Rare earth elements (REEs) have been identified as valuable and critical raw materials, vital for numerous technologies and applications. With the increasing demand for and supply gap in REEs, many research studies have focused on alternative sources of REEs. This study involved an elemental and mineralogical characterisation of discarded coal from a coal plant and coal fly ash (CFA) from a power station in South Africa for REE presence. XRD results revealed that the discard coal sample consisted mainly of kaolinite, pyrite, siderite, quartz, calcite, gypsum, and muscovite, whereas CFA contained abundant glassy amorphous phases, alumina silicates, quartz, gypsum, calcite, and minute levels of muscovite and hematite. SEM-EDAX showed REE-carrying grains containing phosphorus in both discard coal and CFA samples. This was followed by investigating the leaching potential of REEs using hydrochloric acid from discard coal and CFA. This research's potential impact is possibly providing a new and sustainable source of REEs. For that purpose, multiple batch leaching tests were performed to investigate the effects of temperature and acid concentration on the leaching efficiencies of REEs from discard coal and CFA. The experimental results indicated that temperature strongly influences REE leaching efficiency, while acid concentration has a lesser impact. Zeolites have been increasingly applied in various fields such as energy conversion, environmental remediation, chemical production, and so on, being used as membranes, catalysts, and supports due to their large specific areas and strong gas adsorption. And, developing low-cost strategies for the preparation of zeolites has attracted the extensive attention of researchers. Coal fly ash, waste glass, discard zeolites, and slags are typical industrial wastes and rich in Si and Al, indicating that these industrial wastes can be utilized as alternative raw materials of zeolite synthesis. Firstly, the chemical composition and properties of these industrial wastes are summarized. Then, the strategies involved in synthesizing different zeolites from various industrial wastes are discussed. In addition, the applications of these zeolites are comprehensively reviewed. Zeolite adsorbents were synthesized through an alkali fusion-hydrothermal process, using coal fly ash as a raw material. Firstly, the coal fly ash was mixed with sodium hydroxide at a mass ratio of 1∶1.2 and then roasted at 850 ℃ for 2 h to obtain the alkali-fused ash. The effects of the Si/Al molar ratio of the precursor, reaction time, temperature, and liquid/solid ratio on the structure of the zeolite adsorbents derived from coal fly ash were investigated through single-factor experiments conducted during the hydrothermal reaction. The synthesized zeolite adsorbents derived from coal fly ash were systematically characterized using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and specific surface area and pore size analyzer (BET). Under the optimized conditions of a Si/Al molar ratio of the precursor set at 1.5, a reaction time of 16 h, a reaction temperature of 70 ℃, and a liquid/solid ratio of 8 mL/g in hydrothermal reaction, the relative mass fraction of type X zeolite in the synthesized product was 96.3%, the specific surface area was 489.9 m2/g, and the pore volume was 0.28 cm3/g. Subsequently, the gas adsorption performance of benzene, a typical volatile organic compound, by zeolite adsorbent derived from coal fly ash was investigated and compared with commercial activated carbon. The results showed that at an initial pollutant concentration of 800 μg/L, an adsorption temperature of 100 ℃, a gas flow rate of 200 mL/min, and an adsorbent loading of 0.1 g, the zeolite adsorbents derived from coal fly ash exhibited a saturated adsorption capacity of benzene at 41.5 mg/g, which was higher compared to commercial activated carbon (31.3 mg/g). This study provides a reference for the resource utilization of coal fly ash.

Abstract Zeolite molecular sieves are potential adsorbents for wastewater treatment, characterized by high efficiency, simple process, easy regeneration, and low treatment cost. In this study, zeolite A molecular sieves were prepared using coal fly ash (CFA), which is an effective method for the utilization of CFA. The results showed that the CFA-based zeolite molecular sieves synthesized under optimized conditions exhibited excellent adsorption and removal rates (> 40%) for ammonia–nitrogen in wastewater of different concentrations and properties. The analysis of adsorption kinetics revealed that the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics model, indicating that the adsorption of ammonia–nitrogen on zeolite is primarily controlled by chemisorption rather than physisorption. The adsorption process can be divided into two stages, with a higher adsorption rate and a smaller diffusion boundary layer thickness in the first stage, and a lower adsorption rate and an increased diffusion boundary layer thickness in the second stage. This indicates that as the adsorption proceeds, the internal diffusion resistance within the particles gradually increases, leading to a decrease in the adsorption rate until reaching equilibrium, where both the diffusion and adsorption become stable. The adsorption isotherms of ammonia–nitrogen on zeolite A conformed to the assumptions of the Langmuir model, suggesting that the adsorption mechanism primarily involves uniform monolayer adsorption on the surface without intermolecular interactions.

Abstract This study examines the influence of different grain size fractions of coal fly ash on the properties of clay-cement mortars used in flood levee construction. Dry aerodynamic separation and mesh sieving were used to obtain ultrafine, fine, and medium fractions of high-calcium and silica fly ash. The experimental results reveal that the rheological properties of fresh mortars are significantly influenced by these fractions. High-calcium fly ash mortars exhibit high reactivity and rapid increase in viscosity, with finer fractions showing the highest reactivity. Silica ashes show increased reactivity in the later stages of suspension hardening. Their spherical shape contributes to reducing internal friction during flow in initial technological operations. Furthermore, the compressive strength of hardened mortars improves as the particle size decreases for both ashes, resulting in a dense and uniform microstructure. The separation and fractionation of fly ashes contribute to the obtaining of fractions that influence the parameters of clay-cement suspension application on different scales. The results show the potential benefits of ash separation, which can bring advantages in terms of economic viability, engineering performance, and ecological sustainability.

