The study of the energy accumulation and rate of release in hard coal under dynamic, static, and coupled dynamic-static loading and its failure mode is of significance when studying the mechanism underpinning coal mine dynamic disasters such as rock burst, coal, and gas outburst. In this paper, four experimental methods (uniaxial compression, Brazilian splitting, and coupled dynamic-static tensile and coupled dynamic-static compression) were used to analyze the energy accumulation, energy rate of release, and failure modes of this type of hard coal under different loading conditions. It was concluded that (1) the energy accumulation and rate of releases of this type of hard coal under static compression are 17.63–179.90 times and 18.57–13157.89 times those under static tension; the energy accumulation and rate of releases in dynamic compression are 2.11–248.53 and 0.23–48 times those under dynamic tension, respectively. (2) During dynamic loading, the ratio of compressive energy accumulation to tensile energy accumulation is reduced by 1.6 times compared with static loading, and the ratio of compressive energy release to tensile energy rate of release is decreased by 363.84 times compared with static loading. (3) The energy accumulation and rate of releases of this type of hard coal for dynamic tensile are, respectively, 2.64–17.42 and 1.07–5.26 times those under static tensile load; the energy accumulation under dynamic compression is greater than that under static compression, being 0.24–15.04 times that under static compressive, but the energy rate of release under dynamic compression is 0.0003–0.56 times that under static compression. (4) The greater the prepeak energy accumulation, the greater the degree of damage of the coal sample at each stage, and also the higher the degree of fragmentation after the failure. Protective coal layer (PCL) mining is a preferred regional method for preventing coal and gas outbursts; stress‐relief of PCL mining is the prerequisite of pressure‐relief gas drainage. In order to study the stress‐relief effect of PCL mining on protected coal seams and determine the protection scope of PCL mining under different inclinations, this paper uses physical simulations to study the stress‐relief law and deformation characteristics of the strata during upper PCL mining with a gentle inclination (25°), an intermediate inclination (45°), and a steep inclination (65°). The results show that as the coal seam dip increases, the degree of deformation and failure of the overburden strata gradually decreases, the severe subsidence and expansion area of the overburden strata tends to gradually develop in the uphill direction of the working face, and the floor strata underlying the protective seam significantly expand toward the goaf. However, the absolute value of the upward movement of the floor strata is much smaller than that of the roof strata; and the greater the dip angle, the greater the ratio of floor displacement to roof subsidence. The stress‐relief curve of the protected layer is approximately U‐shaped. As the inclination of the coal seam increases, the stress‐relief range decreases gradually. The maximum relief‐stress and the stress release coefficient of the protected layer initially increase and then decrease. The stress concentration coefficient of the protected coal seam initially increases first and then decreases in both uphill and downhill of the working face in the PCL. As the inclination increases, the stress‐relief angle of the downhill boundary initially increases and then decreases, while the stress‐relief angle of the uphill boundary decreases gradually. The revelation of the distribution characteristics of stress and fractures in the floor strata is of great significance to improve the regional gas drainage efficiency and to eliminate or reduce the risk of coal and gas outburst in adjacent coal seams during multi‐seam mining. In this paper, the stress distribution in the floor under mining condition was derived, and the characteristics of stress zones in the floor were elaborated while mining the 22201 working face in Shaqu coal mine in Shanxi province, China. Besides, the propagation laws of fractures in different stress zones were theoretically analyzed, and the distribution law of fracture angles in the floor strata under different mining‐induced stresses was obtained. The research results demonstrate that the compression and transition zones show high vertical stress and less developed fractures and are dominated by fractures with a large angle (>60°), which is unfavorable for gas drainage. The expansion zone in the floor within 2‐40 m in the rear of the working face is characterized by high unloading degree of vertical stress and developed fractures. Moreover, fractures with a small angle (<60°) dominate the spatial distribution of the fractures, which is favorable for gas drainage. The research results can not only be a beneficial supplement to the theory of coal and gas co‐exploitation in multi‐seam mining but also provide theoretical support for optimizing the design parameters of cross‐measure boreholes under similar conditions. Coal and gas outburst is a potentially fatal risk during the mining of gassy coal seams, which seriously threatens the safe mining of collieries. To understand the outburst mechanism and evolution rules, a new apparatus (LSTT) was developed to conduct simulated experiment. In the context of an outburst accident in Dingji coal mine, the authors launched an authentic outburst experiment to replay the outburst accident. Experimental apparatus, similar criterion, coal‐like materials and gas sources, and experimental design were discussed systematically in this paper. Experimentally, the study analyzed the geo‐stress has significant influence on the outburst evolution. At the driving face, the stress concentration possibly caused gas outburst, under the influence of mining‐induced stress. After the outburst occurred, the stress balance of the coal changed, resulting in the instability of the coal. Furthermore, the elastic energy, gas enthalpy, and gravitational potential energy were released rapidly. The experimental result stated that outburst coal has the sorting characteristics, in line with the field outburst law. The intensity prediction model has been built based on the energy model. Moreover, the factors that impact outburst intensity were analyzed. In the process of coal and gas outburst, the gas enthalpy of gas and the elastic potential of coal are the main energy sources. In the process of coal mining, coal and gas outburst is one of the most severe disasters, which is accompanied by the outbursts of CO2, CH4, N2, and other gases. Since the intensity of the outburst is affected by the adsorption characteristics of different gases, the study of the adsorption characteristics of multi-gas in the coal body is of great significance for the prevention and control of coal and gas dynamical outbursts in coal mining. In this paper, the self-developed adsorption-instantaneous pressure relief test system for gas-containing coal was used to study the damage characteristics of multi-gas in briquette adsorption-instantaneous pressure relief and to characterize coal adsorption expansion deformation and instantaneous pressure relief deformation quantitatively. The results showed that under the same temperature and pressure conditions, the adsorption expansion deformation capacities of different gases were in the order of CO2 > CH4 > N2. With the increasing pressure of pressure relief, the damage of the