Abstract

CUPID is a next-generation bolometric experiment aiming at searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay with ∼250 kg of isotopic mass of 100Mo. It will operate at ∼10 mK in a cryostat currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating bolometers consisting of 100Mo-enriched Li2MoO4 crystals, facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed, we have measured 70-90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained high energy resolutions at the 356 keV line from a 133Ba source, as good as Ge semiconductor γ detectors in this energy range.

Abstract

An array of twelve 0.28 kg lithium molybdate (LMO) low-temperature bolometers equipped with 16 bolometric Ge light detectors, aiming at optimization of detector structure for CROSS and CUPID double-beta decay experiments, was constructed and tested in a low-background pulse-tube-based cryostat at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. Performance of the scintillating bolometers was studied depending on the size of phonon NTD-Ge sensors glued to both LMO and Ge absorbers, shape of the Ge light detectors (circular vs. square, from two suppliers), in different light collection conditions (with and without reflector, with aluminum coated LMO crystal surface). The scintillating bolometer array was operated over 8 months in the low-background conditions that allowed to probe a very low, μBq/kg, level of the LMO crystals radioactive contamination by 228Th and 226Ra.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most sensitive experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) in 130Te. CUORE uses a cryogenic array of 988 TeO2 calorimeters operated at ∼10 mK with a total mass of 741 kg. To further increase the sensitivity, the detector response must be well understood. Here, we present a non-linear thermal model for the CUORE experiment on a detector-by-detector basis. We have examined both equilibrium and dynamic electro-thermal models of detectors by numerically fitting non-linear differential equations to the detector data of a subset of CUORE channels which are well characterized and representative of all channels. We demonstrate that the hot-electron effect and electric-field dependence of resistance in NTD-Ge thermistors alone are inadequate to describe our detectors' energy-dependent pulse shapes. We introduce an empirical second-order correction factor in the exponential temperature dependence of the thermistor, which produces excellent agreement with energy-dependent pulse shape data up to 6 MeV. We also present a noise analysis using the fitted thermal parameters and show that the intrinsic thermal noise is negligible compared to the observed noise for our detectors.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrino-less double-beta (0νββ) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its second result of the search for 0νββ corresponding to a TeO2 exposure of 372.5 kgyr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a 130Te 0νββ decay half-life of 1.7 1025 yr. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a 90% C.I. Bayesian lower limit of 3.2 1025 yr on the 130Te 0νββ decay half-life. We present the current status of CUORE's search for 0νββ. We give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the 130Te two neutrino double-beta (2νββ) decay half-life. Eventually, we show the preliminary results on half-life limits from the analysis of 130Te 0νββ and 2νββ decay to the first 0+ excited state of 130Xe.

Abstract

A scintillating bolometer based on a large cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$crystal (45 mm side) and a Ge wafer (scintillation detector) has been operatedin the CROSS cryogenic facility at the Canfranc underground laboratory inSpain. The dual-readout detector is a prototype of the technology that will beused in the next-generation $0\nu2\beta$ experiment CUPID. The measurementswere performed at 18 and 12 mK temperature in a pulse tube dilutionrefrigerator. This setup utilizes the same technology as the CUORE cryostatthat will host CUPID and so represents an accurate estimation of the expectedperformance. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer shows a high energyresolution of 6 keV FWHM at the 2615 keV $\gamma$ line. The detection ofscintillation light for each event triggered by the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$bolometer allowed for a full separation ($\sim$8$\sigma$) between$\gamma$($\beta$) and $\alpha$ events above 2 MeV. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$crystal also shows a high internal radiopurity with $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Raactivities of less than 3 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively. Taking also intoaccount the advantage of a more compact and massive detector array, which canbe made of cubic-shaped crystals (compared to the cylindrical ones), this testdemonstrates the great potential of cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillatingbolometers for high-sensitivity searches for the $^{100}$Mo $0\nu2\beta$ decayin CROSS and CUPID projects.

