Terrestrial mud volcanoes represent surface features of channels for subsurface methane transport and, therefore, constitute an important source of methane emission from natural environments. How microbial processes regulate methane emissions in terrestrial mud volcanoes has yet to be fully addressed. This study demonstrated the geochemical characteristics and microbial communities of four mud volcano and seep sites in two geological settings of Sicily, Italy. At sites within the accretionary wedge that exhibited higher methane and sulfate concentrations, the communities were dominated by members capable of catalyzing methane and sulfate metabolisms and organic degradation. In particular, both anaerobic and aerobic methanotrophs were abundant and their abundance distribution coincided with the geochemical transition. In contrast, the sites near Mount Etna were characterized by high fluid salinity, CO2, and low methane and sulfate concentrations, with communities consisting of halophilic organic degraders and sulfur metabolizers, along with a minor presence of aerobic methanotrophs. Substantial variations in community composition and geochemistry across spatial and vertical redox gradients suggest that physicochemical contexts imposed by the geology, fluid path, and source characteristics play a vital role in shaping community composition and cycling of methane, sulfur and organic carbon in Sicily mud volcanoes.

Abstract Chemical weathering modulates carbon transfer between the crust, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The extent to which microbial processes are involved in mineral dissolution remains elusive. Here, we performed geochemical and molecular analyses of river water and other materials collected from a rapidly exhuming catchment in eastern Taiwan. In addition to solute generation driven primarily by pyrite-induced carbonate weathering, highly skewed microbial community compositions with abundant Sulfuricurvum and Thiobacillus members were detected during high-water periods. The yields of these taxa were also correlated with those of sulfate and sediments, suggesting that pyrite oxidation and carbonate dissolution were facilitated by sulfur-respiring microorganisms inhabiting erodible materials at a pace comparable to the supply of sulfur-bearing minerals through rapid exhumation. The net CO2 export regulated by such potentially supply-limited, microbially-mediated mineral weathering greatly surpasses the global average, highlighting active orogens in high-standing islands as important CO2 contributors rendered by tandem biotic and abiotic processes.

Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is a group of planktonic microorganisms that use methane as their primary source of cellular energy. For tropical lakes in monsoon Asia, there is currently a knowledge gap on MOB community diversity and the factors influencing their abundance. Herewith, we present a preliminary assessment of the MOB communities in three maar lakes in tropical monsoon Asia using Catalyzed Reporter Deposition, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH), 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and pmoA gene sequencing. Correlation analysis between MOB abundances and lakes’ physicochemical parameters following seasonal monsoon events were performed to explain observed spatial and temporal patterns in MOB diversity. The CARD-FISH analyses detected the three MOB types (I, II, and NC10) which aligned with the results from 16S rRNA amplicons and pmoA gene sequencing. Among community members based on 16S rRNA genes, Proteobacterial Type I MOB (e.g., Methylococcaceae and Methylomonadaceae), Proteobacterial Type II (Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobial (Methylacidiphilaceae), Methylomirabilota/NC10 (Methylomirabilaceae), and archaeal ANME-1a were found to be the dominant methane-oxidizers in three maar lakes. Analysis of microbial diversity and distribution revealed that the community compositions in Lake Yambo vary with the seasons and are more distinct during the stratified period. Temperature, DO, and pH were significantly and inversely linked with type I MOB and Methylomirabilota during stratification. Only MOB type I was influenced by monsoon changes. This research sought to establish a baseline for the diversity and ecology of planktonic MOB in tropical monsoon Asia to better comprehend their contribution to the CH4 cycle in tropical freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract Trace fossils are structures left in a substrate as the result of the activities of living organisms. The producer of the spindle-shaped trace fossil Rosselia incorporates fine-grained organic rich material into concentric layers surrounding the central shaft. Because Rosselia is common in stressed shallow marine environments where the preservation potential of organic material is generally poor, these trace fossils may act as natural archives, recording changes in the provenance of organic material. Carbon isotope values of organic carbon preserved in laminae of the studied Rosselia typically lie around − 26‰, suggesting a primary terrestrial source. However, increased levels of S and Ca detected from XRF scanning of the laminae indicate that at least some marine material is incorporated. Examination of a diagenetically altered specimen also demonstrates that both elemental composition and δ13C values can be substantially altered diagenesis. Nevertheless, the long stratigraphic range of Rosselia, from the Cambrian to the Present, and its ubiquitous occurrence in stressed shallow-marine settings make it a potentially powerful tool to reconstruct variations in the input of organic material in settings otherwise devoid of fine-grained organic matter.