coal body tended to be more significant. Although the briquette exhibited isotropic mechanical properties, the process of adsorption expansion deformation was not completely consistent with the isotropy of deformation, in which the axial strain was slightly larger than the radial strain. Gas outburst can result in great loss of life and property during tunnel construction. Gas outburst in tunnels in non-coal formation is often more harmful than that in coal-bearing formation. In order to take effective countermeasures to prevent the occurrence of gas outburst during tunnel construction, it is essential to assess the risk of gas outburst before tunnel construction. This paper attempts to establish an assessment system for evaluating the risk of gas outburst in tunnels in non-coal formation in the survey phase of tunnelling based on the attribute mathematical theory. Based on the principle of relevance and operability, eight factors that influence the gas outburst in non-coal formation are selected as the attribute evaluation indices. Attribute measure functions are constructed to calculate the single index attribute measures for evaluation indices. The fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process is used to determine weights of evaluation indices. A confidence criterion is applied to recognize the risk grade of the evaluation object. The proposed attribute evaluation system is applied to assess the gas outburst risk in a tunnel in the survey phase. Gas pressure is one of the major factors to characterize the outburst danger of coal seams. Generally, the process of gas pressure determination is complicate and cannot ensure the accuracy of results, which may cause a wrong identification of outburst danger. This paper discussed and revealed a positive correlation between initial gas emission and gas pressure, which provides a new approach to identify the outburst danger by initial gas emission. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the liner equation of gas pressure and initial gas emission was deduced. Laboratory experiments under adsorption and desorption of CO2 and N2 were performed using coal samples from Weishe coal mine. The data of initial gas emission under different gas pressure were recorded, and the fitting curves were obtained. The results show a positive correlation between initial gas emission and gas pressure, and the curve of N2 was below the CO2. Especially, while the adsorption gas pressure was under 0.663 and 0.675 MPa, the difference of corresponding initial gas emission was only 0.01 L/s, which indicates the high degree of correlation. Vibrations caused by downhole operations often induce coal and gas outburst accidents in tectonic zone coal seams. To clarify how vibration affects the pore structure, gas desorption, and diffusion capacity of tectonic coal, isothermal adsorption-desorption experiments under different vibration frequencies were carried out. In this study, high-pressure mercury intrusion experiments and low-pressure liquid nitrogen adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the pore structures of tectonic coal before and after vibration. The pore distribution of vibration-affected tectonic coal, including local concentration, heterogeneity, and connectivity, was analyzed using multifractal theory. Further, a correlation analysis was performed between the desorption diffusion characteristic parameters and the pore fractal characteristic parameters to derive the intrinsic relationship between the pore fractal evolution characteristics and the desorption diffusion characteristics. The results showed that the vibration increased the pore volume of the tectonic coal, and the pore volume increased as the vibration frequency increased in the 50 Hz range. The pore structure of the vibration-affected tectonic coal showed multifractal characteristics, and the multifractal parameters affected the gas desorption and diffusion capacity by reflecting the density, uniformity, and connectivity of the pore distribution in the coal. The increases in the desorption amount (Q), initial desorption velocity (V0), initial diffusion coefficient (D0), and initial effective diffusion coefficient (De) of the tectonic coal due to vibration indicated that the gas desorption and diffusion capacity of the tectonic coal were improved at the initial desorption stage. Q, V0, D0, and De had significant positive correlations with pore volume and the Hurst index, and V0, D0, and De had negative correlations with the Hausdorff dimension. To a certain extent, vibration reduced the local density regarding the pore distribution in the coal. As a result, the pore size distribution was more uniform, and the pore connectivity was improved, thereby enhancing the gas desorption and diffusion capacity of the coal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal and gas outburst is a common coal-rock dynamic disaster. Such accidents frequently occur, and the mechanism underlying the occurrence of these outbursts is complex. As a typical failure mode of a gas-filled and pressure-relieved coal body, the spallation mechanism should be investigated to reveal the mechanism of coal and gas outburst and guide outburst-prevention strategies. In this paper, a fluid-solid coupling model for coal seam gas flow is established. This model considers the adsorption characteristics of coal. Numerical calculations are used to simulate the stress field distribution and evolution of gas-filled coal bodies under different boundary conditions. The mechanical mechanism of the spallation occurrence after the pressure relief of coal is explained from the perspective of seepage breaking coal. The control of the flow and stress state of the gas to the spallation failure is analyzed. The mechanical-quantitative conditions for the initial failure of the coal body under seepage and the mechanical-qualitative conditions for the continuous advancement and termination of spallation are studied based on numerical solution results. The numerical calculation results show that the formation of a flow field after pressure relief will apply a drag force (tensile stress) on the porous media of coal. The presence of this force plays a crucial role in promoting the spallation and cracking of coal and, thus, the promotion of spallation. The tensile strength, initial adsorption pressure, and pressure relief rate of the coal body jointly control whether the initial failure can occur and the thickness of the fracture layer cracks. Spallation propulsion is mainly determined by the pressure relief conditions of the undestroyed coal body and pressure changes in the spallation space; the former can be quantitatively obtained by numerical calculations, whereas the latter is related to the thickness of the spalled layer and the degree of the layer-crack structure. In order to improve the monitoring and prediction of coal and gas outburst, this paper proposes a new method for dynamic regional prediction of coal and gas outburst using microseismic (MS) monitoring. The theoretical basis of this method is presented. An index evaluation system was established and applied, based on which field tests were carried out in a coal mine. The results show that seismic monitoring with frequency and energy indexes can obtain good results for mining disturbance intensity monitoring and geological structure detection; the regional stress distribution detected by seismic wave tomography is consistent with the theoretical stress field, making its use of great significance for optimizing coal and gas