Abstract

This issue explores the nature of childhood by offering selections that re/imagine the idea of the child as art maker; inquire about the relationships between children and adults when they are making art; and investigate how physical space influences approaches to art instruction. Readers are invited to join a dialogue that questions long-standing traditions of early childhood art--traditions grounded in a modernist view of children's art as a romantic expression of inner emotional and/or developmental trajectories. Selected essays create liminal spaces for reflection, dialogue, and critique of the views that have governed understandings of children and their art. 2. Creating Cast Paper Sculpture: A Simple Lesson in Papermaking and Moldmaking. AMACO[R] Lesson.

This lesson combines two significant art forms into one lesson. Students first learn the techniques necessary to create a relief sculpture terra cotta clay mold. Using that mold, students will experience the art of paper making and paper casting simply, safely, and economically. A brief history of the art of paper making is provided, along with samples and examples to show how the completed work will appear. Step-by-step instructions are included, along with a glossary of terms, lesson goals and objectives, background and preparation information, supply and equipment list, alternative suggestions, and additional ideas. 4. Before It's Too Late: A Digital Game Preservation White Paper

Abstract

Over the last four decades, electronic games have profoundly changed the way people play, learn, and connect with each other. Despite the tremendous impact of electronic games, however, until recently, relatively few programs existed to preserve them for future generations of players and researchers. Recognizing the need to save the original content and intellectual property of electronic games from media rot, obsolescence, and loss, the Game Preservation Special Interest Group of the International Game Developers Association has issued a white paper summarizing why electronic games should be preserved, problems that must be solved to do so, some potential solutions, and why all these issues should matter to everyone interested in electronic games and play in general. In the white paper, the editing of which was partially supported by the Preserving Virtual Worlds project and by funds from the Library of Congress, its editor and six authors (Rachel Donahue created a survey for IGDA members not included in this article) issue a call for heightened awareness of the need to preserve electronic games--endangered by relatively rapid electronic decay and intellectual neglect alike--for play scholarship and for the culture of the twenty-first century. 5. Museums and the Web 2003: Selected Papers from an International Conference (7th, Charlotte, North Carolina, March 19-22, 2003).

Abstract

This is the proceedings of the seventh annual Museums and the Web conference which took place March 19-22, 2003. MW2003 was the premier international venue to review the state of the Web in arts, culture, and heritage. The formal program consisted of two plenary sessions, eighteen parallel sessions, 35 museum project demonstrations, dozens of commercial exhibits, full-day and half-day pre-conference workshops, and one-hour mini-workshops combined with a day-long usability lab, a day-long design "crit room", and the Best of the Web awards. Participants were webmasters, educators, curators, librarians, designers, managers, and directors who work in museums, libraries, archives, historic sites, and the companies that support them. 6. Combining a hydrogel and an electrochemical biosensor to determine the extent of degradation of paper artworks.

Abstract

Paper-based artworks are among the most valuable assets for transmission of knowledge. Historical paper is composed of different polysaccharides (e.g. cellulose), binders, and glues. During aging all of these components undergo several degradation processes, as a result of external and intrinsic causes, and these can compromise the state of conservation of the document. In this work, application of a new biotechnological strategy for paper artefact preservation is reported. By making use of innovative and non-invasive materials, for example appropriate hydrogels, in combination with selective electrochemical biosensors, it is possible to simultaneously verify the degradation condition of the paper artwork and then to efficiently clean it, while monitoring the process of removal of both pollution and degradation products. In this paper, we focus on specific examples in which such techniques have been applied to paper artworks and that illustrate the advantages and potential of this biotechnology compared with the traditional paper-cleaning methods currently in use.

Abstract

This paper is divided into two parts. The first part, "Speaking Pictures and Visual Poems," briefly considers the origin of the term "sister arts." Discussed are the three main features of the historical relationship between painting and literature in the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain and draws out their educational implications. Part 2, "Teaching the Sister Arts," deals more explicitly with teaching. Examples of recent "pairs" of paintings and poems are discussed in which can be observed both the poets' responses to their chosen paintings and some students' responses to a painting and a poem it inspired. The paper concludes with a brief comment on the pedagogical benefits that can accrue from working with such materials and methods which, by their name, define the role of the collaborative reader of two interrelated art forms. 14. Drawing as Instrument, Drawings as Evidence: Capturing Mental Processes with Pencil and Paper.

