Abstract: International audience; This work aims at enlarging the sampling intervals in several state feedback control situations by designing a sampling map in the state space. We consider the case of linear time invariant (LTI) systems with state-bounded perturbations, and guarantee their exponential stability for a chosen decay-rate. The approach is based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) obtained thanks to Lyapunov-Razumikhin stability conditions and convexification arguments. First, it enables to optimize the lower-bound of the sampling maps by computing the adequate Lyapunov-Razumikhin function. This result can be interpreted as a robust stability analysis with respect to arbitrary time-varying sampling intervals, which may be useful in the case of uncontrolled sampling, or in the presence of phenomenon such as sampling jitter. Then, the obtained results are extended to design the sampling map in three dynamic sampling control situations: event-triggered control, self-triggered control, and state-dependent sampling. The results are illustrated with a numerical example from the literature.

Abstract: 25 pages; International audience; In this paper we deal with a semilinear hyperbolic chemotaxis model in one space dimension evolving on a network, with suitable transmission conditions at nodes. This framework is motivated by tissue-engineering scaffolds used for improving wound healing. We introduce a numerical scheme, which guarantees global mass densities conservation. Moreover our scheme is able to yield a correct approximation of the effects of the source term at equilibrium. Several numerical tests are presented to show the behavior of solutions and to discuss the stability and the accuracy of our approximation.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the discrete-time switched Lur'e problem in finite domain. The aim is to provide a stabilization inside an estimate of the origin's basin of attraction, as large as possible, via a suitable switching rule. The design of this switching rule is based on the min-switching policy and can be induced by sufficient conditions given by Lyapunov-Metzler inequalities. Nevertheless instead of intuitively considering a switched quadratic Lyapunov function for this approach, a suitable switched Lyapunov function including the modal nonlinearities is proposed. The assumptions required to characterize the nonlinearities are only mode-dependent sector conditions, without constraints related to the slope of the nonlinearities. An optimization problem is provided to allow the maximization of the size of the basin of attraction estimate - which may be composed of disconnected sets - under the stabilization conditions. A numerical example illustrates the efficiency of our approach and emphasizes the specificities of our tools.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes sufficient conditions under which a system can be made Strongly iISS in the presence of actuator saturation. This property was recently proposed as a compromise between the strength of ISS and the generality of iISS. It ensures in particular that solutions are bounded provided that the disturbance magnitude is below a certain threshold, and that they tend to the origin in response to any vanishing disturbance. We show that, under a growth rate condition, the bounded feedback law proposed by Lin and Sontag for the stabilization of the disturbance-free system based on the knowledge of a control Lyapunov function, ensures Strong iISS in the presence of perturbations. We illustrate our findings on the angular velocity control of a spacecraft with limited-power thrusters. In the specific case of linear time-invariant systems with neutrally stable internal dynamics, we provide a simple static state-feedback that ensures Strong iISS in presence of actuator saturations. This second result is illustrated by the robust stabilization of the harmonic oscillator. In both cases, we provide an estimate of the maximum disturbance amplitude that can be tolerated without compromising solutions' boundedness.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the design of anti-windup compensator for discrete-time switched systems subject to input saturation. The cases of static and dynamic anti-windup controllers are addressed aiming at maximising the estimate of the basin of attraction of the origin for the closed-loop system. Two aspects of the switching law are taken into account during the design: either it is arbitrary or it is a part of the complete control law. Theoretical conditions allowing to synthesise the anti-windup compensator are mainly described through linear matrix inequalities. Computational oriented conditions are then provided to solve convex optimisation problems that are able to give a constructive solution.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we deal with the stabilizability property for discrete-time switched linear systems. A recent necessary and sufficient characterization of stabilizability, based on set theory, is considered as the reference for comparing the computation-oriented sufficient conditions. The classical BMI conditions based on Lyapunov-Metzler inequalities are considered and extended. Novel LMI conditions for stabilizability, derived from the geometric ones, are presented that permit to combine generality with computational affordability. For the different conditions, the geometrical interpretations are provided and the induced stabilizing switching laws are given. The relations and the implications between the stabilizability conditions are analyzed to infer and compare their conservatism and their complexity.

