This research used a customized laboratory setup to compare the filtration performance and fouling buildup during microfiltration with polymeric membranes of skim milk using 2 diafiltration media: ultrafiltration permeate and ultrapure water. Two filtration modes were evaluated: in stage 1, the diafiltration media was added in a 1:1 ratio, with the collection of permeate continuing until the initial protein concentration was restored. In stage 2, retentates and permeates were recycled to simulate fouling accumulation in a steady-state without altering the retentate composition. Utilizing water as the diafiltration medium resulted in higher flux and lower resistance values compared with using ultrafiltration permeate, irrespective of the filtration mode. The concentration had a significant effect on membrane resistance, with no noticeable time-dependent effect on fouling layer development after 60 min of filtration when the retentate composition remained constant. This research explores the enhancement of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes through the incorporation of chitosan derived from the lignicolous fungus Ganoderma sp. Utilizing wet phase inversion and solution casting techniques, chitosan was successfully integrated into the PES matrix, as confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), which indicated a high deacetylation degree of 75.7%. The incorporation of chitosan significantly increased the membrane hydrophilicity, as evidenced by a reduction in the water contact angle and a substantial improvement in pure water permeability, from 17.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 to 27.3 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The membrane anti-fouling properties were also notably enhanced, with the Flux Recovery Ratio (FRR) increasing from approximately 60–80%. Moreover, the chitosan-modified PES/CS membrane, particularly at a 5% chitosan concentration, demonstrated exceptional efficacy in pollutant removal, achieving over 90% elimination of total suspended solids, cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), alongside a 79% reduction in color during the treatment of textile wastewater. Biocatalytic membranes have great potential in various industrial sectors, with the immobilization of enzymes being a crucial stage. Immobilizing enzymes through covalent bonds is a complex and time-consuming process for large-scale applications. Polydopamine (PDA) offers a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative for enzyme immobilization. Therefore, surface modification with polydopamine as mussel-inspired antifouling coatings has increased resistance to fouling. In this study, α-amylase enzyme was covalently bound to a bioactive PDA-coated polyethersulfone (PES) membrane surface using cyanuric chloride as a linker. The optimal activity of α-amylase enzyme immobilized on PES/PDA membrane was obtained at temperature and pH of 55°C and 6.5, respectively. The immobilized enzyme can be reused up to five reaction cycles with 55 % retention of initial activity. Besides, it maintained 60 % of its activity after being stored for five weeks at 4°C. Additionally, the immobilized enzyme demonstrated increased Michaelis constant and maximum velocity values during starch hydrolysis. The results of the biofouling experiment of various membranes in a dead-end cell demonstrated that the PES membrane's water flux increased from 6722.7 Lmh to 7560.2 Lmh after PDA modification. Although α-amylase immobilization reduced the flux to 7458.5 Lmh due to enhanced hydrophilicity, compared to unmodified membrane. The findings of this study demonstrated that the membrane produced through co-deposition exhibited superior hydrophilicity, enhanced coating stability, and strong antifouling properties, positioning it as a promising candidate for industrial applications. Submarines and other underwater vessels are widely employed in the naval sector for defense purposes as well as in the civilian realm for scientifi c and recreational purposes. However, challenges such as biofouling caused by bacteria and algae can signifi cantly impact performance and environmental eff ects. This study investigated the impact of biofouling on the U209 submarine by analysing how the location of roughness aff ects drag, with particular emphasis on frictional drag. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was employed to assess the impact of biofouling on the turbulent fl ow characteristics of ship hull surfaces with varying roughness, operating within the range of velocity = 9.7 knot – 29.1 knot. The submarine analysis was conducted under complete submersion without any water disturbance. The increase in drag resulted from the variation in the surface of the submarine hull. The drag increased from 8.5% to 18.2% for partial hull roughness and from 30.5% to 46.9% for overall roughness. The entire surface irregularity of the hull led to a signifi cant increase in the drag. This can be explained by the results that as the surface area aff ected by biofouling increases, the amount of turbulent fl ow around the hull also increases, resulting in greater resistance, particularly in terms of frictional drag. The increasing environmental concerns of conventional antifouling coatings have led to the exploration of novel and sustainable solutions to address the biofouling caused by Limnoperna fortunei. As a rapidly expanding invasive species, the fouling process of Limnoperna fortunei is closely associated with microbial fouling, posing significant threats to the integrity of aquatic infrastructure and biodiversity. This review discusses recent progress in the development of non-toxic, eco-friendly antifouling coatings that are designed to effectively resist biofouling without using toxic chemicals. Recent research has focused on developing novel non-toxic coatings that integrate natural bioactive components with advanced material technologies. These formulations not only meet current environmental standards and exhibit minimal ecological impact, but also possess significant potential in preventing the attachment, growth, and reproduction of Limnoperna fortunei. This review aims to provide scientific guidance by proposing effective and sustainable solutions to address the ecological challenges presented by Limnoperna fortunei. The insights gained from current research not only reveal novel antifouling methods, but also identify key areas for further investigation aimed at enhancing performance and environmental compatibility. This study investigated the potential impact of salinity levels on the treatment performance and membrane fouling of MBR seeded with sludge from saline industrial effluent treatment plants. A pilot-scale MBR received mixed saline industrial effluents at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.3 g COD/L·d and a feed-to-micro-organism (F/M) ratio of 0.33 g COD/g TSS. The effects of the variable salt concentrations of 5, 10, 20, and 25 g/L were investigated. The ranges of ammonia and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations were 22.2–26.3 mgN/L and 55.1–59.2 mgN/L, respectively. The MBR achieved promising results for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), with removal ranges of 95.4–97.2% and 98.3–98.8%, respectively. The system provides 93.2–96.7% and 81.6–92.5% for ammonia and TN removal. Up to a 20 g/L salinity level, there were no significant effects on treatment performance, but 25 g/L significantly declined daily and specific COD removal load. Despite this, residual values at 25 g/L were better and met the Saudi standard for effluent discharge. This is due to membrane fouling which declined the flux rate with a spontaneous reduction of OLR and F/M ratio. The MBR system inoculated with high-salinity-adapted sludge could be managed to release treated effluent that meets Saudi disposal limits by modifying the F/M ratio via reducing the flux or increasing the mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) concentration. The Electrodialysis with Filtration Membrane (EDFM) system has shown promise in juice enrichment, but further optimization is needed. This study evaluated the effect of processing duration (3 and 6 h) on juice composition, process efficiency, and membrane fouling. Results demonstrated a significant impact of processing time on juice composition, especially anthocyanin and mineral content. Two anthocyanin-depleted juices (−18.94% and −30.70%) and two anthocyanin-enriched juices (26.21% and 44.21%) were produced. Similar energy (1512.13 Wh/g of anthocyanins) was required to migrate equivalent amounts of anthocyanins over both time periods, with no impediment due to fouling observed, although the system's resistance increased (2.5-fold after 3 h, 3.2-fold after 6 h). Membrane fouling was characterized through conductivity, thickness, ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDX, and foulant identification. Minimal anthocyanin