A new highly effective sizing reagent based on grafted collagen copolymers has been proposed for cotton yarn. The copolymers were synthesized by reacting an aqueous solution of collagen with acrylic monomers--acrylic, matacrylic acids, and their amides in the presence of potassium persulfate. Based on Scanning electron microscopy--Energy dispersive (SEM-EDS) analysis data, the composition of the copolymers was determined. Unsaturated acids are more actively grafted onto collagen than their amides. When a polymer film is formed from a solution of a collagen copolymer with (meth)acrylic acid, microcracks appear on the surface of the sample; microcracks are absent in films of copolymers with (meth)acrylamide. Films of copolymers, especially methacrylamide, are quite flexible and contribute to a significant improvement in the properties of the yarn. The tensile strength of yarn sized with copolymers increases by 20%-65% compared to unsized yarn, and by 13%--38% compared to yarn sized with a starch solution. At the same time, the relative tensile elongation of the experimental yarn improves by 14%-58%, while this property of starch-size yarn deteriorates by 14%-22% compared to unsized yarn. The complete removal of graft copolymers from the surface of the yarn in the process of biochemical desizing using the enzyme protease is shown. [Display omitted] Hydrogel microneedle patches have emerged as promising platforms for painless, minimally invasive, safe, and portable transdermal drug administration. However, the conventional mold-based fabrication processes and inherent single-functionality of such microneedles present significant hurdles to broader implementation. Herein, we have developed a novel approach utilizing a precursor solution of robust nanocomposite hydrogels to formulate photo-printable inks suitable for the direct 3D printing of high-precision, triple-responsive hydrogel microneedle patches through digital light processing (DLP) technology. The ink formulation comprises four functionally diverse monomers including 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate, N -isopropylacrylamide, acrylic acid, and acrylamide, which were crosslinked by aluminum hydroxide nanoparticles (AH NPs) acting as both reinforcing agents and crosslinking centers. This results in the formation of a nanocomposite hydrogel characterized by exceptional mechanical strength, an essential attribute for the 3D printing of hydrogel microneeedle patches. Furthermore, this innovative 3D printing strategy facilitates facile customization of microneedle geometry and patch dimensions. As a proof-of-concept, we employed the fabricated hydrogel microneedles for transdermal delivery of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Importantly, these hydrogel microneedles displayed no cytotoxic effects and exhibited triple sensitivity to pH, temperature and glucose levels, thereby enabling more precise on-demand drug delivery. Poly(eutectic) elastomers, as an emerging category of flexible electronic materials, have garnered growing interest for their cost-effectiveness, non-volatility, and biocompatibility. Nonetheless, they encounter challenges including limited functionalities, sensitivity, durability, and mechanical properties. This study involved synthesizing various MXene-doped poly(eutectic) elastomers using robust acrylamide and soft acrylic acid as organic monomers, minor MXene nanosheets as inorganic fillers and physical crosslinkers, and a rapid in-situ photopolymerization method within 2 min. Owing to the synergistic effect of thermodynamic self-assembly, high-density hydrogen bonding, and cation-dipole interactions in the matrix networks, the resulting non-covalently crosslinked elastomers exhibited remarkable mechanical strength (up to ∼ 16.2 MPa) and impressive tensile properties (nearly 700 %), along with rapid electrical self-healing (within 0.046 s) and the ability to withstand loads up to 2500 times their weight following self-healing without fracturing. Notably, these elastomers also demonstrated excellent microstrain (1 %–10 %) sensitivity with a gauge factor of 2.02, wide temperature tolerance (−20 °C ∼ 60 °C), outstanding harsh temperature durability (−20 °C) exceeding 22,000 cycles, and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, these elastomers-assembled strain sensors displayed real-time and rapid response in human motion detection and wireless signal transmission, presenting a promising approach for designing functionally integrated elastomeric materials. In this work, MoVTeNbOx catalysts was doped with Cr by using spray drying method. The effect of Cr doping on the crystalline phase, physicochemical properties, and catalytic performance of selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid of MoVTeNbOx was investigated. The results showed that the samples as-prepared by spray drying method present unique spherical morphology stacked by rod particles. In addition, Cr doping induced a change in the mesopore structure formed by rod stacking, reducing the pore radius of the catalysts from 5-10 nm to 2-4 nm. Meanwhile, Cr doping dramatically reduced the average particle size of MoVTeNbOx catalysts, decreasing the rod cross-section diameter of catalysts from 234.21 to 134.96 nm and the rod length from 1.096 μm to 485.71 nm, which significantly increased the amount of (001) active crystalline plane. Moreover, an appropriate amount of Cr doping increased the number of reducible species in the catalyst and reduced its acidity. At the same time, the surface V5+ content of the catalyst was increased from 35.8% to 72.6%. Cr-doped MoVTeNbOx with mesoporous structure showed excellent performance in catalyzing selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid reaction. Among them, S-3 sample (V: Cr = 1:0.015) increased the selectivity and yield to acrylic acid from 67.5% to 84.3% and from 26.4% to 43.2%, respectively, at reaction temperature of 380 °C. New self‐healing resin composites with tertiary amine microcapsules enhance the mechanical performance of dental restorations. However, a higher concentration of dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO) must be added to the composite to react with the core material when the microcapsules rupture, reducing the shelf life of dental materials due to their reactivity. As a result, one approach to reducing the amount of BPO dissolved in dental resin is to microencapsulate it. Thus, this manuscript described the encapsulation of BPO in poly(urea‐formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules (MC) and investigated its effect on the flexural strength of BisGMA/TEGDMA composites. To synthesize hollow MC, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was tested as a continuous phase viscosity modifier. The MC were then infiltrated with BPO dissolved in linseed oil as core materials. PAA in continuous phase increased MC diameter due to improved air bubble stability. BPO dissolved in linseed oil was successfully infiltrated into empty PUF MC, causing the MC shell wall to expand. The dental resin had adequate adhesion to the PUF shell, which ruptured under induced stress. Thus, the MC filled with BPO as a healing agent has the potential to reduce the amount of BPO that is typically dissolved in the monomeric phase of dental materials, which can increase the shelf life of self‐healing dental materials. This study investigated the adsorption of Oxytetracycline (OTC) from pharmaceutical wastewater using a kappa carrageenan based hydrogel (KPB). The aim of the present study was to explore the potential of KPB for long-term pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. A sustainable adsorbent was developed to address oxytetracycline (OTC) contamination. The hydrogel's structural and adsorption characteristics were examined using various techniques like Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and kinetic models. The results revealed considerable changes in the vibrational modes and adsorption bands of the hydrogel, suggesting the effective functionalization of Bentonite nano-clay. Kappa carrageenan based hydrogel achieved the maximum removal (98.5%) of OTC at concerntration of 40 mg/L, pH 8, cotact time of 140 min and adsorbent dose of 0.1 g (KPB-3). Adsorption of OTC increased up to 99% with increasing initial concentrations. The study achieved 95% adsorption capacity for OTC using a KPB film at a concentration of 20 mg/L and a 0.1 g adsorbent dose within 60 min. It also revealed that chemisorptions processes outperform physical adsorption. The Pseudo-Second-Order model, which emphasized the importance of chemical adsorption in the removal process, is better suited to represent the adsorption behavior. Excellent matches were found that R2 = 0.99 for KPB-3, R2 = 0.984 for