In recent years, international institutions, governments and companies have renewed their environmental discourse with green economy proposal as a way of directing their actions and narratives in order of justified the economic model and accumulation of capital, although deepen poverty and accentuate their impacts on the environment. Thus, the objective of this paper is analyze the contradictions in sustainable development postulates and green economy, and how these postulates have been used by mining companies to legitimize processes of territorial dispossession and environmental devastation in peasant communities in Mexico. We use approaches of political ecology with a methodological that articulates legitimization elements about green economy contrasting with peasant dispossession and environmental devastation by Goldcorp in Guerrero State communities. This process shows a quickly appropriation by mining companies of the narratives of green economy, without affecting productive processes that affect environment and community life. The Canadian corporation Goldcorp's Marlin Mine in San Miguel Ixtahuacan is the first open-pit goldmine in Guatemala. While Goldcorp depicts Marlin as a showcase for development and good business, many Mayan women express extreme distress at the multilayered destruction caused by the corporation. Under the guidance of the indigenous women's movement Tz'ununija', in May-June 2011 and July 2012,1 held in-depth interviews with five Maya-Mam leaders and two workshops in San Miguel with more than 30 women opposing the mine. Analysing their visions and Goldcorp's public development discourse, I argue that the mine is decimating San Miguel's social fabric and environment. Although Goldcorp has created employment, infrastructure and injected money into the local economy, gains are short term in comparison with the long-term impacts of the mining venture on land and community. The article examines cyber attacks against energy and mining companies and emerging preventative measures. Canadian mining company Goldcorp became the victim of a data breach in 2016, while plant personnel at Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp. in Kansas were targeted by a phishing scheme in 2017. Ways of preventing a cyber attack include conducting a comprehensive risk assessment of the system and educating staff on the veracity of emails and the safe use of external hard drives.

Since the early 1990s, the extractive industries have increasingly valued corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the communities where they operate. More recently, these industries have begun to recognize the importance of adapting CSR efforts to unique local contexts rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model. However, firms understand local context to mean culture and treat the physical properties of the host region-topography, geology, hydrology, and climate-as the exclusive purview of mineral geologists and engineers. In this article, we examine the organization of CSR at two industrial-scale gold mines in Guatemala, owned by the same firm, which yielded starkly distinct levels of support among host community residents. We develop the idea of social terrain to convey the way in which the biophysical environment informs local social relations and imbues phenomena with particular social meanings. We argue that firms must account for social terrain in organizing for CSR. The literature struggles to provide guidelines for identifying and understanding stakeholders. Appropriate strength barricades and fill fences are a necessary component of underhand cut and fill mining operations and stoping operations in general. These important structures are subject to a number of stresses and strains as a result of the deposition and curing of the backfill material. Parametric monitoring of fill fences gives the engineer the required data to predict not only the behaviour of the paste backfill as it is being deposited, but also the ability to predict the deformation and eventual failure of the barricade. A study was undertaken to determine the performance of the paste barricades at Goldcorp Inc.'s Red Lake Mine using real time instrumentation to monitor the stresses, strains and deformation of paste and paste barricades during placement. The barricades at the mine are a standardised barricade comprised of 10 cm of shotcrete applied to a rebar skeleton spaced nominally 60 cm apart. In total, eight fill barricades were instrumented to determine the behaviour of the paste during the loading. Complementing the eight barricade tests, an instrumented destructive test was carried out to determine the ultimate capacity of the composite barricade. It was determined that the paste backfill behaves as a Rankine-like soil in the initial stages of placement with an average coefficient of lateral earth pressure, Ka, of 0.56. The destructive test determined that the yielding stress of a paste barricade is approximately 100 kPa. The results of the investigation have resulted in operational changes in the placement of paste at the mine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors suggest that the role of the community-subject in protests in Guatemala indicates a growing dissatisfaction among rural peoples. They focus on the grounding in daily life of such protests and the ability of the community-subject to organize and protect their rights. They mention the successful struggle of the indigenous Sipakapense against the plans for open-pit mining by the transnational mining company GoldCorp Mining Co. The Sipakapense founded a political party that won elections in their municipality. The subsequent role of the municipal government in neutralizing the efforts of GoldCorp Mining is discussed.

Crowdsourcing is an online, distributed problem-solving and production model that has emerged in recent years. Notable examples of the model include Threadless, iStockphoto, Info-Centive, the Goldcorp Challenge, and user-generated advertising contests. This article provides an introduction to crowdsourcing, both its theoretical grounding and exemplar cases, taking care to distinguish crowdsourcing from open source production. This article also explores the possibilities for the model, its potential to exploit a crowd of innovators, and its potential for use beyond for-profit sectors.