accumulation occurred on cation-exchange membranes (CEM), while anthocyanins and PACs concentrated within the filtering layer of filtration membranes (FM). However, fouling did not increase with longer processing. Structural alterations were noted in anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), suggesting instability under high electric fields. Overall, EDFM effectively enriched cranberry juice with anthocyanins, but further research is necessary to address AEM degradation under limiting current density conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hull and propeller biofouling assessment framework is presented and demonstrated using a bulk carrier as a case study corresponding to an operational period of two and a half years. The aim is to support the decision-making process for optimizing maintenance related to hull and propeller cleaning actions. For the degradation assessment, an appropriate key performance indicator is defined comparing the expected shaft power required with the measured power under the same operational conditions. The power prediction models are data-driven based on machine learning algorithms. The process includes feature engineering, filtering, and data smoothing, while an evaluation of regression algorithms of the decision tree family is performed. The extra trees algorithm was selected, presenting a mean absolute percentage error of 1.1%. The analysis incorporates two prediction models corresponding to two different approaches. In the first, the model is employed as a reference performance baseline representing the clean vessel. When applied to a dataset reflecting advanced stages of biofouling, an average power increase of 11.3% is predicted. In the second approach, the model entails a temporal feature enabling the examination of scenarios at different points in time. Considering synthetic data corresponding to 300 days since hull cleaning, it was derived that the fouled vessel required an average 20.5% increase in power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In contrast to expectations, even buoyant microplastics like polyethylene and polypropylene are found at high concentrations in deep sediment traps and deep-sea sediments. To explain the presence of such buoyant microplastic particles at great ocean depths, several vertical transport mechanisms are under discussion with biofouling as one of the most referred. Biofouling is thought to increase the density of microplastic particles to the point that they sink to the deep sea, but this has mostly been shown on large microplastic particles ≥ 1 mm. However, although microplastics are defined as particles between 1 and 5000 μm, most microplastics are < 100 μm. In the ocean plastic particles continuously fragment, converting each "large" particle into several "small" particles, and particle abundance increases drastically with decreasing size. We argue that biofouling is not a reasonable transport mechanism for small microplastic particles ≤ 100 μm, which form the majority of microplastics. Biofilm density depends on its community and composition. A biofilm matrix of extracellular polymeric substances and bacteria has a lower density than seawater, in contrast to diatoms or large organisms like mussels or barnacles. We suggest that a small microplastic particle cannot host a biofilm community consisting of the heavy organisms required to induce sinking. Furthermore, to reach the deep sea within a reasonable timespan, a microplastic particle needs to sink several meters per day. Therefore, the excess density has to not only exceed that of seawater, but also be large enough to enable rapid sinking. We thus argue that biofouling cannot be an efficient vertical transport mechanism for small microplastic. However, biofouling of small microplastic may promote the likelihood of its incorporation into sinking marine snow and increase the probability of its ingestion, allowing its transport to depth. The primary approach to managing biofouling in industrial water systems involves the large‐scale use of biocides. It is well‐established that biofilms are 'cell factories' that release planktonic cells even when challenged with antimicrobials. The effect of isothiazolinone on the metabolic activity and biomass of mixed Pseudomonas biofilms was monitored in real‐time using the CEMS‐BioSpec system. The exposure of biofilms to the minimum inhibitory concentration (1.25 mg L−1) of biocide did not impact planktonic cell production (log 7.5 CFU mL−1), while whole‐biofilm metabolic activity and biomass accumulation increased. Only the maximum biocide concentration (80 mg L−1) resulted in a change in planktonic cell yields and temporal inhibition of biofilm activity and biomass, a factor that needs due consideration in view of dilution in industrial settings. Interfacing the real‐time measurement of metabolic activity and biomass with dosing systems is especially relevant to optimizing the use of biocides in industrial water systems. The performance of heat pump systems for heating and cooling heavily relies on the thermal conditions of their reservoirs. This study introduces a novel thermal reservoir, detailing a 2017 project where the Municipality of Stavanger installed a heat exchanger system on the wall of a main wastewater tunnel beneath the city center. It provides a comprehensive account of the system's design, installation, and performance, and presents an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model that predicts heat pump capacity, electricity consumption, and outlet temperature across seasonal variations in wastewater temperatures. By integrating domain knowledge with the ANN, this study demonstrates the model's capability to detect anomalies in heat pump operations effectively. The network also confirms the consistent performance of the heat exchangers from 2020 to 2024, indicating minimal fouling impacts. This study establishes wastewater heat exchangers as a safe, effective, and virtually maintenance-free solution for heat extraction and rejection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biofouling, the accumulation of marine organisms on submerged surfaces, presents significant operational challenges across various marine industries. Traditional detection methods are labor intensive and costly, necessitating the development of automated systems for efficient monitoring. The study presented in this paper focuses on detecting biofouling on tidal stream turbine blades using camera-based monitoring. The process begins with dividing the video into a series of images, which are then annotated to identify and select the bounding boxes containing objects to be detected. These annotated images are used to train YOLO version 8 to detect biofouled and clean blades in the images. The proposed approach is evaluated using metrics that demonstrate the superiority of this YOLO version compared to previous ones. To address the issue of misdetection, a data augmentation approach is proposed and tested across different YOLO versions, showing its effectiveness in improving detection quality and robustness. Objectives The fouling and wetting of membranes in membrane distillation processes can significantly reduce membrane performance, thereby affecting overall process efficiency. The purpose of this study is to develop methods for restoring the performance of membranes used in a membrane distillation pilot plant operated in the Middle East by testing and optimizing various cleaning methods. This aims to maintain the long-term performance and improve the operational efficiency of the pilot plant through the reuse of restored membranes. Methods To analyze the main fouling substances on the hollow fiber membranes collected from a module operated in a pilot plant, FTIR, XRD, and SEM analysis techniques were employed. A lab-scale module was fabricated using the collected membranes, and cleaning methods were applied. Citric acid was used for cleaning to restore membrane performance, which was evaluated by measuring water permeability and conductivity before and after cleaning. Results and Discussion FTIR and XRD analyses revealed that the main fouling substances on the membranes used in the pilot plant were NaCl, CaCO3, and CaSO4. SEM and ICP analyses confirmed that the membranes near the feed inlet of the module experienced severer fouling compared to those near the outlet. The cleaning method involving pump circulation after inducing artificial wetting was found to be the most effective for restoring membrane performance. Notably, when a high concentration of citric acid was used, almost all fouling substances on the membrane surface were removed, restoring membrane performance to nearly its original state. Conclusion The cleaning method involving artificial wetting followed by pump circulation was determined to be the optimal method for successfully restoring the performance of membranes fouled and wetted in membrane distillation processes.

