We introduce a graph Ramsey game called Ramsey, Paper, Scissors. This game has two players, Proposer and Decider. Starting from an empty graph on $n$ vertices, on each turn Proposer proposes a potential edge and Decider simultaneously decides (without knowing Proposer's choice) whether to add it to the graph. Proposer cannot propose an edge which would create a triangle in the graph. The game ends when Proposer has no legal moves remaining, and Proposer wins if the final graph has independence number at least $s$. We prove a threshold phenomenon exists for this game by exhibiting randomized strategies for both players that are optimal up to constants. Namely, there exist constants $0B\sqrt{n}\log{n}$. This is a factor of $\Theta(\sqrt{\log{n}})$ larger than the lower bound coming from the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(3,s)$.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the main result in the paper by D.Y. Gao and X. Lu [On the extrema of a nonconvex functional with double-well potential in 1D, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. (2016) 67:62]. More precisely we provide a detailed study of the problem considered in that paper, pointing out the importance of the norm on the space $C^{1}[a,b]$; because no norm (topology) is mentioned on $C^{1}[a,b]$ we look at it as being a subspace of $W^{1,p}(a,b)$ for $p\in [1,\infty]$ endowed with its usual norm. We show that the objective function has not local extrema with the mentioned constraints for $p\in [1,4)$, and has (up to an additive constant) only a local maximizer for $p=\infty$, unlike the conclusion of the main result of the discussed paper where it is mentioned that there are (up to additive constants) two local minimizers and a local maximizer. We also show that the same conclusions are valid for the similar problem treated in the preprint by X. Lu and D.Y. Gao [On the extrema of a nonconvex functional with double-well potential in higher dimensions, arXiv:1607.03995]., 12 pages; in this version we added the forgotten condition $F(x) \ne 0$ for $x\in (a,b)$ on page 3

In this short paper, we extend the classical Hoffman-Meeks Halfspace Theorem [Hoffman and Meeks, 'The strong halfspace theorem for minimal surfaces', Invent. Math. 101 (1990) 373-377] to self-shrinkers, that is: Let $P$ be a hyperplane passing through the origin. The only properly immersed self-shrinker $\Sigma $ contained in one of the closed half-space determined by $P$ is $\Sigma = P$. Our proof is geometric and uses a catenoid type hypersurface discovered by Kleene-Moller [Kleene and Moller, 'Self-shrinkers with a rotational symmetry', Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 366 (2014) 3943-3963]. Also, using a similar geometric idea, we obtain that the only self-shrinker properly immersed in an closed cylinder $ \overline {B^{k+1} (R)} \times {\mathbb R}^{n-k}\subset {\mathbb R}^{n+1}$, for some $k\in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ and radius $R$, $R \leqslant \sqrt {2k}$, is the cylinder ${\mathbb S}^k (\sqrt {2k}) \times {\mathbb R}^{n-k}$. We also extend the above results for $\lambda $-hypersurfaces.

When the reduced twisted $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$ of a non-principal groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ admits a Cartan subalgebra, Renault's work on Cartan subalgebras implies the existence of another groupoid description of $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$. In an earlier paper, joint with Reznikoff and Wright, we identified situations where such a Cartan subalgebra arises from a subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the original groupoids $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{G}$ and the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to the Cartan pair. We first identify the spectrum $\mathfrak{B}$ of the Cartan subalgebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{S}, c)$. We then show that the quotient groupoid $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ acts on $\mathfrak{B}$, and that the corresponding action groupoid is exactly the Weyl groupoid of the Cartan pair. Lastly we show that, if the quotient map $\mathcal{G}\to\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ admits a continuous section, then the Weyl twist is also given by an explicit continuous $2$-cocycle on $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S} \ltimes \mathfrak{B}$., 32 pages