Utilizing calcium-based adsorbents for CO2 adsorption through cyclic calcination/carbonization is one of the most cost-effective methods for carbon emission reduction. In order to improve the cycle stability of the adsorbents and the capture efficiency of CO2, this study used industrial solid waste coal fly ash for the hydration treatment of calcium-based adsorbent to explore the variations in the cyclic adsorption performance of the adsorbent under different doping ratios and hydration conditions. By means of various characterization techniques, the microscopic mechanism for improving the performance of the modified adsorbent was analyzed from the perspectives of chemical composition, physical structure, and surface functional groups of the adsorbents. The results demonstrated that the modification of coal fly ash could significantly enhance the carbonation performance and cycle stability of the adsorbent in multiple CO2 capture processes. The modified material doped with 5% coal fly ash had the highest total CO2 adsorption capacity, which increased by 13.7% compared to before modification. Additionally, the modified material doped with 10% coal fly ash exhibited the strongest cyclic adsorption capacity, which was 14.0% higher than that before modification, and the adsorption attenuation rate decreased by 32.2%. The characterization results showed that the reaction between calcium oxide and coal fly ash formed CaSiO3 and Ca12Al14O33 during the modification process, which was the primary reason for the improvement in the CO2 capture performance of the modified materials. The compound p-Nitrophenol (p-NP) is widely recognized as a highly toxic nitro-aromatic substance that urgently requires emission control. Reducing p-NP to p-aminophenol (p-AP) not only decreases its toxicity and mineralization properties in nature but also provides a key raw material for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The study used coal fly ash (CFA) as a catalyst carrier for synthesizing the p-NP reduction catalyst. Using CFA as an alternative option not only reduces costs but also achieves the objective of treating waste with waste compared to utilizing commercial solid materials for synthesizing catalysts. By employing hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide pretreatment methods, the physicochemical properties of CFA are significantly improved, enhancing the dispersion of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles. The structural features of the prepared samples were characterized using various surface analysis techniques, and both intermittent and continuous modes were experimentally tested for the model catalytic reaction involving the sodium borohydride (NaBH4)-mediated reduction of p-NP. The counter electrode in DSSCs must be made of a material with various advantageous chemical and physical characteristics to guarantee the cell's efficient functioning and cost efficiency. Coal fly ash is recognized for its substantial silicon dioxide (SiO2) content and other minerals and metals. This paper provides a detailed analysis and description of extracting and characterizing SiO2 from coal fly ash. This extraction aims to utilize SiO2 as a material for the counter electrode in DSSCs. The extraction procedure of SiO2 from coal fly ash involves a multi-step process that entailed the utilization of acid leaching using hydrochloric acid 1 M at 90°C for 4 h, which was subsequently followed by precipitation using NaOH 3 M at 90°C for 4 h to separate SiO2. The SiO2 gel was cleaned of contaminants with hot distilled water and dried at 110°C for 12 h. The SiO2 that was obtained was analyzed utilizing a range of analytical techniques to evaluate its structural, morphological, chemical, and optical properties. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) examination revealed that the crystal structure of coal fly ash consisted of quartz, corundum, hematite, lime, and periclase. The SiO2 that was obtained exhibited a crystal structure that was both cubic and triclinic. The morphology is visualized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The study using atomic absorption spectroscopy revealed that the coal fly ash contained 52.91% SiO2, whereas the extracted SiO2 had a purity of 91.20%. The UV-Vis spectrophotometry investigation revealed that the SiO2 exhibited absorbance spectra with a wide band gap of 4.17 eV, whereas the coal fly ash had absorbance spectra of 3.37 eV. Using fly ash to synthesize zeolite molecular sieves can improve the reuse value of coal fly ash resources, reduce the synthesis cost of the zeolites, and protect the ecology. A novel approach was proposed to prepare zeolite socony mobil‐5 (ZSM‐5) zeolite via one‐pot hydrothermal synthesis. The mesoporous ZSM‐5 synthesized by adjusting the molar ratio of chemical reagents has higher crystallinity, larger specific surface area, and more adsorption sites. An analysis of methylene blue (MB) adsorption on mesoporous ZSM‐5 was conducted at many different adsorption parameters, including solution concentration, temperature, and duration of adsorption. The Langmuir model can objectively describe the adsorption behavior of MB on ZSM‐5, and the adsorption characteristics of MB on ZSM‐5 are better described by the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model. Lithium, a critical material for the global development of green energy sources, is anomalously enriched in some coal deposits and coal by-products to levels that may be considered economically viable. Recovering lithium from coal, particularly from coal gangue or coal ashes, offers a promising alternative for extracting this element. This process could potentially lead to economic gains and positive environmental impacts by more efficiently utilizing coal-based waste materials. This review focuses on lithium concentrations in coal and coal by-products, modes of lithium occurrence, methods used to identify lithium-enriched phases, and currently available hydrometallurgical recovery methods, correlated with pretreatment procedures that enable lithium release from inert aluminosilicate minerals. Leaching of raw coal appears inefficient, whereas coal gangue and fly ash are more feasible due to their simpler composition and higher lithium contents. Lithium extraction can achieve recovery rates of over 90%, but low lithium concentrations and high impurity levels in the leachates require advanced selective separation techniques. In this article, a novel method for SiC production from a residue of coal fly ash (CFA) after high-pressure leaching with a mixture of NH 4 HSO 4 + H 2 SO 4 is proposed. A thermodynamic analysis showed that SiC can be obtained at >1500 °C, and titanium carbide (TiC) and ferrosilicon (FeSi) can form as byproducts. Carbothermal reduction of the CFA residue with carbon in the range 1300–1500 °C with holding time 1–3 h was investigated. X-ray phase analysis (XRD) indicated that SiC forms at >1425 °C. Iron compounds in the form of Fe 3 Si and Fe 5 Si 3 were detected by Mössbauer spectroscopy in a sample sintered at 1500 °C. The possibility of SiC production by a two-step procedure was demonstrated. First, a SiC powder was obtained from the CFA residue and carbon at 1500 °C, then SiC was mixed with yttrium aluminum garnet Y 3 Al 5 O 12 and processed by spark plasma sintering at 1750–2000 °C, holding time 5 min, and pressure 50 MPa. Ceramic samples obtained at 1850 and 1900 °C with compressive strength of 350 ± 17.5 & 416 ± 20.8 MPa and Vickers hardness of 17.89 ± 0.89 & 15.97 ± 0.79 GPa, respectively, proved to be comparable to the best reported SiC + yttrium aluminum garnet ceramics. Thus, this study presents an original method for ceramics production from solid waste of coal-fired power plants; this approach will allow to create a comprehensive technology for utilizing 100 % of CFA. Coal fly ash (CFA), a by-product of coal combustion, is a valuable raw material for various applications. However, the heterogeneous nature of the composition and properties of CFA provides challenges to its effective usage and utilisation. This study investigates the thermal behaviour of the fly ashes of lignite (FA1) and brown coal (FA2) and their fractions obtained by dry aerodynamic separation. Thermal analysis techniques, including thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and evolved gas analysis (EGA), were used to characterise the behaviour of the fly ash fractions while heating up to 1250 °C. The results reveal distinct differences in the thermal behaviour between ash types and among their different size fractions. For the FA1 ashes, the concentration of calcium-rich compounds and the level of recrystallisation at 950 °C increased with the decrease in particle size. The most abundant detected newly formed minerals were anhydrite, gehlenite, and anorthite, while coarser fractions were rich in quartz and mullite. For the FA2 ashes, the temperature of the onset of melting and agglomeration decreased with decreasing particle size and was already observed at 995 °C. Coarser fractions mostly remain unchanged, with a slight increase in quartz, mullite, and hematite content. Recrystallisation takes place in less extension compared to the FA1 ashes. The findings demonstrate that the aerodynamic separation of fly ashes into different size fractions can produce materials with varied thermal properties and reactivity, which can be used for specific applications. This study highlights the importance of thermal analysis in characterising fly ash properties and understanding their potential for utilisation in various applications involving thermal treatment or exposure to high-temperature conditions. Further research on advanced separation techniques and the in-depth characterisation of fly ash fractions is necessary to obtain materials with desired thermal properties and identify their most beneficial applications. Coal fly ash, an industrial solid waste product, and natural sand, a commonly available and inexpensive natural material, were used to fabricate ceramic membranes that are both affordable and sustainable. These ceramic membranes were fabricated by the uniaxial compaction technique using a manual hydraulic pressing machine. The effects of various fabrication parameters such as the sintering temperature and the amount of natural sand utilized, on the properties of the resulting ceramic membranes were extensively evaluated. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of the starting materials confirmed the presence of SiO2 and Al2O3, two key inorganic materials required for the fabrication of ceramic membranes. Heavy metals present in the raw coal fly ash were leached out prior to the fabrication process. The coal fly ash and natural sand were mixed in different proportions and the fabricated ceramic membranes were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The properties of the optimized membranes were further studied to ascertain their mechanical strength, chemical stability, porosity, water absorption, water permeability, and shrinkage behaviour. The membrane fabricated with 20 wt% sand content and at 1000 °C sintering temperature had pore size of 0.64 µm and 34.7 % porosity, exhibited good mechanical strength (7.71 MPa), and exceptional chemical stability. The membrane also showed a remarkable water permeability of 32.23 L/m2/h. This study showed that natural sand and coal fly ash can be efficiently employed to develop a multifunctional filtration membrane with adjustable properties that can be utilized in water purification.