Rough surface structures filled with CW coating and grafted with the PDMS polymers were used to design the plant-based composite CW&PDMS coating that exhibit satisfactory antifouling properties and mechanically durable. The biofouling adhering to underwater facilities has a negative impact on the environment, energy, and economic development. However, conventional anti-adhesion organic silicon and organic fluorine materials often have poor adhesion properties and mechanical stability when combined with substrates. This work presents a novel strategy for preparing composite antifouling coatings that low surface energy plant-based carnauba wax (CW) covering through rough substrates and chemically bond with flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) oligomers or polymers. The CW coating adheres strongly to the substrate owing to the mobility of the liquated CW, which flows into the micro-nano structure of the substrate and solidifies on the solid surface. The polymerization reaction of (PDMS) oligomers compounded the coating, thereby creating a composite coating with superior lubricating and antifouling properties. This distinctive bonding process imbued the coating with exceptional characteristics, including remarkable mechanical stability in destructive tests as well as an impressive ability to repel fouling, such as protein attachment, bacterial adhesion, diatom deposition, and biofilm formation. This work systematically investigated the impact of the composition and structure of composite materials on their mechanical stability and resistance to fouling, and developed high-performance antifouling coatings in the real world. Abstract Of the processes that are approved to produce synthetic kerosene for use in jet fuel, about half produce olefinic kerosene that is hydrotreated. The alkene concentration in synthetic kerosene is indirectly regulated through the thermal oxidative stability specification. Perceptions about the deleterious influence of alkenes on thermal oxidative stability suggest that olefinic kerosene must be deeply hydrogenated. The extent of olefin saturation required has economic implications. To evaluate what an acceptable alkene concentration in synthetic kerosene is, the impact of alkene concentration on the outcome of the jet fuel thermal oxidative stability test (JFTOT) performed at 325°C in accordance with the ASTM D3241 standard test method was experimentally evaluated. Model synthetic kerosene mixtures to which different concentrations of alkenes (1‐decene, α‐methylstyrene, indene) were added, as well as control samples were studied. In the concentration range investigated, up to 10 wt% 1‐decene, 5 wt% α‐methylstyrene, and 2 wt% indene did not lead to increased fouling in the JFTOT. Fouling passed through a minimum value with increasing alkene concentration and alkene concentration on its own was a poor predictor of thermal oxidative stability. Analysis of the kerosene collected after passing through the JFTOT found measurable changes in density and refractive index. Dissolved oxygen reacting during thermal oxidative stability testing was accounted for mostly in oxygen‐containing products in the kerosene boiling range, which indicated that the heavier products were mainly hydrocarbon in nature. In addition to initiation by autoxidation, the investigation also pointed to the existence of a second thermally initiated fouling pathway that does not require the presence of oxygen.

The study aimed to explore the effects of biomass co-firing of coal using acacia wood bark at circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler coal-fired power plant with 110 MWe capacity. The analysis focused on main equipment parameters, including the potential for slagging, fouling, corrosion, agglomeration, fuel cost, and specific environmental factors. Initially, coal and acacia wood bark fuel were blended at a 3% mass ratio, with calorific values of 8.59 MJ/kg and 16.59 MJ/kg, respectively. The corrosion due to chlorine and slagging potential when using wood bark was grouped into the minor and medium categories. The results showed that co-firing at approximately 3% mass ratio contributed to changes in the upper furnace temperature due to the variation in heating value, high total humidity, and a less homogeneous particle size distribution. Significant differences were also observed in the temperature of the lower furnace area, showing the presence of a foreign object covering the nozzle, which disturbed the ignition process. A comparison of the seal pot temperature showed imbalances as observed from the temperature indicators installed on both sides of boiler, with specific fuel consumption (SFC) increasing by approximately 0.17%. During the performance test, the price of acacia wood bark was 0.034 USD/kg, resulting in fuel cost of 0.023355 USD/kWh, adding 0.061 cent/kWh to coal firing cost. Despite co-firing, the byproducts of the combustion process, such as SO2 and NOx, still met environmental quality standards in accordance with government regulations. However, a comprehensive medium- and long-term impact evaluation study should be carried out to implement co-firing operations using acacia wood bark at coal-fired power plant. Based on the characteristics, such as low calorific value, with high ash, total moisture, and alkali, acacia wood bark showed an increased potential to cause slagging and fouling.

