Are students with ADHD symptoms more successful in school compared to their asymptomatic peers? This paper aimed to explore some key variables of school success among Hungarian students aged 14-19 years. Mindset, school performance, performance motivation, subjective and school well-being of adolescents with and without ADHD symptoms were compared. A total of 106 students participated in the study, 56.6% were female. According to the results, based on self-reported questionnaires 43% had attention difficulties, and 45% had hyperactivity symptoms, however only 2,8% of students were diagnosed with ADHD. The results of the current study show decreased school success of students with attention difficulties and hyperactivity symptoms. Lower school performance (in main subjects as: Hungarian language, Romanian language, mathematics, previous term average), performance motivation and school well-being were revealed among students with ADHD symptoms (both attention difficulties and hyperactivity symptoms). In addition, lower levels of subjective well-being were revealed among students struggling with hyperactivity symptoms. Differences between mindsets were also explored. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a well-known and safe mucolytic agent, also used in patients with paracetamol overdose. In addition to these effects, recent preclinical and clinical studies have shown that NAC exerts beneficial effects on different psychiatric disorders. Many potential mechanisms have been proposed to underlie the therapeutic effects of NAC, including the regulation of several neurotransmitters, oxidative homeostasis, and inflammatory mediators. In this paper, we summarize the current knowledge on the ability of NAC to ameliorate symptoms and neuropathologies related to different psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive-compulsive-related disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia. Although preclinical studies have shown a positive effect of NAC on animal models of psychiatric disorders, the clinical efficacy of NAC is not fully established. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a pervasive condition affecting persons across all age groups, although it is primarily diagnosed in children. This neurological condition affects behavior, learning, and social adjustment and requires specific symptomatic criteria to be fulfilled for diagnosis. ADHD may be treated with a combination of psychological or psychiatric therapeutic interventions, but it often goes unattended. People with ADHD face societal bias challenges that impact how they manage the disorder and how they view themselves. This paper summarizes the present state of understanding of this disorder, with particular attention to early diagnosis and innovative therapeutic intervention. Contemporary understanding of the mind-brain duality allows for innovative therapeutic interventions based on neurological stimulation. This paper introduces the concept of neurostimulation as a therapeutic intervention for ADHD and poses the question of the relationship between patient adherence to self-administered therapy and the aesthetic design features of the neurostimulation device. By fabricating devices that go beyond safety and efficacy to embrace the aesthetic preferences of the patient, it is proposed that there will be improvements in patient adherence to a device intended to address ADHD. Objectives: This paper reviews the literature on intentional discontinuation of psychostimulants in ADHD to summarize what is known about clinical course of controlled discontinuation and guide practitioners who are considering stopping these medications for youth with ADHD. Methods: A systematic search was executed in Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE, Psychinfo, and MEDLINE databases to identify all articles that addressed the topic of deprescribing of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents. Keywords and search strings were developed using "PICO" framework, involving Population of interest (<18 y.o.), Intervention ("discontinuation," "deprescribing," and synonyms), Comparator (continuation of specific medications), and Outcomes. Ten reviewers conducted the initial screen via a single reviewer system. Articles that met a set of three inclusionary criteria were selected for full text review and identification as specific to discontinuation of stimulants in ADHD. Results: The literature review identified 35 articles specifically addressing intentional deprescribing, discontinuation, tapering, or withdrawal of stimulants for children and adolescents with ADHD. In addition to providing broad support for the efficacy of stimulants to treat ADHD and reduce negative outcomes, there is a distinct population of children and adolescents with ADHD who do not relapse or deteriorate when taken off medications for ADHD. The majority of articles addressed either the re-emergence of ADHD symptoms or side effects, both desired and adverse, following discontinuation of stimulants. While confirming the ability of stimulants to treat ADHD in youth, our results support periodic consideration of trials of stopping medications to determine continued need. Conclusions: This systematic review summarizes the literature on deprescribing stimulants for ADHD in children and adolescents. Further research is needed to determine the optimal duration of treatment, identify patients that may benefit from medication discontinuation, and inform evidence-based guidelines for discontinuation when appropriate. Aim: This paper aimed at assessing the influence that probiotic supplement had on mental health and metabolic conditions of children suffering attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Materials and Methods: A number of 34 children with ADHD were selected randomly. Participants were randomly allocated into a group receiving 8 × 109 CFU/g probiotic supplements (n = 17) and a group receiving placebo (n = 17) during an 8-week time period. Clinical symptoms were recorded applying the rating scale of ADHD (ADHD-RS), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) both at onset of the study and after the 8-week interval. Moreover, samples of blood were also taken at the beginning and after the 8-week interval so that the metabolic information could be evaluated. Results: The probiotic supplementation could bring about a considerable decrease in total ADHD-RS (β −3.31; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −5.60, −1.02; P = 0.006) and HAM-A (β −1.91 [0.18]; 95% CI, −3.41, −0.41; P = 0.01) than that of the placebo. In addition, probiotic supplementation brought about a considerable decrease in high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) of serum (β −2.05 mg/L; 95% CI, −3.57, −0.52; P = 0.01) as well as a substantial rise in plasma overall antioxidant volume (TAC) (β 66.26 mmol/L; 95% CI, 36.83, 95.68; P < 0.001) than that of the placebo. No meaningful effects were observed on CDI and other metabolic features after the intake of probiotic supplements. Conclusions: Taking probiotic by children suffering ADHD could affect ADHD-RS, HAM-A, hs-CRP of serum, and TAC levels in plasma, while it did not show any effects on CDI and other metabolic profiles. Background: We recently adapted the published National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis and management guideline to the Saudi Arabian context. It has been postulated that adaptation of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to the local healthcare context rather than de-novo development will improve their adoption and implementation without imposing a significant burden on resources. The objective of this paper is to describe the adaptation process methodology utilized for the generation of the first national guideline for management of people with ADHD in Saudi Arabia. Methods: We used the KSU-Modified-ADAPTE methodology for the guideline adaptation process. We describe the full process in detail including the three phases of set-up, adaptation, and finalization. The process was conducted by a multidisciplinary guideline adaptation group in addition to an external review for the clinical content and methodology. Results: The group adapted ten main categories of recommendations from one source CPG (NICE). The recommendations include: (i) service organisation and training, (ii) recognition, identification and referral, (iii) diagnosis, (iv) support, (v) managing ADHD, (vi) dietary advice, (vii) medication, (viii) maintenance and monitoring, (ix) adherence to treatment, and (x) review of medication and discontinuation. Several implementation tools were compiled and developed to enhance implementability including a clinical algorithm, quality measures, coding system, medication tables, translations, patient information, and online resources. Conclusions: The finalized clinical practice guideline provides healthcare providers with applicable evidence-based guidance for the management of people with ADHD in Saudi Arabia. The project also demonstrated the effectiveness of KSU-Modified-ADAPTE, and emphasized the value of a collaborative clinical and methodological expert group for adaptation of national guidelines. Background: To ascertain whether factors of the family environment and gestational period are associated with the appearance of ADHD in children, as reported by various different informants (mothers and teachers). Methods: This paper presents results from the dataset of a longitudinal study to evaluate behavioral problems among schoolchildren in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro State, in 2005 and 2006. The cross-section considered for this paper comprises records of exposure factors and ADHD. In all, 370 schoolchildren of the public school system were assessed by 3-stage cluster sampling. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Teacher Report Form (TRF) were used to measure outcomes. The exposure factors examined were: profile of child and mother, variables relating to the family environment, and perinatal considerations. The questions were answered by mothers and teachers. A hierarchical logistic regression model was used. Results: Precariously functioning families, lack of social support for mothers, adverse life events and discord during pregnancy were the factors associated with mother-reported ADHD. When ADHD was reported by teachers, the variables selected were: Intelligence quotient (IQ) and sex, with children with low IQ scores and boys more likely to display the disorder. Conclusions: Assessment of ADHD by teachers or mothers reveals specific characteristics that reflect how each of these informants understands the children. Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent, impairing, and highly heritable condition typically diagnosed in middle childhood. However, it is now recognized that symptoms emerge much earlier in development. Research focused on understanding--using multiple units of analysis--the cascade of early-life (i.e., prenatal-infant-toddler) developmental changes that will later emerge as ADHD has the potential to transform early identification, prevention, and intervention. To this end, we introduce the recently established Early ADHD Consortium, an international network of investigators engaged in prospective, longitudinal studies of risk for ADHD beginning early in life, conducted within a developmental framework, and which incorporate multimethod approaches. This network seeks to harmonize measures and methodological approaches to increase the potential for data sharing and subsequent impact. Methods: This perspective paper highlights the importance of investigating prediagnostic markers of ADHD, and potential models and mechanisms of ADHD risk and development, with the long-term objective of facilitating development of preemptive interventions that will minimize the impact of ADHD symptoms on everyday functioning and maximize health and developmental outcomes. Results: We selectively describe key challenges and questions for this field related to theoretical models and developmental mechanisms in ADHD and recommend next steps for the science, including methodological, measurement, and study design considerations. We then describe potential implications for preemptive intervention development. We conclude by considering other issues including ethical concerns and the critical value of incorporating stakeholder input. Conclusions: It is hoped that this perspective puts forth a research agenda that will enhance collaborative efforts and accelerate progress in understanding developmental mechanisms and the early ADHD phenotype, with implications for early intervention enhancement of healthy development for infants, young children, and their families. The absence of a common understanding of attention plagues current research on the topic. Combining the findings from three domains of research on attention, this paper presents a univocal account that fits normal use of the term as well as its many associated phenomena: attention is a process of mental selection that is within the control of the subject. The role of the subject is often excluded from naturalized accounts, but this paper will be an exception to that rule. The paper aims to show how we might reinstate the subject into the act of attention, endorsing the ordinary notion that attention is a direction of the mind by the subject, rather than a mere occurrence or happening. To do so, it lays out the best work of phenomenology, psychology, and neuroscience on specifying the ordinary notion of attention and, in finding them individually wanting, combines them into a unified view that avoids the problems of each. A publication index reflecting N publications relative to prevalence was derived. Results: The publication index was higher for rare than common conditions. However, this was partly explained by the tendency for rare disorders to be more severe. Interpretation: Although research activity is predictable from severity and prevalence, there are exceptions. Low rates of research, and relatively low levels of NIH funding, characterise conditions that are the domain of a single discipline with limited research resources. Children and adolescents with ADHD often struggle with social functioning difficulties. How can these impairments be explained? In the current paper, social functioning difficulties and problems of children and adolescents with ADHD are presented in comparison with typically developing peers. Several domains are considered, such as social skills, social information processing, social cognition, peer functioning. Melatonin manufacturers in the United States have begun producing melatonin products specifically targeted for use in the pediatric population. This paper aims to critically evaluate the evidence available regarding the use of melatonin in children based on where the clinical trials are performed and the regulations regarding the production of melatonin in that country. Melatonin is regulated differently around the world with the least amount of regulation placed on OTC supplements in the United States. The majority of studies evaluating melatonin use in the pediatric population are conducted with children who have comorbidities, such as autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Evidence supporting the use of US formulations of melatonin in the otherwise healthy pediatric population is non-existent. Based on the lack of safety regulations in place in the United States and the lack of evidence regarding US melatonin products, they should be used sparingly in the otherwise healthy pediatric population, if they are used at all. Introduction: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with increased chance of workplace accidents, psychiatric comorbidities, other risky behaviours and sophisticated psychopharmacological treatment. These factors all contribute to a potentially complex risk profile within the commercial diving context. In order to make informed decisions regarding ADHD and commercial diving, further description of this condition among commercial divers is required. This paper reports on a study that aimed to determine the prevalence of adult ADHD among commercial divers. Methods: The study used a self-reporting survey-type questionnaire to determine likely diagnosis, based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. criteria, in a group of 