Three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitectures have offered unprecedented material performances in diverse applications like energy storages, catalysts, electronic, mechanical, and photonic devices. These outstanding performances are attributed to unusual material properties at the nanoscale, enormous surface areas, a geometrical uniqueness, and comparable feature sizes with optical wavelengths. For the practical use of the unusual nanoscale properties, there have been developments for macroscale fabrications of the 3D nanoarchitectures with process areas over centimeter scales. Among the many fabrication methods for 3D structures at the nanoscale, proximity-field nanopatterning (PnP) is one of the promising techniques that generates 3D optical holographic images and transforms them into material structures through a lithographic process. Using conformal and transparent phase masks as a key factor, the PnP process has advantages in terms of stability, uniformity, and reproducibility for 3D nanostructures with periods from 300 nm to several micrometers. Other merits of realizing precise 3D features with sub-100 nm and rapid processes are attributed to the interference of coherent light diffracted by phase masks. In this review, to report the overall progress of PnP from 2003, we present a comprehensive understanding of PnP, including its brief history, the fundamental principles, symmetry control of 3D nanoarchitectures, material issues for the phase masks, and the process area expansion to the wafer-scale for the target applications. Finally, technical challenges and prospects are discussed for further development and practical applications of the PnP technique.

In this article, we propose a novel statistical eye-diagram estimation method considering nonlinear power/ground noise induced by parallel simultaneous switching output (SSO) buffers. Probability density functions (pdfs) of output step-responses affected by the SSO are derived based on the occurrence probability of each SSO pattern. From the derived output response pdfs, main-cursor (MC) pdfs and intersymbol interference (ISI) pdfs are defined. Statistical output responses are derived based on recursive convolution between the MC-pdfs and ISI-pdfs affecting each other. The proposed method, for the first time, considers steady-state responses affected by the SSO to estimate more accurate statistical eye-diagrams. The proposed method is verified by comparing the derived statistical eye-diagrams with eye diagrams obtained using full transient simulation. Also, bit error rate (BER) bathtub curves derived using the proposed method and full transient simulation are compared for verification. The proposed method is compared with the previous study to emphasize importance of the steady-state responses. Finally, the proposed method is expanded to consider previous bit patterns, which are also affected by the SSO.

Therapeutic proteins are indispensable for treatment of various human diseases. However, intrinsic short serum half-lives of proteins are still big hurdles for developing new therapeutic proteins or expanding applications of existing ones. Urate oxidase (Uox) is a therapeutic protein clinically used for treatment of hyperuricemia. Due to its short half-life, its application for gout treatment requires prolonging the half-life in vivo. Conjugation of a fatty acid (FA), a serum albumin (SA) ligand, to therapeutic proteins/peptides is an emerging strategy to prolong serum half-life presumably via neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn)–mediated recycling. FA conjugation was proven effective for peptides and small proteins (less than 28 kDa), but not for Uox (140 kDa). We hypothesized that the intramolecular distance in the conjugate of FA and Uox is a critical factor for effective FcRn-mediated recycling. In order to control the intramolecular distance in the conjugate, we varied linker lengths between Uox and palmitic acid (PA). There was a linear correlation between the linker length and serum half-life of PA–conjugated Uox (Uox-PA) conjugates. The longer linker led to about 7-fold greater extension of serum half-life of Uox in mice than the unmodified Uox. The trend in serum half-life extension matched well with that in the tertiary structure formation of FcRn/SA/Uox-PA in vitro. These results demonstrate that the intramolecular distance in the conjugate of Uox and FA governs the stable formation of FcRn/SA/FA-conjugated protein and serum half-life extension in vivo. These findings would also contribute to development of effective FAconjugated therapeutic proteins.

In this article, we first propose a deep reinforcement learning (RL)-based optimal decoupling capacitor (decap) design method for silicon interposer-based 2.5-D/3-D integrated circuits (ICs). The proposed method provides an optimal decap design that satisfies target impedance with a minimum area. Using deep RL algorithms based on reward feedback mechanisms, an optimal decap design guideline can be derived. For verification, the proposed method was applied to test power distribution networks (PDNs) and self-PDN impedance was compared with full search simulation results. We successfully verified by the full search simulation that the proposed method provides one of the solution sets. Conventional approaches are based on complex analytical models from power integrity (PI) domain expertise. However, the proposed method requires only specifications of the PDN structure and decap, along with a simple reward model, achieving fast and accurate data-driven results. Computing time of the proposed method was a few minutes, significantly reduced than that of the full search simulation, which took more than a month. Furthermore, the proposed deep RL method covered up to $10^{17}$ – $10^{18}$ cases, an approximately $10^{12}$ – $10^{13}$ order increase compared to the previous RL-based methods that did not utilize deep-learning techniques.

This paper proposes a generator polynomial model-based eye diagram estimation method for the error-correction codes (ECCs), which are the Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) code and the Reed–Solomon (RS) code. The ECCs compensate for the channel loss at the bit level, so most of the systems include the ECC block. The BCH and RS codes are the generator polynomial-based ECCs; this paper proposes the generator polynomial model-based method. The model provides the accurate probability density function of the code words for the BCH and RS code. Thus, the proposed method is capable of achieving the signal integrity analysis for the system level. For verification, we design the BCH and RS encoders. The estimated eye diagrams are nearly the same as that of the transient simulation for the BCH and RS codes. Furthermore, the voltage bathtub curves are the same up to 10−8. For a smaller bit-error rate value, the proposed method only provides the bathtub curve. This paper successfully verifies the eye diagram estimation method for the BCH and RS codes.

This paper proposes eye diagram estimation methods for linear feedback shift register (LFSR)-based bit streams in pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) test and scrambling. The PRBS test uses the LFSR as a random data source; scrambling suppresses the radiated EMI by exclusive-OR (XOR) between the data and the LFSR. Both cases include the LFSR as the last block, thus, the LFSR dominantly determines the eye diagram. This paper introduced the deterministic and statistical eye diagram for the PRBS test and scrambling, respectively. The deterministic eye diagram was verified by comparing to the measurement; the statistical eye diagram was verified by comparing to the transient simulation. We also compared the voltage bathtub curves for the scrambling. The measurement and proposed method were correlated up to the BER of 10−10.