In this paper we prove that a nodal hypersurface in P^4 with defect has at least (d-1)^2 nodes, and if it has at most 2(d-2)(d-1) nodes and d>6 then it contains either a plane or a quadric surface. Furthermore, we prove that a nodal double cover of P^3 ramified along a surface of degree 2d with defect has at least d(2d-1) nodes. Let us fix a prime $p$. The Erd\H{o}s-Ginzburg-Ziv problem asks for the minimum integer $s$ such that any collection of $s$ points in the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$ contains $p$ points whose centroid is also a lattice point in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. For large $n$, this is essentially equivalent to asking for the maximum size of a subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ without $p$ distinct elements summing to zero. In this paper, we give a new upper bound for this problem for any fixed prime $p\geq 5$ and large $n$. In particular, we prove that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ without $p$ distinct elements summing to zero has size at most $C_p\cdot \left(2\sqrt{p}\right)^n$, where $C_p$ is a constant only depending on $p$. For $p$ and $n$ going to infinity, our bound is of the form $p^{(1/2)\cdot (1+o(1))n}$, whereas all previously known upper bounds were of the form $p^{(1-o(1))n}$ (with $p^n$ being a trivial bound). Our proof uses the so-called multi-colored sum-free theorem which is a consequence of the Croot-Lev-Pach polynomial method. This method and its consequences were already applied by Naslund as well as by Fox and the author to prove bounds for the problem studied in this paper. In a paper from 2001 (Journal of the LMS), Diestel and Leader offered a proof that a connected graph has a normal spanning tree if and only if it does not contain a minor from two specific forbidden classes of graphs, all of cardinality $\aleph_1$. Unfortunately, their proof contains a gap, and their result is incorrect. In this paper, we construct a third type of obstruction: an $\aleph_1$-sized graph without a normal spanning tree that contains neither of the two types described by Diestel and Leader as a minor. Let $S \subset \Bbb R^n$ be a smooth compact hypersurface with a strictly positive second fundamental form, $E$ be the Fourier extension operator on $S$, and $X$ be a Lebesgue measurable subset of $\Bbb R^n$. If $X$ contains a ball of each radius, then the problem of determining the range of exponents $(p,q)$ for which the estimate $\| Ef \|_{L^q(X)} \leq C \| f \|_{L^p(S)}$ holds is equivalent to the restriction conjecture. In this paper, we study the estimate under the following assumption on the set $X$: there is a number $0 < \alpha \leq n$ such that $|X \cap B_R| \leq c \, R^\alpha$ for all balls $B_R$ in $\Bbb R^n$ of radius $R \geq 1$. On the left-hand side of this estimate, we are integrating the function $|Ef(x)|^q$ against the measure $\chi_X dx$. Our approach consists of replacing the characteristic function $\chi_X$ of $X$ by an appropriate weight function $H$, and studying the resulting estimate in three different regimes: small values of $\alpha$, intermediate values of $\alpha$, and large values of $\alpha$. In the first regime, we establish the estimate by using already available methods. In the second regime, we prove a weighted H\"{o}lder-type inequality that holds for general non-negative Lebesgue measurable functions on $\Bbb R^n$, and combine it with the result from the first regime. In the third regime, we borrow a recent fractal Fourier restriction theorem of Du and Zhang and combine it with the result from the second regime. The subset E is universal in the sense that it does not depend on the function f to be approximated. Further in the paper this result is adapted to the case of $${\mathcal {M}}=G/H$$ M = G / H being a homogeneous space of an infinite compact second countable Hausdorff group. As a useful illustration the case of n-spheres with spherical harmonics is discussed. The construction of the subset E and approximant g is sketched briefly at the end of the paper.

A classical theorem of Koksma states that for Lebesgue almost every $x>1$ the sequence $(x^n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly distributed modulo one. In the present paper we extend Koksma's theorem to the pair correlation setting. More precisely, we show that for Lebesgue almost every $x>1$ the pair correlations of the fractional parts of $(x^n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ are asymptotically Poissonian. In Sarkozy (2001) the third author of this paper presented two conjectures on the additive decomposability of the sequence of ”smooth” (or ”friable”) numbers. Elsholtz and Harper (2015) proved (by using sieve methods) the second (less demanding) conjecture. The goal of this paper is to extend and sharpen their result in three directions by using a different approach (based on the theory of S -unit equations).

In this paper, we prove that for the oper stratification of the de Rham moduli space $M_{\mathrm{dR}}(X,r)$, the closed oper stratum is the unique minimal stratum with dimension $r^2(g-1)+g+1$, and the open dense stratum consisting of irreducible flat bundles with stable underlying vector bundles is the unique maximal stratum., Comment: This paper comes from the last section of arXiv:1905.10765v1 as an independent paper. In this paper we study 1/k geodesics, those closed geodesics that minimize on all subintervals of length $L/k$, where $L$ is the length of the geodesic. We develop new techniques to study the minimizing properties of these curves on doubled polygons, and demonstrate a sequence of doubled polygons whose closed geodesics exhibit unbounded minimizing properties. We also compute the length of the shortest closed geodesic on doubled odd-gons and show that this length approaches 4 times the diameter., Comment: This paper is a result of a SUMRY (REU) project at Yale

