For decades, the internal medicine (IM) subinternship has served as a critical interface between undergraduate and graduate medical education. As such, the vast majority of U.S. medical schools offer this rotation to help students prepare for post-graduate training. Historically an experiential rotation, a formal curriculum with specific learning objectives was eventually developed for this course in 2002. Since then, graduate medical education (GME) has changed significantly with the regulation of duty hours, adoption of competency-based education, and development of training milestones and entrustable professional activities. In response to these and many other changes to residency training and medical practice, in 2010, the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) surveyed its members-with input from the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) Subinternship Task Force-to determine which core skills program directors expected from new medical school graduates. The results of that survey helped to inform a joint CDIM-APDIM committee's decision to re-evaluate the goals of the IM subinternship in an effort to enhance the transition from medical school to residency. This joint committee defined the minimum expectations of what constitutes an IM subinternship rotation, proposed recommended skills for IM subinterns, and discussed challenges and future directions for this crucial course.

The COVID-19 crisis has led to widespread temporary school closures and a deep economic recession. School closures have threatened children's ability to learn and later return to school well prepared. The impact of the economic recession is going to be even more devastating: first for students, but also for the ability of some Catholic schools to maintain their enrollment and remain sustainable financially in countries where they do not benefit from government support. This paper, the first in a set of two, looks at some of the likely impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on Catholic Schools in developed countries with a particular focus on the United States, a country not only hard hit by the crisis but also where Catholic schools are especially vulnerable to downturns. While Catholic schools may be able to respond to the immediate challenge of school closures among others through distance learning options, their ability to maintain enrollment during the economic downturn is less clear. How schools will respond to the twin challenges of ensuring learning during school closures and beyond, and remaining affordable for families at a time of economic stress, may affect whether they are able to maintain their comparative advantage. A key aim of the paper is to make Catholic school teachers and leaders aware of some of the discussions on how to respond to the crisis, and provide links to online resources that may be useful. Social studies education [Sosyal Bilgiler] in Turkey has been defined as an integrated field of study after the curriculum reform over the last decade. This interdisciplinary notion of social studies education is established in the curriculum as a result of modeling NCSS (National Council for the Social Studies) standards. This new social studies movement in Turkey has taken a thematic approach and focuses on developing skills and values in the curriculum. Unlike the former curriculums, this new curriculum has adapted alternative assessment methods such as portfolios, self and peer evaluation, projects, poster presentations, and rubrics where in the past Turkish educational system has been dominated by the standardized testing. On the other hand, there have been discussions in the United States regarding the influence of high-stakes testing in diminishing the instructional time of social studies classes and instructional decisions in these classes. The purpose of this paper is to compare and discuss the influence of standardized testing on social studies education both in Turkey and the United States. This discussion may help to redefine and restructure social studies education and will consider the disintegration of the field, as has been one of the major trends in the last two decades.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Near-peer paradigms have been demonstrated effective in supporting how students navigate novel clinical environments. In this study, we describe an innovative model of incorporating teaching assistants (TAs) into a core radiology clerkship and investigate both its perceived educational value by clinical-year learners and its perceived impact on professional growth by TAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At one U.S. medical school, the core clinical year includes a clerkship in radiology incorporating both reading room exposure and a didactic curriculum. Radiology faculty deliver a variety of traditional and interactive, "dynamic" lectures, while medical student TAs deliver additional dynamic sessions, including a final TA-created review session. The educational value of each didactic session by clerkship students was assessed using a five-point scale survey, and the professional value of the experience by TAs was assessed using a five-point Likert survey. RESULTS: Spanning from 2020 to 2023, 268 (74.4%) clinical-year students submitted the post-clerkship survey, with the didactic review sessions created and led by TAs receiving the highest ratings of any didactic session. Of 16 former TAs, 12 (75%) completed the post-service survey, with all respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing that they enjoyed and would recommend their experience, and that it enhanced their interest in radiology and in academic medicine. CONCLUSION: Near-peer education in a core radiology clerkship enhances the experience of the learner through peer guidance and the experience of the teacher through professional development. This paper addresses the curriculum overlap and gap between LIS education and intelligence education by analyzing the content of the websites of the intelligence education programs and courses in 27 representative intelligence education universities in the United States, and the intelligence-related programs and courses in the 56 LIS programs in the United States and Canada. The curriculum overlap lies in computer skills for information collection management, geographic information systems, data mining, knowledge discovery, competitive intelligence and information security, whereas the major curriculum gap lies in most intelligence analysis domain areas (such as military intelligence, political intelligence, science and technology intelligence) and many intelligence tradecraft areas (such as structured analytic techniques, intelligence theory and methods, intelligence policy and organization, intelligence operations, counterintelligence, intelligence writing and briefing). By filling some curriculum gaps based on the overlap, LIS education can extend to open source intelligence analysis in some domain areas.

