In this paper, the coal pillar dam body of the underground reservoir in Daliuta coal mine, along with the residual coal and the mine water present in the goaf, were taken as research subjects, and a dynamic simulation experiment device was constructed to simulate the actual process of a coal mine underground reservoir (CMUR). The composition and structure of middling coal during the experiment were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), while changes in ion content in the mine water were assessed through ion chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Based on both the composition and structure of coal as well as variations in ion concentrations in water, the interaction mechanism between coal and mine water was explored. The results showed that the water–coal interaction primarily arose from the dissolution of minerals, such as rock salt and gypsum, within coal. Additionally, coal samples in mine water exhibited adsorption and precipitation of metal ions, along with cation exchange reaction. Na+ in mine water predominantly originated from the dissolution of rock salt (sodium chloride) in coal, while Ca2+ and SO 4 2 − were released through the dissolution of gypsum and other minerals in coal. In the process of the water–coal interaction, Ca2+ in the water body was adsorbed and immobilized by the coal sample, leading to the formation and deposition of CaCO3 on the surface of the coal, thereby increasing the calcite content. These processes collectively contributed to a decrease in the concentration of Ca2+ in the water body. Moreover, the cation exchange reaction occurred between Ca2+ and Mg2+ in mine water and Na+ in the coal sample. The presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+ resulted in their displacement of Na+ within the coal matrix, consequently elevating Na+ concentration in the mine water while reducing both the Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations. On this basis, combined with insights from the water–rock interaction, it can be inferred that the adsorption mechanisms involving rocks played a dominant role in the decrease of Ca2+ concentration during the water–rock interactions. The concentration of heavy metals in soil layers has increased due to the rapid development of the industry. Lead and zinc are two frequent heavy metal contaminants in soil. This paper aims to study the effect of these types of contaminants on different fines, including kaolinite, bentonite, and zeolite mixed with sand. First, mixtures of sand and kaolinite, bentonite, and zeolite were prepared, then they were contaminated by two contaminants of lead and zinc nitrates, separately. Consolidated undrained triaxial tests, Soil Conservation Service (SCS) double hydrometer tests, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Atterberg limits, and pH determination tests were conducted on the soil samples to investigate the changes in the strength and microstructure in the presence of heavy metals. In general, triaxial test results showed that various parameters influence the strength results of these heavy metal-contaminated sandy soil samples such as type, percentage, and structure of the fine portion, type, and concentration of contaminants, bonding mechanism of fine grains, and ion exchange capacity. For instance, in the presence of kaolinite (and kaolinite-zeolite mixtures), contamination with lead decreased the strength of soil samples, but in the soil mixtures containing bentonite (and bentonite-kaolinite mixtures), an opposite trend was seen. The plasticity index of mixtures containing kaolinite and zeolite increased in the presence of heavy metal contaminants, but it decreased when the fine portion of the soil was bentonite. Heavy metal contaminants decreased the pH of all soil mixtures and made them to be acidic. The results of the SCS double hydrometer test and SEM indicated that contaminated kaolinite and zeolite soil mixtures have a dispersed structure, while bentonite soil mixtures are not dispersive. The study presents a novel integrated three-compartment electrochemical continuous electrodeionization reactor that was constructed in a laboratory environment. In order to extract large amounts of carbon dioxide from naturally occurring oceanwater in the form of bicarbonate and carbonate, it develops a innovative electrolytic cation exchange process. At the same time, it produces hydrogen gas for possible hydrocarbon synthesis. The study employs the Box-Behnken experimental design approach implemented through the Design Expert software to investigate and optimize the performance of electrochemical hydrogen extraction from Ocean water from an integrated reactor. The integrated electrochemical continuous-type electrodeionization reactor comprises two cation-permeable membranes that operate as boundaries between three compartments: a central compartment and electrode compartments that house the cathode and anode, each of which may reverse polarity. These membranes are made of gel polystyrene cross-linked with divinylbenzene, which has acidic properties that allow cation transport while inhibiting anions. The integrated reactor's electrode chambers are enclosed in plexiglass end plates and contain distinct Plexiglass electrode compartments. These compartments have mesh and solid steel anode and cathode electrodes, with an electrode active area of 176.71 cm2. The influence of various factors, such as voltage and electrolyte amount, on the production of hydrogen synthesis is examined. The study results demonstrate a maximum hydrogen production rate of 2.2 mg/min and a hydrogen production efficiency of 7.82%. The lab testing was carried out using experimental equipment to determine viability. The tests included 35-min runs that measured hydrogen generation under various parameters, such as applied voltage, electrolyte concentration, and pH levels. The ocean salt solutions of 0.5M, 1M, and 2M were initially prepared and evaluated for hydrogen generation. Each concentration is assessed at a voltage range of 4–15V, with matching solution pH values ranging from 2 to 7. Optimization studies were conducted to enhance the hydrogen production rate. The results indicate that hydrogen production rises proportionally with applied voltage and electrolyte concentration but falls with pH growth. This paper demonstrates that intercalating Na+ homoionic vermiculite with Fe3+ polyhydroxy cations (1:1 molar ratio OH− to Fe3+) significantly improved the affinity of the clay mineral-based sorbent