In this paper we study some cube packing problems. In particular we are interested in compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n,n\geq 2$, which contain boundaries of cubes with all side lengths in $(0,1)$. We show here that such sets must have lower box dimension at least $n-0.5$ and we will also provide sharp examples. The original definition of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky has been categorified and generalised in several ways over the course of the past 20 years, giving rise to cluster theory. This study lead to Iyama and Yang's generalised cluster categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ coming from $n$-Calabi-Yau triples $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$. In this paper, we use some classic tools of homological algebra to give a deeper understanding of such categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Let $k$ be a field, $n\geq 3$ an integer and $\mathcal{T}$ a $k$-linear triangulated category with a triangulated subcategory $\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ and a subcategory $\mathcal{M}=\text{add}(M)$ such that $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$ is an $n$-Calabi-Yau triple. In this paper, we prove some properties of the triangulated categories $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Our first result gives a relation between the Hom-spaces in these categories, using limits and colimits. Our second result is a Gap Theorem in $\mathcal{T}$, showing when the truncation triangles split. Moreover, we apply our two theorems to present an alternative proof to a result by Guo, originally stated in a more specific setup of dg $k$-algebras $A$ and subcategories of the derived category of dg $A$-modules. This proves that $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ is Hom-finite and $(n-1)$-Calabi-Yau, its object $M$ is $(n-1)$-cluster tilting and the endomorphism algebras of $M$ over $\mathcal{T}$ and over $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ are isomorphic. This work has been motivated by recent papers that quantify the density of values of generic quadratic forms and other polynomials at integer points, in particular ones that use Rogers' second moment estimates. In this paper we establish such results in a very general framework. Given any subhomogeneous function (a notion to be defined) $f: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}$, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition on the approximating function $\psi$ for guaranteeing that a generic element $f\circ g$ in the $G$-orbit of $f$ is $\psi$-approximable; that is, $|f\circ g(\mathbf{v})| \le \psi(\|\mathbf{v}\|)$ for infinitely many $\mathbf{v} \in \mathbb{Z}^n$. We also deduce a sufficient condition in the case of uniform approximation. In this paper, we study noncommutative surface singularities arising from orders. The singularities we study are mild in the sense that they have finite representation type or, equivalently, are log terminal in the sense of the Mori minimal model program for orders (Chan and Ingalls in Invent Math 161(2):427–452, 2005). These were classified independently by Artin (in terms of ramification data) and Reiten–Van den Bergh (in terms of their AR-quivers). The first main goal of this paper is to connect these two classifications, by going through the finite subgroups $$G \subset {{{\,\mathrm{GL}\,}}_2}$$ , explicitly computing $$H^2(G,k^*)$$ , and then matching these up with Artin’s list of ramification data and Reiten–Van den Bergh’s AR-quivers. This provides a semi-independent proof of their classifications and extends the study of canonical orders in Chan et al. (Proc Lond Math Soc (3) 98(1):83–115, 2009) to the case of log terminal orders. A secondary goal of this paper is to study noncommutative analogues of plane curves which arise as follows. Let $$B = k_{\zeta } \llbracket x,y \rrbracket $$ be the skew power series ring where $$\zeta $$ is a root of unity, or more generally a terminal order over a complete local ring. We consider rings of the form $$A = B/(f)$$ where $$f \in Z(B)$$ which we interpret to be the ring of functions on a noncommutative plane curve. We classify those noncommutative plane curves which are of finite representation type and compute their AR-quivers.

In the first part of the paper, we clarify the connections between several algebraic objects appearing in matroid theory: both partial fields and hyperfields are fuzzy rings, fuzzy rings are tracts, and these relations are compatible with the respective matroid theories. Moreover, fuzzy rings are ordered blueprints and lie in the intersection of tracts with ordered blueprints; we call the objects of this intersection pastures. In the second part, we construct moduli spaces for matroids over pastures. We show that, for any non-empty finite set $E$, the functor taking a pasture $F$ to the set of isomorphism classes of rank-$r$ $F$-matroids on $E$ is representable by an ordered blue scheme $Mat(r,E)$, the moduli space of rank-$r$ matroids on $E$. In the third part, we draw conclusions on matroid theory. A classical rank-$r$ matroid $M$ on $E$ corresponds to a $\mathbb{K}$-valued point of $Mat(r,E)$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is the Krasner hyperfield. Such a point defines a residue pasture $k_M$, which we call the universal pasture of $M$. We show that for every pasture $F$, morphisms $k_M\to F$ are canonically in bijection with $F$-matroid structures on $M$. An analogous weak universal pasture $k_M^w$ classifies weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$. The unit group of $k_M^w$ can be canonically identified with the Tutte group of $M$. We call the sub-pasture $k_M^f$ of $k_M^w$ generated by ``cross-ratios' the foundation of $M$,. It parametrizes rescaling classes of weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$, and its unit group is coincides with the inner Tutte group of $M$. We show that a matroid $M$ is regular if and only if its foundation is the regular partial field, and a non-regular matroid $M$ is binary if and only if its foundation is the field with two elements. This yields a new proof of the fact that a matroid is regular if and only if it is both binary and orientable., 85 pages; some additional material, e.g. a new section 5.6; the terminology has been adapted to the usage in follow-up papers

