Reducing mechanical losses and suppressing self‐heating are critical characteristics for high‐power piezoelectric applications. For environmentally friendly Pb‐free piezoelectric ceramics, traditional acceptor doping or annealing treatments have successfully improved the mechanical quality factor (Qm) based on a ceramic matrix with a poor piezoelectric coefficient (d33<100 pC/N). Nevertheless, a ceramic with high Qm and d33 values has not been reported owing to the inverse relationship between Qm and d33. Herein, a novel hardening method called grain boundary diffusion is used to develop Pb‐free potassium sodium niobate ceramics, where Qm increased by more than two‐fold (from 51 to 132) and a high d33 value (d33 = 360 pC/N) is maintained. Significantly, d33 retained 98% of its initial value after 180 days, exhibiting improved aging stability. The established properties are associated with the formation of the core‐shell microstructure and the full gradient composition distribution using structural characterizations and phase‐field simulations, where the core maintains a high d33 and the shell provides a hardening effect. The novel hardening effect in piezoelectric materials, known as grain boundary diffusion hardening, highlights the enhancement of the mechanical quality factor with high piezoelectricity, providing a new paradigm for the design of functional materials. Compared with the state-of-the-art Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramics, relaxor-PbTiO3 (PT) based ferroelectric single crystals possess much higher piezoelectricity, thus receiving considerable attention from the ferroelectric community. Recently, it was found that the alternating current electric field poling (AC-poling) could further improve the piezoelectricity of [001]-poled rhombohedral (R) relaxor-PT single crystals. In this work, we investigated the domain structures and electromechanical properties of alternating current electric field poled (AC-poled) relaxor ferroelectric Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3–Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PIN–PMN–PT) crystals with different orientations and phase structures, including [001]-oriented R PIN–PMN–PT (23/47/30), [011]-oriented R PIN–PMN–PT (23/47/30), and [001]-oriented monoclinic (MC) PIN–PMN–PT (22/44/34) single crystals. We found that the piezoelectric coefficient (d33), free dielectric permittivity (ɛ33T/ɛ0), and clamped dielectric permittivity (ɛ33S/ɛ0) for AC-poled [001]-oriented R PIN–PMN–PT (23/47/30) crystals were improved by 24.4%, 22.6%, and 8.5%, respectively, when compared with the direct current electric field poled (DC-poled) counterparts. This phenomenon is attributed to the increase of domain size according to the observations from polarized light microscopy. Nevertheless, for [011]-poled R PIN–PMN–PT and [001]-poled MC PIN–PMN–PT crystals, the dielectric permittivities and piezoelectric coefficients were decreased a bit by AC-poling, being attributed to the depolarization phenomenon caused by the AC electric field. High dielectric and piezoelectric properties of solid-solution ferroelectrics around a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) have attracted considerable attention in the last 60 years. Previous studies on MPB generally focused on a phase boundary between two ferroelectric phases, attributing enhanced dielectric/piezoelectric response to both intrinsic and extrinsic contribution. However, contribution from interfacial effects among the regions with different ferroelectric phases has not been fully considered. Therefore, it is valuable to study dielectric/piezoelectric responses in a ferroelectric-paraelectric system, where interfaces among different polar states may have a strong influence on the averaged free energy profile. In this paper, the piezoelectric response of a ferroelectric-paraelectric nanocomposite, i.e., the xSrTiO3-(1−x)BaTiO3 system, is systematically studied. By phase-field simulations, domain evolution of the xST-(1−x)BT composite poled along the [001] and [011] axis is presented with respect to the applied electric field. The piezoelectric strain coefficient of the xSrTiO3-(1−x)BaTiO3 composites is found to first increase and then decrease with increasing the parameter x, which is similar to that observed in ferroelectric solid solutions with a MPB. Finally, the temperature-dependent piezoelectric responses of the composites are also simulated, where a compromise between the room-temperature piezoelectricity and the thermal stability is observed. The solid solution of (100 − x)%Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-x%PbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) exhibits ultrahigh piezoelectric and dielectric properties near the morphotropic phase boundary compositions and, thus, has been extensively studied in recent years. Recently, 2.5 mol. % Sm-doped PMN-29PT polycrystalline ceramics were reported to possess the highest piezoelectric coefficients (∼1500 pC/N) among all reported piezoceramics, but the atomic-scale mechanisms for such high piezoelectric properties are not yet clear. In this paper, in situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray total scattering measurements during the application of an electric field, together with in situ total scattering measurement at different temperatures, were conducted for 2.5 mol. % Sm-doped PMN-29.5PT (2.5Sm-PMN-29.5PT). Both the largest field-induced strain and the piezoelectric response were found in the crystallites oriented with