Abstract

As noble liquid time projection chambers grow in size their high voltage requirements increase, and detailed, reproducible studies of dielectric breakdown and the onset of electroluminescence are needed to inform their design. The Xenon Breakdown Apparatus (XeBrA) is a 5-liter cryogenic chamber built to characterize the DC high voltage breakdown behavior of liquid xenon and liquid argon. Electrodes with areas up to 33 cm2 were tested while varying the cathode-anode separation from 1 to 6 mm with a voltage difference up to 75 kV. A power-law relationship between breakdown field and electrode area was observed. The breakdown behavior of liquid argon and liquid xenon within the same experimental apparatus was comparable.

Abstract

Athena (advanced telescope for high-energy astrophysics) is an ESA large-class mission, at present under a re-definition “design-to-cost” phase, planned for a prospective launch at L1 orbit in the second half of the 2030s. It will be an observatory alternatively focusing on two complementary instruments: the X-IFU (X-ray Integral Field Unit), a TES (TransitionEdge Sensor)-based kilo-pixel array which is able to perform simultaneous high-grade energy spectroscopy (~3 eV@7 keV) and imaging over 4′ FoV (field of view), and the WFI (Wide Field Imager), which has good energy spectral resolution (~170 eV@7 keV) and imaging on wide 40′ × 40′ FoV. Athena will be a truly transformational observatory, operating in conjunction with other large observatories across the electromagnetic spectrum available in the 2030s like ALMA, ELT, JWST, SKA, CTA, etc., and in multi-messenger synergies with facilities like LIGO A+, Advanced Virgo+, LISA, IceCube and KM3NeT. The Italian team is involved in both instruments. It has the co-PIship of the cryogenic instrument for which it has to deliver the TES-based Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector (CryoAC) necessary to guarantee the X-IFU sensitivity, degraded by a primary particle background of both solar and galactic cosmic ray (GCR) origins, and by secondary electrons produced by primaries interacting with the materials surrounding the main detector. The outcome of Geant4 studies shows the necessity for adopting both active and passive techniques to guarantee the residual particle background at 5 × 10−3 cts cm−2 s−1 keV−1 level in 2–10 keV scientific bandwidth. Abstract

We report the demonstration of a low-power pixelated readout system designed for three-dimensional ionization charge detection and digital readout of liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) . Unambiguous 3D charge readout was achieved using a custom-designed system-on-a-chip ASIC (LArPix) to uniquely instrument each pad in a pixelated array of charge-collection pads. The LArPix ASIC, manufactured in 180 nm bulk CMOS, provides 32 channels of charge-sensitive amplification with self-triggered digitization and multiplexed readout at temperatures from 80 K to 300 K . Abstract

We present a measurement of the extraction efficiency of quasi-free electrons from the liquid into the gas phase in a two-phase xenon time-projection chamber. The measurements span a range of electric fields from 2.4 to 7.1 kV/cm in the liquid xenon, corresponding to 4.5 to 13.1 kV/cm in the gaseous xenon. Extraction efficiency continues to increase at the highest extraction fields, implying that additional charge signal may be attained in two-phase xenon detectors through careful high-voltage engineering of the gate-anode region.

Abstract

We calibrate a two-phase xenon detector at 0.27 keV in the charge channel and at 2.8 keV in both the light and charge channels using a 37Ar source that is directly released into the detector. We map the light and charge yields as a function of electric drift field. For the 2.8 keV peak, we calculate the Thomas-Imel box parameter for recombination and determine its dependence on drift field. For the same peak, we achieve an energy resolution, Eσ/Emean, between 9.8% and 10.8% for 0.1 kV/cm to 2 kV/cm electric drift fields.

Abstract

CUORE is a cryogenic detector that will be operated at LNGS to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0ββ) of 130Te. The detector installation was completed in summer 2016. Before the installation, several cold runs were done to test the cryogenic system performance. In the last cold run the base temperature of 6.3mK was reached in stable condition. CUORE-0, a CUORE prototype, has proven the feasibility of CUORE, demonstrating that the target background of 0.01 counts/keV/kg/y and the energy resolution of 5 keV are within reach.

Abstract

Temperature sensors fabricated from ultra-low radioactivity materials have been developed for low-background experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay and the interactions of WIMP dark matter. The sensors consist of electrical traces photolithographically-patterned onto substrates of vapor-deposited parylene. They are demonstrated to function as expected, to do so reliably and robustly, and to be highly radio-pure. This work is a proof-of-concept study of a technology that can be applied to broad class of electronic circuits used in low-background experiments.