In this paper, we first propose power distribution network (PDN) model of the perforated power and ground (P/G) planes including substrate effects and multiarray through-silicon vias (TSVs) for a silicon interposer. Since it is almost impossible to simulate a high metal density perforated PDN structure, we first suggest a modeling methodology for P/G perforated planes to reduce simulation time significantly with a high accuracy. To obtain the PDN impedance of a silicon interposer faster, we convert the perforated planes to solid planes with a dielectric mixture. The capacitance (C) and conductance (G) component of perforated P/G planes are precisely estimated based on the conformal mapping method. From the estimated C and G, the physical dimension and material properties of the dielectric mixture of solid P/G planes are determined, respectively. Because silicon interposer PDN consists of a periodic structure, we design and analyze the unit cell of a PDN thoroughly. From the unit cell analysis, the electrical characteristic of an entire PDN for a silicon interposer is successfully estimated. The PDN impedance of the proposed solid and perforated P/G planes and simulation time to obtain each PDN impedance are compared and evaluated, respectively. The proposed methodology is validated by a full 3-D electromagnetic (EM) simulation in the frequency range from 0.01 to 20 GHz. We also proposed models of multiarray P/G TSVs that can be applied to the various P/G patterns for a silicon interposer. From the inductance matrix considering current directions, the self- and mutual inductances of TSVs are accurately calculated. Because quasi-transverse electromagnetic mode is propagated through TSVs and the substrate dielectric of a silicon interposer can be regarded as a uniform dielectric, the capacitance and conductance of TSVs can be calculated from the inductance matrix. The proposed model of multiarray TSVs is also analyzed and verified by EM simulations in the frequency range from 0.01 to 20 GHz with a high accuracy.

This paper, for the first time, proposed a novel eye-diagram estimation method for pulse amplitude modulation with N -level (PAM-N) signaling. For verification, a through-silicon via (TSV) channel was fabricated. Because the input of the proposed method is an insertion loss, the loss of the fabricated TSV channel was measured up to 110 GHz. The estimated eye diagrams and measured eye diagrams were compared for the same TSV channel. The proposed method and measurements have nearly the same eye-height and eye-width values at data rates of 2, 4, and 8 Gb/s. Therefore, the proposed method successfully provides PAM-N's eye diagram with the insertion loss. Furthermore, bathtub curves were compared for the proposed method and measurements. The proposed method provides a bathtub curve up to 10–12, but in contrast, the measurements only provide a bathtub curve up to 10–5 due to a limited number of samples. Both of the bathtub curves are nearly the same up to 10–5 in amplitude. In conclusion, the eye-diagram estimation method for PAM-N signaling is successfully proposed and verified.

In this paper, we first proposed a novel hybrid loop array (HLA) for low leakage electromagnetic field (EMF) level and high efficiency in a wireless high power transfer system. The proposed HLA effectively enhances the system efficiency and shields leakage EMF in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system using kHz range resonant frequency. The key originality of the proposed HLA is the combination of two types of loop coil; shielding loop coil (SLC) and amplifying loop coil (ALC). SLCs reduce leakage EMF, and ALCs significantly enhance the magnetic field from a Tx coil. The simulation and experiment results show that the proposed solution successfully overcomes the limitations of the existing solutions. Analytical modeling and design procedure are introduced and discussed. In addition, the experimental verification of the simulation result is included. We first designed and modeled an HLA considering the coupling effect of neighboring loop coils to evaluate its efficiency and leakage EMF. With the proposed HLA, we demonstrated a 9.36% improvement in the efficiency and 3 dBm reduction in the leakage EMF near the WPT system.

The main purpose of this paper is to give a new and general way to obtain steganographic schemes from perfect codes on Cayley graphs, motivated by the F5 algorithm based on binary Hamming codes. We obtain the steganography based on perfect Hamming codes as a special case and also give various equivalent conditions for the existence of a perfect code on a k-regular Abelian Cayley graph. Then we show that a perfect code on an Abelian Cayley graph produces a proper steganographic scheme. We further compute the various parameters for the steganographic scheme of type [n, k] over a finite field $$\mathbb {F}_q$$ arising from a linear [n, n − k, d] code over $$\mathbb {F}_q$$ and find also parameters for some steganographic schemes from perfect codes in k-regular Abelian Cayley graphs.

Herein, a photo-crosslinkable coumarin-containing polymer, poly(7-(4-vinyl-benzyloxyl)-4-methylcoumarin) or PVBMC, was prepared, and its physicochemical and electrical properties as a gate dielectric in organic electronic devices, such as organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) and inverter, was evaluated. The crosslinking of PVBMC by exposure to UV light (365 nm) over time was characterized using Fourier-transform IR and UV–visible spectroscopy. The measured capacitance of the cross-linked PVBMC thin film in a metal-insulator-metal-type capacitor was as high as 36.4 pF/mm2. Pentacene-based OTFT and load-type inverter with the cross-linked PVBMC gate dielectric were prepared, and their electrical responses were evaluated under ambient conditions. The OTFT showed dominant hole charge carrier transport behavior with a field-effect mobility of 1.52 × 10−1 cm2/Vs and negligible hysteresis. The load-type inverter based on the OTFT exhibited moderate static and dynamic switching responses to the applied electrical pulse. These results suggest the potential application of photo-crosslinked PVBMC as a gate dielectric in the fabrication of high-performance OTFT-based devices.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a peptide hormone with tremendous therapeutic potential for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the short half-life of its native form is a significant drawback. We previously prolonged the plasma half-life of GLP-1 via site-specific conjugation of human serum albumin (HSA) at position 16 of recombinant GLP-1 using site-specific incorporation of p-azido-phenylalanine (AzF) and strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC). However, the resulting conjugate GLP1_8G16AzF-HSA showed only moderate in vivo glucose-lowering activity, probably due to perturbed interactions with GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) caused by the albumin-linker. To identify albumin-conjugated GLP-1 variants with enhanced in vivo glucose-lowering activity, we investigated the conjugation of HSA to a C-terminal region of GLP-1 to reduce steric hindrance by the albumin-linker using two different conjugation chemistries. GLP-1 variants GLP1_8G37AzF-HSA and GLP1_8G37C-HSA were prepared using SPAAC and Michael addition, respectively. GLP1_8G37C-HSA exhibited a higher glucose-lowering activity in vivo than GLP1_8G16AzF-HSA, while GLP1_8G37AzF-HSA did not. Another GLP-1 variant, GLP1_8A37C-HSA, had a glycine to alanine mutation at position 8 and albumin at its C-terminus and exhibited in vivo glucose-lowering activity comparable to that of GLP1_8G37C-HSA, despite a moderately shorter plasma half-life. These results showed that site-specific HSA conjugation to the C-terminus of GLP-1 via Michael addition could be used to generate GLP-1 variants with enhanced glucose-lowering activity and prolonged plasma half-life in vivo.

