Introduction: The study aimed to analyze the characteristics of patients admitted to the neurology department of a tertiary hospital who subsequently died, focusing on those with high disease severity. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who died among those admitted to the neurology department of a regional tertiary hospital from 2013 to 2021. Clinical, radiological, and laboratory results of the included patients were collected, and their primary diagnoses, duration from time of admission to death, and direct causes of death were analyzed. Furthermore, the patients were categorized into subgroups based on sex (male and female), primary diagnosis (ischemic and non-ischemic stroke), and cancer diagnosis for comparative analysis. Results: Of 187 deaths, the primary diagnoses were ischemic stroke (131 cases), seizures (19 cases), encephalitis and encephalopathy (18 cases), and other conditions (19 cases). The direct causes of death included ischemic stroke in 68 patients, sepsis in 33, cerebral hemorrhage in 19, pneumonia in 15, acute kidney injury in nine, status epilepticus in seven, and other causes in 36. Pneumonia, cerebral hemorrhage, acute kidney injury, and status epilepticus were the more prevalent direct causes of death in men, whereas ischemic stroke and sepsis were more prevalent in women. Additionally, sepsis, pneumonia, acute kidney injury, and status epilepticus, as direct causes of death, were significantly higher among patients with a primary diagnosis of non-ischemic stroke than among those with a primary diagnosis of ischemic stroke. Furthermore, there were differences in some pre-existing diseases and laboratory findings when comparing between the cancer group and the non-cancer group. Discussion: Ischemic stroke was the primary diagnosis and direct cause of death in a high proportion of patients. Other noteworthy direct causes of death were cerebral hemorrhage and infections such as sepsis and pneumonia. Objective: Dengue fever is a rapidly spreading viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, and it is becoming a global concern. This study aimed to assess the awareness, attitude, and performance of the people in Hormozgan province in carrying out preventive behaviors and dengue fever control methods. Method: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 1401 in Bandar Abbas, Iran. A total of 642 men and women participated in the study, and a researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic information, awareness, attitude, and performance. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings: The study included 642 citizens of Bandar Abbas, with the majority being male. The average scores for awareness, attitude, and performance were relatively low, indicating insufficient knowledge and weak preventive behaviors regarding dengue fever. Conclusion: The findings suggest a need for educational programs to increase awareness and preventive behaviors among the citizens, especially in essential areas such as protected coverage against mosquito bites and inspection of water accumulation sites in homes. Natural history collections are invaluable reference collections. Digitizing these collections is a transformative process that improves the accessibility, preservation, and exploitation of specimens and associated data in the long term. Arthropods make up the majority of zoological collections. However, arthropods are small, have detailed color textures and share small, complex and shiny structures, which poses a challenge to conventional digitization methods. Sphaeroptica is a multi-images viewer that uses a sphere of oriented images. It allows the visualization of insects including their tiniest features, the positioning of landmarks, and the extraction of 3D coordinates for measuring linear distances or for use in geometric morphometrics analysis. The quantitative comparisons show that the measures obtained with Sphaeroptica are similar to the measurements derived from 3D μCT models with an average difference inferior to 1%, while featuring the high resolution of color stacked pictures with all details like setae, chaetae, scales, and other small and/or complex structures. Shaeroptica was developed for the digitization of small arthropods but it can be used with any sphere of aligned images resulting from the digitization of objects or specimens with complex surface and shining, black, or translucent texture which cannot easily be digitized using structured light scanner or Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry. Antidepressant response is a multifactorial process related to biological and environmental factors, where brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) may play an important role in modulating depressive and anxious symptoms. We aimed to analyze how BDNF impacts antidepressant response, considering the levels of anxiety. Methods: A total of 40 depressed adults were included. We evaluated initial serum BDNF, anxiety through the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the severity of depressive symptoms by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). Participants received antidepressant treatment for 8 weeks, and response to treatment was evaluated according to the final HDRS scores. Results: Basal BDNF was higher in responders compared to non-responder depressed patients, in addition to being inversely associated with the severity of anxiety and depression. Conclusions: Baseline BDNF serum is an adequate predictive factor for response to antidepressant treatment with SSRI, with lower pre-treatment levels of BDNF associated with higher anxiety symptoms after treatment. Background and Aims: Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common chronic diseases. Health care workers specially “Behvarz” due to their wide range of duties, have the potential role in delivering education and prevention of dental caries. The purpose of the present study was to assess the perspective of “Behvarz” working in health care centers of Kordkooy city regarding oral health. Materials and Methods: Focus group discussions was conducted with a convenient sample of “Behvarz” working in health centers of Kordkooy city. Total number of 26 Behvarz with the mean work experience of 13 years took part in the study. After obtaining informed consent, group discussions performed in- person (2 groups of 7 and 2 groups of 6 participants) in health centers considering universal precautions. Two researchers coordinated the discussions. Five questions proposed on dental service utilization and oral health challenges and data collection continued until saturation obtained. The content of the discussion recorded and transcribed verbatim. For content analysis, two raters independently coded the content; sub-themes and themes were then extracted and consensus obtained. Results: More than half of the participants were 34 years of age and older. Regarding the challenges related to dental care in health centers, the main themes were; resource limitation, workload, lack of awareness of “Behvarz” role, limited access, economic barriers to prevention and care. Regarding the challenges to prevention, the main themes were; poor knowledge of patients, limited oral health related knowledge of “Behvarz”, and human resources. The main suggestions were emphasizing on the role of schools, mothers and patient education. Conclusion: Our research showed that despite the important role of “Behvarz” in delivering oral health promotion at the population level, this role is neglected and needs further attention. Introduction and aim. In this review, we suggest ways to improve diabetes mellitus (DM) care in Nigeria from a Health Promotion and Education (HPE) perspective by addressing the gap in DM care through the adoption of strategies from the Ottawa Charter and National Health Promotion Policy (NHPP) guidelines. Material and methods. This review conducted a comprehensive literature search on Africa Journal Online, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct, from 1986 to 2023, using relevant keywords. Analysis of the literature. The adoption of the Ottawa charter and NHPP remains a key strategy in addressing the gap in DM care in Nigeria. This could be achieved by the adoption of population-focused multi-sectoral interventions encompassing legislation, regulation, and fiscal measures, creating sustaining and expanding health-promoting environments to reduce modifiable risk factors, and reorienting the primary health care services to aid the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of DM patients. Conclusion. This review concluded that the government and other critical stakeholders should adopt the HPE strategies that covers increased financing, strict legislation on DM modifiable risk factors, reorientation of the primary healthcare system, and capacity building for HPE practitioners into DM care in Nigeria as a strategy to improving DM care and prevention in Nigeria. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a key factor in stress adaptation and avoidance of a social stress behavioral response. Recent studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in stressed mice is brain region-specific, particularly involving the corticolimbic system, including the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Determining how brain-derived neurotrophic factor participates in stress processing in different brain regions will deepen our understanding of social stress psychopathology. In this review, we discuss the expression and regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in stress-sensitive brain regions closely related to the pathophysiology of depression. We focused on associated molecular pathways and neural circuits, with special attention to the brain-derived neurotrophic factor-tropomyosin receptor kinase B signaling pathway and the ventral tegmental area-nucleus accumbens dopamine circuit. We determined that stress-induced alterations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels are likely related to the nature, severity, and duration of stress, especially in the above-mentioned brain regions of the corticolimbic system. With their unique colony structure, competition between ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) can be particularly intense, with colonies potentially willing to sacrifice large number of individuals to obtain resources or territory under the right circumstances. In this review, we cover circumstances in which ant competition escalates into combat, battle strategies and tactics, and analysis methods for these battles. The trends for when colonies choose to fight can vary greatly dependent on the species and situation, which we review in detail. Because of their large group sizes, ant conflicts can follow different patterns than many other species, with a variety of specialist adaptations and battle strategies, such as specialized worker classes and the need to rapidly recruit large number of compatriots. These same large group sizes also can make ant fighting amenable to mathematical analysis, particularly in the context of Lanchester's laws that consider how total numbers influence the outcome of a confrontation. Yet, dynamic behavior can often disrupt idealized mathematical predictions in real-world scenarios, even though these can still shed light on the explanations for such behavior. We also systematically cover the literature on battles between groups of ants, presenting several other interesting studies on species with unique colony organization, such as army ants and leafcutter ants. Ants are crucial ecosystem engineers, and their ecological success is facilitated by a division of labour among sterile "workers". In some ant lineages, workers have undergone further morphological differentiation, resulting in differences in body size, shape, or both. Distinguishing between changes in size and shape is not trivial. Traditional approaches based on allometry reduce complex 3D shapes into simple linear, areal, or volume metrics; modern approaches using geometric morphometrics typically rely on landmarks, introducing observer bias and a trade‐off between effort and accuracy. Here, we use a landmark‐free method based on large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping (LDDMM) to assess the co‐variation of size and 3D shape in the mandibles and head capsules of Atta vollenweideri leaf‐cutter ants, a species exhibiting extreme worker size‐variation. Body mass varied by more than two orders of magnitude, but a shape atlas created via LDDMM on μ‐CT‐derived 3D mesh files revealed only two distinct head capsule and mandibles shapes—one for the minims (body mass < 1 mg) and one for all other workers. Animal performance fundamentally influences behaviour, ecology, and evolution. It typically varies monotonously with size. A notable exception is maximum running speed; the fastest animals are of intermediate size. Here we show that this peculiar allometry results from the competition between two musculoskeletal constraints: the kinetic energy capacity, which dominates in small animals, and the work capacity, which reigns supreme in large animals. The ratio of both capacities defines the physiological similarity index Γ, a dimensionless number akin to the Reynolds number in fluid mechanics. The scaling of Γ indicates a transition from a dominance of muscle forces to a dominance of inertial forces as animals grow in size; its magnitude defines conditions of “dynamic similarity“ that enable comparison and estimates of locomotor performance across extant and extinct animals; and the physical parameters that define it highlight opportunities for adaptations in musculoskeletal “design” that depart from the eternal null hypothesis of geometric similarity. The physiological similarity index challenges the Froude number as prevailing dynamic similarity condition, reveals that the differential growth of muscle and weight forces central to classic scaling theory is of secondary importance for the majority of terrestrial animals, and suggests avenues for comparative analyses of locomotor systems.How fast can animals run? Objectives: Community Health Workers (CHWs) are important healthcare professionals and key members of team. The purpose of this research is to identify the roles and responsibilities of CHWs in developed and developing countries who provide healthcare assistance to pregnant and lactating women. Methods: For this particular study, a comparison was conducted between CHWs role in seven developed countries, seven South Asian developing countries, and India, with special emphasis on improving maternal health status. Results: CHW programs are essential in communities, institutional health programs, and outreach delivery systems. Without active community involvement, CHWs cannot reach their full potential. Developed countries have frameworks for CHWs, such as the Swasthya Shebika Program, Village Health Worker Cadret, Lady Health Worker Programme, and Accredited Social Health Activist program. CHWs are well-paid in developed nations and work with marginalized groups to spread health messages. However, up to 60% of community health workers in low- and lower-middle-income countries do not receive remuneration. Background. Antihypertensive therapy is crucial for preventing stroke in hypertensive patients. However, the efficacy of antihypertensive therapy varies across individuals, partially due to therapy-related genetic variations among individuals. We investigated the association of antihypertensive drug-related gene polymorphism with stroke in patients with hypertension. Methods. Demographic information, medication, and outcome data were obtained from a hypertensive patient management system, and a PCR fluorescence probe technique was used to detect 7 gene polymorphic loci (CYP2D6 ∗ 10, ADRB1, CYP2C9 ∗ 3, AGTR1, ACE, CYP3A5 ∗ 3, and NPPA), and these loci were compared between patients with and without stroke. Logistic regression was performed to analyze the association