Abstract Identification of methane origins remains a challenging work as current diagnostic signals are often not sufficient to resolve individual formation and post‐formation processes. To address such a knowledge gap in a tectonically active and fragmented terrain, samples from mud volcanoes, gas seeps, and springs distributed along structural features onshore and offshore of Taiwan were analyzed for their isotopic compositions of methane, nitrogen, helium, dissolved inorganic carbon, CO2, and water. Our analyses yielded Δ13CH3D and Δ12CH2D2 values ranging between +1.9‰ and +7.8‰ and between +3.0‰ and +19.9‰, respectively. A portion of the samples were characterized by values that represent the thermodynamic equilibrium at temperatures of 99°–260°C. These temperature estimates, together with the bulk isotopic compositions and local geothermal gradients (25°–30°C/km), suggest that methane was formed by thermal maturation of organic matter at depths of 2–9 km below the land surface and channeled upward along faults. Other samples were found to deviate from equilibrium by varying degrees. Considering the geological background, helium isotopic ratios, and nitrogen isotopologue compositions, and methanogens detected at some sites, these gases are either abiotic in origin or a mixture of microbial and thermogenic sources. Regardless of whether the equilibrium of methane isotopologues was reached, few sites hosted by sedimentary formations were characterized by mantle‐like helium signatures, indicating decoupled origins and potential degassing of helium from the relic igneous source. Overall, these results suggest the extraction of methane and other gases from multiple depths from strata fragmented by fault displacement in an active orogenic belt.

Abstract Many sediment attributes have been proposed as proxies for determining salinity conditions under which sediment is deposited, and six attributes (Sr/Ba-HAc, Sr/Ba-NH4Ac, δ13Corg, C/N, and the relative abundances and concentrations of dinoflagellate cysts) are compared here. In this paper, sediment attributes from the Fraser River Delta, Canada and surrounding coastal areas are compared by depositional position along the fluvial-to-marine transition, by salinity, and by sedimentological characteristics. Along the fluvial-to-marine transition, most attributes exhibit distinct trends between parts of the river that experience sustained marine water (saltwater) influence over seasonal and tidal timeframes, and parts that experience only freshwater or periodic saltwater influence. No attributes are reliable indicators of depositional position where saltwater incursion is short lived or where water is fresh. Where marine influence is sustained, Sr/Ba-HAc and Sr/Ba-NH4Ac are the most reliable positional indicators along the fluvial-to-marine transition. When compared strictly to salinity, Sr/Ba-HAc, Sr/Ba-NH4Ac, and δ13Corg all correlate predictably except in delta front and prodelta settings. Our data show that all six sediment attributes are heavily impacted by river-derived sedimentation, and it is not appropriate to compare values from strongly river-influenced settings (e.g., deltas) with those from weakly river-influenced settings (e.g., bays and estuaries).

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) play key roles in the carbon cycling of marine sediment. Both microbially or thermally activated cracking of organic matter often produces high quantities of DOC and VFAs. To uncover the distribution pattern of DOC and VFAs in sediments under both impacts, a submarine mud volcano (SMV), was chosen to denote a model system that could witness how microbial activities react under the mixing of seawater and deeply-sourced fluids in a subsurface environment. We examined the concentration profiles of DOC and several VFAs (lactate, formate, acetate, propionate, and butyrate) in pore water, covering both sulfate reduction and methanogenesis zones, and further numerically modeled six porewater species (DOC, bromide, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, and total alkalinity) to quantify their fluxes from depth as well as the rates of in-situ microbial processes. Apparently, bulk DOC concentrations fluctuated with depths, probably primarily controlled by in situ microbial processes. Lactate was detectable in some samples, while propionate and butyrate were under detection limit. Acetate and formate concentrations were consistently and uniformly low throughout all biogeochemical zones, with a slightly increasing trend with depth at the center of the SMV, suggesting active utilization and turnover by the terminal steps of organic matter mineralization. The numerical modeling suggests that most DOC patterns were primarily influenced by in-situ organic matter degradation, while the impact of upward migrating fluid become more significant at center sites. The calculation of the Gibbs energy of metabolic redox reactions reveals that acetoclastic sulfate reduction yields the highest energy throughout sediment columns and may co-exist with methanogenesis below sulfate reduction zone. In contrast, acetoclastic methanogenesis yields higher energy within sulfate reduction zone than below that region, suggesting it is thermodynamically feasible to co-occur with sulfate reduction in dynamic SMV environments.

