The United States and other governments are actively passing legislation addressing labor trafficking and child labor practices. This legislation includes the Updated Federal Acquisition Regulation and Proposed Federal Supply Chain Transparency Act in the United States; supply-chain laws in the United Kingdom and France; and corporate social responsibility (CSR) laws in the European Union, Canada, and India. Similarly, the Southern Poverty Law Center and others in the plaintiffs' bar are experiencing increasing success in bringing suits against businesses allegedly engaging in illegal labor trafficking and child labor practices. Against this backdrop of increasing regulatory action, business lawyers are well positioned to help their clients identify supply-chain risks involving labor trafficking and child labor. To assist them, a working group of the ABA Business Law Section developed four simple principles (since adopted by the ABA House of Delegates) to provide businesses and their lawyers with a risk-based compliance approach. The ABA Model Principles and related Policies are consistent with the growing body of regulatory law and can help businesses comply and hopefully avoid compliance issue pitfalls, such as have occurred with the Dodd-Frank conflict-minerals provisions, and litigation from a growing number of potential plaintiffs, including the families of over 1,100 workers killed in the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh. From the perspective of CSR--the subject matter covered by one of the Business Law Section's newest task forces--the ABA Model Principles and related Policies can help justify a business case against labor trafficking and child labor economically, legally, ethically, and philanthropically. This, in turn, helps both inside and outside counsel identify and navigate the human rights risks in the supply chains of the corporations they represent--corporations associated with products consumers buy and use every day. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between a sample of first-time college freshmen students' high school experiences that are developmentally related to information literacy competency and their scores on the iSkills assessment. iSkills is an online evaluation developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which tests the range of Information and Communications Technology literacy (ICT literacy) skills aligned with nationally recognized Association of Colleges & Research Libraries (ACRL) standards. Through hierarchical multiple regression analysis, four variables predictive of a significantly higher score on the iSkills assessment at the p < .05 level were identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

More specifically, necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for an atomic inner function with a single atom to be invariant for a composition operator, and the Blaschke product invariant subspaces for a composition operator are described. We show that if has Denjoy-Wolff point a on the unit circle, the atomic inner function subspaces with a single atom at a are invariant subspaces for the composition operator Cφ. Social media have become increasingly popular among different user groups. Although used for social purposes, some social media platforms (such as Wikipedia) have been emerging as important information sources. Focusing on undergraduate students, a survey was conducted to investigate the following: (1) which social media platforms are used as information sources; (2) what are the main reasons for using these social media platforms for information seeking; and (3) what kinds of actions are taken to evaluate the quality of the information gained from such sources. The study provides a snapshot of current trends in terms of the use of social media as information sources. It also sheds lights on the actions that the undergraduate students took to evaluate information from social media, including social networking and video sharing sites that have rarely been studied previously. This paper argues that inequalities can be more clearly understood by combining tool kit theories of culture that stress convergence between institutional expectations and individual behavior with symbolic interactionism, which emphasizes the interpretive and situational nature of behavior. I base these arguments on an ethnographic analysis of student responses to ambiguous expectations around help-seeking. Teachers’ shifting expectations created interpretive moments, to which middle-class and working-class students responded differently. Through a logic of entitlement, middle-class students saw ambiguities as opportunities for reward and tried to seek assistance. Through a logic of appeasement, working-class students saw ambiguities as opportunities for reprimand and sought to placate teachers by avoiding requests. Teacher responses to student behavior varied across situations but helped to perpetuate inequalities. Such findings suggest that the activation of tool kit resources and the stratified profits that result are more interpretive and situational than scholars typically acknowledge. The article discusses the cultural context of Korean adoptees who return to South Korea from Western nations. It is said that neoliberal values have led to the view of adoptees as human capital. Other topics include the treatment of adoptees by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the reunification of transnational adoptees with their Korean birth families, and the characterization of a returning adoptee as a study abroad student (yuhaksaeng). The article notes the role of the 1998 South Korean law Overseas Koreans Act (OKA).

This paper reports an exploration of religious information literacy in terms of how people use information to learn in the context of church communities. The research approach of phenomenography was used to explore Uniting Church in Australia members' experience of using information to learn as participants in their church communities. Five ways of experiencing religious information literacy were identified, using information to learn about: growing faith, developing relationships, managing the church, serving church communities and reaching out beyond church communities. It is anticipated that such findings will be of interest to information professionals, including information literacy specialists, as well as leaders and members of church communities. In medical imaging, the generation of surface representations of anatomical objects obtained by labeling images from various modalities, is a critical component for visualization, simulation, and analysis. The interfaces between labeled regions can meet at arbitrary angles and with complex topologies, causing most automatic meshing algorithms to fail. We apply a recent Delaunay refinement algorithm to generate high quality triangular meshes that approximate the interface surfaces. This algorithm has proven guarantees for meshing piecewise-smooth shapes and its implementation overhead is low. Consequently, the approach is applicable to labeled datasets generated from binary segmentations as well as from probabilistic segmentation algorithms. We show the effectiveness of this technique on data from a variety of medical fields and discuss its ability to control the quality and size of the output meshes. Topics discussed include the concept of information literacy (IL), the role of librarians in support learning, the language barriers faced by librarians in supporting information resilience, and the digital literacy.

This paper revisits the controversy, recently revived by British religious studies scholar, Kenneth C. G. Newport, that the Branch Davidians had a theological rationale for mass suicide and likely set fire to their own home. Newport couples the theological argument with assertions of "unassailable evidence" regarding the government's reports as if no alternative explanation is plausible. The paper challenges Newport's claim to the "unassailable evidence" found in government reports. Despite his largely uncritical acceptance of the official version of events, the reliability of the government's case is hampered in a number of ways. These include, among other things: false or misleading statements by federal officials; lost, mishandled, and/or concealed evidence; an independent arson report that challenges the government's conclusions; the suppression of evidence through extensive redaction and the use of procedural rulings; and exclusion of evidence in the federal civil trial. I also contend that the tragic denouement at Waco has to be viewed in the cultural context in which it emerged. Waco came to symbolize a deep political divide during a period of growing fears about "big government" and broad swaths of antigovernment sentiment, and, as such, served as a proxy for culture war battles in the early-to-mid 1990s. When examined against the backdrop of these disturbing machinations and conditions, the evidence supporting mass suicide at Mount Carmel is hardly unassailable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors also analyze the words used by the author in writing the story. They explain that the author's use of sunlight is not limited to mental or rational exchange or even use of language.

The article explores the concepts of information literacy, information technology (IT) fluency, and information fluency. It describes Christine Bruce's model of information literacy, which was developed from a research on how academic professionals use and experience information. It outlines the major strands of information literacy as stated in the Society of College, National, and University Libraries's (SCONUL) Seven Pillars model. It discusses the blended nature of information fluency and offers information on the information fluency program offered at DePauw University and the University of Central Florida.

On September 10 and 11, 2019, the f-cell took place in Stuttgart for the 19th time, and as one could undoubtedly observe, the event has changed fundamentally over the years. After the focus on the trade fair in the meantime, the symposium is now more in the spotlight again.