Abstract

Integrated quasi-optical cryogenic terahertz receivers contain arrays of detectors, quasi-optical filters, interferometers, and other metamaterials. Matrices of quasi-optical band-pass, low-pass, and high-pass filters, Fabry–Perot grid interferometers, and arrays of half-wave and electrically small antennas with superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) sub-terahertz wavelength range detectors were fabricated and experimentally studied on the same computational, technological, and experimental platform. For the design of the filters, we used the periodic frequency-selective surfaces (FSS) approach, contrary to detector arrays that can be presented in a model of distributed absorbers. The structures were fabricated using direct electron beam lithography, thermal shadow evaporation, lift-off, alternatively magnetron sputtering, and chemical and plasma etching. The numerical simulation methods of such structures are sufficiently different: for the reactive matrices with low losses, the approximation of an infinite structure with periodic boundary conditions is applicable, and for the arrays of detectors with dissipative elements of absorbers, a complete analysis of the finite structure with hundreds of interacting ports is applicable. The difference is determined by the presence of dissipation in the detector arrays, the phase of the reflected or re-emitted signal turned out to be undefined and the Floquet periodic boundary conditions are correct only for a phased array antenna. The spectral characteristics of the created filters, interferometers, and antenna arrays were measured in the frequency range 50–600 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Liquid Argon (LAr) is one of the most widely used scintillators in particle detection, due to its low cost, high availability and excellent scintillation properties. A large number of experiments in the neutrino sector are based around using LAr in one or more Time Projection Chambers (TPCs), leading to high resolution three-dimensional particle reconstruction. In this paper, we review and summarise a number of these Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) experiments, and briefly describe the specific technologies that they currently employ. This includes single phase LAr experiments (ICARUS T600, MicroBooNE, SBND, LArIAT, DUNE-SP, ProtoDUNE-SP, ArgonCube and Vertical Drift) and dual phase LAr experiments (DUNE-DP, WA105, ProtoDUNE-DP and ARIADNE). 22. Development of an adiabatic demagnetisation refrigerator for use in space

Abstract

Cryogenic detectors under development by many groups worldwide for the UV, optical, near-infrared, and submillimetre wavelength bands will require cooling to temperatures in the 10 to 100mK range. If such detectors are to be used on future astronomical satellite missions a space qualified millikelvin refrigerator will be required. Of the techniques used to produce such temperatures on the ground, adiabatic demagnetisation refrigeration (ADR) is the most promising for adaptation to use in space. ADRs utilise the magnetocaloric effect, the reduction in temperature observed when an external magnetic field is applied isothermally to a paramagnetic material, and then removed adiabatically. This thesis describes the early stages in the development of a space-qualified ADR. In order to meet the strict requirements on mass, power consumption, and size imposed by a satellite platform, a highly optimised ADR will be required. A laboratory ADR was used to investigate various aspects of ADR design, concentrating on the salt pill, the component that contains the paramagnetic material. The areas investigated included new paramagnetic materials, salt pill support structures, salt pill thermal design, and temperature regulation. A dynamic thermal model of ADR operation was developed in order to understand fully the behaviour of the system during all the evaluation tests. Two new ADR systems were designed, and the performance of each was predicted using the thermal model. The first, the micro ADR, was developed as a test bed for miniaturised, low magnetic field ADR design as part of a collaboration with Oxford Instruments, and also served as an extra cooling stage for their commercial Heliox He3 refrigerator. The second, known as the double ADR, was a multi-stage device developed as a prototype for a future space-based, cryogen-free ADR. Details of the design and predicted performance of each system are presented.

Abstract

We present limits on the spin-independent interaction cross section of dark matter particles with silicon nuclei, derived from data taken with a cryogenic calorimeter with 0.35 g target mass operated in the CRESST-III experiment. A baseline nuclear recoil energy resolution of (1.36 ± 0.05) eVnr, currently the lowest reported for macroscopic particle detectors, and a corresponding energy thresh-old of (10.0 ± 0.2) eVnr have been achieved, improving the sensitivity to light dark matter particles with masses below 160 MeV/c2 by a factor of up to 20 compared to previous results. We characterize the observed low energy excess, and we exclude noise triggers and radioactive contaminations on the crystal surfaces as dominant contributions.