We are interested in the McKay quiver $\Gamma(G)$ and skew group rings $A*G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space over a field $K$, and $A$ is a $K-G$-algebra. These skew group rings appear in Auslander's version of the McKay correspondence. In the first part of this paper we consider complex reflection groups $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$ and find a combinatorial method, making use of Young diagrams, to construct the McKay quivers for the groups $G(r,p,n)$. We first look at the case $G(1,1,n)$, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, followed by $G(r,1,n)$ for $r >1$. Then, using Clifford theory, we can determine the McKay quiver for any $G(r,p,n)$ and thus for all finite irreducible complex reflection groups up to finitely many exceptions. In the second part of the paper we consider a more conceptual approach to McKay quivers of arbitrary finite groups: we define the Lusztig algebra $\widetilde A(G)$ of a finite group $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$, which is Morita equivalent to the skew group ring $A*G$. This description gives us an embedding of the basic algebra Morita equivalent to $A*G$ into a matrix algebra over $A$., Comment: v2: minor revision, final version to appear in Algebr. Represent. Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $\chi_{\rho}(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier papers; recently it was established that the invariant is unbounded in the class of all subcubic graphs. In this paper, we prove that the packing chromatic number of any 2-connected bipartite subcubic outerplanar graph is bounded by $7$. Furthermore, we prove that every subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph has a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring, and that there exists a subcubic outerplanar graph with a triangle that does not admit a $(1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring. In addition, there exists a subcubic triangle-free outerplanar graph that does not admit a $(1,2,2,3)$-packing coloring. A similar dichotomy is shown for bipartite outerplanar graphs: every such graph admits an $S$-packing coloring for $S=(1,3,\ldots,3)$, where $3$ appears $\Delta$ times ($\Delta$ being the maximum degree of vertices), and this property does not hold if one of the integers $3$ is replaced by $4$ in the sequence $S$., Comment: 24 pages

The theory of mixed multiplicities of filtrations by $m$-primary ideals in a ring is introduced in a recent paper by Cutkosky, Sarkar and Srinivasan. In this paper, we consider the positivity of mixed multiplicities of filtrations. We show that the mixed multiplicities of filtrations must be nonnegative real numbers and give examples to show that they could be zero or even irrational. When $R$ is analytically irreducible, and $\mathcal I(1),\ldots,\mathcal I(r)$ are filtrations of $R$ by $m_R$-primary ideals, we show that all of the mixed multiplicities $e_R(\mathcal I(1)^{[d_1]},\ldots,\mathcal I(r)^{[d_r]};R)$ are positive if and only if the ordinary multiplicities $e_R(\mathcal I(i);R)$ for $1\le i\le r$ are positive. We extend this to modules and prove a simple characterization of when the mixed multiplicities are positive or zero on a finitely generated module., 15 pages

Bidimensionality Theory was introduced by [E.D. Demaine, F.V. Fomin, M.Hajiaghayi, and D.M. Thilikos. Subexponential parameterized algorithms on graphs of bounded genus and H-minor-free graphs, J. ACM, 52 (2005), pp.866--893] as a tool to obtain sub-exponential time parameterized algorithms on H-minor-free graphs. In [E.D. Demaine and M.Hajiaghayi, Bidimensionality: new connections between FPT algorithms and PTASs, in Proceedings of the 16th Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA), SIAM, 2005, pp.590--601] this theory was extended in order to obtain polynomial time approximation schemes (PTASs) for bidimensional problems. In this work, we establish a third meta-algorithmic direction for bidimensionality theory by relating it to the existence of linear kernels for parameterized problems. In particular, we prove that every minor (respectively contraction) bidimensional problem that satisfies a separation property and is expressible in Countable Monadic Second Order Logic (CMSO), admits a linear kernel for classes of graphs that exclude a fixed graph (respectively an apex graph) H as a minor. Our results imply that a multitude of bidimensional problems g graph classes. For most of these problems no polynomial kernels on H-minor-free graphs were known prior to our work., Comment: An an earlier version of this paper appeared in SODA 2010. If $G$ is a group, a virtual retract of $G$ is a subgroup which is a retract of a finite index subgroup. Most of the paper focuses on two group properties: property (LR), that all finitely generated subgroups are virtual retracts, and property (VRC), that all cyclic subgroups are virtual retracts. We study the permanence of these properties under commensurability, amalgams over retracts, graph products and wreath products. In particular, we show that (VRC) is stable under passing to finite index overgroups, while (LR) is not. The question whether all finitely generated virtually free groups satisfy (LR) motivates the remaining part of the paper, studying virtual free factors of such groups. We give a simple criterion characterizing when a finitely generated subgroup of a virtually free group is a free factor of a finite index subgroup. We apply this criterion to settle a conjecture of Brunner and Burns., 30 pages, 1 figure. v3: added Lemma 5.8 and made minor corrections following referee's comments. In our previous paper we have elaborated a certain signed count of real lines on real projective n-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree 2n-1. Contrary to the honest "cardinal" count, it is independent of the choice of a hypersurface, and by this reason provides a strong lower bound on the honest count. In this count the contribution of a line is its local input to the Euler number of a certain auxiliary vector bundle. The aim of this paper is to present other, in a sense more geometric, interpretations of this local input. One of them results from a generalization of Segre species of real lines on cubic surfaces and another from a generalization of Welschinger weights of real lines on quintic threefolds., Comment: 20 pages, typos are corrected (most essential, in Proposition 4.3.3)

