The giant magnetostrictive transducer is a transducer device that realizes magneto-mechanical energy conversion. Each mechanical component is connected by the joint surface to realize the transmission of ultrasonic vibration energy. To ensure the efficient transmission of energy, the influence of the contact characteristics of the joint surface on the output stability of the transducer is studied. According to the contact conditions between the mechanical joint surfaces of the giant magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer (GMUT), the key factors affecting the mechanical vibration performance of the ultrasonic system are obtained by analyzing the vibration transmission characteristics of the joint surfaces. The influence of different joint surface contact characteristics (JSCT) on the amplitude–frequency curve of the transducer is analyzed by the ANSYS software. Simulations and experiments have been conducted to verify the predicted results. As the preload force increases, the natural frequency of the transducer increases, but the growth rate decreases. The natural frequency of the double-rod GMUT with a small joint surface area is slightly higher in the optimal output mode shape, while its amplitude is significantly larger. The optimal prestress for the GMUT with different-sized joint surfaces is 3–5 MPa. This paper acquires the JSCT under a high-frequency vibration condition, reveals the influence of the joint surface on the mechanical output performance of the GMUT, and can provide a theoretical basis for the design and analysis of the rotary ultrasonic vibration processing system. Magnetostrictive alloys hold great promise for Energy Harvesting applications due to their inherent durability. However, their implementation often results in usable voltage ranges that fall significantly below common electronic standards like 1.6, 3.3, and 5 volts. Consequently, the utilization of electronic circuits becomes essential to amplify the voltage and enhance energy conversion efficiency. Over the past few decades, numerous conversion techniques have been devised for other intelligent materials, such as piezoelectrics, some of which have even made their way into commercial products. Surprisingly, there is a dearth of specialized techniques, if not a complete absence, tailored to magnetostrictive devices. Among potential solutions, a suitable AC–DC Boost converter stands out as a highly promising candidate for addressing this challenge, but this solution has never been fully characterized. Then, this paper presents thorough experimental validations of such a converter, driven by a real-time Arduino board equipped to measure source time periods and operate under various conditions. Chromium (Cr)-doped cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized using a sol–gel autocombustion method, with the chemical formula CoCrxFe2xO4. The value of x ranged from 0.00 to 0.5 in 0.1 increments. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the development of highly crystalline cubic spinel structures for all samples, with an average crystallite size of approximately 40 to 45 nm determined using the Scherrer equation. Pellets were prepared using a traditional ceramic method. The magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of the samples were tested using strain gauge and VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer) techniques. The results of the magnetic and magnetostrictive tests showed that the chromium-substituted cobalt ferrites exhibited higher strain derivative magnitudes than pure cobalt ferrite. These findings indicated that the introduction of chromium into the cobalt ferrite structure led to changes in the material's magnetic properties. These changes were attributed to anisotropic contributions, resulting from an increased presence of Co2+ ions at B-sites due to the chromium substitutions. In summary, this study concluded that introducing chromium into the cobalt ferrite structure caused alterations in the material's magnetic properties, which were explained by changes in the cationic arrangement within the crystal lattice. Magnetostrictive transducer, as a kind of high-efficiency transducer, has a broad application in the field of energy harvesting and sensor. However, the voltage generating performance of the transducer limits its application. This paper will endeavor to quantify the load-induced voltage of magnetostrictive transducer by developing a holistic theoretical model and deriving the corresponding analytical solution. On this basis, this paper proposed the concept of voltage sensitivity in transducer optimization, which could quantitatively analyze the normalized voltage generated by a unit excitation. Based on the theoretical simulation and experimental validation, the voltage sensitivities of magnetostrictive transducer under different mechanical loads are investigated. The parametric analysis will be conducted to further optimize the transducer structure to enhance its open-circuit and load voltage. This paper presents a study of magnetoelectric (ME) properties of the PZT/Terfenol-D composite with a varying number of layers. The composite consists of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases that are mechanically coupled. The purpose of this setup is to gain control over the electric polarization of a material via an external magnetic field. Unlike most similar composites, our samples utilize a commercial piezoelectric patch instead of pure PZT. At present, researchers face two main problems regarding magnetoelectric materials: (i) the effect is observed far below room temperature for single-phase materials, and (ii) the ME coupling is too weak to be commercially viable. Our research was carried out via the lock-in technique on two PZT/Terfenol-D samples we synthesized. Relatively strong room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases was observed for both samples. Two types of characteristics were investigated: (i) ME voltage versus magnetic AC field frequency, and (ii) ME voltage versus magnetic DC field. We detected multiple, grouped signal peaks ascribed to different resonance modes. For realizing ultrasonic elliptical vibration-assisted cutting, a single excitation elliptical vibration system was proposed in this work, which was composed of a giant magnetostrictive transducer and an asymmetrical stepped ultrasonic horn with arc transition (ASUH). The dynamic simulation of the vibration system was carried out using ANSYS, the output end of the vibration system produced longitudinal and transverse vibrations simultaneously due to the ASUH at the resonant frequency, and the influence