toward phosphate. Kinetic experiments revealed that adsorption is fast, approaching an equilibrium within about 200 min of contact time, and that the rate-limiting step is the intraparticle diffusion. Adsorption isotherms fitted to the Freundlich equation and a two-site Langmuir model, consistent with the heterogeneity of adsorption sites. The separation factor derived from the Langmuir constant revealed that the adsorption was favorable and even irreversible for high-affinity minor adsorption sites. The adsorption capacity was 299 ± 63 μmol g−1 (9.3 ± 2.1 mg P g−1), a value similar to several other clay-based phosphate adsorbents. N-containing heterocycles (NCHs) are largely used as precursors for pharmaceuticals and can enter the environment. Some NCHs have been shown to be toxic, persistent, and very mobile in the environment. Thus, they have received increasing attention in the past years. However, the analysis of these polar compounds in environmental samples is still a challenge for liquid chromatography. This paper investigates the use of mixed-mode liquid chromatography (MMLC), which has reversed-phase and ion exchange characteristics for measurements of NCHs in water. NCHs with low pKa (i.e., < 2.5) display mainly reversed-phase interactions (neutral species) with the stationary phase and those with higher pKa (i.e., > 5) interact by a mixture of reversed-phase/ion exchange/HILIC mechanism. It was also shown that the presented method performs well in the quantification of the majority of the selected NCHs in surface water with MDLs between 3 and 6 μg/L, a low matrix effect and recoveries in the range of 77–96% except for pyridazine exhibiting 32% were achieved. Currently, the deep geological repository approach for spent nuclear fuel is regarded as the most dependable and secure method for permanently disposing of this kind of waste. Among its key safety components is an engineered barrier made from compacted bentonite, which isolates the encapsulated waste from the surrounding host rock. As a result, understanding how bentonites react to varying compositions of groundwater is crucial. This is where numerical modelling becomes essential. It is generally approved by the scientific community to idealise bentonite as a material structured under a double porosity system composed of the macro and microstructure. In this context, this paper illustrates the capabilities of a double-porosity reactive transport model for bentonites fully implemented in the multiphysics COMSOL platform. A geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) was exhumed from a composite liner (geomembrane over GCL containing granular sodium bentonite) in the base of a landfill cell after 12 years of atmospheric exposure. The GCL was altered appreciably during exposure, despite being overlain by a geomembrane. Water content, hydration, and bentonite erosion varied considerably along the slope. GCL samples from the top of the slope were dry, with visible bentonite granules comparable to those in a virgin GCL as if the bentonite had not hydrated. No substantial change in exchange complex or swell index (SI) occurred in samples from the top of the slope, and hydraulic conductivity of these samples to water was low (≈10−11 m/s). GCL samples from the toe of the slope varied considerably, from moist and soft to dry and cracked, but all had undergone hydration, and had low SI, a small mole fraction of monovalent cations in the exchange complex, and high hydraulic conductivity (10−8 m/s or higher). Bentonite in GCL samples from midslope had a cracked structure commonly observed in GCLs that have undergone wet–dry cycling. Midslope GCLs typically had hydraulic conductivity greater than 10−7 m/s. A sample from the top of the slope from a location near a GCL panel separation was comparable to other samples from the top of the slope. GCL samples from the anchor trench differed considerably, being very permeable or having low hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity was strongly correlated with SI; GCL samples with SI<15 mL/2 g were highly permeable, and those with SI>15 mL/2 g were comparable to a virgin GCL. The variation in SI was related directly to replacement of sodium by calcium in the exchange complex of the bentonite. Hydraulic conductivity also was affected by the thinning of the GCL. Salt stress seriously hinders the normal growth of plant seedling roots. Magnesium, as one of the essential medium elements for plant growth, can effectively alleviate the damage of salt stress to plant roots, but the key genes involved and their mechanism are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the related molecular mechanism of exogenous magnesium regulating cation homeostasis in peanut seedlings under salt stress. Firstly, according to plant physiology experiments, it was found that exogenous magnesium treatment significantly improved the tolerance of peanut seedlings to salt stress. After that, the transcriptome data were integrated, and further gene expression analysis showed that the expression of genes such as CNGC1, NCLs, and NHX7 was regulated under exogenous magnesium treatment, which effectively reduced the accumulation of sodium ions in cells. At the same time, exogenous magnesium also regulates the expression of genes such as ACAs and POTs and maintains the homeostasis of calcium and potassium ions in cells. These results reveal the molecular mechanism of exogenous magnesium regulating the cation homeostasis of peanut seedlings under salt stress, which provides an important reference for further revealing the key genes of salt tolerance in plants. Montmorillonite (Mt) is a ubiquitous swelling clay mineral and major component of soft rocks, sediments, and soils with an inherent capability to sorb metal cations. This unique feature renders Mt important for the enrichment and mobilization of environmentally important metal cations, retardation of heavy metals and radionuclide ions, the evolution of clay mineral itself, soils and sediments, and other geological processes. Understanding the interfacial interactions of Mt with metal cations at the molecular level is of fundamental importance in all these processes, but still remains elusive, due to the chemical and structural complexity of Mt surfaces and the diverse chemistries of metal cations. In this Review, we aim to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the adsorption modes of metal cations on basal and edge surfaces of Mt, local chemical environments of the