KPB-2 and R2 = 0.989 for KPB-1 indicated strong chemical bonding interactions. Statisctical analysis (ANOVA) was performed using SPSS (version 25) and it was found that pH and concentration had significant influence on OTC adsorption by the hydrogel, with p-values less than 0.05. The study identified that a Kappa carrageenan-based hydrogel with bentonite nano-clay and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can efficiently remove OTC from pharmaceutical effluent, with a p-value of 0.054, but weak positive linear associations with pH, temperature, and contact time. The corrosion resistance of cement–water-glass dual-liquid slurry is poor. Improving its material properties is necessary. In this study, we examined the influence of water-based lotions on the fluidity, gelling time, and mechanical properties of a cement–water-glass dual-liquid slurry based on the mix proportion of the dual-liquid slurry commonly used in construction. The mixture ratio of a C-S (cement–water-glass slurry) dual-liquid slurry was adjusted by introducing a waterborne polyurethane lotion and a waterborne acrylic lotion to modify the traditional C-S dual-liquid slurry material. When acrylic acid is used as a modifying polymer at a dosage of 7.5%, the flowability and gelation time of the dual-liquid slurry are excellent, the compressive strength of the stone body decreases slightly, the flexural strength is improved to a certain extent, and the stone body's crack resistance during water loss is also enhanced. In this paper, N-vinylpyrrolidone was copolymerized with acrylic acid and itaconic acid by free radical polymerization, and a series of polyacrylic acid-co-itaconic acid-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone (PAIN) dispersants with different pyrrolidone ligand contents were synthesized and characterized. Then, the cobalt blue nano-pigment slurry (20 wt%) was prepared through a water-based grinding method, and the optimum grinding technology was explored and determined as follows: PAIN2 as a dispersant, a dispersant dosage of 10 wt%, and a grinding time of 480 min. According to this optimum grinding technology, the prepared pigment slurry had a significantly decreased agglomeration, the D90 of which was 82 nm, and separately increased to 130 nm and 150 nm after heat storage for 3 and 7 days, exhibiting excellent heat storage stability. Additionally, its TSI value was also the lowest (1.9%), indicating good dispersion stability. The QCM and adorption capacity measuring results showed PAIN2 had a larger adsorption capacity, and the formed adsorption layer had a higher rigidity and was not easy to fall off. This was caused by both the interaction of carboxyl groups and the pyrrolidone ligand (strong coordination interaction) in PAIN2 with cobalt blue. Photocatalytic membranes are crucial in addressing membrane fouling issues. However, the grafting amount of the catalyst on the membrane often becomes a key factor in restricting the membrane's self-cleaning capability. To address the challenge, this manuscript proposes a method for solving membrane fouling, featuring high grafting rates of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and acrylic acid (AA), significant contaminant degradation capability, and reusability. A highly photocatalytic self-cleaning microfiltration membrane made of polyvinylidene fluoride bismuth oxide and acrylic acid (PVDF-g-BA) was prepared by attaching nano Bi2O3 and acrylic acid onto the polyvinylidene fluoride membrane through adsorption/deposition and UV grafting polymerization. Compared with pure membranes and pure acrylic grafted membranes (PVDF-g-AA), the modified membrane grafted with 0.5% bismuth oxide not only improves the grafting rate and filtration performance, but also has higher self-cleaning ability. Furthermore, the degradation effect of this membrane on the organic dye methyl violet 2B under visible light irradiation is very significant, with a degradation rate reaching 90% and almost complete degradation after 12 h. Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a high-molecular-weight polymer with extensive applications. However, the inefficient natural degradation of PAM results in environmental accumulation of the polymer. Biodegradation is an environmentally friendly approach in the field of PAM treatment. The first phase of PAM biodegradation is the deamination of PAM, forming the product poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The second phase of PAM biodegradation involves the cleavage of PAA into small molecules, which is a crucial step in the degradation pathway of PAM. However, the enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of PAA and the molecular mechanism remain unclear. Here, a novel monooxygenase PCX02514 is identified as the key enzyme for PAA degradation. Through biochemical experiments, the monooxygenase PCX02514 oxidizes PAA with the participation of NADPH, causing the cleavage of carbon chains and a decrease in the molecular weight of PAA. In addition, the crystal structure of the monooxygenase PCX02514 is solved at a resolution of 1.97 Å. The active pocket is in a long cavity that extends from the C-terminus of the TIM barrel to the protein surface and exhibits positive electrostatic potential, thereby causing the migration of oxygen-negative ions into the active pocket and facilitating the reaction between the substrates and monooxygenase PCX02514. Moreover, Arg10-Arg125-Ser186-Arg187-His253 are proposed as potential active sites in monooxygenase PCX02514. In the present study, the novel environmental-friendly adsorbent (PAA-g-CMCDAS) obtained from carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), dialdehyde starch (DAS) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) is used for removing silver ion. The adsorbent characterized by XRD, SEM, TGA, BET and FTIR, was evaluated for removal of silver ion from aqueous solution. The adsorption process of silver ions conformed to Langmuir isotherm and the second-order kinetic mode. The maximum adsorption capacity for silver ions was 404.77 mg·g−1, and the maximum removal efficiency was 95.05%. Also, the reusability and selectivity of PAA-g-CMCDAS was investigated, and the adsorption amount was still 388.77 mg·g−1 and the removal efficiency was up to 91.29% after five times recycle; the removal efficiency of silver ions in mixed metal ions solution was 24.24% with the total removal efficiency of mixed metal ions 58%. Dietary methane (CH 4) mitigation is in some cases associated with an increased hydrogen (H 2) emission. The objective of the present study was to investigate the acute and short-term effects of acceptors for H 2 (fumaric acid, acrylic acid, or phloroglucinol) supplemented via pulse-dosing to dairy cows fed CH 4 mitigating diets (using nitrate or 3-nitrooxypropanol), on gas exchange, rumen gas, and VFA composition. For this purpose, 2 individual 4 × 4 Latin square experiments were conducted with 4 periods of 3 d (nitrate supplementation) and 7 d (3-nitrooxypropanol supplementation), respectively. In each study, 4 rumen-cannulated Danish Holstein cows were used. Each additive for CH 4 mitigation was included in the ad libitum–fed diet within the 2 experiments (exp. 1 and exp. 2), to which the cows were adapted for at least 14 d. Acceptors for H 2 were administered twice daily in equal portions through the rumen fistula immediately after feeding of the individual cow. In exp. 1 (nitrate), the treatments were CON-1 (no H 2 -acceptor), FUM-1 (fumaric acid), ACR-1 (acrylic acid), and FUM+ACR-1 (50% FUM-1 + 50% ACR-1). In exp. 2 (3-nitrooxypropanol), the 3 treatments, CON-2, FUM-2, and ACR-2, were similar to CON-1, FUM-1 and ACR-1 treatments, however the fourth treatment was PHL-2 (phloroglucinol). Gas exchanges were measured in respiration chambers, and samples of rumen liquid and headspace gas were taken in time series relative to feeding and dosing on specific days. Headspace gas was analyzed for gas composition, and rumen liquid was analyzed for VFA composition and dissolved gas concentrations. Headspace gas composition and dissolved gas concentration were only measured in exp. 2. Dry matter intake was reduced upon acrylic acid supplementation. There were no significant effects of any treatments in any experiments on H 2 emission, except for a decrease in hourly H 2 emission rate (g/h) at 1 h after feeding in both experiments. In exp. 2, H 2 headspace proportions increased with ACR-2 supplementation, whereas dissolved concentrations were unaffected. In exp. 1, cows on ACR-1 increased propionate proportion at 1 h after feeding. In exp. 2, both FUM-2 and ACR-2 increased rumen propionate proportion in the hours after feeding and dosing. There was no effect on rumen acetate for cows on PHL-2. There was a strong