of the transition arc of the ASUH on the elliptical vibration performance of the vibration system was studied. The impedance, elliptical vibration trajectory of the output end, and output amplitude of the vibration system were tested experimentally. The results show that the actual resonant frequency of the vibration system was 20.708 kHz, the mechanical quality factor was 106, and the longitudinal amplitude was slightly greater than the transverse amplitude of the output end. This paper proposes a multilevel three-dimensional constitutive model based on a microscopically phenomenological approach from the domain rotation mechanism, which is a fully coupled self-consistent homogenization scheme considering the interactions between elastic–inelastic strain and hysteresis. Considering the interactions among magnetic domains, grains, polycrystalline complexes, and macroscopic phenomenology, we predict the nonlinear magnetostrictive response of Terfenol-D under different types of external force loads and magnetic excitations in various thermal environments involving multi-fields of coupled magnetic, elastic, thermal, and mechanical phenomena. The average values of the mechanical bulk strains for different magnetization states are obtained at the grain scale utilizing Boltzmann functions and a self-consistent homogenization scheme. A Taylor series expansion of the Gibbs function concerning the field variables and an adapted Jiles–Atherton model are used to construct the hysteresis coupled constitutive relations at the macroscopic scale. The results associated with the experiments show that the established model can reasonably predict the magnetostrictive response under different external mixed stimuli. It can provide theoretical guidance for the precise control of nonlinear vibrations and the optimal design of the rotating giant magnetostrictive transducers at both microscopic and macroscopic multiple scales. Giant magnetostrictive transducer can be widely used in active vibration control, micro-positioning mechanism, energy harvesting system, and ultrasonic machining. Hysteresis and coupling effects are present in transducer behavior. The accurate prediction of output characteristics is critical for a transducer. A dynamic characteristic model of a transducer is proposed, by providing a modeling methodology capable of characterizing the nonlinearities. To attain this objective, the output displacement, acceleration, and force are discussed, the effects of operating conditions on the performance of Terfenol-D are studied, and a magneto-mechanical model for the behavior of transducer is proposed. A prototype of the transducer is fabricated and tested to verify the proposed model. The output displacement, acceleration, and force have been theoretically and experimentally studied at different working conditions. The results show that, the displacement amplitude, acceleration amplitude, and force amplitude are about 49 μm, 1943 m/s2, and 20 N. The article addressed the heat exchange efficiency of an antifreeze flow, used as the working substance in a refrigeration system and filled with a magnetostrictive intermetallic alloy. A dynamic two-dimensional gradient magnetic field was employed as a propulsion source for the magnetostrictive coolant. The regulation and control of the volume flow rate of the coolant were achieved by inducing the dynamic magnetic field, which influenced the orientation and size of the scale-shaped particles dispersed within the coolant. Replacing conventional pumps with magnetic field-based propulsion systems for the circulation of antifreeze in heat-exchange systems offers a reduction in energy consumption in technological systems. Preparing Fe–Ga sheets with excellent magnetostrictive coefficients by rolling and annealing methods can greatly promote the development of high-efficiency magnetostrictive devices. 0.3 mm thick Fe–Ga thin sheet was produced by the one-stage large-reduction cold rolling method without intermediate annealing. Trace V and Nb elements addition improves the rolling formability of the Fe–Ga sheet by precipitating a large number of (Nb,V)C particles. The evolution of precipitation, microstructure, texture, and magnetostrictive coefficients in the Fe–Ga sheet was investigated. The microstructure of primary recrystallization is composed of homogenous distribution of fine grains with an average grain size of about 22 μm. The composite inhibitors composed of MnS and (Nb,V)C precipitates with a particle size of 40∼80 nm suppress the matrix grains effectively. The primary recrystallization texture consists of a strong γ texture with a peak at {111}<112> and a relatively strong {114}<481> texture. The secondary recrystallization of Goss grain occurs at the annealing temperature of 900 °C and is completed at 1100 °C by the combined effects of the existing inhibitor and texture. The Fe–Ga thin sheets composed of several millimeter-sized grains of Goss texture accompanied by small grains oriented by {114}<481> were obtained after annealing at 1100 °C, and its measured magnetostriction value is about 238 ppm. Magnetostrictive alloys are very promising for Vibration Energy Harvesting applications to supply power to Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, especially because of their intrinsic robustness. Typically, vibration energy sources are random in nature, usually providing exploitable voltages much lower than the electronic standards 1.6, 3.3 and 5 V. Therefore, a Power Electronic Interface (PEI) is needed to improve the conversion to DC output voltage from AC input over a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes. Very few or no conversion techniques are available for magnetostrictive devices, although several have been presented over the years for other smart materials, such as piezoelectrics. For example, hybrid buck–boost converters for piezoelectrics use one or more external inductors with a high-frequency switching technique. However, because of the intrinsic nature of harvesters based on magnetostrictive materials, such energy conversion techniques are proved to be neither efficient nor applicable. An improved AC–DC boost converter seems very promising for our purpose instead. The key feature is represented by the direct exploitation of the active harvester coil as a storage element of the boost circuit, without using other passive inductors as in other switching methods. Experimental tests of such a converter, driven with a real-time operating Arduino controller to detect the polarity of the input voltage, are presented with the aim to assess the potentiality of the scheme with both sinusoidal and impulse-like