Here, we propose a quantitative modeling framework that attributes specific parameter values to single cells for a standard model of gene expression. We combine high quality single-cell measurements of the response of yeast cells to repeated hyperosmotic shocks and state-of-the-art statistical inference approaches for mixed-effects models to infer multidimensional parameter distributions describing the population, and then derive specific parameters for individual cells. The analysis of single-cell parameters shows that single-cell identity (e.g. gene expression dynamics, cell size, growth rate, mother-daughter relationships) is, at least partially, captured by the parameter values of gene expression models (e.g. rates of transcription, translation and degradation). Our approach shows how to use the rich information contained into longitudinal single-cell data to infer parameters that can faithfully represent single-cell identity., Author Summary Because of non-genetic variability, cells in an isogenic population respond differently to a same stimulation. Therefore, the mean behavior of a cell population does not generally correspond to the behavior of the mean cell, and more generally, neglecting cell-to-cell differences biases our quantitative representation and understanding of the functioning of cellular systems. Here we introduce a statistical inference approach allowing for the calibration of (a population of) single cell models, differing by their parameter values. It enables to view time-lapse microscopy data as many experiments performed on one cell rather than one experiment performed on many cells. By harnessing existing cell-to-cell differences, one can then learn how environmental cues affect (non-observed) intracellular processes. Our approach is generic and enables to exploit in unprecedented manner the high informative content of single-cell longitudinal data.

Abstract: In this paper, we address the problem of numerical implementation of optimal control for switched affine systems with state constraint. In order to solve the problem we introduce a relaxed system and establish the connection between the solution of this system and the solution of the initial one. One of the main difficulties is then related to the fact that the optimal solution of the relaxed system is generally singular. We show that, using slack variables, a set of complementarity constraints can be used to take into account the singular nature of the solution. This formulation does not requires a priori knowledge on the structure (regular/singular) of the solution. The optimal control problem is then reformulated as a constraints optimization problem over the Hamiltonian systems and solved via a direct method. In addition, state path constraints are included. Numerical simulations for boost, buck-boost and Flying Capacitor converters, both in continuous and discontinuous conduction mode, illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

We show that a wide class of shared resources control strategies can be modeled by a stochastic jump linear system involving two stochastic processes. The class of systems we study encompasses Markov chains and independent and identically distributed switching processes. For these systems, we recall existing definitions of stability and robustness, by relying on the input-to-state stability (ISS) property. We show that, for the class of systems under concern, δ-moment stability is equivalent to δ-moment ISS and that they both imply almost sure ISS. Several sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee these properties. Anytime control design for a Translational Oscillator/Rotational Actuator (TORA) system is used to illustrate all these concepts.

The optimality of the switching law is also discussed and we prove that the switching conditions are optimal in some generic cases. This point explains why the obtained results over examples approach finely the optimal solutions. Finally, a design strategy is also given that extends the results to the cases where the subsystems are controlled linear systems.

Abstract: International audience; Finite-time estimation is a way to perform real-time control and achieve specified time performance. The Inria project-team Non-A is focusing on designing such "non-asymptotic" algorithms: there, mathematics (algebra, homogeneity) are combined with real-time applications (robotics, energy, environment)… For engineers, a wide variety of information is not directly obtained through measurement. Some parameters (constants of an electrical actuator, time delay in communication, etc.) or internal variables (torques applied to a robot arm, posture and localization of a mobile, detection of impact of angles in biped walk, etc.) are unknown or are not measured. Similarly, more often than not, signals from sensors are distorted and tainted by measurement noises. To control such processes, and to extract information conveyed by the signals, one often has to estimate parameters or variables. Estimation can concern parameters (identification), states (observation), derivatives (differentiation), inputs (left inversion) or noisy data (filtering). It means a nearly infinite number of results have already been produced in this area, concerning either control or signal processing… However, unlike traditional methods, the majority of which pertain to asymptotic statistics, the particularity of Non-A is to develop algorithms which converge after a finite-time. This is summarized in the project's name: "Non-Asymptotic estimation for online systems".

The stability and tracking performance analysis are presented for a novel force-reflecting emulator control scheme. The performance (stability, synchronization, transparency) is guaranteed by Hinf control theory and delay-scheduled Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals (LKF), which could improve the existing stability criterion. The design is achieved by using Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) optimization. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we address the problem of numerical implementation of optimal control for switched input affine nonlinear systems subject to path constraint. In order to properly solve the problem, a relaxed system is introduced and the connection between the solution of this system and the solution of the initial one is established. One of the main difficulties is then related to the fact that the optimal solution can be singular. We show that, using slack variables, a set of complementarity constraints can be used to take into account the singular nature of the solution. The optimal control problem is then reformulated as a constraint optimization problem over the Hamiltonian systems and solved via a direct method. This formulation does not require a priori knowledge on the structure (regular/singular) of the solution. In addition, state path constraints are included. Numerical simulations for boost, buck-boost and flying capacitor converters, both in continuous and discontinuous conduction mode, illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