The realization of high‐contrast modulation in optically transparent media is of great significance for emerging mechano‐responsive smart windows. However, no study has provided fundamental strategies for maximizing light scattering during mechanical deformations. Here, a new type of 3D nanocomposite film consisting of an ultrathin (≈60 nm) Al2O3 nanoshell inserted between the elastomers in a periodic 3D nanonetwork is proposed. Regardless of the stretching direction, numerous light‐scattering nanogaps (corresponding to the porosity of up to ≈37.4 vol%) form at the interfaces of Al2O3 and the elastomers under stretching. This results in the gradual modulation of transmission from ≈90% to 16% at visible wavelengths and does not degrade with repeated stretching/releasing over more than 10 000 cycles. The underlying physics is precisely predicted by finite element analysis of the unit cells. As a proof of concept, a mobile‐app‐enabled smart window device for Internet of Things applications is realized using the proposed 3D nanocomposite with successful expansion to the 3 × 3 in. scale., Mechano‐responsive smart windows are developed using stretchable 3D hybrid nanocomposites. The inserted periodic oxide nanoshell in the elastomer offers formation of light scattering air gaps upon stretching, and this provides high‐contrast optical modulation. It is demonstrated that smart window devices can be prepared for self‐responding to the surrounding environments and temporary projection screens by integrating with Internet of Things technology.

TiO2-based photocatalysis has been considered to be one of the most promising avenues for environmental remediation including water purification. However, several technical issues such as the limited surface area of bulk TiO2, the large band gap of TiO2, and rapid charge recombination still limit the practical application of TiO2 photocatalysts. Therefore, here we focus on two structural design strategies: (i) monolithic three-dimensional (3D) nanostructuring, and (ii) heterostructuring with graphitic carbon nanomaterials. A monolithic 3D nanostructure enables maximal surface area in a given volume and efficient reuse of the photocatalyst without recollection. Heterostructuring with carbon nanomaterials helps achieve maximal utilization of the solar spectrum and charge separation and provides efficient TiO2 photocatalysts. In this review, recent progress on TiO2 photocatalysts toward the abovementioned strategies will be summarized. Further discussion and direction will provide insights into the rational design of highly efficient TiO2 photocatalysts, and help develop advanced photocatalyst models.

In this paper, we, for the first time, designed and analyzed differential high-speed serial links of the silicon interposer including differential through-silicon-via (TSV) channels for a high-bandwidth memory (HBM) graphic module. The meshed ground plane and various parameters were considered in designing the silicon interposer. In addition, superior designs were proposed to improve signal integrity (SI) for the differential channels in the redistribution layer, TSVs, and the meshed ground. SI of the silicon interposer was successfully analyzed, and the corresponding results were verified based on a full 3-D electromagnetic solver and circuit simulations. A number of RLGC parameters were extracted and calculated, then adopted to verify the simulation results. The simulation results for the differential characteristic impedance and insertion loss were compared with those of the equivalent circuit. A mixed-mode conversion matrix was utilized to analyze differential-mode transmission. Moreover, a model for differential TSV channels was proposed to precisely analyze the electrical characteristics. The eye-diagram simulation was conducted to evaluate SI of the proposed designs in terms of an eye-opening voltage and timing jitter. The eye-opening voltage of the proposed design was 0.594 V, which is 45.69% of a peak-to-peak voltage of the assumed peripheral component interconnect (PCI)-express 4.0 interfaces. It is expected that the analysis and design methodologies of differential high-speed serial links for a silicon interposer could be widely adopted in the semiconductor industry.

This paper, for the first time, proposes and verifies a new coaxial silicone rubber socket for high-bandwidth and high-density package test using a fabricated sample. In addition, this paper also characterizes and verifies the coaxial silicone rubber socket. Because of the proposed coaxial socket’s novel coaxial structure, the proposed socket successfully achieves the electrical performance improvement. For verification, we compare the proposed socket and the previous noncoaxial socket in time domain. The proposed socket has greater eye height and eye width in the measured eye diagram than those of the noncoaxial socket. Moreover, the slope in the eye diagram is also improved in the case of the proposed socket. Therefore, the measured eye diagram for the coaxial socket shows the improvement in electrical performances. This paper also characterizes the equivalent RLGC model for the coaxial silicone rubber socket. In order to verify the RLGC model, we compare the insertion losses and eye diagrams from measurement, 3-D electromagnetic simulation, and the proposed RLGC model, respectively. Their insertion losses are comparable up to 20 GHz. Furthermore, the obtained eye diagrams are almost identical at the data rate of 9.6 Gb/s. In conclusion, this paper successfully proposes, verifies, and characterizes a new coaxial silicone rubber socket for the first time.

