1. A Multilevel Inverter Configuration for an Open-End-Winding Pole-Phase-Modulated-Multiphase Induction Motor Drive Using Dual Inverter Principle

Abstract: This paper presents a multilevel inverter (MLI) configuration for open-end-winding pole-phase-modulated-multiphase induction motor (PPMMIM) drives. The proposed MLI configuration consists of one nine-phase two-level inverter and three 3-Φ two-level inverters. In pole–phase modulation, increasing the number of poles decreases the number of phases that increases the space harmonics in air gap flux. Moreover, in high-pole mode of PPMMIM drives, two-level voltage supply causes the high torque ripple that degrades the performance of the drive. Usually, conventional MLIs are not preferred for reducing torque ripple, due to the capacitor-balancing issues and more number of semiconductor devices. To address these issues, the proposed MLI configuration effectively utilized the inherent availability of the three identical voltage coils in the high-pole mode for reducing the torque ripple. The 3-Φ carrier phase-shifted space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is used for generating the multistep voltage across the effective phase in high-pole mode as well as for shifting the lower order harmonics to higher order frequencies. Moreover, in low-pole mode, the dc-link voltage utilization of the proposed MLI configuration is improved by 13.8% with third harmonic injected SVPWM as compared to conventional 9-Φ SVPWM. Another important feature of the proposed MLI configuration is its ability to supply the two-level voltage under fault conditions. This feature notably improves the reliability of the PPMMIM drive. The finite-element method model of 5-hp nine-phase PPMMIM is designed in ANSYS Maxwell 2-D and is cosimulated with the proposed MLI configuration in Simplorer environment. The effectiveness of the proposed MLI-fed 5-hp MIM drive is experimentally verified for the entire modulation range.

2. Torque Ripple Minimization of PPMIM Drives with Phase-Shifted Carrier PWM

Abstract: The interest on Multiphase induction motor drives with pole-phase modulation is intensifying in traction, ship propulsion and electrical vehicles applications due to their potential benefits over the three phase induction motor drives. However, in PPM the number of poles and phase are varied in a perpetual manner for attaining the wider speed and torque characteristics. For meeting the high torque requirement of these applications poles has to be increased in PPM. This increment in number of poles leads to higher magnitude of space harmonics in airgap that intensifies the torque pulsations. To address this, carrier phase shifted SVPWM (CPS-SVPWM) is proposed in this paper. For supplying the multilevel voltage across effective phase the carriers of equal voltage profile windings are displaced by an angle of 120°. This CPS-SVPWM cancels the lower center band harmonics and the remaining side bands are shifted to 6 times of the carrier frequency. In this way, the time harmonics in the airgap are reduced by supplying the multilevel voltage. The aim is to give an optimal phase shift angle between the carriers to get the better performance of the PPMIM drive. Moreover, the dc-link voltage utilization (DL VU) is improved by the 15.4 % in both pole- phase combinations with phase groping concept. The performance of the PPMIM drive with 60° and 120° CPS-SVPWMs are compared w.r.t their pros and cons. The proposed 120° CPS-SVPWM concept is executed with Maxwell 2-D finite analysis (FEM analysis) by implementing a 5hp PPMIM FEM model. Further the efficacy of this concept is validated by using laboratory porotype of 9-phase 5hp PPMIM drive. The PPMIM drive is controlled with SPARTAN-6 FPGA board, where the switching algorithm is written using VHDL.

Abstract: Multiphase induction motor (MIM) drives are becoming popular for high-power applications because of fault tolerant capability and wide range speed-torque characteristics. Using pole-phase modulation (PPM) technique, it is able to give high-torque for faster acceleration as well as high speed during steady operation. To achieve both these features, the MIM drive requires higher number of stator slots that may increase size and weight of the drive. However, these two major constraints limit the pole phase modulated MIM (PPMMIM) drives for medium and low power applications. To address these issues, in this paper a fractional-slot multilayer winding (FSMLW) for PPMMIM drive is proposed for getting multi-speed ratios with the conventional 36 slots stator core frame. This FSMLW improves the harmonic profile in the air gap magneto-motive force (MMF) and efficiency of the PPMMIM drive. In addition, generalization of the PPM is revised by considering number of layers per slot. The proposed MIM drive operates in 15-phase 2-pole mode, 5-phase 6-pole mode and 3-phase 10-pole modes by using PPM. With these three pole-phase combinations, the drive is capable to runs at 1:3:5 speed ratios. The proposed 36-slot PPMMIM drive facilitates wider range of speed-torque characteristics with FSMLW. This can make it suitable for medium and low power applications. The effectiveness of the proposed MIM drive with FSMLW is verified by using FEM analysis using ANSYS Maxwell-2D. A two-level inverter is designed in Simplorer environment for co-simulating the proposed MIM drive.