outburst drilling parameters and improving overall tunneling efficiency. This approach overcomes the limitations of traditional methods in the temporal and spatial dimensions and realizes dynamic and continuous monitoring of coal and gas outburst-prone areas. In recent years, with the increase in mining depth and strength, coal‐rock gas dynamic disasters, such as coal and gas outburst, have shown an increasing trend. Acoustic emission (AE) technology has been viewed as a promising method that can effectively forecast coal and gas dynamic disasters. This paper first tests the AE characteristics of coal and rock samples during loading. Then, self‐developed AE continuous monitoring and early warning equipment is used to monitor and predict the coal and gas outburst dynamic disasters on the working face. And it is found that the coal samples primarily show ductile failure, and the AE exhibits the evolutionary characteristics of "rise‐peak‐fall". The rock samples primarily exhibit brittle failure, and the AE evolution mode is almost no falling stage. Coal and gas outbursts occur after the stress peak. Before coal and gas outbursts occur, there is a clear increasing trend in the AE ahead of the gas concentration variation. When the gas‐bearing coal is damaged by the load, the coal body first breaks due to the stress, and the AE value increases. Then, due to the fracture of the coal body, the crack penetrates, gas rushes out, and the gas concentration increases. The research results can provide an advanced technical method for the monitoring and early warning of coal–rock gas dynamic disasters, and improve the prediction accuracy for dynamic disasters. The AE exhibits the evolutionary characteristics of "rise‐peak‐fall"; the rock sample exhibits brittle failure, and the AE evolution mode lacks the "decline" stage. There is a clear increasing trend in the AE before the gas concentration variation and accidents. Coal and gas outburst is one of the main gas hazards in coal mines. However, due to the risks of the coal and gas outburst, the field test is difficult to complete. Therefore, an effective approach to studying the mechanism and development of outburst is to conduct the similar physical simulation. However, the similarity criteria and similar materials in outburst are the key factors which restrict the development of physical simulation. To solve those problems, this paper has established similarity criteria base on mechanics model, solid-fluid coupling model and energy model, and presented high similar materials. Combining with three groups of similar number, and considering similar mechanical parameters and deformation and failure regularity, the similarity criteria of outburst is determined on the basis of the energy model. According to those criteria, we put forward a similar material consists of pulverized coal, cement, sand, activated carbon, and water. The similar material has high compressive strength and the accordant characteristics with the raw coal, include density, porosity, adsorption, desorption. Gas outbursts pose a significant threat in the mining of deep low‐permeability coal seams. As mining depth increases, there is a rise in coal and gas dynamic disasters, rendering the gas outburst prevention technology from shallow mining areas unsuitable for deep coal seam exploitation. Addressing the challenges posed by deep, highly gassy coal seams, this study introduces a gas outburst prevention technology integrating destressing in the close distance underlying roadway with gas drainage. The article investigates the relevant technical parameters and assesses the feasibility of this approach. First, it establishes destressing model for the underlying roadway to derive an analytical solution for stress distribution in the coal seam. Second, appropriate technical parameters are designed considering the seepage characteristics of gas in the coal seam. Finally, the gas drainage technical scheme is implemented at Qujiang coal mine to verify its on‐site effectiveness. Field test results indicate an increase in gas permeability within the coal seam following destressing in the underlying roadway, accompanied by significant improvements in the efficiency of gas drainage and the advancement speed of the coal roadway. Specifically, the driving speed of the coal roadway has escalated from 40 m/month to 150 m/month. These outcomes demonstrate the potential of this technology as a promising approach for preventing gas outbursts in the challenging context of deep, low‐permeability coal seams, facilitating swift coal roadway excavation. The coal and gas outburst and rockburst coupling disaster is becoming increasingly serious due to deep mining. To clarify the mechanism inducing the outburst–rockburst coupling disaster, a true triaxial single-sided unloading mechanical test was conducted with the aid of a true triaxial solid–thermal–gas coupling test device, an industrial computed tomography (CT) system, and an acoustic emission system. Through this test, the mechanical characteristics, meso crushing characteristics, and acoustic characteristics in the disaster formation process were obtained. Additionally, the outburst–rockburst coupling instability disaster law was verified by numerical simulation. The results demonstrated that the stress unloading degree of the coal body was negatively correlated with the initial gas pressure in the outburst–rockburst coupling disaster. The time domain parameter count and energy of acoustic emission exhibited a "bimodal" distribution pattern in the instability stage. The rockburst would occur when the peak value was in a "low-count and high-energy" state, while coal and gas outburst would occur when the peak value was in a "high-count and low-energy" state. The meso slice revealed that gas degradation promoted the development of microcracks in the coal body, and the penetration of cracks resulted in the main cracks of structural instability during rockburst. The coal and gas outburst was mainly attributed to the "cross" shear failure pattern of the coal body. Addressing common challenges such as limited indicators, poor adaptability, and imprecise modeling in gas pre-warning systems for driving faces, this study proposes a hybrid predictive and pre-warning model grounded in time-series analysis. The aim is to tackle the effects of broad application across diverse mines and insufficient data on warning accuracy. Firstly, we introduce an adaptive normalization (AN) model for standardizing gas sequence data, prioritizing recent information to better capture the time-series characteristics of gas readings. Coupled with the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model, AN demonstrates superior forecasting performance compared to other standardization techniques. Next, Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) is used for feature extraction, guiding the selection of the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) order. Minimal decomposition errors validate the efficacy of this approach. Furthermore, enhancements to the transformer framework are made to manage non-linearities, overcome gradient vanishing, and effectively analyze long time-series sequences. To boost versatility across different mining scenarios, the Optuna framework facilitates multiparameter optimization, with xgbRegressor employed for accurate error assessment. Predictive outputs are benchmarked against Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), GRU, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM), where the hybrid model