Abstract

International audience; Energy dispersive photon spectrometry is a common analysis technique to quantify radionuclides present in a sample, the analysis is based on the knowledge of the photon emission intensities specific to each radionuclide. Among them, actinides have in general intense emission of L X-rays during the decay. However, their emission intensities are not well known and not detailed in the nuclear and atomic data tables due to the complexity of their spectra that cannot be resolved by conventional semiconductor spectrometers. Using a dedicated high energy resolution cryogenic detector, based on metallic magnetic calorimeter sensor technology, the L X-ray spectra of the decays of 238Pu(α) → 234U, 244Cm(α) → 240Pu, 237Np(α) → 233Pa and 233Pa(β−) → 233U were measured with an energy resolution between 23 eV and 43 eV (full width at half maximum) given access to an unprecedented level of detail. Moreover, the detector was conceived to provide a quasi-constant efficiency in the energy range of the L X-rays, minimizing the uncertainty for relative L X-ray emission intensities. Prior to the measurements, the full energy peak efficiency was carefully characterized, which enabled the determination of absolute emission intensities, with an uncertainty of the order of 1%. Some corrections had to be introduced using Monte Carlo simulations, in particular to take into account the surface activity inhomogeneities of the sources. Total and group L X-ray emission intensities are compared with the available data and with the recommended values. In addition, nearly 30 individual L X-ray intensities are presented. Abstract

The CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay in $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched $$\hbox {Li}_{{2}}$$ Li 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 $$\hbox {MoO}_4$$ MoO 4 scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of $$\sim 0.2$$ ∼ 0.2 kg, operated at $$\sim 20$$ ∼ 20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo ($$^{100}$$ 100 Mo exposure of 1.47 $$\hbox {kg} \times \hbox {year}$$ kg × year ) used to search for lepton number violation via 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo 0$$\nu \beta \beta $$ ν β β decay half-life of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu }$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν $$> {1.8}\times 10^{24}$$ > 1.8 × 10 24 year (stat. + syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\left$$ m β β $$ < ( 0.28 - 0.49 ) eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized.

Abstract

The RICOCHET reactor neutrino observatory is planned to be installed at the Laue Langevin Institute (ILL) starting mid-2022. Its scientific goal is to perform a low-energy and high precision measurement of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) spectrum in order to explore exotic physics scenarios. RICOCHET will host two cryogenic detector arrays: the CryoCube (Ge target) and the Q-ARRAY (Zn target), operated at 10 mK. The 1 kg Ge CryoCube will consist of 27 Ge crystals instrumented with NTD-Ge thermal sensors and charge collection electrodes for a simultaneous heat and ionization readout to reject the electromagnetic backgrounds (gamma, beta, x-rays). We present the status of its front-end electronics. The first stage of amplification is made of High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) developed by CNRS/C2N laboratory, optimized to achieve ultra-low noise performance at 1K with a dissipation as low as 15 $\mu$W per channel. Our noise model predicts that 10 eV heat and 20 eVee RMS baseline resolutions are feasible with a high dynamic range for the deposited energy (up to 10 MeV) thanks to loop amplification schemes. Such resolutions are mandatory to have a high discrimination power between nuclear and electron recoils at the lowest energies., Comment: submitted to Journal of Low Temperature Physics. Abstract

The Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CENNS) is a process predicted nearly 40 years ago. In August 2017, the COHERENT experiment reported the first keV-scale detection at the 6.7 sigma level of this process, which is a probe for the new low energy physics, opening a window on a myriad of new physics opportunities. The RICOCHET experiment aims at measuring with high accuracy the CENNS process in order to probe various exotic physics scenarios in the electroweak sector. Using cryogenic bolometers operated in a cryostat 8 meters away from the core of the ILL research nuclear reactor, the experiment will benefit from an intense neutrino flux, allowing the results of COHERENT to be reproduced in a single week. The objective of an accurate measurement will be achieved after one year of data collection, by 2024. The CRYOCUBE is a compact cubic array of cryogenic detectors with the following specifications: a very low energy threshold of O(10) eV on the thermal signal, an electromagnetic background rejection of at least 10^3 and a total target mass of 1 kg distributed among 27 germanium crystals of about 30 g each. The objective of this thesis is to propose an optimized detector design for the CRYOCUBE, inspired by the cryogenic germanium detectors equipped with charge and temperature readings of the direct dark matter search experiment EDELWEISS. This joint R&D program is based on event discrimination realized in germanium semiconductor crystals. The recoil energy of an incident particle is derived either from the increase of the crystal temperature measured by a GeNTD thermistor (heat channel) or from the excited electric charges collected by electrodes on its surface (ionization channel). This double energy measurement makes it possible to distinguish the nuclear recoils produced by the CENNS or the dark matter from the electronic radioactive background. As these recoils are of the order of O(100) eV, this thesis work is focused on the development of a new generation of cryogenic low threshold germanium detectors with particle identification. It explores how to improve the resolution in heat and ionization energy up to O(10) eV while maintaining a good rejection of background events. This study is based on the testing of prototype detectors in the IP2I cryostat, which are compared to theoretical predictions from electro-thermal and electrostatic modeling of the detectors. This manuscript begins with the definition of the CENNS process, its scientific importance and the objectives of the RICOCHET experiment. It then presents the cryogenic installation allowing the surface operation of the detectors at 20 mK in optimal conditions. An electro-thermal model of the bolometers, compared with experimental data, is developed and applied to the simulation of the noise associated with the electronics of the heat signal. The thesis then formalizes the generation of the ionization signals arising from excited charge carriers drifting in the germanium crystal under the influence of the applied electric field. The expected resolution from a future low-noise electronics is modeled based on two detector designs. They are optimized by their electrostatic simulation in a finite element calculation software. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental performance of ionization is performed on the basis of the RED80 and REDN1 prototype detectors. This work ends with the characterization of the radioactive background in the cryogenic laboratory with the analysis of the data from RED80, and in particular its neutron component, used to estimate the expected background at the ILL site for RICOCHET, La diffusion élastique cohérente neutrino-noyau (CENNS) est un processus prédit il y a près de 40 ans. En août 2017, l'expérience COHERENT a rapporté la première détection à l’échelle du keV au niveau 6,7 sigma, de ce processus qui est une sonde pour la nouvelle physique à basse énergie, ouvrant une fenêtre sur une myriade de nouvelles possibilités en matière de physique. L'expérience RICOCHET vise à mesurer avec une grande précision le processus CENNS afin de sonder divers scénarios de physique exotique dans le secteur électrofaible. En utilisant des bolomètres cryogéniques installés dans un cryostat à 8 mètres du cœur du réacteur nucléaire de recherche de l'ILL, l’expérience bénéficiera d'un flux intense de neutrinos, permettant de reproduire les résultats de COHERENT en une semaine. L'objectif de mesure précise sera atteint après un an de collecte de données, d’ici 2024. Le CRYOCUBE est un ensemble compact cubique de détecteurs cryogéniques présentant les spécifications suivantes : un seuil en énergie très faible de O(10) eV sur le signal thermique, un rejet du fond électromagnétique d'au moins 10^3 et une masse totale de la cible de 1 kg répartie entre 27 cristaux de germanium d'environ 30 g chacun. L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer une conception optimisée des détecteurs pour le CRYOCUBE, inspirée des détecteurs cryogéniques en germanium équipés de lecture de charge et de températures de l'expérience de détection directe de matière noire EDELWEISS. Ce programme conjoint de R&D est basé sur la discrimination d'événements réalisée dans des cristaux de germanium semi-conducteurs. L'énergie de recul d'une particule incidente est dérivée soit de l'augmentation de la température du cristal mesurée par une thermistance GeNTD (voie chaleur), soit des charges électriques excitées collectées par des électrodes à sa surface (voie ionisation). Cette double mesure d'énergie permet de distinguer les reculs nucléaires produits par le CENNS ou la matière noire, du fond radioactif électronique. Ces reculs étant de l’ordre de O(100) eV, ce travail de thèse est axé sur le développement d'une nouvelle génération de détecteurs cryogéniques au germanium à faible seuil avec identification des particules. Il explore comment améliorer la résolution en énergie chaleur et ionisation jusqu'à O(10) eV tout en conservant un bon rejet des événements de fond. Cette étude est basée sur l'essai de prototypes de détecteurs dans le cryostat IP2I, qui sont comparés aux prévisions théoriques issues de la modélisation électro-thermique et électrostatique des détecteurs. Ce manuscrit commence par la définition du processus CENNS, son importance scientifique et les objectifs de l'expérience RICOCHET. Il présente ensuite l'installation cryogénique permettant le fonctionnement en surface des détecteurs à 20 mK dans des conditions optimales. Un modèle électro-thermique des bolomètres, comparé à des données expérimentales, est développé et appliqué à la simulation du bruit associé à l’électronique du signal chaleur. La thèse formalise ensuite la génération des signaux d'ionisation résultant de la dérive, sous l'influence du champ électrique exercé, de porteurs de charge excités dans le cristal de germanium. La résolution attendue d’une future électronique bas-bruit est modélisée à partir de deux designs de détecteurs. Ils sont optimisés par leur simulation électrostatique dans un logiciel de calculs aux éléments finis. Une comparaison des performances théoriques et expérimentales de l'ionisation est effectuée sur la base des prototypes de détecteurs RED80 et REDN1. Ces travaux se terminent par la caractérisation du bruit de fond radioactif dans le laboratoire cryogénique avec l’analyse des données de RED80, et notamment sa composante neutronique, utilisée pour estimer le fond attendu sur le site ILL pour RICOCHET