We analyze the existence of equilibria in the associated firing-rate dynamics and study their stability by relying on a delayed MIMO frequency analysis. This combination characterizes the robustness property, exhibited by many practical systems, that the state remains bounded as long as the magnitude of exogenous inputs is reasonably small but may diverge for stronger disturbances. We provide three Lyapunov-type sufficient conditions for Strong iISS. One is based on iISS Lyapunov functions admitting a radially non- vanishing (class K) dissipation rate. However we show that it is not a necessary condition for Strong iISS. Two less conservative conditions are then provided, which are used to demonstrate that asymptotically stable bilinear systems are Strongly iISS. Finally, we discuss cascade and feedback interconnections of Strong iISS systems.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the problem of source localization in diffusion processes via several sensor devices providing pointwise concentration measures; sensors are assumed to be arranged in circular arrays, they can be fixed along the array or they can turn along a circular path defined by the array. The originality of the proposed source localization solution lies in the computation of the gradient and of higher-order derivatives (i. e., the Hessian) from Poisson integrals; in opposition to other solutions published in the literature, this computation does neither require specific knowledge of the solution of the difiusion process, nor the use of probing signals, but only exploits properties of the PDE. The Laplacian of the measured value is null on the studied domain; such an assumption is justified for isotropic diffusive sources in steady-state. The paper also presents some simulation results of a source-seeking torque control law for mobile non-holonomic robots looking for a heat source in a room, where the source is modeled as a small circular region.

Abstract: International audience; A class of Lyapunov functions is proposed for discrete-time linear systems interconnected with a cone bounded nonlinearity. Using these functions, we propose sufficient conditions for the global stability analysis, in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI), only taking the bounded sector condition into account. Unlike frameworks based on the Lur'e-type function, the additional assumptions about the derivative or discrete variation of the nonlinearity are not necessary. Hence, a wider range of cone bounded nonlinearities can be covered. We also show that there is a link between global stability LMI conditions based on this new Lyapunov function and a transfer function of an auxiliary system being strictly positive real. In addition, the novel function is considered in the local stability analysis problem of discrete-time Lur'e systems subject to a saturating feedback. A convex optimization problem based on sufficient LMI conditions is formulated to maximize an estimate of the basin of attraction. Another specificity of this new Lyapunov function is the fact that the estimate is composed of disconnected sets. Numerical examples reveal the effectiveness of this new Lyapunov function in providing a less conservative estimate with respect to the quadratic function.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, a new state-dependent sampling control enlarges the sampling intervals of state feedback control. We consider the case of linear time invariant systems and guarantee the exponential stability of the system origin for a chosen decay rate. The approach is based on LMIs obtained thanks to sufficient Lyapunov-Razumikhin stability conditions and follows two steps. In the first step, we compute a Lyapunov-Razumikhin function that guarantees exponential stability for all time-varying sampling intervals up to some given bound. This value can be used as a lower-bound of the state-dependent sampling function. In a second step, an off-line computation provides a mapping from the state-space into the set of sampling intervals: the state is divided into a finite number of regions, and to each of these regions is associated an allowable upper-bound of the sampling intervals that will guarantee the global (exponential or asymptotic) stability of the system. The results are based on sufficient conditions obtained using convex polytopes. Therefore, they involve some conservatism with respect to necessary and sufficient conditions. However, at each of the two steps, an optimization on the sampling upper-bounds is proposed. The approach is illustrated with numerical examples from the literature for which the number of actuations is shown to be reduced with respect to the periodic sampling case.

Abstract: International audience; A class of switched non-quadratic Lyapunov functions is considered in this article. The function is associated with discrete-time switched systems subject to mode-dependent cone-bounded nonlinearities and saturation actuator. These Lyapunov functions depend on the switched nonlinearities and on the active mode, instead of the time-invariant Lur'e-type function. The only assumption considered here is the mode-dependent sector condition, without constraint related to the slope of the nonlinearities. The stability analysis and control design problems lead to linear matrix inequality conditions. Optimisation problems are provided to cope with both issues in order to maximise the size of the basin of attraction estimate, which may be composed of disconnected sets. Numerical examples illustrate via comparisons that we improve the results of the literature.