inputs. The applications of sensors in the aerospace industry are mostly concentrated in the middle and high frequencies, and low-frequency sensors often face the problems of low power and short working bandwidth. A lightweight, thin, high-power, low-frequency broadband transducer based on giant magnetostrictive material is designed. The design and optimization processes of the core components are introduced and analyzed emphatically. The finite element simulation results are validated by the PSV-100 laser vibration meter. Three basic configurations of the work panel are proposed, and the optimal configuration is determined by modal, acoustic, and vibration coupling analyses. Compared with the original configuration, it is found that the lowest resonant frequency of the optimal configuration is reduced by 24.6% and the highest resonant frequency within 2000 Hz is 1744.9 Hz, which is 54.2% higher than that of the original configuration. This greatly improves the vibration power and operating frequency range of the transducer. Then, the honeycomb structure is innovatively applied to the work panel, and it is verified that the honeycomb structure has a great effect on the vibration performance of the work panel. By optimizing the size of the honeycomb structure, it is determined that the honeycomb structure can improve the vibration power of the work panel to its maximum value when the distance between the half-opposite sides of the hexagon is H = 3.5 mm. It can reduce the resonant frequency of the work panel; the lowest resonant frequency is reduced by 12.8%. The giant magnetostrictive transducer (GMT) can be widely used in ultra-precision machining in precision-fluid-control fields. The temperature stability of GMT is critical for the reliable generation of output characteristics. This study presents a magnetic-energy-losses method for the GMT working at high frequency, and designs a temperature-stable control system to improve energy transmission and heat dissipation. Based on the loss-separation theory and experimental data, the temperature-rise characteristics of the transducer are analyzed. The temperature rise considers the effects of hysteresis loss, the eddy-current loss, the anomalous loss and the Joule heat. A constitutive relation among losses, frequency and magnetic-flux density is given. The temperature distribution of the transducer can be quickly and accurately calculated, using the constitutive equation. According to the convective heat-transfer and the thermal-compensation method, a temperature-control system is designed. A prototype of the system is then fabricated and tested to verify the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed design methods. The vibration characteristics of a giant magnetostrictive transducer play a significant role in the stability and processing effect of spinning ultrasonic machining. The output characterization of the giant magnetostrictive transducer is unstable subject to an powerful external load, which severely restricts the application of giant magnetostrictive transducer in industry. In this study, the effect of change of load force and electrical parameter in the different directions on the high-frequency (about 20 kHz) vibration output characteristics of the giant magnetostrictive transducer is investigated, through finite element analysis and static loading experimental. The result shows that the electrical parameter of a giant magnetostrictive transducer has a similar changing trend with the increasing of the axis and radial force load; The resonant frequency also increases with the increase of electrical parameter and load force; The amplitude attenuation of ultrasonic vibration will become extraordinary intense even almost to stop beat when the axis force load increase to 750 N and radial force load increase to 550 N; The gradient of resonant frequency in a radial direction is more significant than that in an axial direction. Based on the results of theoretical analysis and static loading experimental, the measures to reduce amplitude attenuation and improve output stability of amplitude under resonant frequency are proposed. Vibration energy harvesting is a new alternative to lithium battery power for low-power devices, attempting to recover wasted or lost vibration energy to generate electricity. Magnetostrictive-based energy harvesting exploits the coupling properties of the Villari and Faraday electromagnetic induction effects to achieve mechanical–magnetic–electric energy conversion. In order to better apply to the actual vibration environment, such as buses, and improve the ability to capture low-frequency vibration energy, a double-stage rhombus vibration energy harvesting device, based on Terfenol-D rods, was developed. By establishing an analytical model of the force amplification ratio of the harvesting device, the design is optimized using the Single-Objective Genetic Algorithm, and the safety and pre-magnetization layout methods are analyzed by Finite Element Analysis. The output characteristics of the prototype, including the output voltage frequency response under low-frequency regular excitation and random excitation, the effect of external resistance, and the vibration energy capture performance under random excitation, are investigated in detail through experiments. The results of the experiments showed that the peak output power of the fabricated prototype was 1.056 mW at 30 Hz operating frequency, the energy harvesting capability reached 41.4 μW/N, and the peak open circuit voltage and output power were 2.92 V and 266 mW, respectively, under random excitation. Practical application test results showed that the peak voltage generated was 1.06–1.51 V when the excitation level was 2.2–4.9 m/s2. The comparative study indicates that the output performance of the proposed double-stage rhombus magnetostrictive vibration energy harvesting system is a great improvement over the proposals of existing literature. At present, the research of electronically controlled injectors is mostly limited to the non-direct drive structure. Although the research on the direct drive structure is involved, it mostly stays in the conceptual machine or simulation stage. In this paper, based on the direct-drive structure, the giant magnetostrictive material is used as the energy conversion material, the prototype of the direct-drive giant magnetostrictive fuel injector is designed and manufactured, and the experimental test system and AMESim simulation model are built. By means of experiment and simulation, the injection characteristics of Giant magnetostrictive injector (GMI) are tested. It is found that the minimum single injection quantity of GMI is 5.9 mm3 under the condition of 30 MPa rail pressure, which shows high injection accuracy. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results under different driving pulse widths and voltages. When the driving pulse width is not less than 650 µs, the relative errors are all less than 5%, which verifies the effectiveness of the simulation model. The injection performance of GMI is analyzed. The results show that this injector has a stable injection performance, fast response speed (the shortest injection pulse width is about 200 µs), and the injection process can be completed five times in 5 ms. A novel alternating current (AC) magnetic field sensor that has a stable operating point and is insensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations is presented. The sensor is based on a high attenuation fiber Bragg grating (HAFBG) attached to a magnetostrictive rod. A stable operating point is achieved by regulating a heating laser based on a feedback algorithm that compensates the temperature fluctuations of the surrounding environment. Experimental results show that the sensor responds well to dynamic magnetic fields and is able to ensure a stable operating point in the range of at least 15 °C in an ambient temperature disturbance test. The ease of fabrication and excellent performance suggest that the proposed fiber sensor is suitable for practical AC magnetic field sensing applications, such as health monitoring of transformers and fault diagnosis of induction motors. This article presents a design method of Longitudinal-Bending Coupled Horn (L-BCH) of a giant magnetostrictive transducer utilized in spinning ultrasonic machining. The structural parameters are initially determined by the design theory of the horn and thick disc. Then, the effect of the structural parameters of the rotating wheel on the vibration characteristics of the L-BCH are explored by the model and harmonic response analysis through the finite element method. Through continuous modification of the geometrical parameters of the rotary wheel, the L-BCH meeting the requirements of a giant magnetostrictive transducer is designed. Finally, the frequency and amplitude measurements are performed on the prototype by the impedance analyzer and the laser vibrometer. The finite element analysis and experimental results show that: the large diameter, small diameter, thickness, and fillet radius of the rotating wheel have different impacts on the dynamic characteristics of the L-BCH. Among them, the thickness of the rotary wheel has the most significant influence on the natural frequency and amplitude. In addition, the rotating wheel has a pitch circle when the longitudinal-bending coupled vibration occurs, and the structure itself also has the characteristic of amplifying amplitude. Studies have substantiated that the vibration and noise produced by the iron core of an electromagnetic device are closely related to the magnetostriction of the iron core silicon steel sheet. Moreover, when the induction motor works under the condition of frequency conversion, the symmetry of the core silicon steel sheet will change, and the distribution of the vibration and noise field of the motor will be asymmetric, which will aggravate the vibration and noise. This paper completes the experimental measurement and analysis of the electromagnetic characteristics and magnetostrictive characteristics of silicon steel sheets. The magnetic field of a 1140 V/75 kW variable-frequency motor is calculated analytically based on the analytical method, and the stator/rotor magnetic induction intensity and permeance are calculated separately to obtain the air gap magnetic density and the radial electromagnetic force. The vibration and noise of the 1140 V/75 kW variable-frequency motor are analyzed by the finite element method, while the magnetization curve and magnetostrictive characteristic curve of a silicon steel sheet under different conditions are considered. An experimental platform is built to measure and analyze the vibration displacement and acceleration of the variable frequency motor, which verifies the correctness of the proposed scheme. A dual-output magnetoelectric (ME) energy harvester consisting of strictly concentric toroidal Ni0.8Zn0.2Tb0.02Fe1.98O4/(Pb0.70Ba0.26Sr0.04)(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PbaS-4)/Ni0.8Zn0.2Tb0.02Fe1.98O4 composite with solenoid wound around it is presented and developed. In this case, spatial electromagnetic energy from power lines can be scavenged by ME element and the solenoid simultaneously, and then, the output power density was improved due to electromagnetic induction involved. Experimental results show that the maximum induced voltage can reach 15 mV (port I) and 1.2 mV (port II) for open-circuit conditions under the amplitude of 70 mA current driving of 50 Hz. Correspondingly, generated output power for ports I and II reaches 0.4285 and 30.1476 nW at optimum load resistances of 250 and $140~\Omega $ , respectively. A comprehensive model is a basis for adequately understanding the energy conversion mechanism of magnetostrictive materials and guides the design of magnetostrictive devices. This paper established a fully coupled model that fully considered the piezomagnetic effect and the electromagnetic effect in its procedure of energy conversion. The proposed model can accurately predict the output voltage with different excitation levels and illustrate the interaction between physical fields. Based on the established model, we quantify the voltage contributed by the piezomagnetic effect and the electromagnetic effect. After a thorough analysis, we discovered that even though the voltage generation is always dominated by the piezomagnetic effect of the magnetostrictive material, the proportion from the electromagnetic effect will increase moderately with larger excitation levels. Magnetostrictive behavior is characterized by a complex coupling between magnetic and mechanical quantities. While this behavior can be quite easily exploited for both actuation and sensing or energy conversion purposes, the complex hysteresis interaction between magnetization and magnetic field and mechanical stress and strain is hard to model. Nevertheless, magnetic and magnetostrictive experimental curves are quite self-similar, assuming stress as self-similarity parameter. The quantification of this concept would help modeling. The acoustically driven spin-wave resonance in a phononic-crystal cavity is numerically investigated. The designed cavity enables confinement of gigahertz vibrations in a wavelength-scale point-defect structure and