Abstract

All institutions face the deterioration of works of art on paper. This latest volume in the Occasional Papers series is a practical guide for professionals needing to store and preserve works of art on paper. The author--Head of Conservation at the Minnesota Historical Society who has 28 years' experience as a practicing conservator, consultant, and teacher--makes the case that preventative care is a realistic goal and is easily accomplished and relatively inexpensive. She details the considerations of choosing proper storage locations and enclosures, and notes that following these guidelines is a practical, cost-effective way to contribute to the preservation of works of art on paper. Highlights of the discussion include: selecting storage locations; selecting storage enclosures; standard-sized enclosures; types of enclosures; selecting storage furniture; types of storage furniture; oversized storage; and routine handling.
