Abstract

Modern mechatronic systems include a network of microcontroller on which real-time control algorithms and comfort functions are executed. To provide additional resources for stress situations (dealing with emergencies, overload of comfort functions) without deactivation comfort functions, these comfort functions should be reallocated to other nodes of the network. For this purpose a local operating resource manager is combined with an approach to manage heterogenic resources in a network. With a virtual emergency node additional resources for the comfort functions will be provided.

2. Preparation and characterisation of hydroxide stabilised ZnO(0001)–Zn–OH surfaces.

Abstract

Two different approaches under ambient conditions were developed for the preparation of clean, non-reconstructed, single crystalline ZnO(0001)–Zn surfaces. The surface preparation by a wet chemical etching procedure was compared with the same treatment in combination with a subsequent heat treatment in humidified oxygen atmosphere. Depending on the preparation technique, atomically flat terraces with a width of 100 nm to several micrometers were observed using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The obtained surface structures were further characterized by means of angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements. Based on these results it is shown that the obtained surfaces are, in contrast to surfaces prepared under UHV conditions, stabilised by the adsorption of a monolayer of hydroxides. The important role of H2O during the heat treatment is pointed out by comparing the results of the same heat treatment in the absence of water. H2O turned out to play an important role in the reorganization process of the surface at elevated temperatures, thereby yielding extremely large atomically flat terraces. The terminating edges of these terraces were found to include 120° and 60° angles, thus perfectly reflecting the hexagonal surface structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Statistical reasoning can be enhanced at an early stage by facilitating informal statistical reasoning and developing conventional measures based on individual conceptions. This paper aims at identifying young students´ conceptions of the median and their relations to its definition. For this, we present a design research study with grade 3 students (age 9) focusing on the comparison of two groups. The qualitative analysis of complementary interviews shows that young students already develop an initial understanding of the median but struggle to find the conventional reference for the middle. Consequences will be drawn for further design cycles.

Abstract

International audience; The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in 3C-SiC, the analog of the NV center in diamond, has recently emerged as a solid-state qubit with competitive properties and significant technological advantages. Combining first-principles calculations and magnetic resonance spectroscopy we provide thorough insight in its magneto-optical properties. By applying resonantly excited electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we identified the zero-phonon absorption line of the 3 A 2 → 3 E transition at 1289 nm (within the telecom Oband) and measured its phonon sideband, the analysis of which reveals a Huang-Rhys factor of S = 2.85 and a Debye-Waller factor of 5.8 %. The low temperature spin-lattice relaxation time was found to be exceptionally long (T 1 = 17 s at 4 K). All these properties make NV in 3C-SiC a strong competitor for qubit application. In addition, the strong variation of the zero-field splitting in the range of 4K to 380K allows its application for nanoscale thermal sensing.

Abstract

International audience; To succeed with the development of modern software, organizations must have the agility to adapt faster to constantly evolving environments to deliver more reliable and optimized solutions that can be adapted to the needs and environments of their stakeholders including users, customers, business, development, and IT. However, stakeholders do not have sufficient automated support for global decision making, considering the increasing variability of the solution space, the frequent lack of explicit representation of its associated variability and decision points, and the uncertainty of the impact of decisions on stakeholders and the solution space. This leads to an ad-hoc decision making process that is slow, error-prone, and often favors local knowledge over global, organization-wide objectives. The Multi-Plane Models and Data (MP-MODA) framework explicitly represents and manages variability, impacts, and decision points. It enables automation and tool support in aid of a multi-criteria decision making process involving different stakeholders within a feedback-driven software development process where feedback cycles aim to reduce uncertainty. We present the conceptual structure of the framework, discuss its potential benefits, and enumerate key challenges related to tool supported automation and analysis within MP-MODA.

Abstract

In this work we study the convergence of generic stochastic search algorithms toward the Pareto set of continuous multi-objective optimization problems. The focus is on obtaining a finite approximation that should capture the entire solution set in a suitable sense, which will be defined using the concept of $\epsilon$-dominance. Under mild assumptions about the process to generate new candidate solutions, the limit approximation set will be determined entirely by the archiving strategy. We investigate two different archiving strategies which lead to a different limit behavior of the algorithms, yielding bounds on the obtained approximation quality as well as on the cardinality of the resulting Pareto set approximation. Finally, we demonstrate the potential for a possible hybridization of a given stochastic search algorithm with a particular local search strategy -- multi-objective continuation methods -- by showing that the concept of $\epsilon$-dominance can be integrated into this approach in a suitable way.