Temperament has drawn considerable attention in the understanding of behavioural problems and psychopathology across developmental stages. However, less of a focus has been placed on the role of temperament in physical aspects of health. We aimed to examine the relations between early temperament traits and physical health in school-age children. This study used longitudinal data of 18,994 children (52.4% boys) born in 2005 from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, in which follow-up surveys were conducted via face-to-face interviews with the child's caregiver. Temperament at 5.5 years of age was assessed using a nine-item measure, and two higher-order temperament traits, surgency and regulation, were derived through confirmatory factor analysis. Physical health outcomes at age 8 included caregiver-rated general health status and medically attended injuries. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied, with the child's birth outcome, early health status or injury history, health behaviours and family socioeconomic status as control variables. The results indicated that higher levels of surgency and regulation, as early temperament traits, significantly predicted lower odds of caregiver-rated poor health in later years. Higher level of regulation was also associated with lower odds of injury risk. Our findings suggest that assessing early temperament traits could be useful for the promotion and management of physical health in young school-age children.

Abstract We report radiocarbon and stable carbon isotope measurements from vent gas (CO2(g)), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and particulate organic carbon (POC), from two vents of the Kueishantao (KST) shallow‐water hydrothermal system, offshore northeast Taiwan. The purpose of this research is to investigate how magmatic‐sourced carbon enters various carbon pools in the hydrothermal system. We utilize a precipitation method to eliminate sulfur compounds from CO2 samples to facilitate Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) analysis, and evaluate radiocarbon background levels during processing to characterize hydrothermal‐sourced CO2 that contains negligible radiocarbon. The result shows that both CO2(g) and DIC in the fluids below two vent orifices fall within a narrow range of fraction of modern carbon (F14C) from 0.013 to 0.136 and δ13C from −8.3‰ to −5.1‰. The F14C values correspond to approximately 90% magmatic‐sourced carbon in CO2(g) and DIC. A combination of equilibrium and kinetic isotopic fractionation can adequately explain relatively high CO2(g) δ13C to DIC, beneath vent orifices. Above the vent orifices, DIC becomes enriched in both 14C and 13C as a result of physical mixing with ambient seawater. POC F14C values confirm a significant magmatic carbon contribution into the POC pool within the KST system, with rapid hydrothermal circulation. Our results identify the physiochemical processes responsible for magmatic carbon migration from CO2(g) into the DIC pool, and demonstrate how a dual carbon isotope approach can serve as an effective tool in understanding carbon flow in high temperature‐low pH hydrothermal systems.

The fluvial landscape of the Hengchun Peninsula in southernmost Taiwan is generally characterized by a narrow river and a wide valley plain. Such underfit stream features are unusual in tectonically active areas such as Taiwan. In this research, we hypothesize that the relative sea level change since the end of the last glacial period might be the main factor driving the formation of this type of landscape on the relatively recently emerged Taiwan Island. The Gangkou River is among the largest and most pristine rivers on the Hengchun Peninsula, and well-preserved river terraces and bedrock exposures occur along the river and river mouth. Therefore, the Gangkou River was thoroughly surveyed to investigate the factors shaping the landscape and to determine the landscape evolutionary history. Our research indicates that the average uplift rate of the Gangkou River is 1.5 - 1.7 mm yr-1. Because of the low uplift rate, the rising sea level after the last glaciation caused widespread aggradation in the Gangkou River. At approximately 8.0 - 7.7 ka, maximum flooding occurred, and the sea level subsequently remained stable, while the aggradation stopped after 7.1 ka. Incision followed, forming the high terraces, and starting in the Little Ice Age, repeated aggradation and incision occurred, forming the low terraces. These processes produced the current landscape of the Gangkou River. Overall, the uplift rates calculated from this research are relatively low in this tectonically active area.

