SUSTAINABLE development ,ENERGY development ,COVID-19 pandemic ,POWER resources ,HEAT exchangers - Abstract
Sustainability has become a broad societal goal, aiming to ensure that human beings coexist safely and harmoniously with nature over a longer time. The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy is coming to an end. The development and merits of sustainable energy supply, advanced technology, and economic features have received significant attention over the last few decades. However, significant gaps still exist with respect to how to design, construct, and implement hybrid and optimal energy systems with the lowest investment and cost. Since 2002, the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conferences have become a significant meeting venue for researchers to introduce, discuss, share, and disseminate novel concepts and ideas. This paper presents an overview of published articles in the Special Issues (SIs) dedicated by the series SDEWES conferences, especially those published in Energies recommended by the 16th SDEWES Conference, which was held on 10–15 October 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This SI in Energies focused on four main topics, including the application of renewable bioenergy, component enhancement in renewable systems, sustainable development for buildings and economic analysis and evaluation for sustainability. The collected papers provide insight into the topics related to recent advances in improving sustainable efficiency, including studies on waste-to-wealth techniques, utilization of hybrid bioenergy systems, heat exchangers and other components for performance enhancement, energy supply and demand analysis, low-temperature DHC systems, techno-economic assessment, and environmental evaluation. This Special Issue originates from the international conference EuCNC 2020 (European Conference on Networks and Communications), which was planned to be held in June 2020 in Dubrovnik (Croatia), but due to the COVID-19 pandemic was changed to an Online Conference. The Technical Programme Chairs of the conference have selected the best papers and invited authors to submit an extended version of their paper, by at least one third of their length. Only the top ranked papers were invited to this Special Issue, in order to fulfil its purpose. The main target was to collect and present quality research contributions in the most recent activities related to systems and networks beyond 5G, already presenting ideas for 6G. Through this Special Issue, the state-of-the-art is presented and the new challenges are highlighted, regarding the latest advances on systems and network perspectives that are already being positioned beyond 5G, bridging as well with the evolution of 5G, including applications and trials. Therefore, the motivation for this Special Issue is to present the latest and finest results on the evolution of research of mobile and wireless communications, coming, but not exclusively (since EuCNC is a conference open to the whole research community), from projects co-financed by the European Commission within its R&D programmes. LANDSCAPE assessment ,LANDSCAPES ,ISLANDS ,RESTRAINING orders - Abstract
This paper aims to present an approach to landscape evaluation, on the example of the island of Jakljan, which is a part of the Elaphiti Islands in the Dubrovnik Neretva County. Special emphasis is placed on the evaluation of natural, cultural, and visual qualities, which were identified in order to direct their protection in future development processes taking into account their role in the landscape. After determining the main qualities, the submodels of individual landscape qualities were determined. Next, the relationship between landscape quality and potential quality degradation was analysed, and a database of spatial data was prepared. Natural qualities included biodiversity valuation and perception of naturalness of the most dominant landscape patterns in this area. Cultural qualities included agricultural landscape evaluation and cultural-historic heritage. Finally, based on the evaluation of the visual units and visually attractive and authentic elements of the landscape and the analysis of visual exposure, a final model of visual landscape qualities was carried out. Evaluation maps were obtained using the GIS tools. The paper pointed out the most important values which must not be lost if the existing character of the space is to be preserved. As the planning profession begins to embrace food and agriculture as important opportunities for sustainable cities and towns, planners are searching for ideas that can be implemented at the local level. Food hubs are gaining popularity as a way to build strong local food systems and healthy communities. Food hubs are innovations in local food systems that serve as an alternative to the conventional food distribution system. Hubs help connect small farmers with local markets and increase food access for local residents. But it is clearly that focusing on the local cuisine as a tourist destination product is worthwhile. Food hub operators are skilled business people who have identified a challenge how to satisfy retail and institutional market demand to source from small and middle size producers and have deftly come up with regionally appropriate solutions that not only result in positive economic outcomes but also provide valuable services to producers and their wider community. Food hub operators represent a new kind of food entrepreneur, one that is increasingly demonstrating a financially sound business model that