In this article, the author critiques the MLA Report. His first response to the MLA report is that it clearly identifies a number of the problems facing modern languages departments today. Enrollments and majors are declining in most modern languages departments throughout the U.S. Other academic departments do not strongly enforce language requirements, especially the modern languages requirements for PhD students. Most other departments are not looking to modern languages departments for integrated or interdisciplinary studies. Modern languages departments often have serious divisions among their faculty, especially between the language teachers and the literary scholars. Most senior faculty do not, and for the most part do not want to, teach language courses. Finally, the Report notes that "the standard configuration of foreign language curricula" is in need of major rethinking. Yet, a Report that, in part, blames modern languages department difficulties on a lack of cooperation from other university departments would seem to suggest a limited vision in an increasingly competitive university environment. His second response is that this Report does not provide many useful guidelines for radically different modern language instruction in U.S. universities in the coming years. In brief, it seems to be written for the benefit of the modern languages faculty. It gives little serious thought to contemporary students in U.S. universities and how they could be encouraged to learn and use foreign languages. However, the future of foreign language study at U.S. universities is not likely to rest with what faculty want, but with what students want, or at least what students are willing to value. There seems to be very little awareness in the Report that university curricula need to address relevance to student needs first and foremost.

Cosmopolitan and global discourses are more and more often used for conceptualization and interpretation of citizenship. However, in the United States, the majority of schools are still resistant to incorporating cosmopolitan and global perspectives into citizenship education curriculum. This paper addresses challenges of cosmopolitan and global citizenship education in the United States. Three major challenges, namely (a) terminological and theoretical divergence, (b) lack of awareness among educators, and (c) patriotism-focused curricula are discussed. Also, the perspective areas of comparative education research to advance cosmopolitan and global education agendas are identified.

Concerns about American's youth being productive workers, capable leaders and conscientious consumers in a global community are copious. The Committee for Economical Development (2005) reported that youth in the U.S. know little about the world or international issues and how this affects their future, acquire insufficient international skills and knowledge to maintain America's competitiveness in the global economy, possess minimum levels of proficiency in second languages, and attain diminutive knowledge of world cultures and religions. These skill deficiencies threaten students' ability to function in an increasingly interdependent world. This author suggests that, in order to address these skill deficits for students with physical or health disabilities, global studies should be an integral aspect of the curriculum and should be reflected in goals and objectives for Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). IEP goals and objectives are needed to help students to understand the impact of globalization. Part of the challenge in implementing global education for students with physical or health impairments begins with educators realizing that the U.S. has become very interdependent globally. In order to achieve the goal of developing the skills to become collaborative team members who are creative critical thinkers, students with physical or health impairments should encounter a curriculum that will assist them in becoming, self-determined, responsible, and contributing world citizens. Here, the author asserts that now is a good time for teachers and other advocates to critically examine the curriculum provided to students with physical or health disabilities to determine whether it contains content appropriate for facilitating the growth of 21st century citizens.

This paper addresses the role of history education in developing a shared sense of identity in modern democracies. It does so by presenting findings from research into children's ideas about history in the United States and Northern Ireland, two settings that share important political and social characteristics with Canada and other pluralist countries. In the United States, the history curriculum revolves around developing a unified national identity, and it provides few opportunities for students to examine diversity within or outside the country. In Northern Ireland, schools avoid issues of identity and thus do little to help students move beyond the bonds of their own political/religious communities. A more productive way of incorporating identity into the history curriculum would involve attention to those events in a nation's past that have promoted pluralism and democracy.