Scrutinizing the traits of octocorals that could affect their physiological performance becomes increasingly important as several of these species are observed to become dominant on reefs pressured by the Anthropocene. In the present study, we compare the organismal traits of two branching octocorals Litophyton sp. and Stereonephthya sp. commonly populating in sympatry the high-latitude coral communities of northern Taiwan. Using 13 traits, we describe and compare performance traits in these two symbiotic species that we discuss in light of the association they maintain with their algal partners. Litophyton sp. and Stereonephthya sp. hosted Durusdinium and Gerakladium, respectively. Both genera represent singular associations, with the latter further establishing the first solid report of Gerakladium in octocorals. Traits distinguished two groups explained by the two partnerships considered. Litophyton sp. associated with Durusdinium had significantly higher organic matter, chlorophyll (chl) a, total lipid and lower chl c/chl a ratio than Stereonephthya sp. associated with Gerakladium. The δ15N in the host and algae, as well as δ13C in the host were also higher in Litophyton species. Although no significant difference was observed in the δ13C of the algae, Litophyton sp. presented a significantly higher variance for this trait and for chl a content than Stereonephthya species. Altogether, the traits examined suggested contrasting performances among the two octocorals. Both octocoral species clearly deviate from an autotrophic diet. Litophyton sp. appears to complement its heterotrophic diet with photosynthetically acquired energy, while Stereonephthya sp. tends to be more specialized and benefits relatively little from its symbiotic relationship. Our study calls for greater consideration of the individual variation in octocoral physiology and in the definition of their ecological strategies.

In the northern South China Sea (SCS) we explored methane dynamics in the water column during SONNE-cruise SO266 in October/November 2018. Two depth zones contained elevated methane concentrations: the upper 400 m ( 10°C and > 20°C, respectively. Both 16S rRNA gene and pmoA amplicon analyses revealed distinct microbial and methanotrophic communities in water with temperature of 27°C, ∼10°C, and 3°C. Second, we found elevated methane concentrations in 200–400 m in the FWCR-region whereas increased methane concentrations occurred in the uppermost 100 m above SSFR. The deeper plume above FWCR might be due to an intrusion of the Kuroshio water mass into SCS keeping the methane from being aerobically oxidized in the warm surface water and vented to the atmosphere. Finally, all peak methane concentrations occurred in water depth, with rather low backscatter, i.e., in water depth with less suspended matter. At the seafloor, ocean currents and long-term seepage appeared to control methane dynamics. We derived methane fluxes of 0.08–0.12 mmol m–2 d–1 from a 4.5 km2 area at FWCR and of 3.0–79.9 mmol m–2 d–1 from a 0.01 km2 area at SSFR. Repetitive sampling of the area at SSFR indicated that changing directions of ocean currents possibly affected methane concentrations and thus flux. In contrast to these seepage sites with distinct methane plumes, retrieval of drilling equipment produced no methane plume. Even gas emission triggered by seafloor drilling did not supply measureable methane concentrations after 3 h, but caused an increase in methanotrophic activity as determined by rate measurements and molecular-biological analyses. Apparently, only long-term seepage can generate methane anomalies in the ocean.

With large topographic gradients, rifted basins serve as efficient traps for particulate matter from adjacent lands and the ocean surface. However, the fate of organic carbon in the sediment, mostly unaltered by the hydrothermal activities known to occur in young rifts, remains poorly understood. In this study, we present an examination of diagenetic activities and carbon remineralization based on the first complete suite of pore-water data of sediment marginally affected by hydrothermal activities in the Southern Okinawa Trough (SOT). The sediment showed an oxygen penetration depth of 1 cm, consumption of NO3- in the top 1 cm, smeared profiles of Mn2+ and Fe2+ with the latter reaching up to 450 μmol L-1, and relatively unchanged SO42- concentrations with depth. Net production rates of dissolved species resolved from pore-water profiles provide an estimate of 1.68 ± 0.21 mmol C m-2 d-1 as the total carbon remineralization rate in the upper 30 cm sediment column, with aerobic carbon oxidation being the major pathway. The rate, one order of magnitude lower than that of the adjacent East China Sea, is attributed to the lower bottom-water temperature and carbon flux in the trough. The high carbon burial efficiency of SOT (68% of carbon reaching the seafloor and processed thereunder) reflects the combined effects of small mountain rivers and rifting-induced particle trapping.