achieves an R-squared value of 0.980975 and a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.000149, highlighting its top performance. To cope with data scarcity, bootstrapping is applied to estimate the confidence intervals of the hybrid model. Dimensional analysis aids in creating real-time, relative gas emission metrics, while persistent anomaly detection monitors sudden time-series spikes, enabling unsupervised early alerts for gas bursts. This model demonstrates strong predictive prowess and effective pre-warning capabilities, offering technological reinforcement for advancing intelligent coal mine operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A thin coal seam mined as a protective coal seam above a gas outburst coal seam plays a central role in decreasing the degree of stress placed on a protected seam, thus increasing gas permeability levels and desorption capacities to dramatically eliminate gas outburst risk for the protected seam. However, when multiple layers of coal seams are present, stress-relieved gas from adjacent coal seams can cause a gas explosion. Thus, the post-drainage of gas from fractured and de-stressed strata should be applied. Comprehensive studies of gas permeability evolution mechanisms and gas seepage rules of protected seams close to protective seams that occur during protective seam mining must be carried out. Based on the case of the LongWall (LW) 23209 working face in the Hancheng coal mine, Shaanxi Province, this paper presents a seepage model developed through the FLAC3D software program (version 5.0, Itasca Consulting Group, Inc., Minneapolis, MI, USA) from which gas flow characteristics can be reflected by changes in rock mass permeability. A method involving theoretical analysis and numerical simulation was used to analyze stress relief and gas permeability evolution mechanisms present during broken rock mass compaction in a goaf. This process occurs over a reasonable amount of extraction time and in appropriate locations for comprehensive gas extraction technologies. In using this comprehensive gas drainage technological tool, the safe and efficient co-extraction of thin coal seams and gas resources can be realized, thus creating a favorable environment for the safe mining of coal and gas outburst seams. Coal and gas delayed outburst is a special type of outburst. At present, it is in the exploratory stage to research on coal and gas delayed outburst, so the research work is of great significance. In this paper, the cause of coal and gas delayed outburst is discussed from the viewpoint of coal body structure characteristics. Some understandings are concluded as follows: the coal and gas outburst may occur when the energy conducive to outburst is greater than the energy not conducive to outburst, which is the mechanics criterion of coal and gas outburst. Among the numerous mining coal seams, some coal seams are consisted of soft-andbroken coal and hard-and-lump coal, and these two coals are may alternately arrayed. For these soft coal and lump coal alternated coal seams, the soft-and-broken coal is with the positive effect of outburst while the hard-and-lump coal is with the negative effect of outburst. At the beginning of unloading, the outburst may not occur when negative effect is greater than positive effect. Along with the time, the deformation of the hard-and-lump coal will increase after unloading, so the negative effect of outburst will decrease gradually. To a certain point of time, the instability and failure of hard-and-lump coal will occur, and this causes the result that the positive effect is greater than the negative effect, which may lead to the outburst of coal and gas. For deep coal mines, geological disturbances or mining activities can cause damage to coal and rock masses, easily inducing dynamic disasters such as rock bursts or coal and gas outbursts, which seriously threaten the safety production of coal mine. In this paper, first, the Liyazhuang Coal Mine introduced the SOS MS (Sensor Observation Service Microseismic) monitoring system from the Polish Research Institute and verified the accuracy of its positioning. Then, to study the characteristics of MS signals induced by different mining activities, based on the field monitoring results, the waveform and frequency spectrum characteristics of MS signals at different energy levels induced by different mining activities are analyzed, and the energy levels of MS signals caused by different mining activities are classified. Studies have shown that there are large differences in the waveform and spectral characteristics of MS signals at different energy levels. High-level energy seismic signals are characterized by large amplitudes, low frequencies, relatively concentrated distribution, long vibration duration, and slow attenuation. In addition, the relationship between mining activities and MS events is also statistically analyzed based on the spatial and temporal distribution of MS events with the advancement of working face, and the results show that the increase of vibration frequency and energy can be precursor information for roof pressure. With the advance of the working face, the MS energy has the characteristic of periodic distribution, which is consistent with the periodic weighting revealed by the working resistance of the support. Determining the influence scope of the airflow disorder is an important problem after coal and gas outburst accidents in ventilation systems. This paper puts forward the indexes of airflow disorder, including the length of the excavation roadway, the outburst pressure, the pressure difference of the air door, and the air quantity of the auxiliary fan. Using the orthogonal table of L9 (34) and numerical simulation method, the characteristics of airflow reversal are studied, and the outburst airflow reversal degree is calculated should the ventilation facility fail. Furthermore, on the basis of fuzzy comprehensive optimization theory, the comprehensive evaluation model of the airflow disorder is established. The results show that the length of the excavation roadway is the most important factor affecting the stability of the ventilation system, followed by the outburst pressure, pressure difference of the air door, and air quantity of the auxiliary fan. The influence of a gas outburst accident on the return air system is greater than that on the inlet air system, and a larger air velocity has a greater impact on the ventilation system, especially the air inlet part. Moreover, the airflow reversal degree of the ventilation system increases with the increase of the outburst pressure or decreases with the length of the excavation roadway. Coal and gas outburst is a kind of complex dynamic disaster with short duration and strong explosiveness, and the modes and strength of the outburst are determined by the in situ stress, gas pressure, and physical and mechanical properties of the coal mass. In this paper, the status quo of research on the mechanism of coal and gas outburst in China is described from three aspects: the controlling effect of single factor, the controlling effect of multi-factor, and new understandings of the outburst mechanism in recent years. Firstly, controlling factors of coal and gas outburst are classified for an in-depth analysis of the main factors of the same type of disasters, and the research progress and new understandings of the mechanism of coal and gas outburst are systematically sorted out. Secondly, the influencing factors of the strength coal mass are analyzed, and the related