Abstract: 12; International audience; This paper addresses the problem of stabilizing uncertain nonlinear plants over a shared limited-bandwidth packet-switching network. While conventional control loops are designed to work with circuit-switching networks, where dedicated communication channels provide almost constant bit rate and delay, many networks, such as Ethernet, organize data transmission in packets, carrying larger amount of information at less predictable rates. To avoid the bandwidth waste due to the relatively large overhead inherent to packet transmission, we exploit the packet payload to carry longer control sequences. To this aim we adopt a model-based approach to remotely compute a predictive control signal on a suitable time horizon, which leads to effectively reducing the bandwidth required to guarantee stability. We consider networks for which both the time between consecutive accesses to each node (MATI) and the transmission and processing delays (MAD) for measurements and control packets are bounded. Communications are assumed to be ruled by a rather general protocol model, which encompasses many protocols used in practice. As a distinct improvement over the state of the art, our result is shown to be robust with respect to sector-bounded uncertainties in the plant model. Namely, an explicit bound on the combined effects of MATI and MAD is provided as a function of the basin of attraction and the model accuracy. A case study is presented to appreciate the improvements induced by the packet-based control strategy over existing methods.

Grâce aux LMIs obtenues, une cartographie de l'espace d'état est réalisée hors-ligne: elle donne pour chaque point de l'espace d'état le pas d'échantillonnage maximal admissible, ce qui permet de réduire le nombre de mises à jour de l'actionneur pendant le contrôle du système en temps-réel.

Abstract: International audience; The problem of robust and guaranteed stabilization is addressed for switched affine systems using sampled state feedback controllers. Based on the existence of a control Lyapunov function for a relaxed system, we propose three sampled-data controls. Global attracting sets, computed by solving a sequence of optimization problems, guarantee practical and global asymptotic stabilization for the whole system trajectories. In addition, robust margins with respect to parameters uncertainties and non uniform sampling are provided using input-to-state stability. Finally, a buck-boost converter is considered to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract: International audience; Motivated by the recent development of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for neurological diseases, we study a network of interconnected oscillators under the influence of mean-field feedback and analyze the robustness of its phase-locking with respect to general inputs. Under standard assumptions, this system can be reduced to a modified version of the Kuramoto model of coupled nonlinear oscillators. In the first part of the paper we present an analytical study on the existence of phase-locked solutions under generic interconnection and feedback configurations. In particular we show that, in general, no oscillating phaselocked solutions can co-exist with any non-zero proportional mean-field feedback. In the second part we prove some robustness properties of phase-locked solutions (namely total stability). Thisgeneral result allows in particular to justify the persistence of practically phase-locked states if sufficiently small feedback gains are applied, and to give explicit necessary conditions on the intensity of a desynchronizing mean-field feedback. Furthermore, the Lyapunov function used in the analysis provides a new characterization of the robust phase-locked configurations in the Kuramoto system with symmetric interconnections.

Abstract: International audience; This article addresses the stability analysis of linear time invariant systems with aperiodic sampled-data control. Adopting a difference inclusion formalism, we show that necessary and sufficient stability conditions are given by the existence of discrete-time quasi-quadratic Lyapunov functions. A constructive method for computing such functions is provided from the approximation of the necessary and sufficient conditions. In practice, this leads to sufficient stability criteria under LMI form. The inter-sampling behavior is discussed there: based on differential inclusions, we provide continuous-time methods that use the advantages of the discrete-time approach. The results are illustrated by numerical examples that indicate the improvement with regard to the existing literature.

Abstract: Experimental techniques in biology such as microfluidic devices and time-lapse microscopy allow tracking of the gene expression in single cells over time. So far, few attempts have been made to fully exploit these data for modeling the dynamics of biological networks in cell populations. In this paper we compare two modeling approaches capable to describe cell-to-cell variability: Mixed-Effects (ME) models and the Chemical Master Equation (CME). We discuss how network parameters can be identified from experimental data and use real data of the HOG pathway in yeast to assess model quality. For CME we rely on the identification approach proposed by Zechner et al. (PNAS, 2012), based on moments of the probability distribution involved in the CME. ME and moment-based (MB) inference will be also contrasted in terms of general features and possible uses in biology.; Des techniques expérimentales en biologie comme la combinaison de microfluidique et de vidéo-microscopie permettent de suivre l'expression des gènes au cours du temps dans des cellules individuelles. L'utilisation de ces données pour modéliser la dynamique des réseaux biologiques dans des populations de cellules reste encore rare. Dans ce travail, nous comparons deux approches de modélisation capables de décrire la variabilité entre cellules: modèles à effets mixtes (ME) et modèles d'équations maitresse chimique (CME). Nous discutons de l'identification des paramètres des modèles à partir de données expérimentales et utilisons des données réelles de la voie de transduction du signal HOG chez la levure pour tester la qualité des modèles. Pour la CME, nous utilisons l'approche d'identification proposée par Zechner et al. (PNAS, 2012), basée sur les moments des distributions de probabilités de la CME. Plus généralement, nous discutons également des spécificités de ces deux méthodes d'inférence et de leurs utilisations possibles en biologie.