The present investigation focuses on using commercially available MF, UF, and NF membranes to eliminate Fe from real groundwater. The impact of process parameters, including applied pressure, temperature, pH, time, and concentration, on flux and Fe removal% is investigated. Results of the permeation test confirm higher permeability for MF membranes (214.71 L/m2.h.bar) than that for NF (2.708 L/m2.h.bar) and UF (56.52 L/m2.h.bar) membranes. The FESEM-EDS characterization confirms the deposition of dominant foulant Fe particles over the membrane surface. At 2 bar applied pressure (temperature = 30 °C, pH = 6.13, and concentration = 6.62 ppm), MF, UF, and NF can eliminate 93.5, 90.2, and 100% Fe, respectively. However, UF and NF exhibit much lower fluxes (72.43 and 3.85 L/m2.h, respectively) compared to MF (317.13 L/m2.h) at the same process conditions. NF eliminates 100% Fe from start to end with rising pressure, while MF (62.16–100) and UF (87.09–100) show gradually improved removal rates. Above pH 6, all membranes demonstrate higher Fe rejection because the oxidation rate of ferrous iron increases at a high pH. With increasing concentration (6–500 ppm), Fe removal efficiency increases for NF (88.26–94.18%) but decreases for both MF (89.63–23.64%) and UF (27.66–14.4%). To validate experimental findings, five machine learning (ML) regression models are scrutinized using various statistical measures. This work evaluated an anaerobic sequencing batch membrane bioreactor (AnSBR-MBR) equipped with waste-based ceramic membranes for treating low-strength real drain wastewater. Two feeding regimes, viz. settled feed (Phase 1) and mixed feed (Phase 2) were compared. The biological performance (chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phosphate (PO43-) removal) and filtration performance (total suspended solids (TSS) removal and membrane fouling) were investigated. The reactor characteristics in terms of solids content, sludge settling behaviour, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were also assessed. In Phase 1, the settled feed (with the absence of particulate organic matter) resulted in low volatile suspended solids (VSS; 0.23 ± 0.15 g/L), causing low COD removal (28.38 ± 8.14%). In the mixed feed regime in Phase 2, VSS increased (1.82 ± 0.60 g/L) due to the organic content in the particulate matter, which gave microorganisms additional food, resulting in increased COD removal (47.42 ± 2.81%); this phase was also characterised by lower membrane fouling because of the lower EPS content. Marginally higher TSS removal was obtained as well in Phase 2 (96.72 ± 3.26%) than in Phase 1 (90.48 ± 8.14%). Membrane fouling caused by many direct and indirect triggering factors has become an obstacle to the application of membrane bioreactors (MBRs). The nonlinear relationship between those factors is subject to complex causality or affiliation, which is difficult to clarify for the diagnosis of membrane fouling. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a compressible diagnosis model (CDM) based on transfer entropy to facilitate the fault diagnosis of the root cause for membrane fouling. The novelty of this model includes the following points: Firstly, a framework of a CDM between membrane fouling and causal variables is built based on a feature extraction algorithm and mechanism analysis. The framework can identify fault transfer scenarios following the changes in operating conditions. Secondly, the fault transfer topology of a CDM based on transfer entropy is constructed to describe the causal relationship between variables dynamically. Thirdly, an information compressible strategy is designed to simplify the fault transfer topology. This strategy can eliminate the repetitious affiliation relationship, which contributes to diagnosing the root causal variables speedily and accurately. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed CDM is verified by the measured data from an actual MBR. Biofilms are a concern for spaceflight missions, given their propensity for biofouling systems and their potential threat to astronaut health. Herein, we describe a random positioning machine-based method for growing fluorescent protein-expressing streptococcal biofilms under simulated microgravity. Biofilms can be subsequently imaged by confocal microscopy without further manipulation, minimizing disruption of architecture. Of the processes that are approved to produce synthetic kerosene for use in jet fuel, about half produce olefinic kerosene that is hydrotreated. The alkene concentration in synthetic kerosene is indirectly regulated through the thermal oxidative stability specification. Perceptions about the deleterious influence of alkenes on thermal oxidative stability suggest that olefinic kerosene must be deeply hydrogenated. The extent of olefin saturation required has economic implications. To evaluate what an acceptable alkene concentration in synthetic kerosene is, the impact of alkene concentration on the outcome of the jet fuel thermal oxidative stability test (JFTOT) performed at 325°C in accordance with the ASTM D3241 standard test method was experimentally evaluated. Model synthetic kerosene mixtures to which different concentrations of alkenes (1‐decene, α‐methylstyrene, indene) were added, as well as control samples were studied. In the concentration range investigated, up to 10 wt% 1‐decene, 5 wt% α‐methylstyrene, and 2 wt% indene did not lead to increased fouling in the JFTOT. Fouling passed through a minimum value with increasing alkene concentration and alkene concentration on its own was a poor predictor of thermal oxidative stability. Analysis of the kerosene collected after passing through the JFTOT found measurable changes in density and refractive index. Dissolved oxygen reacting during thermal oxidative stability testing was accounted for mostly in oxygen‐containing products in the kerosene boiling range, which indicated that the heavier products were mainly hydrocarbon in nature. In addition to initiation by autoxidation, the investigation also pointed to the existence of a second thermally initiated fouling pathway that does not require the presence of oxygen. Commercial shipping activity plays a crucial role in the unintentional primary and secondary introduction of aquatic Non-Indigenous species (NIS), with ballast water (BW) and hull biofouling being the two major vectors of NIS transportation. The aim of this study is to identify potential high-risk donor port areas that may act as pools for NIS introduction in Saronikos Gulf, Greece. For the purpose of the study, we conducted a regional risk assessment and produced a NIS watch list based on the commercial vessel arrivals at the major ports of the Saronikos Gulf (Piraeus and Elefsis) for the period 2020–2022. In our risk analysis, we used the two most important factors for ship-mediated species introductions identified in the literature: salinity and biogeographic region of the voyage last origin ports. Then, combined with data on vessel arrivals, based on marine traffic data collected from the Marine Traffic online platform, we produced a NIS watch list for the study area. The most highrisk ports for primary introductions were found to be in the Temperate Northern Atlantic (e.g. Gemlik, Ambarli, Asyaport and Derince in Türkiye, Sines in Portugal), Western Indo-Pacific (e.g. Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Aqaba in Jordan) and the Central Indo-Pacific (e.g. Singapore). For secondary introduction, the most high-risk voyage origin ports are located in the Levantine Sea (e.g. Limassol in Cyprus, Alexandria and Port Said in Egypt, Haifa and Ashdod in Israel, Iskenderun, Mersin and Nemrut in Türkiye), the Aegean Sea (e.g. Izmir in Türkiye) and the Ionian Sea (e.g. Marsaxlokk in Malta). Our watch list included 44 high risk and 13 medium risk NIS to be transferred to Saronikos Gulf. Of these, 38 high-risk species are already present in the Mediterranean, 6 high-risk species are absent from the Mediterranean and 18 species pose a high risk for both primary and secondary introduction. Karst caves, formed by the erosion of soluble carbonate rocks, provide unique ecosystems characterized by stable temperatures and high humidity. These conditions support diverse microbial communities, including wall microbial fouling, aquatic biofilms, and planktonic communities. This study discloses the taxonomic diversity of protists in aquatic biotopes of Shulgan-Tash Cave, a culturally significant site and popular tourist destination, by 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding. Our findings reveal the rich protist communities in the cave's aquatic biotopes, with the highest diversity observed in Blue Lake at the cave entrance. In contrast, Distant Lake in the depth of the cave was