Poor student learning appears to be a distinct and pernicious problem in the United States. The continuing debate among educational policy makers and practitioners about how best to improve learning has yielded a multitude of federal, state, and local reform efforts. Yet, as promising as some of these efforts are, there is still a growing sense among many educational stakeholders that they have only marginally enhanced learning in America's classrooms (Steinberg, Brown, and Dornbusch 1996). This paper describes a study of elementary students' perspectives on learning. The study focused on three questions: (1) Is learning important for elementary students? (2) If so, what collective thoughts and feelings do they develop about their learning? and (3) What collective reactions do they develop in response to these learning-related thoughts and feelings? The driving premise of the study was that students themselves, rather than scholars, administrators, teachers, or parents could best relate what was wrong with their learning experience and how best to fix it. The findings argue that effective reform and improvement efforts must take into consideration students' perspectives on schooling and learning. Second, the findings argue against the notion that elementary students learn poorly simply because learning does not matter to them. Finally, the findings call into question research that places blame for poor learning on factors outside of school. While issues such as race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and poverty undoubtedly influence students' ability to learn well, the root causes of poor learning appear to lie within the classroom. Indeed, the results of this study indicate that only a few, alterable, within-classroom variables related to curriculum, instruction, teacher behavior, and cooperative learning hold the key to substantially improving learning in the elementary school.

This article presents information on the U.S. civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. Paper Project's Liberation Curriculum. The Liberation Curriculum has emphasized to change the way young people think about King, the modem African American freedom struggle, and the ongoing struggle for social justice. The Liberation Curriculum also explores King's ideological and political development, which in the popular mind has been frozen on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. The Curriculum emphasizes King's broader concern for human rights, such as his opposition to the Vietnam War and his efforts to bring about economic justice. It also seeks to clarify King's place in history, presenting students with the inspiring message that ordinary people can make extraordinary contributions to the cause of social justice.

Low-cost personal computers, wireless access technologies, the Internet, and computer-equipped classrooms allow the design of novel and complementary methodologies for teaching digital information security in electrical engineering curricula. The challenges of the current digital information era require experts who are effectively able to counteract piracy, forgery, copyright infringement, and so on. Digital watermarking is one possible technique for fighting piracy, which consists of the insertion of invisible but robust information to protect the data. In this paper, a new teaching approach, designed for testing student skills and progressing in multimedia data protection, is presented. This consists of a distributed security game where students compete by first using the developed watermarking techniques and then attacking each other's methods, thus verifying their robustness. Groups of students from different universities and countries play against each other, trying to compromise other teams' hiding systems while protecting their own data from attacks. The proposed methodology can be considered as an appealing approach for stimulating learning, cooperation, and team competition. The effectiveness of the teaching method is verified by a student survey and their academic results. (Contains 4 tables and 2 figures.)

