Abstract
- The authors suggest that the role of the community-subject in protests in Guatemala indicates a growing dissatisfaction among rural peoples. They focus on the grounding in daily life of such protests and the ability of the community-subject to organize and protect their rights. They mention the successful struggle of the indigenous Sipakapense against the plans for open-pit mining by the transnational mining company GoldCorp Mining Co. The Sipakapense founded a political party that won elections in their municipality. The subsequent role of the municipal government in neutralizing the efforts of GoldCorp Mining is discussed.