Sepioteuthis lessoniana is a widely distributed neritic squid in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. It is an important species in fisheries, but species management is difficult because of inadequate information regarding its life history. The daily growth and δ18O values from the core to the edge of statoliths of S. lessoniana collected in northern Taiwan were analyzed to predict the experienced temperature history along with ontogenetic stages. The probability of occurrence in a given area at each life stage in three seasonal groups was determined using salinity values, deduced and measured temperatures, and the known ecology of S. lessoniana. The results showed that ontogenetic variation in the statolith δ18O values in S. lessoniana reflected the seasonal temperature fluctuation observed in Taiwanese waters, which indicated the reliability of the prediction method. Complex and diverse distribution and movement patterns were observed in the three seasonal groups. The results also indicated the importance of the waters near the coast of northeastern Taiwan as a spawning ground. Based on a model prediction, the distribution of S. lessoniana is likely associated with water temperature and current. A potential migration route from the Penghu Islands to northeastern Taiwan suggests a high level of population connectivity in S. lessoniana in Taiwan. This study provides information on the spatial and vertical distribution of S. lessoniana at various ontogenetic stages, which is essential for resource management and conservation of this commercial species.

English as a lingua franca (ELF) for international communication has become a heated issue for discussions among educators of English in recent years. As scholars find it essential for teachers to encourage their students to acquire the ability of using English in real-life conversations, they also wonder about the necessity of requiring students to speak in an accent approximate to that of native speakers of English. With the purpose of encouraging non-English majors at technological universities to speak English and directing English majors’ attention to things other than the so-called ‘standard norms of English accent,’ this study involved 85 freshmen from two technological universities at southern Taiwan. The researchers ask the following questions: What are the students’ attitudes toward native speaker norms of English? After a semester of teaching interventions, do the students’ attitudes change? Do the students’ majors affect their attitudes? Do the students’ genders affect their attitudes? The teaching interventions included providing students with teaching materials covering varieties of spoken English and assisting students to prepare three three-minute group conversation video clips. The results gained from both quantitative and qualitative methods indicate that the students appreciated the accent of the native speakers most. However, after the interventions, the students could appreciate other accents as well. Moreover, the students did not find it so important to speak like a native speaker, and their self-evaluation of English speaking ability and confidence in speaking English with others were significantly boosted after the implementation of the project.

Shallow-water hydrothermal vent ecosystems are distinct from the deep-sea counterparts, because they are in receipt of sustenance from both chemosynthetic and photosynthetic production and have a lack of symbiosis. The trophic linkage and energy flow in these ecosystems, however remain elusive, which allows us poor understanding of the whole spectrum of biological components distributed across such environmental gradients. In this study, a thorough isotopic survey was conducted on various biological specimens and suspended particulates collected along four transects across the venting features of a shallow-water hydrothermal field off Kueishan Island, Taiwan. The isotope data combined with a Bayesian-based mixing model indicate that the vent-associated particulate organic matter (vent POM), as primary contribution of chemoautotrophic populations, has a high δ13C value (-18.2 ± 1.1‰) and a low δ15N value (-1.7 ± 0.4‰). Zooplankton and epibenthic crustaceans, as the fundamental consumers, exhibit δ13C and δ15N values ranging from -21.3 to -19.8‰ and +5.1 to +7.5‰, respectively, and can utilize the vent POM for 38-53% of their diets. The vent-obligate crab Xenograpsus testudinatus shows a large variation in δ13C (from -18.8 to -13.9‰) and δ15N values (from 1.1 to 9.8‰), although an omnivorous trophic level (2.5) is identified for it using δ15N values of amino acids, and it can utilize the vent POM for 6-87% of its diet. The consistently low (< 10.0‰) and overlapping δ15N values for most of the analyzed macroinvertebrates suggest extensive ingestion of chemosynthetic production complementing the photosynthetic production, a weak prey-predator relationship and low trophic complexity possibly imposed by the extreme environmental contexts of shallow-water hydrothermal ecosystems.