Hierarchical assembly of heterogeneous particles is of great importance to interface and colloid science. In this work, a facile but powerful approach for the large-scale production of multifunctional hydrogel particles armored with biological colloidal species is developed by combining Pickering stabilization and photopolymerization. Biocompatible hollow pollen grains extracted from naturally occurring pollen species with an average diameter of ∼32 μm serve as universal solid emulsifiers dispersed in an oil phase and are self-assembled at the interface between an oil phase and a photo-cross-linkable hydrogel to make water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion droplets. While droplets are solidified into hydrogel particles by UV-induced free-radical polymerization, self-assembled hollow pollen grains are transformed to a robust shell on hydrogel particles with supracolloidal structures. The physically adsorbed hollow pollen grains on the hydrogel core can be released by a hydration-induced swelling of hollow pollen grains, leading to a transient floating behavior of core-shell particles. The size of the resultant core-shell particles is easily controlled by tailoring the process parameters such as a liquid volume or a loading mass of hollow pollen grains. The incorporation of magnetic or upconverting luminescent nanoparticles into a hydrogel core successfully expands the functionality of core-shell particles that can provide new design opportunities for floating drug delivery or ecofriendly proppants.

Increasing the specific capacity and cycle life of graphitic carbon anodes is crucial for realizing high-performance lithium ion batteries. Herein, we introduce a new class of graphitic carbon anodes comprising highly ordered three-dimensional nanostructures decorated with SnO2 nanoparticles. The inch-scale, nanostructured graphitic carbon matrices are prepared by supported pyrolysis of epoxy templates patterned by advanced optical lithography. During the subsequent decoration process, the SnO2 nanoparticles are densely formed on the matrix without agglomeration since the periodic nanostructured matrix provides a homogeneous site for nucleation and growth. The surface coverage of the decorated SnO2 nanoparticles and the mass relative to the graphitic carbon are >80% and ∼50 wt%, respectively. The resulting nanostructured C/SnO2 composite monoliths can be assembled solely into LIB coin cells without the aid of binders and conducting agents. The achieved specific capacity and retention are 692 mAh g−1 and 87.31% (at 70th cycle), respectively, which is superior to those of nanostructured carbon anodes prepared in a similar way.

This paper, for the first time, proposes a novel stochastic model-based eye-diagram estimation method for 8B/10B and transition-minimized differential signaling (TMDS)-encoded high-speed channels. A stochastic model describes a behavior of an encoder with respect to probability. The previous eye-diagram estimation methods are based on an assumption that each bit has the same probability for 1 s and 0 s. However, the assumption limits to estimate an accurate eye-diagram for encoded high-speed channels. We first propose and apply the stochastic model for two types of 8B/10B encodings: 8B/10B and TMDS. For verification, we design the 8B/10B and TMDS encoder within MATLAB. The transient simulation for the 8B/10B encoded channels requires 9700 and 6600 s, respectively. However, the proposed method only requires 23 s in both cases. Furthermore, in the bit-error rate, the transient simulation provides the bathtub curve up to ${10^{ - 2}}$ due to processing time and computing resources. In contrast, the proposed method with the stochastic model provides the bathtub curve up to ${10^{ - 8}}$ . In conclusion, this paper successfully proposes and verifies the stochastic model-based eye-diagram estimation method for 8B/10B-encoded high-speed channels.

In this paper, for the first time, we designed and analyzed channels between a graphic processing unit and memory in a silicon interposer for a 3-D stacked high bandwidth memory (HBM). We thoroughly analyzed and verified the electrical characteristics of the silicon interposer considering various design parameters, such as the channel width and space, redistribution layer via, and under bump metallurgy pads. In particular, we also considered the meshed ground planes used for the proposed transmission lines, which are microstrip and strip lines. Signal integrity (SI) of the proposed channels in the silicon interposer was successfully analyzed and verified using a full 3-D electromagnetic solver and circuit simulations. Based on the extracted lumped circuit resistance, inductance, conductance and capacitance parameters, we thoroughly analyzed the channel characteristics and identified the parameters that dominantly affect SI in relation to each frequency range. From the analyzed insertion loss and far end crosstalk, we verified SI of the silicon interposer by eye-diagram simulations in terms of eye-height voltage and timing jitter in the time domain. In the worst case, the eye-height voltage and timing jitter of the proposed microstrip lines are 0.911 V and 36.8 ps, respectively, with 72 mV of signal coupling. The eye-height voltage and timing jitter of the proposed strip line are 0.887 V and 42.1 ps with 34 mV of single couplings. We show that the proposed channels of the silicon interposer can successfully transfer data at a 2-Gb/s data rate. Finally, we propose concepts and solutions for the next-generation HBM interface with higher data rates up to 8 Gb/s.

Polymer nanocomposites with inclusion of ceramic nanofillers have relatively high yield strength, elastic moduli, and toughness that therefore are widely used as functional coating and films for optoelectronic applications. Although the mechanical properties are enhanced with increasing the fraction of nanofiller inclusion, there generally is an upper limit on the amount of nanofiller inclusion because the aggregation of the fillers in the polymer matrix, which typically occurs, degrades the mechanical and/or optical performances above 5 vol % of inclusions. Here, we demonstrate an unconventional polymer nanocomposite composed of a uniformly distributed three-dimensional (3D) continuous ceramic nanofillers, which allows for extremely high loading (∼19 vol %) in the polymer matrix without any concern of aggregation and loss in transparency. Two-dimensional (2D) transitional metal oxides (TMOs) are an attractive class of materials due to the combined advantages of high active surface area, enhanced electrochemical properties, and stability. Among the 2D TMOs, 2D tungsten oxide (WO3) nanosheets possess great potential in electrochemical applications, particularly in electrochromic (EC) devices. However, feasible production of 2D WO3 nanosheets is challenging due to the innate 3D crystallographic structure of WO3. Here we report a novel solution-phase synthesis of 2D WO3 nanosheets through simple oxidation from 2D tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets exfoliated from bulk WS2 powder. The complete conversion from WS2 into WO3 was confirmed through crystallographic and elemental analyses, followed by validation of the 2D WO3 nanosheets applied in the EC device. Current wireless power transfer (WPT) systems have limited charging distance and high induced electromagnetic field (EMF) leakage. Thus, we first proposed a thin printed circuit board (PCB) type hybrid metamaterial slab (HMS) combining two kinds of metamaterial cell structures. The metamaterial cells in the center area of the HMS have zero relative permeability and straighten the magnetic field direction. The metamaterial cells located at the edges of the HMS have negative relative permeability and change the outgoing magnetic fields to opposite direction by magnetic boundary condition. Therefore, the magnetic field can be more confined between transmitter and receiver coils, enhancing the power transfer efficiency, while decreasing the EMF leakage in a WPT system. In this paper, we demonstrated that increased power transfer efficiency from 34.5% to 41.7% and reduced EMF leakage from −19.21 to −26.03 dBm in 6.78-MHz WPT system. Furthermore, we proposed new analysis method for relative permeability measurement of the metamaterial using a novel cubic structure with perfect electrical conductor and perfect magnetic conductor boundary.