Abstract: DES Collaboration: T. M. C. Abbott et al., We present the first cosmology results from large-scale structure using the full 5000 deg2 of imaging data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release 1. We perform an analysis of large-scale structure combining three two-point correlation functions (3×2pt): (i) cosmic shear using 100 million source galaxies, (ii) galaxy clustering, and (iii) the cross-correlation of source galaxy shear with lens galaxy positions, galaxy–galaxy lensing. To achieve the cosmological precision enabled by these measurements has required updates to nearly every part of the analysis from DES Year 1, including the use of two independent galaxy clustering samples, modeling advances, and several novel improvements in the calibration of gravitational shear and photometric redshift inference. The analysis was performed under strict conditions to mitigate confirmation or observer bias; we describe specific changes made to the lens galaxy sample following unblinding of the results and tests of the robustness of our results to this decision. We model the data within the flat ΛCDM and wCDM cosmological models, marginalizing over 25 nuisance parameters. We find consistent cosmological results between the three two-point correlation functions; their combination yields clustering amplitude S8=0.776+0.017−0.017 and matter density Ωm=0.339+0.032−0.031 in ΛCDM, mean with 68% confidence limits; S8=0.775+0.026−0.024, Ωm=0.352+0.035−0.041, and dark energy equation-of-state parameter w=−0.98+0.32−0.20 in wCDM. These constraints correspond to an improvement in signal-to-noise of the DES Year 3 3×2pt data relative to DES Year 1 by a factor of 2.1, about 20% more than expected from the increase in observing area alone. This combination of DES data is consistent with the prediction of the model favored by the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) primary anisotropy data, which is quantified with a probability-to-exceed p=0.13–0.48. We find better agreement between DES 3×2pt and Planck than in DES Y1, despite the significantly improved precision of both. When combining DES 3×2pt data with available baryon acoustic oscillation, redshift-space distortion, and type Ia supernovae data, we find p=0.34. Abstract: DES collaboration: et al., The DMASS sample is a photometric sample from the DES Year 1 data set designed to replicate the properties of the CMASS sample from BOSS, in support of a joint analysis of DES and BOSS beyond the small overlapping area. In this paper, we present the measurement of galaxy–galaxy lensing using the DMASS sample as gravitational lenses in the DES Y1 imaging data. We test a number of potential systematics that can bias the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal, including those from shear estimation, photometric redshifts, and observing conditions. After careful systematic tests, we obtain a highly significant detection of the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal, with total S/N = 25.7. With the measured signal, we assess the feasibility of using DMASS as gravitational lenses equivalent to CMASS, by estimating the galaxy-matter cross-correlation coefficient rcc. By jointly fitting the galaxy–galaxy lensing measurement with the galaxy clustering measurement from CMASS, we obtain rcc=1.09+0.12−0.11 for the scale cut of 4h−1Mpc and rcc=1.06+0.13−0.12 for 12h−1Mpc in fixed cosmology. By adding the angular galaxy clustering of DMASS, we obtain rcc = 1.06 ± 0.10 for the scale cut of 4h−1Mpc and rcc = 1.03 ± 0.11 for 12h−1Mpc⁠. The resulting values of rcc indicate that the lensing signal of DMASS is statistically consistent with the one that would have been measured if CMASS had populated the DES region within the given statistical uncertainty. Abstract: DES Collaboration: A. Amon et al., This work, together with its companion paper, Secco, Samuroff et al. [Phys. Rev. D 105, 023515 (2022)], present the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 cosmic-shear measurements and cosmological constraints based on an analysis of over 100 million source galaxies. With the data spanning 4143 deg2 on the sky, divided into four redshift bins, we produce a measurement with a signal-to-noise of 40. We conduct a blind analysis in the context of the Lambda-Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) model and find a 3% constraint of the clustering amplitude, S8≡σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5=0.759+0.025−0.023. A ΛCDM-Optimized analysis, which safely includes smaller scale information, yields a 2% precision measurement of S8=0.772+0.018−0.017 that is consistent with the fiducial case. The two low-redshift measurements are statistically consistent with the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background result, however, both recovered S8 values are lower than the high-redshift prediction by 2.3σ and 2.1σ (p-values of 0.02 and 0.05), respectively. The measurements are shown to be internally consistent across redshift bins, angular scales and correlation functions. The analysis is demonstrated to be robust to calibration systematics, with the S8 posterior consistent when varying the choice of redshift calibration sample, the modeling of redshift uncertainty and methodology. Similarly, we find that the corrections included to account for the blending of galaxies shifts our best-fit S8 by 0.5σ without incurring a substantial increase in uncertainty. We examine the limiting factors for the precision of the cosmological constraints and find observational systematics to be subdominant to the modeling of astrophysics. 7. Galaxy Clustering in Harmonic Space from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 Data: Compatibility with Real-Space Results