issues of coal mass strength on coal and gas outburst disaster mechanism are discussed. The results show that the stages of incubation, occurrence, development, and stop on coal and gas outburst are affected by the coupling effects of in situ stress field, gas pressure field, and seepage field, and the coal strength becomes an important factor affecting outburst strength under the same in situ stress and gas pressure. Therefore, the scientific and reasonable improvement methods of such similar simulation experiment devices are proposed according to the existing experimental methods and devices, which is of great significance to provide ideas for the continuous transferring to deep mining and preventing coal and gas outburst in China in the future. Magma intrusion has an important influence on the physical and mechanical properties of coal and rock. In the area of magma intrusion, disasters such as gas outburst are prone to occur. Revealing its invasion law will be conducive to disaster management and energy development. For this purpose, changes in industrial analysis components of coal, mineral composition, major oxides, trace elements, and rare earth elements of coal under the thermal metamorphism of magma intrusion were analyzed. It is found that the moisture and volatile matter contents of the thermally affected coals in the mining face are generally lower than that of normal coals, while moisture and volatile matter contents are reduced towards to the magma intrusion contact. For example, the moisture and volatile matter of coal sample M01 decreased by 64.6% and 38.6% respectively compared with coal sample M05. During magma intrusion, some minerals remain on the surface of the coal body, resulting in changes in the mineral composition of the coal body. The decrease in carbon atom net spacing, the increase in crystallite aggregation and ductility, and aromaticity in thermally affected coals have a positive impact on the improvement of coal metamorphism. Due to the influences of magmatic intrusion, the variation rules of major oxides in coal are different, and the closer to the magmatic intrusion zone, the easier the major oxides are to be depleted. However, magma intrusion will not lead to the loss of all major oxides in thermally affected coals, such as content of CaO is 54.8%, which is higher than that of coal not affected by magmatic hydrothermal fluid. Most of the trace elements in the thermally affected coals of the No. 9 coal seam are depleted. The contents of rare earth elements are low on the whole coalbasis, with an average of 29.48 μg/g, and the distribution pattern towards to magmatic intrusion shows a wide and gentle "V" curve with left high and right low, showing the characteristics of enrichment of light rare earth elements. China's coal mines have to extend to greater depths for the exploitation of more mineral resources, and they have suffered catastrophic mining-induced disasters, such as rockbursts, water inrushes, coal and gas outbursts, and roof fall accidents. The microseismic monitoring technique is a practical tool for mine safety management, which is extensively utilized in many Chinese coal mines. Microcracks of coal/rock masses are recorded as microseismicities in the field, and the potential mining-induced instabilities can be assessed by in-depth analysis of the microseismic parameters. This study provides a state-of-the-art review of the achievements and developments of the microseismic monitoring technique in coal mines. It also presents some prospects for improving the location accuracy of microseismicity, efficient and intelligent processing of the microseismic data, comprehensive assessment of coal/rock instabilities, and development of new microseismic monitoring equipment. The finite difference model and particle flow model were constructed to reproduce the process of coal and gas outburst in front of the tunnel. The reliability of the particle flow model was verified by studying the internal stress, gas pressure, and related parameters of gas and coal two-phase flow. Then the process of coal and gas outburst is described from a microscopic perspective. The results show that the particle flow numerical model of coal and gas outburst is in line with reality and can intuitively and conveniently monitor relevant parameters; The concentrated stress caused by excavation of tunnels can reach 1.2 times the in-situ stress; High stress causes the adhesion between coal particles to break down, which is the main reason for the initiation of coal and gas outbursts; The intermittent breakthrough of gas on the coal particle collection that blocks the release channel has caused pulsating characteristics of coal and gas outbursts. The gas contained in coal plays a crucial role in triggering coal and gas outbursts. During an outburst, a large quantity of gas originally absorbed by coal is released from pulverized coal. The role this part of the gas plays in the process of coal and gas outbursts has not been clearly elucidated yet. Therefore, investigating the changes in gas desorption rate from coal particles of different sizes could provide some meaningful insights into the outburst process and improve our understanding of the outburst mechanism. First, combining the diffusivity of coal of different particle sizes and the distribution function of broken coal, we present a gas desorption model for fragmented gas-bearing coal that can quantify gas desorption from coal particles within a certain range of size. Second, the gas desorption rate ratio is defined as the ratio of the gas desorption rate from coal being crushed to that from coal before breaking. The desorption rate ratio is mainly determined by the desorption index (γ) and the granularity distribution index (α). Within the limit range of coal particle sizes, the ratio of effective diffusion coefficient for coal particles with different sizes is directly proportional to the reciprocal of the ratio of particle sizes. Under uniform particle size conditions before and after fragmentation, the gas desorption rate ratio is the square root of the reciprocal of the effective diffusion coefficient. The paper presents the results of numerical simulations into the distribution of methane concentration at the intersection of two excavations with a fan (turned on) giving the air stream to the area of the crossing. Assumed case represents emergency situation related to the unexpected flow of methane from an excavation and its mixing with fresh air. It is possible when sudden gas outburst takes place, methane leaks from methane drainage system or gas leaks out the pipelines of underground coal gasification devices. Three options were considered - corresponding to three different speeds of the jet fan. They represent three stages of fan work. First - low air speed is forced by a pneumatic fan, when electricity is cut off after high methane concentration detection. Medium speed can be forced by pneumatic-electric device when methane concentration allows to turn on the electricity. Third, the highest speed is for electric fans. Simulations were carried out in the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) belongs to the group of programs Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The governing equations are being solved in a numerical way. Coal structure could be roughly divided into four types. Among them, the two kinds of tectonic coal face a high risk of heat-induced gas outburst, which arises from the unfavorable temperature conditions in the coal structure. However, there is