A biomorphic α-MoO3 ceramic was successfully derived from paper templates. By the infiltration of a Mo-contained solution into paper templates, followed by calcinations at 500°C in air, the cellulose fibers of paper were converted into branches composing of orthorhombic α-MoO3 crystals with grain size ranging from 0.5 to 2 μm. In the final product, the initial fibrous structure of the paper templates was retained. This simple biotemplate method provides a cost-effective and ecofriendly route to obtain advanced self-assembling biomorphic ceramics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we describe a method to compute spatial scales for images acquired by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover (Mars Science Laboratory, MSL). The method is based on the assumption that the rover stands on an infinite plane that may have any orientation with respect to the local gravity vector. While not new, it is the first time that this method is systematically applied to Martian images acquired by a lander. A continuously run software pipeline processes the images acquired by the rover within a 20 m radius, adds approximate scalebars to the raw images, and generates, whenever possible, rectified (warped) versions of those images. The products of this software pipeline and the chemical compositions of relevant rover science targets from NASA's Planetary Data System archive, are made available to the public via the Approximate Scale for Images and Chemistry website, which has been developed in collaboration with the Planetary Data System Analyst's Notebook for the MSL mission. Inulin and oligofructose are classes of prebiotics belonging to a group of nondigestible carbohydrates referred to as inulin‐type fructans. While short‐chain fructooligosaccharides are enzymatically synthesized from the hydrolysis and transglycosylation of sucrose. Inulin‐type fructans and short‐chain fructooligosaccharides act as carbon sources for selective pathways supporting digestive health including altering the composition of the gut microbiota along with improving transit time. Due to their physicochemical properties, inulin‐type fructans and short‐chain fructooligosaccharides have been widely used in the food industry as partial replacements for both fat and sugar. Yet, levels of replacement need to be carefully considered as it may result in changes to physical and sensory properties that could be detected by consumers. Furthermore, it has been reported depending on the processing parameters used during production that inulin‐type fructans and short‐chain fructooligosaccharides may or may not undergo structural alterations. Therefore, this paper reviews the role of inulin‐type fructans and short‐chain fructooligosaccharides within the food industry as fat and sugar replacers and texture modifiers, their impact on final sensory properties, and to what degree processing parameters are likely to impact their functional properties. This paper deals with the questions of how network proximity influences the structure of inter-regional collaborations and how it interacts with geography. I first introduce a new, theoretically grounded measure of inter-regional network proximity. Then, I use data on European scientific co-publications in the field of chemistry between 2001 and 2005 to assess those questions. The main findings reveal that inter-regional network proximity is important in determining future collaborations but its effect is mediated by geography. The Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2) includes a detailed representation of chemistry throughout the atmosphere in the Community Atmosphere Model with chemistry and Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model configurations. These model configurations use the Model for Ozone and Related chemical Tracers (MOZART) family of chemical mechanisms, covering the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere. The new MOZART tropospheric chemistry scheme (T1) has a number of updates over the previous version (MOZART‐4) in CESM, including improvements to the oxidation of isoprene and terpenes, organic nitrate speciation, and aromatic speciation and oxidation and thus improved representation of ozone and secondary organic aerosol precursors. An evaluation of the present‐day simulations of CESM2 being provided for Climate Model Intercomparison Project round 6 (CMIP6) is presented. These simulations, using the anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions from the inventories specified for CMIP6, as well as online calculation of emissions of biogenic compounds, lightning NO, dust, and sea salt, indicate an underestimate of anthropogenic emissions of a variety of compounds, including carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The simulation of surface ozone in the southeast United States is improved over previous model versions, largely due to the improved representation of reactive nitrogen and organic nitrate compounds resulting in a lower ozone production rate than in CESM1 but still overestimates observations in summer. The