their ⟨ 100 ⟩ PC directions parallel to the applied field. The local Pb displacement was analyzed using the reverse Monte Carlo method based on the pair distribution functions at different temperatures, where a temperature-induced directional change of Pb displacement was observed. Based on the experimental observations, a field-induced polarization rotation is suggested to be the dominant mechanism for the ultrahigh piezoelectricity of the 2.5Sm-PMN-29.5PT ceramic, while the ease of polarization rotation is possibly attributed to the temperature-induced metastable local monoclinic symmetries with their polar axes close to ⟨ 111 ⟩ PC . Relaxor-PbTiO3 crystals possess ultrahigh piezoelectricity when compared with state-of-the-art Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramics. Recently, even higher piezoelectricity is observed in alternating current electric-field-poled (AC-poled) crystals. This poling technique may benefit many piezoelectric materials and corresponding applications. The scaling effect is quite important for piezoelectric applications, since the operational frequency of devices is associated with the dimension of piezoelectric elements. Here, we investigated the thickness dependence of dielectric and piezoelectric properties for AC-poled relaxor-PbTiO3 crystals. Compared with the traditional poling method, the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) and dielectric permittivity (ɛT33/ɛ0) were found to be increased by 20%-30% via alternating current electric field poling (AC-poling). A weak scaling effect was observed for the samples with thickness above 200 μm. While, for 100-μm samples, the dielectric permittivity was only enhanced by 6%, and a clear degradation of properties was observed when the cycle of alternating current electric field is beyond three. These features are thought to be associated with the impacts of surface damages for thin samples. Of particular interest is that the coercive field was found to decrease during AC-poling, which should be considered for the design of piezoelectric devices. The low uniformity in properties of relaxor ferroelectric crystals is a long‐standing issue in the ferroelectric community, which limits the available volume of the entire crystal boule. The aim of this study is to develop a relaxor ferroelectric crystal with improved property uniformity and excellent piezoelectricity. To this end, Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3–Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 is doped with Nd2O3 (Nd–PIN–PMN–PT) to improve the crystal performance. Along the crystal boule, the piezoelectric coefficient d33 varies from 2800 to 3500 pC N−1, and the dielectric constant ranges from 8400 to 9800, with variations of 25% and 16%, respectively. Such high property uniformity results in over 75% available volume of the crystal boule, compared to 30–50% for undoped crystals grown by Bridgman method. At the electric field of 1 kV cm−1, the converse piezoelectric response is up to 4780 pm V−1. In addition, its Curie temperature (TC) and coercive field (EC) are above 150 °C and 3 kV cm−1, respectively. Compared with Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 crystal (d33: 1500 pC N−1, TC: 135 °C, EC: 2.3 kV cm−1), the larger piezoelectricity, the higher TC and EC, and improved uniformity make Nd–PIN–PMN–PT crystals promising candidates for advanced piezoelectric applications. Flexoelectricity of semiconductors usually exhibits large flexoelectric coefficients due to their significantly enhanced surface piezoelectricity caused by surface symmetry breaking. In this Letter, we reported a general paradigm to tune the semiconductor flexoelectricity through interface engineering. We selected Nb-SrTiO3 (Nb-STO) single crystals as the targets and tuned their surface piezoelectricity through depositing TiO2-terminated and SrO-terminated ultra-thin BaTiO3 (BTO) films. The results suggested that the deposition of TiO2-terminated and SrO-terminated ultra-thin BaTiO3 films to Nb-STO can induce a downward and upward out-of-plane surface polarization, respectively, thereby significantly increasing/decreasing the apparent flexoelectric coefficients of Nb-STO single crystals. Our work proves the feasibility of interface engineering in the application of flexoelectricity and also provides a possible route to achieve the large apparent flexoelectricity of semiconductor materials. The piezoelectric actuator is a kind of actuation device that acts through the inverse piezoelectric effect. Due to advantages of high precision, low power consumption, compact size, and flexible structure design, they have a wide range of applications in optics, robotics, microelectromechanical systems, and so on. Piezoelectric materials are the core materials for piezoelectric actuators. In this review, recent developments in high-performance piezoelectric materials (HPMs) are introduced, including relaxor ferroelectric crystals, textured ceramics, piezoelectric metamaterials, and so on. The advances of piezoelectric actuators are introduced in this review based on the developments of those piezoelectric materials, where the relationship between the figure of merits of materials and the performance of actuators is also discussed. Traditional piezoelectric adaptive lenses (ALENS) are fabricated by piezoceramics with transparent liquids as the filling media. However, it is challenging to achieve high focal sensitivity and long-time robustness because of the low piezoelectricity of ceramics as well as the