not yet an efficient way to identify the type of coal structure. The adjacent types of coal structures are often misjudged. The lack of an efficient identification method hinders the prevention of heat-induced gas outburst, making it difficult to realize energy-efficient and safe mining. To solve the problem, this paper first theoretically analyzes the ultrasonic properties of different types of coals, and applies backpropagation neural network (BPNN) to build up an intelligent identification model for the type of coal structure. Specifically, the characteristic parameters of ultrasonic signal were taken as the basis for judging the type of coal structure, the identification algorithm of BPNN was adopted to accurately identify the structure type of coal, and then the heat-induced gas outburst risk of the coal was evaluated preliminarily. Experimental results show that the proposed model could accurately identify the type of coal structure, and even differentiate between adjacent types of coals. Protective layer mining (PLM) is one of the most effective regional measures against gas outburst, and the most preferred technique to prevent and control gas outburst. This paper attempts to disclose the effect of close-range PLM in Hezhuang Coal mine, Western Henan Coalfield. Firstly, coal seam I 7 was selected as the lower protective layer, and coal seam II 1 was taken as the overlying coal seam. Considering the situation of actual production, a simulation model for lower PLM was established on Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in 3 Dimensions (FLAC3D). The established model was adopted to simulate the mining of the working face 11030# of the lower protective layer (I 7) at the mining depth of 50, 100, 200 and 250 m, respectively. Through the simulation, the authors summarized the laws of stress evolution and deformation of the working face 11030# of the overlying coal seam (II 1) in the upper part of the stope. The research results are as follows: After the lower PLM, the stress distribution of 11030# II 1 in the strike direction can be divided into three parts from the open-off cut to the stopping line: original stress zone, pressure relief zone and stress concentration zone; the stress distribution of 11030# II 1 in the dip direction can also be divided into the three parts from the top to the bottom. However, the stress distribution in the dip direction is less uniform than that in the strike direction. Meanwhile, the 11030# II 1 had an unobvious deformation in the original stress zone, compressive deformation in the stress concentration zone, and expansive deformation in the pressure relief zone; the maximum expansive deformation was observed in the middle of the pressure relief zone. The authors of the present paper designed and constructed a prototype of an instrument which enables fully automated determination of the desorbable methane content and effective diffusion coefficient in underground conditions. Due to microprocessor analysis of the recorded data and the application of the mathematical model of the diffusion process, it is possible to automatically determine the amount of methane whose release from a coal sample occurred before the sample was placed within a measuring instrument. It is also possible to carry out follow-up extrapolation of the recorded data so the time duration needed to determine reliable results can be reduced. The instrument was tested and optimized, and a number of copies sufficient for performing underground tests were constructed. The concept of the instrument represents a totally new approach to the observation of gas release from a coal sample. Instead of short-period measurements, virtually the whole process of methane release from coal is registered and analysed. This is possibly due to the use of a grain fraction lower than one mm which is presently applied for the sake of evaluating the methane- bearing capacity and desorption intensity. Risk prediction of dynamic disasters such as rock burst, gas outburst, and water inrush is closely related to the permeability evolution of coal seam. According to the characteristics of the lower protective layer mining, the basic assumption of gas-solid coupling model of the coal was proposed in this paper. The permeability enhancement coefficient of equivalent layer spacing was first put forward. Based on the three-zone-shaped dynamic evolution of the permeability of the overlying protective layer during the lower protective layer mining, the theories of seepage mechanics and damage mechanics were applied to introduce the permeability enhancement coefficient of equivalent layer spacing. A mathematical model of permeability evolution of the protected coal seam in the lower protective layer mining was established. Based on the engineering background of the lower protective layer mining in Changping Coal Mine, the numerical simulation using the proposed mathematical model was performed. The results showed that the stress and permeability of the protected layer in #3 coal seam evolved dynamically with the advancement of the working face of the protective layer in #8 coal seam. When the working face of the protective layer in #8 coal seam advanced to 80 m, the stress reduction rate in the relief area tended to be stable, and the stress in the stress reduction area was about 50% of the original rock stress. When advanced to 80 m, the permeability of the protected layer of the #3 coal seam increased sharply, and the permeability increased by 873 times. With the continuous advancement, the permeability of the protected layer in #3 coal seam tended to increase steadily, and the permeability increased by 1100–1200 times. The calculated magnitude of permeability increment is consistent with that in the engineering practice, indicating that the permeability evolution model is basically reasonable. In this paper, we focus on understanding the physical processes that lead to stable or unstable ionization fronts (I-fronts) observed in simulations of moving black holes (BHs). The front instability may trigger bursts of gas accretion, rendering the BH significantly more luminous than at steady state. We perform a series of idealized three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations resolving the I-fronts around BHs of mass MBH and velocity $v$ ∞ accreting from a medium of density nH. The I-front, with radius RI, transitions from D-type to R-type as the BH velocity becomes larger than a critical value $v_\mathrm{R}\sim 40\, \mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$. The D-type front is preceded by a bow-shock of thickness ΔRI that decreases as $v$ ∞ approaches $v$ R. We find that both D-type and R-type fronts can be unstable given the following two conditions: (i) for D-type fronts the shell thickness must be ΔRI/RI < 0.05 (i.e. $v_\infty \gtrsim 20\, \mathrm{km\,s}^{ -1}$), while no similar restriction holds for R-type fronts; (ii) the temperature jump across the I-front must be TII/TI > 3. This second condition is satisfied if $T_\mathrm{I}\lt 5000\, \mathrm{K}$ or if $n_\mathrm{H}\, M_\mathrm{BH} \gtrsim 10^6\, M_\odot \, \mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. Due to X-ray pre-heating typically $T_\mathrm{I} \sim 10^4\, \mathrm{K}$ , unless the D-type shell is optically thick to X-rays, which also happens when $n_\mathrm{H}\, M_\mathrm{BH}$ is greater than a metallicity-dependent critical value. We thus conclude that I-fronts around BHs are unstable only for relatively massive BHs moving trough very dense molecular clouds. Coal and gas