Coal fly ash (CFA) is a predominant waste by-product of coal combustion which is disposed of in open ash dams that utilize large pieces of land. This waste material is classified as a hazardous substance in South Africa as well as in other countries due to its fine particles that are easily blown to the atmosphere and the unacceptable levels of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. Contaminants in CFA can pollute surface and ground water, agricultural sites, soil and therefore pose risks to the health of humans and the environment. More than 500 million tons of CFA is produced yearly and over 200 million tons remain unused globally. The production will continue due to high consumer energy demands, especially in countries with heavy reliance on coal for power generation. Despite a significant progress made on the application of phytoremediation approach for decontamination of polluted sites, there is very limited evidence for its potential in the rehabilitation of CFA dumps. Low organic carbon, microbial activities and availability of nutrients including nitrogen contribute to restricted plant growth in CFA, and therefore converting ash dumps to barren lands devoid of vegetation. Leguminous plant species can fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic association with bacteria. Therefore, their intercropping mixture development can improve the chemistry of the substrate and facilitate nutrients availability to the companion plants. This approach can enhance the performance of phytoremediation and promote sustainable practices. The paper provides an overview of the ongoing burden of CFA disposal and discusses the ecological and economic benefits of using legumes, aromatic and bioenergy plants. We identify knowledge gaps to establishing vegetation in ash dumping sites, and provide insights to encourage continued research that will enhance the applicability of phytoremediation in restoration programs.

In this study, the production of an eco-friendly curcumin based nanocomposite fingerprint labeling powder is reported for the first time. This powder was prepared from thermal power plant waste known as coal fly ash. 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) was covalently interacted with coal fly ash (CFA/APTMS) and curcumin (CUR) was encapsulated onto CFA/APTMS to give a novel and eco-friendly CFA/APTMS/CUR nanocomposite for LFPs detection with the powder dusting method. Several instrumental techniques including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy (FL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize this nanocomposite. The CFA/APTMS/CUR nanocomposite was applied as a forensic powder for the development of latent fingerprint (LFPs) images on various porous and non-porous substrates. Level 2 (island, origination, bifurcation, termination, fork, dot, and bridge) and Level 3 (sweat pores and shape of triangles, round, and irregular) were the features of the LFP images. Under visible light conditions, the aging LFPs images were clearly detected on an aluminum foil surface using the nanocomposite powder, which had good sensitivity and minimal background interference. Additionally, LFPs images were developed using CFA/APTMS/CUR nanocomposite on leather substrates for belts and shoes in order to confirm the benefits of the nanocomposite's high sensitivity. This nanocomposite improved LFPs images with unique patterns and showed excellent performance on a variety of surfaces for the development of LFPs. These findings therefore proved that the powdered CFA/APTMS/CUR nanocomposite can be effectively utilized for the development of LFPs images at important crime scenes and for the biometric identification of criminal suspects through fingerprint comparison.

Abstract CO2 mineralization plays a critical role in the storage and utilization of CO2. Coal fly ash (CFA) and red mud (RM) are widely utilized as CO2 mineralizers. However, the inert calcium species in CFA limit its carbonation capacity, meanwhile the substantial Ca2+ releasing of RM is hindered by a covering layer of calcium carbonate. In this study, CO2 mineralization in a composite system of CFA and RM was investigated to enhance the carbonation capacity. Multiple analyzers were employed to characterize the raw materials and resulting mineralization products. The results demonstrated that a synergistic effect existed in the composite system of CFA and RM, resulting in improving CO2 mineralization rate and efficiency. The produced calcium carbonate was ectopically attached the surface of CFA in the composite system, thus slowing down its coverage on the surface of RM. This phenomenon facilitated further releasing Ca2+ from the internal RM, thereby enhancing CO2 mineralization efficiency. Meanwhile, the inclusion of RM significantly improved the alkalinity of the composite system, which not only promoted the dissolution of Ca2+ of the inert CaSO4(H2O)2 in CFA, but also accelerated CO2 mineralization rate. The investigation would be beneficial to CO2 mineralization using industrial solid wastes.

Abstract Background Hundreds of millions of tons coal fly ash are produced annually to support economic development and industrial production. However, directly applying coal fly ash to agricultural production can decrease the land productivity and pose a threat to the ecosystem due to the poor physicochemical properties and seriously heavy metal pollution. Methods In this study, a field experiment to investigate the effects of coal fly ash as a soil amendment was conducted in Hebei province, China. The coal fly ash (CFA) soil field was mixed with the carrier soil (CS, without containing coal fly ash) at different rates (0–40% mass content) in the 0–20 cm layer of top soil and then mixed with a rotovator. The soil was then amended with 0.45–1.80 kg·m− 2 of G1 soil amendment for planting corn. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the response mechanism of soil microbial community activities, and soil physicochemical properties to soil amendment and carrier soil in coal fly ash soil. Key results The study found that the G1 amendment, which consisted of humic acid, polyacrylamide, zeolite powder, and FeSO4·7H2O, improved the soil chemical properties and physical structure by increasing soil bulk density and macroaggregates. The highest corn yield was observed in B5 (20% CS and 1.3500 kg·m− 2 G1). Meanwhile, the abundance of microorganisms that facilitate the circulation of soil nutrients such as Acidobacteria (77.05%), Sphingomonas (25.60%), Nitrospira (20.78%), Streptomyces (11.32%), and Gaiella (10.20%) was increased. Conclusions Overall, our results indicate that the use of coal fly ash soil as a amendment can enhance soil sustainability by improving soil microbial functions. These findings provide a reference for the development and application of coal fly ash soil amendments.