of these genetic variations with stroke risk in hypertensive patients while controlling for potential factors. Results. The prevalence of stroke in the hypertensive population in Changsha County of Hunan Province was 2.75%. The mutation frequencies of ADRB1 (1165G > C), CYP2D6 ∗ 10, CYP2C9 ∗ 3, AGTR1 (1166A > C), ACE (I/D), NPPA (2238T > C), and CYP3A5 ∗ 3 were 74.43%, 57.23%, 4.26%, 5.71%, 31.62%, 1.17%, and 69.58%, respectively. Univariate analysis revealed that ADRB1 polymorphism was associated with stroke (χ2 = 8.659, P < 0.05), with a higher stroke risk in the CC group than in the GC and GG groups (GC + GG). Multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis showed that the CC genotype in ADRB1 (vs. the GC + GG genotype) was associated with an increased risk of stroke [odds ratio (OR) = 1.184, P<0.05] in hypertensive patients. No association was observed between CYP2D6 ∗ 10, CYP2C9 ∗ 3, AGTR1 (1166A > C), ACE (I/D), CYP3A5 ∗ 3, and NPPA (2238T > C) polymorphisms and stroke. Conclusions. ADRB1 (1165G > C) gene polymorphism is associated with the risk of stroke in Chinese hypertensive patients. The CC genotype is correlated with a higher risk of stroke than the GC + GG genotype. Bite force is a decisive performance trait in animals because it plays a role for numerous life history components such as food consumption, inter- and intraspecific interactions, and reproductive success. Bite force has been studied across a wide range of vertebrate species, but only for 32 species of insects, the most speciose animal lineage. Here we present the insect bite force database with bite force measurements for 654 insect species covering 476 genera, 111 families, and 13 orders with body lengths ranging from 3.76 to 180.12 mm. In total we recorded 1906 bite force series from 1290 specimens, and, in addition, present basal head, body, and wing metrics. As such, the database will facilitate a wide range of studies on the characteristics, predictors, and macroevolution of bite force in the largest clade of the animal kingdom and may serve as a basis to further our understanding of macroevolutionary processes in relation to bite force across all biting metazoans. Aim: To assist policy-makers in improving access to eye care in under-served areas by analysing the relationship between motivational factors affecting the uptake of task-shifting in eye care and the recruitment and retention of optometrists in remote and rural areas. Background: The World Health Organization recommends two key strategies in tackling preventable blindness in under-served areas: improving human resources for health and task-shifting. The relationship between task-shifting and recruitment and retention of eye care workers in under-served areas is unknown. Ghana and Scotland are two countries from different levels of economic development that have notably expanded the roles of optometrists and struggle with rural recruitment and retention. Methods: Motivation was explored through semi-structured interviews with 19 optometrists in Ghana and Scotland with experience in remote and rural practice. Framework analysis was used to analyse interviews, explore the relationship between task-shifting and recruitment and retention and create recommendations for policy. Findings: The main motivational considerations included altruism, quality of life, learning and career opportunities, fulfilling potential, remuneration, stress of decision-making and collaboration. Motivational and demotivational factors for task-shifting and recruitment/retention shared many similar aspects. Discussion: Recruitment and retention in remote and rural areas require staff be incentivised to take up those positions, motivated to remain and given the adequate resources for personal and professional fulfilment. Task-shifting also requires incentivisation, motivation to continue and the resources to be productive. Many motivational factors influencing recruitment/retention and task-shifting are similar suggesting these two strategies can be compatible and complementary in improving access to eye care, although some factors are culture and context specific. Background: Cognitive functional ability affects the accessibility of IT and is thus something that should be controlled for in user experience (UX) research. However, many cognitive function assessment batteries are long and complex, making them impractical for use in conventional experimental time frames. Therefore, there is a need for a short and reliable cognitive assessment that has discriminant validity for cognitive functions needed for general IT tasks. One potential candidate is the Trail Making Test (TMT). Objective: This study investigated the usefulness of a digital TMT as a cognitive profiling tool in IT-related UX research by assessing its predictive validity on general IT task performance and exploring its discriminant validity according to discrete cognitive functions required to perform the IT task. Methods: A digital TMT (parts A and B) named Axon was administered to 27 healthy participants, followed by administration of 5 IT tasks in the form of CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing tests to Tell Computers and Humans Apart). The discrete cognitive functions required to perform each CAPTCHA were rated by trained evaluators. To further explain and cross-validate our results, the original TMT and 2 psychological assessments of visuomotor and short-term memory function were administered. Results: Axon A and B were administrable in less than 5 minutes, and overall performance was significantly predictive of general IT task performance (F 5,19=6.352; P =.001; Λ=0.374). This result was driven by performance on Axon B (F 5,19=3.382; P =.02; Λ=0.529), particularly for IT tasks involving the combination of executive processing with visual object and pattern recognition. Furthermore, Axon was cross-validated with the original TMT (P corr=.001 and P corr=.017 for A and B, respectively) and visuomotor and short-term memory tasks. Conclusions: The results demonstrate that variance in IT task performance among an age-homogenous neurotypical population can be related to intersubject variance in cognitive function as assessed by Axon. Although Axon's predictive validity seemed stronger for tasks involving the combination of executive function with visual object and pattern recognition, these cognitive functions are arguably relevant to the majority of IT interfaces. Considering its short administration time and remote implementability, the Axon digital TMT demonstrates the potential to be a useful cognitive profiling tool for IT-based UX research. How animals process and absorb nutrients from their food is a fundamental question in biology. Despite the continuity and interaction between intraoral food processing and post-oesophageal nutritional extraction, these topics have largely been studied separately. At present, we lack a synthesis of how pre- and post-oesophageal mechanisms of food processing shape the ability of various taxa to effectively assimilate nutrients from their diet. The aim of this special issue is to catalyse a unification of these distinct approaches as a functional continuum. We highlight questions that derive from this synthesis, as well as technical advances to address these questions. At present, there is also a skew toward vertebrates in studies of feeding form–function mechanics; by including perspectives from researchers working on both vertebrates and invertebrates, we hope to stimulate integrative and comparative research on food processing and nutritional assimilation. Below, we discuss how the papers in this issue contribute to these goals in three areas: championing a functional-comparative approach, quantifying performance and emphasizing the effects of life history, and food substrate and extrinsic factors in current and future studies of oral food processing and nutritional assimilation. Ants are a dominant family of eusocial terrestrial insects with a diversity of ecologies, lifestyles