Associated to a presentable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ and an object $X \in \mathcal{C}$ is the tangent $\infty$-category $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$, consisting of parameterized spectrum objects over $X$. This gives rise to a cohomology theory, called Quillen cohomology, whose category of coefficients is $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$. When $\mathcal{C}$ consists of algebras over a nice $\infty$-operad in a stable $\infty$-category, $\mathcal{T}_X\mathcal{C}$ is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of operadic modules, by work of Basterra--Mandell, Schwede and Lurie. In this paper we develop the model-categorical counterpart of this identification and extend it to the case of algebras over an enriched operad, taking values in a model category which is not necessarily stable. Let $L$ be a fixed branch -- that is, an irreducible germ of curve -- on a normal surface singularity $X$. If $A,B$ are two other branches, define $u_L(A,B) := \dfrac{(L \cdot A) \: (L \cdot B)}{A \cdot B}$, where $A \cdot B$ denotes the intersection number of $A$ and $B$. Call $X$ arborescent if all the dual graphs of its resolutions are trees. In a previous paper, the first three authors extended a 1985 theorem of P{\l}oski by proving that whenever $X$ is arborescent, the function $u_L$ is an ultrametric on the set of branches on $X$ different from $L$. In the present paper we prove that, conversely, if $u_L$ is an ultrametric, then $X$ is arborescent. We also show that for any normal surface singularity, one may find arbitrarily large sets of branches on $X$, characterized uniquely in terms of the topology of the resolutions of their sum, in restriction to which $u_L$ is still an ultrametric. Moreover, we describe the associated tree in terms of the dual graphs of such resolutions. Then we extend our setting by allowing $L$ to be an arbitrary semivaluation on $X$ and by defining $u_L$ on a suitable space of semivaluations. We prove that any such function is again an ultrametric if and only if $X$ is arborescent, and without any restriction on $X$ we exhibit special subspaces of the space of semivaluations in restriction to which $u_L$ is still an ultrametric., Comment: 50 pages, 14 figures. In this paper, we introduce a general family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials and investigate several $q$-series identities such as an extended generating function and a Srivastava-Agarwal type bilinear generating function for this family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials. We give a transformational identity involving generating functions for the generalized $q$-hypergeometric polynomials which we have introduced here. We also point out relevant connections of the various $q$-results, which we investigate here, with those in several related earlier works on this subject. We conclude this paper by remarking that it will be a rather trivial and inconsequential exercise to give the so-called $(p,q)$-variations of the $q$-results, which we have investigated here, because the additional parameter $p$ is obviously redundant., 14 pages

Recently, Lutz and Stull used methods from algorithmic information theory to prove two new Marstrand-type projection theorems, concerning subsets of Euclidean space which are not assumed to be Borel, or even analytic. One of the theorems states that if $K \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ is any set with equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions, then $$ \dim_{\mathrm{H}} π_{e}(K) = \min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\} $$ for almost every $e \in S^{n - 1}$. Here $π_{e}$ stands for orthogonal projection to $\mathrm{span}(e)$. The primary purpose of this paper is to present proofs for Lutz and Stull's projection theorems which do not refer to information theoretic concepts. Instead, they will rely on combinatorial-geometric arguments, such as discretised versions of Kaufman's "potential theoretic" method, the pigeonhole principle, and a lemma of Katz and Tao. A secondary purpose is to slightly generalise Lutz and Stull's theorems: the versions in this paper apply to orthogonal projections to $m$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, for all $0 < m < n$., 11 pages. v2: Incorporated referee suggestions

In 1970, Chou showed there are $|\mathbb{N}^*| = 2^{2^\mathbb{N}}$ topologically invariant means on $L_\infty(G)$ for any noncompact, $\sigma$-compact amenable group. Over the following 25 years, the sizes of the sets of topologically invariant means on $L_\infty(G)$ and $VN(G)$ were determined for any locally compact group. Each paper on a new case reached the same conclusion -- "the cardinality is as large as possible" -- but a unified proof never emerged. In this paper, I show $L_1(G)$ and $A(G)$ always contain orthogonal nets converging to invariance. An orthogonal net indexed by $\Gamma$ has $|\Gamma^*|$ accumulation points, where $|\Gamma^*|$ is determined by ultrafilter theory. In this paper, using the infinite system of similarity mappings {Sj : j ∈ ℕ} associated with the probability vector $$(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{{{2^2}}},...)$$ , for all n ∈ ℕ, we determine the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization errors for the infinite self-similar measure P. The technique obtained in this paper can be utilized to determine the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization errors for more general infinite self-similar measures.