sustains a variety of resonance modes. Inhomogeneous strain distributions in the modes modify the magnetostrictive coupling and the spin-wave excitation susceptible to an external-field orientation. In particular, a monopole-like mode in the cavity having a near-symmetrical pattern shows a subwavelength-scale mode volume and can provide a versatile acoustic excitation scheme independent of the field-angle variation. Thus, the phononic-crystal platform offers an alternative approach to acoustically control the spin-wave dynamics with ultrasmall and inhomogeneous mode structures, which will be a key technology to integrate and operate large-scale magnomechanical circuits. A force-driven kinetic energy harvester, designed to be excited with impulse-like mechanical loads, is presented. Energy harvesting is a promising technique to feed wireless sensor networks. The proposed device exploits three rods of Galfenol and has been modeled through FEM COMSOL Multiphysics with nonlinear fully coupled characteristics. They consider the general behaviors of magnetostrictive materials and are compatible with thermodynamics. The preliminary results of the time-domain simulations, with an impulse-like force applied, have been compared with experimental results showing a good agreement. Moreover, the proposed nonlinear modeling has shown better performances with respect to software built-in magnetostrictive models. Delta-E effect sensors are based on magnetoelectric resonators that detune in a magnetic field due to the delta-E effect of the magnetostrictive material. In recent years, such sensors have shown the potential to detect small amplitude and low-frequency magnetic fields. Yet, they all require external magnetic bias fields for optimal operation, which is highly detrimental to their application. Here, we solve this problem by combining the delta-E effect with exchange biased multilayers and operate the resonator in a low-loss torsion mode. It is comprehensively analyzed experimentally and theoretically using various kinds of models. Due to the exchange bias, no external magnetic bias fields are required, but still low detection limits down to 350 pT / Hz at 25 Hz are achieved. The potential of this concept is demonstrated with a new operating scheme that permits simultaneous measurement and localization, which is especially desirable for typical biomedical inverse solution problems. The sensor is localized with a minimum spatial resolution of 1 cm while measuring a low-frequency magnetic test signal that can be well reconstructed. Overall, we demonstrate that this class of magnetic field sensors is a significant step towards first biomedical applications and compact large number sensor arrays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a giant magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer was designed with Terfenol-D as the active material. The influence of different Terfenol-D rod structures on the performance of the giantmagnetostrictive transducerwas investigated. Finite element analysis was used to analyze the dynamics of the theoretical giant magnetostrictive transducer and to validate the design. Eddy current losses were simulated for Terfenol-D rods of various structures using finite element analysis in ANSYS Maxwell. Two different Terfenol-D rods were then fabricated with either slices along the axial direction or slit along the radial direction, then the impedance and amplitude of the magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer composed of the two Terfenol-D rods were measured. The results suggest that sliced Terfenol-D rods can suppress eddy currents more effectively, resulting in higher energy conversion efficiency; therefore, the Terfenol-D rods of small giant magnetostrictive transducers should be sliced along the axial direction to suppress eddy currents, whereas radial slits should be adopted for the rods of large giant magnetostrictive transducers to ensure integrity of the Terfenol-D rod and avoid adverse effects on the vibration performance of the giant magnetostrictive transducer that are caused by cutting the rods. The effect of variable compressive stress on hysteresis, eddy-current, and anomalous losses in magnetostrictive materials is investigated by the built magnetic characteristic testing system. Based on experimental results of Terfenol-D and loss separation theory, the trends of loss coefficients of three variables, magnetic frequency f, peak flux magnetic density Bm, and compressive stress σ, are analyzed. The reasons for the change in losses are explained from the point of view of micro-magnetism and physical mechanism. A variable coefficient magnetic energy loss calculating model considering compressive stress is derived using the algorithm of Levenberg–Marquardt and the method of multivariate parametric regression. The experimental and computed results of magnetic energy losses are compared and analyzed under different operating conditions. The analysis results show that the proposed model could well predict the losses under compressive stress at high-frequencies (5–20 kHz). The average error of the computed and experimental results is 5.5%. Because the performance of giant magnetostrictive materials (GMMs) can vary at different temperatures, the positioning accuracy of a giant magnetostrictive actuator is affected by heat. In this work, a new simplified control strategy under compulsory water cooling is proposed to maintain a constant GMM temperature. Based on this strategy, a coupled turbulent flow field and temperature field finite element model is created for a GMM smart component. The model is simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics software version 5.3. Through simulations, the temperature field distribution of GMM smart components is analysed under different drive input currents and cooling water flow rates. Based on the obtained simulation results, a GMM intelligent component temperature control device is constructed. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results; a thermostatic control effect is achieved in the thermostat of the giant magnetostrictive rod. Here, in order to calibrate the magnetostrictive liquid-level meter in situ, a set of in-situ calibration device for magnetostrictive liquid-level meter is designed. The structure and working principle of the device are described, and the experimental test and error analysis are carried out for the parts of the in-situ calibration device. Finally, according to the modern instrument and error theory, the accuracy of the calibration device is assessed, and the field calibration experiment of magnetostrictive liquid level gauge is carried out. The theoretical analysis and field experiment results show that the calibrated device can meet the in-situ calibration requirements of the magnetostrictive liquid-level meter with a range of 0–6 m and a precision of 1 mm.