Abstract: Andrade-Oliveira, F., et al. (DES Collaboration), We perform an analysis in harmonic space of the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 Data (DES-Y1) galaxy clustering photometric data using products obtained for the real-space analysis. We test our pipeline with a suite of lognormal simulations, which are used to validate scale cuts in harmonic space as well as to provide a covariance matrix that takes into account the DES-Y1 mask. We then apply this pipeline to DES-Y1 data taking into account survey property maps derived for the real-space analysis. We compare with real-space DES-Y1 results obtained from a similar pipeline. We show that the harmonic space analysis we develop yields results that are compatible with the real-space analysis for the bias parameters. This verification paves the way to performing a harmonic space analysis for the upcoming DES-Y3 data., The DES data management system is supported by the National Science Foundation under grant numbers AST-1138766 and AST-1536171. Abstract: Muir, J., et al. (DES Collaboration), We analyze Dark Energy Survey (DES) data to constrain a cosmological model where a subset of parameters - focusing on ωm - are split into versions associated with structure growth (e.g., ωmgrow) and expansion history (e.g., ωmgeo). Once the parameters have been specified for the ΛCDM cosmological model, which includes general relativity as a theory of gravity, it uniquely predicts the evolution of both geometry (distances) and the growth of structure over cosmic time. Any inconsistency between measurements of geometry and growth could therefore indicate a breakdown of that model. Our growth-geometry split approach therefore serves both as a (largely) model-independent test for beyond-ΛCDM physics, and as a means to characterize how DES observables provide cosmological information. We analyze the same multiprobe DES data as [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 171301 (2019)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.122.171301]: DES Year 1 (Y1) galaxy clustering and weak lensing, which are sensitive to both growth and geometry, as well as Y1 BAO and Y3 supernovae, which probe geometry. We additionally include external geometric information from BOSS DR12 BAO and a compressed Planck 2015 likelihood, and external growth information from BOSS DR12 RSD. We find no significant disagreement with ωmgrow=ωmgeo. When DES and external data are analyzed separately, degeneracies with neutrino mass and intrinsic alignments limit our ability to measure ωmgrow, but combining DES with external data allows us to constrain both growth and geometric quantities. We also consider a parametrization where we split both ωm and w, but find that even our most constraining data combination is unable to separately constrain ωmgrow and wgrow. Relative to ΛCDM, splitting growth and geometry weakens bounds on σ8 but does not alter constraints on h., The DES data management system is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grants No. AST-1138766 and No. AST-1536171. Abstract: Jeffrey, N., et al. DES Collaboration, We present reconstructed convergence maps, mass maps, from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) third year (Y3) weak gravitational lensing data set. The mass maps are weighted projections of the density field (primarily dark matter) in the foreground of the observed galaxies. We use four reconstruction methods, each is a maximum a posteriori estimate with a different model for the prior probability of the map: Kaiser–Squires, null B-mode prior, Gaussian prior, and a sparsity prior. All methods are implemented on the celestial sphere to accommodate the large sky coverage of the DES Y3 data. We compare the methods using realistic ΛCDM simulations with mock data that are closely matched to the DES Y3 data. We quantify the performance of the methods at the map level and then apply the reconstruction methods to the DES Y3 data, performing tests for systematic error effects. The maps are compared with optical foreground cosmic-web structures and are used to evaluate the lensing signal from cosmic-void profiles. The recovered dark matter map covers the largest sky fraction of any galaxy weak lensing map to date., The DES data management system is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Numbers AST-1138766 and AST-1536171. Abstract: DES Collaboration: M. Rodríguez-Monroy, N. Weaverdyck, J. Elvin-Poole et al., In this work, we present the galaxy clustering measurements of the two DES lens galaxy samples: a magnitude-limited sample optimized for the measurement of cosmological parameters, MAGLIM, and a sample of luminous red galaxies selected with the REDMAGIC algorithm. MAGLIM/REDMAGIC sample contains over 10 million/2.5 million galaxies and is divided into six/five photometric redshift bins spanning the range z ∈ [0.20, 1.05]/z ∈ [0.15, 0.90]. Both samples cover 4143 deg2 over which we perform our analysis blind, measuring the angular correlation function with an S/N ∼ 63 for both samples. In a companion paper, these measurements of galaxy clustering are combined with the correlation functions of cosmic shear and galaxy–galaxy lensing of each sample to place cosmological constraints with a 3 × 2pt analysis. We conduct a thorough study of the mitigation of systematic effects caused by the spatially varying survey properties and we correct the measurements to remove artificial clustering signals. We employ several decontamination methods with different configurations to ensure the robustness of our corrections and to determine the systematic uncertainty that needs to be considered for the final cosmology analyses. Abstract: International audience; Spoken dialogue systems typically use one or several (top-N) ASR sequence(s) for inferring the semantic meaning and tracking the state of the dialogue. However, ASR graphs, such as confusion networks (confnets), provide a compact representation of a richer hypothesis space than a top-N ASR list. In this paper, we study the benefits of using confusion networks with a neural dialogue state tracker (DST). We encode the 2-dimensional confnet into a 1-dimensional sequence of embed-dings using a confusion network encoder which can be used with any DST system. Our confnet encoder is plugged into the 'Global-locally Self-Attentive Dialogue State Tacker' (GLAD) model for DST and obtains significant improvements in both accuracy and inference time compared to using top-N ASR hypotheses .