In [BGLM] and [GLNP] it was conjectured that if $H$ is a simple Lie group of real rank at least 2, then the number of conjugacy classes of (arithmetic) lattices in $H$ of covolume at most $x$ is $x^{(\gamma(H)+o(1))\log x/\log\log x}$ where $\gamma(H)$ is an explicit constant computable from the (absolute) root system of $H$. In [BLu] we disproved this conjecture. Prime end boundaries $\partial_P\Omega$ of domains $\Omega$ are studied in the setting of complete doubling metric measure spaces supporting a $p$-Poincar\'e inequality. Notions of rectifiably (in)accessible- and (in)finitely far away prime ends are introduced and employed in classification of prime ends. We show that, for a given domain, the prime end capacity of the collection of all rectifiably inaccessible prime ends together will all non-singleton prime ends is zero. We show the resolutivity of continouous functions on $\partial_P\Omega$ which are Lipschitz continuous with respect to the Mazurkiewicz metric when restricted to the collection $\partial_{SP}\Omega$ of all accessible prime ends. Furthermore, bounded perturbations of such functions in $\partial_P\Omega\setminus\partial_{SP}\Omega$ yield the same Perron solution. In the final part of the paper, we demonstrate the (resolutive) Kellogg property with respect to the prime end boundary of bounded domains in the metric space. In this paper we introduce a natural model for the realization space of a polytope up to projective equivalence which we call the slack realization space of the polytope. The model arises from the positive part of an algebraic variety determined by the slack ideal of the polytope. This is a saturated determinantal ideal that encodes the combinatorics of the polytope. We also derive a new model of the realization space of a polytope from the positive part of the variety of a related ideal. In this paper we present a theorem that generalizes Sawyer's classic result about mixed weighted inequalities to the multilinear context. Let $\vec{w}=(w_1,...,w_m)$ and $\nu = w_1^\frac{1}{m}...w_m^\frac{1}{m}$, the main result of the paper sentences that under different conditions on the weights we can obtain $$\Bigg\| \frac{T(\vec f\,)(x)}{v}\Bigg\|_{L^{\frac{1}{m}, \infty}(\nu v^\frac{1}{m})} \leq C \ \prod_{i=1}^m{\|f_i\|_{L^1(w_i)}}, $$ where $T$ is a multilinear Calder\'on-Zygmund operator. Two permutations of $[n]=\{1,2 \ldots n\}$ are \textit{$k$-neighbor separated} if there are two elements that are neighbors in one of the permutations and that are separated by exactly $k-2$ other elements in the other permutation. Let the maximal number of pairwise $k$-neighbor separated permutations of $[n]$ be denoted by $P(n,k)$. In a previous paper, the authors have determined $P(n,3)$ for every $n$, answering a question of K\"orner, Messuti and Simonyi affirmatively. In this paper we prove that for every fixed positive integer $\ell $, $$P(n,2^\ell+1) = 2^{n-o(n)}. $$ We conjecture that for every fixed even $k$, $P(n,k)=2^{n-o(n)}$. We also show that this conjecture is asymptotically true in the following sense $$\lim_{k \rightarrow \infty} \lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \sqrt[n]{P(n,k)}=2.$$ Finally, we show that for even $n$, $P(n,n)= 3n/2$.

For any symplectic manifold $${(M,\omega )}$$ , the set of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ forms a group and $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ contains an important subset $${{\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ which consists of time one flows of autonomous(time-independent) Hamiltonian vector fields on M. One might expect that $${{\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ is a very small subset of $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ . In this paper, we estimate the size of the subset $${{\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ in $${C^{\infty }}$$ -topology and Hofer’s metric which was introduced by Hofer. Polterovich and Shelukhin proved that the complement $${{\text {Ham}}^c\backslash {\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ is a dense subset of $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ in $${C^{\infty }}$$ -topology and Hofer’s metric if $${(M,\omega )}$$ is a closed symplectically aspherical manifold where Conley conjecture is established (Polterovich and Schelukhin in Sel Math 22(1):227–296, 2016). In this paper, we generalize above theorem to general closed symplectic manifolds and general conv! ex symplectic manifolds. So, we prove that the set of all non-autonomous Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms $${{\text {Ham}}^c\backslash {\text {Aut}}(M,\omega )}$$ is a dense subset of $${{\text {Ham}}^c(M,\omega )}$$ in $${C^{\infty }}$$ -topology and Hofer’s metric if $${(M,\omega )}$$ is a closed or convex symplectic manifold without relying on the solution of Conley conjecture.