Abstract

Researchers in the mind sciences often look to the production and analysis of drawings to reveal the mental processes of their subjects. This essay presents three episodes that trace the emergence of drawing as an instrumental practice in the study of the mind. Between 1880 and 1930, drawings gained currency as a form of scientific evidence - as stable, reproducible signals from a hidden interior. I begin with the use of drawings as data in the child study movement, move to the telepathic transmission of drawings in psychical research and conclude with the development of drawing as an experimental and diagnostic tool for studying neurological impairment. Despite significant shifts in the theoretical and disciplinary organisation of the mind sciences in the early twentieth century, researchers attempted to stabilise the use of subject-generated drawings as evidence by controlling the contexts in which drawings were produced and reproduced, and crafting subjects whose interiority could be effectively circumscribed. While movements such as psychoanalysis and art therapy would embrace the narrative interpretation of patient art, neuropsychology continued to utilise drawings as material traces of cognitive functions.

17. The Confucian Concept of Learning and the Aesthetics of Human Experience: An Eco-Ontological Interpretation

Abstract

This paper examines the Confucian concept of learning, or xue ([character omitted]), from the perspective of ecological humanism. Through a comparative interpretation, this paper attempts to disclose the significance of Confucian xue conceived as a practice of aesthetic appreciation and creativity, emphasizing in particular its function within an eco-centric worldview. The author reviews the relevant concepts of ecological humanism as expressed in the ideas of John Dewey and Thomas Alexander, then applies these as a theoretical framework for interpreting xue and its related concepts and practices as they appear in the Confucian text the Lunyu ([characters omitted] ). It is argued that xue is a process of developing and expressing virtuosity and artistry in the "arts of life," and that its practice was understood as a direct participation in the creative development of nature. The significance of such a concept of learning for contemporary educational philosophy is discussed in conclusion.

Abstract

Folk paper-cut art is one of the bright pearls, with a wide range of shapes and a long history, that serves as a model for modern visual communication design in China and encourages designers to think creatively. Integrating emotional elements into a design not only can elicit an emotional response from the viewer but also can make works created using traditional rational thinking more vivid, energetic, and touching. The main focus of this research is on the path and method of incorporating folk paper-cut emotion into visual communication design. The research status of various feature extraction methods and image recognition methods at home and abroad is examined in depth in this paper. For the recognition of distorted images that are not transformed by mathematics, some effective methods are proposed. They are used to recognize artistic images of paper-cut patterns because they can extract effective features that are not affected by translation, rotation, scale change, or small deformation. Experiments have shown that they have a positive impact. The use of folk paper-cut art in visual communication design not only improves the quality of design work but also generates new ideas for the transmission and development of other traditional Chinese cultures. Abstract

In this reflective paper we outline and discuss our art-based Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) approach. This exercise held two broad objectives. Firstly, to assist policy makers in understanding the types of interventions communities will find acceptable to address the problem of poor air quality, and secondly, to ascertain community views about our research plans to explore the impact of the planned interventions on neighbourhoods. We reflect on both our approach and the emergent conversations from the PPI activity. Attendees contributed to the process and stressed the importance of not burdening poor neighbourhoods with costly charges as that would ameliorate one health problem but generate others as a consequence of additional financial burden. Equally, they stressed the need to conduct research on matters which they could connect with such as the impact of clean air plans on young children and how information about air pollution is disseminated in their neighbourhoods as and when research findings emerge. This paper offers a conceptual analysis of the art-based PPI method and uniquely draws a connection to the philosophical traditions of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Specifically, we demonstrate how art is conducive to creating a dialogue which is specifically helpful for PPI purposes for both researchers and implementers, and conversely, why traditional conversational approaches may have fallen short of the adequacy mark in this regard.

Installation art involves using everyday objects and spaces in an unusual way to gain attention and encourage interaction. While arts-based projects have the ability to inform and provoke interest, few have focused on public health. Oddsocks was conceived as a public health installation as part of the annual Melbourne Fringe Festival, with a primary aim to raise awareness concerning the importance of exercise and foot health. Promoting such underserved public health issues creates specific challenges which have been typically under-reported. This methods paper focuses on how these challenges can be met through arts-based initiatives and arts-based inquiry.

Under the impact of electronic immediacy the world is being reorganized in sensory terms toward the primacy of the audile-tactile. In the educational system, emphasis remains on traditional methods of logical (visual) and sequential learning. The effect on literature is an increased interest in the spoken, as opposed to the written word. Through the arts, the sensory ordering of cultures can be determined. Examples from art and literature are compared to illuminate the area of sensory modalities that are encountered in writing and painting. Written in 1965, the report provides the rationale for including the study of the mythology and art of cultures alien to Western civilization in the social studies curriculum: Man: A Course of Study. The context of the course, a basic theory of myth, principles of art, and examples of Bushmen and Eskimo myths are presented. The author suggests two reasons for the study of the Eskimo, Pygmy, Bushmen, and a group of Australian Aborigines: the societies are relatively simple and their structure is easier to understand than the complex Western societies; and the study of hunting societies offers a student contrast with his own culture. Included in the section on mythology is a definition, a discussion of myth as communication and as document, and of structural analysis, lyrics, ceremonials, folklore of hunters, riddles and proverbs, rites of passage, and the functions and interconnectedness of symbols. In the section on art, the author outlines differences between myth and art, the ecology of art, art and cognition, art in instruction, and the functions of art. Tales included in the final section are the Bushmen origin of marriage, of the sun, and of death, and the Eskimo tale, Earth Gives Men Their First Children and a poem, My Breath. Abstract