and morphologies. Ant diet preferences range from strict carnivory through omnivory to almost complete herbivory in species feeding on seeds or exudates of plant-sucking insects. While several studies have investigated ant feeding performance on different substrates, comparatively little is known about the functional morphology of the structures involved in food uptake or their diversification across the ants. To take stock of our current knowledge, we give an overview of how adult ants ingest food, followed by a morphological description of the mouthparts, preoral space and cephalic sucking pump. The mandibles are the most prominent mouthparts and have received considerable attention in the literature, so we focus on the maxillae and labium here. We present current hypotheses for the movement patterns of these parts and discuss morphological differences among ants that may be related to their ecological diversity. Finally, we give short comparisons of the ant condition with some other insects and vertebrates, as well as an outlook summarizing gaps in our knowledge. This sets the stage for future studies elucidating the connections between ant feeding mechanisms and mouthpart evolution. Herbivores large and small need to mechanically process plant tissue. Their ability to do so is determined by two forces: the maximum force they can generate, and the minimum force required to fracture the plant tissue. The ratio of these forces determines the relative mechanical effort; how this ratio varies with animal size is challenging to predict. We measured the forces required to cut thin polymer sheets with mandibles from leaf-cutter ant workers which vary by more than one order of magnitude in body mass. Cutting forces were independent of mandible size, but differed by a factor of two between pristine and worn mandibles. Mandibular wear is thus likely a more important determinant of cutting force than mandible size. We rationalize this finding with a biomechanical analysis, which suggests that pristine mandibles are ideally 'sharp'—cutting forces are close to a theoretical minimum, which is independent of tool size and shape, and instead solely depends on the geometric and mechanical properties of the cut tissue. The increase of cutting force due to mandibular wear may be particularly problematic for small ants, which generate lower absolute bite forces, and thus require a larger fraction of their maximum bite force to cut the same plant. Insects use their mandibles for a variety of tasks, including food processing, material transport, nest building, brood care, and fighting. Despite this functional diversity, mandible motion is typically thought to be constrained to rotation about a single fixed axis. Here, we conduct a direct quantitative test of this 'hinge joint hypothesis' in a species that uses its mandibles for a wide range of tasks: Atta vollenweideri leaf-cutter ants. Mandible movements from live restrained ants were reconstructed in three dimensions using a multi-camera rig. Rigid body kinematic analyses revealed strong evidence that mandible movement occupies a kinematic space that requires more than one rotational degree of freedom: at large opening angles, mandible motion is dominated by yaw. But at small opening angles, mandibles both yaw and pitch. The combination of yaw and pitch allows mandibles to 'criss-cross': either mandible can be on top when mandibles are closed. We observed criss-crossing in freely cutting ants, suggesting that it is functionally important. Combined with recent reports on the diversity of joint articulations in other insects, our results show that insect mandible kinematics are more diverse than traditionally assumed, and thus worthy of further detailed investigation. Background: Immune dysregulation is a feature of sepsis. However, a comprehensive analysis of the immune landscapes in septic patients has not been conducted. Objectives: This study aims to explore the abundance ratios of immune cells in sepsis and investigate their clinical value. Methods: Sepsis transcriptome data sets were downloaded from the NCBI GEO database. The immunedeconv R package was employed to analyze the abundance of immune cells in sepsis patients and calculate the ratios of different immune cell types. Differential analysis of immune cell ratios was performed using the t test. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was utilized to find the relationships between immune cell abundance and pathways. The prognostic significance of immune cell ratios for patient survival probability was assessed using the log-rank test. In addition, differential gene expression was performed using the limma package, and gene co-expression analysis was executed using the WGCNA package. Results: We found significant changes in immune cell ratios between sepsis patients and healthy controls. Some of these ratios were associated with 28-day survival. Certain pathways showed significant correlations with immune cell ratios. Notably, six immune cell ratios demonstrated discriminative ability for patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), bacterial sepsis, and viral sepsis, with an Area Under the Curve (AUC) larger than 0.84. Patients with a high eosinophil/B.cell.memory ratio exhibited poor survival outcomes. A total of 774 differential genes were identified in sepsis patients with a high eosinophil/B.cell.memory ratio compared to those with a low ratio. These genes were organized into seven co-expression modules associated with relevant pathways, including interferon signaling, T-cell receptor signaling, and specific granule pathways. Conclusions: Immune cell ratios eosinophil/B.cell.memory and NK.cell.activated/NK.cell.resting in sepsis patients can be utilized for disease subtyping, prognosis, and diagnosis. Simple Summary: Three bark beetle species, Tomicus yunnanensis, T. brevipilosus, and T. minor, are the most economically significant pests of the Yunnan pine in Southwestern China. Chemical and physical communication play key roles in various life activities. In this study, we described the fine structure of the adult mouthparts of these three Tomicus species using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. We identified three types of mandibular shapes, which match with their biomechanical properties, their ability to process food, and their preferred foraging locations on tree trunks. Eleven types of sensilla were discernible, including sensilla basiconica, sensilla twig basiconica, sensilla coeloconica, sensilla chaetica, sensilla trichoidea, and sensilla digitiformia. The function roles of each sensilla type were given based on its distribution and structures, especially on the internal structures such as dendrites and tubular body. Most chemoreceptors occur on the palpal tips. No significant differences among the sexes or species were identified; however, intraspecific variability in the number of sensilla twig basiconica 3 and sensilla digitiformia sensilla was evident. These findings will aid future studies of the feeding niches and reproductive behaviors of Tomicus beetles. Deep learning-based computer vision methods are transforming animal behavioural research. Transfer learning has enabled work in non-model species, but still requires hand-annotation of example footage, and is only performant in well-defined conditions. To help overcome these limitations, we developed replicAnt, a configurable pipeline implemented in Unreal Engine 5 and Python, designed to generate large and variable training datasets on consumer-grade hardware. replicAnt places 3D animal models into complex, procedurally generated environments, from which automatically annotated images can be exported. We demonstrate that synthetic data generated with replicAnt can significantly reduce the hand-annotation required to achieve benchmark performance in common applications such as animal detection, tracking, pose-estimation, and semantic segmentation. We also show that it increases the subject-specificity