Not all loads contribute to fatigue crack propagation in the welded detail of steel bridges when they are subjected to variable amplitude loading. For fatigue assessment, therefore, non-contributing stress cycles should be truncated. However, stress range truncation is not considered during typical fatigue reliability assessment. When applying the first order reliability method, stress range truncation occurs mismatch between the expected number of cycles to failure and the number of cycles obtained at the time of evaluation, because the expected number of cycles only counts the stress cycles that contribute to fatigue crack growth. Herein, we introduce a calibration factor to coordinate the expected number of cycles to failure to the equivalent value which includes both contributing and non-contributing stress cycles. The effectiveness of stress range truncation and the proposed calibration factor was validated via case studies.

High-quality rubrene crystals were directly grown on a polymeric gate dielectric-coated ITO/glass substrate by a simple solution process. Organic field-effect transistors were fabricated based on these rubrene crystals, and their electrical performance was investigated. Atomic force micrographs of the rubrene crystal reveal that its surface has a conventional terrace structure, confirming the well-ordered rubrene molecules. The organic transistor with the rubrene crystal shows the highest charge carrier hole mobility of 3.74 cm2/V·s that can be attributed to the strong π-π overlap between the adjacent rubrene molecules. The device shows a stable static and dynamic electrical stress response under ambient conditions. For evaluating the applicability of the transistor in a logic circuit, a simple load-type inverter is fabricated by combining the rubrene transistor and a 10 MΩ load-resistor, to achieve a clear dynamic switching response up to 100 Hz.

Considering the environmental issues, it is essential to develop highly efficient and recyclable photocatalysts in purification systems. Conventional TiO2 nanoparticles have strong intrinsic oxidizing power and high surface area, but are difficult to collect after use and rarely absorb visible light, resulting in low photocatalytic efficiency under sunlight. Here we develop a new type of highly efficient and recyclable photocatalyst made of a three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured N-doped TiO2 monolith with enhanced visible light absorption. To prepare the sample, an ultrathin TiN layer (∼10 nm) was conformally coated using atomic layer deposition (ALD) on 3D nanostructured TiO2. Subsequent thermal annealing at low temperature (550 °C) converted TiN to anatase phase N-doped TiO2. The resulting 3D N-doped TiO2 showed ∼33% enhanced photocatalytic performance compared to pure 3D TiO2 of equivalent thickness under sunlight due to the reduced bandgap, from 3.2 eV to 2.75 eV through N-doping. The 3D N-doped TiO2 monolith could be easily collected and reused at least 5 times without any degradation in photocatalytic performance.

ZnO is a potential thermoelectric material because of its non-toxicity, high thermal stability, and relatively high Seebeck coefficient (S) of metal oxides. However, the extremely low figure of merit (zT), which comes from a high thermal conductivity (κ) over 40 W m-1 K-1, limits the thermoelectric application of ZnO. In this paper, we propose glass-interposer (GI) electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure with defected ground plane (DGP) for efficient and broadband suppression of power/ground noise coupling. We designed, fabricated, measured, and analyzed a GI-EBG structure with DGP for the first time. The proposed GI-EBG structure with DGP is thoroughly analyzed using the dispersion characteristics and estimated stopband edges, $f_{L}$ and $f_{U}$ . We experimentally verified that the proposed GI-EBG structure with DGP achieved power/ground noise isolation bandgap (below −30 dB) between $f_{L}$ of 5.7 GHz and $f_{U}$ of 11 GHz. Estimation of $f_{L}$ and $f_{U}$ using dispersion analysis, full 3-D electromagnetic (EM) simulation results, and measurement results achieved good correlation. Effectiveness of the proposed GI-EBG structure with DGP on suppression of the power/ground noise coupling to high-speed through glass via (TGV) channel is verified with 3-D EM simulation. As a result, the proposed EBG structure successfully and efficiently suppressed the power/ground noise coupling and improved the eye diagram of the TGV channel. Lastly, we embedded thin alumina film in the proposed EBG structure and achieved even broader power/ground noise suppression between 2.1 and 14.7 GHz.

As a demand for electrical systems with a wide data bandwidth has increased, high-performance packages ensuring high data rates, such as low power double data rate series, have become common. The need for high-performance test sockets has also emerged to test these packages. However, a conventional pogo pin socket has a limited test bandwidth due to the parasitic components arising from its spring. On the other hand, a silicone rubber socket satisfies the wide bandwidth requirement because it has low parasitic components due to high-density conductive metal powders in an elastic silicone rubber. In this paper, we propose an RLGC equivalent circuit model of a silicone rubber socket and first experimentally verify it. The proposed model is experimentally verified in the frequency domain by comparing the insertion loss obtained from the proposed model to the measurement up to 20 GHz. The proposed model is experimentally verified in the time domain by comparing the eye diagrams obtained from the proposed model to the measurement at a data rate of 12.5 Gb/s. Also, the insertion loss of the sockets with varied height, diameter, and pitch is analyzed using the proposed model. The proposed model provides physical insight of a silicone rubber socket, and it allows to determine whether a socket is reliable for testing high performance packages in a short time. It also gives us the idea how to design a high-performance test socket. Furthermore, we discuss the current capacity and life cycle of the silicone rubber socket in terms of signal integrity as well.