positive correlation between rumen dissolved CH 4 and headspace CH 4 (r = 0.84), whereas the equivalent correlation was weaker for H 2 (r = 0.41). For the relationship between dissolved concentrations and emissions of CH 4 and H 2 , there was a moderate positive correlation for CH 4 (r = 0.54), whereas it was weak for H 2 (r = 0.28) with zero slope. In conclusion, the results suggested that fumaric acid and acrylic acid to some extent was reduced to propionate without associative effects on measures for H 2 redirection. Furthermore, phloroglucinol seemed not to be metabolized in the rumen in the present study, because no effects on rumen acetate or measures of H 2 were observed. Comblike polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCs) have been widely used as construction and building materials by means of high fluidity and fine dispersibility via electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. The conventional PCs are usually synthesized by free radical polymerization, which limit to understand and even distort the structure-property relationship due to the random molecular structure and the broad polydispersity. In this work, polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers of acrylic acid (AA) and ethylene glycol monovinyl PEG (EPEG) with controlled structure were prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The resultant copolymers (denoted as EPCs) were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and GPC spectroscopy. The effect of actual acid/ether (AA/EPEG) ratio on the adsorption capacity and dispersion ability of EPCs in cement paste were deeply investigated. These results demonstrate that the dispersibility of EPCs with controlled molecular weights and comparatively narrow polydispersity indexes (PDI=1.2–1.4) strongly depends on the acid/ether ratio. With an increase of the feed molar ratio of AA/EPEG from 4∶1 to 8∶1 , the molecular weight and their distribution of EPCs increases accordingly. In addition, the adsorption capacity and dispersion property of EPCs to cement are densely related to the molecular structure and composition and superior to that of conventional PC analogues. A possible mechanism was proposed that EPCs can act uniformly on the surface of cement particles due to the well-defined molecular structure and well-distributed molecular weight, which is different from the conventional PCs, which will offer the fundamentals of design and synthesis for polycarboxylate superplasticizers with controlled structures. A new type of UV-curable pressure-sensitive adhesive containing Si atoms (Si-PSAs) was prepared by a solution-free UV-initiated telomerization process of n-butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, and 4-acrylooxybenzophenone using triethylsilane (TES) as a telogen and an acylphosphine oxide (APO) as a radical photoinitiator. Selected commercial adhesion promoters were tested as additives in the formulation of adhesive compositions, i.e., (i) an organic copolymer with polar groups (carboxyl and hydroxyl); (ii) a hydroxymetal-organic compound; and (iii) a quaternary ammonium salt and (iv) a chlorinated polyolefin. No fillers, crosslinking agents, or photoinitiators were used in the adhesive compositions. NMR techniques confirmed the incorporation of silicon atoms into the polyacrylate structure. The influence of adhesion promoters on the kinetics of the UV-crosslinking process of Si-PSAs was investigated by a photo-DSC technique. The obtained Si-PSAs were characterized by adhesion (to steel, glass, PMMA, and PE), tack, and cohesion at 20 °C. Finally, the wetting angle of Si-PSAs with water was checked and their thermal stability was proved (TGA). Unexpectedly, the quaternary ammonium salt had the most favorable effect on improving the thermal stability of Si-PSAs (302 °C) and adhesion to glass and PMMA. This study investigates the crosslinking dynamics and swelling properties of pH-responsive poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels. These hydrogels feature denser crosslinked networks compared to PEG single network (SN) hydrogels. Fabrication involved a two-step UV curing process: First, forming PEG-SN hydrogels using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) through UV-induced free radical polymerization and crosslinking reactions, then immersing them in PAA solutions with two different molar ratios of acrylic acid (AA) monomer and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) crosslinker. A subsequent UV curing step created PAA networks within the pre-fabricated PEG hydrogels. The incorporation of AA with ionizable functional groups imparted pH sensitivity to the hydrogels, allowing the swelling ratio to respond to environmental pH changes. Rheological analysis showed that PEG/PAA IPN hydrogels had a higher storage modulus (G′) than PEG-SN hydrogels, with PEG/PAA-IPN5 exhibiting the highest modulus. Thermal analysis via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated increased thermal stability for PEG/PAA-IPN5 compared to PEG/PAA-IPN1, due to higher crosslinking density from increased PEGDMA content. Consistent with the storage modulus trend, PEG/PAA-IPN hydrogels demonstrated superior mechanical properties compared to PEG-SN hydrogels. The tighter network structure led to reduced water uptake and a higher gel modulus in swollen IPN hydrogels, attributed to the increased density of active network strands. Below the pKa (4.3) of acrylic acid, hydrogen bonds between PEG and PAA chains caused the IPN hydrogels to contract. Above the pKa, ionization of PAA chains induced electrostatic repulsion and osmotic forces, increasing water absorption. Adjusting the crosslinking density of the PAA network enabled fine-tuning of the IPN hydrogels' properties, allowing comprehensive comparison of single network and IPN characteristics. The indigo dye found in wastewater from printing and dyeing processes is potentially carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, making it a serious threat to the health of animals, plants, and humans. Motivated by the growing need to remove indigo from wastewater, this study prepared novel fiber absorbents using melt-blow polypropylene (PP) melt as a matrix, as well as acrylic acid (AA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) as functional monomers. The modification conditions were studied to optimize the double-initiation, continuous-suspension grafting process, and then functional fibers were prepared by melt-blown spinning the modified PP. The results showed that the optimum modification conditions were as follows: a 3.5 wt% interfacial agent, 8 mg/L of dispersant, 80% monomer content, a 0.8 mass ratio of AA to MAH, a 1000 r/min stir speed, 3.5 wt% initiator DBPH grafting at 130 °C for 3 h, and 1 wt% initiator BPO grafting at 90 °C for 2 h. The highest grafting rate of the PP-g-AA-MAH was 31.2%, and the infrared spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis showed that AA and MAH were successfully grafted onto PP fiber. This modification strategy also made the fibers more hydrophilic. The adsorption capacity of the PP-g-AA-MAH fibers was highly dependent on pH, and the highest indigo adsorption capacity was 110.43 mg/g at pH 7. The fiber adsorption capacity for indigo increased rapidly before plateauing with increasing time or indigo concentration, and the experimental data were well described in a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. Most impressively, the modified fiber adsorption capacity for indigo remained as high as 91.22 mg/g after eight regeneration and reuse cycles. In summary, the PP-g-AA-MAH fibers, with excellent adsorption-desorption characteristics, could be readily regenerated and reused, and they are a promising material for the removal of indigo from wastewater. The terpolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) with acrylic acid and triethylene glycol methacrylate were synthesized with more than 90% yield by radical copolymerization in ethanol from monomeric mixtures of different molar composition (98:2:2, 95:5: 2 and 98:2:5) and their monomer composition, absolute molecular masses and hydrodynamic radii in aqueous media were determined. Using the MTT test, these terpolymers were established to be low toxic for non-tumor Vero cells and HeLa tumor cells. Polymer compositions of hydrophobic dye methyl pheophorbide a (MPP) based on studied terpolymers and linear polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were obtained and characterized in water solution. Quantum-chemical modeling of the MPP-copolymer structures was conducted, and the possibility of hydrogen bond formation between terpolymer units and the MPP molecule was shown. Using fluorescence microscopy, the accumulation and distribution of polymer particles in non-tumor (FetMSC) and tumor (HeLa) cells was studied, and an increase in the accumulation of MPP with both types of particles was found. Microplastic (MP) pollution has been observed in various ecosystems as a result of the rapid increase in plastic production over the past half-century. Nevertheless, the extent of MP pollution in different ecosystems, particularly in freshwater ecosystems, has not been well-studied, and there are limited investigations on this particular topic, specifically in Türkiye. Here, we quantify the occurrence and distribution of MPs in surface water samples collected from Topçu Pond (Türkiye) for the first time. Water samples were collected at five stations and filtered (30 L for each station) through stacked stainless steel sieves (5 mm, 328 µm, and 61 µm mesh size) with a diameter of 30 cm. The abundance, size, color, shape, and type of collected debris samples were analyzed after the wet peroxide oxidation process. MP particles were observed in all samples at an average abundance of 2.4 MPs/L. The most abundant MP size class and type were 0–999 µm and fiber respectively. On the other hand, prevalent colors were black and colorless in general. According to the Raman analysis results, the identified MP derivatives were polypropylene (40%), polyamide (30%), ethylene acrylic acid (20%), and polyvinylchloride (10%). Moreover, the pollution load index (PLI) index was used to determine the pollution status. PLI values were determined as 1.91 at station S1, 1.73 at station S2, 1.31 at station S3, 1 at station S4 and 1.24 at station S5. The PLI value determined for the overall pond was 1.4. The results of this research show that MP pollution is present in Topçu Pond and contributes to the expanding literature on MP pollution in pond ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pH- and thermo-responsive behavior of polymeric hydrogels M C − c o − M A have been studied in detail using dynamic light scattering D L S , scanning electron microscopy   S E M , nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and rheology to evaluate the conformational changes, swelling–shrinkage, stability, the ability to flow and the diffusion process of nanoparticles at several temperatures. Furthermore, polymeric systems functionalized with acrylic acid M C and acrylamide M A were subjected to a titration process with a calcium chloride C a C l 2 solution to analyze its effect on the average particle diameter   D z , polymer structure and the intra- and intermolecular interactions in order to provide a responsive polymer network that can be used as a possible nanocarrier for drug delivery with several benefits. The results confirmed that the structural changes in the sensitive hydrogels are highly dependent on the corresponding critical solution temperature C S T of the carboxylic (–COOH) and amide (–CONH2) functional groups and the influence of calcium ions C a 2 + on the formation or breaking of hydrogen bonds, as well as the decrease in electrostatic repulsions generated between the polymer chains contributing to a particle agglomeration phenomenon. The temperature leads to a re-arrangement of the polymer chains, affecting the viscoelastic properties of the hydrogels. In addition, the diffusion coefficients D of nanoparticles were evaluated, showing a closeness among with the morphology, shape, size and temperature, resulting in slower diffusions for larger particles size and, conversely, the diffusion in the medium increasing as the polymer size is reduced. Therefore, the hydrogels exhibited a remarkable response to pH and temperature variations in the environment. During this research, the functionality and behavior of the polymeric nanoparticles were observed under different analysis conditions, which revealed notable structural changes and further demonstrated the nanoparticles promising high potential for drug delivery applications. In recent years, many researchers have focused on designing hydrogels with specific functional groups that exhibit high affinity for various contaminants, such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, pathogens, or nutrients, or environmental parameters. Novel approaches, including cross-linking strategies and the use of nanomaterials, have been employed to enhance the structural integrity and performance of the desired hydrogels. The evolution of these hydrogels is further highlighted, with an emphasis on fine-tuning features, including water absorption capacity, environmental pollutant/factor sensing and selectivity, and recyclability. Furthermore, this review investigates the emerging topic of stimuli-responsive smart hydrogels, underscoring their potential in both sorption and detection of water pollutants. By critically assessing a wide range of studies, this review not only synthesizes existing knowledge, but also identifies advantages and limitations, and describes future research directions in the field of chemically engineered hydrogels for water purification and monitoring with a low environmental impact as an important resource for chemists and multidisciplinary researchers, leading to improvements in sustainable water management technology. A microwave technique was used to prepare a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) by grafting two hydrophilic monomers onto a polysaccharide substrate. The monomers used were acrylic acid (AA) or acrylamide (AM) and were grafted onto a pullulan (PUL) substrate to form PUL-g-AA (SAP1) and PUL-g-AM (SAP2), respectively. The monomers (AM/AA) were grafted together onto a PUL substrate to form PUL-g-(AM/AA) (SAP3). Grafting parameters such as grafting efficiency with the percentage, the conversion of monomer into polymer, gel content, water retention, water adsorption capacity, and swelling kinetics were determined. Additionally, the effect of environmental pH (2, 4, 7, 9, and 12) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) surfactant was evaluated, where 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mM of SDBS was added to form SAP4 to SAP8. The FTIR results show that AM was grafted onto PUL through an aliphatic C-N bond, while AA grafting occurred through a single C-C bond. The grafting efficiency with AM was higher than with AA, as well as showing a superior gel content. Water absorbance capacity and water retention increased with the grafting of AA and AM together for SAP3. The highest absorbent capacity, water retention, gel content, and grafting parameters values were obtained with a 3 mM SDBS content and a pH of 7. The swelling kinetics showed that the increases in the theoretical and experimental swelling equilibriums were 72% and 82%, respectively, for SAP6 compared to the values of these parameters for SAP3. The water absorption capacity of the hydrogel increases upon increasing the pH to 7 and then gradually decreases. XRD demonstrated the improved crystallinity and crystalline size of the hydrogel after grafting polymerization of AM/AA onto PUL, in addition to enhanced thermal stability. In this study, a viscosity-reducing polycarboxylic acid superplasticizer (VRPCE) was synthesized using methylallyl polyoxyethylene ether (HPEG), acrylic acid (AA), and maltodextrin maleic acid monoester (MDMA) as the main raw materials. The influences of the VRPCE on the microscopic properties of cement paste were studied by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), total organic carbon test (TOC), zeta potential, laser particle size analysis, XRD, MIP, TG, and SEM. Finally, the effects of the VRPCE on the macroscopic properties of cement mortar were evaluated through flow time, slump flow, compressive strength, shrinkage, and creep. The results showed that the VRPCE can improve the hydration degree of the cement, optimize the pore structure, increase the porosity, improve the fluidity, compressive strength, and creep, and decrease the shrinkage resistance of the cement mortar. Electrokinetic convection-enhanced delivery (ECED) utilizes an external electric field to drive the delivery of molecules and bioactive substances to local regions of the brain through electroosmosis and electrophoresis, without the need for an applied pressure. We characterize the implementation of ECED to direct a neutrally charged fluorophore (3 kDa) from a doped biocompatible acrylic acid/acrylamide hydrogel placed on the cortical surface. We compare fluorophore infusion profiles using ECED (time = 30 min, current = 50 µA) and diffusion-only control trials, for ex vivo (N = 18) and in vivo (N = 12) experiments. The linear intensity profile of infusion to the brain is significantly higher in ECED compared to control trials, both for in vivo and ex vivo. The linear distance of infusion, area of infusion, and the displacement of peak fluorescence intensity along the direction of infusion in ECED trials compared to control trials are significantly larger for in vivo trials, but not for ex vivo trials. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of ECED to direct a solute from a surface hydrogel towards inside the brain parenchyma based predominantly on the electroosmotic vector. Cadmium is a highly toxic metal, and its presence can have adverse effects on both human health and aquatic ecosystems. The efficient removal of cadmium from wastewater is therefore of crucial importance, but traditional methods have proved to be inadequate. Thus, technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing cadmium, including adsorption, have been developed. The aim of this study was the preparation of a polymeric material by the grafting reaction of κ-carrageenan and its use as an adsorbent for cadmium removal. This was performed to study the removal capacity of cadmium ions in synthetic solutions, as well as the effects of pH and ions on adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and reusability. Additionally, the disinfectant potential of the solution was evaluated for the inactivation of total coliforms and E. coli in river water. The best adsorption capacity was 75.52 ± 1.325 mg g−1, with the kinetics described by the pseudo-second order model. Maximum adsorption capacity (127.6 ± 1.833 mg g−1) and RL (0.0113) were determined using the Langmuir model, the Freundlich model was the one that best fits the experimental data and indicated cooperative adsorption, and the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm was used to obtain the adsorption energy and identify that it is physical. The presence of ions K+, Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in a concentration of 0.5% decreased the adsorption capacity, and that at pH 2.0, the adsorption capacity was drastically reduced. This study aimed to develop composite hydrogels with exceptional piezoelectric properties and pressure sensitivity. To achieve the objective, this study created a deep eutectic solvent (DES) by mixing choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM), and acrylic acid (AA). Barium titanate nanoparticles (BTNPs) were incorporated as fillers into the deep eutectic solvents (DES) to synthesize the composite hydrogels using frontal polymerization (FP). The mechanical and piezoelectric properties of the resulting composite hydrogels were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study found that the BTNPs/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical and piezoelectric properties. This is attributed to the high dielectric constant of BTNPs and the electrode polarization phenomenon when subjected to pressure. With a BTNPs content of 0.6 wt%, the maximum compressive strength increased by 3.68 times compared with the hydrogel without added BTNPs. Moreover, increasing the BTNPs content to 0.6 wt% resulted in a 1.48 times increase in generated voltage under the same pressure, compared with the hydrogel with only 0.2 wt% BTNPs. The need to create safe materials for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications has become a significant driving force for the development of new systems. Therefore, a chitosan-coated copolymer of itaconic acid, acrylic acid, and N-vinyl caprolactam (IT-AA-NVC) was prepared by radical polymerization and subsequent coating via nanoprecipitation to give a system capable of sustained delivery of melatonin. Although melatonin brings undoubted benefits to the human body, aspects of the optimal dose, route, and time of administration for the obtaining of suitable treatment outcomes remain under discussion. The entrapment of melatonin in biocompatible polymeric systems can prevent its oxidation, decrease its toxicity, and provide an increased half-life, resulting in an enhanced pharmacokinetic profile with improved patient compliance. The structures of the biopolymer and conjugate were proven by FTIR, thermal properties were tested by DSC, and the morphologies were followed by SEM. The loading efficiency and in vitro release profile were studied by means of HPLC, and a delayed release profile with an initial burst was obtained. The potential systemic toxicity of the formulation was studied in vivo; a mild hepatotoxicity was observed following administration of the melatonin-loaded formulation to mice, both by histopathology and blood clinical biochemistry. In our study, using chromatographic techniques, we isolated three bioactive compounds, which were structurally elucidated as (E)-2-(3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)acrylamido)-N-methylbenzamide (1), 4-Hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid (2), and (E)-2-Cyano-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acrylic acid (3), using spectroscopic methods. The anti-melanogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties were evaluated in vitro by measuring the activity of pharmacological targets including tyrosinase, melanin, NF-κB, hyaluronidase, elastase, collagenase, and Nrf2. Our results show that compound 1 is the most active with IC50 values of 14.19 μM (tyrosinase inhibition), 22.24 μM (melanin inhibition), 9.82–12.72 μM (NF-κB inhibition), 79.71 μM (hyaluronidase inhibition), 80.13 μM (elastase inhibition), 76.59 μM (collagenase inhibition), and 116–385 nM (Nrf2 activation) in the THP-1, HEK001, WS1, and HMCB cells. These findings underscore the promising profiles of the aqueous extract of R. urticifolius at safe cytotoxic concentrations. Additionally, we report, for the first time, the isolation and characterisation of these nitrogenous compounds in the R. urticifolius species. Finally, compound 1, isolated from R. urticifolius, is a promising candidate for the development of more effective and safer compounds for diseases related to skin pigmentation, protection against inflammation, and oxidative stress. Manufacturing thin‐film components is crucial for achieving high‐efficiency and high‐power thermal batteries (TBs). However, developing binders with low‐gas production at the operating temperature range of TBs (400–550 °C) has proven to be a significant challenge. Here, we report the use of acrylic acid derivative terpolymer (LA136D) as a low‐volatile binder for thin‐film cathode fabrication and studied the chain scission and chemical bond‐breaking mechanisms in pyrolysis. It is shown LA136D defers to random‐chain scission and cross‐linking chain scission mechanisms, which gifts it with a low proportion of volatile products (ψ, ψ = 39.2 wt%) at even up to 550 °C, well below those of the conventional PVDF (77.6 wt%) and SBR (99.2 wt%) binders. Surprisingly, LA136D contributes to constructing a thermal shock‐resistant cathode due to the step‐by‐step bond‐breaking process. This is beneficial for the overall performance of TBs. In discharging test, the thin‐film cathodes exhibited a remarkable 440% reduction in polarization and 300% enhancement in the utilization efficiency of cathode materials, while with just a slight increase of 0.05 MPa in gas pressure compared with traditional "thick‐film" cathode. Our work highlights the potential of LA136D as a low‐volatile binder for thin‐film cathodes and shows the feasibility of manufacturing high‐efficiency and high‐power TBs through polymer molecule engineering. High‐barrier performance, especially under extreme working conditions, is the key to replacing other types of packaging materials with paper‐based materials. In this paper, two biomass‐based polymers, sodium alginate (SA), and chitosan, were used to form a barrier coating with silicone emulsions to prepare a high‐performance paper‐based barrier material. By double coating, the water and oilproof functions were superimposed. The two prepared coated papers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy analysis, contact angle test, and scanning electron microscopy analysis, while their water resistance, oil resistance, thermal oil resistance, and thermal stability were tested. The water and oil repellency were achieved by double coating. The Cobb value of the chitosan‐silicone emulsion‐coated paper reached 5.3 g/m2, with a Kit grade of Level 12, and could block the penetration of castor oil at 80°C within 24 h. The Cobb value of the sodium alginate‐silicone emulsion‐coated paper was 41.6 g/m2, much higher than that of the uncoated paper, with a Kit grade of up to Level 10, which could slow down the rate of castor oil penetration at 80°C within 24 h. The test results showed that there was no chemical reaction between the paper‐based coatings, and the coated paper surface had good film formation, while the double coating method increased the thermal decomposition temperature of the overall barrier coating, effectively improving the thermal stability of the coating