and domain-invariance of the trained networks, thereby conferring robustness. In some applications, replicAnt may even remove the need for hand-annotation altogether. It thus represents a significant step towards porting deep learning-based computer vision tools to the field. The recent global pandemic had shocking impacts on societies and economies worldwide by bringing complexity, ambiguity, and uncertainty for extended periods. UX researchers, faced with numerous challenges, were compelled to adapt to emergent conditions through remote research methods. Investigating how some members of the UX research community adapted to the emergency offers valuable insights into how they responded to uncertainty and showed resilience. Therefore, we studied the early practices of UX managers and researchers in Turkey during the first 6 months of the global pandemic under lockdown conditions. Our goal was to understand how UX research and design teams responded to uncertainty by customizing their methods. We focused on seven firms as different cases to conduct semi-structured interviews with seven managers and 13 UX researchers. The results demonstrate that the adaptable nature of UX research allowed them to quickly respond to these emerging conditions. In the early period of the pandemic, our study participants— UX managers, designers, and researchers—experienced the advantages and challenges of remote UX research necessitated by the lockdown. These included issues related to participant recruitment, work performance, readiness, and methodological concerns. Under the conditions of conservation tillage, the existence of the root–soil complex greatly increases the resistance and energy consumption of stubble-cutting blades, especially in Northeast China. In this research, the corn root–soil complex in Northeast China was selected as the research object. Based on the multi-toothed structure of the leaf-cutting ant's mandibles and the unique bite mode of its mandibles on leaves, a gear-tooth, double-disk, bionic stubble-cutting device (BSCD) was developed by using a combination of power cutting and passive cutting. The effects of rotary speed, tillage depth, and forward speed on the torque and power of the BSCD were analyzed using orthogonal tests, and the results showed that all of the factors had a large influence on the torque and power, in the order of tillage depth > rotary speed > forward speed. The performance of the BSCD and the traditional power straight blade (TPSB) was explored using comparative tests. It was found that the optimal stubble-cutting rate of the BSCD was 97.4%. Compared with the TPSB, the torque of the BSCD was reduced by 15.2–16.4%, and the power was reduced by 9.2–11.3%. Introduction: In Ethiopia, country-wide community-based primary health programs have been in effect for about two decades. Despite the program's significant contribution to advancing Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), Ethiopia's maternal and child mortality is still one of the highest in the world. The aim of this manuscript is to critically examine the multifaceted fragmentation challenges of Ethiopia's Community Health Workers (CHWs) program to deliver optimum MNCH and build a resilient community health system. Methods: We conducted a qualitative case study in West Shewa Zone, rural Ethiopia. A purposive sampling technique was used to recruit participants. Data sources were two focus group discussions with sixteen CHWs, twelve key informant interviews with multilevel public health policy actors, and a policy document review related to the CHW program to triangulate the findings. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data was conducted. The World Health Organization's health systems framework and socio-ecological model guided the data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Results: The CHWs program has been an extended arm of Ethiopia's primary health system and has contributed to improved health outcomes. However, the program has been facing unique systemic challenges that stem from the fragmentation of health finance; medical and equipment supply; working and living infrastructures; CHWs empowerment and motivation, monitoring, supervision, and information; coordination and governance; and community and stakeholder engagement. The ongoing COVID-19 and volatile political and security issues are exacerbating these fragmentation challenges. Conclusion: This study emphasized the gap between the macro (national) level policy and the challenge during implementation at the micro (district)level. Fragmentation is a blind spot for the community-based health system in rural Ethiopia. We argue that the fragmentation challenges of the community health program are exacerbating the fragility of the health system and fragmentation of MNCH health outcomes. This is a threat to sustain the MNCH outcome gains, the realization of national health goals, and the resilience of the primary health system in rural Ethiopia. We recommend that beyond the current business-as-usual approach, it is important to emphasize an evidence-based and systemic fragmentation monitoring and responsive approach and to better understand the complexity of the community-based health system fragmentation challenges to sustain and achieve better health outcomes. The challenges can be addressed through the adoption of transformative and innovative approaches including capitalizing on multi-stakeholder engagement and health in all policies in the framework of co-production. Mitochondria are the primary source of energy production and are implicated in a wide range of biological processes in most eukaryotic cells. Skeletal muscle heavily relies on mitochondria for energy supplements. In addition to being a powerhouse, mitochondria evoke many functions in skeletal muscle, including regulating calcium and reactive oxygen species levels. A healthy mitochondria population is necessary for the preservation of skeletal muscle homeostasis, while mitochondria dysregulation is linked to numerous myopathies. In this review, we summarize the recent studies on mitochondria function and quality control in skeletal muscle, focusing mainly on in vivo studies of rodents and human subjects. With an emphasis on the interplay between mitochondrial functions concerning the muscle fiber type-specific phenotypes, we also discuss the effect of aging and exercise on the remodeling of skeletal muscle and mitochondria properties. Many social insects display age polyethism: young workers stay inside the nest, and only older workers forage. This behavioural transition is accompanied by genetic and physiological changes, but the mechanistic origin of it remains unclear. To investigate if the mechanical demands on the musculoskeletal system effectively prevent young workers from foraging, we studied the biomechanical development of the bite apparatus in Atta vollenweideri leaf-cutter ants. Fully matured foragers generated peak in vivo bite forces of around 100 mN, more than one order of magnitude in excess of those measured for freshly eclosed callows of the same size. This change in bite force was accompanied by a sixfold increase in the volume of the mandible closer muscle, and by a substantial increase of the flexural rigidity of the head capsule, driven by a significant increase in both average thickness and indentation modulus of the head capsule cuticle. Consequently, callows lack the muscle force capacity required for leaf-cutting, and their head capsule is so compliant that large muscle forces would be likely to cause damaging deformations. On the basis of these results, we speculate that continued biomechanical development post eclosion may be a key factor underlying age polyethism, wherever foraging is associated with substantial mechanical demands. A main challenge in the analysis of division of labor in insect societies characterized by worker polymorphism has been identifying the number of physical castes and determining their relationship to task performance. We