inhabited by specific communities of plankton, mats, and pool fingers, which exhibited lower richness and evenness, and were adapted to extreme conditions (cold, darkness, and limited nutrients). High-rank taxa including Opisthokonta, Stramenopiles, and Rhizaria dominated all biotopes, aligning with observations from other subterranean environments. Specific communities of biotopes inside the cave featured distinct dominant taxa: amoeboid stramenopile (Synchromophyceae) and flagellates (Choanoflagellatea and Sandona) in mats; flagellates (Choanoflagellatea, Bicoecaceae, Ancyromonadida) and amoeboid protists (Filasterea) in pool fingers; flagellates (Ochromonadales, Glissomonadida, Synchromophyceae), fungi-like protists (Peronosporomycetes), and fungi (Ustilaginomycotina) in plankton. The specificity of the communities was supported by LEfSe analysis, which revealed enriched or differentially abundant protist taxa in each type of biotope. The predominance of Choanoflagellatea in the communities of cave mats and pool fingers, as well as the predominance of Synchromophyceae in the cave mats, appears to be a unique feature of Shulgan-Tash Cave. The cold-tolerant yeast Malassezia recorded in other caves was present in both plankton and biofilm communities, suggesting its resilience to low temperatures. However, no potentially harmful fungi were detected, positioning this research as a baseline for future monitoring. Our results emphasize the need for ongoing surveillance and conservation efforts to protect the fragile ecosystems of Shulgan-Tash Cave from human-induced disturbances and microbial invasions. Blue energy obtained by salinity gradient can be generated by mixing two saline solutions having different salt concentrations. According to researchers working in this area, about 80% of the current global electricity demand could potentially be covered by this energy source. There are basically two membrane technologies so-called pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) that are capable to generate electrical energy from salinity gradient. The pressure driven PRO process is more suitable for energy generation from highly concentrated brines. However, RED is more favorable for power generation by mixing seawater and river water. In RED process, ion exchange membranes (IEMs) placed between two electrodes in a stack were employed for transport of ions. Thus, an electrical current is obtained at the electrodes by electron transport through redox reactions. This review gives an overview of RED as a pioneering technology for salinity gradient energy (SGE) generation. This experimental study explores the mitigation of membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) through the combined use of granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC). The research assesses the impact of these materials on the fouling resistance, critical flux, and permeate quality using various mixed liquor suspended solids concentrations and carbon dosages. The results indicate that the GAC-PAC combination significantly reduces the total filtration resistance, particularly the cake layer resistance, by 11.7% to 13.6% compared to setups without activated carbon or with the individual carbon types. The study also reveals that this combination decreased the fouling rate by 15% to 24% at critical flux steps, demonstrating substantial improvements in fouling mitigation and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the GAC-PAC combination, which produces an adsorption process, enhances the permeate quality, achieving the near-complete removal of organic matter, total nitrogen, and turbidity, with total phosphorus removal reaching 99%. These findings demonstrate that the combined use of GAC and PAC not only reduces membrane fouling but also improves the overall MBR performance, making it a viable strategy for enhancing the efficiency of wastewater treatment processes. The extended immersion of ships in seawater frequently results in biofouling, a condition characterized by the accumulation of marine organisms such as barnacles and algae. To combat this issue, the application of anti-fouling coatings to the hull surfaces of vessels has emerged as one of the most effective strategies. In response to the increasing global emphasis on environmental sustainability, there is a growing demand for anti-fouling coatings that not only demonstrate superior anti-fouling efficacy but also adhere to stringent environmental standards. The traditional use of organotin-based self-polishing anti-fouling coatings, known for their high toxicity, has been prohibited due to environmental concerns. Consequently, there is a progressive shift toward the development and application of environmentally friendly anti-fouling coatings. This paper reviews the toxicity and application limitations associated with conventional anti-fouling coatings. It provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the field, including the development of novel self-polishing anti-fouling coatings, low surface energy coatings, biomimetic coatings, and nanostructured coatings, each leveraging distinct anti-fouling mechanisms. The paper evaluates the composition and performance of these emerging coatings and identifies key technical challenges that remain unresolved. It also proposes a multi-faceted approach to addressing these challenges, suggesting potential solutions for enhancing the effectiveness and environmental compatibility of anti-fouling technologies. Moisture from ar is often responsible for biofouling and corrosion on the inner walls of the air filtration system and there by affecting the bacteria colony forming units (CFU Count). This phenomenon is more prevalent in humid environment. Applying electroless Nickel-Copper-Phosphorous (Ni-Cu-P) coating on mild steel helps to prevent bio fouling. An air filtration unit with inner walls coated with nano-TiO2 and inlet filter mesh made of Luffa and coated activated charcoal and zeolite is used in the experimentation process. The inner chamber is also radiated by band C of Ultraviolet sources (UVC) with 254 nm wavelength. A sudden spike in bacteria colony count has been observed as the air filtration unit remains in off mode for prolonged duration of time. The efficacy of the air filtration unit upon remaining in off- mode for a long time has been determined in the present work considering the bacterial colony count as response. Electroless Ni-Cu-P coating has been applied at selected locations previously affected by biofouling. A predictive model has been developed following response surface methodology using bacterial colony count as response and the composition of the electroless coating bath as the process parameters. Genetic algorithm was applied for the determination of the best possible constitution of chemical coating bath for the minimization of the bacterial colony count. Bacteria Colony formation was significantly affected by the sources of Nickel ion, Copper ion and the concentration of reducing agent in the electroless Ni-Cu-P coating bath. The International Maritime Organization has adopted a revision to the 2023 International Maritime Organization biofouling guidelines and has been discussing the development of guidelines for evaluating the efficacy of inwater cleaning systems. In hull cleaning, which involves aquatic invasive species removal, capture is considered very important in preventing the release of by-products. However, capture efficacy is difficult to evaluate due to the absence of unified evaluation guidelines or standardized methods. Here, we describe a new test method for evaluating the capture efficacy of in-water cleaning systems, using artificial barnacles that simulate the physical characteristics of actual barnacles. The test was designed to evaluate the impact of in-water cleaning on biocide release and biofouling organisms in the marine environment. We used a test plate with artificial barnacles attached to evaluate the capture efficacy with respect to the fouling rating. This test overcomes limitations in the evaluation of the capture efficacy of in-water cleaning systems and provides a reference for the development of more comprehensive tests and in-water cleaning regulation in the future. To endow SiC ceramic membranes a catalytic self-cleaning capability, a pore-functionalized SiC ceramic membrane with impregnated a perovskite-type catalyst La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 was fabricated by a urea-assisted one-step combustion method. Diffraction of X-ray (XRD), canning electronic microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to investigate the effects of the impregnating of La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 on SiC membrane pore-structure (La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 -CM). The catalytic self-cleaning performance of the as-prepared membranes was assessed through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under a cross-flow filtration mode. Results indicate that La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 has been successfully impregnated into the macropores of SiC membranes without pore blocking, and 92.4 % of the flux recovery rate (FRR) was achieved when the PMS concentration was 70 mM and catalytic flushing time was 45 min. Therefore, the La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 impregnated SiC membrane exhibited excellent catalytic self-cleaning property, which can effectively avoid the environmental pollution and the deterioration of membrane materials caused by chemical cleaning for membrane fouling. In addition, the radical quenching experiment and electron spin resonance (EPR) tests were conducted in the catalytic self-cleaning process, and the results suggested that the hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 •‾) are simultaneously captured and ⋅OH is the dominant active species. Parasmittina is the most representative cheilostome genus of the family Smittinidae, often reported in the fouling non-indigenous marine community. Here, we present a review of Parasmittina species reported in the Southwestern Atlantic including the characterization of one species from Argentina (P. dubitata) and ten from the Brazilian coast: P. abrolhosensis, P. alba, P. bimucronata, P. ligulata comb. nov., P. longirostrata, P. pinctatae, P. serrula, P. simpulata, P. winstonae and the new species Parasmittina falciformis sp. nov. The new species is characterized by a smooth distally primary orifice with 1–2 oral spines, large lyrula, serrated condyles with hooked tips, and two types of avicularia–small and subtriangular and large sublanceolate. This study does not recognize four species previous recorded in Brazil: reports of P. betamorphaea and P. trispinosa are now assigned to P. pinctatae; records of P. munita belong to P. falciformis sp. nov.; and reports of P. spathulata encompass at least two taxa, including P. abrolhosensis and P. simpulata. In this study, five species complexes (P. alba, P. longirostrata, P. serrula, P. simpulata and P. winstonae) were identified and require further investigations. While six species characterized here were first described based on specimens from the Southwestern Atlantic (P. abrolhosensis, P. alba, P. dubitata, P. ligulata comb. nov., P. simpulata and P. falciformis sp. nov.), the remaining species are mainly known from the Indo-Pacific. These taxa are here recognized as exotic (P. longirostrata) and cryptogenic (P. bimucronata, P. pinctatae, P. serrula and P. winstonae) in the studied area. Most of the non-native taxa are widespread along the Brazilian coast, growing on both artificial and natural surfaces, indicating that they are well-established in the area. As non-native bryozoans can negatively influence the environment, affecting human economic activities and beach usage, further studies on the fauna presented here are suggested to determine the origin of these taxa and help prevent bioinvasion events along the SW Atlantic. Introduction: Net biofouling has a significant impact for the global salmon industry in the seawater grow-out stage in terms of its management. Current mitigation strategies occur primarily through the regular removal of biofouling using in situ cleaning. While in situ net cleaning is effective there is uncertainty as to whether the equipment or dispersed material has an impact upon the fish in the cages. Through direct contact with the environment, the significant surface area of the gill including its microbiome is directly exposed to the acute environmental changes generated by net cleaning. This study aimed to provide a detailed understanding of the impact of in situ net cleaning on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) gill health. Methods: Three field trials were conducted on commercial fish farms in western Norway. Fouling organisms on net pens and flushed particles during in situ cleaning were identified and screened for major fish pathogens. Hydrographic profile measurements were performed to measure the impact on water quality. Gill samples were examined for histopathological changes, immune gene expression, and the prevalence of major pathogens. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was employed to explore the impact of net cleaning on gill microbiome. Results and discussion: Data obtained from these trials identified a diversity of fouling species including hydroids, algae, skeleton shrimps, and filter feeders on net pens, a direct impact on measured water quality indicators, a moderate change in gill inflammatory and antigen presentation activity at the level of mRNA, and a large significant change in gillmicrobiome. Observed changes in gill microbial community involved a decrease in bacterial richness coupled to an increase in identified bacterial genera related to negative health consequences. Parallel analyses for pathogens load in biofouling organisms and flushed particles highlighted the presence of several fish bacteria and parasites. However, minor changes were detected in salmon gill pathogen diversity and loading. Our results suggest that biofouling organisms may actas transient reservoirs for somefishpathogensbutnotvirusesandthatgillmicrobial dysbiosis could be related to the host stress response during and post net cleaning. Balanomorph (acorn) barnacles are found throughout the world's coastal oceans, and their success is dependent on a hard, mineralized, outer shell. Although macro-scale morphology of barnacle shells has been studied extensively, relatively little is known about shell properties at the micron-scale and if such properties vary among species. We assessed shell structure, mechanics, and composition in seven species of balanomorph barnacles from five genera. Three species, Amphibalanus amphitrite, Amphibalanus improvisus, and Austrominius modestus, were laboratory-reared, enabling direct comparison of shell properties of barnacles grown under the same conditions for the same duration. Four other species, Semibalanus balanoides, Amphibalanus eburneus, Chthamalus stellatus, and Tetraclita rubescens, were field-collected. At the macro- and meso-scales, shell properties varied markedly among species, with differences in the number of shell plates, the presence of canals within the plates, mineralization of the base, and shell plate thickness. At the micron-scale, however, structure was remarkably similar among species. Plates of all species were constructed of irregular micron-scale crystallites, with a broad range of crystallite dimensions observed within the same shell. Similarly, micromechanical properties did not vary among species, regardless of testing orientation. Calcium carbonate was identified as calcite in all species assessed with no other mineral phases present, and calcium content did not vary among species. Hence, despite variation in the overall macro- and meso-scale morphology of barnacles, all appear to be built using the same, evolutionarily conserved, mineralization pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct ultrafiltration (UF) is anticipated to be a promising technology for rural water supply due to its stable permeate quality and ease of automatic operation & maintenance. However, seasonal high turbidity in the surface water resources caused severe membrane fouling, resulting in the requirement of frequent cleaning of the UF process, and limiting the broad application of the direct UF in treating rural surface water. To address this issue, this study investigated the feasibility and mechanism of in situ aeration in alleviating the UF membrane fouling in treating surface water with high turbidity (200, 500, and 800 NTU). The results indicated that with the weak aeration (0.4 m3/(m2·min)), the concentration of polysaccharides accumulated on the membrane surface was high, and serious membrane fouling was observed. With medium aeration (0.8 and 1.2 m3/(m2·min)), bubble shear force could effectively reduce the foulants accumulated on the membrane surface to alleviate the membrane fouling. During the whole experiment, the optimal group (1.2 m3/(m2·min)) showed a 45% lower TMP compared to the control. However, strong aeration (1.6 m3/(m2·min)) caused floc breakage and was less conducive to the membrane fouling control compared to the medium aeration. Furthermore, under in situ aeration, the contents of polysaccharide accumulated on the membrane surface and deposited in the membrane pores were reduced by 8.85%~49.29%, and the structures of the cake layer turned out to be porous and permeable, implying that in situ aeration could significantly