evaporation and leakage of the liquids. To overcome the above-mentioned issues, we design a piezoelectric lens based on a radial extension-arching mode by using polydimethylsiloxane films and Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3–Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PIMNT) relaxor ferroelectric single crystals to replace the transparent liquids and Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT) ceramics, respectively. Due to the ultrahigh piezoelectric properties (d33 ∼ 1500 pC N−1 and d31 ∼ 730 pC N−1) of the PIMNT crystals and the optimized radial extension-arching structure, an ultrahigh focal sensitivity (8.5 cm V−1 and a fast response time (∼102μs) is achieved, outperforming conventional ALENS based on piezoceramic actuators (∼103 μs and ∼10−1 cm V−1) and dielectric elastomer actuators (∼105 μs and ∼10−2 cm V−1). The largest output displacement of our designed ALENS is up to 53.6 μm at 4.2 kHz under 80 Vpp, and its focus is in the range of 57.44 cm to ∞. Furthermore, its performance remains unchanged after 4 × 107 vibration cycles, indicating its long-time robustness. Polymer-ceramic piezoelectric composites, combining high piezoelectricity and mechanical flexibility, have attracted increasing interest in both academia and industry. However, their piezoelectric activity is largely limited by intrinsically low crystallinity and weak spontaneous polarization. Here, we propose a Ti3C2Tx MXene anchoring method to manipulate the intermolecular interactions within the all-trans conformation of a polymer matrix. Employing phase-field simulation and molecular dynamics calculations, we show that OH surface terminations on the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets offer hydrogen bonding with the fluoropolymer matrix, leading to dipole alignment and enhanced net spontaneous polarization of the polymer-ceramic composites. We then translated this interfacial bonding strategy into electrospinning to boost the piezoelectric response of samarium doped Pb (Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3/polyvinylidene fluoride composite nanofibers by 160% via Ti3C2Tx nanosheets inclusion. With excellent piezoelectric and mechanical attributes, the as-electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers can be easily integrated into the conventional shoe insoles to form a foot sensor network for all-around gait patterns monitoring, walking habits identification and Metatarsalgi prognosis. This work utilizes the interfacial coupling mechanism of intermolecular anchoring as a strategy to develop high-performance piezoelectric composites for wearable electronics. Relaxor‐PbTiO3 crystals exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties (d33 > 2000 pC N−1 and k33 > 90%) and thus attractes widespread attention in the past two decades. However, the inevitable segregation of components during the crystal growth results in relatively low‐performance consistency of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐PbTiO3 (PMN‐PT) crystals, which seriously affects their practical applications. In this work, Nd3+ as A‐site substitution is introduced to improve the uniformity of electromechanical performance of PMN‐PT crystal. The results show that the crystal exhibits a high piezoelectric coefficient of 3000 pC N−1 in rhombohedral phase with a variation of 36%. The electron probe X‐ray microanalyzer indicates that the opposite separation characteristics of Nd3+ and Ti4+ lead to improved uniformity of piezoelectric performance along the crystal boule. The giant piezoelectricity in Nd‐doped PMN‐PT is attributed to the enhanced local structural heterogeneity introduced by doping Nd. Furthermore, the Nd‐doped PMN‐PT crystal shows the rhombohedral‐tetragonal phase transition temperature in the range of 74–87 °C, which indicates that Nd‐doped PMN‐PT crystal can be a promising candidate for the design of advanced piezoelectric transducers. Textured piezoelectric ceramics, such as textured Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐PbTiO3 (PMN‐PT) ceramics, have attracted considerable attention from both academia and industry, as they possess crystal‐like piezoelectric properties, high composition homogeneity, and low manufacturing cost. However, the main difficulty with the textured piezoelectric ceramics is the presence of BaTiO3 (BT) templates, which greatly reduces their piezoelectricity and phase transition temperature. Thus, it is highly recommended to fabricate textured piezoelectric ceramics using as few templates as possible. Here, we successfully fabricated high‐quality <001>‐textured PMN‐28PT ceramics (texturing degree of 99%) by using an extremely small amount of BT templates (1 vol.