and achieving high‐barrier performance at lower cost and under extreme working conditions. The use of biodegradable polymers in the plastics industry has been increasing in recent years. The study of the chemical, physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of films based on biodegradable components is of interest to technologists because these properties determine their applicability for food packaging. In this work, films based on natural polymers such as linseed mucilage (LM) and chitosan (CH), as well as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were obtained through the casting method and using V‐50 as the initiator. The films were characterized through Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis, and their water absorption and swelling capacity, and thermal and mechanical properties were determined. Homogenous flexible, translucid, amber‐colored films, with low absorption and solubility in water were obtained. It was demonstrated through Fourier Transform Infrared analysis the chemical interaction between C–H, CO, and C–O chemical groups of LM, CH, and PAA. In addition, films showed high resistance to thermal decomposition between 125 and 425°C. The mechanical tests of tension allowed the composition of LM in the film, the behavior variates between a plastic and/or elastic material and with tensile strength (Rm) values between 10.8 and 16.4 MPa and elastic modulus (E) values between 56.2 and 169.2 GPa, we observed that at higher quantities of LM and thickness, both E and Rm tend to increase, while %EL decreases. This led us to conclude that the material transitioned from ductile and malleable to rigid and brittle. The films obtained with different ratios of LM/CH/PAA may exhibit a semi‐interpenetrating polymeric networking type morphology. This study developed a polymeric composite, sodium alginate (SA)/poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) cross-linked with FeCl3 (SA/PAA-Fe), for its function as adsorbent to eliminate acid black 1 dye (AB1) from an aqueous solution. The structural analysis of SA/PAA-Fe revealed a porous structure. To comprehensively evaluate the adsorption of AB1 onto SA/PAA-Fe and gain insight into its mechanism, we examined the effects of solution’s pH, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and adsorption temperature. The best adsorption conditions for achieving a highly effective removal percentage of 95.43 % were a pH of 8.9, contact period of 90 min, and a temperature of 45 °C. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models were fitted for the isotherm and kinetic model parameters, respectively. Thermodynamic analyses strongly suggested that the adsorption process occurred was endothermic and spontaneous. Biosensors (biological sensors) are a promising alternative to standard analytical techniques for testing and monitoring in the environment, among others, heavy metals. Biological materials that detect heavy metals include enzymes, bacteria, fungi, and plant and animal cells. The paper aimed to evaluate the possibilities of biosensor usage in environmental analysis, considering an easy and environmentally friendly analysis of individual compounds (e.g., heavy metals) or their mixtures in various samples directly in the environment, as well as continuous monitoring of these compounds. The work considers biosensors' characteristics, classification, and operation principles. Attention is paid to the possibility of using bioluminescent bacteria as biological material in a biosensor. Examples of the study of heavy metals using various biological sensors were given. It also indicates the possibility of using biosensors to determine microplastics by applying specific hormones (estrogens) receptor use and peptides as a solution or incorporating them into living microbial cells. Additionally, support was given to the use of biosensors to monitor plastics' degradation in the water environment using recombinant whole-cell microbial biosensors as detectors for plastic monomers such as acrylic acid monomers. The application of the biosensors highlighted in the paper is to shorten the time of toxicity studies by using new indicators or acceptors. However, several challenges must be overcome, such as cell viability and activity. [Display omitted] Understanding polyelectrolyte complexation remains limited due to the absence of a systematic methodology for analyzing the distribution of components between the polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) and the dilute phases. We developed a methodology based on NMR to quantify all components of solid-like PECs and their supernatant phases formed by mixing different ratios of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid)-sodium salt (PAA). This approach allowed for determining relative and absolute concentrations of polyelectrolytes in both phases by 1H NMR studies. Using 23Na and 35Cl NMR spectroscopy we measured the concentration of counterions in both phases. Regardless of the mixing ratio of the polyelectrolytes the PEC is charge-stoichiometric, and any excess polyelectrolytes to achieve charge stoichiometry remains in the supernatant phase. The majority of counterions were found in the supernatant phase, confirming counterion release being a major thermodynamic driving force for PEC formation. The counterion concentrations in the PEC phase were approximately twice as high as in the supernatant phase. The complete mass balance of PEC formation could be determined and translated into a molecular picture. It appears that PAH is fully charged, while PAA is more protonated, so less charged, and some 10% extrinsic PAH-Cl- pairs are present in the complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] With the advancement of wearable and implantable medical devices, hydrogel flexible bioelectronic devices have attracted significant interest due to exhibiting tissue-like mechanical compliance, biocompatibility, and low electrical resistance. In this study, the development and comprehensive performance evaluation of poly(acrylic acid)/ N,N′-bis(acryloyl) cystamine/ 1-butyl-3-ethenylimidazol-1-ium:bromide (PAA/NB/IL) hydrogels designed for flexible sensor applications are introduced. Engineered through a combination of physical and chemical cross-linking strategies, these hydrogels exhibit strong mechanical properties, high biocompatibility, and effective sensing capabilities. At 95 % strain, the compressive modulus of PAA/NB/IL 100 reach up to 3.66 MPa, with the loading–unloading process showing no significant hysteresis loop, indicating strong mechanical stability and elasticity. An increase in the IL content was observed to enlarge the porosity of the hydrogels, thereby influencing their swelling behavior and sensing functionality. Biocompatibility assessments revealed that the hemolysis rate was below 5 %, ensuring their suitability for biomedical applications. Upon implantation in rats, a minimal acute inflammatory response was observed, comparable to that of the biocompatibility control poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). These results suggest that PAA/NB/IL hydrogels hold promise as biomaterials for biosensors, offering a balance of mechanical integrity, physiological compatibility, and sensing sensitivity, thereby facilitating advanced healthcare monitoring solutions. [Display omitted] There are few explorations that have integrated multiple properties into photonic microobjects in a facile and controlled manner. In this work, we present a straightforward method to integrate different functions into individual photonic microobject. Droplet-based microfluidics was used to produce uniform droplets of an aqueous dispersion of monodispersed SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). The droplets evolved into opal-structured photonic microballs upon complete evaporation of water. After infiltration of an aqueous solution of acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) monomers into the interstices among SiO 2 NPs, opal-structured SiO 2 NPs/pAAm- co -AAc hydrogel composite photonic microballs were obtained upon UV irradiation. Afterwards, a wet etching process was introduced to etch the microballs in a controlled manner, yielding individual photonic microball composed of an SiO 2 NPs/pAAm- co -AAc composite opal core and a neat pAAm- co -AAc shell. The pendant carboxylic acid groups in the skeleton of the hydrogel matrix were further utilized to react with positively charged compounds, such as Ruthenium compound containing fluorescent polymers. The resulting photonic microobjects eventually featured with localized stimulus-responsive properties and multiple colors under different modes. The multifunctional photonic microobjects were discovered to have fivefold of anticounterfeiting