We present the results of the first complete characterization of a small scale X-ARAPUCA prototype, which is a slice of a full DUNE module. Its total detection efficiency in liquid argon was measured with three different ionizing radiations: alpha particles, gamma's and muons and resulted to be similar to 2.2% when the active silicon photomultipliers were biased at +5.0 V of over voltage, corresponding to a Photon Detection Efficiency around 50c7o at room temperature. Abstract

In this article we report a novel phenomenon that we observed while evaluating the performances of different models of silicon photomultiplier detectors at liquid nitrogen temperature. Bursts of consecutive events, characterized by a rate that is about 100 times that of the single-event uncorrelated dark counts, are generated within the SiPMs, resulting in an overall increase of the dark current. We observed these bursts in the vast majority of the tested SiPM models manifactured by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. This observation is part of an effort to fully characterise the behaviour of SiPMs at cryogenic temperature. The investigation of this phenomenon, of which a first attempt is presented in this article, can impact future production and selection of models for both high energy physics and industrial applications.

Abstract

A scintillating bolometer based on a large cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal (45 mm side) and a Ge wafer (scintillation detector) has been operated in the CROSS cryogenic facility at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. The dual-readout detector is a prototype of the technology that will be used in the next-generation $0\nu2\beta$ experiment CUPID. The measurements were performed at 18 and 12 mK temperature in a pulse tube dilution refrigerator. This setup utilizes the same technology as the CUORE cryostat that will host CUPID and so represents an accurate estimation of the expected performance. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer shows a high energy resolution of 6 keV FWHM at the 2615 keV $\gamma$ line. The detection of scintillation light for each event triggered by the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer allowed for a full separation ($\sim$8$\sigma$) between $\gamma$($\beta$) and $\alpha$ events above 2 MeV. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal also shows a high internal radiopurity with $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra activities of less than 3 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively. Taking also into account the advantage of a more compact and massive detector array, which can be made of cubic-shaped crystals (compared to the cylindrical ones), this test demonstrates the great potential of cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers for high-sensitivity searches for the $^{100}$Mo $0\nu2\beta$ decay in CROSS and CUPID projects., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Cryogenic macro-calorimeters instrumented with NTD thermistors have been developed for several decades. The choice of the optimal bias current is crucial for a proper operation of these detectors, both in terms of energy resolution and stability. In this paper we present a set of automatic measurements and analysis procedures for the characterization and optimization of the working configuration of the NTD thermistors. The presented procedures were developed for CUORE , an array of 988 cryogenic macro-calorimeters instrumented with NTD thermistors that has been taking data since 2017. These procedures made it possible to characterize a large number of detectors in a reliable way. They are suitable enough to be used also in other large arrays of cryogenic detectors, such as CUPID.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2\textsuperscript{nd} result of the search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ with a TeO$_2$ exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a $^{130}$Te $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $1.7\cdot 10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and set a 90\% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot 10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for $0\nu\beta\beta$, as well as review the detector performance. Finally, we give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the $^{130}$Te two neutrino double-beta ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay half-life.