addressed this question using the extremely polymorphic leafcutter ant Atta cephalotes as a model by measuring 22 morphological characters and applying multivariate Gaussian mixture modeling to define worker size-class boundaries. Our statistical approach discriminated five physical worker size classes (subcastes) and found continuous variation in most morphological characters. Some worker size classes showed patterns of covariance, modularity, and integration in head, mandible, and leg traits, suggesting biomechanical functionality in tasks such as leaf cutting. Task repertoires and act frequencies were recorded to identify how fungal gardening, brood care, leaf-harvesting, and other tasks were distributed across worker size groups. Results showed that small and mid-sized media workers performed more diverse and complex tasks, including leaf harvesting, than workers of other size classes. Minims participated in fungal-gardening and nursing tasks, whereas large medias mainly participated in leafcutting and majors made few direct contributions to fungal cultivation. Results of our integrative analyses demonstrate the existence of an unexpectedly large number of worker size classes that can differ significantly in performance of agricultural tasks. However, overlap in task repertoires of workers at size-class boundaries suggests that not all morphologically distinct groups display discrete behavioral profiles. Morphological groups are instead distinguished by a combination of the tasks that each performs and their relative frequencies. Significance statement: The evolutionary coupling of behavior and morphology is central to understanding division of labor in insect societies. Our work applies robust statistical modelling to offer a novel analysis of worker physical caste categorization based on extensive morphometric sampling. Our method improves upon previous approaches by incorporating measurements of a large number of diverse morphological traits likely involved in task performance to examine worker physical caste evolution. We integrate morphological evolution with behavioral data on relative task performance rates and task repertoire size to describe the morphological and behavioral space of size-variable workers. Our approach provides methods to quantitatively analyze division of labor and behavioral performance, and offers new insights into worker trait modularity and integration and task performance associated with the organization of complex insect societies. Food processing can exert significant evolutionary pressures on the morphological evolution of animal appendages. The ant genus Pheidole displays a remarkable degree of morphological differentiation and task specialization among its workers. Notably, there is considerable variation in head shape within worker subcastes of Pheidole, which could affect the stress patterns generated by bite‐related muscle contraction. In this study, we use finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the effect of the variation in head plane shape in stress patterns, while exploring the morphospace of Pheidole worker head shapes. We hypothesize that the plane head shapes of majors are optimized for dealing with stronger bites. Furthermore, we expect that plane head shapes at the edges of each morphospace would exhibit mechanical limitations that prevent further expansion of the occupied morphospace. We vectorized five head shapes for each Pheidole worker type located at the center and edges of the corresponding morphospaces. We conducted linear static FEA to analyze the stresses generated by mandibular closing muscle contraction. Our findings indicate that plane head shapes of majors exhibit signs of optimization to deal with stronger bites. Stresses are distinctly directed along the lateral margins of the head, following the direction of muscle contraction, whereas the stresses on the plane head shapes of minors tend to concentrate around the mandibular articulations. However, the comparatively higher stress levels observed on majors' plane head shapes suggest a demand for cuticular reinforcement, like increased cuticle thickness or sculpturing pattern. Our results align with the expectations regarding the main colony tasks performed by each worker subcaste, and we find evidence of biomechanical limitations on extreme plane head shapes for majors and minors. Background: Increasing level of physical activity (PA) among working population is of particular importance, because of the high return of investment on employees' PA. This study was aimed to investigate socioeconomic inequalities in Health-Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) among employees of a Medical Sciences University in Iran. Methods: Data were extracted from the SHAHWAR Cohort study in Iran. Concentration index (C) and Wagstaff decomposition techniques were applied to determine socioeconomic inequality in the study outcomes and its contributors, respectively. Results: Nearly half of the university employees (44.6%) had poor HEPA, and employees with high socioeconomic status (SES) suffered more from it (C = 0.109; 95% CI: 0.075, 0.143). Also, we found while poor work-related PA (C = 0.175; 95% CI: 0.142, 0.209) and poor transport-related PA (C = 0.081, 95% CI: 0.047, 0.115) were more concentrated among high-SES employees, low-SES employees more affected by the poor PA at leisure time (C = -0.180; 95% CI: -0.213, -0.146). Shift working, and having higher SES and subjective social status were the main factors that positively contributed to the measured inequality in employees' poor HEPA by 33%, 31.7%, and 29%, respectively, whereas, having a married life had a negative contribution of -39.1%. The measured inequality in poor leisure-time PA was mainly attributable to SES, having a married life, urban residency, and female gender by 58.1%, 32.5%, 28.5%, and -32.6%, respectively. SES, urban residency, shift working, and female gender, with the contributions of 42%, 33.5%, 21.6%, and -17.3%, respectively, were the main contributors of poor work-related PA inequality. Urban residency, having a married life, SES, and subjective social status mainly contributed to the inequality of poor transport-related PA by 82.9%, -58.7%, 36.3%, and 33.5%, respectively, followed by using a personal car (12.3%) and female gender (11.3%). Conclusions: To reduce the measured inequalities in employees' PA, workplace health promotion programs should aim to educate and support male, urban resident, high-SES, high-social-class, and non-shift work employees to increase their PA at workplace, and female, married, rural resident, and low-SES employees to increase their leisure-time PA. Background: In Iran, community health workers (CHWs) are selected and employed according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health (MOH). The present study aimed to investigate the views of different stakeholders regarding the selection criteria, as well as the competency of CHWs. Methods: This study was conducted using a qualitative thematic analysis in Golestan Province, Iran. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with managers, supervisors, CHWs, and common people in 2021. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed. To extract key themes, the six-step Brown model was used, which involved becoming acquainted with the data, meaningful organization of transcripts, extracting primary open codes, searching for themes in an iterative approach, theme extraction, defining themes, and preparing a report. The relationships between codes and sub-themes and themes were represented using ATLAS.ti version 8. Results: Data saturation was achieved after interviewing 22 people. The extracted data included 340 open codes, two main sub-themes of "CHW effectiveness" and "CHW sustainability", and three main themes of "criteria for employing competent people", "barriers to employing competent people", and "identifying the barriers to employing competent people", according to the MOH instructions. Conclusion: In the present study, local hiring was one of the major challenges in the competency-based selection of CHWs. One of the most repeated codes was expanding the local hiring concept and its requirements. Since different regions of Iran have different climatic, economic, cultural, and social conditions, the selection and hiring criteria for CHWs should be tailored to the needs of the community. Pharmacotherapy for neuropsychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and depression, has been characterized by significant inter-individual variability in drug response and the development of side effects. Pharmacogenetics, as a key part of personalized medicine, aims to optimize therapy according to a patient's individual genetic signature by targeting genetic variations involved in pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic processes. Pharmacokinetic variability refers to variations in a drug's absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination, whereas pharmacodynamic variability results from variable interactions of an active drug with its target molecules. Pharmacogenetic research on depression and anxiety has focused on genetic polymorphisms affecting metabolizing cytochrome P450 (CYP) and uridine 5'-diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes, P-glycoprotein ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, and monoamine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolic enzymes, transporters, and receptors. Recent pharmacogenetic studies have revealed that more efficient and safer treatments with antidepressants and anxiolytics could be achieved through genotype-guided decisions. However, because pharmacogenetics cannot explain all observed heritable variations in drug response, an emerging field of pharmacoepigenetics investigates how epigenetic mechanisms, which modify gene expression without altering the genetic code, might influence individual responses to drugs. By understanding the epi(genetic) variability of a patient's response to pharmacotherapy, clinicians could select more effective drugs while minimizing the likelihood of adverse reactions and therefore improve the quality of treatment. The present work introduces a new low-cost prototype® designed for photogrammetric surveys of small objects, using a single photographic shot. The prototype® utilizes the different perspectives of the object presented by a series of mirrors strategically placed in the camera sensor. The set of specular reflections projected on our camera sensor simulates the same effect as taking pictures from equivalent points of each mirror.The v1 prototype® was presented at the 7th International Workshop "Low-Cost 3D Sensors, Algorithms, Applications" in Würzburg on December 15–16, 2022. It consists of a set of eighteen common mirrors conveniently placed around the object to be digitized, making its reflections converge towards the camera lens. The v2 prototype® presented here is an evolution of the previous one, which replaces the common mirrors with precision ones that have a metallic reflective surface on the front. This modification eliminates the double image formed by the reflective layer and the protective glass.These prototypes® allow for faster surveys of small inert objects (such as small cultural heritage artefacts like sculptures, engravings, rings, coins, etc.) as well as photogrammetric surveys of small living beings, such as insects, which cannot remain still during traditional photography. BACKGROUND: A health house (HH) is a basic health facility in rural Iraq. The function of a HH is to provide simple health services and treatments such as giving injections, dressing simple wounds, and monitoring mother and child health. The duties also include dispensing medications, measuring blood pressure, and the daily monitoring of chlorine levels in water. These HHs also provide awareness on different subjects. The main objectives of this study are to assess the availability of the basic features of the HHs and core components of the framework of the World Health Organization (WHO) building blocks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multistage sampling technique was used to select 50 HHs out of 497 in Iraq. A questionnaire comprising closed-ended questions was developed to be completed using the researcher's observations and interviews with the healthcare workers in the HHs. The questionnaire covered the basic features of HHs as recommended by the Iraq Ministry of Health (MOH) and the six WHO health system building blocks. RESULTS: Fifty HHs were enrolled in the study. The availability score of basic features was 43.6% and the general service score was 55.1%. The service-specific score was 23.3%, the health workforce score was 29.6%, and the health information system score was 79.5%. The availability of essential medicines score was 21.2%, the health financing system score was 0.0%, and the leadership and governance score was 66.7%. CONCLUSION: The HHs need to follow the standard criteria determined by the Iraq MOH to ensure the proper functioning of the health outlets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Community health workers (CHWs) play an important role in improving access to health services to a broader population; particularly to communities living in remote areas. However, the productivity of CHWs is affected by the workload they have. We aimed to summarize and present CHWs' perceived workload in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: We searched three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Embase). A search strategy customized for the three electronic databases was developed using the two key terms of the review (CHWs and workload). Primary studies conducted in LMICs that explicitly measured workload of CHWs and published in English were included, without date restrictions. Methodological quality of the articles was assessed by two reviewers independently using mixed-methods appraisal tool. We applied a convergent integrated approach to synthesize the data. This study is registered on PROSPERO, number CRD42021291133. Results: Of 632 unique records, 44 met our inclusion criteria, and 43 (20 qualitative, 13 mixed-methods, and 10 quantitative studies) passed the methodological quality assessment and were included in this review. In 97.7% (n = 42) of the articles, CHWs reported that they have a high workload. Having multiple tasks was the most commonly reported subcomponent of workload, followed by lack of transport; which was reported in 77.6% (n = 33) and 25.6% (n = 11) of the articles respectively. Conclusion: CHWs in LMICs reported that they have a high workload; mainly related to having to manage multiple tasks and the lack of transport to access households. Program managers need to make careful consideration when additional tasks are shifted to CHWs and the practicability to be performed in the environment they work in. NeuroIS—the methods and knowledge of neuroscience applied to the information systems (IS) domain—has become an established research field within the IS discipline. A key advantage of NeuroIS is its ability to provide insights into human cognition beyond those obtained using behavioural techniques alone. Nevertheless, in neuroscience, there is renewed interest in examining behaviour together with neurophysiological methods to better inform our understanding of neural processes. In this research opinion article, we argue that in the field of NeuroIS, there is an opportunity for hybrid programs of study that combine neurophysiological and behavioural methods in a complementary manner. We outline four strategies for designing complementary neurophysiological and behavioural experiments in a research program: (1) observe the relationship between neural processes and behavioural change; (2) combine neurophysiological and behavioural methods to enhance internal, external, and ecological validity; (3) extend, rather than replicate, experiments based on theory; and (4) use neurophysiological and