cation binding sites, the driving forces for metal sorption, and factors influencing the dynamics of cation uptake onto Mt surfaces. Various surface complexation models [i.e., nonelectrostatic model (NEM), constant capacitance model (CCM), diffuse layer model (DLM), and triple-layer model (TLM)], advanced spectroscopic techniques (i.e., NEM, CCM, DLM, and TLM), and atomistic simulation methods (i.e., MD, DFT, and FPMD) have been used in conjunction with macroscopic adsorption experiments to gain detailed insights into the interfacial interactions of metal cations on Mt. Mt adsorbs metal cations via three independent pathways: (1) cation exchange; (2) surface complexation; and (3) nucleation and surface precipitation. The principal driving force for cation exchange is electrostatic interaction, while chemical bonding governs the two other mechanisms that depend on the basal and edge surface properties of Mt. The siloxane cavities on the tetrahedral basal plane exhibit the strongest adsorption sites for cation exchange and are greatly affected by the the degree of Al3+/Si4+ tetrahedral substitutions. At the amphoteric edge surfaces bearing hydroxyl groups, metal cations could form mono/multidentate surface complexes on Mt [010] and [110] edges. Ionic strength, pH, the presence of competing cations, temperature, and layer charge have been shown to affect the adsorption mechanisms and quantity of adsorbed cations. The updated information on the interfacial interactions of metal cations with Mt basal and edge surfaces presented in this review provides an improved understanding of the enrichment of metals, formation of metal ores, and natural biogeochemical cycles, as well as may promote technological and engineering applications of this important clay mineral in environmental remediation, geological repository, petroleum exploration and extraction, and extraterrestrial research. Bicarbonate ions (HCO3−) are abundant in karst water with poor lead (Pb) utilization and biodegradation. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of HCO3− on the Pb removal efficiency and uptake ability of Pontederia crassipes (a widespread hydrophyte in the karst area) from karst water. The Pb concentration, Pontederia crassipes morphology, and functional group were detected. As the HCO3− molarity in karst water increased (3, 4, and 5 mmol/L), the removal of Pb increased (85.31%, 93.28%, and 95.16%), whereas the bioconcentration amount of Pb decreased (573, 501, and 301 mg/kg), mainly due to the insoluble PbCO3 and Pb (OH)2. The Pb bioconcentration factor was the highest (15,564) at 4 mmol/L HCO3− due to the maximum strength of cation exchange and cell wall protein C=O. High HCO3− molarities changed the variety of positive ions of cation exchange (HCO3− ≤ 4 mmol/L: Na, K, and Mg; HCO3− > 4 mmol/L: Mg and K), and relieved the breaking of roots, stomatal closure, and vascular system shrinking. Moreover, high HCO3− molarities diminished the C≡C oxidation, enlarged the displacement of SO42− and C-O, and stimulated the methyl transfer reaction and the bonding between -CH3 and Pb. Lead chalcogenide nanoplatelets (NPLs) have emerged as a promising material for devices operating in the near IR and IR spectrum region. Here, we first apply the cation exchange method to PbSe/PbS core/shell NPL synthesis. The shell growth enhances NPL colloidal and environmental stability, and passivates surface trap states, preserving the main core physical properties. To prove the great potential for optoelectrical applications, we fabricate a photoconductor using PbSe/PbS NPLs. The device demonstrates enhanced conductivity and responsivity with fast rise and fall times, resulting in a 13 kHz bandwidth. The carrier transport was investigated with the field effect transistor method, showing p-type conductivity with charge mobility of 1.26 × 10−2 cm2·V−1·s−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In this study, hydroxyapatite/biochar nanocomposites (HAP/BC-NCs) were synthesized through a simple one-pot hydrothermal process and utilized as an adsorbent for the removal of copper(II) from aqueous media. Characterization results revealed that rod-shaped HAP nanoparticles were successfully incorporated on the surfaces of synthesized HAP/BC-NCs. A set of systematically designed batch experiments were carried out to determine the influences of adsorbent dosage, solution pH, ionic strength, and temperature on the adsorption behavior of the HAP/BC-NCs. Overall findings from batch experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis demonstrated that the potential mechanisms responsible for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous media are cation exchange between Cu2+ in solution and Ca2+ in the HAP on the surfaces of the as-synthesized nanocomposites and the formation of inner-sphere surface complexes on the surfaces of the HAP/BC-NCs. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption process follows the pseudo-second-order model and that the overall adsorption rate is controlled by film diffusion as the dominant mechanism and intraparticle diffusion as a secondary mechanism. Adsorption isotherms were accurately represented by a Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 99.01 mg/g at 298 K, which represents a higher efficiency for Cu(II) adsorption compared to previously reported composite materials. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the process is thermodynamically spontaneous and endothermic process. Overall, the findings presented in this paper suggest that HAP/BC-NCs have promising applicability for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous media as an alternative, low-cost, and eco-friendly adsorbent for environmental remediation. This paper presents the preparation and characterization of the smectite clay Laponite modified by intercalation of dimethyldioctadecylammonium chloride and the cationic dye methylene blue. The modified clay (Laponite Blue) has been characterized by FT-IR, X-Ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, SEM and solid state NMR. The exploitation of several characterization techniques and of an extended multinuclear and multi-technique solid state NMR approach allowed us to obtain detailed information on the intercalation of the dye in the clay and the structural and dynamic properties of the organicinorganic interface between the clay surface and the organic modifiers. Owing to their favorable properties, ionic liquids have recently gained recognition as possibly