International audience; QUBIC is a ground-based experiment aiming to measure the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background. The developed instrument is an innovative two-frequency band bolometric interferometer that will operate at 300 mK with NbSi TES arrays. Abstract

The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a dedicated 10-meter diameter telescope optimized for mm-wavelength surveys of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with arcminute resolution. The first instrument deployed at SPT features a 960 element array of horn-coupled bolometers. These devices consist of fully lithographed spider-web absorbers and aluminum-titanium bilayer transition edge sensors fabricated on adhesive-bonded silicon wafers with embedded metal backplanes. The focal plane is cooled using a closed cycle pulse-tube refrigerator, and read-out using Frequency Domain Multiplexed Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs.) Design features were chosen to optimize sensitivy in the atmospheric observing bands available from the ground, and for stability with the frequency domain multiplexed readout system employed at SPT, and performance was verified with a combination of laboratory tests and field observations. In 2008 the SPT surveyed 200 square-degrees at 150 and 220 GHz. These data have been analyzed using a cross-spectrum analysis and multi-band Markov Chain Monte Carlo parameter fitting using a model that includes lensed primary CMB anisotropy, secondary thermal (tSZ) and kinetic (kSZ) Sunyaev-Zel'dovich anisotropies, unclustered synchrotron point sources, and clustered dusty point sources. In addition to measuring the power spectrum of dusty galaxies at high signal-to-noise, the data primarily constrain a linear combination of the kSZ and tSZ anisotropy contributions (at 150 GHz and ell=3000): DtSZ3000 + 0.5 DkSZ3000 = 4.5 ± 1.0 &mu K2, and place the lowest limits yet measured on secondary anisotropy power.

Abstract: In this paper we present a cryogenic performance study of specific optical and electrical components for the Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC), a potential far site detector technology of the long baseline neutrino experiment (LBNE). We have confirmed that an LVDS driver can drive a 20-meter CAT5E twisted pair up to 1 gigabit per second at liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). We have verified that a 16:1 serializer Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), three types of laser diodes, optical fibers and connectors, and field-programming gate arrays (FPGAs) continue to function at 77 K. A variety of commercial resistors and capacitors have been tested at 77 K. All tests we have conducted show that the cold front-end electronics is promising. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: ICARUS (Imaging Cosmic And Rare Underground Signals) is the the largest Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) in the world (containing _600 tons of LAr) addressed to the study of rare events and, among these, neutrino interactions. Installed in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (INFN-LNGS, Italy), ICARUS started working gradually since May, 27th 2010, collecting data both from the cosmic rays able to reach the depths of the laboratory and from neutrino interactions from the CNGS beam. The detector, providing a completely uniform imaging and calorimetry with a high accuracy on massive volumes, allows to reconstruct in real time neutrino and cosmic interactions, measuring the full kinematics of the identified particles. The ICARUS technology can be considered as a milestone towards the realization of next generation of massive detectors (tens of ktons) for neutrino and rare event phy sics.In this paper a short description of the ICARUS T600 experiment, detector main features and performances and its first underground results are presented. Abstract

Abstract: A high Light Yield Liquid Argon chamber has been radiated with an Am/Be source for signal-to-background separation level characterization in a Dark Matter Liquid Argon based detector. Apart from the standard nuclear recoil and electron events, from neutron elastic interactions and gamma conversions respectively, an intermediate population has been observed which is attributed to inelastic neutron scatters on Argon nuclei producing Argon recoil and simultaneous gammas from nuclear de-excitation. Taking account of these events results in a better determination of the recoil-like to electron-like separation based on the shape of the scintillation pulse. The results of this recent study as well as from a previous study with a chamber with a lower Light Yield are presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