This paper seeks to identify significant trends in mathematics curricula and teaching approaches in two education systems: the United States (a highly decentralised education system) and England (a highly centralised education system), with focus on 16-to-19-year-olds. The paper adopts a two-fold perspective: an historical overview, and comparison of the areas of convergence and divergence across both education systems. The trajectory of mathematical development is expressed through timelines of core concepts and ideas which chronicle the sequence of events and philosophies that have shaped the development of mathematics teaching and learning. By tracing the trajectory of mathematics through history, the paper provides a greater awareness of how different factors influence how mathematics is taught across two disparate educational jurisdictions. The paper affords opportunities to reflect on and draw conclusions about what constitutes meaningful mathematics teaching and curriculum approaches for 21st century learner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In almost all the civil engineering programs in the United States, a student is required to take at least one design course in either steel or reinforced concrete. One of the topics covered in an introductory steel design course is the design of connections. Steel connections play important roles in the integrity of a structure, and many structural failures are attributed to connection failures. In recent years, in order to help students better understand the various connection types, many schools, including Minnesota State, have acquired steel sculptures. A steel sculpture is a physical system that shows forty eight types of connections found in standard construction practices. Unfortunately, because of its size and location (eight feet tall, weighs nearly 2500 pounds and usually erected outdoor), students do not have easy access to it. Moreover, today's students who belong to the Google generation are more comfortable with web-based learning tools. To provide an effective learning opportunity for the Google generation and to provide 24-7 hour access, we have created a web-based interactive version of our steel sculpture. The interactive sculpture shows the close up view of each connection with description, potential failure modes, sample calculations, and field examples. Moreover, to measure the effectiveness of this web-based tool, we conducted student surveys. In this paper, we describe in detail, how the interactive steel sculpture was developed, the results of the surveys, and how this tool could be used to enhance student's learning in a steel design class. In the knowledge-based economy that characterizes the 21st century, most previously industrialized countries are making massive investments in education. The United States ranks poorly on many leading indicators, however, primarily because of the great inequality in educational inputs and outcomes between White students and non-Asian "minority" students, who comprise a growing share of the U.S. public school population. Standards-based reforms have been launched throughout the United States with promises of greater equity, but while students are held to common standards--and increasingly experience serious sanctions if they fail to meet them--most states have not equalized funding and access to the key educational resources needed for learning. The result of this collision of new standards with old inequities is less access to education for many students of color, rather than more. This article outlines current disparities in educational access; illustrates the relationships between race, educational resources, and student achievement; and proposes reforms needed to equalize opportunities to learn. The authors argue for teaching queer-inclusive English language arts (ELA). They report on a study that surveyed high school personnel across the United States, revealing that very few people in charge of ELA curricula value such inclusion. In response to these findings, the authors offer "images of the possible" in which texts and methods that could be used in queer-inclusive ELA curricula are suggested. They advocate for teaching ELA that represents diverse people, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning, in a range of positionalities, as both insiders and outsiders in various texts. Such a curriculum is one way for all high school students to experience themselves amid "otherness," or to experience the "other" in their midst. It is the vehicle for, and the echo of, a varied and varying society--a thesis-antithesis dialectic that eschews synthesis. In order to accomplish this, teachers must educate students to examine and experience the multiple and mutable constituents of identity and culture, of which sexuality is a critical, but hardly constant, constituent.

The article focuses on the U.S. study that addresses how the introduction of an assessment instrument or rubrics can alter college students' success in learning as it looks at writing as an assessment of critical thinking. As a guideline for rating student performance, the study proves that the use of rubrics can improve critical thinking. The study imparts to the holistic appraisal of critical thinking as well as to the use of constructive assessment data for curriculum revision, instruction improvement, and student learning enhancement.