%) with the help of CuO/B2O3 sintering aids. The textured PMN‐28PT ceramic exhibits 80% piezoelectric coefficient (d33 ∼ 1200 pC/N), 96% electromechanical coefficient (k33 ∼ 88%) and the same temperature stability (Trt ∼ 100, Tc ∼ 150°C) when compared to its single crystal counterpart. In addition, by using an alternating current electric field poling (AC‐poling), the piezoelectric coefficient d33 and dielectric permittivity ε33 of the textured PMN‐28PT ceramics were further enhanced around 5–8%. It is believed that the advantages of high electromechanical properties, low cost, and easy mass production of textured PMN‐28PT ceramic will make it a promising candidate for advanced electromechanical devices. Low driving voltage is important for miniaturization and untethered service of millirobots made of piezoelectric materials. In this research, we designed a bio-inspired bimorph-structured millirobot with a transparent relaxor ferroelectric crystal. Due to the ultrahigh piezoelectricity of the relaxor ferroelectric crystals and the optimized bimorph-based structure, the millirobot shows a maximum moving speed up to 9.22 b s−1 (body length per second) at 100 V, while the minimum driving voltage for initial movement can be as low as 3 V, which is more than two orders of magnitude smaller than that of millirobot based on dielectric elastomers. The maximum and minimum power consumptions of the millirobot are 71.6 mW and 85.9 μW, respectively. The robustness of the millirobot is reflected in its mechanical load stability carrying a 78 g mass (97.5 times of its weight) and its cryogenic tolerance. There is a great demand to develop ferroelectric ceramics with both high piezoelectric coefficient and broad temperature usage range for emerging electromechanical applications. Herein, a series of Sm3+‐doped 0.25Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐(0.75−x)PbZrO3‐xPbTiO3 ceramics were fabricated by solid‐state reaction method. The phase structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated, where the optimum piezoelectric coefficient d33 = 745 pC/N and electromechanical coupling factor k33 = 0.79 were obtained at the morphotropic phase boundary composition x = 0.39, with good Curie temperature TC of 242°C. Of particular importance is that high‐temperature stability of the piezoelectric and field‐induced strain was obtained over the temperature range up to 230°C for the tetragonal compositions of x = 0.40. The underlying mechanism responsible for the high piezoelectricity and temperature stability is the synergistic contribution of the MPB and local structural heterogeneity, providing a good paradigm for the design of high‐performance piezoelectric materials to meet the challenge of piezoelectric applications at elevated temperature. Ferroelectrics are essential components in a wide range of applications, including ultrasonic transducers, sensors, and actuators. In the single crystal form, relaxor-PbTiO3 (PT) piezoelectric materials have been extensively studied due to their ultrahigh piezoelectric and electromechanical properties. In this article, a perspective and future development of relaxor-PT crystals are given. Initially, various techniques for the growth of relaxor-PT crystals are reviewed, with crystals up to 100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length being readily achievable using the Bridgman technique. Second, the characterizations of dielectric and electromechanical properties are surveyed. Boundary conditions, including temperature, electric field, and stress, are discussed in relation to device limitations. Third, the physical origins of the high piezoelectric properties and unique loss characteristics in relaxor-PT crystals are discussed with respect to their crystal structure, phase, engineered domain configuration, macrosymmetry, and domain size. The effect of domain size on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of [111]-oriented tetragonal Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 crystals was investigated. The dielectric permittivity (&eh;33 T/&eh;0) and piezoelectric coefficient (d33) were found to be on the order of 13 800 and 1630 pC/N, respectively, for samples with domain size of ∼500 nm, a 3-fold increase to crystals with domain size of ∼50 μm. Rayleigh analysis revealed that the extrinsic contribution to the piezoelectric response increased from ∼8% to 30% with decreasing domain size, due to the increased domain wall density and associated irreversible domain wall motion. The enhanced properties were thought to relate to the fine domain structures, however, showing a poor electric field and temperature stabilities with domain size of 500 nm. Of particular significance is that samples with domain size being on the order of 5 μm exhibit field and temperature stabilities, with yet high piezoelectric properties, make it potential for transducer applications. Flexoelectricity yields electric polarization through graded strains and exists in various kinds of solid dielectrics but usually with a weak coupling response. In this letter, several Bi-doped Pb(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) ferroelectric ceramics were prepared and the interplay of their piezoelectricity and flexoelectricity was systematically investigated. The largest flexoelectric response (∼300 μC/m) was 30 times larger than that of pure PMN-PT and was observed in the Bi-doped PMN-32PT, where the after poling piezoelectric coefficients were also the largest (990 pC/N) among all the compositions. This suggests that the apparent flexoelectricity in ferroelectrics is highly related to the bulk piezoelectricity. Therefore, introducing a local structural heterogeneity is considered as a feasible approach to achieve an ultrahigh piezoelectric response while also providing an ultrahigh flexoelectricity. High-performance piezoelectrics benefit transducers and sensors in a variety of electromechanical applications. The materials with the highest piezoelectric charge coefficients (d33) are relaxor-PbTiO3 crystals, which were discovered two decades ago. We successfully grew Sm-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (Sm-PMN-PT) single crystals with even higher d33 values ranging from 3400 to 4100 picocoulombs per newton, with variation below 20% over the as-grown crystal boule, exhibiting good property