With the advent of the Internet-of-Things paradigm, the amount of data production has grown exponentially and the user demand for responsive consumption of data has increased significantly. Herein, we present DART, a fast and lightweight stream processing framework for the IoT environment. Because the DART framework targets a geospatially distributed environment of heterogeneous devices, the framework provides (1) an end-user tool for device registration and application authoring, (2) automatic worker node monitoring and task allocations, and (3) runtime management of user applications with fault tolerance. To maximize performance, the DART framework adopts an actor model in which applications are segmented into microtasks and assigned to an actor following a single responsibility. To prove the feasibility of the proposed framework, we implemented the DART system. We also conducted experiments to show that the system can significantly reduce computing burdens and alleviate network load by utilizing the idle resources of intermediate edge devices.

In multiple regression in high dimension, we propose a method for computation of tolerance limits based on ridge regression and provide numerical studies to show the advantage of tighter tolerance limit from ridge regression compared to existing methods.

In this paper, we consider the classification problem of functional data including the sleeping energy expenditure (SEE) data, focusing on functional classification. Many existing classification rules are not effective in distinguishing the two classes of SEE data, because the trajectories of each observation have very different patterns for each class. It is often observed that some aspect of data such as the variability of paths is helpful in classification of functional data. To reflect this issue, we introduce a variable measuring the length of path in functional data and then propose a logistic model with fused lasso that considers the behavior of fluctuation of path as well as local correlations within each path. Our proposed model shows a significant improvement over some models used in the existing literature on the classification accuracy rate of functional data such as SEE data. We carry out simulation studies to show the finite sample performance and the gain that it makes in comparison with fused lasso without considering path length. With two more real datasets studied in some existing literature, we demonstrate that the new model achieves better or similar accuracy rate than the best accuracy rates reported in those studies.

In this paper, we first propose a fast and accurate deep neural network (DNN) model extension method for signal integrity (SI) applications. Reusing pre-trained weights of DNN model, the model can be extended when new training data are given. Instead of updating whole weights of DNN in traditional machine learning (ML) approaches, fine-tuning of a part of weights can accelerate training. For verification, we applied the proposed method to regression model of peak time domain reflectometry (TDR) impedance of through hole via (THV) and classification model of through silicon via (TSV) void defects. Training time of the proposed method were 0.3 s and 2.3 s respectively, which are 99 % and 82.3 % reduction compared to the traditional approach. Moreover, test accuracy of the proposed method achieved 99.2 % and 100 %, respectively.

Protein or peptide higher order structure (HOS) is a quality attribute that could affect therapeutic efficacy and safety. Where appropriate, the HOS similarity between a proposed follow-on product and the reference listed drug should be demonstrated during regulatory assessment. Establishing quantitative HOS similarity for 2 drug substances, manufactured by different processes, has been challenging. Herein, HOS differences among U.S. marketed insulin drug products (DPs) were quantified using nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and principal component analysis (PCA). Then, the unitless Mahalanobis distance (DM) in PCA space was calculated between insulin analog reference listed drugs and their recently approved follow-on products, and all DM values were 3.29 or less. By contrast, a larger DM value of 20.5 was obtained between the 2 insulin human DPs independently approved. However, upon mass-balanced and reversible dialysis of the 2 insulin human DPs against the same buffers, the DM value was reduced to 1.19 or less. Thus, the observed range of nuclear magnetic resonance-PCA-derived DM values can be used as a robust and sensitive measure of HOS similarity. Overall, the DM values of 3.3 for DP and 1.2 for drug substances using insulin therapeutics represented realistic and achievable similarity metrics for developing generic or biosimilar drugs, quality assurance, or control.

As technology advanced, the demand for data bandwidth has been increasing. To meet this demand, the data rate of the channel has been increased, which causes a lot of signal integrity problems. Optimization of the channel is important to solve these problems. Channels are usually optimized with the empirical knowledge of signal integrity designers. However, it is not accurate and requires numerous iterations. On the other hand, a Bayesian optimization method can quickly find optimized parameter values without relying on empirical knowledge. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for optimizing high-speed channel using Bayesian optimization. The proposed method optimizes the frequency response result such as insertion loss, and find the optimal physical dimension parameters. Finally, the optimized results of the proposed method were verified by comparing all the simulation results in the range of the channel.

This paper compared a coaxial silicone rubber socket and non-coaxial socket for high-performance package test. The silicone rubber socket is a kind of the elastomer test sockets consisting of metal powders in the elastomer material. The noncoaxial silicone rubber socket may have the limited electrical performances due to its pitch. Because the pitch is determined by the package's footprint. For this, the coaxial silicone rubber socket was proposed to provide the improved insertion loss and crosstalk noise. The coaxial silicone rubber socket has extra ground powders around the signal powders to configure the coaxial structure. This coaxial structure has advantages in characteristic impedance matching and crosstalk noise reduction. Therefore, this paper compared the insertion loss and crosstalk for the non-coaxial and coaxial silicone rubber socket.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a unique tool for conformally depositing inorganic thin films with precisely controlled thickness at nanoscale. Recently, ALD has been used in the manufacture of inorganic thin films using a three-dimensional (3D) nanonetwork structure made of polymer as a template, which is pre-formed by advanced 3D nanofabrication techniques such as electrospinning, block-copolymer (BCP) lithography, direct laser writing (DLW), multibeam interference lithography (MBIL), and phase-mask interference lithography (PMIL). The key technical requirement of this polymer template-assisted ALD is to perform the deposition process at a lower temperature, preserving the nanostructure of the polymer template during the deposition process. This review focuses on the successful cases of conformal deposition of inorganic thin films on 3D polymer nanonetworks using thermal ALD or plasma-enhanced ALD at temperatures below 200 °C. Recent applications and prospects of nanostructured polymer–inorganic composites or hollow inorganic materials are also discussed.