Variants of the coordinate descent approach for minimizing a nonlinear function are distinguished in part by the order in which coordinates are considered for relaxation. Three common orderings are cyclic (CCD), in which we cycle through the components of $x$ in order; randomized (RCD), in which the component to update is selected randomly and independently at each iteration; and random-permutations cyclic (RPCD), which differs from CCD only in that a random permutation is applied to the variables at the start of each cycle. Known convergence guarantees are weaker for CCD and RPCD than for RCD, though in most practical cases, computational performance is similar among all these variants. There is a certain type of quadratic function for which CCD is significantly slower than for RCD; a recent paper by Sun & Ye (2016, Worst-case complexity of cyclic coordinate descent: $O(n^2)$ gap with randomized version. The RPCD approach performs well on these functions, even better than RCD in a certain regime. This paper explains the good behavior of RPCD with a tight analysis.

We say that a complete nonsingular toric variety (called a toric manifold in this paper) is over $P$ if its quotient by the compact torus is homeomorphic to $P$ as a manifold with corners. Bott manifolds (or Bott towers) are toric manifolds over an $n$-cube $I^n$ and blowing them up at a fixed point produces toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ an $n$-cube with one vertex cut. They are all projective. On the other hand, Oda's $3$-fold, the simplest non-projective toric manifold, is over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$. In this paper, we classify toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ $(n\ge 3)$ as varieties and also as smooth manifolds. As a consequence, it turns out that (1) there are many non-projective toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ but they are all diffeomorphic, and (2) toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ in some class are determined by their cohomology rings as varieties among toric manifolds., Comment: 37 pages, 1 figure

In part I of this paper we studied additive decomposability of the set F y of the y -smooth numbers and the multiplicative decomposability of the shifted set G y = F y + { 1 } . In this paper, focusing on the case of ’large’ functions y , we continue the study of these problems. Further, we also investigate a problem related to the m-decomposability of k -term sumsets, for arbitrary k .

In this paper, we study the spectrality and frame-spectrality of exponential systems of the type $$E(\Lambda ,\varphi ) = \{e^{2\pi i \lambda \cdot \varphi (x)}: \lambda \in \Lambda \}$$ where the phase function $$\varphi $$ is a Borel measurable which is not necessarily linear. A complete characterization of pairs $$(\Lambda ,\varphi )$$ for which $$E(\Lambda ,\varphi )$$ is an orthogonal basis or a frame for $$L^{2}(\mu )$$ is obtained. In particular, we show that the middle-third Cantor measures and the unit disc, each admits an orthogonal basis with a certain non-linear phase. Under a natural regularity condition on the phase functions, when $$\mu $$ is the Lebesgue measure on [0, 1] and $$\Lambda = {{\mathbb {Z}}},$$ we show that only the standard phase functions $$\varphi (x) = \pm x$$ are the only possible functions that give rise to orthonormal bases. Surprisingly, however we prove that there exist a greater degree of flexibility, even for continuously differentiable phase functions in higher dimensions. For instance, we were able to describe a large class of functions $$\varphi $$ defined on $${{\mathbb {R}}}^{d}$$ such that the system $$E(\Lambda ,\varphi )$$ is an orthonormal basis for $$L^{2}[0,1]^{d}$$ when $$d\ge 2.$$ Moreover, we discuss how our results apply to the discretization problem of unitary representations of locally compact groups for the construction of orthonormal bases. Finally, we conclude the paper by stating several open problems.

In this paper, we study large $m$ asymptotics of the $l^1$ minimal $m$-partition problem for Dirichlet eigenvalue. For any smooth domain $\Omega\in \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $|\Omega|=1$, we prove that the limit $\lim\limits_{m\rightarrow\infty}l_m^1(\Omega)=c_0$ exists, and the constant $c_0$ is independent of the shape of $\Omega$. We use hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m/F_q$, which are particular sorts of rigid local systems, to construct explicit local systems whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite general linear groups $GL_n(q)$ for any $n \ge 2$ and and any prime power $q$, so long as $q > 3$ when $n=2$. This paper continues a program of finding simple (in the sense of simple to remember) families of exponential sums whose monodromy groups are certain finite groups of Lie type, cf. [Gr], [KT1], [KT2], [KT3] for (certain) finite symplectic and unitary groups, or certain sporadic groups, cf. [KRL], [KRLT1], [KRLT2], [KRLT3]. The novelty of this paper is obtaining $GL_n(q)$ in this hypergeometric way. A pullback construction then yields local systems on $A^1/F_q$ whose geometric monodromy groups are $SL_n(q)$. These turn out to recover a construction of Abhyankar., 26 pages