uniformity. We characterized the Sm-PMN-PTon the atomic scale with scanning transmission electron microscopy and made first-principles calculations to determine that the giant piezoelectric properties arise from the enhanced local structural heterogeneity introduced by Sm3+ dopants. Rare-earth doping is thus identified as a general strategy for introducing local structural heterogeneity in order to enhance the piezoelectricity of relaxor ferroelectric crystals. Abstract: Long‐range ordering of dipoles is a key microscopic signature of ferroelectrics. These ordered dipoles form ferroelectric domains, which can be reoriented by electric fields. Relaxor ferroelectrics are a type of ferroelectric where the long‐range ordering of dipoles is disrupted by cation disorder, exhibiting complex polar states with a significant amount of local structural heterogeneity at the nanoscale. They are the materials of choice for numerous devices such as capacitors, nonlinear optical devices, and piezoelectric transducers, owing to their extraordinary dielectric, electro‐optic, and electromechanical properties. However, despite their extensive applications in these devices, the origins of their unique properties are yet to be fully understood, hindering the design and exploration of new relaxor ferroelectric‐based materials. Herein, the complex polar states and applications of relaxor ferroelectrics are first introduced. Attention is then focused on their electromechanical properties, where the relationship between local structural heterogeneity and the extraordinary electromechanical properties is discussed. Based on the understanding of relaxor ferroelectrics, potential strategies to exploit the local structural heterogeneity to design ferroelectrics for drastically enhancing their electromechanical performances are also discussed. It is expected that this article will stimulate future studies on the important roles of local structural heterogeneity in improving the properties of various functional materials. Flexible piezoelectric materials have attracted rapidly growing attention because they offer an efficient route to scavenge energies from the living environment to power personal electronics and nanosystems. Current polymer composites with low-dimensional piezoceramic fillers suffer from poor stress transfer from the polymer matrix to the active ceramic fillers, thus significantly limiting the energy harvesting performance. Herein, an interconnected 3D piezoceramic skeleton has been developed by a biofibril template method using the newly developed rare-earth Samarium-doped Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 (Sm-PMN–PT) for flexible piezoelectric polymer composites. When subjected to external mechanical stimulation, the 3D interconnected structure results in effective stress transfer, and consequently, greatly enhanced energy harvesting output. The 3D piezocomposite shows the open-circuit output voltage and short-circuit current density up to ~ 60 V and ~ 850 nA cm −2 , respectively, with the maximum instantaneous power density of ~ 11.5 µW cm −2 which is ~ 16 times higher than that of the conventional nanoparticle-based composite. The remarkable enhancement in the tress transfer ability and piezoelectric response of the biofibril-templated 3D structure have also been verified by phase-field simulations. A modified Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) polycrystalline ceramic with ultrahigh relative clamped dielectric permittivity ( \varepsilon ^S/\varepsilon 0 = 3500 ) and high piezoelectric properties ( d33= 1200 pC/N, kt = 0.55 ) was used to fabricate high-frequency miniature ultrasound transducers. A 39-MHz high-frequency ultrasound needle transducer with a miniature aperture of 0.4 mm $\times0.4$ mm was designed and successfully characterized. The fabricated needle transducer had an electromechanical coupling factor k_{t} of 0.55, large bandwidth of 80% at −6 dB, and low insertion loss of −13 dB. A wire phantom and porcine eyeball imaging study showed good imaging capability of this needle transducer. The transducer performance was found to be superior to that of other needle transducers with miniature apertures, making this modified PMN-PT ceramic-based needle transducer quite promising for minimally invasive procedures in medical applications. Perovskite ferroelectrics (PFs) have been the dominant piezoelectric materials for various electromechanical applications, such as ultrasonic transducers, sensors, and actuators, to name a few. In this review article, the development of PF crystals is introduced, focusing on the crystal growth and piezoelectric activity. The critical factors responsible for the high piezoelectric activity of PFs (i.e., phase transition, monoclinic phase, domain size, relaxor component, dopants, and piezoelectric anisotropy) are surveyed and discussed. A general picture of the present understanding on the high piezoelectricity of PFs is described. BaTiO3 ( BTO) nanofibers were fabricated by sol-gel combined with electrospinning method. The effects of the concentration of acetic acid and sintering temperatures on the crystal phase and microstructure of the samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy ( TEM). BTO nanofibers with improved surface morphology were obtained as the ethanol to acetic acid ratio (E/A) was 8:3. The fibers calcined at 750°C for 2 h exhibited good morphology and crystallization. TEM studies revealed that the BTO nanofibers were polycrystalline, with diameters being on the order