environmentally benign solvents. Now among the most promising industrial chemicals, they have already been labeled “green”, but this appellation seems due entirely to their very low vapor pressure. This growing interest in the various applications of ionic liquids will soon result in their presence in the environment. Therefore, reliable analytical tools for the environmental analysis of ionic liquids need to be developed urgently. This paper presents a newly developed analytical procedure for the enrichment of 1-alkyl- and 1-aryl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids from water samples. The method is based on cation exchange solid-phase extraction followed by selective elution. Pre-concentrated samples are subjected to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with an advanced methodology for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Saltwater intrusion into groundwater systems is a problem worldwide and is induced mainly by human activities, such as groundwater overexploitation and climate change. The coastal Los Planes aquifer in the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) is affected by seawater intrusion due to more than 40 years of groundwater overexploitation. A dataset of 55 samples was compiled, including 18 samples from our campaigns between 2014 and 2016. Several methods exist to define the impact of seawater in a coastal aquifer, such as the "seawater fraction", the "Chloro-Alkaline Indices", the "Hydrochemical Facies Evolution Diagram", and the "Saltwater Mixing Index". These methods provide reasonable results for most of the coastal zone of the Los Planes aquifer. A slight increase in mineralization was observed from 2014 to 2016 compared with the situation in 2003. However, in its northwestern part, samples from hydrothermal wells were not recognized by these methods. Here, the aquifer is affected mainly by thermal water with elevated mineralization, introduced through the El Sargento fault, a main fault, which cuts through the study area in the north–south direction. By considering known hydrothermal manifestations in the interpretation, samples could be classified as a combination of four end-members: fresh groundwater, seawater, and the composition of two types of thermal water. One thermal endmember with very low mineralization coincides with the thermal water described from the Los Cabos Block, where meteoric water represents the source (found in the Sierra la Laguna). The second endmember is comparable to coastal thermal manifestations where seawater represents the main source. Therefore, the higher mineralization in the northwestern zone is the result of the mobilization of thermal groundwater and direct mixing with seawater, which is introduced locally at the coast due to overextraction. In this paper, an anionic metal-organic framework Bio-MOF-1 (Zn 8 (ad) 4 (BPDC) 6 O·2Me 2 NH 2 ) and a luminescent complex (Sm 3+ doped TiO 2 , labeled as Sm 3+ @TiO 2 ) have both been prepared as previous reports and their photophysical properties are investigated. Subsequently, Tb 3+ is introduced to Bio-MOF-1 via cation exchange and the obtained Tb 3+ @Bio-MOF-1 can exhibit characteristic emission bands of Tb 3+ . Exposed to varying concentration of oxygen, the luminescent intensity of Tb 3+ decreased as increasing oxygen content. However, the luminescent intensity of as-prepared Sm 3+ @TiO 2 is enhancing with the increase of oxygen content. With the assistance of IPTES (3-Isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane) and TTA (2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone), Sm 3+ @TiO 2 was assembled with Tb 3+ @Bio-MOF-1 successfully. Cation mole precents (XCa, XMg, and XNa) on clay minerals in a siliciclastic coastal aquifer calculated from groundwater compositions, can aid in distinguishing fluvial from marine sediments and locate the fluvial/marine transition zone. The clay‐cation compositions of two clay‐rich siliciclastic coastal aquifers calculated from the composition of the groundwater were compared to the location of fluvial, fluvial‐marine transition and marine environments identified by traditional core, well log and paleontological analyses. The traditionally defined fluvial depositional environment is distinguished by clays with low XNa < 8% (for 92% of the samples) and high XCa from 55% to 98% with the remainder XMg. In comparison, the traditionally defined marine depositional environment is distinguished by clays with higher XNa > 8.0% (for 86% of the samples) and lower XCa ranging from 5% to 39% with the remainder XMg. The traditionally defined fluvial/marine transition zone has values overlapping the fluvial and marine end members, with 59% with XNa < 8% (fluvial) and 41% with XNa > 8% (marine), and XCa ranging from 45% to 98% with the remainder XMg. Calculations support that the excess Na (XNa > 8%) on marine clays can be retained for 10s of millions of years despite flushing with meteoric water, because of the high clay content in marine sediments. The calculated cation composition of clays deposited from river water are XNa < 8%. In contrast XNa 8%–54% is possible for seawater equilibrated clays supporting that the values found in the different depositional zones are possible. Calculated cation compositions might supplement traditional stratigraphic interpretations in distinguishing fluvial/marine depositional environments. Doping the semiconductor nanocrystals is one of the most effective ways to obtain unique materials suitable for high-performance next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this study, we demonstrate a novel nanomaterial for the near-infrared spectral region. To do this, we developed a partial cation exchange reaction on the HgTe nanoplatelets, substituting Hg cations with Pb cations. Under the optimized reaction conditions and Pb precursor ratio, a photoluminescence band shifts to ~1100 nm with a quantum yield of 22%. Based on steady-state and transient optical spectroscopies, we suggest a model of photoexcitation relaxation in the HgTe:Pb nanoplatelets. We also demonstrate that the thin films of doped nanoplatelets possess superior electric properties compared to their pristine counterparts. These findings show that Pb-doped HgTe nanoplatelets are new perspective material for application in both light-emitting and light-detection devices operating in the near-infrared spectral region. Sodic soils are characterized by the occurrence of excess sodium to levels that can adversely affect soil