Terrestrial mud volcanoes (MVs) are an important natural source of methane emission. The role of microbial processes in methane cycling and organic transformation in such environments remains largely unexplored. In this study, we aim to uncover functional potentials and community assemblages across geochemical transitions in a ferruginous, sulfate-depleted MV of eastern Taiwan. Geochemical profiles combined with 16S rRNA gene abundances indicated that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) mediated by ANME-2a group coincided with iron/manganese reduction by Desulfuromonadales at shallow depths deprived of sulfate. The activity of AOM was stimulated either by methane alone or by methane and a range of electron acceptors, such as sulfate, ferrihydrite, and artificial humic acid. Metagenomic analyses revealed that functional genes for AOM and metal reduction were more abundant at shallow intervals. In particular, genes encoding pili expression and electron transport through multi-heme cytochromes were prevalent, suggesting potential intercellular interactions for electron transport involved in AOM. For comparison, genes responsible for methanogenesis and degradation of chitin and plant-derived molecules were more abundant at depth. The gene distribution combined with the enhanced proportions of 16S rRNA genes related to methanogens and heterotrophs, and geochemical characteristics suggest that particulate organic matter was degraded into various organic entities that could further fuel in situ methanogenesis. Finally, genes responsible for aerobic methane oxidation were more abundant in the bubbling pool and near-surface sediments. These methane oxidizers account for the ultimate attenuation of methane discharge into the atmosphere. Overall, our results demonstrated that various community members were compartmentalized into stratified niches along geochemical gradients. These community members form a metabolic network that cascades the carbon transformation from the upstream degradation of recalcitrant organic carbon with fermentative production of labile organic entities and methane to downstream methane oxidation and metal reduction near the surface. Such a metabolic architecture enables effective methane removal under ferruginous, sulfate-depleted conditions in terrestrial MVs.

Geothermal environments are characterized by dynamic redox and temperature fluctuations inherited from the exposure of deeply-sourced, hot, reducing fluids to low-temperature, oxidizing ambient environments. To investigate whether microbial assemblages shifted in response to the changes of a redox state within acidic hot ponds, we collected three paired water and sediment samples from the Tatun Volcano Group, assessed metabolic roles of community members, and correlated their functional capabilities with geochemical factors along depth. Molecular analyses revealed that Sulfolobus spp., Acidianus spp. and Vulcanisaeta spp. capable of respiring elemental sulfur under oxic and/or low-oxygen conditions were the major archaeal members in planktonic communities. In contrast, obligate anaerobic Caldisphaera spp. dominated over others in bottom-dwelling communities. Bacteria were only detected in one locality wherein the majority was affiliated with microaerophilic Hydrogenobaculum spp. Cluster analyses indicated that archaeal communities associated with sediments tended to cluster together and branch off those with water. In addition, the quantities of dissolved oxygen within the water column were substantially less than those in equilibrium with atmospheric oxygen, indicating a net oxygen consumption most likely catalyzed by microbial processes. These lines of evidence suggest that the segregation of planktonic from bottom-dwelling archaeal assemblages could be accounted for by the oxygen affinities inherited in individual archaeal members. Community assemblages in geothermal ecosystems would be often underrepresented without cautious sampling of both water and sediments.

The Taiwan Chelungpu Drilling Project (TCDP) has provided an unprecedented opportunity to reveal a terrestrial subsurface microbial ecosystem that has possibly experienced continuous disturbance by the arccontinental collision since 5 Ma. The drilling penetrated Pliocene-Pleistocene sedimentary rocks to a depth of 2000 meters below the land surface (mbls) and encountered two major fault zones. Sixteen samples retrieved from the drilled cores at depths between 464 to 1451 mbls were examined to characterize microbial community structures through cultivation-based approaches. Cultivation experiments were performed with various media at temperatures ranging from 30 to 50¢XC. The results indicate that fermenters and heterotrophic sulfate reducers, using complex organic carbon, were ubiquitously present in most samples. Acetate-utilizing and H2 ¡Vutilizing sulfate reducers were restricted to shallower intervals along the depth profile. Iron reducers and methanogens were only cultivated in a few shallow samples. Twelve pure strains including 8 fermenters, 3 iron reducers and 1 sulfate reducer originally enriched at 30 or 40¢XC were isolated and identified with 16S rDNA sequence analyses. They were phylogenetically affiliated with Firmicutes, Bacteriodes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria in various degrees of similarity. The presence of metabolism was not correlated with lithology, depth, temperature and the appearance of fracture throughout the core. The ubiquitous appearance of fermentation and organotrophic sulfate reduction suggests that organic carbon sources were readily accessible in this deep terrestrial subsurface environment. These results infer that the foreland sedimentary strata disturbed by tectonic activities over a geological time scale might support a heterotrophy-dominated deep terrestrial subsurface microbial ecosystem.

Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is a group of planktonic microorganisms that use methane as their primary source of cellular energy. For tropical lakes in monsoon Asia, there is currently a knowledge gap on MOB community diversity and the factors influencing their abundance. Herewith, we present a preliminary assessment of the MOB communities in three maar lakes in tropical monsoon Asia using Catalyzed Reporter Deposition, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH), 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and pmoA gene sequencing. Correlation analysis between MOB abundances and lakes' physicochemical parameters following seasonal monsoon events were performed to explain observed spatial and temporal patterns in MOB diversity. The CARD-FISH analyses detected the three MOB types (I, II, and NC10) which aligned with the results from 16S rRNA amplicons and pmoA gene sequencing. Among community members based on 16S rRNA genes, Proteobacterial Type I MOB (e.g., Methylococcaceae and Methylomonadaceae), Proteobacterial Type II (Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobial (Methylacidiphilaceae), Methylomirabilota/NC10 (Methylomirabilaceae), and archaeal ANME-1a were found to be the dominant methane-oxidizers in three maar lakes. Analysis of microbial diversity and distribution revealed that the community compositions in Lake Yambo vary with the seasons and are more distinct during the stratified period. Temperature, DO, and pH were significantly and inversely linked with type I MOB and Methylomirabilota during stratification. Only MOB type I was influenced by monsoon changes. This research sought to establish a baseline for the diversity and ecology of planktonic MOB in tropical monsoon Asia to better comprehend their contribution to the CH4 cycle in tropical freshwater ecosystems. The Gaoping Submarine Canyon (GPSC) off Southwest Taiwan has been extensively studied due to its unique geology, the role of transferring terrestrial material to the deep sea, and diverse biological communities. However, there is a lack of understanding of carbon cycling across the sediment--water interface in the canyon. This study aims to fill the gap by utilizing the field data collected between 2014 and 2020 and the Linear Inverse Model (LIM) to reconstruct the benthic food web (i.e., carbon flows through different stocks) in the head of GPSC and the upper Gaoping slope (GS). The biotic and abiotic organic carbon (OC) stocks were significantly higher on the slope than in the canyon, except for the bacteria stock. The sediment oxygen utilization was similar between the two habitats, but the magnitude and distribution of the OC flow in the food web were distinctively different. Despite a significant input flux of ~1400 mg C m-2 d-1 in the canyon, 85% of the carbon flux exited the system, while 14% was buried. On the slope, 75% of the OC input (~105 mg C m-2 d-1) was buried, and only 11% exited the system. Bacteria processes play a major role in the carbon fluxes within the canyon. In contrast, the food web in the upper slope exhibited stronger interactions among metazoans, indicated by higher fluxes between meiofauna and macrofauna compartments. Network indices based on the LIM outputs showed that the canyon head had higher total system throughput (T..) and total system through flow (TST), indicating greater energy flowing through the system. In contrast, the slope had a significantly higher Finn cycling Index (FCI), average mutual information (AMI), and longer OC turnover time, suggesting a relatively more stable ecosystem with higher energy recycling. Due to sampling limitations, the present study only represents the benthic food web during the "dry" season. By integrating the field data into a food web model, this study provides valuable insight into the fates of OC cycling in an active submarine canyon, focusing on the often overlooked benthic communities. Mixotrophic organisms can derive nutrition from both auto-and heterotrophy, which allows them to use a variety of trophic pathways to sustain their metabolic demands under variable conditions. Therefore, when facing environmental change, these organisms are expected to demonstrate an intrinsic ability to acclimatize through trophic plasticity. 2. Scleractinian corals are ecologically important mixotrophs, but understanding their trophic plasticity has been impaired by an oversimplification towards inconsistent proxies of coral diet and overlooking intraspecific variability. 3. Here, we applied a Bayesian analysis of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope data to determine the trophic niches of six common species of scleractinian corals and their associated endosymbionts, and combined it with an unsupervised machine learning algorithm to identify trophic behaviours and strategies. 4. We found a variable amount of nutritional plasticity identified by different trophic behaviours within and between mixotrophic corals living under the same environmental conditions. Furthermore, we observed changes in trophic plasticity across environmental conditions. Corals from variable environments had larger host and endosymbiont niches than corals from stable environments. In addition, deeper corals had niches indicating a greater degree of heterotrophy than shallow corals. Collectively, corals exhibited distinct trophic strategies by promoting trophic niche differentiation along the mixotrophic continuum and conspecific individual colonies displayed high trophic variation. 5. Our results provide a foundation to understand how mixotrophic organisms may adjust their nutrition in response to ongoing global environmental change and the consequential modification of benthic assemblages.