Abstract: We present constraints on extensions of the minimal cosmological models dominated by dark matter and dark energy, $\Lambda$CDM and $w$CDM, by using a combined analysis of galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing from the first-year data of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y1) in combination with external data. We consider four extensions of the minimal dark energy-dominated scenarios: 1) nonzero curvature $\Omega_k$, 2) number of relativistic species $N_{\rm eff}$ different from the standard value of 3.046, 3) time-varying equation-of-state of dark energy described by the parameters $w_0$ and $w_a$ (alternatively quoted by the values at the pivot redshift, $w_p$, and $w_a$), and 4) modified gravity described by the parameters $\mu_0$ and $\Sigma_0$ that modify the metric potentials. We also consider external information from Planck CMB measurements; BAO measurements from SDSS, 6dF, and BOSS; RSD measurements from BOSS; and SNIa information from the Pantheon compilation. Constraints on curvature and the number of relativistic species are dominated by the external data; when these are combined with DES Y1, we find $\Omega_k=0.0020^{+0.0037}_{-0.0032}$ at the 68% confidence level, and $N_{\rm eff}, Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, matches the published version

Abstract: The combination of multiple observational probes has long been advocated as a powerful technique to constrain cosmological parameters, in particular dark energy. The Dark Energy Survey has measured 207 spectroscopically--confirmed Type Ia supernova lightcurves; the baryon acoustic oscillation feature; weak gravitational lensing; and galaxy clustering. Here we present combined results from these probes, deriving constraints on the equation of state, $w$, of dark energy and its energy density in the Universe. Independently of other experiments, such as those that measure the cosmic microwave background, the probes from this single photometric survey rule out a Universe with no dark energy, finding $w=-0.80^{+0.09}_{-0.11}$. The geometry is shown to be consistent with a spatially flat Universe, and we obtain a constraint on the baryon density of $\Omega_b=0.069^{+0.009}_{-0.012}$ that is independent of early Universe measurements. These results demonstrate the potential power of large multi-probe photometric surveys and pave the way for order of magnitude advances in our constraints on properties of dark energy and cosmology over the next decade., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; v3 matches version accepted by PRL

Abstract: We use data from the first-year (Y1) observations of the DES collaboration to measure the galaxy angular power spectrum (APS), and search for its BAO feature using a template-fitting method. We test our methodology in a sample of 1800 DES Y1-like mock catalogs. The APS is measured with the pseudo-$C_\ell$ method, using pixelized maps constructed from the mock catalogs and the DES mask. The covariance matrix of the $C_\ell$'s in these tests are also obtained from the mock catalogs. We use templates to model the measured spectra and estimate template parameters firstly from the $C_\ell$'s of the mocks using two different methods, a maximum likelihood estimator and a MCMC, finding consistent results with a good reduced $\chi^2$. Robustness tests are performed to estimate the impact of different choices of settings used in our analysis. After these tests on mocks, we apply our method to a