outburst is a violent mechanical instability of gas-containing coal, and its mechanism is crucial for prevention of gas dynamic disasters. The macroscopic instability of gas-containing coal is the result of the expansion and connection of micro cracks driven by unloading induced tensile stress and gas pressure. This study is aimed at solving the problem of crack instability of gas-containing coal during mining unloading. To this end, first, the governing equations of unloading-induced tensile stress and gas pressure evolutions in cracks were built, and the dynamic evolutions and main controlling factors of tensile stress and gas pressure were revealed. Furthermore, the evaluation indexes of crack stability under tensile stress and shear stress were established, and the variation of crack stability during unloading was investigated. Finally, the phase diagram of crack failure mode was drawn, and the transformation of crack failure mode was analyzed. The results show that unloading-induced tensile stress is generated when θ > 54.73°, and it rises gradually with the increase of original stress, unloading rate, unloading time and crack size and dip angle. Overall, gas pressure in cracks increases first and then decreases during unloading. It increases gradually with the increase of initial gas pressure, gas desorption rate and original stress, while it decreases as the unloading rate gets higher (k from 10−4 to 10−2 s−1) and the dip angle gets larger (θ from 50 to 90°). With the increase of unloading ratio, the crack stability declines slowly first and then plunges rapidly until the crack finally becomes unstable. In addition, burial depth of coal seam, unloading rate, gas desorption rate and mechanical strength of coal have significant effects on this process. Different factors have important influences on the crack failure mode. With the increase of burial depth from 100 to 2000 m, the crack failure mode gradually transforms from tensile failure to shear failure, and the higher the unloading rate is, the more easily tensile failure occurs. With the increase of cohesion (0.1–2 MPa), the scope of the shear failure zone shrinks gradually, and the crack is less prone to shear failure. The desorption rate has a notable effect on the scope of the non-failure zone. Under a higher gas desorption rate, the scope of the non-failure zone becomes smaller, which is due to the greater gas pressure in crack for a given time. The research in this paper has certain reference value for further grasping of the instability failure of gas-containing coal and the mechanism of coal and gas outburst. When rockbursts and coal and gas outbursts simultaneously occur in a coal mine, changes in gas adsorption (concentration of ambient methane) and displacement of coal and rock must occur. The co-associated minerals in coal reservoirs can affect the mechanical properties and methane adsorption capacity, which are commonly disregarded. It is important to construct compound molecular structure models of coal and rock and conduct molecular dynamic simulations to gain a microscopic understanding of underground disasters. In this work, the molecular structure models of anthracite and coking coal–rock compound models containing different contents of calcite and kaolinite were constructed, and the methane adsorption amount and mechanical properties considering temperature, pressure, and mineral contents were simulated and analysed. The results showed that the methane adsorption amount of the compound models increased rapidly, then increased moderately, and stabilized eventually with increasing adsorption pressure, and the Langmuir fitting findings were good. The saturation adsorption amount of methane in the coal models linearly decreased with increasing temperature, while the methane adsorption heat increased. The presence of minerals adsorbed a certain amount of methane, and the methane adsorption amount increased with increasing mineral contents. The mechanical properties of coal molecules changed when mineral molecules such as calcite and kaolinite were present, which had opposite contribution effects. The addition of kaolinite minerals to the coal molecular model always increased the bulk modulus and shear modulus, while the addition of calcite decreased the bulk modulus of the anthracite, causing an increase in the brittleness of the models. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) technology can safely and efficiently increase the permeability of coal seam, which is conducive to CBM exploration and prevent coal and gas outburst. However, conventional HF fractures tend to expand in the direction of maximum principal stress, which may be inconsistent with the direction of fracturing required by the project. Therefore, the increased direction of coal seam permeability is different from that expected. To solve these problems, PFC2D software simulation is used to study directional hydraulic fracturing (DHF), that is the combination of slotting and hydraulic fracturing. The effects of different slotting angles (q), different horizontal stress difference coefficients (K) and different injection pressures on DHF fracture propagation are analyzed. The results show that the DHF method can overcome the dominant effect of initial in-situ stress on the propagation direction of hydraulic fractures and control the propagation of fractures along and perpendicular to the slotting direction when q, K and liquid injection pressure are small. When the DHF fracture is connected with manual slotting, the pressure will shake violently, and the fracturing curve presents a multi-peak type. The increase and decrease of particle pressure around the fracturing hole reflect the process of pressure accumulation and fracture propagation at the fracture tip respectively. Compared with conventional HF, DHF can not only shorten the fracturing time but also make the fracture network more complex, which is more conducive to gas flow. Under the action of in-situ stress, the stress between slots will increase to exceed the maximum horizontal principal stress. Moreover, with the change in fracturing time, the local stress of the model will also change. Hydraulic fractures are always expanding to the area with large local stress. The gas pressure in front area of heading face is essential to dynamically evaluate coal and gas outburst during coal mining. In this work, a novel inversion model of gas pressure in front area of the heading face was established on premise of the hypothesis that a time-dependent zone of steady flow exists within newly exposed face. The key parameters in the inversion model were obtained based on the gas emission models and field data of gas emission rate in different times, which were used to calculate the volumes of gas emission from different sources. The results show that the percentage of gas emission from the heading face, coal wall and collapsed coal ranges from 7% to 47%, 47% to 82% and 2% to 11%, respectively. Based on the calculated volumes of gas emission and gas pressure inversion model, the gas pressure was obtained and transformed to the gas content. The absolute errors between the gas content tested and transformed in every hour is 0.4%–33%, which proved the rationality of gas pressure inversion model. Furthermore, the daily drifting footage, the radius of gas pressure boundary and the gas permeability coefficient of coal seam were confirmed to have a great effect on the result of gas pressure inversion. The inversion results verify that the speedy excavation can increase the risk of coal