of hundreds nanometer, where the existence of domains offered proof of ferroelectric structure. The ferroelectric domains and piezoresponse of BTO nanofibers were characterized by piezoresponse force microscopy. The calculated d33 was 20 pm/V at maximum strain amplitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1− x) Pb( Hf1− y Ti y) O3- x Pb( Yb0.5 Nb0.5) O3 ( x = 0.10-0.44, y = 0.55-0.80) ceramics were fabricated. The morphotropic phase boundary ( MPB) of the ternary system was determined by X-ray powder diffraction. The optimum dielectric and piezoelectric properties were achieved in 0.8 Pb( Hf0.4 Ti0.6) O3-0.2 Pb( Yb0.5 Nb0.5) O3 ceramics with MPB composition, where the dielectric permittivity εr, piezoelectric coefficient d33, planar electromechanical coupling kp, and Curie temperature Tc were found to be on the order of 1930,480 pC/N, 62%, and 360°C, respectively. The unipolar strain behavior was evaluated as a function of applied electric field up to 50 kV/cm to investigate the strain nonlinearity and domain wall motion under large drive field, where the high field piezoelectric d33* was found to be 620 pm/V for 0.82 Pb( Hf0.4 Ti0.6) O3-0.18 Pb( Yb0.5 Nb0.5) O3. Perovskite SnTiO3 (SNO) was predicted to be ferroelectric with a large spontaneous polarization. However, the perovskite phase SNO was found to be metastable in experiments. Here, we show that SNO perovskite phase can be stabilized by the interfacial geometry in ATiO3/SNO superlattices (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) of short periodicity using first principles calculations. We found that CaTiO3/SNO superlattice has the largest polarization. In all the superlattices investigated, a phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic structure was found with increasing in-plane lattice constants. Accompanying this phase transition, polarization directions rotate from [001] to [110], which is promising for achieving large piezoelectric responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strain behavior and piezoelectric properties of relaxor-PbTiO3 based crystals have been studied under the combination of electric field and static uniaxial transverse compressive stress. The transverse piezoelectric coefficient, d32, for crystals well into the rhombohedral phase was found to increase with increasing stress due to a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) effect, while the values for crystals with MPB composition exhibit a contrary trend that is associated with the phase transformation. In addition, an ac drive field was found to depolarize the crystals under stress. Of particular significance is that manganese-modified crystals show stable piezoelectric properties under ac drive field and stress, which has potential for transducer applications. The development of ferroelectric ceramics with both large piezoelectric responses and broad service temperature range is still a key challenge for practical applications due to the so-called d 33 - T C trade-off. Here we report the strategy to utilize the synergistic contribution of morphotropic phase boundary and enhanced local structural heterogeneity, in which an excellent piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 680 pC/N and a high Curie temperature of 330 ℃ are simultaneously achieved in Sm modified 0.25PIN-0.325PZ-0.425PT ceramics. The underlying mechanism responsible for the high dielectric and piezoelectric properties is studied based on cryogenic dielectric measurement and Rayleigh analysis. Of particular interest is that, a high field-induced strain of 0.19% is achieved in 0.25PIN-0.32PZ-0.43PT at electric field of 20 kV/cm, corresponding to a piezoelectric d 33 * of 945 pm/V, showing an excellent temperature stability with minimal variation of 7% up to 310 °C. This work demonstrates the introduction of high temperature end members and rare earth doping are conducive to ferroelectric solid solutions with desired broad usage temperature range and superior piezoelectric properties, which will greatly benefit high temperature actuator applications. The temperature dependence of the shear piezoelectric responses in relaxor-PbTiO3 based perovskite crystals with rhombohedral, orthorhombic, and tetragonal phases were investigated. Based on thermodynamic analysis, high shear piezoelectric coefficients (d24) and good thermal stability were predicted in orthorhombic crystals, owing to the 'vertical' orthorhombic-rhombohedral phase boundary. By resonance measurements, shear piezoelectric coefficient d24 was found to be on the order of ∼2100 pC/N at room temperature, maintaining same value over the temperature range of -50-100 °C. In contrast, the shear piezoelectric coefficients d15, with values of 3300, 3600, and 2000 pC/N at room temperature for rhombohedral, orthorhombic, and tetragonal crystals, respectively, exhibited strong temperature dependent behavior due to their respective ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions. The piezoelectric properties of Pb(In0.5Nb0.5)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 crystals with various engineered domain configurations were investigated. Rhombohedral and monoclinic/orthorhombic crystals poled along their crystallographic [011] directions were found to possess macroscopic mm2 symmetry, with '2R' and '1O' domain, respectively. Crystals with the '2R' domain configuration were found to exhibit high extensional piezoelectric coefficients d33 (∼1300 pC/N) and d32 (∼-1680 pC/N), while crystals with the '1O' configuration