Therapeutic proteins are indispensable in the treatment of various human diseases. Despite the many benefits of therapeutic proteins, they also exhibit diverse side effects. Therefore, reducing unwanted side effects of therapeutic proteins as well as enhancing their therapeutic efficacy are very important in developing therapeutic proteins. Urate oxidase (UOX) is a therapeutic enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of uric acid (UA) into a soluble metabolite, and it is used clinically for the treatment of hyperuricemia. Since UA degradation by UOX generates H2O2 (a cytotoxic side product), UOX was co-delivered with catalase-mimic nanoparticles (AuNPs) using biocompatible pluronic-based nanocarriers (NCs) to effectively reduce H2O2-associated toxicity in cultured cells and to enhance UA degradation efficiency in vivo. Simple temperature-dependent size changes of NCs allowed co-encapsulation of both UOX and AuNPs at a high loading efficiency without compromising critical properties, resulting in efficient modulation of a mixing ratio of UOX and AuNPs encapsulated in NCs. Co-localizing UOX and AuNPs in the NCs led to enhanced UA degradation and H2O2 removal in vitro, leading to a great reduction in H2O2-associated cytotoxicity compared with UOX alone or a free mixture of UOX and AuNPs. Furthermore, we demonstrated that co-delivery of UOX and AuNPs using NCs significantly improves in vivo UA degradation compared to simple co-injection of free UOX and AuNPs. More broadly, we showed that biocompatible pluronic-based nanocarriers can be used to deliver a target therapeutic protein along with its toxicity-eliminating agent in order to reduce side effects and enhance efficacy.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were performed to assess the potential chlorine leak scenario in the super-urban area of South Korea, where the human population density is very high and numerous buildings exist near operational water treatment facilities. Flame acceleration simulator (FLACS) was used to predict the consequence from accidental chlorine releases out of one of the water treatment facilities for the nearby area having a size of 5 km × 3 km approximately. The ability to precisely implement 3-D geometries is crucial for a successful 3-D simulation. Thus, a method was proposed to rapidly and accurately implement geometry by importing computer aided-design (CAD) files provided by a government agency, and processing them using Auto CAD and MicroStation software programs. An accidental release from an 18-ton tank was simulated with three different wind directions to determine the expected evacuation distances. Results from the study showed that the endpoint distances varied depending on the density and arrangement of the buildings. Moreover, we employed physical barriers with varying heights for mitigating the effects of toxic gas releases and simulated how effectively they decreased the concentration of released chlorine.

The selective reduction of thermal conductivity while preserving the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity is regarded as a key strategy for achieving the high dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT) of thermoelectric materials. Here, we newly propose a periodic three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure that has an ability to significantly reduce thermal conductivity, resulting in an improved ZT value of thermoelectric materials near room temperature. A 3D nanostructured thermoelectric monolith is developed by electrochemical deposition of a Bi–Sb–Te ternary alloy into a highly ordered, interstitial porous network in an epoxy template predefined by advanced lithography. The resultant inch-scale, bicontinuous nanocomposite monolith released from a substrate can be easily transferred to a customized reliable platform for evaluating thermoelectric properties. The measured thermal conductivity is only ∼0.89 W mK−1 at 350 K due to greatly increased phonon boundary scattering without any degradation in the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity, leading to an enhanced ZT value (∼0.56) which is ∼50% higher than that of an ordinary film with the same elemental composition. The 3D nanostructure developed here will provide new design opportunities for nanostructured thermoelectric materials, potentially usable in flexible thermoelectric coolers and wearable energy harvesting systems.

N-doped TiO 2 was further doped with SiO 2 to prepare SiO 2 /N-doped TiO 2 photoelectrodes with high activity in the visible region. A sol-gel process was employed to produce nanoparticles of SiO 2 /N-doped TiO 2 . The addition of SiO 2 to the metal oxide enhanced charge transfer and reduced charge recombination. With the addition of sufficient amounts of SiO 2 and N, the photoelectrodes exhibited a high surface area and strong absorption of light because of their altered absorptivity in the visible wavelength region. These characteristics enabled the production of photoelectrodes with increased charge transfer and reduced charge recombination, resulting in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with enhanced J sc values. The SiO 2 /N-doped TiO 2 photoelectrodes were characterized using a range of analysis techniques. After the J-V curve measurements, the DSSCs fabricated with the 0.1 mM SiO 2 /N-doped TiO 2 photoelectrodes exhibited the highest energy conversion efficiency of 8.68%, which was approximately 3% higher than that of the N-doped TiO 2 control groups. This high energy efficiency with the addition of SiO 2 might be due to the enhanced surface area of the photoelectrodes, allowing more dye absorption, and a decrease in electron recombination.

Development of fast and intuitive detection techniques for explosive vapors is highly desired for security applications. Among those techniques, fluorescence quenching has advantages in terms of portability and maintenance cost compared to electrically driven platforms. One of the challenging issues is the restricted sensitivity (i.e., low initial quenching and quenching saturation) caused by hindered diffusion of gaseous analytes inside a dense, solid film, and resulting limited surface area, where the target molecules are reacting. Here, multilevel 3D porous nanostructures are introduced, which possess strong fluorescence and enhanced sensing abilities, produced by a rapid and scalable lithographic technique. The cyanostilbene fluorophore with low-absorption around patterning wavelengths (≈355 nm) is newly designed to be incorporated into transparent photopolymer. The emission color and intensity of the composite films under excitation can be precisely controlled by adjusting the concentration of fluorophore based on intermolecular effects. The outstanding sensitivity of high-energetic materials such as cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) has prompted efforts by researchers in the production of less sensitive explosives by crystallization without compromising performance. One such endeavor is crystal-size reduction to nano-scales. The optimum operating conditions for producing nano-sized RDX were experimentally determined. Based on these results, computational fluid dynamics modeling and simulations were executed for scale-up purposes and identification of the influence of fluid dynamics, mixing, and heat transfer on crystal growth and production rate on commercial scales. As a result, a commercial plant was designed and operation data from the commercial crystallizers were compared with data obtained from scale-up tasks.