modify the structure and composition of the cake layer, contributing to the UF membrane fouling control in treating the seasonal high-turbidity surface water. Electrochemical descaling devices have been widely used in the industrial field due to their broad applicability, convenience of operation, and cost-effectiveness. However, there are many factors that affect the descaling performance of electrochemical descaling devices, such as the selection of electrode materials, the shape and layout of the anode and cathode, the voltage and current of electrochemical equipment, the flow rate, temperature, and mineral content. Existing research has primarily focused on the influence of electrode materials and current density on descaling efficiency, while neglecting external factors such as water flow rate and temperature. In order to further explore the internal and external factors affecting the descaling performance of descaling machines, this study constructed an experimental platform for a descaling machine fouling device. Different voltages, currents, water flow rates, and temperatures were studied to assess the descaling efficiency of the descaling machine. The results indicated that under the conditions of a temperature of 30 °C, a flow rate of 0.35 m/s, a voltage of 24 V, and a current of 10 A, the fouling resistance effect of the electrochemical descaling device was optimal. Ultrasound waves have been employed to control marine biofouling but their effects on fouling organisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of ultrasound waves on barnacle (Tetraclita stalactifera cyprid larvae) pre-settlement behavior. Substrate inspection constituted most of the larval time budget, with a focus on the bottom surface rather than lateral or air–water interfaces. The frequency of substrate inspection decreased at 10 kPa when compared to higher acoustic pressures, while the time spent in the water column had an opposite trend. Various larval swimming modes were observed, including rotating, sinking, walking, and cruising, with rotating being dominant. Barnacle larvae exhibited higher speeds and less complex trajectories when subjected to ultrasound in comparison to controls. The impact of ultrasound waves on barnacle cyprid larvae behavior had a non-linear pattern, with lower acoustic pressure (10 kPa) inducing more effective substrate rejection than higher (15 and 20 kPa) intensities. Microfiltration is a commonly used pressure-driven membrane separation process for various applications. Depending on the manufacturing method, either tortuous or capillary pore structures are obtained. The structure plays an important role in controlling flux, selectivity, but most importantly, the fouling tendency of the membrane. This review attempts to cover past and current developments in physical morphology and fouling characterization methods, along with the manufacturing methods for microfiltration membranes. The limitations and advantages of direct microscopic techniques and gas-liquid displacement as an indirect method are discussed for physical characterization. Additionally, the current state of the art and technical challenges for various in-situ and ex-situ fouling characterization techniques are also discussed. Metamorphosis for many marine invertebrates is triggered by external cues, commonly produced by bacteria. For larvae of Hydroides elegans, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the biofilm-dwelling bacterium Cellulophaga lytica induces metamorphosis. To determine whether bacterial LPS is a common metamorphosis-inducing factor for this species, we compare larval responses to LPS from 3 additional inductive Gram-negative marine biofilm bacteria with commercially available LPS from 3 bacteria not known to induce metamorphosis. LPS from all the inductive bacteria trigger metamorphosis, while LPS from non-inductive isolated marine bacteria do not. We then ask, which part of the LPS is the inductive element, the lipid (Lipid-A) or the polysaccharide (O-antigen), and find it is the latter for all four inductive bacteria. Finally, we examine the LPS subunits from two strains of the same bacterial species, one inductive and the other not, and find the LPS and O-antigen to be inductive from only the inductive bacterial strain. Analysis of products of marine biofilms that induce settlement of invertebrate larvae reveals a specific bacterial LPS component, the O-antigen polysaccharide, to be the inductive cue. A review of existing research on signatures of gas turbine faults is presented. Faults that influence the aerothermodynamic performance of compressors and turbines, such as fouling, tip clearance increase, erosion, variable geometry system malfunction, and object impact damage, are covered. The signatures of such faults, which are necessary for establishing efficient gas path diagnostic methods, are studied. They are expressed through mass flow capacity and efficiency deviations. The key characteristics of the ratio of such deviations are investigated in terms of knowledge existing in published research. Research based on experimental studies, field data, and results of detailed fluid dynamic computations that exist today is found to provide such information. It is shown that although such signatures may be believed to have a unique correspondence to the type of component fault, this is only true when a particular engine and fault type are considered. The choice of diagnostic methods by developers should, thus, be guided by such considerations instead of using values taken from the literature without considering the features of the problem at hand. [Display omitted] Humic acids (HA) are ubiquitous in surface waters, leading to significant fouling challenges. While zwitterion-like and zwitterionic surfaces have emerged as promising candidates for antifouling, a quantitative understanding of molecular interaction mechanism, particularly at the nanoscale, still remains elusive. In this work, the intermolecular forces between HA and charged, zwitterion-like or zwitterionic monolayers in aqueous environments were quantified using atomic force microscope. Compared to cationic MTAC ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride), which exhibited an adhesion energy of ∼1.342 mJ/m2 with HA due to the synergistic effect of electrostatic attraction and possible cation-π interaction, anionic SPMA (3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) showed a weaker adhesion energy (∼0.258 mJ/m2) attributed to the electrostatic repulsion. Zwitterion-like MTAC/SPMA mixture, driven by electrostatic attraction between opposite charges, formed a hydration layer that prevented the interaction with HA, thereby considerably reducing adhesion energy to ∼0.123 mJ/m2. In contrast, zwitterionic MPC (2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) and DMAPS ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide) displayed ultralow adhesion energy (0.06–0.07 mJ/m2) with HA, arising from their strong dipole moments which could induce a tight hydration layer that effectively inhibited HA fouling. The pH-mediated electrostatic interaction resulted in the increased adhesion energy for MTAC but decreased adhesion energy for SPMA with elevated pH, while the adhesion energy for zwitterion-like and zwitterionic surfaces was independent of environmental pH. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation confirmed the strong binding capability of MPC and DMAPS with water molecules (∼–12 kcal mol−1). This work provides valuable insights into the molecular interaction mechanisms underlying humic-substance-fouling resistance of charged, zwitterion-like and zwitterionic materials at the nanoscale, shedding light on developing more effective strategy for HA antifouling in water treatment. Molecular weight (MW) of organics was one of the important factors influencing membrane fouling propensity. This study identified critical foulants of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in reclaimed water by MW fractionation. MW > 10 kDa component was identified as the critical fouling contributor (CFC) in secondary effluent (SE), which accounted for only 13 ± 5% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) but contributed to 86 ± 11% of flux decline. Throughout 12-month monitoring, SE and MW > 10 kDa component showed a similar fouling variation tendency: apparently higher fouling potential in winter and lower in summer, while MW < 10 kDa component presented minor fouling changes. Morphology of membrane fouled by CFC characterized a smooth and thick foulant layer on membrane surface. CFC was mainly composed of proteins and polysaccharides, and a protein-polysaccharide-protein "sandwich" fouling layer structure was preferentially formed on membrane surface. extended