structure. In recent years, with the advent of alternatives for reclaiming sodic soils, such as the addition of by-products of flue gas desulfurization, fly ash, phosphogypsum, etc., using CaSO4 to reclaim sodic soil has again become a hot topic. In this study, cation exchange batch experiments and column leaching experiments were conducted to analyze the adsorption-exchange and dynamic changes of Ca2+ and Na+ during the reclamation of sodic soils with CaSO4. The HYDRUS-1D software was subsequently used to simulate and predict dynamic changes in Ca2+ and Na+. The cation exchange batch experiments consisted of six treatments with six CaSO4 rates (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 g/l), and the column leaching experiments consisted of two treatments with two CaSO4 concentrations (0.5 and 1.5 g/l). The results of the static cation exchange batch experiments indicated that the ion adsorption-exchange coefficients KCa-Na, KCa-Mg, and KCa-K were 1.9, 0.8, and 1.1, respectively. Applying CaSO4 and leaching are efficient methods to reclaim sodic soil. The pH and electrical conductivity of the soil solution gradually decreased with longer leaching time in all of the treatments. HYDRUS-1D successfully simulated both the dynamic changes of the Ca2+ and Na+ concentrations at different soil depths under different treatments and leaching time, and the effects of soil hydraulic conductivity and soil pH on the transport of Ca2+ and Na+. Engelhard titanosilicate-2 (ETS-2) has shown to be a promising substrate to load active sites for deep H 2 S removal (to sub-ppm levels) for gas purification applications at room temperature. Because of the high external surface area and the cation exchange capacity of ETS-2, active sites can be highly dispersed and very accessible to H 2 S molecules making it a novel support material for metal-oxide H 2 S adsorbents. In this paper, we report the room temperature H 2 S breakthrough performances of ETS-2 metal exchanged with Ag, Ca, Cu and Zn in comparison to a fully developed commercial H 2 S adsorbent (R3-11G, 36 wt% CuO, BASF). The results indicate the following trend for H 2 S uptake capacities at room temperature: Cu-ETS-2>Ag-ETS-2>Zn-ETS-2≈R3-11G>Ca-ETS-2≈Na-ETS-2. Cu exchanged ETS-2 displays the highest H 2 S capacity of 29.7 mg H 2 S/g adsorbent compared to the other investigated materials, making it the most promising metal-exchanged ETS-2 for room temperature desulfurization. The processes of sodication and desodication in soil influences agricultural productivity. We explored sodication and desodication processes in montmorillonite and illite with varying ratios of clay contents in 5% and 25 % on sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) of 7, 13, and 20 of equilibrated solution with 10 mmolc L-1. The sodication and desodication processes were observed to vary considerably, depending on the type of clay, clay content, and equilibrated solution. Sodication and desodication processes were different even for the same clay under similar conditions. The differences in clay sodication based on SAR of equilibrated solution were observed, and it was found that sodication progressed comparatively more rapid in illite than in montmorillonite. The desodication processes varied according to the type of clay and clay content. In montmorillonite, desodication progressed comparatively better at low clay content than at high clay content. In contrast, it progressed more rapid at high clay content than at low clay content in illite. However, desodication processes in illite with low clay content had similar tendencies as SAR of an equilibrated solution. As a result, the Gapon equilibrium constant was different for clay sodication and desodication processes even in the same clay mineral and clay content. The clay sodication and desodication processes as well as final exchangeable sodium percentage values were affected not only by SAR of the equilibrated solution but by the type of clay minerals and clay contents as well. This work describes the optimization of a methodology for the reduction of silver ions from silver nanoparticle suspensions obtained from low-yield laboratory procedures. The laboratory synthesis of silver nanoparticles following a bottom-up approach starting from silver nitrate, originates silver ions that were not reduced to their fundamental state for nanoparticles creation at the end of the process. However, it is well known that silver ions can easily influence chemical assays due to their chemical reactivity properties and can limit biological assays since they interfere with several biological processes, namely intracellular ones, leading to the death of living cells or organisms. As such, the presence of silver ions is highly undesirable when conducting biological assays to evaluate the influence of silver nanoparticles. We report the development of an easy, low-cost, and rapid methodology that is based on cation exchange resins to minimize the silver ion content in a raw suspension of silver nanoparticles while preserving the integrity of the nanomaterials. This procedure preserves the physical-chemical properties of the nanoparticles, thus allowing the purified nanoparticulate systems to be biologically tested. Different types of cationic resins were tested, and the developed methodology was optimized by changing several parameters. A reduction from 92% to 10% of free silver/total silver ratio was achieved when using the Bio-Rad 50W-X8 100–200 mesh resin and a contact time of 15 min. Filtration by vacuum was used to separate the used resin from the nanoparticles suspension, allowing it to be further reused, as well as the purified AgNPs suspension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Alternative Buffer Material ABM5 experiment is an in situ medium-scale experiment performed at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL) conducted by SKB in Sweden with the aim of analysing the long-term stability of bentonites used as an engineering barrier for a high-level radioactive waste repository (HLWR). In this work, four different ring-shaped Ca- and Na-bentonite blocks, which were piled around a carbon steel cylindrical heater, subjected to a maximum temperature of 250 °C and hydrated with saline Na-Ca-Cl Äspö groundwater (0.91 ionic strength), were characterized after dismantling. This work allowed us to identify the main geochemical processes involved, as well as the modifications in the physico-chemical properties and pore water composition