Abstract

Deprotonation of the terminal phosphido complex (PN)2La(PHMes) (1) results in the C-H-activation of one of the PN ligands, formally retaining the PHMes group. The reaction mechanism and the possible involvement of the transient phosphinidene complex 2 are investigated by theoretical and chemical means including a deuteration experiment employing (PN)2La(PDMes) (1-d). Furthermore, the thermal stability of product [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][(PN)(PNcyclo)La(PHMes)] (3b) is examined, giving the diphosphido complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][(PN)2La(P2Mes2)] (6).

Abstract

Ever since the 1970s, if not before, second-person narration has been used as an alternative storytelling format in auto/biography to expand the narrative possibilities of engaging with one’s own or someone else’s life. The second-person pronoun can support the author’s project of self-exploration while also offering a means for self-distancing. When someone else’s story is addressed to that person, this raises questions concerning the epistemics of the narrated events as well as the teller’s storytelling rights and authority. This article explores the use of you-narration in an auto/biographical text by Anne Harich about her dead husband, Marxist philosopher Wolfgang Harich. The second-person narrative form is shown to serve various functions, ranging from creating an imaginary dialogue with the dead to expressing the author’s personal feelings about and perspectives on the life she lived with her husband. The analysis shows how Anne Harich, in imagining a conversation with her husband, vents her own pent-up frustration and points to her ambivalent attitude towards her marriage. The you-narrative parts fictionalize the otherwise non-fictional account and show that one needs to distinguish between the aspects of address at the level of the communication between narrator and narratee and reference in the story world of the you-narration.

Abstract

International audience; The architecture of Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs), organo-modified with bola-amphiphiles molecules, is matching its interlayer space to the size of narrow-band red-emitting InP/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) to form original high-performance functional organic–inorganic QD-bola-LDH hybrids. The success of size-matching interlayer space (SMIS) approach is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), TEM, STEM-HAADF, and photoluminescence investigations. The QD-Bola-LDH hybrid exhibits a photoluminescence quantum yield three times higher than that of pristine InP/ZnS QDs and provides an easy dispersion into silicone-based resins, what makes the SMIS approach a change of paradigm compared to intercalation chemistry using common host structures. Moreover, this novel hybrid presents low QD–QD energy transfer comparable to that obtained for QDs in suspension. Composite silicone films incorporating InP/ZnS (0.27 wt%) QD-bola-LDH hybrids further show remarkable improved photostability relative to pristine QDs. An LED overlay consisting of a blue LED chip and silicone films loaded with QD-bola-LDH hybrids and YAG:Ce phosphors exhibits a color rendering index close to 94.

Abstract

The paper focuses on a generic optimal control problem (OCP) deriving from the competition between two microbial populations in continuous cultures. The competition for nutrients is reduced to a two-dimensional dynamical nonlinear-system that can be derived from classical quota models. We investigate an OCP that achieves species separation over a fixed time-window, suitable for a large class of empirical growth functions commonly used in quota models. Using Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle (PMP), the optimal control strategy steering the model trajectories is fully characterized. Then, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a turnpike property associated with the optimal control and state-trajectories, as well as their respective co-state trajectories. Indeed, we prove that for a sufficiently large time, the optimal strategy achieving strain separation remains most of the time exponentially close to an optimal steady-state defined from an associated simpler static-OCP. This turnpike feature is based on the hyperbolicity of the linearized Hamiltonian-system around the solution of the static-OCP. The obtained theoretical results are then illustrated on microalgae, described by the Droop model in dimension 5. The optimal strategy is numerically computed in Bocop (open source toolbox for optimal control) with direct optimization methods.

International audience; The theme of this panel may surprise some, as university teachers of mathematics typically hold a PhD in mathematics or some adjacent field, and in many places some “pedagogical training” is also foreseen. However, university teaching presents still more challenges (in many places: more inhomogeneous or different student groups to teach), and opportunities (including new technology, and – we hope – useful resources from research on UME). For all of these reasons, the panel will address the following questions: What is the current, typical preparation of University Mathematics Teachers for their function as teachers? What “in-service” opportunities for teacher development exist? - naturally, answers will depend both on countries and institutions, but sharing experiences could help to provide an updated picture of how the “professional knowledge of UME teachers” is currently built and sustained. Do the current preparation and opportunities for development meet the demands that exist or can be foreseen? Could the preparation and development opportunities be improved, for instance by giving university teachers (more) access to selected parts of current research on UME, and possibly also participate in research and development projects? What initiatives exist, and which could be imagined as beneficial – both to increase the impact and quality of research on UME, and of UME itself?