“Developing Enterprise Budgets for Sustainable School Gardens: Service Learning in a Global Context.” Ashley D. Jones, University of Arkansas–Fayetteville, second-place paper. Service learning programs are becoming a part of curricula in universities throughout the United States. The University of Arkansas–Fayetteville (UAF) established a service learning program that targeted the educational, health, social, and agricultural needs of a community. This research aimed to provide students, faculty, community members, and school officials with a template for crop budgets to evaluate the costs and returns of producing multiple crops at a school. Crops produced in a sustainable garden must meet three criteria: (1) exhibit minimal negative environmental impact; (2) provide just-in-time production of crops to meet school needs; and (3) be solvent, either generating net positive revenue from the sale of crop or providing cost savings by growing crops at the school rather than purchasing them elsewhere. This proposal focuses on developing enterprise budgets for four crops: chili peppers, cabbage, corn, and tomatoes using an interactive Excel® budgeting tool. The design of the interactive budgets is to provide a framework that students at the University of Arkansas–Fayetteville can use in their service learning courses when examining the costs and benefits of agriculturally based projects, while also being a functional aid for the recipients of the service learning program. “Effect of Low and High Concentrate Supplementation on Milk Production, Milk Quality, and Overall Profitability in a Pasture-based Organic Dairy.” Stephanie Horton, California State University, Chico, third-place paper. Decreasing levels of concentrate supplementation and increasing consumption of forage offer a way for organic dairy farmers to reduce input costs. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of low and high concentrate supplementation on milk production, milk quality, and overall profitability in a pasture-based organic dairy. Two concentrate levels L and H (12% and 24% of dry matter intake [DMI], respectively) were investigated in a herd of seventy-six Holstein/Jersey cross cows for a forty-one-day treatment period. Milk yield, percentage fat, and somatic cell counts were comparable between groups. Protein percentage differed ( p < 0.05) among group L (3.04 ± 0.04) and H (3.18 ± 0.05). A difference ( p < 0.05) in percent solids nonfat between group L (8.78 ± 0.04) and H (8.93 ± 0.05) was identified. Overall, decreasing the concentrate supplementation levels from 24% to 12% of DMI was shown to have no impact on milk yield and little impact on milk quality in an intensively managed, pastured-based dairy. The income over feed costs (IOFC) were also significantly ( p < 0.01) greater for the low supplementation group, making intensive grazing a viable option for organic dairy farmers with high-quality pastures. This paper is the second in a two-part series reporting results from the 2018 Curriculum Study. The 2018 study is the fifth installment of a decades-long research project that captures descriptive snapshots-in-time of TR curricula. The intent of this curriculum study was to capture an in-depth, descriptive snapshot of TR educational programs in the U.S. and Canada as of 2018. The study results described TR curricula in five areas: (a) accreditation, (b) curriculum/internship, (c) university and unit, (d) faculty, and (e) student characteristics. This paper, Part B, reports on: (a) accreditation and (b) curriculum/ internship characteristics portions of the research. A 64-item online survey was sent to 91 TR program directors with 67 usable surveys returned (73.6% return rate). Half of the responding TR educational programs were accredited by either COAPRT or CARTE. The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC™) standards continued to be the most important driver of curricular changes. Curriculum changes included adding more TR specific courses, more assignments with courses, more TR credit hours, and more internship requirements and assignments, in addition to assessing specific student outcomes. This paper is the first in a two-part series documenting an in-depth, descriptive snapshot of TR educational programs in the US and Canada, as of 2018. This paper, Part A, reports on: (a) university and unit, (b) faculty, and (c) student characteristics portions of the research. A 64-item online survey was sent to 91 TR program directors with 67 usable surveys (73.6% return rate). Respondents reported that the TR programs are located in mid-sized to large schools with university enrollments of 3,000 and above. Results showed that TR programs are housed in a variety of colleges, but most frequently in colleges with Health in their title. TR faculty tend to hold adjunct positions with master's-only degrees. Arts-based training programs can aid in building observational skills, communication, team building, and leadership through targeted analysis of works of art. Furthermore, arts-based training programs are unique in that they highlight non-technical skills (NTS). The goal of this study was to investigate the extent to which NTS were developed through an arts-based training program among entry-level occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) students. This study used a mixed methodological approach to analyze retrospective data. Quantitative analysis of the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS) assessment was conducted. Qualitative analysis was completed through analysis of the participants’ reflection papers. Quantitative results (n = 69) from the KIMS show significance (p = 0.011; 0.013), and qualitative analysis (n = 32) resulted in five central themes: evolution of thinking, holistic approach, diverse perspective, lived reality of context, and development of NTS (collaboration, self-awareness, mindful of others, creativity, and effective communication). Quantitative and qualitative findings suggest arts-based training programs can improve students’ ability to reduce their bias through implementation of a mindfulness lens. Results and recommendations from this study can be used as an example for occupational therapy academic programs to implement an evidence-based teaching methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although massive open online courses (MOOCs) are seen to be, and are in fact designed to be, stand-alone online courses, their introduction to the higher education landscape has expanded the space of possibilities for blended course designs (those that combine online and face-to-face learning experiences). Instead of replacing courses at higher education institutions, could MOOCs enhance those courses? This paper reports one such exploration, in which a Stanford University Machine Learning MOOC was integrated into a graduate course in machine learning at Vanderbilt University during the Fall 2012 semester. The blended course design, which leveraged a MOOC course and platform for lecturing, grading, and discussion, enabled the Vanderbilt instructor to lead an overload course in a topic much desired by students. The study shows that while students regarded some elements of the course positively, they had concerns about the coupling of online and in-class components of this particular blended course design. Analysis of student and instructor reflections on the course suggests dimensions for characterizing blended course designs that incorporate MOOCs, either in whole or in part. Given the reported challenges in this case study of integrating a MOOC in its entirety in an on-campus course, the paper advocates for more complex forms of blended learning in which course materials are drawn from multiple MOOCs, as well as from other online sources. Flipped classroom models encourage student autonomy and reverse the order of traditional classroom content such as lectures and assignments. Virtual learning environments are ideal for executing flipped classroom models to improve critical thinking skills. This paper provides health professions faculty with guidance on developing a virtual flipped classroom in online graduate nutrition courses between September 2021 and January 2022 at the School of Health Professions, Rutgers The State University of New Jersey. Examples of pre-class, live virtual face-to-face, and post-class activities are provided. Active learning, immediate feedback, and enhanced student engagement in a flipped classroom may result in a more thorough synthesis of information, resulting in increased critical thinking skills. This article describes how a flipped classroom model design in graduate online courses that incorporate virtual face-to-face class sessions in a virtual learning environment can be utilized to promote critical thinking skills. Health professions faculty who teach online can apply the examples discussed to their online courses.