High-speed electric machines operate at tens of thousands of revolutions per minute. The rotor and stator cores experience high-frequency electromagnetic fields. While the magnetic characteristics are available at 50/60 Hz, magnetic characteristics are required over a wide range of frequency due to variable speed operation of high speed motor. In this article, tests are carried out on ferromagnetic alloys over a frequency range of 1 Hz to 5 kHz and flux densities ranging from 0.1 to 2 T. The materials considered include the widely used M36 and 65C600 laminations. In applications where the rotor speed and shaft temperature are high, solid core rotors are more viable than laminated ones. Furthermore, the application requires that the shaft and active magnetic parts of the rotor be made of a single material. Hence, EN353 and EN8 are the prospective rotor materials considered. An extensive experimental study on the magnetic characteristics of these materials over a wide frequency range is reported in this article. The flux density variation over the core length at different frequencies is analyzed using finite element analysis. The results include B-H curves, static magnetisation curves, and power loss curves. The loss curves are useful to evaluate the loss density in the magnetic material at different frequencies and for various values of peak flux densities. This paper presents a quasi-3D electromagnetic analysis of the multi-pole magnetization BLDC motor. The permanent magnet (PM) of a multi-pole magnetization BLDC motor has several poles in a magnet. The polar separation section of the multi-pole PM is implemented through the magnetization pattern function. The analysis model of this study, as the outer rotor type, has two 3D structures: the PM overhang and housing-integrated rotor core. Because the 3D analysis is time consuming, 3D structures are corrected to 2D analysis model. The PM overhang is corrected by considering the magnitude of magnetic energy, and the housing-integrated rotor core is corrected by considering the radial direction flux of the rotor core. The frequent accident due to external short circuit of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles have prompted people to develop sensing technology to achieve early warning. However, the limited space and high temperature in highly integrated lithium-ion battery packs present significant challenges for current sensors to achieve external short circuit monitoring with high structural flexibility and heat resistance. In this study, a piezoelectric elastomer is designed and blended with magnetostrictive ferric tetroxide to prepare the LMPE/Fe 3 O 4 magnetoelectric current sensor (LMPE/Fe 3 O 4 MCS). The amorphous structure and low modulus of the piezoelectric elastomer enable the LMPE/Fe 3 O 4 MCS to exhibit large deformability over 50 % elongation, and the non-ferroelectric LMPE and ferric tetroxide with high Curie temperature offer the LMPE/Fe 3 O 4 MCS with high heat resistance over 150 °C. Meanwhile, the excellent interfacial interaction between the piezoelectric elastomer and the ferric tetroxide eliminates stress transfer loss between the interface, presenting outstanding magnetoelectric response and excellent linearity (>0.99) with current sensitivity of 5.975 mV A−1. The LMPE/Fe 3 O 4 MCS can achieve real-time monitoring and early warning for external vibration and short circuit during the charging and discharging process of lithium batteries, which shows promising solutions for the safety improvement of electric vehicles. • LMPE and Fe 3 O 4 were combined to prepare magnetoelectric current sensor MCS. • The MCS is obtained with self-powered, heat resistant, cost-effective, etc. • The MCS can achieve real-time monitoring and early warning for ESC. • The MCS has potential for electric vehicle battery safety applications. A partitioned stator-flux reversal (FR) permanent magnet machine (PS-FRPMM) is a new combination of a stator PM machine and a magnetically geared machine and has the specifications of both machines in terms of robust structure and torque density. In this paper, a comprehensive 2-D analytical model is developed for PS-FRPMM based on subdomain technique. The presented model has the capability to accurately and quickly investigate the effects of design parameters on the machine performance. The 2-D analytical model is evaluated on two case studies with 12 stator teeth and 10 rotor poles, and 18 stator teeth and 13 rotor poles, with four different magnetization patterns. The influences of various design parameters such as the rotor slot width, slot opening width, and the segment ratio of the PMs in the two-segment magnetization pattern have been investigated on the quantities, such as the instantaneous torque, torque ripple, unbalanced magnetic force (UMF), and electromotive force (EMF). For evaluating the presented analytical model, the 2-D finite element method (FEM) with and without saturation effects has been used. The comparative study between the analytical and numerical models shows good agreement. Finally, a 3-D FEM has been used, and the results of the 2-D analytical model and 3-D FEM are compared in terms of the accuracy and computational time. The results show that the presented model has lower computational time compared to the 2-D and 3-D FEM, while its accuracy is acceptable under different circumstances, such as saturation. The magnetostrictive inkjet printhead (MagJet), an example of the 1-D magnetostrictive actuator (MA), consists of one MA, a nozzle, a chamber, and a fluid inlet. The mathematical estimation tells that the droplets are not likely to be made due to the inverse of Ohnesorge number less than one. The experimental results, however, show that the MagJet ejects the high viscosity fluid up to 1000 cP at room temperature. The magnetostrictive motor (MagMotor), an example of the 2-D MA, is composed of one Terfenol-D rod, one toroidal coil, one solenoid coil, a stator, a rotor, and housing. In this paper, a vibrational drilling tool using a magnetostrictive torsional transducer is designed and fabricated. The torsional transducer is a hollow cylinder, which is made up of "2 V permendur." Passing an alternating current through the material creates a variable circular magnetic field and exciting a coaxial coil with a direct current generates a constant axial field in the material. According to the Wiedemann effect, the magnetic domains of the material rotate helically in the direction of the external field and cause a shear strain in the material. To utilize the maximum torque and amplitude of the transducer as well as to maintain the transducer's resonance conditions, a wave transmitter is designed to connect the transducer to a drill bit. The dimensions of the vibrating tool are calculated theoretically and verified by the finite element software of COMSOL. Friction couplings are designed to connect the transducer, wave transmitter, and the drill bit. This torsional drilling tool is used for drilling of aluminum workpieces. The tests show that torsional vibrations reduce the required drilling torque by 60% in comparison to conventional drilling. In addition, usage of the torsional vibrations has the effect of the chip breaking, improving the accuracy of the hole size by 55.4%, and reducing the drilling surface roughness by the percent of 25.3% in comparison to conventional drilling. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study on high-frequency (>5000 Hz) output characteristics of the giant magnetostrictive transducer (GMT) at varied operating conditions. Based on the Jiles–Atherton model, Maxwell’s equations, Newton’s law, and Fourier’s heat transfer equation, a nonlinear electromagnetic–mechanical–thermal multi-field coupled finite element model for GMT is established. The output displacement amplitude of the magnetostrictive rod and the acceleration of vibrating horn at the GMT device are measured and analyzed at varied exciting amplitude of ac magnetic field and frequencies (from 5600 to 7000 Hz). The frequency dependences of permeability and magnetoelastic coupling coefficient obtained from the experimental results are used in revising the model parameters. These output characteristics analysis results can provide theoretical and experimental guidance in the optimization of structural design and precise controlling for high-frequency GMT system. The stator vibrations of a bearingless synchronous reluctance motor are investigated with simulations. The influence of the Maxwell stress tensor and magnetostriction on the stator vibrations is studied at different operational conditions. An energy-based magnetomechanical model of iron core is implemented and the influence of the magnetostriction in the iron core on the stator vibrations is further investigated and compared with the case where the magnetostriction is not modeled. The objective of the research is to find out how the stator vibrations can be used to detect the off-center rotor position. Tb–Dy–Fe–Co thin films grown on Si 100 substrates at different substrate temperatures viz., room temperature, 300, 400 and 500 °C were investigated for structural, microstructural, magnetic and magnetostrictive properties. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction studies showed presence of amorphous structure for the as-deposited film. Structural studies further indicated formation of (Tb,Dy)2(Fe,Co)17 and Fe–Co phases for the films grown at higher substrate temperatures. Magnetization measurements displayed presence of strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy for all the films. In addition to this, formation of out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy co-existing with in-plane magnetic anisotropy was noticed for the films grown at higher substrate temperatures. Accordingly, magnetic force microscopy studies indicated a strong out-of-plane magnetic contrast for the films grown at higher substrate temperatures. The magnetostriction estimated from tip deflection measurement was found to be negligibly small for the film grown at intermediate temperature viz., 300 °C. However, with subsequent increase in substrate temperatures the magnetostriction was found to increase. The presence of strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy co-existing with in-plane components was found to be detrimental for the development of magnetostriction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When the longitudinal mode guided waves based on magnetostrictive effect were employed to inspect the bridge cables, we found that there was a large difference in the signal's amplitude of the same specification cable under different tensile force. This difference would affect the test results and the identification of defects. It is necessary to study the effect of tensile force on the signal for the reliability of detection. Firstly, the effective field theory is employed to take the force as an additional bias magnetic field. Then, the effect of the tensile force on generating and receiving longitudinal mode guided waves based on magnetostrictive effect is obtained by the relationship between the bias magnetic field and the magnetostrictive coupling coefficient. Finally, the experiment of the magnetostrictive sensor is carried out on a Φ5 mm steel wire under different force. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. The results show that the existence of the tensile force would change the operation point for generating and receiving the longitudinal mode guided waves based on magnetostrictive effect, which associated with the coupling coefficient. In order to obtain the optimal conversion efficiency for the force state wire and cable, the applied bias magnetic field should be set smaller than the bias magnetic field for the force-free state. This paper deals with practical issues and solutions related to the use of the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) for electrical current measurement. It presents an overview of a full attempt of design and realization of an almost industrial GMI-based current sensor or clamp. The sensor combines dc and ac measurements with the same flexible sensitive element. This paper addresses several practical problems encountered in a real measurement environment. In this context, main attention was paid to the impact of the influence quantities that largely condition the implementation strategies and solutions of the sensor. For the intended industrial application, these influence quantities first include the operating temperature. Its impact on the intrinsic sensor response was investigated in an almost industrial temperature range. Second, bending stress on the sensitive element is another involved influence parameter in the toroidal and flexible structure of the sensor. The effect of this was also characterized. Finally, the third considered influence parameter is the effect of magnetic disturbances. These include the eccentricity of the conductor of interest and the impact of the surrounding magnetic fields such as the earth’s field