The most popular science fiction novel written by the Polish author Stanisław Lem, Solaris, was published in 1961. Although it was translated into English as early as 1970, the book was unknown to the Sinophone readers until 2003, when the first translation from English into Chinese was published, most probably following the popularity of the resounding Hollywood film adaptation from 2002. Still, Suolalisi Xing (which can be translated as 'Solaris Star') did not attract broader audiences in China or Taiwan, at least not until the third version of the novel, translated directly from Polish into Chinese, saw the light of day in 2010. The appearance of this translation coincided with the beginning of a New Golden Era of Chinese and Taiwanese science fiction, which undoubtedly had a significant influence on the positive re-reception of Solaris. In the paper, the author focuses on the philosophical aspect of Lem's work and investigates which themes and concepts present in Solaris caught the imagination of Chinese-speaking readers. The author wants to show how this reception, while coming from a different historical, cultural, and linguistic background, can enrich our understanding of the novel and introduce a new way of looking at the important existential questions stated by the writer. An editorial is presented on peer review on institutional hypocrisy and author ambivalence. It reflects on jurisdictions of law faculties on the process of appointment and promotion of their faculty. It also highlights research support programmes of the European Research Council and the Commission of the European Union for overall assessment of a legal scholar, as of November 2020.

This article has been abstracted from a series of telephone conference discussions among E. Christopher Johnson, Jr., John H. Stout, and Ashley C. Walter, each of whom has chaired committees of the Business Law Section and served as a member of the Council. The discussions focused on the evolution, meaning and critical importance of the ideas, meanings, and principles embodied in the terms "sustainability," CSR (corporate social responsibility), and ESG (environment, social, and governance). The discussion began before the novel coronavirus pandemic and the killing of George Floyd impacted our lives and our country's and the world's social, political, and economic well-being and order. The discussion and preparation of this article was heavily influenced by these events as they forced not only an examination of the history of the above terms but also a reflection on their application to, and relevance for, strategically charting a path forward. The article deals with the range of ways myths function in the poetry of Julia Fiedorczuk. As well as being a poet, Fiedorczuk is also a professional academic, translator. Her writing, rooted in American modernist poetry, while also belonging to the fields of eco-criticism and feminism, is one of the most fascinating bodies of work in Poland today. This article analyses the poetic strategies known as hybridism, describing it on numerous semantic levels. In it, I introduce the category of mermaidism, which is connected with hybridism; it is the creative foundation for poetry which opposes the forces of unification, bonding, thinking of continuum and symmetry. More than a quarter-century ago, the ABA Business Law Section made a commitment to the development of business courts across the United States. From the formation of its Ad Hoc Committee on Business Courts in 1994 through the engagement with state officials and business-court judges for more than two decades, the Section has become a driving force behind the adoption and refinement of the business-court concept by an overwhelming majority of the states. In this article, the innovators and champions of business courts who took up the cause on behalf of the Section tell the story of how the Section played a central role in the success of business-court initiatives and how the Section works diligently today to maintain and build upon that success. Education tax credits provide federal financial aid to a wide expanse of American taxpayers; however, little research or analysis has been done on these costly programs. There has been little evidence of its link to college enrollment growth. This descriptive paper outlines the establishment of education tax credits, their original intent, and the lack of evidence of effectual federal policy over the past two decades. Thus, the purpose of this article is to assess how the federal government has reached an $18.9 billion annual expenditure for education tax credits with little to show in returns on investment. Further, this paper will provide recommendations needed to increase education tax policy efficacy. Since tax rewards reach more recipients than other forms of federal aid programs, they have the potential to increase college enrollment and educational attainment while providing liquidity-constrained individuals with greater incentive to enroll, persist, and graduate. If evaluated and remediated, education tax credits could positively affect the diversity of college populations, providing additional opportunities for desiring, potential students. The aim of this article is to analyse Witold Gombrowicz’s short story entitled “Pamiętnik Stefana Czarnieckiego” in the context of the convergence between the writer’s worldview and the philosophy of Michel Foucault. Nietzschean motifs inspired both authors to formulate a similar constructivist anthropology and a similar criticism of the concept of discipline. The themes of form and creating a human being by a human being – central to Gombrowicz’s writing – correspond to Foucault’s notion of the production of the subject. In such a perspective, “Pamiętnik Stefana Czarnieckiego” can be read as a record of the experience of an individual subjected to social practices of disciplinary embarrassment, aimed at producing a subject defined by nationality and heteronormativity, as well as the experience of rebellion against an imposed identity. Such a reading reveals the political stakes of the literary output by the author of Ferdydurke: expressed in the deconstruction of authoritarian forms of empowerment and in the pursuit to replace them with forms of subjectification based on irony, fluidity and distance. This text is a reconstruction of the image of Venice offered in Listy z podróży by Antoni Edward Odyniec. Against the background of Romantic traditions (Byron, Chateaubriand, Shelley, and Radcliffe), I present how the author shaped the portrait of Venice suspended between the Romantic vision of the city/monster (Leviathan) and the ballad-based vision of the city/Siren. I indicate not only the fact that the image of Venice was rooted in the sentimental/Romantic stereotype, but I also define to what extent it was formed by the imagined world of Polish nobility, i.e. szlachta. Most of all, however, I am interested in the traces present in Listy z podróży which enable one to uncover Mickiewicz’s influence on how Odyniec shaped the image of Venice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From recent doctoral research into information literacy and workplace learning, an understanding of information literacy as a complex constellation of experiences and relationships with a range of information modalities is emerging. It is constituted through the connections among people, artifacts, texts, and bodily experiences that draw a person into context and enable him or her to know the landscape. A three-year qualitative study of firefighters in regional New South Wales, Australia, is described. It was framed by constructionist thinking about the nature and role of information literacy in learning about practice and profession and about the relationship between power and knowledge. The findings of the study support a new definition of information literacy that recognizes information literacy as a way of knowing, that is, as more than just the acquisition of skills and attributes. Information literacy has thus far been mostly a practical and strategic concept guiding the library field's efforts in teaching information seeking and using skills. Texts on information literacy rarely attempt to account for how individuals interact with other people and technical artifacts in their information environments. This article con tributes to the literature on information literacy by introducing a definition of information literacy as a sociotechnical practice. Information literacy evolves in the course of realizing specific work-related tasks and mundane activities, which usually involve a complex system of social relationships, sociotechnical configurations, and work organization. From the perspective of a situated understanding of learning and learning requirements, information skills cannot be taught independently of the knowledge domains, organizations, and practical tasks in which these skills are used. The article suggests that studying and understanding the interplay between information technologies, workplace learning, and domain-specific knowledge formation processes is necessary for the advancement of information literacy initiatives. It mentions focus on the student's perspective on the development of teaching and learning environments; and also mentions educational architecture of great interest for the library community, especially regarding the pandemic-related increase in hybrid teaching.