Abstract

International audience; The high-valent molybdenum(VI) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, (NHC)MoO2 (1) and (NHC)MoO(N+Bu) (2) (NHC = 1,3-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-phenolato)-benzimidazol-2-ylidene), are investigated toward their catalytic potential in the deoxygenation of nitroarenes. Using pinacol as the sacrificial and green reductant, both complexes are shown to be very active (pre)catalysts for this transformation allowing a reduction of the catalyst loading down to 0.25 mol %. Mechanistic investigations show mu-oxo bridged molybdenum(V) complexes [(NHC)MoO](2)O (4) and [(NHC)Mo((NBu)-Bu-t)](2)O (5) as well as zwitterionic pinacolate benzimidazolium complex 6, with a doubly protonated NHC ligand, to be potentially active species in the catalytic cycle. Both 4 and 5 can be prepared independently by the deoxygenation of 1 and 2 using triethyl phosphine (PEt3) or triphenyl phosphine (PPh3) and were shown to exhibit an unusual multireferenced ground state with a very small singlet-triplet gap at room temperature. Computational studies show that the spin state plays an unneglectable role in the catalytic process, efficiently lowering the reaction barrier of the deoxygenation step. Mechanistic details, putting special emphasis on the fate of the catalyst will be presented and potential routes how nitroarene reduction is facilitated are evaluated.

Abstract

TC 3: Education; International audience; IFIP’s Technical Committee 3 (TC3) is dedicated to concerns about uses of computing and digital technologies in education. TC3 covers the interests of those who are concerned with policy, practice and research in the fields of digital technologies and computing used for educational purposes, whether for management, teaching or learning, and whether by teachers, learners, parents, policy makers, developers, or the wider adult population involved in lifelong learning. This chapter considers the shifting focus of IFIP TC3’s concerns for computing and education over the past 60 years, the reasons for those shifts, and the challenges that educators have faced in developing appropriate uses of computers in their practices. The chapter explores the roles and influences of TC3 conferences, its academic journal, its working groups, and its current task force. Separate sections provide an overview of important TC3 visions and declarations that have highlighted contemporary and future issues, and the status of an evolving declaration focusing on future sustainability and computing. The chapter concludes with an overview of the impact of TC3, and signposts next steps in its ongoing journey.

WebNLG+ offers two challenges: (i) mapping sets of RDF triples to English or Russian text (generation) and (ii) converting English or Russian text to sets of RDF triples (semantic parsing). Abstract

Part 4: Poster and Demos; International audience; Mobile shopping apps have been using Augmented Reality (AR) in the last years to place their products in the environment of the customer. While this is possible with atomic 3D objects, there is still a lack in the runtime configuration of 3D object compositions based on user needs and environmental constraints. For this, we previously developed an approach for model-based AR-assisted product configuration based on the concept of Dynamic Software Product Lines. In this demonstration paper, we present the corresponding tool support ProConAR in the form of a Product Modeler and a Product Configurator. While the Product Modeler is an Angular web app that splits products (e.g. table) up into atomic parts (e.g. tabletop, table legs, funnier) and saves it within a configuration model, the Product Configurator is an Android client that uses the configuration model to place different product configurations within the environment of the customer. We show technical details of our ready to use tool-chain ProConAR by describing its implementation and usage as well as pointing out future research directions.

Abstract

Part 2: Model-Based and Model-Driven Approaches; International audience; Augmented Reality (AR) has recently found high attention in mobile shopping apps such as in domains like furniture or decoration. Here, the developers of the apps focus on the positioning of atomic 3D objects in the physical environment. With this focus, they neglect the configuration of multi-faceted 3D object composition according to the user needs and environmental constraints. To tackle these challenges, we present a model-based approach to support AR-assisted product configuration based on the concept of Dynamic Software Product Lines. Our approach splits products (e.g. table) into parts (e.g. tabletop, table legs, funnier) with their 3D objects and additional information (e.g. name, price). The possible products, which can be configured out of these parts, are stored in a feature model. At runtime, this feature model can be used to configure 3D object compositions out of the product parts and adapt to user needs and environmental constraints. The benefits of this approach are demonstrated by a case study of configuring modular kitchens with the help of a prototypical mobile-based implementation.