245 commercial divers in South Africa. Results: Fourteen cases (5.7% of the sample) met criteria for ADHD. The majority of the cases presented with combined type, and reflected mild forms of ADHD. Adult ADHD did not appear to occur in significantly different proportions across the biographical variables of age, education or diving qualification. Conclusion: Based on this small survey, adult ADHD may be over-represented in commercial diving in South Africa, compared to general workplace populations. This paper proposes a calibrated concave convex procedure (calibrated CCCP) for high-dimensional graphical model selection. The calibrated CCCP approach for the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty is known to be path-consistent with probability converging to one in linear regression models. We implement the calibrated CCCP method with the SCAD penalty for the graphical model selection. We use a quadratic objective function for undirected Gaussian graphical models and adopt the SCAD penalty for sparse estimation. For the tuning procedure, we propose to use columnwise tuning on the quadratic objective function adjusted for test data. In a simulation study, we compare the performance of the proposed method with two existing graphical model estimators for high-dimensional data in terms of matrix error norms and support recovery rate. We also compare the bias and the variance of the estimated matrices. Then, we apply the method to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data of an attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 5% of the pediatric and adult population worldwide. The diagnosis remains essentially clinical, based on history and exam, with no available biomarkers. In this paper, we describe a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a four-layer architecture combining filtering and pooling, which we train using stacked multi-channel EEG time-frequency decompositions (spectrograms) of electroencephalography data (EEG), particularly of event-related potentials (ERP) from ADHD patients (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 20) collected during the Flanker Task, with 2800 samples for each group. We treat the data as in audio or image classification approaches, where deep networks have proven successful by exploiting invariances and compositional features in the data. The model reaches a classification accuracy of 88% ± 1.12%, outperforming the Recurrent Neural Network and the Shallow Neural Network used for comparison, and with the key advantage, compared with other machine learning approaches, of avoiding the need for manual selection of EEG spectral or channel features. The event-related spectrograms also provide greater accuracy compared to resting state EEG spectrograms. Finally, through the use of feature visualization techniques such as DeepDream , we show that the main features exciting the CNN nodes are a decreased power in the alpha band and an increased power in the delta-theta band around 100 ms for ADHD patients compared to healthy controls, suggestive of attentional and inhibition deficits, which have been previously suggested as pathophyisiological signatures of ADHD. While confirmation with larger clinical samples is necessary, these results suggest that deep networks may provide a useful tool for the analysis of EEG dynamics even from relatively small datasets, highlighting the potential of this methodology to develop biomarkers of practical clinical utility. Introduction: Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is the ability to name, as fast as possible, symbols such as letters, digits and figures. The present study aimed to investigate intragroup performance patterns on RAN tasks in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms alone, children with reading disability (RD) alone and controls with typical development. Methods: A total of 216 Brazilian children between 8 to 11 years old were selected from public schools located in two Brazilian capitals, namely Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte, to participate in the study. Mixed 3 (participant group: ADHD symptoms, RD or control group) x 3 (type of stimulus: letters, numbers or figures) ANOVAs were performed using response time and number of errors as dependent variables. Only intragroup comparisons are described in this paper. Results: The groups with ADHD symptoms and RD showed similar performance results on naming speed. There were no differences between letters and numbers within each group, but we found slower responses in figure naming compared to the other tasks for both groups. Concerning accuracy, children with ADHD symptoms showed a similar number of errors in all three tasks. These patterns were distinct from the performance of the control group. Conclusion: Results suggest a shared deficit in naming speed of alphanumeric stimuli in children with ADHD symptoms and those with RD, and impairments in naming digits correctly in children with ADHD symptoms. Children who have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have a chronic behavioral disease. Children with ADHD have a hard time focusing and controlling their actions. One of the most difficult problems in controlling and treating this condition is early detection. There is yet to be discovered a reliable professional procedure for early detection of this condition. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a useful neuroimaging technique for researching ADHD; one of the key goals is to define the EEG of ADHD youngsters. Numerous methods based on EEG signals have been put out in the literature to address this issue since they are an effective neuroimaging approach for studying ADHD. The best recording formats and channels for diagnosing ADHD, however, have not been the subject of many research. Machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategies for identifying ADHD using EEG-based tools are discussed in this paper. Although, in the case of ADHD, the utilization of ML and AI approaches is restricted. However, the data clearly imply that combining EEG technologies with ML/AI may be utilized to detect ADHD. For categorizing adult ADHD subtypes based on EEG power spectra, ML algorithms that incorporate several classifiers are presented. A widely used deep learning (DL) method is the convolutional neural network (CNN). The use of DL approaches in ADHD research, on the other hand, is currently restricted. Background: Numerous factor analytic studies consistently support a distinction between two symptom domains of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Both dimensions show high internal consistency and moderate to strong correlations with each other. However, it is not clear what drives this strong correlation. The aim of this paper is to address this issue. Method: We applied a sophisticated approach for causal discovery on three independent data sets of scores of the two ADHD dimensions in NeuroIMAGE (total N = 675), ADHD-200 (N = 245), and IMpACT (N = 164), assessed by different raters and instruments, and further used information on gender or a genetic risk haplotype. Results: In all data sets we found strong statistical evidence for the same pattern: the clear dependence between hyperactivity/impulsivity symptom level and an established genetic factor (either gender or risk haplotype) vanishes when one conditions upon inattention symptom level. Under reasonable assumptions, e.g., that phenotypes do not cause genotypes, a causal model that is consistent with this pattern contains a causal path from inattention to hyperactivity/impulsivity. Conclusions: The robust dependency cancellation observed in three different data sets suggests that inattention is a driving factor for hyperactivity/impulsivity. This causal hypothesis can be further validated in intervention studies. Our model suggests that interventions that affect inattention will also have an effect on the level of hyperactivity/impulsivity. On the other hand, interventions that affect hyperactivity/impulsivity would not change the level of inattention. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has a prevalence rate of 7%-9% in the general population of children. However, in children with epilepsy, ADHD has been found to be present in 20%-50% of patients. This paper provides a review of ADHD prevalence in pediatric epilepsy populations and reviews data on specific symptom presentation and attention deficits in patients with epilepsy. Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder which poses challenges for the individuals with the disorder and their families. While stimulant medications are effective, a comprehensive approach, including psychosocial and behavioral interventions, is recommended. There is a growing body of research exploring the potential benefits of mindfulness-based interventions for children with ADHD. Our study aims to assess the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions in reducing ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents through a systematic review of relevant studies. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, our systematic review searched PubMed, Cochrane library, Psycinfo, and Scopus from January 2000 to August 2022. We included studies focusing on mindfulness for pediatric ADHD, comprising various study designs with a minimum 8-week duration. Descriptive statistics summarized results, while risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane RoB and ROBANS tools. The quality of RCTs was further evaluated using the Correlation of Quality Measures tool. Results: In the initial search, 450 records were identified, and after removing duplicates, 339 underwent screening. Forty-one studies underwent full text assessment for eligibility, with 11 studies meeting inclusion criteria, including seven RCTs, two Quasi RCTs, and three cohort studies. These studies, conducted in five countries, involved participants aged 7 to 18 years. Six studies showed improvement in hyperactivity/inattentive symptoms, and five studies showed improvement in impulsivity. Conclusions: This systematic review demonstrates the potential benefits of mindfulness programs on ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents. This study emphasizes the need for high-quality research to explore mindfulness-based interventions for ADHD management in younger populations. Background: Cognitive networks impairments are common in neuropsychiatric disorders like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SZ). While previous research has focused on specific brain regions, the role of the procedural memory as a type of long-term memory to examine cognitive networks impairments in these disorders remains unclear. This study investigates alterations in resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) within the procedural memory network to explore brain function associated with cognitive networks in patients with these disorders. Methods: This study analyzed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data from 40 individuals with ADHD, 49 with BD, 50 with SZ, and 50 healthy controls (HCs). A procedural memory network was defined based on the selection of 34 regions of interest (ROIs) associated with the network in the Harvard-Oxford Cortical Structural Atlas (default atlas). Multivariate region of interest to region of interest connectivity (mRRC) was used to analyze the rs-FC between the defined network regions. Significant differences in rs-FC between patients and HCs were identified (P < 0.001). Results: ADHD patients showed increased Cereb45 l - Cereb3 r rs-FC (p = 0.000067) and decreased Cereb1 l - Cereb6 l rs-FC (p = 0.00092). BD patients exhibited increased rs-FC between multiple regions, including Claustrum r - Caudate r (p = 0.00058), subthalamic nucleus r - Pallidum l (p = 0.00060), substantia nigra l - Cereb2 l (p = 0.00082), Cereb10 r - SMA r (p = 0.00086), and Cereb9 r - SMA l (p = 0.00093) as well as decreased rs-FC in subthalamic nucleus r - Cereb6 l (p = 0.00013) and Cereb9 r - Cereb9 l (p = 0.00033). SZ patients indicated increased Caudate r– putamen l rs-FC (p = 0.00057) and decreased rs-FC in subthalamic nucleus r – Cereb6 l (p = 0.000063), and Cereb1 r – subthalamic nucleus r (p = 0.00063). Conclusions: This study found significant alterations in rs-FC within the procedural memory network in patients with ADHD, BD, and SZ compared to HCs. Background: Thyroid hormones (THs) are essential for brain development. Numerous studies have identified significant links between thyroid dysfunction and cognitive function. However, research on the significance and necessity of thyroid function tests in diagnosis of neurological disorders is limited and subject to controversy. Methods: Our study employed a combination of meta-analysis and case-control design. For the meta-analysis, we conducted a systematic search of online databases for studies that compared thyroid function tests in children with neurological disorders to controls. In our case-control study, we recruited a total of 11836 children, comprising 7035 cases and 4801 healthy controls. Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test was used to determine characteristics of thyroid function between the cases and healthy controls. In order to exclude the false discovery rate (FDR), the Benjamini-Hochberg (BH) procedure is applied. Results: A total of 12 relevant literature sources were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with controls, free thyroxine (FT4) levels were significantly decreased in neurological disorders in meta-analysis (MD = -0.29, 95% CI: -0.50 to -0.09), whereas thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels showed no significant difference (MD = -0.07, 95% CI: -0.36 to 0.21). In our case-control study, levels of free thyroxine (FT4), total triiodothyronine (TT3), total thyroxine (TT4), and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (TG-Ab) were notably reduced among individuals with neurological disorders, compared with healthy controls (P <0.001, P< 0.001, P =0.036, P =0.006). However, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels did not show any statistically significant differences among the cases and controls. Conclusions: Our research demonstrates that, in comparison to controls, children with neurological disorders exhibited a significant decrease in FT4 levels, while TSH levels remained unchanged. This finding provides a reference for potential serum marker of neurological disorders in children. Background and objective: A growing body of research evidence suggests that many patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties with emotion regulation. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), which mainly includes transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), has been considered a potential new direction in the treatment of emotion dysregulation in ADHD patients. The key components of tES are transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). However, there is no systematic evaluation exploring the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation on emotion regulation in ADHD patients. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to summarize the effects of NIBS on emotion regulation in ADHD patients. Methods: This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library electronic databases up to 1 July 2024. We also hand-searched the reference lists of retrieved articles and reviews. Assessing risk of bias using the Cochrane Assessment Tool. Results: Through database search, we obtained a total of 1134 studies, of which 5 met the inclusion criteria. Statistically significant improvements in emotion regulation in children with ADHD were observed in 1 study after treatment with tDCS. In the remaining 4 studies (2 with tDCS and 2 with rTMS), there were no statistically significant changes in emotion regulation in ADHD patients after treatment with either tDCS or rTMS. Conclusions: The data from our preliminary study do not allow us to draw definitive conclusions that non-invasive brain stimulation improves emotion regulation in ADHD patients. This is because there is a paucity of literature on the effects of tES or rTMS on emotion regulation in ADHD patients and a limited number of randomized controlled trials. More high-quality multicenter randomized controlled trials exploring the efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation on emotion regulation in ADHD patients are needed in the future to provide strong evidence for definitive conclusions before it can be considered as a potential treatment option. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition mainly characterized by both a scarce aptitude for social interactions or communication and engagement in repetitive behaviors. These primary symptoms can manifest with variable severity and are often paired with a heterogeneous plethora of secondary complications, among which include anxiety, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), cognitive impairment, sleep disorders, sensory alterations, and gastrointestinal issues. So far, no treatment for the core symptoms of ASD has yielded satisfactory results in a clinical setting. Consequently, medical and psychological support for ASD patients has focused on improving quality of life and treating secondary complications. Despite no single cause being identified for the onset and development of ASD, many genetic mutations and risk factors, such as maternal age, fetal exposure to certain drugs, or infections have been linked to the disorder. In preclinical contexts, these correlations have acted as a valuable basis for the development of various murine models that have successfully mimicked ASD-like symptoms and complications. This review aims to summarize the findings of the extensive literature regarding the pharmacological and nutraceutical interventions that have been tested in the main animal models for ASD, and their effects on core symptoms and the anatomical, physiological, or molecular markers of the disorder. Objective: Tic disorders (TD) often present with associated neuropsychiatric comorbidities. This study aims to examine the clinical manifestations of TD in pediatric patients and explore the spectrum and features of neuropsychiatric comorbidities among Chinese children diagnosed with TD. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric TD cases newly diagnosed at our institution, using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents 5.0 to screen for comorbidities. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of clinical features was undertaken. Results: The study enrolled 182 patients, comprising 140 males and 42 females. The diagnoses were distributed as follows: 65 cases of provisional TD, 29 cases of chronic TD, and 88 cases of Tourette syndrome. 94 (51.65%) patients presented with at least a single neuropsychiatric comorbid, while 40 (21.98%) patients exhibited two or more such comorbidities. TD is most frequently comorbid with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (33.52%, 61/182), oppositional defiant disorder (11.00%, 20/182) and current/previous manic/hypomanic episode (7.69%, 14/182). Children with comorbidities, compared to those without, experienced delayed diagnosis (P = 0.039), were more prone to developing vocal tics (simple vocal tics P = 0.030, complex vocal tics P < 0.001), lacked sibling companionship (P = 0.030), and exhibited more severe tics (P = 0.008). The prevalence of comorbidities was notably higher in children from single-parent households (93.3%) compared to those in two-parent families (P = 0.006). Individuals with multiple comorbidities had delayed diagnosis (P = 0.013), and notably experienced more triggering psychological factors such as pressure, anxiety, and anger. Sex, parents' educational backgrounds and severity of tics significantly related to specific comorbidity occurrence. Conclusion: We identified several factors associated with comorbidities in children with TD, which aiding doctors in recognizing the comorbidities that require attention. Around 5% of the children and teenagers worldwide are affected by Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD], making it a major public health concern. Recently, demand for assessments has substantially increased, putting strain on healthcare and waiting lists. There is concern that pressure to clear service bottlenecks is leading to variable quality and reliability of ADHD assessments in this population. The ADHD Assessment Quality Assurance Standard for Children and Teenagers [CAAQAS] aims to address this by proposing a quality framework for ADHD assessments in this population. CAAQAS is intended to complement formal training, provide support to clinicians, inform commissioners, and empower children, teenagers, and caregivers on what to expect from an assessment and assessment report. Our goal is to promote evidence-based high-quality assessments, improve diagnostic accuracy, and reduce the risks of overdiagnosis, misdiagnosis, and underdiagnosis. Seven key topics were identified by authors which guided the development of this expert consensus statement. It was agreed that a high-quality diagnostic assessment of ADHD in this population commences with advance preparation to facilitate engagement of the child or teenager and caregivers. The consensus agreed that the minimum/essential standards for assessing and diagnosing ADHD adopt a systematic approach from pre-assessment through assessment to post-diagnostic stage, enabling ADHD to be disentangled from differential diagnoses. The process applies multi-source information to inform an assessment of development history and early risk factors, history of physical, mental health and other neurodevelopmental conditions, family, educational, and social histories. Assessment of core ADHD symptoms should include specific developmentally appropriate examples of associated difficulties and impairments. Neuropsychiatric and physical comorbidities should be assessed and identified. Recommendations for report writing are intended to facilitate effective communication between ADHD specialists and other services, and we highlight the importance of linking the diagnosis to an appropriate post-diagnostic discussion. (1) Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common mental health condition in children that can significantly impact their quality of life. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) technology with traditional rehabilitation training through meta-analysis, aiming to provide a basis for the clinical optimization of rehabilitation strategies. (2) Methods: The study was registered in PROSPERO, and a search was conducted using the subject terms "virtual reality" and "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder" across six databases. The search yielded 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that met the inclusion criteria. The data were analyzed using a random-effects model in statistical software. (3) Results: The study found that VR exercise game technology significantly outperformed the control group in terms of both the primary outcome (executive function and cognitive function) and secondary outcomes (attention, memory, and task switching) in children under the age of 18 with ADHD (children under 18 years of age are defined as adolescents and children). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the five outcome measures. Bias tests revealed no publication bias for the primary outcome, but some bias for the secondary outcomes, which did not affect the overall results. The authors of the present study wanted to know whether the previously reported psychiatric comorbidities of internet gaming disorder (IGD) based on DSM-5 criteria were also more prevalent among gaming disorder (GD) or hazardous gaming (HG) based on ICD-11 criteria. Therefore, the present case-control study evaluated the psychiatric comorbidities and associative factors of GD and HG based on ICD-11 criteria. A sample of 60 individuals with GD, 45 with HG, and 120 controls were assessed with an ICD-11 criteria-based diagnostic interview along with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), depressive disorder, and social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants also completed Conners' Continuous Performance Test (CCPT), Dickman's Impulsivity Inventory, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Behavior Inhibition System and Behavior Approach System Scales. GD was associated with ADHD, depressive disorder, and GAD. ADHD was the most associative comorbidity of HG. Depressive disorder was associated with GD relative to HG. Moreover, individuals with lower reappraisal, higher aversion sensitivity, and impulsivity were more likely to be diagnosed with GD. Those with higher fun-seeking were more likely to be diagnosed with HG. In the present study, ADHD was the psychiatric comorbidity most significantly associated with GD, followed by depressive disorder and GAD, as previously reported for IGD. ADHD was also associated with HG. Depressive disorder was more associated with GD compared to HG. Intervention for HG and GD should be tailored by the consideration of the clients' psychiatric comorbidity as well as their reappraisal skills, impulsivity, aversion sensitivity, and fun-seeking. Mobile-based digital interventions for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been developed to alleviate their symptoms. When developing mobile game-based digital interventions for ADHD treatment, it is important to research how the emotional responses of the target audience members—based on flashy visuals or difficulty adjustments to motivate the user—affect their content manipulation ability. This study performed a correlation analysis to examine the impact of perceived difficulty and enjoyment (interest) on the performance of children diagnosed with ADHD while engaging in game-based digital content. Statistically significant differences were observed in the following variables based on the enjoyment level: correct rate (p = 0.0040), decision time (p = 0.0302), difficulty (p < 0.0001), and touch time (p = 0.0249). Considering difficulty level, statistically significant differences were observed for correct rate (p = 0.0011), decision time (p = 0.0158), and difficulty (p < 0.0001). Correlation analysis between the variables correct rate, decision time, difficulty, touch, time limit, and touch time based on enjoyment and difficulty did not reveal significant correlations. Therefore, for children with ADHD, digital interventions should focus on the therapeutic goals rather than on flashy visuals or difficulty adjustments aimed at enhancing interest. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder among children and adolescents. Behavioral detection and analysis play a crucial role in ADHD diagnosis and assessment by objectively quantifying hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms. Existing video-based action recognition algorithms focus on object or interpersonal interactions, they may overlook ADHD-specific behaviors. Current keypoints-based algorithms, although effective in attenuating environmental interference, struggle to accurately model the sudden and irregular movements characteristic of ADHD children. This work proposes a novel keypoints-based system, the Multi-cue Feature Fusion Network (MF-Net), for recognizing actions and behaviors of children with ADHD during the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA). The system aims to assess ADHD symptoms as described in the DSM-V by extracting features from human body and facial keypoints. For human body keypoints, we introduce the Multi-scale Features and Frame-Attention Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network (MSF-AGCN) to extract irregular and impulsive motion features. For facial keypoints, we transform data into images and employ MobileVitv2 for transfer learning to capture facial and head movement features. Ultimately, a feature fusion module is designed to fuse the features from both branches, yielding the final action category prediction. The system, evaluated on 3801 video samples of ADHD children, achieves 90.6% top-1 accuracy and 97.6% top-2 accuracy across six action categories. Background: Amphetamines increase dopamine levels in mid-brain regions which, in turn, impact top-down executive function. Repeated exposure is linked to substance use disorders. Nonetheless, amphetamines are used to manage attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and eating-related disorders. In ADHD, amphetamines upregulate a system characterised by low dopaminergic tone, assisting to improve executive function. A similar process might be at play with eating disorders; however, the effect of amphetamine treatment on executive function in this case has not been thoroughly considered. Methods: Participants (N = 52, Mage = 47.06, SD = 12.29) with a body mass index of 25–60 were randomised to treatment (6-week dexamphetamine titration) or control (placebo) groups. They completed an executive function measure—Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS-SF)—and response inhibition task—Stop-Signal Task (SST)—at Baseline, throughout titration, at Maintenance, and at Follow-up. Mixed effects models examined whether BDEFS-SF score or the SST variable, stop-signal reaction time (SSRT), changed across sessions as a function of treatment. Results: There was no effect of group (p = 0.440), but an effect of session (p = 0.024) on BDEFS-SF, with scores at Time 2 (p = 0.011, 95% CI [0.47, 3.49]) and Maintenance (p = 0.022, 95% CI [−4.89, −0.39]), respectively, higher and lower than other timepoints. There was no group by session interaction (p = 0.659). R2 (conditional) = 0.74; ICC = 0.73. There was an effect of group (p = 0.039) and session (p < 0.001) on SSRT, but no interaction (p = 0.707). Baseline SSRT was significantly longer than the mean of all subsequent timepoints (p < 0.001, 95% CI [16.29, 33.84]). R2 (conditional) = 0.47; ICC = 0.39. Conclusions: There was no discernible impact of amphetamine treatment for obesity on executive function. Our results suggest some variation related to sample size and/or practice effects. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that altered dopamine signaling may be involved in neuropsychiatric disorders and common behavioral traits. Here we critically review evidence collected during the past 40-plus years supporting the role of dopamine dysfunction in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We recapitulate the basic components of dopaminergic signaling in the central nervous system, focusing on core enzymes, transporters and receptors involved in monoaminergic functions, particularly in striatal and cortical regions. We summarize key human brain imaging and genetic studies reporting associations between dopaminergic neurotransmission and behavioral traits, with an emphasis on ADHD. We also consider ADHD in the context of animal models and single gene, metabolic, and neurological disorders with established dysfunction of the dopaminergic system. Examining the evidence in this way leads us to conclude that there is evidence for the involvement of dopamine but limited evidence for a hypo-dopaminergic state per se as a key component of ADHD. We propose a path forward to increase our understanding of dopamine signaling in human behavioral traits and disorders that should particularly focus on its role in clinical subgroups, during brain development and how it interacts with other neurotransmitter systems. Background: Claudin-5 is a vital constituent of tight junctions, which are critical elements of the blood-brain barrier. In people with neuropsychiatric disorders, peripheral inflammation is often found, although it is less common in healthy populations. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between Claudin-5, peripheral immune cells, and the severity of symptoms in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: The study included a cohort of 33 children diagnosed with ADHD and 29 control subjects, all aged between 5 and 12 years. The intensity of ADHD symptoms was evaluated using Conner's questionnaire, which the parents completed. Each kid had serum level measurements of Claudin-5 and a complete blood count in order to establish a correlation with symptoms of ADHD. Results: Serum Claudin-5 levels are lower in the ADHD group compared to the control group; median (IQR) = 30.94 (4-137) and 44.12 (4–223.3) respectively (p = 0.69). The levels of neutrophils and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio are significantly higher in ADHD than in controls (p = 0.011 and 0.015, respectively). Lymphocytes have a significant positive correlation with ADHD symptoms severity, namely, total Conner's scale and inattention (p = 0.021 and 0.004 respectively), while NLR has a significant negative correlation with total Conner's score and impulsivity (p = 0.046, p = 0.038), also a negative correlation yet not significant between serum Claudin-5 level and total Conner's score, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. Neutrophils were found to have a significant positive linear regression with Claudin-5 (p = 0.023). Conclusion: These results revealed that BBB integrity is affected in ADHD children, as claudin-5 levels were found to be lower in children with ADHD, lymphocytes were found to be associated with increased ADHD symptoms severity, and NLR was associated with decreased symptoms severity, which may be via the positive effects of increased neutrophils on Claudin-5 levels. Introduction: Impulsivity is one of the overlapping symptoms common to borderline personality disorder (BPD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but the neurobiological basis of these disorders remains uncertain. This systematic review aims to identify abnormalities in the gray and white matter associated with impulsivity in BPD and ADHD. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, and SCOPUS databases, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Studies that investigated gray and white matter alterations in BPD or ADHD populations and their relationship with impulsivity were included. We reviewed information from 23 studies involving 992 participants, which included findings from structural MRI and DTI. Results: The review identified various nonhomogeneous changes associated with impulsivity in BPD and ADHD. BPD was mainly associated with abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and limbic areas, which correlated negatively with impulsivity. In contrast, impulsivity associated with ADHD was associated with structural changes in the caudate nucleus and frontal–striatal pathways. Despite the overlapping symptoms of impulsivity, the neurobiological mechanisms appeared to differ between the two disorders. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the distinct neurostructural correlates of impulsivity in BPD and ADHD. While both disorders show impulsivity as one of their main symptoms, the fundamental brain structures associated with this trait are different. BPD is primarily associated with abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex and limbic system, whereas the alterations seen in ADHD tend to focus on the caudate nucleus and frontostriatal pathways. Background: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are low-intensity subclinical phenomena, often transient in nature. The etiology of PLEs primarily involves neurodevelopmental changes, trauma exposure, and maladaptive coping styles. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is considered to be one of the factors that increase the risk of future psychosis. Furthermore, ADHD symptoms predict a heightened incidence of traumatic experiences, ruminative thoughts, and negative affect (NA). This present study examines whether rumination and NA mediate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and PLEs and whether trauma experiences moderate these pathways. Methods: A total of 188 participants (72% female) aged 18–35 completed questionnaires assessing ADHD symptoms and traumatic experiences and took part in a seven-day experience sampling method (ESM) procedure, completing ratings of PLEs experiences, the intensity of ruminations, and NA. Results: Correlation analysis showed significant relationships between all tested variables. Serial mediation analysis revealed a significant indirect effect of rumination and NA in the link between ADHD symptoms and PLEs. There was no significant impact of trauma experience in this relationship. Conclusions: Our study underscores the important role of rumination and NA in the co-development of ADHD symptoms and PLEs. Future research should consider investigating the intra-individual dynamics of ADHD and trauma using ecologically valid research methods in the context of PLEs to better understand these complex relationships. Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. Public knowledge of ADHD plays a crucial role in shaping attitudes, reducing stigma, and fostering a supportive environment for individuals with this disease. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and stigma of the general Lebanese population regarding ADHD and identify potential factors associated with these variables. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted between July and August 2023 among adults from all Lebanese regions. The questionnaire was self-administered, available in Arabic and English, and included a sociodemographic section and the validated tools Knowledge of Attention Deficit Disorders Scale (KADDS) and the ADHD Stigma Questionnaire (ASQ). Results: A total of 647 participants were included. Most participants (n = 483 (74.7%)) lacked prior experience with individuals who have ADHD, and only 12.8% reported having good information about the condition. The participants had a mean knowledge score of 20.49 ±3.23 and a mean ADHD stigma score of 75.71 ±20.58. A significantly higher knowledge score was associated with a university level of education (B = 0.14, p < 0.001), older age (B = 0.14, p = 0.001), using the internet (B = 0.13, p = 0.001) and lecture (B = 0.09, p = 0.015) as a source of ADHD information, having a high monthly income (B = 0.13, p = 0.001), being female (B = 0.08, p = 0.030) and having a health coverage (B = 0.08, p = 0.025). Conversely, a lower knowledge was significantly associated with obtaining ADHD information from television (B = -0.13, p = 0.001) and family (B = -0.08, p = 0.043). A significantly lower score was associated with ever being diagnosed with ADHD (B = -0.18, p < 0.001), having an intermediate monthly income (B = -0.10, p = 0.005), and consuming alcohol (B = -0.11, p = 0.004), while a higher score was significantly associated with a higher KADDS total score (B = 0.12, p = 0.002) and being employed (B = 0.07, p = 0.044). Conclusion: The present study addressed a gap in the existing literature by examining ADHD knowledge and stigma in the Lebanese population. Surprisingly, a positive correlation between higher ADHD knowledge and increased stigma challenges common assumptions, suggesting a complex relationship between knowledge, misconceptions, and societal attitudes. Background: To date, there are no official diagnostic criteria for the frequently reported phenomenon of exercise addiction. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate how mental disorders, specifically depression and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are related to exercise addiction (EA). Methods: A total of 173 participants aged between 18 and 70 years, who reported exercising more than 10 h a week and continued to exercise despite injury or illness, answered questionnaires including the Exercise Dependence Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Homburger ADHD scale for adults. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed adjusting for relevant confounders (age, gender) and stepwise regression was used to identify which of the two mental disorders is the more influential predictor of EA. Results: Pearson correlation analysis showed that depressive symptoms [r (171) = 0.422, p < 0.00] and ADHD symptoms [r (171) = 0.308, p < 0.001] were positively correlated with EA symptoms. The relation between depressive symptoms and EA remained after adjusting for confounders in the regression model (B = 20.531; t(170) = 5.950; 95% CI [13.719, 27.343]; p < 0.001). Similarly, the positive link between ADHD symptoms and EA persisted after controlling for confounders (B = 15.507; t(170) = 3.771; 95% CI [7.389, 23.625]; p < 0.001). Additionally, a stepwise regression model identified that depressive symptoms are a stronger predictor for EA than ADHD symptoms. Conclusion: Depressive symptoms seem to be a stronger predictor for EA compared to ADHD symptoms in frequent exercisers. Although individuals with ADHD May exercise extensively, they might be less at risk for EA than individuals with depression. These results contribute to the complex characterization of the psychiatric profile of individuals with exercise addiction, and underline the need for further research elucidating the interplay between mental disorders and EA. Introduction: Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) participated in a randomized clinical trial comparing animal-assisted intervention (AAI) to psychosocial treatment as usual (TAU). This brief report describes effects of AAI on acute HPA axis reactivity and regulation. Saliva was collected before, during, and after psychosocial intervention sessions with and without therapy dogs and later assayed for cortisol (ug/dL). Methodology: Thirty-nine participants (n = 39) with ADHD, aged 7-9 years (79% male) provided saliva at 3 points during 90-minute sessions; (i) upon arrival, (ii) +20 minutes, and (iii) 15 minutes prior to departure, on 3 occasions across an 8-week intervention (weeks 1, 4, and 8). Cortisol slopes calculated within each session were compared across the intervention weeks to determine within subject and between group effect sizes. Spearman's correlations between baseline individual neurodevelopmental symptoms and in-session acute cortisol responses were also evaluated. Results: No significant between group differences were observed in cortisol responsiveness at week-1. By week-4, in-session changes in cortisol were evident, with significantly greater decreases in the AAI group (Cohen's d = -.40). This pattern was also observed at week-8, with an even stronger effect-size (d = -0.60). Concurrent symptoms of autism were associated with the in-session acute cortisol response. Specifically, higher parent-reported symptom scores were associated with steeper decreases in cortisol across the session at week 1 (r = -0.42, p <.01) and week-8 (r = -0.34 p =.05). At week-8 this association was stronger in the AAI group (r = -0.53) versus TAU (r = -0.25), with Cohen's q = 0.413). Discussion: AAI may influence acute HPA reactivity and regulation for children with ADHD. Concurrent symptoms of ADHD and autism may be related to individual differences in the nature of the effect. Although pharmacotherapy is a viable treatment option, managing medication can be challenging. Prior research has not explored medication use among patients with DD in Japan. Thus, this study aimed to identify the medication challenges faced by these patients. Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to 200 outpatients to collect data on the number of prescribed medications, the timing of administration, the frequency of missed doses, and the use of medication notebooks. This was a prospective observational study without intervention and a random sampling. Results: The survey revealed that 57.0% of the participants were non-adherent to their medication regimen. Specifically, medication non-adherence rates were 44.7% among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 86.9% for those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and 30.4% for patients with comorbid ASD and ADHD. Despite 48.3% of the participants taking measures to prevent forgetting their medication, 65.3% of them still failed to take their medication as prescribed. The possession rate of medication record books was 96.0%. Conclusion: The study indicates that the frequency of medication non-adherence among patients with DD in Japan mirrors that in other countries. Patients who reported taking preventative measures still experienced high rates of non-adherence, suggesting limited effectiveness of these strategies. It is essential to develop more effective measures to improve adherence, enhance disease awareness, and increase understanding of medication instructions. Background: The use of medication for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) increased globally throughout the early 2000s. This study examine trends in prevalences and incidences of medication use in Norway from 2006 to 2022. Methods: Data from the Norwegian Prescription Database were used to present one-year-prevalence and incidence rates of ADHD medication (ATC-group N06BA and C02AC02) for the overall population (ages 6–64) and within sex and age subgroups of children (ages 6–17) and adults (ages 18–64). Incident use was defined as the dispensing of medication, with no recorded use in the previous two calendar years. Results: The overall prevalence of ADHD medication use in 6- to 64-year-olds increased from 5.2 to 19.4 per 1000 in the period, most pronounced from 2020 and onwards. While males experienced a nearly threefold increase in use (from 7.3 to 20.6 per 1000), the use among females increased almost sixfold during the study period (from 3.0 to 18.1 per 1000). Consequently, the male-to-female prevalence-ratio decreased from 2.4 to 1. Children exhibited a higher prevalence of use compared to adults throughout the period, although the largest relative increase was observed in adults, particularly in female adults. In children the male-to-female ratio decreased from 3.2 to 2.0, primarily due to an increasing use in 13–17-year-old females. Among adults, prevalences were similar across most age groups, with the highest rates observed among those aged 18–24, where female use exceeded male use by the end of the period. The male-to-female prevalence-ratio in adults decreased from 1.6 to 0.9 during the period. Parallel to prevalent use, overall incident use increased from 1.4 to 5.0 per 1000 during the period, with the most pronounced increase occurring from 2020 and onwards. From this point, incident use among females aged 13–17, 18–24, and 25–34, exceeded that of males. The male-to-female incidence-ratio decreased from 1.8 to 0.9. The overall incidence to prevalence ratio remained similar throughout the period, being 0.27 in 2006 and 0.25 in 2022. Conclusion: A sustained increase in the prevalence of ADHD medication use was observed, with the most pronounced rise occurring among females and adults from 2020 and onwards. By 2022, the overall gender disparity in ADHD medication use had diminished, which should be considered in the context of a steep increase in incident use among adolescent and young adult females starting from 2020. Epilepsy and psychiatric illness have been long studied and today are better accepted as co-occurring than as discrete illnesses that are independent even if associated. Common pathophysiology may not be easily explained, but clearly exists given the significant overrepresentation of psychiatric illness among individuals with epilepsy. Conditions like autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are prevalent in pediatric epilepsy much more than expected, even in the context of chronic neurologic disease. The interplay between pediatric epilepsy and neuropsychiatric symptoms represents a complex clinical circumstance that is not well subtended by the chasm-like division of labor between psychiatrists and neurologists. The unfortunate result is that children and families often experience care that is fractured and at worst, counterproductive for their quality of life. The hypothalamic neuropeptide and hormone oxytocin are of fundamental importance for maternal, social, and sexual behavior. Deviations in oxytocin levels have also been associated with anxiety, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), depression, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and schizophrenia. Both oxytocin and dopamine are often considered reward- and feel-good hormones, and dopamine is associated with the above-mentioned behaviors and, and dopamine is also associated with the above-mentioned behaviors and disorders. Although being structurally totally different, oxytocin, a peptide, and dopamine, a monoamine, they have a number of similar effects. They are synthesized both in the brain and in the periphery, and they affect each other's release and receptors. In addition, oxytocin and dopamine are released in response to, for example, social interaction, sex, feeding, and massage. This review discusses interactions between oxytocin and dopamine with a specific focus on behavioral effects and possible roles of oxytocin and dopamine in various mental disorders and functional diversities.