can be both market and mission driven. This paper examines the importance of the establishment of a food hub for the development of entrepreneurship and innovation in gastronomy, i.e. for the development of the gastronomic offer in Dubrovnik. The survey was conducted in June 2022 among 93 graduates of the School of Tourism and Hospitality to find out their opinion about the establishment of a food hub and whether they are inclined to become its users. Research has proven that most graduates would use food hub services and as such they are necessary for business creation and innovation in the food service industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cruising tourism is becoming increasingly popular, the number of cruises having seen a continuous increase since the 1970s. In Croatia as well there is an upward trend in the number of cruise passengers and ports. Of all Croatian ports, it is the port of Dubrovnik that has had the most calls by foreign cruisers. The paper analyses the available statistical data on the maritime cruise market in Europe with special reference to the Mediterranean countries. In the national context, a presentation of cruise traffic in the port of Dubrovnik is given. Although this type of tourism contributes to the development and improvement of the economy, it also has a negative impact on the environment through air pollution by CO2 emissions, subsequently affecting human health as well. The authors investigate the level of CO2 emissions in the area of the port of Dubrovnik. CO2 emissions were calculated based on cruiser activity, the calculations being based on CO2 emissions for three ship navigation modes - slow steaming on arrival and departure, manoeuvring on arrival and departure, and for a berthed ship. The aim of the research was to provide a better insight in the emission inventories in this area. This research can also be applied to other port areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper represents the first attempt to specifically and comprehensively explore the right of shipwreck (ius naufragii) in medieval Serbia. In the opening section, the wider comparative context is established through an overview of the presence of this legal custom in Europe and the Mediterranean during the ancient and medieval periods. This is followed by a discussion of the available information on its presence in Serbia, which spans the period from the early 14
th to the mid-15th century and includes examples both of its exercise and of regulations by which it was abolished in regard to communities focused on maritime trade -- Venice and Dubrovnik. The final section is dedicated to the examination of its status as a regal right of Serbian medieval rulers and the circumstances and mechanisms of its abolition regarding Venetian and Dubrovnik ships. We analysed the status and distribution of the Sage Skipper Muschampia proto (Ochsenheimer, 1808), a rather rare and local Hesperiidae species at the edge of its range in the north-western part of the Balkan peninsula, mainly Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. In order to determine the species' presence in the region, we mapped the occurrence of its hostplant, Jerusalem Sage Phlomis fruticosa Linnaeus (Lamiaceae). We also summarized all the available knowledge on M. proto in the Balkan Peninsula and provided a literature overview for each country this species has been recorded in so far. In Croatia, the distribution of M. proto is very limited and is located only in the wider surroundings of Dubrovnik city. In the present paper, we also provide the first and only record of M. proto in Bosnia & Herzegovina, from a single locality close to the Croatian border in the Dubrovnik area. Due to its limited distribution in both countries, we propose that the conservation status of the species should be changed from none to vulnerable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the extent to which the filming of the popular television show Game of Thrones affected tourism in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Using monthly data and applying difference-in-differences, the study shows that the impact of airing Game of Thrones episodes filmed in Dubrovnik corresponded to approximately 5000 additional tourism overnights per month, or approximately 59,000 per year. Existing results were extended to show that the additional overnights mainly occur during the tourism off-season when transportation and lodging prices are ostensibly lower, consistent with anecdotal evidence. The results provide another example that the filming of a television show can increase the attractiveness of an already well-established and globally-known destination. The results are especially useful for tourism industries in countries with highly seasonal tourism activities, like Croatia, that usually depend on beneficial climatic conditions, which are highly unpredictable and volatile. Filming of popular television shows and increased tourism may provide additional revenue for local economies and help smooth seasonal and yearly volatility of local income. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the environmental footprint within a designated area is determined by an inventory of air pollutants (including toxic and greenhouse gases) emissions generated. The designated area of concern is the port of Dubrovnik, a well-known cruise ship destination, where a major source of pollutant emissions is the diesel engines of the ships operating in the port. This research was undertaken for the port of Dubrovnik in connection with the development of the national strategy and the need for determining the inventory of air pollutants. It was conducted for the last pre - COVID-19 year, 2019. In this paper, after a short introduction, the basic data of the port of Dubrovnik and the marine traffic (predominantly cruisers) in 2019 are provided, obtained from publicly available data. Next, the emission estimate methodology based on a bottom-up approach is described. The inventory analysis was undertaken from the port boundary to the PWD (pier/wharf/dock) and back. The basic equations for evaluation during cruising, maneuvering, and hoteling are given along with the corresponding data. The aggregated results are presented in the form of tables and column charts. These results show that the generation of CO2 highly dominates. Regarding the pollution analyzed NOx dominates. The results of this study could be of interest for later studies on environmental pollution in the region of Dubrovnik-Neretva County and the Croatian coast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasingly impact of globalization process, that affect every field especially of social, economic, political, technological and cultural, have left a large imprint on the tourist market. Growing competitiveness between tourism destinations on the tourism market increases the role of marketing activities that work towards measuring the tourists' satisfaction of the tourism destinations and according that findings create qualitative tourist offer and at the other hand satisfied tourists who return to the destination. Satisfied tourist is the best way for the positive word-of-mouth communication. On the tourism market, under this conditions of growing competitiveness between tourist destinations, which try to find the best development strategy is one of the main problem for those who participate in creating tourist destination policy. Therefore, a main factor in the creation of tourism policies is the satisfied tourist who makes a positive image of a tourist destination. Tourist satisfaction has been considered as a main tool for increasing tourism destination competitiveness in the globalization conditions. That is connected to the efforts of having a tourist supply that can satisfy the expectation of tourists. Hence this paper explores and analyzes the relationship between aspects of tourist education, motivation, accommodation and consumption and the tourist satisfaction on the case of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County in a changed environment caused by globalization process. The aim of the paper is to explore which tourist segments are satisfied with actually tourist offer and to identify the main attributes of tourist segment that are satisfied which results with return to the destination. The research problem is the decline of tourist demand for travel to the Dubrovnik-Neretva County as a result of the global economic crisis. The purpose and the objectives of this research are to determine the level of satisfaction of tourist demand in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is important to find models that would maintain the competitiveness of destinations on the tourist market in conditions of globalization. STONE carving , *MULTISPECTRAL imaging , *MURAL art , *CATHEDRALS , *ARCHAEOLOGICAL finds , *PALEOMAGNETISM - Abstract
The paper presents the activities of the project Discovering the Old Dubrovnik Cathedrals in the period 2020–2022, including the activities of the newly estab- lished collaborations with Croatian institutions and international consortia. The main goal of the project is the expert and scientific analysis of all movable monuments and archaeological finds from the site of Dubrovnik Cathedral, which was archaeologically excavated in the 1980s. After 80% of all movable finds were analysed in the previous phases of the project (mainly the stone sculpture and the plaster of the wall paintings of the two churches preceding the Baroque cathedral), the collecting and analysing of data for the in situ finds was initiated in 2020. This refers primarily to the preserved parts of the earliest basilica, its sanc- tuary, and the side aisles. We present the preliminary results of integrating data for pre-Romanesque stone sculpture and different layers of plaster in situ, laying the foundations for a chronological determination of particular phases of church-furnishing that differs from the current ones. The obtained results will be complemented by the AMS 14C analysis of the samples of plaster and bones from the graves collected on the site, and by the OSL and archaeomagnetism analysis of the samples of mortar from the sanctuary wall and of the soil from the area of the main aisle of the church, which are all in progress. It is of great importance for further interpretation of the finds that the site was documented using contemporary methods: photogrammetric images of the sanctuary and individual burial units, and multispectral images of painted scenes and drawings from the side aisles of the church. CHAPELS ,TRIPTYCHS - Abstract