Abstract

This paper describes Asteroid, the PyTorch-based audio source separation toolkit for researchers. Inspired by the most successful neural source separation systems, it provides all neural building blocks required to build such a system. To improve reproducibility, Kaldi-style recipes on common audio source separation datasets are also provided. This paper describes the software architecture of Asteroid and its most important features. By showing experimental results obtained with Asteroid's recipes, we show that our implementations are at least on par with most results reported in reference papers. Abstract

International audience; The ever-growing complexity of systems, the growing number of stakeholders, and the corresponding continuous emergence of new domain-specific modeling abstractions has led to significantly higher cognitive load on modelers. There is an urgent need to provide modelers with better, more Intelligent Modeling Assistants (IMAs). An important factor to consider is the ability to assess and compare, to learn from existing and inform future IMAs, while potentially combining them. Recently, a conceptual Reference Framework for Intelligent Modeling Assistance (RF-IMA) was proposed. RF-IMA defines the main required components and high-level properties of IMAs. In this paper, we present a detailed, level-wise definition for the properties of RF-IMA to enable a better understanding, comparison, and selection of existing and future IMAs. The proposed levels are a first step towards a comprehensive assessment grid for intelligent modeling assistance. International audience; We analyse students' work on a task concerning relations of various concepts of differentiability in to find out about their concept images about continuous but non-differentiable functions other than the prototypical examples of functions with a “cusp” like the absolute value function. We identify different types of continuous, non-differentiable functions and show which types seem to be more accessible for the students than others. We use a study with sixteen students in an Analysis-II-course at a German university.

Abstract

International audience; Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) aims at modelling expert preferences and assisting decision makers in identifying options best accommodating expert criteria. An instance of MCDM model, the Choquet integral is widely used in real-world applications, due to its ability to capture interactions between criteria while retaining interpretability. Aimed at a better scalability and modularity, hierarchical Choquet integrals involve intermediate aggregations of the interacting criteria, at the cost of a more complex elicitation. The paper presents a machine learning-based approach for the automatic identification of hierarchical MCDM models, composed of 2-additive Choquet integral aggregators and of marginal utility functions on the raw features from data reflecting expert preferences. The proposed NEUR-HCI framework relies on a specific neural architecture, enforcing by design the Choquet model constraints and supporting its end-to-end training. The empirical validation of NEUR-HCI on real-world and artificial benchmarks demonstrates the merits of the approach compared to state-of-art baselines.

Abstract

Non-volatile memory (NVM), aka persistent memory, is a new paradigm for memory that preserves its contents even after power loss. The expected ubiquity of NVM has stimulated interest in the design of novel concepts ensuring correctness of concurrent programming abstractions in the face of persistency. So far, this has lead to the design of a number of persistent concurrent data structures, built to satisfy an associated notion of correctness: durable linearizability. In this paper, we transfer the principle of durable concurrent correctness to the area of software transactional memory (STM). Software transactional memory algorithms allow for concurrent access to shared state. Like linearizability for concurrent data structures, opacity is the established notion of correctness for STMs. First, we provide a novel definition of durable opacity extending opacity to handle crashes and recovery in the context of NVM. Second, we develop a durably opaque version of an existing STM algorithm, namely the Transactional Mutex Lock (TML). Third, we design a proof technique for durable opacity based on refinement between TML and an operational characterisation of durable opacity by adapting the TMS2 specification. Finally, we apply this proof technique to show that the durable version of TML is indeed durably opaque. Abstract

Uranium(IV) metallocene complexes (CpiPr4)2U(N3)2 (1-N3), (CpiPr)2U(NCO)2 (1-NCO), and (CpiPr4)2U(OTf)2 (1-OTf) containing the bulky CpiPr4 ligand (CpiPr4 = tetra(isopropyl)cyclopentadienyl) were prepared directly from reactions between (CpiPr4)2UI2 or (CpiPr4)2UI and corresponding pseudohalide salts. The mixed-ligand complex (CpiPr4)2U(N3)(OTf) (1-N3-OTf) was isolated after heating a 1:1 mixture of 1-N3 and 1-OTf. The coordination of 1 equiv B(C6F5)3 to 1-N3 produced the borane-capped azide (CpiPr4)2U(N3)[(μ-η1:η1-N3)B(C6F5)3] (2-N3), while the reaction of 1 equiv B(C6F5)3 with 1-NCO yielded (CpiPr4)2U(NCO)[(μ-η1:η1-OCN)B(C6F5)3] (2-NCO) in which the borane-capped cyanate ligand had rearranged to become O-bound to uranium. The reaction of (CpiPr4)2UI and NaOCN led to the isolation of the uranium(III) cyanate-bridged "molecular square" [(CpiPr4)2U(μ-η1:η1-OCN)]4 (3-OCN). Cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis spectroscopy revealed small differences in the electronic properties between azide and isocyanate complexes, while X-ray crystallography showed nearly identical solid-state structures, with the most notable difference being the geometry of borane coordination to the azide in 2-N3 versus the cyanate in 2-NCO. Reactivity studies comparing 3-OCN to the azide analogue [(CpiPr4)2U(μ-η1:η1-N3)]4 (3-N3) demonstrated significant differences in the chemistry of cyanates and azides with trivalent uranium. A computational analysis of 1-NCO, 1-N3, 2-NCO, and 2-N3 has provided a basis for understanding the energetic preference for specific linkage isomers and the effect of the B(C6F5)3 coordination on the bonding between uranium, azide, and isocyanate ligands.