after 4.4 years of treatment. No significant modifications in mineralogy were observed in samples close to the heater contact, except an increase in Fe content due to C-steel corrosion, carbonate dissolution/precipitation (mainly calcite and siderite) and Mg increase. No magnetite and a low amount of Fe(II) inside the clay mineral structure were detected. No modifications were observed in the smectite structure, except a slight increase in total and tetrahedral charge. A decrease in external surface area and cation exchange capacity (CEC) was found in all samples, with lower values being detected at the heater contact. As a consequence of the diffusion of the infiltrating groundwater, a modification of the composition at clay mineral exchange sites occurred. Ca-bentonites increased their Na content at exchange sites, whereas Na-bentonite increased their Ca content. Exchangeable Mg content decreased in all bentonites, except in MX-80 located at the bottom part of the package. A salinity gradient is observed through the bentonite blocks from the granite to the heater contact due to anions are controlled by diffusion and anion exclusion. The pore water chemistry of bentonites evolved as a function of the diffusion transport of the groundwater, the chemical equilibrium of cations at exchange sites and mineral dissolution/precipitation processes. High-F groundwater has caused serious human health problems worldwide. In this paper, a typical saline-fresh water mixing zone (SFMZ) in a coastal plain (south of Laizhou Bay, China) was chosen as an example to analyze and summarize the distribution characteristics and enrichment mechanism human health risks of high-fluorine groundwater. Thirty-two groundwater samples have F- concentrations that exceed the drinking water guideline value of the World Health Organization (WHO; 1.5 mg/L), Thirty-two groundwater samples exceeded the drinking water guideline value of the WHO (1.5 mg/L) and 43 groundwater samples exceeded the National Sanitary Standard for drinking water of China (1.0 mg/L), accounting for 68.1 and 91.5% of the total groundwater samples. The groundwater quality is relatively poor in this study area, and the water is unsuitable for human consumption. High-F groundwater is mainly found in the central and northern parts of the study area, and the concentrations increase in the direction of water flow. According to the analysis, the groundwater environment, saline water intrusion (SWI), evaporation and cation exchange are the main factors influencing the enrichment of F in the SFMZ. The neutral and weakly alkaline environment is conducive to the enrichment of F-. Cation exchange and evaporation are the most important factors in the enrichment of F. Human activity is not the main source of groundwater F. Na+ and HCO3− are adequately abundant in the groundwater environment in the study area, creating conditions that are conducive to the dissolution of fluorite and the release of F into the groundwater. An increase in the Na+ concentration and a decrease in the Ca2+ concentration can promote further dissolution of fluorite and other F-containing minerals, thereby releasing F- into the groundwater. Fluorite dissolution is prevalent in the groundwater environment, which can lead to an increase in the F concentration. This study is helpful to the development of strategies for the integrated management of high-F groundwater in coastal plains. The health risk assessment shows that long-term exposure to high-F groundwater can pose a great threat to four age clusters, especially for children and infants. The HQ values for shallow groundwater range from 0.32 to 2.89, 0.39 to 3.61, 0.56 to 5.11, and 0.42 to 3.85 for adults, teenagers, children and infants, respectively. The groundwater in this study area is not for irrigation and animal husbandry, which may indirectly affect human health.

Abstract: Using soil column experiments and data from natural watersheds, this paper analyzes the changes in Na/Cl molar ratios during a salting cycle of aqueous-soil systems. The soil column experiments involved introducing NaCl salt at various initial concentrations into multiple soil columns. At the start of a salting cycle in the column experiments, sodium was adsorbed more than chloride due to cation exchange processes. As a result, the initial Na/Cl molar ratio in column effluent was lower than 1, but increased thereafter. One-dimensional PHREEQC geochemical transport simulations also were conducted to further quantify these trends under more diverse scenarios. The experimentally determined Na/Cl molar ratio pattern was compared to observations in the annual salting cycle of four natural watersheds where NaCl is the dominant applied road deicing salt. Typically, Na/Cl molar ratios were low from mid-winter to early spring and increased after the bulk of the salt was flushed out of the watersheds during the summer, fall and early winter. The established relationship between the Na/Cl molar ratios and the amount of sodium retention derived from the column experiments and computer simulations present an alternative approach to the traditional budget analysis method for estimating sodium retention when the experimental and natural watershed patterns of Na/Cl molar ratio change are similar. Findings from this study enhance the understanding of sodium retention and help improve the scientific basis for future environmental policies intended to suppress the increase of sodium concentrations in salted watersheds. Abstract: The spatial organisation of swelling clay platelets in a suspension depends on the chemical composition of the equilibration solution. Individual clay platelets can be well dispersed, with surfaces entirely in contact with the external solution, or be stacked in tactoids, where part of the surfaces forms parallel alignments embedding interlayer water and cations. External and interlayer surfaces do not exhibit similar affinities for cations having different hydration and charge properties and the clay platelet stacking arrangement influences the clay affinity for these cations. This paper aims to establish the link between exchange properties and clay tactoid size and organisation for Na–Ca exchange on montmorillonite. Different montmorillonite samples behave differently with regards to Na–Ca exchange, from ideal to non-ideal exchange behaviour. A simple model coupling the tactoid stacking size to different Na/Ca relative affinities of the external and interlayer clay surfaces enables these