The present paper explores domestic devotional practices in Ragusa (modern day Dubrovnik) from the late-thirteenth through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Considering that important advancements in the understanding of domestic devotions in major Mediterranean cities have recently been made—particularly in Venice—the scrutiny of Ragusan sources enables further reflections on the same phenomena in minor Adriatic centres. Considering the paucity of preserved objects, and the fact that no late medieval domestic space of that time has survived in Dubrovnik, one must turn to archival sources to answer questions pertaining to the arrangements and uses of spaces of domestic worship. Three aspects are analysed here: privately owned chapels—adjoined to the dwellings of urban nobility, prayer areas and holy images inside the houses, and relics in the possession of individuals. In light of its source-driven approach, a significant part of this paper is devoted to the issue of the terminology of devotional props in contemporary documents. On a more general level, the paper aims at showing how, although no direct evidence of domestic devotional practices survives (such as in-depth textual evidence), all indications suggest that it was a deeply family-centred matter. Accordingly, particular attention is paid to the city's most prominent families, such as Volcassio, Volzio and Sorgo. Finally, the evidence presented in this paper, gathered from both published and unpublished sources, offers valuable material for reflections on the spatial arrangements of domestic devotional spaces, not necessarily confined to the members of a single household, but, through hereditary rights, tied to specific lineages. The Ethnographic Museum in Dubrovnik holds an extensive textile collection which includes a number of dresses and costumes from Croatia and neighbouring countries. Until recently, the costumes were displayed on mannequins created by the academic artist Zvonimir Lončarić (1927–2004). His sculptures are expressive forms made of terracotta, fibreglass, wood, metal, acrylic paint and other materials chosen for their visual appeal. Due to their importance, the museum considered the mannequins to be protected works of art in the permanent exhibition; however, they had a harmful effect on the costumes displayed. In 2018, after completing a series of conservation–restoration projects within the collection, it was decided to replace the existing mounts with new, museum-quality mannequins. Two project-based learning workshops were organised, led by a team of textile conservators from the University of Dubrovnik and the Croatian Conservation Institute, in collaboration with the curator of the Ethnographic Museum. This case study highlights the challenges of exhibiting ethnographic costumes by discussing past presentation methods and how new solutions have been implemented in line with the modern conservation–restoration profession. The new solutions take into consideration ethics, decision-making processes, and an understanding of contemporary materials and methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TRAVELERS' writings ,LANDSCAPE painting ,HISTORY - Abstract
The travelogue Lacroma was written in 1892 by Stephanie, the widowed Crown Princess of Austria (1864-1945). It offers a description of Dubrovnik's island of Lokrum, including its cultural and natural riches, as well as the former Benedictine monastery, adapted by Maximilian into a summerhouse. Anton Perko (1833-1905), a seascape painter at the court and a personal secretary to the princess, illustrated the booklet with landscapes and details of the imperial residence, which offers a unique insight into the relatively recent history of the island and its appearance at the time when it served as an imperial summer residence. This paper analysis the textual and visual segments of the travelogue and discusses its importance for our knowledge of the recent history and artistic legacy of the island. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

City bus transport electrification has a strong potential of improving city air quality, reducing noise pollution and increasing passenger satisfaction. Since the city bus operation is rather deterministic and intermittent, the driving range- and charging-related concerns may be effectively overcome by means of fast charging at end stations and/or slow charging in depot. In order to support decision making processes, a simulation tool for planning of city bus transport electrification has been developed and it is presented in this paper. The tool is designed to use real/recorded driving cycles and techno-economic data, in order to calculate the optimal type and number of e-buses and chargers, and predict the total cost of ownership including investment and exploitation cost. The paper focuses on computationally efficient e-bus fleet simulation including powertrain control and charging management aspects, which is illustrated through main results of a pilot study of bus transport electrification planning for the city of Dubrovnik. With the emergence of the legend of Saint Blaise, who protected the people of Dubrovnik against the Venetian menace, the city of Dubrovnik has been continuously organizing a feast in Saint Blaise's honour on the 3rd of February of each year. In addition to the social importance of this event, it also emphasizes musical activity as the daily Liturgy of the Hour is modified to fit the festivity and enriched with musical instruments which accompany the main services. In this article, we will travel back to the feast of 1588, where Serafino Razzi - a Dominican friar on a two-year canonical visitation to Dubrovnik - witnessed the festivity. What did Razzi have a possibility of hearing at that time in Dubrovnik, were there performing forces to support the festivity, and what did the liturgy look like on the 2nd and 3rd of February 1588 are the main questions this paper will address through thorough an analysis of Razzi's account, its comparison with other performances in European citystates, and extensive use of available sources.