behavioural experiments together to evaluate IT artefact design. By applying these strategies, researchers can more effectively design programs using complementary neurophysiological and behavioural methods, which, in turn, can help to provide richer insights into the phenomena under study as well as accelerate the advancement of IS knowledge. Aim: This study aimed to explore the current challenges of Iran's Iranian Primary Health Care (PHC) network and possible ways forward. Background: PHC network was established in 1985. It remains a core instrument of health care delivery. However, it faces several challenges that can threaten its effective functioning. Methods: We conducted face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 26 key stakeholders. We used the deductive content analysis approach. World Health Organization's health system framework guided our analyses. Data were analysed using MAXQDA software. To enhance data triangulation, we reviewed PHC national related plans, bylaws, and national and international published reports. Findings: PHC network experiences financial challenges and fails to respond fully to the emerging population's needs due to unfair distribution of resources and a lack of community health workers for PHC and a sustainable financing model for PHC. Furthermore, the insurance package is not well integrated into the PHC network system. Policy interests and resource commitments for innovative, preventive, and health promotion initiatives are lacking. Innovative, preventive, and health promotion initiatives should become the highest priority for policymakers. Well-trained community health professionals, active community participation, private sector engagements and active involvement of non-government organisations are fundamental for a well-functioning PHC network in Iran, especially to foster the delivery of evidence-based initiatives. Context: Iranian community health workers (known as behvarzes) have played an undeniable role in improving the health status of the rural community in recent decades. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the performance challenges faced by behvarzes using a literature review. Methods: This systematic review searched the Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, Springer, PubMed, ProQuest, SID, and Magiran databases/search engines in January 2020. There were 2 inclusion criteria, namely articles published in English or Persian languages and those published in or after 2000. The search strategy resulted in the retrieval of 1,472 primary articles, 16 of which were finally included in the study, and their related contents were entered into extraction tables. Then, the identified challenges were categorized based on the context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model. Results: The study results recognized the major challenges in 5 dimensions, including context (i.e., changes in societal, cultural, demographical, and epidemiological characteristics of rural communities), input (i.e., inadequate number of behvarzes, their insufficient competencies, and limited resources), process (i.e., increase in healthcare process complexity and the number of bahvarzes' tasks and managerial problems), output (i.e., decrease in the quality, efficiency, accessibility, continuity, utilization, and effectiveness of services provided by behvarzes, poor health literacy of rural population and their weak involvement in health affairs, and emerging mental health problems in behvarzes), and outcome (i.e., low equity, urban-rural disparity in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and dissatisfaction of behvarzes and caregivers). Aims Observational studies indicate U-shaped associations of blood pressure (BP) and incident dementia in older age, but randomized controlled trials of BP-lowering treatment show mixed results on this outcome in hypertensive patients. A pooled individual participant data analysis of five seminal randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials was undertaken to better define the effects of BP-lowering treatment for the prevention of dementia. Methods and results Multilevel logistic regression was used to evaluate the treatment effect on incident dementia. Effect modification was assessed for key population characteristics including age, baseline systolic BP, sex, and presence of prior stroke. Mediation analysis was used to quantify the contribution of trial medication and changes in systolic and diastolic BP on risk of dementia. The total sample included 28 008 individuals recruited from 20 countries. After a median follow-up of 4.3 years, there were 861 cases of incident dementia. Multilevel logistic regression reported an adjusted odds ratio 0.87 (95% confidence interval: 0.75, 0.99) in favour of antihypertensive treatment reducing risk of incident dementia with a mean BP lowering of 10/4 mmHg. Further multinomial regression taking account of death as a competing risk found similar results. There was no effect modification by age or sex. Mediation analysis confirmed the greater fall in BP in the actively treated group was associated with a greater reduction in dementia risk. Conclusion The first single-stage individual patient data meta-analysis from randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trials provides evidence to support benefits of antihypertensive treatment in late-mid and later life to lower the risk of dementia. Questions remain as to the potential for additional BP lowering in those with already well-controlled hypertension and of antihypertensive treatment commenced earlier in the life-course to reduce the long-term risk of dementia. Image stacking is a crucial method for micro or macro photography. It captures images at different focal planes and then merges them into a single, all-in-focus image with extended focus. This method has been extensively used for digital documentation by scientists working at museums or research institutions. However, the traditional image stacking method relies on expensive instruments to conduct precise image stacking using a computer-based stepper motor controller. In this study, we reported how to conduct image focus extensions with comparable quality to those done by a motorized stepper using a cost-effective instrument setting and an efficient manual stacking method. This method provides a shorter operation time and capability to capture images of living objects and high flexibility in obtaining the images of objects from cm to mm scale. However, it also has some limitations, including the inability to control aperture and exposure time, relatively short working distance at high magnification, requires additional steps to convert the video into images, and heavily relies on the user's manual observation prior to a video recording. Nevertheless, the authors believe that the current method can be applied as an alternative method to conduct image stacking. Muscle fatigue can reduce performance potentially affecting an organism's fitness. However, some aspects of fatigue could be overcome by employing a latch-mediated spring actuated (LaMSA) system where muscle activity is decoupled from movement. We estimated the effects of muscle fatigue on different aspects of mandible performance in six species of ants, two whose mandibles are directly actuated by muscles and four that have LaMSA "trap-jaw" mandibles. We found evidence that the LaMSA system of trap-jaw ants may prevent some aspects of performance from declining with repeated use, including duration, acceleration, and peak velocity. However, inter-strike interval increased with repeated strikes suggesting that muscle fatigue still comes into play during the spring loading phase. In contrast, one species with directly actuated mandibles showed a decline in bite force over time. These results have implications for design principles aimed at minimizing the effects of fatigue on performance in spring and motor actuated systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