possessed high shear coefficients d15 (∼3500 pC/N) and d24 (∼2070 pC/N), with relatively low extensional piezoelectric coefficients d33 (∼340 pC/N) and d32 (∼-260 pC/N). The coercive fields (EC) of Pb(In0.5Nb0.5)O3- Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) ternary single crystals were found to be 5 kV/cm, double the value of binary Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMNT) crystals, further increased to 6 to 9 kV/cm using Mn modifications. In addition to an increased EC, the acceptor modification resulted in the developed internal bias (Eint), on the order of ~1 kV/cm. The piezoelectric shear properties of unmodified and Mn-modified PIN-PMN-PT crystals with various domain configurations were investigated. The shear piezoelectric coefficients and electromechanical coupling factors for different domain configurations were found to be >2000 pC/N and >0.85, respectively, with slightly reduced properties observed in Mn-modified tetragonal crystals. Fatigue/cycling tests performed on shearmode samples as a function of ac drive field level demonstrated that the allowable ac field levels (the maximum applied ac field before the occurrence of depolarization) were only ~2 kV/cm for unmodified crystals, less than half of their coercive field. Allowable ac drive levels were on the order of 4 to 6 kV/cm for Mn-modified crystals with rhombohedral/orthorhombic phase, further increased to 5 to 8 kV/cm in tetragonal crystals, because of their higher coercive fields. It is of particular interest that the allowable ac drive field level for Mn-modified crystals was found to be ⩾60% of their coercive fields, because of the developed Eint, induced by the acceptor-oxygen vacancy defect dipoles. K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (KNN) powder was synthesized by a novel sol–gel method and used to fabricate an energy harvesting device. The precursor gel and KNN powder were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The elemental composition of the KNN powder was characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). Well crystallized single phase perovskite KNN powder with an average particle size on the order of 450 nm was obtained from the gel after calcining at 750 °C for 2 h. A flexible and implantable energy harvesting device fabricated using the KNN nanopowder exhibited an output power of up to 0.13 μW with a load resistance of 100 MΩ. Abstract: Electric fatigue tests have been conducted on pure and manganese-modified Pb(In0.5Nb0.5)O3–Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PIN–PMN–PT) single crystals along different crystallographic directions. Polarization degradation was observed to suddenly occur above 50–100 bipolar cycles in 〈110〉 oriented samples, while 〈001〉 oriented samples exhibited almost fatigue free characteristics. The fatigue behavior was investigated as a function of orientation, magnitude of the electric field and manganese dopant. It was found that 〈001〉 oriented PIN–PMN–PT crystals were fatigue free, due to its small domain size, being on the order of 1μm. The 〈110〉 direction exhibited a strong electrical fatigue behavior due to mechanical degradation. Micro/macro cracks developed in fatigued 〈110〉 oriented single crystals. Fatigue and cracks were the result of strong anisotropic piezoelectric stress and non-180° domain switching, which completely locked the non-180° domains. Furthermore, manganese-modified PIN–PMN–PT crystals were found to show improved fatigue behavior due to an enhanced coercive field. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Alternating-current poling (AC-Poling) has attracted wide interests in enhancing piezoelectric performance of ferroelectric single crystals. However, the mechanism of phase transformations and domain morphology underlying AC-Poling has not been thoroughly investigated. In this work, we have systematically studied the AC-poling effect on domain structures and piezoelectric properties in the relaxor ferroelectric single crystals of 0.24Pb(In 1/2 Nb 1/2)O 3 –0.44Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3)O 3 –0.32PbTiO 3. It is shown that the piezoelectric constant (d 33) and permittivity (ε 33) are greatly enhanced via [001]-AC-poling compared to DC-poling, related to the presence of modified domain configurations as indicated previously. For [110]-oriented specimens, the piezoelectricity through AC-poling is only half as that for the DC-poled single crystals. We attribute this to the transition from the monoclinic-B phase to an orthorhombic phase under AC-poling, confirmed by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and piezo-response force microscopy. The transition to the orthorhombic phase is likely a consequence of lower Gibbs energy. This study on orientation-dependent characteristics of AC-poling for PIN-PMN-PT single crystals will guide the development of AC-poling technology in applications. New morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) compositions with relatively high T c s were projected in Pb(In 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 –Pb(Sc 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (PIN–PSN–PT) solid solution based on the perovskite tolerance factor, and were experimentally confirmed. The phase structure, dielectric, pyroelectric, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of PIN–PSN–PT ceramics were investigated. The rhombohedral–tetragonal phase transition temperatures T r-t on the order of 189–210 °C, Curie temperatures T c on the order of 274–285 °C