The results demonstrated that a synergistic effect existed in the composite system of CFA and RM, resulting in improving CO2 mineralization rate and efficiency. The produced calcium carbonate was ectopically attached the surface of CFA in the composite system, thus slowing down its coverage on the surface of RM. This phenomenon facilitated further releasing Ca2+ from the internal RM, thereby enhancing CO2 mineralization efficiency. Meanwhile, the inclusion of RM significantly improved the alkalinity of the composite system, which not only promoted the dissolution of Ca2+ of the inert CaSO4(H2O)2 in CFA, but also accelerated CO2 mineralization rate. Diopside-Like based ceramics as the main crystalline phase (expressed as 'Diopside') were prepared via one-step sintering using extracted titanium slag (ETS) and coal fly ash (CFA) as raw materials. The effects of CFA content and sintering temperature on the crystal phase composition, microstructure, properties and crystallization kinetics were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. According to the findings, the addition of CFA supplemented the deficiency of Si and Al in ETS and balanced the Ca/Al/Si molar ratio in the system. Moreover, at the CFA doping of 20 %, melilite was gradually transformed into 'diopside' at 800–1100 °C that further remained stable at 1160–1200 °C. 'Despite' the fact that the crystallization activation energy increased and the Avrami index was at its lowest level (1.75), the crystallization temperature was reduced, whereas the crystallization rate increased, causing the ceramic body and surface to crystallize and thereby improving the properties of ceramics. Sintering at 1180 °C for 1 h resulted in ceramics with 'diopside' as the primary crystal phase composition. The water absorption, linear shrinkage, bulk density, bending strength, and acid resistance were respectively 1.3 %, 13 %, 2.89 g cm−3, 141.8 MPa, and 97.36 %. Background: Hundreds of millions of tons coal fly ash are produced annually to support economic development and industrial production. However, directly applying coal fly ash to agricultural production can decrease the land productivity and pose a threat to the ecosystem due to the poor physicochemical properties and seriously heavy metal pollution. Methods: In this study, a field experiment to investigate the effects of coal fly ash as a soil amendment was conducted in Hebei province, China. The coal fly ash (CFA) soil field was mixed with the carrier soil (CS, without containing coal fly ash) at different rates (0–40% mass content) in the 0–20 cm layer of top soil and then mixed with a rotovator. The soil was then amended with 0.45–1.80 kg·m− 2 of G1 soil amendment for planting corn. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the response mechanism of soil microbial community activities, and soil physicochemical properties to soil amendment and carrier soil in coal fly ash soil. Key results: The study found that the G1 amendment, which consisted of humic acid, polyacrylamide, zeolite powder, and FeSO4·7H2O, improved the soil chemical properties and physical structure by increasing soil bulk density and macroaggregates. The highest corn yield was observed in B5 (20% CS and 1.3500 kg·m− 2 G1). Meanwhile, the abundance of microorganisms that facilitate the circulation of soil nutrients such as Acidobacteria (77.05%), Sphingomonas (25.60%), Nitrospira (20.78%), Streptomyces (11.32%), and Gaiella (10.20%) was increased. Conclusions: Overall, our results indicate that the use of coal fly ash soil as a amendment can enhance soil sustainability by improving soil microbial functions. The NaP zeolite with excellent crystallinity and adsorption performance was obtained by adopting the Na2SiO3 and NaAlO2 from coal fly ash as the raw materials. As the synthesis condition of aging for 0.5 h at 30ηC and crystalizing for 8 h at 120ηC with n(H2O)/n(SiO2) = 116, n(Na2O)/n(SiO2) = 1.4, and n(SiO2)/n(Al2O3) = 2.8, NaP zeolite owned higher crystallinity (98.98%) and spherical morphology (~2.78 μm). During the crystallization, the nucleation/ growth kinetics was calculated to survey the crystallization mechanism via the theoretical calculation and characterization methods. The diffusion of reactants in the solid--liquid-phase interface was dominant, wherein the heterogeneous nucleation and solid-phase transformation were also proposed based on the fitting results of Avarami--Erofeev and simple kinetic equations. The activation energy results of nucleation (En, 27.67 kJ/mol) and growth (Eg, 13.31 kJ/mol) demonstrated that the induced nucleation period was the critical step during the crystallization. Hence, the method of rapid nucleation was introduced and the induced nucleation time was shortened 50% (from ~2.0 to ~1.0 h) as the crystal seed was added. Moreover, the grain size of NaP-Seed zeolite reduced to ~2.02 μm. Meanwhile, the synthesized NaP zeolite adsorbent was employed for the removal of phenol compound fromthe aqueous solution.Under the synergistic effect of electrostatic interaction and pore filling effect, NaP zeolite exhibited better adsorption with the removal rate of 82.63% (pH = 5.0 and 40 min) and stability in the five consecutive cycles. This study assessed concrete durability in pig farm environments, focusing on resistance to organic acid corrosion and physical abrasion. It used supplementary cementitious materials like silica fume (SF), coal fly ash (CFA), and bagasse fly ash (BFA) to improve concrete resilience. The research involved casting and testing concrete samples for compressive strength, acid corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, and their combined effects. A custom apparatus simulated corrosion and abrasion cycles typical in pig farm flooring. Results showed that a combination of SF, CFA, and BFA significantly enhanced compressive strength, especially with extended curing. Additionally, these materials improved concrete's resistance to acid corrosion, physical abrasion, and their combined effects. The replacement of 30 wt% of cement with CFA and BFA in concrete significantly reduced mass loss due to acid corrosion to less than 10%, whereas the control mix exhibited a mass loss exceeding 24%. Additionally, concrete with 30 wt% CFA or BFA replacement exhibited a minimal combined mass loss, decreasing to less than 2.5% due to acid corrosion and physical abrasion, as opposed to the 16% observed in the control mixture.