properties when used as building blocks for anticounterfeiting structures and may have other potential applications. Objective To investigate the effects of polybutylene terephthalate(PBT) grafted with various monomers, such as acrylic acid(AA), acrylamide(AM), sodium styrene sulfonate(SSS), AA+ AM and AA+ SSS on platelet adhesion and function. Methods The AA, AM, SSS, AA+ AM, and AA+ SSS were grafted onto the surface of PBT by γ-ray irradiation, and the grafted PBT was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectrometry(FTIR) and wetting time. Platelet activation and aggregation of different monomers grafted with PBT were observed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Platelet concentration, maximum aggregation ability, positive expression rate of CD62p and hypotonic shock rate(HSR)of PBT grafted with different monomers were tested to study their effect on platelet adhesion and function. Results The characteristic absorption peaks of AA, AM and SSS appeared in FTIR, and the hydrophilicity of the grafted material was improved obviously, indicating that the monomer was grafted successfully. The results of SEM showed that the degree of platelet activation and aggregation caused by the original PBT was significantly higher than that of modified ones. Transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation is one of the most efficient methods for the preparation of chiral α-substituted propionic acids. However, research on this method, employing cleaner earth-abundant metal catalysts, is still insufficient in both academic and industrial contexts. Herein, we report an efficient nickel-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of α-substituted acrylic acids affording the corresponding chiral α-substituted propionic acids with up to 99.4% ee (enantiomeric excess) and 10,000 S/C (substrate/catalyst). In particular, this method can be used to obtain (R)-dihydroartemisinic acid with 99.8:0.2 dr (diastereomeric ratio) and 5000 S/C, which is an essential intermediate for the preparation of the antimalarial drug Artemisinin. The reaction mechanism has been investigated via experiments and DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations, which indicate that the protonolysis of the C-Ni bond of the key intermediate via an intramolecular proton transfer from the carboxylic acid group of the substrate, is the rate-determining step. Research on employing cleaner and more environmentally friendly earth-abundant metal catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation is still insufficient in both academic and industrial contexts. The quest for sustainable and functional food packaging materials has led researchers to explore biopolymers such as pullulan, which has emerged as a notable candidate for its excellent film-forming and anti-fogging properties. This study introduces an innovative anti-fog coating by combining pullulan with poly (acrylic acid sodium salt) to enhance the display of packaged food in high humidity environments without impairing the sealing performance of the packaging material—two critical factors in preserving food quality and consumers' acceptance. The research focused on varying the ratios of pullulan to poly (acrylic acid sodium salt) and investigating the performance of this formulation as an anti-fog coating on bioriented polypropylene (BOPP). Contact angle analysis showed a significant improvement in BOPP wettability after coating deposition, with water contact angle values ranging from ~60° to ~17° for formulations consisting only of poly (acrylic acid sodium salt) (P0) or pullulan (P100), respectively. Furthermore, seal strength evaluations demonstrated acceptable performance, with the optimal formulation (P50) achieving the highest sealing force (~2.7 N/2.5 cm) at higher temperatures (130 °C). These results highlight the exceptional potential of a pullulan-based coating as an alternative to conventional packaging materials, significantly enhancing anti-fogging performance. Highlights: Plasma-grafting acrylic acid composite membrane for MABR was prepared. Higher O2 transfer rate and better hydrophilicity for modified membranes than pristine. Modified PVDF membrane demonstrated superior nitrogen removal during startup. Activity of denitrifying bacteria was enhanced in the modified PVDF MABR. Microporous membranes such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) often exhibit suboptimal hydrophilicity and microbial adhesion, which impede effective nitrogen removal in membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs), particularly during initial operational phases. To address this issue, the present study introduced acrylic acid (AA) following plasma treatment (P) to enhance membrane performance, thereby engineering a novel composite material optimized for MABR applications. Four MABRs—Reactor with pristine PVDF membrane (R-PVDF), Reactor with composite PVDF membrane (R-PVDF-P-AA), Reactor with pristine PTFE membrane (R-PTFE), and Reactor with composite PTFE membrane (R-PTFE-P-AA)—were evaluated. The modified membranes displayed enhanced roughness and hydrophilicity, which improved biocompatibility and variably increased the oxygen transfer efficiency. Notably, the R-PVDF-P-AA configuration showed a significant enhancement in the removal rates of NH4+-N and total nitrogen (TN), achieving 78.5% and 61.3%, respectively, which was markedly higher than those observed with the original membranes. In contrast, the modified R-PTFE-P-AA exhibited lower removal efficiencies, with NH4+-N and TN reductions of approximately 60.0% and 49.5%. Detailed microbial community analysis revealed that the R-PVDF-P-AA membrane supported robust commensalism between ammonia-oxidizing and denitrifying bacteria, underpinning the improved performance. Haemonchus contortus is a blood-feeding gastrointestinal parasite that impacts grazing sheep, causing economic losses in animal production. Due to its anthelmintic resistance, alternative antiparasitic treatments like plant-based anthelmintics are necessary to explore. Artemisia cina (Asteraceae) is a plant whose n-hexane extract and ethyl acetate extract exhibit anthelmintic activity against H. contortus, the n-hexane more active. To discover additional bioactive metabolites, a chemical analysis was performed on ethyl acetate extract, which presented an LC90 of 3.30 mg/mL and allowed the isolation of 11-[(1R,5S,7R,8R,10S,)-1,8-dihydroxy-5,10-dimethyl-4-oxodecahydroazulen-7-yl] acrylic acid. This new sesquiterpene was identified through one and two-dimensional NMR. The compound was named cinic acid and displayed an LC50 of 0.13 (0.11–0.14) mg/mL and LC90 of 0.40 (0.37–0.44) mg/mL, which, compared with ethyl acetate extract larvicidal activity, was 256-fold more active at LC50 and 15.71-fold at LC90. In this study, a new sesquiterpene with larvicidal activity against H. contortus L3 infective larvae was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Artemisia cina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new hybrid composite materials for PEM fuel cell were synthesized by the UV polymerization of acrylic monomers (acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and a sulfo aromatic monomer, i.e., sodium styrene sulfonate, and the tetraethoxysilane/3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane-based sol–gel system. By means of X-ray spectroscopy, the fractal structure of the obtained materials was characterized. Proton conductivity and viscoelasticity of the obtained materials were determined depending on the content of the inorganic component in nanocomposites. The swelling behaviors and water retention of superabsorbent sand-fixing materials prepared from acrylic acid/acrylamide copolymer (AA/AM) and acid-modified attapulgite under ultrasonic treatments and different pH conditions were investigated. The results demonstrated that a suitable amount of attapulgite can effectively improve the absorption capacity and saltwater performance. The superabsorbent achieved the highest absorptions of 1257.54 g/g and 209.45 g/g in distilled water and a 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, and a higher water absorbency occurred over a wide pH range of 5~9 when the ultrasonic power was 200 W and the attapulgite content was 10%. Cancer immunotherapy using antigen-pulsed dendritic cells can induce strong cellular immune responses by priming cytotoxic T lymphocytes. In this study, we pulsed tumor cell lysates with VP-R8, a cell-penetrating D-octaarginine-linked co-polymer of N-vinylacetamide and acrylic acid (PNVA-co-AA), into the DC2.4 murine dendritic cell line to improve antigen uptake and then determined the anti-tumor effect in tumor-bearing mice. DC2.4 cells were pulsed with the cell lysate of EL4, a murine lymphoma