This article discusses the capstone course at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Sociology 489, Senior Seminar, is a required core course that is offered during the fall semester. This course endeavors to crystallize students' knowledge and appreciation of the discipline. Another goal is to provide closure to students' undergraduate sociology experience and to assess their understanding of the discipline. Thirteen readings are discussed by the seminar participants. These readings consist of articles and chapters that are related to methodological, theoretical, and selective substantive issues of interest in the discipline. Several of the readings deal explicitly with the sociology. In addition to the required readings, students are encouraged to elect one or two optional sources. These and other sources are integrated into the seminar when and where appropriate. Students are required to submit a 15-to 20-page paper at the end of the course. Students work closely with the seminar instructor and meet frequently to discuss the progress of their paper. This activity helps to nurture a collaborative relationship between students and professor. The final grade for the capstone course is based on the student's seminar participation and paper.

This article describes the capstone course in the sociology major at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The capstone course in the sociology major at Cornell College is a senior seminar called Social Problems and Policy. In this course the students' principal task is to write a research paper on a social problem or component of a social problem and on the social policy that exists to address this problem. The capstone course is required only of sociology majors. Students take this capstone course during the first part of their senior year, after they have completed most of the other required courses in the major, including the methods and theory courses. The school added Social Problems and Policy to the major in 1990. The particular course developed by the college reflects their departmental emphasis on the application of the sociological perspective to social problems and policy. Nearly all of the subject area courses in the department reflect this emphasis to some degree. The capstone course also provides sociology majors with an opportunity to write a major research paper using library and other resources. Since 1978 Cornell has operated on the one-course-at-a-time calendar, in which students take and professors teach a single course in consecutive four-week terms.

Background: Nursing students often prioritize learning clinical skills rather than research skills, possibly inhibiting their growth as scholars. Supporting nursing students' learning of information literacy skills has been shown to impact nurses' involvement with research after graduation. This suggests a need for developing innovative information literacy teaching strategies that can enable nursing students to better understand the process of research and how to apply research to practice. Case Presentation: This article describes the implementation of the embedded librarian project at the course level at the University of Memphis. A librarian was integrated into the Advanced Nursing Research course, a semester-long course for graduate nursing students, for the fall 2020 semester. This case shares the embedded librarian project's implementation and evaluation strategies. Conclusions: The embedded librarian project aided students' acquisition of information literacy skills at the University of Memphis. Students reported that the embedded librarian project helped them complete assignments for their research course. The article focuses on the resistance to learning by students in active-learning courses in the U.S. The ambiguity and complexity inherent in authentic problem-based courses have been a struggle for first-year students even as problem-based learning (PBL) continues to be popular and effective. Author Carol Dweck has suggested that innate and unchangeable capacities are possessed by people with a fixed mind-set while situations and experiences that can stretch one's capacities are embraced by those with a growth mind-set.