Derjaguin–Landau-Verwey–Overbeek (xDLVO) analysis demonstrated that strong attractive interactions between CFC and membrane surface dominated the fouling process. Furthermore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation revealed strong filtration resistance of CFC, confirming its significant fouling potential. Dual effects including attractive interactions and advantageous ridge-and-valley surface appearance accounted for the significant fouling propensity of MW > 10 kDa component and glean valuable insights into RO fouling mechanisms of reclaimed water in practical application. Electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) have emerged as a cutting‐edge solution for membrane distillation (MD), recognized for their highly porous and interconnected architecture. This distinctive structure enables them to offer minimal mass transfer resistance, making them exceptionally suited for high‐efficiency membrane‐based separation processes. However, the very porosity that defines their strength also renders them vulnerable to fouling, scaling, and wetting during operation, which in turn compromises their performance. Current research efforts are geared toward overcoming these obstacles by refining the surface design and characteristics of ENMs. This review delves into the latest advancements in surface‐enhanced electrospun nanofiber membranes tailored for MD applications. Water scarcity in Tunisia's semi-arid regions necessitates advanced brackish water desalination solutions. This study evaluates the long-term performance and fouling characteristics of the largest brackish water reverse osmosis desalination plant in southern Tunisia over a period of 5026 days. The plant employs two-stage spiral-wound membrane elements to treat groundwater with a salinity of 3.2 g L−1. The pre-treatment process includes oxidation, sand filtration, and cartridge filtration, along with polyphosphonate antiscalant dosing. Membrane performance was assessed through the analysis of operational data, standardization of permeate flow (Qps) and salt passage (SPs), and the calculation of water (A), solute (B), and ionic (Bj) permeability coefficients. Over the operational period, there was an increase in operating pressure, pressure drop, and permeate conductivity, accompanied by a gradual increase in SPs as well as in the solute B and ionic Bj permeability coefficients. The average B increased by 82%, reflecting a decrease in solute rejection over time. Additionally, the ionic permeability coefficients for both SO42− and Cl− ions increased, with Cl− showing an 88% increase and SO42− showing an 87% increase. The produced water's salinity increased by 67%, indicating a significant loss of membrane performance. To identify the cause of these problems, membrane characterization was analyzed using visual inspection, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The characterization revealed the complex nature of the foulants, with a predominant presence of calcium sulfate, along with minor quantities of calcite, dolomite, and silica. The extent of CaSO4 deposition suggests poor antiscaling efficiency, highlighting the critical importance of selecting an effective antiscalant to mitigate membrane fouling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biofilms are groups of microorganisms protected by self-secreted extracellular substances. Biofilm formation on the surface of biomaterial or engineering materials becomes a severe challenge. It has caused significant health, environmental, and societal concerns. It is believed that biofilms lead to life-threatening infection, medical implant failure, foodborne disease, and marine biofouling. To address these issues, tremendous effort has been made to inhibit biofilm formation on materials. Biofilms are extremely difficult to treat once formed, so designing material and coating bearing functional groups that are capable of resisting biofilm formation has attracted increasing attention for the last two decades. Many types of antibiofilm strategies have been designed to target different stages of biofilm formation. Development of the antibiofilm material can be classified into antifouling material, antimicrobial material, fouling release material, and integrated antifouling/antimicrobial material. This review summarizes relevant research utilizing these four approaches and comments on their antibiofilm properties. The feature of each method was compared to reveal the research trend. Artificial structures act as points of entry for non-indigenous species (NIS) in port areas and may support higher abundance and richness of them. The studies about NIS are increasing, but studies focusing on the variations in temporal recruitment and ecological mechanisms are still scarce. Thus, the aim of this work was to determine the colonization and development of non-indigenous sessile fouling species over two types of substrates (electrolytic carbonated and steel) during 12 months of immersion in the Alicante harbor. The biofouling communities of both substrates were analyzed in terms of abundance and species richness by status (native, cryptogenic, and NIS), and NIS assemblages of both substrates were studied by means of multivariate analyses. In total, 53 different species were identified, 38 in steel (six NIS and six cryptogenic) and 50 in the carbonated substrate (six NIS and 10 cryptogenic). Most NIS were more abundant and diverse after 9 months of immersion and had a preference for carbonated substrates. Furthermore, most of them were positively correlated in both substrates (mainly in steel) and it is noted that the number of NIS in the port of Alicante is increasing as new records have been detected. Material testing, particularly in biological applications, can be an extensive endeavor leading to a significant investment of resources. This article details a simple material and coating testing assay series that provides insights into leaching, antibacterial, antifouling, and foul-release characteristics. The results of these methods can guide future research, applications, and development efforts by providing data from which to make informed decisions. A material or coating can be quickly assessed in industrial and academic settings with minimal resources by employing a set of benign, single-species direct-contact toxicity assays and simple spectroscopic and microscopic analysis methods. Managing fouling from organic and biological materials has consistently posed a significant challenge in water and wastewater treatment via membrane technology. This research aimed to develop a new membrane with hydrophilic characteristics and assess its resistance to fouling. Hollow fiber membranes were created from PVDF polymer, enhanced with zeolite-Fe2O3 nanoparticle additives, using glutaraldehyde-H2SO4 cross-linking to incorporate hydrophilic elements. These modified membranes demonstrated notable surface porosity and improved hydrophilicity, with a reduced water droplet contact angle of 40° ± 0.6. The increased porosity led to a pure water flux of 141 L/m2h, a recovery rate (FRR) of 97 %, and rejection rates above 93 %.

Freshwater resources are becoming limited and are rapidly getting polluted due to industrialization and urbanization. Water pollution is a pervasive global challenge both in terms of scarcity and quality. Among other sources, wastewater discharged through agricultural practices are major contributor to environmental pollution. The leading cause of contaminants is the runoff of fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and animal waste into waterbodies. Conventional treatment methods efficiently remove large particles, organic matter, and nutrients but require extensive infrastructure and produce significant sludge. In contrast, membrane filtration offers superior purification and reuse potential by using semi-permeable membranes to selectively remove contaminants, including suspended solids and dissolved ions. This study examines membrane filtration principles and technologies, emphasizing their role in delivering high-quality effluent for discharge or reuse. The study identifies fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides as major agricultural contaminants and highlights conventional techniques' ineffectiveness in achieving high purification levels. Membrane filtration effectively remediates a wide range of pollutants, but fouling remains a challenge, addressed by antifouling agents and advanced membrane materials in hybrid processes. The study concludes by highlighting the reusability aspect of membrane filtration in agricultural systems and the potential applications of reclaimed water. This study emphasizes the need for advanced membrane materials and integrated systems for effective utilisation of membrane filtration.
