fixed on a quartz tuning fork force sensor working in a qPlus configuration to check their performances for both scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. Their sharpness and conductivity are evidenced by the resolution achieved in STM and AFM images obtained of epitaxial graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) surface. The structure of an epitaxial graphene layer thermally grown on the 6H-SiC(0001) (6R3x6R3)R30° reconstructed surface, was successfully imaged at room temperature with STM, dynamic STM and by frequency modulated AFM.

International audience; Tip induced mechanical deformation of epitaxial graphene grown on reconstructed 6H–SiC(0001) surface during scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy studies Abstract The structural and mechanical properties of an epitaxial graphene (EG) monolayer thermally grown on top of a 6H–SiC(0001) surface were studied by combined dynamic scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). Experimental STM, dynamic STM and AFM images of EG on 6H–SiC(0001) show a lattice with a 1.9 nm period corresponding to the (6 × 6) quasi-cell of the SiC surface. The corrugation amplitude of this (6 × 6) quasi-cell, measured from AFM topographies, increases with the setpoint value of the frequency shift Δf (15–20 Hz, repulsive interaction). Excitation variations map obtained simultaneously with the AFM topography shows that larger dissipation values are measured in between the topographical bumps of the (6 × 6) quasi-cell. These results demonstrate that the AFM tip deforms the graphene monolayer. During recording in dynamic STM mode, a frequency shift (Δf) map is obtained in which Δf values range from 41 to 47 Hz (repulsive interaction). As a result, we deduced that the STM tip, also, provokes local mechanical distortions of the graphene monolayer. The origin of these tip-induced distortions is discussed in terms of electronic and mechanical properties of EG on 6H–SiC(0001).

Abstract

Hahn, C. et al., We report on an experimental study on the spin-waves relaxation rate in two series of nanodisks of diameter ¿=300 , 500, and 700¿nm, patterned out of two systems: a 20¿nm thick yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film grown by pulsed laser deposition either bare or covered by 13¿nm of Pt. Using a magnetic resonance force microscope, we measure precisely the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth of each individual YIG and YIG|Pt nanodisks. We find that the linewidth in the nanostructure is sensibly smaller than the one measured in the extended film. Analysis of the frequency dependence of the spectral linewidth indicates that the improvement is principally due to the suppression of the inhomogeneous part of the broadening due to geometrical confinement, suggesting that only the homogeneous broadening contributes to the linewidth of the nanostructure. For the bare YIG nano-disks, the broadening is associated to a damping constant ¿=4¿×¿10¿4 . A threefold increase of the linewidth is observed for the series with Pt cap layer, attributed to the spin pumping effect. The measured enhancement allows to extract the spin mixing conductance found to be G¿¿¿¿=1.55¿×¿1014¿¿¿1¿m¿2 for our YIG(20nm)|Pt interface, thus opening large opportunities for the design of YIG based nanostructures with optimized magnetic losses., This research was supported by the French Grants Trinidad (ASTRID 2012 program) and by the RTRA Triangle de la Physique grant Spinoscopy.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate the ultrafast response of the bismuth (111) surface by means of time resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The direct visualization of the electronic structure allows us to gain insights on electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction. Concerning electron-electron interaction , it is found that electron thermalization is fluence dependent and can take as much as several hundreds of femtoseconds at low fluences. This behavior is in qualitative agreement with Landau's theory of Fermi liquids but the data show deviations from the behavior of a common 3D degenerate electron gas. Concerning electron-phonon interaction, our data allows us to directly observe the coupling of individual Bloch state to the coherent A1g mode. It is found that surface states are much less coupled to this mode when compared to bulk states. This is confirmed by ab initio calculations of surface and bulk bismuth.

Abstract

International audience; Different diffraction patterns measured above and below the critical angle for total reflection were recorded on a Gd doped ceria layer deposited on a Si(100) substrate in asymmetric coplanar diffraction conditions. From the analysis of diffraction patterns, it was possible to point out peculiar optical aberrations responsible for the shifts and the broadenings of Bragg peaks induced by this setup. Corrections for all these aberrations were implanted in a Rietveld programme. Using these corrections, it becomes possible to follow the evolution of the structure (chemical composition, phases) and the micro structure (strain field, micro strain due to heterogeneities between grains, size of coherent diffracting domains) versus the depth on thin films.

Abstract

International audience; Much work is nowadays being devoted to the characterization of the structure and the microstructure of thin films and mesoporous materials. Different physical and chemical processes used to elaborate these thin films often induce a fiber texture in these materials. The X-ray glancing-incidence technique appears to be a useful tool for collecting diffraction patterns of thin films while avoiding the peaks of the substrate. However, the scattering vector in this asymmetric scattering geometry is not perpendicular to the surface of the sample. This point implies that the correction developed to model the effects of a fiber texture in Bragg-Brentano geometry, where the scattering vector is always normal to the surface of the sample, cannot be applied in glancing incidence. This work presents a procedure to correct the preferred orientation due to this fiber texture in asymmetric scattering geometry and then in glancing incidence. By an example, it is proved that this correction of the fiber texture is efficient. The main point of interest regarding this correction is that only a few parameters are needed to handle the effect of the fiber texture on the diffraction patterns collected in asymmetric scattering geometry and then under glancing incidence.