The archive of the Universidad de Costa Rica maintains a nineteenth-century French collection of drawings and lithographs in which the biodeterioration by fungi is rampant. Because of nutritional conditions in which these fungi grew, we suspected that they possessed an ability to degrade cellulose. In this work our goal was to isolate and identify the fungal species responsible for the biodegradation of a nineteenth-century art collection and determine their cellulolytic activity. Fungi were isolated using potato-dextrose-agar (PDA) and water-agar with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The identification of the fungi was assessed through DNA sequencing (nrDNA ITS and α-actin regions) complemented with morphological analyses. Assays for cellulolytic activity were conducted with Gram's iodine as dye. Nineteen isolates were obtained, of which seventeen were identified through DNA sequencing to species level, belonging mainly to genera Arthrinium, Aspergillus, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Penicillium and Trichoderma. For two samples that could not be identified through their ITS and α-actin sequences, a morphological analysis was conducted; they were identified as new species, named Periconia epilithographicola sp. nov. and Coniochaeta cipronana sp. nov. Qualitative tests showed that the fungal collection presents important cellulolytic activity.

45. Virtual and Immersive Learning Environments Using ArtSteps: Exploratory Study with Teachers

Abstract

ArtSteps is an immersive virtual exhibit tool that is attractive and versatile; the user can present objects, artefacts, and art, whether it is work they have created or found in public resources. This paper presents an exploratory study on digital teacher empowerment using ArtSteps to promote innovative pedagogical methodologies involving Virtual and Immersive Learning Environments. The study involved thirty-five professors from different subject areas. The study was a qualitative and quantitative investigation aimed at understanding how virtual and immersive learning environments such as ArtSteps can promote teachers' engagement and whether teachers are receptive to using virtual environments and immersive environments in their professional practice with students. Findings suggest that teachers are receptive to introducing virtual learning and immersive environments in their teaching practice with students. Teachers' exploration of ArtSteps involved them in a virtual and immersive learning experience that motivated them to experiment with their students. A didactic proposal promotes an immersive gallery experience where different types of work can be showcased and viewed using curriculum content. [For the full proceedings, see ED639633.]

49. Finding Our Co-: Witness Blanket as Co-Curricular Making for Local Indigenous and Settler Relations

Abstract

This paper reveals the journey of two settler-researcher-educators supporting learning in preparation for Carey Newman's Witness Blanket Art Exhibit. Invited to create curriculum for students and educators of K-12 who would visit the exhibit, the authors describe co-curricular making as a living, re-generative, re-cursive experience. The learning alongside diverse perspectives of educators and community partners in circle--including Syilx Okanagan, School District, Art Gallery, Museum, and University-led to reconsidered understandings of co-curricular making. Relational commitments that invite co-curricular engagement with the Witness Blanket foreground Syilx Knowledge toward resisting colonial ways, and supporting tmix[superscript w], the life forces of Syilx Okanagan Territory.

50. Content Analysis of Graduate Thesis Titled World Literature in Turkey

Abstract

Introducing national and universal values via works of Turkish and international culture and art is one of the goals of teaching Turkish. Texts from different cultures are used in mother tongue education to compare students to works of art and culture that are universally recognized. People learn about national and universal ideals in this way by consuming works of international culture and art. Knowing the best pieces of international literature would not only broaden one's horizons but also enable one to comprehend and assess the sociology of many countries. By reviewing the content of postgraduate theses on international literature authored in our country, this study seeks to understand the literature and future research on the subject. In this study, fourteen master's and doctoral theses with the subject "world literature" were analyzed. Access to the database of the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education was granted for this investigation. The university from which the postgraduate theses were created, the department, the year of publishing, the type of publication, the institute, and the method were all examined. Utilizing the document review technique, data were gathered. The content analysis technique was used to interpret the data that was obtained. The investigation revealed that Osman Gazi University was the site of the majority of studies. The majority of the research was done at the graduate level and in a social sciences institute. It has been determined that the Comparative Literature Department produced graduate theses. The majority of studies in the area of international literature were completed between 2022 and 2019. Eleven studies did not specify their approach, however, it was determined that the other three studies used a qualitative research paradigm. [For the full proceedings, see ED656038.]