differences to be reproduced. Abstract: In this paper, two LiAlH4–NaNH2 samples with LiAlH4 to NaNH2 molar ratio of 1/2 and 2/1 were investigated, respectively. It was observed that both samples evolved 2 equiv H2 in the ball milling process, however, the reaction pathways were different. For the LiAlH4–NaNH2 (1/2) sample, Li3Na(NH2)4 and NaAlH4 were formed through cation exchange between reactants. The NaAlH4 formed further reacts with Li3Na(NH2)4 and NaNH2 to give H2, NaH and LiAlN2H2. For the LiAlH4–NaNH2 (2/1) sample, Li3Na(NH2)4, LiNH2 and NaAlH4 were formed firstly through the same cation exchange process. Abstract: The efficiency of membrane chromatography is critically dependent on membrane module design. This paper discusses the vital role of fluid flow distribution and collection within a membrane module in membrane chromatographic processes. The performances of membrane modules of three different diameters based on a new design which enhanced both feed flow distribution and effluent collection were compared with corresponding conventional modules. Protein bioseparation being one of the major applications of membrane chromatography, these studies were carried out using lysozyme as test solute. The lysozyme binding capacities of cation-exchange membranes housed in the different modules were measured both in the breakthrough mode and in the pulse chromatographic mode. The membrane modules based on the new design showed significantly higher lysozyme binding capacities than the corresponding conventional modules. The binding capacity enhancement due to module design increased with increase in membrane diameter. With the largest diameter membrane module, the breakthrough binding capacity enhancements with the new design were in the range of 110–112%. With the same diameter membrane module the maximum binding capacity enhancements in the pulse chromatographic mode was found to be around 135%. Abstract: In this paper, we report an alternative procedure of cation exchange to introduce higher amount of [Mo3S4(H2O)9]4+ in β-zeolites than as reported for various zeolites (∼2wt.%). The parent β-zeolite (Si/Al=13.8) was partially dealuminated with a nitric acid treatment (Si/Al=15.0 and 18.7). The three zeolites of various acidities were used as supports. The addition of ammonia during the cation exchange procedure allowed us to double the Mo loadings (4.5wt.%) even with the most dealuminated zeolite. The acidity of the zeolitic host was restored after exchange through a thermal treatment at 350°C under Ar. Characterizations of the Mo/β catalysts by XRD, BET and EXAFS revealed that the structures of the zeolites and that of [Mo3S4(H2O)9]4+ were preserved during ion-exchange procedure. After the thermal treatment at 350°C, UV–visible spectroscopy, EXAFS and TEM showed that the [Mo3 IVS4(H2O)9]4+ was decomposed leading to MoIVS2 and a MoVIO x species probably grafted onto the zeolite surface. Whatever the exchange conditions, in presence or in absence of ammonia, molybdenum was mainly located on the external surface of the zeolite grains and a small fraction was inside the porosity as indicated by the TEM study. Abstract: This paper details corrosion that occurred in two identical process pressure vessels during the first 4 years of operation. Corrosion occurred at branch nozzles, shell sections and structural attachments, which resulted in unplanned shutdowns and subsequent repairs. In situ vessel modifications were completed in order to reduce the number and frequency of corrosion sites. Design and fabrication considerations that should be assessed in detail during the initial design phase are presented. Issues that can increase the shutdown frequency while decreasing availability and the inspection interval are discussed. Recommendations are made that are intended to alert designers, fabricators, owner/operators and inspectors to fundamental issues associated with lined steel pressure equipment to be considered where such equipment is proposed in a corrosive process environment. Characterization of natural salts from Bayah, Lampung, and Tasikmalaya, Indonesia has been carried out as a substitute for synthetic resins. The characteristics include zeolite activation with NH4Cl, and heated at 200°C, the bond stability test of 137Cs-zeolite, chemical composition analysis, surface area, pore size, analysis of Cs cation exchange capacity (CEC), diffusion coefficient (Di), activation energy (Ea), and absorption of three zeolites. To do this, pipette 50 μl of a standard solution of 137Cs from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), put in, 2 ml of 0.1 N HCl, and then add 1 g of zeolite and stir each for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 24 h. Based on this stirring time, the 137C isotope will exchange ions with NH4-zeolite to 137Cs-zeolite in the solid phase. The content of 137Cs in 137Cs-zeolites (solid phase) was analysed using a gamma spectrometer. The results of the chemical composition analysis showed that the character of zeolite from Lampung has a Si/Al ratio, with a CEC value of 1.448 mEq/g which is greater than Bayah and Tasikmalaya, while the Di and Ea values for the three select types were obtained almost the same. Moreover, the stability test of the Cs ion bond with zeolite showed no significant release of Cs ions from the zeolite structure. It can be concluded that the three soloists tested that the zeolite from Lampung has better characters. The results of 137Cs isotope separation in 150 μl of U3Si2/Al fuel solution post-irradiation using zeolite from Lampung and Dowex resins obtained almost the same recovery around 98–99%, so it can be concluded that zeolite from Lampung can be used as a substitute for synthetic resin in the cation exchange process for the 137Cs isotope in nuclear fuel post-irradiated. Rivers carry the dissolved and solid products of silicate mineral weathering, a process that removes CO2 from the atmosphere and provides a key negative climate feedback over geological timescales. Here we show that, in some river systems, a reactive exchange pool on river suspended particulate matter, bonded weakly to mineral surfaces, increases the mobile cation flux by 50%. The chemistry of both river waters and the exchange pool demonstrates exchange equilibrium, confirmed by Sr isotopes. Global silicate weathering fluxes are calculated based on riverine dissolved sodium (Na+) from silicate minerals. The large exchange pool supplies Na+ of nonsilicate origin to the dissolved load, especially in