This paper proposes a model for developing an Age-Friendly Media and Information Literate (#AFMIL) city. It starts by addressing general issues concerning ageing and ageism. Key features of UNESCO's framework for a media and information literate city are described. The authors proceed to identify relevant international handbooks, guidelines and initiatives concerning agefriendly environments, cities for human rights, smart cities, creative cities and informational cities. Drawing on these documents, the authors outline a model for developing an #AFMIL city, centred on older people enacting three roles: their role as consumers of media and information; older people as represented in the media; and older people in their role as creators, critics and innovators. Time is a site of power, one that enacts particular subjectivities and relationships. In the workplace, time enables and constrains performance, attitudes, and behaviors. In this qualitative research study, I examine the impact of the values and practices of new public management on academic librarians' experiences of time when engaged in pink-collar public service (reference and information literacy) work. Data gathered during semi-structured interviews with twenty-four public service librarians in Canadian public research-intensive universities, members of the U15 Group, serve as a site of analysis for this study. Interview data were first analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke 2006) within a constructionist framework. Sharma's (2014) theory of power-chronography—time as power—was then used as an analytical framework. Findings suggest that, in keeping with research on the temporal experiences of faculty, academic librarians' temporal labor is structured and controlled by the logics and institutional arrangements of new public management. Moreover, like their faculty counterparts, academic librarians experience temporal intensification and acceleration. However, as marginal educators and members of a feminized profession, librarians also encounter "recalibration" (Sharma 2014), the need to modify the tempo of their own labor to be "in time" with the dominant temporalities of faculty and students. This paper aims to show that the comparison of the source and target text's information structure should be a prerequisite of and take priority over the analysis of their thematic structure (in the Hallidayan sense). Thus, it is argued that in such analysis the original's distribution of communicative dynamism is a more important consideration that its linear arrangement. The article offers a critical analysis of Munday (1998) and contrasts his approach with the one based on the model developed by the Brno branch of the Prague School. It is also pointed out that the conflict between keeping the original's word order and the distribution of communicative dynamism may often be resolved by means of the strategies for avoiding linear dislocation described by Baker (1992: 167-172). This paper analyses the distinction between an 'employee' and 'independent contractor' and its application to companies in the 'gig economy'. This question is exemplified by global debate concerning how Uber drivers are classified. The author argues that the current Australian legal test,1 absent of legislative reform, cannot confidently answer this question and proposes several suggestions. This paper is divided into five sections. The first section introduces the issue. The second section examines the significance of classifying workers, explains the Australian legal test and considers its application to the gig economy. The third section explores the legal landscape in the United Kingdom and compares it with Australian law. The fourth section considers recent and notable legislative reform in both jurisdictions. This article shows that some of the wealth gains from financial decisions involving changes in security form occur on predictable ex dates. For a sample of 113 spinoffs during 1964 to 90, we document an average excess return of 3.0 percent on ex dates, roughly the same magnitude as the average announcement-date return. We conjecture that the spinoff ex-date return arises because the parent and subsidiary stocks attract different investors who prefer to buy the separated shares after the ex date. We also document that, on average, the target shareholders in stock-for-stock mergers earn an excess return of 1.5 percent on merger ex dates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research on organizational succession is reviewed briefly and the limitations are summarized. An ethnomethodological approach is then developed as a means of enriching theories of succession by focusing on the richness and complexity of actual succession events. The usefulness of the ethnomethodological approach is illustrated by examining a detailed account of the first occurrence of succession in an emerging social organization, where succession took the form of status degradation. An analysis of succession events is proposed which 1) views the emerging organization as a linguistic construction that members used as a resource in accomplishing succession, 2) subsumes and explains members' activities, practical concerns, and conversational utterances, and 3) conceives of succession as an event accomplished through situated activity, ritual forms, and the social construction of an enforceable organizational reality. Finally, a grounded, low-order, substantive model of succession is constructed. Directions for future elaboration of the model are proposed, and the general usefulness of an ethnomethodological approach to understanding organizational phenomena is indicated.