Abstract

International audience; We address the role of lateral confinement in determining the micromagnetic structure of small objects featuring perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We have imaged the spatial distribution of magnetic domains in Co/Pd multilayered objects by x-ray holography in transmission mode, a technique based on resonant coherent scattering of polarized x rays. In addition to high spatial resolution and magnetic sensitivity, x-ray holography features chemical selectivity and probes the entire bulk of the magnetic sample. By analyzing and comparing images of several magnetic objects (squares and rectangles with 0.4-3-mu m lateral sizes) that underwent the same preparation procedure and magnetic history, we highlight the influence of the object shape and of its orientation with respect to an external field in determining the remanent magnetic microstructure. The discussion of our results is backed by micromagnetic calculations.

Abstract

Background Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are a family of materials featuring a large range of length, diameter, numbers of walls and, quite often metallic impurities coming from the catalyst used for their synthesis. They exhibit unique physical properties, which have already led to an extensive development of CNT for numerous applications. Because of this development and the resulting potential increase of human exposure, an important body of literature has been published with the aim to evaluate the health impact of CNT. However, despite evidences of uptake and long-term persistence of CNT within macrophages and the central role of those cells in the CNT-induced pulmonary inflammatory response, a limited amount of data is available so far on the CNT fate inside macrophages. Therefore, the overall aim of our study was to investigate the fate of pristine single walled CNT (SWCNT) after their internalization by macrophages. Methods To achieve our aim, we used a broad range of techniques that aimed at getting a comprehensive characterization of the SWCNT and their catalyst residues before and after exposure of murine macrophages: X-ray diffraction (XRD), High Resolution (HR) Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), High Angle Annular Dark Field-Scanning TEM (HAADF-STEM) coupled to Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS), as well as micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping (μXRF), using synchrotron radiation. Results We showed 1) the rapid detachment of part of the iron nanoparticles initially attached to SWCNT which appeared as free iron nanoparticles in the cytoplasm and nucleus of CNT-exposed murine macrophages, and 2) that blockade of intracellular lysosomal acidification prevented iron nanoparticles detachment from CNT bundles and protected cells from CNT downstream toxicity. Conclusions The present results, while obtained with pristine SWCNT, could likely be extended to other catalyst-containing nanomaterials and surely open new ways in the interpretation and understanding of CNT toxicity.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate the temporal evolution of the electronic states at the bismuth (111) surface by means of time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The binding energy of bulklike bands oscillates with the frequency of the A(1g) phonon mode, whereas surface states are insensitive to the coherent displacement of the lattice. A strong dependence of the oscillation amplitude on the electronic wave vector is correctly reproduced by ab initio calculations of electron-phonon coupling. Besides these oscillations, all the electronic states also display a photoinduced shift towards higher binding energy whose dynamics follows the evolution of the electronic temperature.

Abstract

International audience; We present in this work the study of a short vertical external cavity semiconductor laser in single longitudinal operation at 852 nm without intracavity elements. Two different configurations were studied, a plane-plane configuration, stabilized by the thermal lens and a plane-concave configuration. The influence of the output coupler transmission and the thermal lens has been studied. In the plane concave configuration we have demonstrated more than 100mW in stable single frequency operation using a very compact cavity emitting around 852 nm.

Abstract

International audience; The growth of large and uniform graphene layers remains very challenging to this day due to the close correlation between the electronic and transport properties and the layer morphology. Here, we report the synthesis of uniform large-scale mono- and bilayers of graphene on off-axis 6H-SiC(0001) substrates. The originality of our approach consists of the fine control of the growth mode of the graphene by precise control of the Si sublimation rate. Moreover, we take advantage of the presence of nanofacets on the off-axis substrate to grow a large and uniform graphene with good long-range order. We believe that our approach represents a significant step toward the scalable synthesis of graphene films with high structural qualities and fine thickness control, in order to develop graphene-based electronic devices.

Abstract

The general formalism of the multipolar expansion of electrostatic interactions is applied to the calculation the potential energy between an excited atom (without fine structure) and a ground state diatomic molecule at large separations. Both partners exhibit a permanent quadrupole moment, so that their mutual quadrupole-quadrupole long-range interaction is attractive enough to bind trimers. Numerical results are given for an excited Cs(6P) atom and a ground state Cs2 molecule. The prospects for achieving photoassociation of a cold atom/dimer pair is thus discussed and found promising. The formalism can be easily generalized to the long-range interaction between molecules to investigate the formation of cold tetramers., Comment: 5 figures

Abstract

We investigate the electron spin resonance of an ensemble of Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color centers in a bulk diamond crystal. The four possible orientations of the NV-center in the lattice lead to different dependences on the magnitude and the orientation of an external static magnetic field. Experimental results obtained with a continuous microwave excitation are in good agreement with simulations. In addition, we observe that the average radiative lifetime of the NV color center is also modified when the external magnetic field is applied. This variation is explained by the mixing between mS = 0 and mS = $\pm$1 spin states of the NV-center with different radiative lifetimes, due to magnetic coupling. These results are of interest for a broad range of applications, such as spin-resonance-based magnetometry with a high-density ensemble of NV-centers, 14 pages, published on Applied Physics Letters journal