It enables scanning, editing, storing and publishing of virtual objects that can be reused in different augmented and virtual reality applications. To show the benefits of the approach, an exemplary scenario is illustrated by prototyping an interior design application.

[EN] Modeling is requiring increasingly larger efforts while becoming indispensable given the complexity of the problems we are solving. Modelers face high cognitive load to understand a multitude of complex abstractions and their relationships. There is an urgent need to better support tool builders to ultimately provide modelers with intelligent modeling assistance that learns from previous modeling experiences, automatically derives modeling knowledge, and provides context-aware assistance. However, current intelligent modeling assistants (IMAs) lack adaptability and flexibility for tool builders, and do not facilitate understanding the differences and commonalities of IMAs for modelers. Such a patchwork of limited IMAs is a lost opportunity to provide modelers with better support for the creative and rigorous aspects of software engineering. In this expert voice, we present a conceptual reference framework (RF-IMA) and its properties to identify the foundations for intelligent modeling assistance. For tool builders, RF-IMA aims to help build IMAs more systematically. For modelers, RF-IMA aims to facilitate comprehension, comparison, and integration of IMAs, and ultimately to provide more intelligent support. We envision a momentum in the modeling community that leads to the implementation of RF-IMA and consequently future IMAs. We identify open challenges that need to be addressed to realize the opportunities provided by intelligent modeling assistance.

Abstract

The characterisation of loss in optical waveguides is essential in understanding the performance of these devices and their limitations. Whilst interferometric-based methods generally provide the best results for low-loss waveguides, they are almost exclusively used to provide characterization in cases where the waveguide is spatially single-mode. Here, we introduce a Fabry-P\'erot-based scheme to estimate the losses of a nonlinear (birefringent or quasi-phase matched) waveguide at a wavelength where it is multi-mode. The method involves measuring the generated second harmonic power as the pump wavelength is scanned over the phasematching region. Furthermore, it is shown that this method allows one to infer the losses of different second harmonic spatial modes by scanning the pump field over the separated phase matching spectra. By fitting the measured phasematching spectra from a titanium indiffused lithium niobate waveguide sample to the model presented in this paper, it is shown that one can estimate the second harmonic losses of a single spatial-mode, at wavelengths where the waveguides are spatially multi-mode., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Liquid crystalline materials possess great potential as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their self-assembling property, which may lead to anisotropic films and improved charge transport. Here, we investigate key photophysical properties of the columnar liquid crystalline emitter perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic tetraethyl ester (PTCTE) and implement the material into OLEDs. We find that vacuum-deposited PTCTE films exhibit preferential horizontal orientation of the transition dipole moment. Embedding the emitter into different host materials leads to increased photoluminescence quantum yield but reduces molecular orientation compared to the neat film. OLEDs containing PTCTE doped into an exciplex-forming co-host achieve very high luminance exceeding 10,000 cd m-2 at 5.7 V, which is amongst the best performance of OLEDs based on columnar liquid crystalline emitters reported so far. Abstract

International audience; We present a single-pass source of broadband multimode squeezed light with potential application in quantum information and quantum metrology. The source is based on a type I parametric down-conversion (PDC) process inside a bulk nonlinear crystal in a non-collinear configuration. The generated squeezed light exhibits a spatio-temporal multimode behavior that is probed using a homodyne measurement with a local oscillator shaped both spatially and temporally. Finally we follow a covariance matrix based approach to reveal the distribution of the squeezing among several independent temporal and spatial modes. This unambiguously validates the multimode feature of our source.