or fields produced by other conductors in close proximity to the sensor. Different strategies of implementation and solutions, taking into account the impact of influence parameters, were proposed and compared. This paper describes the development of a new magnetometer calibration device using an active magnetic field compensation technique based on the base quantity of time rather than secondary standard field measurements. The proposed arrangement can be used as a laboratory calibration device that monitors and compensates the ambient dc magnetic field in a magnetically quiet environment. Furthermore, it can be developed to serve as a laboratory primary standard since it is based on the measurement of a base quantity, such as time. The proposed technique is based on the fluxgate magnetization principle and the measurement of the time difference between the two successive output pulses. The laboratory arrangement consists of a long solenoid for 1-D applications, which may be extended to 2-D and 3-D using Helmholtz coils, and a microcontroller for fast signal processing operations, which evaluate and compensate the detected ambient magnetic field using a closed-loop control algorithm. The optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) sensing system and signal processing method, which is based on the short-time Fourier transform, enable us to interrogate reflected wavelengths of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and their relative position along the optical fiber with high spatial resolution. An FBG is an optical fiber with an appropriately inscribed periodic refractive index modulation. When a broadband optical signal is launched into the FBG, narrow wavelength bandwidth is reflected. Due to an attached transducer, such as Terfenol-D, the reflected wavelength changes with the applied magnetic field. The proposed magnetic FBG sensor consists of a small rod of magnetostrictive alloy TbDyFe, also known as Terfenol-D, which has large magnetostriction. The FBG is attached to the Terfenol-D rod with UV glue. Consequently, the external magnetic field is applied to the sensor and as a result, the Terfenol-D rod length increases. The reflected wavelength shift is observed and measured by the OFDR sensing system. Therefore, we determine the external magnetic field along the optical fiber from the reflected Bragg wavelength shift. The measurement results show that the proposed magnetic field sensors based on Terfenol-D using OFDR can be successfully used for measurement of the external magnetic field along an optical fiber. Magnetostrictive actuators show interesting performances related to high-precision actuation with high-energy density, which focused the interest of research in the past years. Nevertheless, the output deformation is related to the current and the applied stress, through a complex multi-input multi-output (MIMO) hysteresis process. As a consequence, a reliable and accurate control task cannot neglect the stress monitoring. Such task, if performed by an ad hoc stress sensor, e.g., a load cell, will face with the sensor’s placement in the device, resulting in an increase in cost, complexity, and bulkiness of the system. This issue can be circumvent if the current and magnetic flux measurements, available in the control chain, are exploited. To this aim, a novel self-sensing approach to deliver real-time estimation of the stress is presented in this paper, involving some recent results of a thermodynamic compatible MIMO model of hysteresis for magnetostrictive materials. The dual-resonant enhancement of mechanical and optical response in cavity optomechanical magnetometers enables precision sensing of magnetic fields. In previous working prototypes of such magnetometers, a cavity optomechanical system is functionalized by manually epoxy-bonding a grain of magnetostrictive material. While this approach allows proof-of-principle demonstrations, practical applications require more scalable and reproducible fabrication pathways. In this work, we developed a multiple-step method to scalably fabricate optomechanical magnetometers on a silicon chip, with reproducible performance across different devices. The key step is to develop a process to sputter coat a magnetostrictive film onto high quality toroidal microresonators, without degradation of the optical quality factor. A peak sensitivity of 585 pT/ H z is achieved, which is comparable with previously reported results using epoxy-bonding. Furthermore, we demonstrate that thermally annealing the sputtered film can improve the magnetometer sensitivity by a factor of 6.3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the established equivalent circuit model of a magnetostrictive vibration generator, the low ac voltage and low power produced by the generator under low acceleration are calculated. Comparisons between the calculated and measured results show that the model can provide reasonable data trends of the generator under different loads. To boost the low ac voltage to a high dc voltage required by electronic devices in low power consumption, two energy extraction circuits (EECs) (i.e., a proportion integration-based EEC and an improved EEC) are studied. The corresponding two harvesting systems, which include the generator and the proposed EECs, are designed and simulated in LTspice for system-level evaluation. It is found that the two harvesting systems can effectively boost a few hundred millivolts of ac voltage to the steady dc voltage under low acceleration and varying load conditions. Moreover, the system with the improved EEC can be powered by the harvested energy to maintain self-sustaining operation, and the batteries in the system can be charged for future start-up operations; thus, the system has strong practicability in the dc supply for the electronic devices. Experimental and calculating analysis of magnetic losses for Terfenol-D is a necessary step for the design of high-power magnetostrictive transducer. In order to further research the magnetic energy losses characteristics, a Terfenol-D rod is sectioned along different directions, and these slices are made into several square annular sheet samples. The influences of material magnetization direction on the losses are compared and analyzed. The values of magnetic energy losses are measured to investigate their variations at different frequencies and magnetic densities of driving magnetic field. Furthermore, the traditional losses formula is improved. The values of the hysteresis losses, eddy-current losses, and anomalous losses are separated out, and the losses coefficients are achieved through polynomial curve fitting.