Abstract The electricity demand is increasing rapidly with the development of society and technology. Coal-fired thermal power plants have become one of the primary sources of electricity generation for urbanization. However, coal-fired thermal power plants produce a great amount of by-product coal fly ash every year. Coal fly ash disposal in landfills requires a sizable space and has negative environmental impacts. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new technologies and methods to utilize this enormous volume of solid waste in order to protect the environment. In this review, the fundamental physical and chemical characteristics of coal fly ash are introduced, and afterward the disposal policies and utilization ways of coal fly ash are discussed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various ways this waste. The leaching of valuable metals in coal fly ash and the extraction of metal elements in leachate under different conditions are also summarized. Furthermore, the possibility of coal fly ash to serve as a supplementary source for mineral resources is analyzed, providing a basis for its extensive use as a raw material in the metal industry in China and worldwide.

Abstract Indirect carbonation, a technology to store CO2 and produce stable CaCO3 and MgCO3, involves elution of Ca and Mg from industrial waste and subsequent carbonation. Although substantial residual waste is generated after the elution of Ca and Mg, its recycling attributes have not been adequately scrutinized. The residual waste has lower Ca and Mg contents and higher Si and Al contents than those of the raw material (i.e., industrial waste). This study involves the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolite-P using residual waste from indirect carbonation, conducted at both 100 and 180 ℃. The properties of these zeolites are compared with those synthesized from coal fly ash (CFA). The synthesized zeolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analyzer, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). A high zeolite conversion efficiency was achieved through a hydrothermal reaction (up to 87%), even though Si and Al were not added to the residual waste. Additionally, the cation exchange capacity and BET specific surface area of the synthesized zeolites were high (200 cmol kg−1 and 73 m2 g−1, respectively). These findings highlight the possibility of synthesizing zeolites using the residual waste from indirect carbonation as an alternative to conventional zeolite synthesis using industrial waste such as CFA. The synthesized zeolite-P is expected to be effective in wastewater treatment, detergent manufacturing, and water softening.

The present study focuses on the synthesis of a manganese dioxide lithium ion sieve and its application for the extraction of lithium from coal fly ash. The preparation and adsorption experiments of the manganese dioxide lithium ion sieve were carried out using the orthogonal method, while the HCl elution experiment was carried out using the single factor method. The results showed that the optimum preparation conditions under which the average lithium adsorption efficiency reached 99.98% were a 10:1 mass ratio of manganese dioxide to lithium hydroxide, calcination at 800 °C for 60 min, 1.5 mol/L HCl, soaking for 24 h and stirring for 18 h. Additionally, the optimum adsorption efficiency was observed with an adsorption time of 30 min, KOH pH of 8 and KOH scrubbing time of 10 min, resulting in 100% lithium adsorption efficiency. The optimum elution conditions for lithium were determined to be an HCl concentration of 0.01 mol/L and an elution time of 40 min, giving 100% lithium elution efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lithium belongs to the critical elements and is used in a variety of high-tech applications. In the context of the circular economy, demand has arisen for technologies that are able to recover high-tech metals from wastes and byproducts. To achieve efficient recovery, apart from assessing metal enrichment, extensive knowledge of metal binding and leaching characteristics is required. The aim of the present study is to investigate the Li contents and mode of occurrence in Greek coal fly ashes. Eight coal fly ashes from different power plants in Greece were collected, and their major constituents were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF); their mineralogy was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and their Li content was determined by ICP–MS. To identify Li binding and leaching characteristics, two sequential extraction methods (Tessier and BCR) were employed. The results showed that the Li content in the samples studied was between 95 and 256 μg/g and could be mainly attributed to the amorphous material encountered in the samples. The sequential extraction experiments revealed that 70–90% of Li is included in the residual fraction, indicating that it is strongly bound to the fly ash matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal remains an important fuel for use in thermal power plants. However, coal-burning power plants produce large amounts of CFA, which contains TEs such as B, F, and Se, which are leached upon contact with water and act as potential polluters of aquifer systems and soil. To study the transformation of TEs, a thermodynamic calculation (FactSage 7.2) was used. Paper sludge ash was used as a calcium compound additive. The influence of blending a high-calcium additive on the environmental safety of TEs was investigated based on the effect of the mass addition ratio of PS ash. This study's results confirmed that the leaching processes of TEs, namely (CaO)2(Al2O3), CaF2, Ca10(PO4)F2, and CaSeO4(H2O)2, were caused by the formation of B, F, and Se compounds during the leaching process. Thus, it is clear that calcium has the greatest influence on the transformation of TEs due to their reaction, which, in turn, minimizes the effects of the TEs' release into the environment. The concentrations of TEs from the sample and addition of PS ash decreased slightly, indicating that the inhibition of TEs was enabled through the addition of PS ash. Although the PS ash YB had the highest calcium content, the PS ash YC gave the best results during the B and Se inhibition processes. The experimental observation was also evaluated for comparison. For the analysis of TEs' leaching ratios using the thermodynamic calculation and experiment, the experimental results were lower than those initially predicted. Despite numerous studies focused on the hydrothermal (HT) synthesis of fly ash zeolites (FAZs), this method still has many limitations, the main of which is the low yield of zeolites. Hydrothermally synthesized zeolites are typically multiphase and exhibit low purity, which limits their applicability. Pure-phase zeolites have been primarily prepared from filtrates after alkaline mineralization of fly ashes, not directly in suspension. In addition, the published methodologies have not been tested in a wider set of samples, and thus their reproducibility is not confirmed. The aim of the study is to propose a reproducible methodology that overcomes the mentioned limitations. The influence of the Si/Al ratio (1.3:1–1:2), the type and concentration of the activator (2/4 M NaOH/KOH/LiOH), the reagent (30% LiCl), the duration (24–168 h), and the temperature (50–180 °C) of the synthesis phases were studied. The sequence of the synthesis phases was also optimized, depending on the type of heat transfer. The fly ashes were analyzed by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD XRF), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The energy intensity of the synthesis was reduced through the application of unique microwave digestion technology. Both microwave and combined (microwave and convection) syntheses were conducted. FAZs were identified and quantified by XRD analysis. This study presents a three-stage (TS) hydrothermal synthesis of pure-phase sodalite in suspension. Sodalite (>99 wt.%) was prepared from nine fly ashes under the following conditions: I. microwave phase: 120 °C, 150 min, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L) 1:5, Si/Al ratio 1:1.5, and 4 M NaOH; II. convection phase: 120 °C, 24 h, S/L 1:40, and the addition of 30 mL of 30% LiCl; and III. crystallization: 70 °C for 24 h. Environmental pollution has become a global issue due to continuing anthropogenic activities that result in the production of enormous amounts of waste and the subsequent release of hazardous trace metals. The increasing levels of trace metals in the environment must be monitored regularly and reduced to prevent contamination of food chain. Numerous conventional technologies that are widely used for the removal of trace metals from environmental matrices have many drawbacks. Currently, the preferred method to remove trace metal ions is the adsorption process, which normally uses adsorbents. This review investigated the applications of coal fly ash (CFA) as a cost-effective adsorbent and the role it plays in the improved properties of nanomaterials that are used for treatment of trace metals in water. The use of CFA and its role in chemical modification processes results to high removal efficiency of trace metals. CFA is a by-product of coal combustion which is available in abundance and therefore its use is not only beneficial in water treatment processes, but also reduce the burden of solid waste disposal.