We propose a new structure of a TES and a series connection of radiation absorber, which can stabilize the absorber temperature through a negative feedback process in the absorber. We consider that this structure of the self-heating absorber might allow TES to improve detection efficiency with large effective area and high count rate by the cooling power inside the absorber. The 150 μm × 150 μm gold film absorber and the 25 μm × 25 μm heat sensor made by Iridium/Gold bi-layer superconductor which has a Tc of 110 mK are biased in series. In this device the gold film absorber generates the self Joule heating to a certain extent to maintain the temperature of the TES pixel. By the photon incidence to the gold film absorber, thermalization of the heat sensor induces the large current reduction, then the current through the gold film absorber also reduces, therefore the gold film absorber is expected to be cooled rapidly by the reduction of joule heating power. This TES pixel achieves the energy resolution of 34 eV (FWHM) @ 5.9 keV and the time decay constant of 150 μs. Furthermore, we tried to perform the experiment of X-ray fluorescence analysis in the SPring-8 synchrotron facility. This TES pixel succeeded to resolve into the energy peaks derived from the material elements which contained in a stainless steel sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Precise measurement of neutron beta decay tests predictions of the Standard Model of electroweak interaction. The co-efficient a of the antineutrino/electron angular correlation is determined by measuring the energy spectrum of the recoil protons generated in the neutron beta decay. A proton spectrometer required for this measurement demands high detection efficiency, high energy resolution and a large detection area. We have begun development of a Transition Edge Sensor (TES) microcalorimeter for use as a low energy particle detector. To realize the large detection area we have designed a pixelated TES array incorporating a parallel biasing scheme. Our TES device consists of 4-pixels using a Au/Ti/Au trilayer film adjusted to a superconducting transition temperature of Tc ∼ 380 mK. This temperature is convenient for use in a 3He cryostat with a pulse tube refrigerator. The Au films improve thermal conductivity, thereby reducing position dependent effects and allow an increased detector area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, $^{39}$Ar, a $\beta$ emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric $^{39}$Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of $^{39}$Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of $^{39}$Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the $^{39}$Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly $\gamma$-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. This article describes the DArT in ArDM project, including the chamber design and construction, and reviews the background required to achieve the expected performance of the detector., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

The development of low-threshold detectors for the study of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and for the search for light dark matter necessitates methods of low-energy calibration. We suggest this can be provided by the nuclear recoils resulting from the $\gamma$ emission following thermal neutron capture. In particular, several MeV-scale single-$\gamma$ transitions induce well-defined nuclear recoil peaks in the 100 eV range. Using the FIFRELIN code, complete schemes of $\gamma$-cascades for various isotopes can be predicted with high accuracy to determine the continuous background of nuclear recoils below the calibration peaks. We present a comprehensive experimental concept for the calibration of CaWO$_4$ and Ge cryogenic detectors at a research reactor. For CaWO$_4$ the simulations show that two nuclear recoil peaks at 112.5 eV and 160.3 eV should be visible above background simply in the spectrum of the cryogenic detector. Then we discuss how the additional tagging for the associated $\gamma$ increases the sensitivity of the method and extends its application to a wider energy range and to Ge cryogenic detectors., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, Ar-39, a beta emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric Ar-39 activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of Ar-39, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of Ar-39 with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the Ar-39 content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly gamma-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. Abstract

ALCOR is a first prototype of a 32-pixel low-power mixed-signal ASIC developed to readout silicon photomultipliers at low temperature. The chip, designed in 110 nm CMOS technology, performs single photon time-stamping with a maximum event rate of 5 MHz per pixel. The time measurement is performed using low-power TDCs based on analogue time interpolation. The time binning achievable at maximum clock frequency is 50 ps and the target power consumption is less than 5 mW per pixel. Generated data are serialised and transmitted through LVDS drivers. To assert the CMOS electronic behaviour at 77 K, a Test Chip has been produced and tested. Results of a digital synchronisation circuit are reported and discussed.

Abstract

The performances of silicon photomultipliers with different structures are investigated at low temperature.The first sample is a micro pixel avalanche photodiode with deep buried pixel structure from Zecotek Photonics Inc. The second and third ones are multi-pixel photo counters with a surface pixel design from Hamamatsu Photonics. The influence of temperature on the main parameters of the photodiodes such as photon detection efficiency (PDE), gain, and capacitance was studied in the temperature range from 0C to -120C.

Abstract

The X-ARAPUCA is a device for the detection of scintillation light in liquid argon and represents an evolution of the ARAPUCA design, with an increased collection efficiency and a simpler design.