galaxy sample constructed from DES Y1 data specifically for LSS studies. The sample is dominated by luminous red galaxies located at redshifts $z \gtrsim 0.6$. We define the exact selection using color and magnitude cuts that balance the need of high number densities and small photometric redshift uncertainties, using the corresponding forecasted BAO distance error as a figure-of-merit in the process. The typical photo-$z$ uncertainty varies from $2.3\%$ to $3.6\%$ (in units of 1+$z$) from $z=0.6$ to $1$, with number densities from $200$ to $130$ galaxies per deg$^2$ in tomographic bins of width $\Delta z = 0.1$. Next we summarise the validation of the photometric redshift estimation. We characterise and mitigate observational systematics including stellar contamination, and show that the clustering on large scales is robust in front of those contaminants. We show that the clustering signal in the auto-correlations and cross-correlations is generally consistent with theoretical models, which serves as an additional test of the redshift distributions., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: International audience; YCrO3 (YCO) perovskite has been originally reported to be a biferroic with antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric (FE) properties, in which the origin of FE in YCO remains ambiguous. However, further studies reveal the presence of a global orthorhombic Pnma structure with a local structural heterogeneity. In this study, we discuss the high temperature phonon modes and their inter-relation to local structural distortions in YCO perovskite through Raman spectroscopy experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We observe that the Raman active B3g(3) out of phase scissor mode (SM) disappears above the dielectric transition temperature (T c) commensurate with the local structural distortions. DFT calculations show that the transformation of a room temperature Y-cation distorted orthorhombic structure to a perfect orthorhombic structure above the dielectric transition temperature in which the Y cation is undisplaced could lead to the conversion of SM with symmetry B3g to Raman inactive B1u mode.

Abstract: International audience; A flat specimen of sub-microcrystalline nickel was tensile tested at 4 K until fracture occurred and subsequently investigated by electron backscatter diffraction in a high resolution scanning electron microscope in order to deduce the local texture in the near crack area. Thus, two sets of intersecting fine slip markings observed on the surface (under +/- 55 degrees with respect to the tensile axis) could be explained as a result of localized simple shear in the bulk material underneath the slip markings. The overall amount of shear in the region near the crack was estimated to be 1.25 based on texture simulations using the viscoplastic self-consistent polycrystal model.

Abstract: International audience; Cyclic deformation of sub-microcrystalline nickel at high plastic strain amplitude generated macro shear bands, causing fatal cracking. The macro shear bands consisted of several micro shear bands, each band containing a single layer of elliptical grains that appeared at less than 50 degrees with respect to the loading axis. Micro texture investigations in micro shear bands revealed almost the same texture with similar shear values as in macro shear bands. During cyclic deformation local overlapping of evolving micro shear bands resulted in formation of fatal macro shear bands.