Health and biomedical informatics graduate-level degree programs have proliferated across the United States in the last 10 years. To help inform programs on practices in teaching and learning, a survey of master's programs in health and biomedical informatics in the United States was conducted to determine the national landscape of culminating experiences including capstone projects, research theses, internships, and practicums. Almost all respondents reported that their programs required a culminating experience (97%). A paper (not a formal thesis), an oral presentation, a formal course, and an internship were required by ≥50% programs. The most commonly reported purposes for the culminating experience were to help students extend and apply the learning and as a bridge to the workplace. The biggest challenges were students' maturity, difficulty in synthesizing information into a coherent paper, and ability to generate research ideas. This paper investigates how a semester-long online course in a language and literacy teacher education department coupled a podcast project with archival pedagogy and restorying to explore how ELA (English Language Arts) teachers (preservice, inservice teachers, and those seeking re-entry) worked collaboratively to enrich understandings of instruction embedded in a high-tech environment. The course was taught in the southeastern United States at the height of a global pandemic. After the semester ended, three graduate students (from a class of 21) joined the instructor to qualitatively analyze data collected during the previous 14 weeks. Data sources included digitally stored videos, archived library objects, class emails, rubrics, asynchronous discussion boards, synchronous Zoom discussions, and student-generated podcast projects. Findings point to the merit of providing agentic-learning opportunities through podcasting practices that mediated students' archival work, ELA teacher education curricula, and digital identity formation. The interrelated epidemics of opioid use disorder (OUD) and HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection have been identified as one of the most pressing syndemics facing the United States today. Research studies and interventions have begun to address the structural factors that promote the inter-relations between these conditions and a number of training programs to improve structural awareness have targeted physician trainees (e.g., residents and medical students). However, a significant limitation in these programs is the failure to include practicing primary care providers (PCPs). Over the past 5 years, there have been increasing calls for PCPs to develop structural competency as a way to provide a more integrated and patient-centered approach to prevention and care in the syndemic. This paper applies Metzel and Hansen's (1) framework for improved structural competency to describe an educational curriculum that can be delivered to practicing PCPs. Skill 1 involves reviewing the historical precedents (particularly stigma) that created the siloed systems of care for OUD, HIV, and HCV and examines how recent biomedical advances allow for greater care integration. To help clinicians develop a more multidisciplinary understanding of structure (Skill 2), trainees will discuss ways to assess structural vulnerability. Next, providers will review case studies to better understand how structural foundations are usually seen as cultural representations (Skill 3). Developing structural interventions (Skill 4) involves identifying ways to create a more integrated system of care that can overcome clinical inertia. Finally, the training will emphasize cultural humility (Skill 5) through empathetic and non-judgmental patient interactions. Demonstrating understanding of the structural barriers that patients face is expected to enhance patient trust and increase retention in care. The immediate objective is to pilot test the feasibility of the curriculum in a small sample of primary care sites and develop metrics for future evaluation. Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform breast cancer care. However, most scientists, engineers, and clinicians are not prepared to contribute to the AI revolution in healthcare. In this paper, we describe our experiences teaching a new undergraduate course for American students that aims to prepare the next generation for cross-cultural designthinking, which we believe is crucial for AI to achieve its full potential in breast cancer care., Materials and Methods: The key course activities are planning, conducting, and interpreting interviews of healthcare professionals from both Portugal and the United States. Since the course is offered as a short-term faculty-led study abroad program in Portugal, students are able to explore the impact of culture on healthcare delivery and the design of healthcare technologies., Results: The learning assessments demonstrated student growth in several areas pertinent for future development of AI for breast cancer care. With respect to understanding breast cancer care, prior to taking this course, most students had underestimated the impact of cancer and its treatment on women's quality of life and most were unaware of the importance of multidisciplinary care teams.
