In this paper we present a study that aimed to reflect on the implications of the use of cambio verbs in the acquisition process of Spanish as an L2 by Brazilian learners and to analyze the effects of a pedagogical intervention based on a self-instruction about these verbs in predicative constructions, contrasting their aspectual properties. The experiment was carried out with a group of participants who performed sentence acceptability judgment tasks with the target verbs (ponerse, quedarse, hacerse and volverse) in predicative constructions, interspersed by the self-instruction. Data analysis revealed that there was a slight increase of the accuracy and the reaction times decreased afterthe instruction. These results, although without a solid statistical significance, may indicate the potential of this pedagogical intervention to contribute with the learning of cambio verbs in Spanish. In this paper, our aim is to present the results of our researchs about the anaphoric accusative object in the Spanish variety of Madrid and in the Brazilian Portuguese variety of São Paulo and to propose a theoretical analysis to these constructions based on minimalist developments (CHOMSKY, 1999, 2000, 2004). Interviews of the Spanish variety of Madrid (CESTERO MANCERA et al. 2014) and Brazilian Portuguese variety of São Paulo (LIMA-HERNANDES; VICENTE, 2012) were analysed. Regarding the theoretical approach, the biological (CHOMSKY, 1981, 1986) and social (LABOV, 2008; WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2009) perspectives on language were combined. We observed the effect of the antecedent referenciality, of the determinant indefinite features, of the bare nouns, of the structure and lexical aspect of verbs on possibility of elipsis in the Spanish variety of Madrid. Concerning the Brazilian Portuguese variety of São Paulo, the null objects were almost categorical and the lexical pronoun presented restrictions to less referencial antecedents. These results ressemble the tendencies of our previous research (SIMÕES, 2015) and the Spanish varieties of País Vasco (LANDA, 1993) and Quito (SUÑER; YÉPEZ, 1988). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FUNCTIONAL discourse grammar , *DIGITAL media , *BLOGS , *ACQUISITION of data , *CORPORA - Abstract
This paper intends to present an analysis of two uses of adversative conjunction pero found in a Spanish written corpus in digital media. The theoretical-methodological apparatus used is the Functional Discourse Grammar - FDG (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008). According to RAE (2009), pero is coordinative conjunction in which presents two opposing clauses. From the point of view of FDG, however, these two units configure Discourse Acts in an unequal relationship, which engender Concession rhetorical function. The speaker presents an Act to grant information in order to then present another Act that he considers arguably more relevant. Some of the uses found in this study are beyond that interpretation. The research universe consists of data collected from blogs and extracted from CORPES (Corpus del Español del Siglo XXI), from the Real Academia Española. It was verified that, besides being used between two Discourse Acts, it can also introduce Moves and also emphasize a Subact previously presented, being a valuable element for the speaker's argument. this paper analyzes the significance of the expression "argentino neutro" [neutral Argentinian], used from 2009 to 2015 in official documents on the education portal Educ.ar and on the Ministry of Education's various TV channels ("Encuentro," "Pakapaka" and "DeporTV"). By examining style manuals in detail from Encuentro and Pakapaka, corresponding to the years 2012-2015, we will attempt to show that these documents construct a linguistic model alternate to the various attempts at Spanish language unification, in particular "Panhispanism" or so-called "neutral Spanish." Moreover, this alternative linguistic model was consistently reflected in the Ministry of Education's television programming, which exhibited a much more diverse linguistic representation in Argentinian media than usual.

This study aims to map researches on Contrastive Linguistics in Brazil that emphasize the contrast between Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish, from 1988 to 2010. The mapping was carried out with the following specific objectives: (i) categorize the researches in the analytical models of Contrastive Linguistics, (ii) identify the Brazilian institutions where those researches are carried out, and (iii) classify the researches according to the linguistic approach employed. This work consists of a bibliographical survey whose data were obtained from the theses database of CAPES in November 2011. The search criterion (without specific date) used the following search terms combined: Contrastive Linguistics Spanish, Contrastive Analysis Spanish, Error Analysis Spanish, Interlanguage Spanish, Transfer Spanish, Interference Spanish, and Fossilization Spanish. The output was a total of 111 studies, whose largest concentration is in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, featuring 27 and 64 studies, respectively. The preferred approach concerns the morphosyntactic aspects, namely the pronominal system of the two languages . The present study concludes that researches in Brazilian universities have developed important work on the morpho syntactic, lexical-semantic and phonetic-phonological aspects, however the work with pragmatic or discursive approaches is still incipient.

FOREIGN language education , *SPANISH language , *PUBLIC schools , *SOCIAL stratification , *SOCIAL status - Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to understand, through the Spanish teacher's, the pedagogic coordinator's, and the principal's accounts, two beliefs about the teaching and learning of Spanish in an elementary public school that has included Spanish as a foreign language in its syllabus since 2000. Beliefs are seen as socially historical and political products, connected to the broad sociopolitical contexts (BARCELOS; KALAJA, 2011). Results suggest that the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language in that school seems to be discursively an artifice to maintain the social stratification and the status quo [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to present and discuss the results of an empirical survey that took place in 2008 involving students of Spanish from a Center of Foreign Languages Studies (Centros de Estudos de Línguas) sponsored by the State of São Paulo. The goal of the survey was to understand and measure, as far as possible, the degree of student´s motivation in the classroom as well as its underlying causes. Taking into account that until now these Centers are responsible to enforce the law that made mandatory the teaching of Spanish for high school students (as far as public schools in the State are concerned), we considered appropriate to publish these results so that the debate engendered by it could contribute to a motivating, and therefore more efficient, foreign language education. The survey, that included quantitative and qualitative information, was based on a sample of 161 students. The results suggested that i) the students were motivated during Spanish classes; ii) the main causes of motivation reported by students were the professor´s personality, the effort put in practice, the content , the autonomy in the choice of the language and the pleasure related to learning a foreign language; iii) one of the main causes of demotivation appointed by the survey was the absence of knowledge about cultural aspects related to the language being studied; iv) the activities described as the most motivating were, in this sequence, games and amusing activities, videos/films and songs; v) the activities considered the least motivating were seminars, oral exams/tests and composition.

This paper presents a generative analysis of accusative clitics involved in clitic-doubling constructions in Spanish. It will be shown that this kind of clitic does not constitute a single unitary element, but must be classified in two types, the anaphoric one and the deictic one. Whereas the former have been analyzed in early works such as Jaeggli (1982, 1986b), the occurrence of the latter may be related to the focalization of a constituent in situ. This analysis parallels with Suñer (1995), treating negative concord as a polarity phenomena, once the present work reveals a correlation between the syntactic realization of negative words in negative polarity and the realization of a clitic doubling a focused NP.