The high degree of oxidation and poor hydrophobicity of fly ash particles result in the formation of stable hydration films that impede the effective adsorption of conventional hydrocarbon-based collectors onto the particle surfaces. Conventional hydrocarbon oil collector can slightly improve the surface hydrophobicity of coal fly ash due to its low adsorption on the surface of coal fly ash particles, resulting in large consumption of flotation agent and difficulty in decarbonization of coal fly ash, thus seriously restricts the recovery and utilization of coal fly ash. In order to solve the problems of poor selectivity, low separation efficiency and serious environmental pollution of traditional collectors in the flotation decarbonization of coal fly ash, biodiesel was selected as the collector for the flotation decarbonization test of coal fly ash. The mechanism of enhanced decarbonization of coal fly ash by biodiesel collector was further analyzed by means of coating angle, saturated adsorption capacity, particle agglomeration behavior, infrared spectrum, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and other test methods. The test results show that compared with conventional hydrocarbon oil collectors, biodiesel has better selectivity and can improve the flotation effect. When the blend ratio of 1600 and 1030 is 3∶1 and the dosage is 200 g/t, the flotation effect is the best, and the effect of single 1600 and 1030 collectors is comparable. After treatment with different collectors, the coating angle is diesel1030>1600>composite agent. The particle aggregation size of 0.045～0.010 mm is composite agent>diesel>original sample. Mechanism analysis shows that the polar end groups of esters, carboxylic acids and alcohols in the biodiesel collector form hydrogen bonds with the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of coal fly ash to adsorb on the surface of coal fly ash, exposing the hydrophobic end of coal fly ash to slurry, improving the surface hydrophobicity of coal fly ash, making its fine particles easier to agglomerate, thus improving the floatability of coal fly ash and reducing the ash content of foam products. It provides strategies and guidance for the development of green and efficient flotation and decarbonization collectors suitable for coal fly ash.

Since slag and coal fly ash (CFA) are major global pollutants produced by thermal power plants (TPPs), special attention should be paid to their rational disposal. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the morphology of CFA and it was suggested that the use potential of CFA is high due to the presence of a large number of cenospheres (CSs), that can be recovered mostly by wet methods for the production of the wide range of products with improved properties. However, such decisions regarding the application of the cenospheres are largely related to the problem of their drying after removal. The article is devoted to the investigation of the filtration method as less energy-consuming for the drying of cenospheres. The effect of the drying agent velocity on the mass transfer intensity has been established. The values of mass transfer coefficients have been calculated based on the thin-layer experimental data and equation . Calculated mass transfer coefficients for cenospheres have been correlated by the dimensionless expression , based on which equation has been proposed to calculate the mass transfer coefficients, which is important at the filtration drying equipment design stage.

This is an essay in the field of metallurgical engineering. Calcium chloride was used as chlorination agent to conduct the heavy metals removal experiments for coal fly ash, investigating the effects of calcination temperature, calcination time and amount of CaCl2 on the removal rate of heavy metals. The results of calcination experiments and thermodynamic calculation demonstrate the mechanism of heavy metals removal in fly ash by using chlorinating volatilization method; further, the kinetic model of chlorinating process was discussed. Moreover, the coal fly ash, as raw material, was used to produce soil conditioner which was studied to discover its fertilizing effect by pot experiments. Studies found that the remaining contents of Pb and Cd in mixture were 10.22 g/t and 0.54 g/t, respectively, which meant 89.26% of Pb and 76.88% of Cd were decreased after addition of CaCl2 at high calcination temperature for 40 min. The mineral of mullite, quartz, alumina and disodium oxide in fly ash contributed to the decomposition of CaCl2. PbO and CdO mainly reacted with HCl formed by the decomposition of CaCl2 to form volatile chloride, meaning the oxides do not directly react with CaCl2. thermodynamic models fitting implied that the chlorination of Pb and Cd were controlled by the chemical reaction, and the apparent activation energy of reactions was 84.54 and 44.96 kJ/mol, respectively. Further, the pot experiments showed that the synthesized soil conditioner can improve the condition of the soil, promote nutrient absorption of chives, and improve the quality of chives. The effective calcium content of soil conditional product was increased after the reduction of heavy metals by adding CaCl2. This research provides a method for comprehensive utilization of fly ash.

In this study, a modified synthetic zeolite adsorbent was synthesized by the hydrothermal method using coal fly ash as the main raw material, and the enhanced phosphorus adsorption properties from aqueous solutions were then evaluated. The modification parameters were specifically studied and optimized. Moreover, the effects of initial phosphorus concentration, adsorption time, and pH value on phosphorus absorption were also investigated. The adsorbent was characterized by the energy-dispersive spectrometer analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the phosphorus adsorption properties of the zeolite adsorbent were preliminarily discussed through the perspectives of isothermal adsorption experiments, adsorption kinetics experiments, and adsorption thermodynamics calculations. The results show that the lanthanum ions were physically loaded on the surface and micropores of the adsorbent after modification, which helps to enhance the adsorption effect of phosphorus components from the aqueous solution. The phosphorus removal rate has been increased by about 65%. The adsorption process better fitted the Langmuir and Elovich equations. The theoretical calculation and analysis of adsorption thermodynamics showed that the adsorption and removal of phosphorus in water happens spontaneously.

A facile and cost-effective approach for hierarchically porous ceramics has been proposed firstly, using coal fly ash as the main powder while secondary aluminum dross (SAD) as curing and foaming agents. Benefited from the hydrolysis of AlN and Al in SAD, gas and lamellar aluminum hydroxide sol attached to the surface of unreacted particles were produced, meanwhile pH value and viscosity increased, realizing foaming and coagulation casting simultaneously to fabricate porous green body. The increase of SAD amount could contribute to more intensive formation of flaky aluminum hydroxide sol, enhancing mechanical strength of green body, which has high compressive strength of 1.03 MPa at a bulk density of 0.68 g/cm3. Porous mullite-based ceramics could be sintered at a relatively low temperature of 1200–1250 °C owing to alkali metal oxide and amorphous SiO2 in the solid wastes, which also help to form micropores on the pore wall due to partially sintering. Porous mullite-based ceramics possess hierarchical pores, bulk density of 1.00 g/cm3, open porosity of 66.15%, specific surface area of 2.24 m2/g and compressive strength of 9.14 MPa. Their removal rate of malachite green solution reaches 99.1% at a concentration of 100 mg/L and an adsorbent dosage of 100 g/L.