cell line, and VP-R8 to generate the DC2.4 vaccine. For the in vivo study, DC2.4 cells pulsed with EL4 lysate and VP-R8 were subcutaneously injected into the inguinal lymph node to investigate the anti-tumor effect against EL4 and EL4-specific T cell immune responses. VP-R8 significantly improved antigen uptake into DC2.4 compared to conventional keyhole limpet hemocyanin (p < 0.05). The expression of MHC class I, MHC class II, and CD86 in DC2.4 cells significantly increased after pulsing tumor lysates with VP-R8 compared to other treatments (p < 0.05). The intra-lymph node injection of DC2.4 pulsed with both VP-R8 and EL4 lysate significantly decreased tumor growth compared to DC2.4 pulsed with KLH and lysates (p < 0.05) and induced tumor-infiltrating CD8T cells. The DC2.4 vaccine also remarkably increased the population of IFN-gamma-producing T cells and CTL activity against EL4 cells. In conclusion, we demonstrated that VP-R8 markedly enhances the efficiency of dendritic cell-based vaccines in priming robust anti-tumor immunity, suggesting its potential as a beneficial additive for dendritic cell-based immunotherapy. Nanoparticles composed of inorganic boron-containing compounds represent a promising candidate as 10B carriers for BNCT. This study focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and assessment of the biological activity of composite nanomaterials based on boron carbide (B4C). Boron carbide is a compelling alternative to borated molecules due to its high volumetric B content, prolonged retention in biological systems, and low toxicity. These attributes lead to a substantial accumulation of B in tissues, eliminating the need for isotopically enriched compounds. In our approach, B4C nanoparticles were included in composite nanostructures with ultrasmall superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs), coated with poly (acrylic acid), and further functionalized with the fluorophore DiI. The successful internalization of these nanoparticles in HeLa cells was confirmed, and a significant uptake of 10B was observed. Micro-distribution studies were conducted using intracellular neutron autoradiography, providing valuable insights into the spatial distribution of the nanoparticles within cells. These findings strongly indicate that the developed nanomaterials hold significant promise as effective carriers for 10B in BNCT, showcasing their potential for advancing cancer treatment methodologies. Faced with higher demands of pigments in various applications, the performance of pigments in a specific system is in urgent need of optimization and improvement. Polyorganosiloxane (POS) stands out among various encapsulating polymeric materials for pigment modification due to its superior thermal stability and alkali resistance. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of POS causes poor stability in aqueous systems, which is usually applied in environmentally friendly applications. Grafting hydrophilic polymer chains on the surface of POS could improve water dispersity. In addition, the encapsulated pigment can also be endowed with various functionalities by selecting or combining grafted polymers. Herein, we reported a strategy to encapsulate Prussian blue (PB27) with POS grafted with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide) (PHEAA) to allow better stability and functionality of the composite pigment particles, denoted as PB27@POS@PAA or PB27@POS@PHEAA, respectively. The effect of the number of monomers and the amount of initiator potassium persulfate (KPS) on the brush thickness of the grafted polymers was studied, along with various performance properties and the functionality of PB27@POS@PAA and PB27@POS@PHEAA. The dispersity, alkali resistance, and high-temperature stability are studied. The brush-like composite pigment performs better after centrifugation (5000 rpm, 30 min) or treatment under 90 °C when the dosage of grafting monomer AA or HEAA reaches 400 wt%. Optimal alkali resistance was obtained for PB27@POS@PAA (AA, 200 wt%) with a particle size variation of only 31 nm after 8 h. Comparably, PB27@POS@PHEAA behaved worse under similar conditions. Moreover, PB27@POS grafted with PAA was responsive to pH and that with PHEAA showed excellent antifouling properties, which could also be replaced by other functional monomers if needed. Hagenia abyssinica and Artemisia absinthium are widely distributed tree species in Ethiopia and known for their traditional medicinal uses. The present study was conducted to determine the essential oil and smoke constituents of H. abyssinica and A. absinthium leaves using GC-MS. The main components of the A. absinthium essential oil were valencene (5.48%), bornyl acetate (5.15%), and trans-cinnamic acid (4.34%). 2-Bornanone (18.54%), o-cymene (12.80%), and nerolidol (7.04%) were the dominant components of the MeOH fraction of the smoke derived from the leaves of A. absinthium, while 2-propenoic acid butyl ester (46.49%), heptadecane (10.66%), and 9-octylheptadecane (7.78%) were the major components of the n-hexane fraction. The main components of the H. abyssinica essential oil were cis-davanone (14.73%), Aristolediene (9.31%), and cryptone (6.50%). β-Myrcene (12.59%), neophytadiene (11.54%), and limonene (11.27%) were the dominant components of the MeOH fraction of the smoke derived from the leaves of H. abyssinica. 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene (33.58%), prehnitene (7.01%), and heptadecane (5.46%) were the dominant components of the n-hexane fraction of the smoke derived from the leaves of H. abyssinica. Using polyaspartic acid (PAsp) and bentonite (BT) as the main raw materials, a new type of degradable soil water retaining agent (PAsp-AA/BT) was synthesized by microwave radiation. The optimum synthesis conditions and comprehensive properties of PAsp-AA/BT were discussed and the structure and surface characteristics of PAspsp-AA/BT were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and TGA in the paper. The results showed that the optimum synthesis conditions of PAsp-AA/BT were as follows: the dosages of polyaspartic acid (PAsp), bentonite (BT), initiator potassium persulfate, crosslinking agent N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide was 5, 3, 0.3, 0.03%, respectively, the neutralization degree of acrylic acid was 75%, and the microwave power was 490W. Under this condition, the absorption ratio of the synthesized PAspsp-AA/BT in deionized water and 0.9% NaCl solution was 953 and 164 g/g, respectively. The synthesized PAsp-AA/BT had a high water absorption rate, good water retention and repeated water absorption, and the degradation rate in soil within 30 days reached 32.75%, with good degradation effect. The analysis of SEM, FT-IR, XRD and TGA showed that: the surface of PAsp-AA/BT was rough and had obvious pore structure, which was conducive to the diffusion of water molecules; polyaspartic acid, bentonite and acrylic acid were polymerized; the cross-linking structure was formed between polyaspartic acid, bentonite and acrylic acid; the product of PASP-AA/BT had good thermal stability. Levodopa (LD) has been the most efficacious medication and the gold standard therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) for decades. However, its long-term administration is usually associated with motor complications, which are believed to be the result of the fluctuating pharmacokinetics of LD following oral administration. Duodopa® is the current option to offer a continuous delivery of LD and its decarboxylase inhibitor carbidopa (CD); however, its administration involves invasive surgical procedures, which could potentially lead to lifelong complications, such as infection. Recently, dissolving microarray patches (MAPs) have come to the fore as an alternative that can bypass the oral administration route in a minimally invasive way. This work explored the potential of using dissolving MAPs to deliver LD and CD across the skin. An acidic polymer poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was used in the MAP fabrication to prevent the potential oxidation of LD at neutral pH. The drug contents of LD and CD in the formulated dissolving MAPs were 1.82 ± 0.24 and 0.47 ± 0.04 mg/patch, respectively. The in vivo pharmacokinetic study using female Sprague–Dawley® rats (Envigo RMS Holding Corp, Bicester, UK) demonstrated a simultaneous delivery of LD and CD and comparable AUC values between the dissolving MAPs and the oral LD/CD suspension. The relative bioavailability for the dissolving MAPs was calculated to be approximately 37.22%. Accordingly, this work highlights the use of dissolving MAPs as a minimally invasive approach which could potentially bypass the gastrointestinal pathway and deliver both drugs continuously without surgery.