Multilevel hierarchical platforms that combine nano- and microstructures have been intensively explored to mimic superior properties found in nature. However, unless directly replicated from biological samples, desirable multiscale structures have been challenging to efficiently produce to date. Departing from conventional wafer-based technology, new and efficient techniques suitable for fabricating bioinspired structures are highly desired to produce three-dimensional architectures even on nonplanar substrates. Here, we report a facile approach to realize functional nanostructures on uneven microstructured platforms via scalable optical fabrication techniques. The ultrathin form (∼3 μm) of a phase grating composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) makes the material physically flexible and enables full-conformal contact with rough surfaces. The near-field optical effect can be identically generated on highly curved surfaces as a result of superior conformality. Densely packed nanodots with submicron periodicity are uniformly formed on microlens arrays with a radius of curvature that is as low as ∼28 μm. Increasing the size of the gratings causes the production area to be successfully expanded by up to 16 in(2). The "nano-on-micro" structures mimicking real compound eyes are transferred to flexible and stretchable substrates by sequential imprinting, facilitating multifunctional optical films applicable to antireflective diffusers for large-area sheet-illumination displays.

The influence of Cu doping on the function of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) dependent on Cu/N-doped TiO 2 photoelectrodes was examined. Cu/N-doped TiO 2 photoelectrodes with diverse Cu concentration were synthesized using the sol–gel process. Upon adequate addition of Cu, the nanoparticles exhibited small particle sizes, high surface area, and a significant red alteration of their absorption to the visible region in relation to Degussa P25 nanomaterials. Furthermore, the traces of Cu/N-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles enhanced the charge transfer and reduced the charge recombination. The addition of sufficient Cu and N increased the surface area, elevating the dye adsorption degree, and decreasing the level of electron recombination. A DSSC fabricated with a 1 mM Cu/N-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles accomplished 11.35% of the highest power conversion efficiency, with a short-circuit current of 22.5 mA/cm 2 . The energy conversion efficiency of this photoelectrode was approximately 37% greater than that of the control, Degussa P25. The increased energy efficiency can be resulted from the extension in surface area, which enabled larger dye charging amount, and the deduction in charge recombination, which accelerated the charge transfer.

Electroplating has been favored to date as a surface treatment technology in various industries in the development of semiconductors, automobiles, ships, and steel due to its advantages of being a simple, solution-based process, with low cost and high throughput. Recently, classical electroplating has been reborn as an advanced manufacturing process for functional materials by combining it with unconventional optical three-dimensional (3D) nanofabrication techniques capable of generating polymer templates with high-resolution 3D periodic nanostructures. The bottom-up filling behavior of electroplating rising from a seed layer makes it possible to densely fill the nanoporous network of the template with heterogeneous inorganic materials. At this time, understanding and optimizing the process parameters (e.g., additive, current density, type of current waveform, etc.) of electroplating is critical for defect control. In addition, since electroplating is generally performed near room temperature, unlike other thin film deposition techniques, structural damage to the polymer template by heat during electroplating is almost negligible. Based on the excellent compatibility of electroplating and optical 3D nanofabrication, innovative functional materials with 3D periodic nanostructures targeting electrochemical or energy-related applications have been created. In this mini review, a strategy for producing functional materials with 3D periodic nanostructures through a templating process will be covered, and the recent cases of successful applications to electrodes for energy storage devices, electrocatalysts, and thermoelectric materials will be summarized. We will also discuss technical issues that need to be considered in the process to improve the quality of the resulting functional materials with 3D nanoarchitectures.

Conjugation of serum albumin or one of its ligands (such as fatty acid) has been an effective strategy to prolong the serum half-lives of drugs via neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn)&ndash, mediated recycling of albumin. So far, fatty acid (FA) has been effective in prolonging the serum half-lives for therapeutic peptides and small proteins, but not for large therapeutic proteins. Very recently, it was reported a large protein conjugated to FA competes with the binding of FcRn with serum albumin, leading to limited serum half-life extension, because primary FA binding sites in serum albumin partially overlap with FcRn binding sites. In order to prevent such competition, longer linkers between FA and the large proteins were required. Herein, we hypothesized that small proteins do not cause substantial competition for FcRn binding to albumin, resulting in the extended serum half-life. Using a small protein (28 kDa), we investigated whether the intramolecular distance in FA-protein conjugate affects the FcRn binding with albumin and serum half-life using linkers with varying lengths. Unlike with the FA-conjugated large protein, all FA-conjugated small proteins with different linkers exhibited comparable the FcRn binding to albumin and extended serum half-life.

As technology develops, the amount of data used increases exponentially and the operating speed of electronic devices increases accordingly. As the operating speed increases, the transmission speed of data exchanged through the channel also increases. To get an eye-diagram, a time-domain simulation is required, which consumes a lot of time and computer power. However, a channel simulation in frequency-domain is fast and it consumes less computer power. Therefore, using the frequency-domain simulation data is more efficient than the time-domain simulation. This paper proposes an eye-width and eye-height estimation method using an artificial neural network (ANN). The input of the ANN is insertion loss and the outputs of the ANN are eye-width and eye-height. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is verified by transient eye-diagram simulations with arbitrarily-selected channel parameters.

In this paper, for the first time, we propose a reinforcement learning-based optimal on-board decoupling capacitor (decap) design method. The proposed method can provide optimal decap designs for a given on-board power distribution network (PDN). An optimal decap design refers to the optimized combination of decaps at proper positions to satisfy a required target impedance. Moreover, a minimum number of decaps should be assigned for optimal decap designs. The proposed method is applied to the test on-board PDN and successfully provided 37 optimal decap designs with 4 decaps assigned each. Self impedance of PDN with the provided design satisfied the required target impedance while minimizing the number of assigned decaps.