and gas outburst. Low-rank coal accounts for over half of China's proven coal reserves. The possibility of coal and gas outbursts in low-rank coal is higher, especially in the m·agmatic thermal evolution area. The complexity of coal's molecular structure is one of the reasons for problems during the process of mining operations. Different analysis techniques, including XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, were used to obtain the molecular characteristics of magmatic thermal evolution coal samples and normal coal samples, so that a comparative study could be carried out to investigate the influence of the magmatic thermal evolution effect on the molecular structure of low-rank coal. The ranges of the aromatic interlayer spacing (d002), average stacking heights (Lc) and stacking layer number (Nave) of the thermally evolved coal samples are 3.41–3.51 Å, 22.76–27.02 Å, and 6.68–7.70, respectively. The ranges of the full width at half maximum ratio (FD1/FG) and the peak integral intensity ratio (ID1/IG) are 2.16–2.19 and 1.55–1.84, respectively. Compared with the normal coal samples, those affected by magmatic thermal evolution have smaller d002, ID1/IG, and FD1/FG values, but larger Lc values. The results indicate that the thermally evolved coal samples have more ordered structures and more developed microcrystalline structure sizes than normal coal samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal mining tends to face increasing stress and gas conditions when it extends to deeper levels. The mining-induced high stress and gas pressure concentrations often result in gasogeodynamic phenomena such as rock bursts and coal & gas outbursts. Over the last decades, these gasogeodynamic events have been observed more often in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland. With the increasing mining depth, these hazards not only become a serious safety risk but also represent a significant challenge for coal mining. In order to eliminate future hazards and improve safety in underground coal mines, it is necessary to apply particular methods for the prevention and mitigation of possible hazards during mining operations. Inaction or incorrect use of preventive measures may lead to gasogeodynamic events, which may result in accidents and material losses, thereby affecting the mine's economic performance. Several coal mines operated by Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. (JSW group), such as Pniówek, Budryk and Zofiówka coal mines have been identified as the area most prone to rock bursts as well as coal and gas outburst. Generally, the longwall panels often experience a high degree of these mining hazards. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to examine and optimise the possibility of application of prevention methods in order to reduce the frequency and scale of dangerous gasogeodynamic phenomena such as coal and gas outburst. As a main part, the field testing of the selected preventive methods that were conducted in the JSW coal mines. Based on the obtained results, the possibility of application of an optimal method for the prevention and control of coal and gas outburst in the geomining conditions of the JSW coal mines was discussed. Rock and gas outburst is a phenomenon in which fragmented rock material is transported deep into a pit. The transport of rock material by gas is a two-phase process. The article deals with the fluidisation of rock material. Considerations on the fluidisation phenomenon were carried out, and experiments were performed to help clarify whether the fluidisation of dolomite is possible. In this paper we suggest that conditional estimator/predictor of rockburst probability (and rockburst hazard, P( t)) can be approximated with the formula P( t) = P( θ)... P( θ)· P( t), where P( t) is a time-dependent probability of rockburst given only the predicted seismic energy parameters, while P( θ) are amplifying coefficients due to local geologic and mining conditions, as defined by the Expert Method of (rockburst) Hazard Evaluation (MRG) known in the Polish mining industry. All the elements of the formula are (approximately) calculable (on-line) and the resulting P value satisfies inequalities 0 ≤ P( t) ≤ 1. As a result, the hazard space (0-1) can be always divided into smaller subspaces ( e.g., 0-10, 10-10, 10-10, 10-1), possibly named with symbols ( e.g., A, B, C, D, ...) called 'hazard states' - which saves the prediction users from worrying of probabilities. The estimator P can be interpreted as a formal statement of (reformulated) Comprehensive Method of Rockburst State of Hazard Evaluation, well known in Polish mining industry. The estimator P is natural, logically consistent and physically interpretable. Due to full formalization, it can be easily generalized, incorporating relevant information from other sources/methods. Low-index coal and gas outburst (LI-CGO) is difficult to predict, which seriously threatens the efficient mining of coal. To predict the LI-CGO, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm was used in this study. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm was used to optimize the parameters of the SVM algorithm. The results show that based on the training sets and test set in this study, the prediction accuracy of SVM is higher than that of Back Propagation Neural Network and Distance Discriminant Analysis. The prediction accuracy of the SVM model trained by the training set T2 with LI-CGO cases is higher than that of the SVM model trained by the training set T1 without LI-CGO cases. The prediction accuracy gets better when the SVM model is trained by the training set T3, made by adding the data of the other two coal mines (EH and SH) to the training set T2, that only contains the data of XP and PJ. Furthermore, the PSO-SVM model achieves a better predictive effect than the SVM model, with an accuracy rate of 90%. The research results can provide a method reference for the prediction of LI-CGO. Tectonic coal seams are characterized by soft, low permeability and high gas outburst. The traditional gas control method is the intensive drilling and extraction in this seam, which is not only large in engineering quantity, high in cost, difficult to form holes and low in extraction efficiency, but also easy to induce coal and gas outburst, which is a difficult problem for global coal mine gas control. To solve this difficult problem, the controllable shockwave equipment developed by the author's team and successfully applied in the practice of permeability enhancement of coal seam, combined with the principles of shock vibration sound wave generation and shock wave attenuation and evolution in the rock stratum, a new idea of loading a controllable shock wave in the roof and floor of coal seam is proposed. The shock wave first attenuates and evolves into a high-strength sound wave in the roof and floor rock stratum, and then enters and loads into the coal seam to achieve the purpose of increasing permeability without damaging the physical properties of the tectonic coal seam and facilitating the opening of the original fractures. According to the new technical ideas, the implementation scheme and key parameters of the gas pre-extraction models in tectonic coal seam are designed, including the penetration drilling, roof and floor horizontal holes, shield tunneling and the high-strength acoustic wave of the working face, which provides a new technical approach to solve the problem of high efficiency and low cost gas extraction in the tectonic coal seam.