and piezoelectric coefficients d 33 in the range of 310–360 pC/N, were achieved in x PIN– (1 − x )PSN–0.37PT ( x = 0.15–0.23) ceramics, demonstrating a promising relaxor–PbTiO 3 system with high phase transition temperatures. In addition, the maps of T c , T r-t , d 33 and ε r with respect to composition were established, based on which, a clear direction for composition screening in future crystal growth of the PIN–PSN–PT system was given. Phase boundary engineering (PBE) has remarkably enhanced the piezoelectric properties of potassium sodium niobate {(K, Na)NbO 3 , KNN} piezoceramics, yet the physical mechanisms need to be further understood. Here we outline a new physical phenomenon to describe piezoelectricity enhancement in KNN-based ceramics with PBE. We propose that the enhancement is due to the multi-phase coexistence featured with strong relaxation behavior. The strong relaxation behavior was unambiguously revealed by cryogenic experiments and originated from the polar nanoregions (PNRs) exhibiting a scale of 2.1 nm and a weak tetragonality (c/a = 1.0040). in situ temperature-dependent experiments uncovered the thermal evolution of the ferroelectric matrix and PNRs in both unpoled and poled samples, the first report in KNN-based ceramics. Our experiments combined with phenomenological theory revealed that ultra-fine nanodomains, PNRs, and easy polarization rotation together promote macro dielectric and piezoelectric properties in the relaxation-featured multi-phase coexistence. This work reveals the physical mechanism from different levels (e.g., local-mesoscopic-macroscopic), thus providing a new systematic understanding of the observed enhancement of piezoelectricity. Flexoelectricity is apparently linearized with the dielectric permittivity and therefore regarded as an inherent dielectric response of solid dielectrics. Herein, we study the role of defect dipole to flexoelectricity by selecting several typical linear dielectrics, wherein the external factors including the surface piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, and semiconducting interface are strictly eliminated. It is found that the defect dipoles could result in several times enhancement for both the flexoelectric coefficient and the flexocoupling coefficient of the linear dielectrics. [Display omitted] Piezoelectric actuators are important elements for compact actuations with high precision; however, driving voltage reduction is demanding for integration and minimization of precision actuations. In this work, we proposed a bending-bending mode piezoelectric actuator based on multilayered Pb(In 1/2 Nb 1/2)O 3 -Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3)O 3 -PbTiO 3 (PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals. Ultrahigh apparent piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of ~10,800 pC/N is achieved in four crystal stacks. The crystal stacks are used to fabricate bending-bending mode piezoelectric actuators to reduce driving voltage. Experimental results show that it can produce a maximum traveling velocity of 3.28 mm/s under the driving voltage of 130 V pp at 1000 Hz and minimum step resolution of 0.35 µm with 25 V pp driving voltage. Conventional piezoelectric actuators require driving voltage of ~300 V pp for similar motion velocity. Alternating current (AC) electric field poling (AC-poling) has been actively studied for tailoring the domain configuration of relaxor ferroelectric crystals to further improve their piezoelectric and electro-optical properties. Understanding the change and redistribution of ferroelectric domains under AC electric field is essential for exploring the mechanism of the enhanced piezoelectricity in AC-electric-field-poled (AC-poled) crystals. Despite extensive investigations over recent years, no consensus has yet been reached on this topic. Here, we performed a three-dimensional synchrotron X-ray diffraction study on [001] C -oriented rhombohedral Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3)O 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT) ferroelectric crystals to characterize the domain structure variation during the AC-poling process. Our study clearly reveals that the AC electric field has an ability to efficiently merge the ferroelectric domains on both sides of 71o domain walls, leading to a considerable increase of domain size and thus a significant enhancement of electromechanical properties. In addition, this work indicates that, for the AC-poled [001] C -oriented rhombohedral PMN-PT crystal, the most stable state should be the lamellar domain structure with only 109o domain walls and the same volume fractions of the two types of ferroelectric domains on both sides of domain walls, which is expected to benefit the design of high-performance ferroelectric via domain or domain wall engineering. The property degradation observed in thin Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN–PT) crystals is believed to relate to large domains and subsequent clamping induced by the surface boundary. In this work, the properties were investigated as function of domain size, using controlled poling. The degraded piezoelectric and dielectric properties of thin PMN–PT were found to increase significantly with decreasing domain size. Furthermore, the fine domain structure was found to be stable at 3kVcm−1 after 7.0×105 negative-pulse cycles. These properties make PMN–PT crystals suitable for high-frequency (>20MHz) ultrasound transducers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