catchments with widespread marine sediments, or where rocks have equilibrated with saline basement fluids. We quantify this by comparing the riverine sediment exchange pool and river water chemistry. In some basins, cation exchange could account for the majority of sodium in the river water, significantly reducing estimates of silicate weathering. At a global scale, we demonstrate that silicate weathering fluxes are overestimated by 12 to 28%. This overestimation is greatest in regions of high erosion and high sediment loads where the negative climate feedback has a maximum sensitivity to chemical weathering reactions. In the context of other recent findings that reduce the net CO2 consumption through chemical weathering, the magnitude of the continental silicate weathering fluxes and its implications for solid Earth CO2 degassing fluxes need to be further investigated. The novel hierarchical Ni-Co sulfide nanosheet-nanotubes arrays were directly grown on Ni foam, as binder-free electrodes, have been successfully synthesized following a one-step facile hydrothermal method combined with a sulfide treatment. The initial value of the area capacitance achieved 2.28 F cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA cm−2. A high areal capacitance retention of 95.2% compared to activation-induced peak value is achieved after 3000 charge-discharge cycles, which is much better than counter Ni-Co oxide electrode (1.75 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, 93.2% retention compared to activation induced peak value). The outstanding and excellent super capacitive performance is ascribed to ion-exchange reaction, which induces a flexible hollow nanotube feature and show higher conductivity, compared with Ni-Co oxide NWs. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results confirmed that the synthesized electrode contains the lowest resistance at high, and at lower frequency, leading to easy penetration of electrolytes and fast transportation of electrons inside the electrode. In this proposed work, a one-step hydrothermal method has been followed, and provided for the sulfide-induced, with a noticeable electrochemical performance of nickel cobaltite compounds and supplying a promising route for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. Being abundant, sub-bituminous coal may be regarded as one of the most suitable alternative adsorbents to remove colour from a solution. Owing to its carboxylic acid functional groups, the coal surface may facilitate the removal of cationic species in the solution via a cation exchange mechanism. To enhance its adsorptive capacity, a surface modification is carried out using hydrogen peroxide solutions so as to increase the oxygen containing groups. The adsorption tests are conducted using methylene blue solutions in batch experiments. The results show that adsorption capacities of the raw and modified brown coals are increased from 188.7 mg/g to 454.5 mg/g, respectively. The elemental analysis shows an increase in the oxygen content of the coals from 38.58 % to 41.01 %. Additionally, the FTIR analysis also indicates an increase in the absorption at 1620.1 cm-1 for C=O stretching. The BET surface area analysis shows an increase in the surface area of 5.615 m2/g to 48.16 m2/g. Modified brown coals are applied to textile wastewater obtained from a textile factory. The UV/Vis absorption intensity decreases in the range of 400 nm - 700 nm. It can be concluded that the treated sub-bituminous coal has a potential to be used as a colour adsorbent. The exploitation of groundwater resources is of high importance and has become very crucial in the last decades, especially in coastal areas of arid and semi-arid regions. The coastal aquifers in these regions are particularly at risk due to intrusion of salty marine water. One example is the case of Tripoli city at the Mediterranean coast of Jifarah Plain, North West Libya. Libya has experienced progressive seawater intrusion in the coastal aquifers since the 1930s because of its ever increasing water demand from underground water resources. Tripoli city is a typical area where the contamination of the aquifer in the form of saltwater intrusion is very developed. Sixty-four groundwater samples were collected from the study area and analyzed for certain parameters that indicate salinization and pollution of the aquifer. The results demonstrate high values of the parameters Electrical Conductivity, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Cl- and SO42-, which can be attributed to seawater intrusion, where Cl- is the major pollutant of the aquifer. The water types according to the Stuyfzand groundwater classification are mostly CaCl, NaCl and Ca/MgMix. These water types indicate that groundwater chemistry is changed by cation exchange reactions during the mixing process between freshwater and seawater. The intensive extraction of groundwater from the aquifer reduces freshwater outflow to the sea, creates drawdown cones and lowering of the water table to as much as 25 m below mean sea level. Irrigation with nitrogen fertilizers and domestic sewage and movement of contaminants in areas of high hydraulic gradients within the drawdown cones probably are responsible for the high NO3- concentration in the region. Major ion concentrations were measured in 22 groundwater samples collected from a coal bearing aquifer in Zhuxianzhuang coal mine, northern Anhui Province, and the ion source and geochemical characteristics were discussed by the methods such as traditional graphic and multivariate statistic analysis. The results showed the presence of three water types, i.e., HCO3-Na, Cl-Na and SO4-Na. The surrounding rock weathering and evaporation, both controlled the chemical characteristics of groundwater, evidenced by the Gibb's diagrams. In detail, the features of ion ratios such as Ca/Na, HCO3/Na and Mg/Na show that the evaporate dissolution and silicate weathering were the dominant water-rock interactions. Multivariate analysis, such as correlation analysis, cluster analysis and FA analysis were also conducted to reveal the ion source in groundwater, and the Ca2+ and Mg2+ were mainly released from the dissolution of gypsum and/or magnesium and/or anorthite; while the Na+ is influenced by the weathering of feldspar and halite, with the cation exchange in a certain extent. In contrast, the Cl-, HCO3 - and SO42- are also controlled by the halite dissolution, silicate mineral weathering and sulphate mineral dissolution, respectively.