This is an essay in the field of mineral processing engineering. In this study, coal fly ash from a power plant in Guizhou was used as the research object. A series of test methods were comprehensively applied to the determination of the mineral composition and element content of coal fly ash. The results show that the main minerals in coal fly ash are mullite, quartz and iron minerals (5.46% magnetite and 4.77% hematite) , and the main chemical components are SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3, with the contents of 36.88%, 20.89% and 14.58%, respectively. In addition, the content of lithium is as high as 307 g/t, which shows a certain comprehensive utilization value. Particle size analysis shows that the cumulative yield of coal fly ash below 75 μm is as high as 83.4%, which indicates that the overall particles are finer. Lithium and iron are mainly concentrated in the -75 μm fraction. Reduction roasting was used to convert the weakly magnetic hematite in coal fly ash into strong magnetic magnetite, and then the wet magnetic separation method was used to remove iron from the fly ash. The results show that with the residual carbon in coal fly ash as the reducing agent, the roasting temperature 700 ℃, the roasting time 45 min, and the magnetic field strength 240 mT, and followed by a magnetic separation process of "one roughing-two sweeping", the iron removal rate reaches 63.27%, and the lithium recovery is 80.31%.

As a common byproduct of thermal power plants, coal fly ash (CFA) is often dumped in landfills, where it can cause environmental damage. As a result, in this work, porous construction bricks were made utilizing a byproduct of a thermal power plant, coal fly ash, and baking yeast to absorb carbon dioxide and dust. Yeast was utilized for pore formation, CFA detoxifying, and crack repair. The physical properties of prepared porous bricks are characterized using .X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal microscopy (CM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) According to the XRD analysis, the brick is made up of quartz, hematite, and mullite. The Porous Brick absorbed 36% of water and 2.5% of dust. The porous fly ash brick has demonstrated superior strength (17.5MPa) and load bearing capacity as compared to traditional bricks in compressive testing. For analysis of the fly ash bricks' ability to absorb carbon dioxide, a gas chromatograph equipped with a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) was utilized. A high adsorption capability of 94.69 percent of CO2 was found for the produced geopolymer bricks. The yeast involvement promote and facilitates the self-healing ability of the coal flay ash brick (CFB).

This study investigates the substitution of traditional burnt clay bricks (BCB), used since 7000 BCE, with environmentally friendly Fly Ash-Cement and Sand Composite Bricks (FCBs), utilizing industrial waste like Coal Fly Ash (CFA) from thermal power plants. The research encompasses two phases: the first involves experimental production of FCBs, while the second focuses on optimizing FCBs by varying CFA (50%, 60%, 70%), Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) content (9%–21%), and incorporating stone dust (SD) and fine sand. Comprehensive tests under normal and steam curing conditions, adhering to ASTM C 67-05 standards, include X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. Results indicate that steam curing enhances early strength, with an optimized mix (MD: 5S) achieving a compressive strength of 15.57 MPa, flexural strength of 0.67 MPa, water absorption rate of 20.08%, and initial rate of water absorption of 4.64 g/min per 30 in2, devoid of efflorescence. Notably, a 9% OPC and 50% CFA mix (MD: 1S) shows improved early strength of 4.95 MPa at 28 days. However, excessive CFA replacement (70%) with lesser cement content negatively impacts physio-mechanical properties. This research underscores the potential of FCBs as a sustainable and economically viable alternative to BCBs in the construction industry.

Designing an amine modified silica derived from coal fly ash (CFA) towards direct air CO2 capture (DAC) provides an economic way to manage increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration utilizing solid wastes. In this work, rod-like SBA-15 (SBA-15-R) and wheat-like SBA-15 (SBA-15-W) with distinct pore lengths are synthesized from CFA by controlling the synthesis conditions and then modified by PEI via the wet impregnation method. Their CO2 adsorption behaviors under sub-ambient conditions are investigated to explore their feasibility under aggressive conditions. The adsorbents with various silica morphologies exhibit distinctive CO2 adsorption performance under ambient and sub-ambient conditions. At 35°C under dry conditions, the CO2 adsorption capacity increases with amine loading. The CO2 adsorption capacity (qe) of SBA-15-W-PEI with long channels reaches the highest qe of 1.92 mmol/g with 70 wt.% PEI loading due to a large amount of strong chemisorption sites. Under the sub-ambient conditions (-20°C, 400 ppm), SBA-15-R-PEI30 with short channels having weaker CO2 diffusion resistance exhibits promising CO2 uptake of 0.83 mmol/g. These findings indicate that the ultra-dilute CO2 adsorption at ambient temperature requires an adsorbent with large amounts of adsorption sites, whereas the adsorbents for cold temperature application should reconcile amine loading with CO2 diffusion resistance inside pores. The co-adsorption of H2O and CO2 significantly improves CO2 capacity from 0.83 mmol/g and 1.92 mmol/g to 1.81 mmol/g and 3.48 mmol/g for SBA-15-R-PEI30 (-20°C, 400 ppm) and SBA-15-W-PEI70 (35°C, 400 ppm), respectively. Furthermore, the CFA derived SBA-15-PEI shows good cyclic stability during five consecutive TSA cycles. Preparing the amine silica adsorbents from coal fly ash potentially reduces the adsorbent cost of DAC devices. Moreover, the systematic exploration of amine silica adsorbents at a wide range of temperatures guides the design of high-performance CO2 adsorbents employed under various climatic conditions.

The continued increase in the global population has resulted in increased water demand for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes. These activities have led to the generation of high volumes of wastewater, which has an impact on water quality. Consequently, more practical solutions are needed to improve the current wastewater treatment systems. The use of improved ceramic membranes for wastewater treatment holds significant prospects for advancement in water treatment and sanitation. Hence, different studies have employed ceramic membranes in wastewater treatment and the search for low-cost and environmentally friendly starting materials has continued to engender research interests. This review focuses on the application of coal fly ash in membrane technology for wastewater treatment. The processes of membrane fabrication and the various limitations of the material. Several factors that influence the properties and performance of coal fly ash ceramic membranes in wastewater treatment are also presented. Some possible solutions to the limitations are also proposed, while cost analysis of coal fly ash-based membranes is explored to evaluate its potential for large-scale applications.