In 1900, at the international congress of mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. In 2015, Van Gorder considered the question of whether $\zeta(s)$ satisfies a non-algebraic differential equation and showed that it formally satisfies an infinite order linear differential equation. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan extended Van Gorder's result to show that the Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ is also formally satisfies a similar differential equation \begin{equation*}\label{HurDE} T\left[\zeta (s,a) - \frac{1}{a^s}\right] = \frac{1}{(s-1)a^{s-1}}. \end{equation*} But unfortunately in the same paper they proved that the operator $T$ applied to Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ does not converge at any point in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper, by defining $T_{p}^{a}$, a $p$-adic analogue of Van Gorder's operator $T,$ we establish an analogue of Prado and Klinger-Logan's differential equation satisfied by $\zeta_{p,E}(s,a)$ which is the $p$-adic analogue of the Hurwitz-type Euler zeta functions \begin{equation*}\label{HEZ} \zeta_E(s,a)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{(-1)^n}{(n+a)^s}. \end{equation*} In contrast with the complex case, due to the non-archimedean property, the operator $T_{p}^{a}$ applied to the $p$-adic Hurwitz-type Euler zeta function $\zeta_{p,E}(s,a)$ is convergent $p$-adically in the area of $s\in\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $s\neq 1$ and $a\in K$ with $|a|_{p}>1,$ where $K$ is any finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ with ramification index over $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ less than $p-1.$, Comment: 18 pages. In their seminal paper Erdös and Szemerédi formulated conjectures on the size of sumset and product set of integers. The strongest form of their conjecture is about sums and products along the edges of a graph. In this paper we show that this strong form of the Erdös-Szemerédi conjecture does not hold. We give upper and lower bounds on the cardinalities of sumsets, product sets, and ratio sets along the edges of graphs.

This paper considers an edge minimization problem in saturated bipartite graphs. An $n$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ but adding any missing edge to $G$ creates a copy of $H$. More than half a century ago, Wessel and Bollob\'as independently solved the problem of minimizing the number of edges in $K_{(s,t)}$-saturated graphs, where $K_{(s,t)}$ is the `ordered' complete bipartite graph with $s$ vertices from the first color class and $t$ from the second. However, the very natural `unordered' analogue of this problem was considered only half a decade ago by Moshkovitz and Shapira. When $s=t$, it can be easily checked that the unordered variant is exactly the same as the ordered case. Later, Gan, Kor\'andi, and Sudakov gave an asymptotically tight bound on the minimum number of edges in $K_{s,t}$-saturated $n$ by $n$ bipartite graphs, which is only smaller than the conjecture of Moshkovitz and Shapira by an additive constant. In this paper, we confirm their conjecture for $s=t-1$ with the classification of the extremal graphs. In this paper we introduce a general framework for the study of limits of relational structures in general and graphs in particular, which is based on a combination of model theory and (functional) analysis. We show how the various approaches to graph limits fit to this framework and that they naturally appear as "tractable cases" of a general theory. As an outcome of this, we provide extensions of known results. We believe that this put these into next context and perspective. For example, we prove that the sparse--dense dichotomy exactly corresponds to random free graphons. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of sparse structures. First, we consider limits of structures with bounded diameter connected components and we prove that in this case the convergence can be "almost" studied component-wise. We also propose the structure of limits objects for convergent sequences of sparse structures. Eventually, we consider the specific case of limits of colored rooted trees with bounded height and of graphs with bounded tree-depth, motivated by their role of elementary brick these graphs play in decompositions of sparse graphs, and give an explicit construction of a limit object in this case. This limit object is a graph built on a standard probability space with the property that every first-order definable set of tuples is measurable. This is an example of the general concept of {\em modeling} we introduce here. Our example is also the first "intermediate class" with explicitly defined limit structures., Comment: added journal reference

Amdeberhan's conjectures on the enumeration, the average size, and the largest size of $(n,n+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts have motivated many research on this topic. Recently, Straub and Nath-Sellers obtained formulas for the numbers of $(n, dn-1)$ and $(n, dn+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, respectively. Let $X_{s,t}$ be the size of a uniform random $(s,t)$-core partition with distinct parts when $s$ and $t$ are coprime to each other. Some explicit formulas for the $k$-th moments $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{2n+1,2n+3}^k]$ were given by Zaleski and Zeilberger when $k$ is small. Zaleski also studied the expectation and higher moments of $X_{n,dn-1}$ and conjectured some polynomiality properties concerning them in arXiv:1702.05634. Motivated by the above works, we derive several polynomiality results and asymptotic formulas for the $k$-th moments of $X_{n,dn+1}$ and $X_{n,dn-1}$ in this paper, by studying the beta sets of core partitions. In particular, we show that these $k$-th moments are asymptotically some polynomials of n with degrees at most $2k$, when $d$ is given and $n$ tends to infinity. Moreover, when $d=1$, we derive that the $k$-th moment $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,n+1}^k]$ of $X_{n,n+1}$ is asymptotically equal to $\left(n^2/10\right)^k$ when $n$ tends to infinity. The explicit formulas for the expectations $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn+1}]$ and $\mathbb{E} [X_{n,dn-1}]$ are also given.