Abstract: We present angular diameter distance measurements obtained by locating the BAO scale in the distribution of galaxies selected from the first year of Dark Energy Survey data. We consider a sample of over 1.3 million galaxies distributed over a footprint of 1318 deg$^2$ with $0.6 < z_{\rm photo} < 1$ and a typical redshift uncertainty of $0.03(1+z)$. This sample was selected, as fully described in a companion paper, using a color/magnitude selection that optimizes trade-offs between number density and redshift uncertainty. We investigate the BAO signal in the projected clustering using three conventions, the angular separation, the co-moving transverse separation, and spherical harmonics. Further, we compare results obtained from template based and machine learning photometric redshift determinations. We use 1800 simulations that approximate our sample in order to produce covariance matrices and allow us to validate our distance scale measurement methodology. We measure the angular diameter distance, $D_A$, at the effective redshift of our sample divided by the true physical scale of the BAO feature, $r_{\rm d}$. We obtain close to a 4 per cent distance measurement of $D_A(z_{\rm eff}=0.81)/r_{\rm d} = 10.75\pm 0.43 $. These results are consistent with the flat $��$CDM concordance cosmological model supported by numerous other recent experimental results. Abstract: We present cosmological results from a combined analysis of galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing, using 1321 deg$^2$ of $griz$ imaging data from the first year of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y1). We combine three two-point functions: (i) the cosmic shear correlation function of 26 million source galaxies in four redshift bins, (ii) the galaxy angular autocorrelation function of 650,000 luminous red galaxies in five redshift bins, and (iii) the galaxy-shear cross-correlation of luminous red galaxy positions and source galaxy shears. To demonstrate the robustness of these results, we use independent pairs of galaxy shape, photometric redshift estimation and validation, and likelihood analysis pipelines. To prevent confirmation bias, the bulk of the analysis was carried out while blind to the true results; we describe an extensive suite of systematics checks performed and passed during this blinded phase. The data are modeled in flat $\Lambda$CDM and $w$CDM cosmologies, marginalizing over 20 nuisance parameters, varying 6 (for $\Lambda$CDM) or 7 (for $w$CDM) cosmological parameters including the neutrino mass density and including the 457 $\times$ 457 element analytic covariance matrix. We find consistent cosmological results from these three two-point functions, and from their combination obtain $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8 (\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5} = 0.783^{+0.021}_{-0.025}$ and $\Omega_m = 0.264^{+0.032}_{-0.019}$ for $\Lambda$CDM for $w$CDM, we find $S_8 = 0.794^{+0.029}_{-0.027}$, $\Omega_m = 0.279^{+0.043}_{-0.022}$, and $w=-0.80^{+0.20}_{-0.22}$ at 68% CL. The precision of these DES Y1 results rivals that from the Planck cosmic microwave background measurements, allowing a comparison of structure in the very early and late Universe on equal terms. Abstract: DES Collaboration: G. Zacharegkas et al., Galaxy–galaxy lensing is a powerful probe of the connection between galaxies and their host dark matter haloes, which is important both for galaxy evolution and cosmology. We extend the measurement and modelling of the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal in the recent Dark Energy Survey Year 3 cosmology analysis to the highly non-linear scales (∼100 kpc). This extension enables us to study the galaxy–halo connection via a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) framework for the two lens samples used in the cosmology analysis: a luminous red galaxy sample (REDMAGIC) and a magnitude-limited galaxy sample (MAGLIM). We find that REDMAGIC (MAGLIM) galaxies typically live in dark matter haloes of mass log10(Mh/M⊙) ≈ 13.7 which is roughly constant over redshift (13.3−13.5 depending on redshift). We constrain these masses to ∼15 per cent ⁠, approximately 1.5 times improvement over the previous work. We also constrain the linear galaxy bias more than five times better than what is inferred by the cosmological scales only. We find the satellite fraction for REDMAGIC (MAGLIM) to be ∼0.1−0.2 (0.1−0.3) with no clear trend in redshift. Our constraints on these halo properties are broadly consistent with other available estimates from previous work, large-scale constraints, and simulations.