A large quantity of coal fly ash is generated worldwide from thermal power plants, causing a serious environmental threat owing to disposal and storage problems. In this work, for the first time, coal fly ash is converted into advanced and novel aerogel fibers and high-purity α-Al2O3. Silica–bacterial cellulose composite aerogel fibers (CAFs) were synthesized using an in situ sol-gel process under ambient pressure drying. Due to the unique "nanoscale interpenetrating network" (IPN) structure, the CAFs showed wonderful mechanical properties with an optimum tensile strength of 5.0 MPa at an ultimate elongation of 5.8%. Furthermore, CAFs with a high porosity (91.8%) and high specific surface area (588.75 m2/g) can inherit advanced features, including excellent thermal insulation, stability over a wide temperature range, and hydrophobicity (contact angle of approximately 144°). Additionally, Al2O3 was simultaneously extracted from the coal fly ash to ensure that the coal fly ash was fully exploited. Overall, low-cost woven CAFs fabrics are suitable for wearable applications and offer a great approach to comprehensively use coal fly ash to address environmental threats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oily sludge (OS), a hazardous waste that generated in the process of petroleum exploration, utilized as raw material in this study for preparation of high value-added glass-ceramics. The effect of CaF 2 addition and temperature on the melting behavior, crystallization mechanism, physical-chemical properties and heavy metals leaching of glass-ceramics was highlighted. The results indicated that the obtained parent glass demonstrated completely amorphous structure at 1200 °C when CaF 2 content was 4 wt%. The addition of CaF 2 improved crystallinity of glass-ceramics, which further improved the glass-ceramics properties. Comparing the properties of OC-1200-830 with OCF4-1030, it was observed that the density increased from 2.27 g/cm3 to 2.60 g/cm3, compressive strength increased from 56.43 MPa to 122.00 MPa, bending strength increased from 6.16 MPa to 11.41 MPa, acid resistance increased from 92.8% to 96.8%, alkali resistance increased from 94.6% to 98.2%, and water absorption reduced from 0.19% to 0.12%. The leaching concentrations of heavy metals in the glass-ceramics were below than the thresholds required in GB 5058.3–2007, China. The theoretical energy consumption of glass-ceramics melted at 1200 °C was 30.84%–41.37% lower than that melted at 1500 °C, which demonstrated that the glass-ceramics prepared in this study have cost advantages. Coal fly ash (CFA) is the primary solid waste generated by the coal-fired industry, and the predominant treatment methods include accumulation, landfill, and the production of cement-based building materials. However, the availability of these methods is relatively limited, and there is a need for technological upgrades. The extensive accumulation not only leads to environmental pollution but also has detrimental effects on human health. With its loose structure and main chemical components of Al2O3 and SiO2, CFA is conducive to the synthesis of promising nanoporous materials for applications in adsorption. The use of CFA as a raw material can significantly reduce preparation costs, improve comprehensive utilization efficiency, and manufacture more valuable products, aligning with the current strategy of sustainable development. Currently, the most widely used synthesis method is hydrothermal synthesis. This review focuses on the principles, methods, and influencing factors of synthesis, with particular emphasis on CFA-based mesoporous silica, zeolites, and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which have not been systematically reviewed previously. The quality of these synthesized nanoporous materials can be finely adjusted through the synthesis process. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each process will be made, and the impact of the synthesis conditions on the synthetic products will be analyzed. Additionally, a brief discussion on the latest research advances in their applications in adsorption will be provided. Finally, relevant challenges and issues have been proposed. Coal fly ash (CFA) is a waste that forms via coal combustion in thermal power stations. CFA consists of numerous components, whose recovery can address environmental and resource concerns associated with sustainable development. Most of the alumina (Al2O3) and rare-earth elements (REEs) in CFA are contained in the amorphous glassy mass and in the refractory mullite phase (3Al2O3·SiO2), which can be dissolved only using high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL). In this paper, the method of preactivation of CFA by treatment with a highly concentrated NaOH solution is used to increase the efficiency of Al and Sc extraction during HPAL. This method allows for the elimination of an inert aluminosilicate layer from the surface of mullite, transferring the REEs into an acid-soluble form. The Al and Sc extraction can reach 80% after HCl HPAL at T = 170 °C and a 90 min duration. According to the kinetic data, the dissolution of Al follows the surface chemical reaction and intraparticle diffusion shrinking core models in the initial and later stages of leaching, respectively. A high activation energy of 52.78 kJ mol−1 was observed at low temperatures, and a change in the mechanism occurred after 170 °C when the activation energy decreased to 26.34 kJ mol–1. The obtained activation energy value of 33.51 kJ mol−1 for Sc leaching indicates that diffusion has a strong influence at all studied temperatures. The residue was analysed by SEM-EDX, XRF, BET, and XRD methods in order to understand the mechanism of DCFA HPAL process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to propose a novel backpropagation neural network (BPNN) featured with sequential forward selection (SFS), named the BPNN_s model, to master the leaching characteristics of toxic elements (TEs) in coal fly ash (CFA). A total of 400 datasets and 54 features are involved to predict the fractions of TEs. The determination coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and variance accounted for (VAF) and Willmott's index (WI) are used to validate the BPNN_s, and its predictive performance is compared with the other three models, including the unified BPNN (BPNN_u), the adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) and the random forest (RF) models. The results indicate that the BPNN_s outperforms others in predicting the fractions of TEs, and feature selection is an imperative step for developing a model. Moreover, the features selected with SFS suggest that the influence of the element properties is more significant than that of the chemical properties as well as the concentration on predicting the fractions of TEs. Atomic weight is found to be the most critical feature in the prediction through a shapely additive explanations (SHAP) analysis. This study helps to assess the TEs' mobility rapidly and accurately and provides a foundation for obtaining insights into the relationship between the features and the fractions of TEs. Membrane technology is a promising method for gas separation. Due to its low energy consumption, environmental safety, and ease of operation, membrane separation has a distinct advantage over the cryogenic distillation conventionally used to capture light inert gases. For efficient gas recovery and purification, membrane materials should be highly selective, highly permeable, thermally stable, and low-cost. Currently, many studies are focused on the development of high-tech materials with specific properties using industrial waste. One of the promising waste products that can be recycled into membrane materials with improved microstructure is cenospheres—hollow aluminosilicate spherical particles that are formed in fly ash from coal combustion during power generation. For this purpose, based on narrow fractions of fly ash cenospheres containing single-ring and network structure globules, silicate glass/mullite composites were prepared, characterized, and tested for helium–neon mixture separation. The results indicate that the fragmented structure of the cenosphere shells with areas enriched in SiO2 without modifier oxides, formed due to the crystallization of defective phases of mullite, quartz, cristobalite, and anorthite, significantly facilitates the gas transport process. The permeability coefficients He and Ne exceed similar values for silicate glasses; the selectivity corresponds to a high level even at a high temperature: αHe/Ne—22 and 174 at 280 °C.