simulation of tropospheric ozone agrees well with ozonesonde observations in many parts of the globe. The comparison of NOx and PAN to aircraft observations indicates the model simulates the nitrogen budget well. Although it is widely agreed that the distal K‐Pg clay layer contains ejecta from the Chicxulub impact site, no current models can explain how these ejecta travel from the impact site around the globe. A widely accepted hypothesis is that impact spherules and shocked minerals in the layer were ejected from an expanding impact plume and traveled to their final destination on a ballistic path. Shocked minerals, however, are ejected at too low a velocity to reach distal sites, and plausible ballistic ejection models cannot explain the observed ejecta distribution. Using a suite of numerical simulations, we find that intense interactions between the ejecta curtain and atmosphere generate a fast‐moving dust cloud traveling at speeds of a few kilometers per second, which carries a substantial fraction of ejecta, including shocked minerals, to distal sites. We conclude that ejecta curtain material must make a major contribution to the formation of the distal K‐Pg layer. Plain Language Summary: We first discovered that the Earth had been hit by a large asteroid 66 million years ago when a thin clay layer was found to have an extraterrestrial chemistry. This layer is unique in the geological record—it can be found all around the world and contains material that originated from the asteroid and Chicxulub impact site. Inorganic polymer binders (IPBs) are synthesized by the activation of aluminosilicate precursors with an alkaline solution such as sodium hydroxide. This paper studies the relationship between the composition, structure, and solubility of sodium aluminosilicate hydrates (N–A–S–(H)), the primary binding phase in IPBs. It was found that changing the aqueous Si/Al ratio had little effect on N–A–S–(H) Si/Al ratio, but small changes in the aqueous Si/Na ratio led to substantial changes in N–A–S–(H) Si/Al ratio. Early N–A–S–(H) products were found to be X‐ray amorphous, but a rapid transition to the crystalline phase faujasite occurred after several weeks of aging. The transition of the solid amorphous phase to faujasite was accompanied by a rapid drop in aqueous Si(IV) and Al(III) concentrations. Solubility products were determined, temporally, for the N–A–S–(H) before and after the transition to faujasite and represent new contributions to the literature, particularly for the amorphous state. The results presented here provide fundamental insights that are needed for the development of kinetic and thermodynamic models that can establish phase balances and evolutions of IPBs across a range of precursor compositions and synthesis conditions. Calcium‐silicate‐hydrates (C–S–H) gel, the main binding phase in cementitious materials, has a complex multiscale texture. Despite decades of intensive research, the relation between C–S–H's chemical composition and mesoscale texture remains experimentally limited to probe and theoretically elusive to comprehend. While the nanogranular texture explains a wide range of experimental observations, understanding the fundamental processes that control particles' size and shape are still obscure. This paper strives to establish a link between the chemistry of C–S–H nanolayers at the molecular level and formation of C–S–H globules at the mesoscale via the potential‐of‐mean‐force (PMF) coarse‐graining approach. We propose a new thermomechanical load‐cycling scheme that effectively packs polydisperse coarse‐grained nanolayers and creates representative C–S–H gel structures at various packing densities. We find that the C–S–H nanolayers percolate at ~10% packing fraction, significantly below the percolation of ideal hard contact oblate particles and rather close to that of overlapping ellipsoids. The agglomeration of C–S–H nanolayers leads to the formation of globular clusters with the effective thickness of ~5 nm, in striking agreement with small angle neutron and X‐ray scattering measurements as well as nanoscale imaging observations. The study of pore structure and local packing distribution in the course of densification shows a transition from a connected pore network to isolated nanoporosity. Furthermore, the calculated mechanical properties are in excellent agreement with statistical nanoindentation experiments, positioning nanolayered morphology as a finer description of C–S–H globule models. This study assesses the impact of geographical mobility of academic researchers on the formation and dynamics of their coauthorship network, through a bibliometric analysis. Based on 80 French chemists' careers (9310 publications and 14,783 coauthors), panel models point out first that coauthorship network features are independent of individual mobility: there is a stable volume of new coauthors and the researcher's lab colleagues per article, in all generations and career stages. Second, it highlights that mobility (i) allows network diversification but only in the short term and restricted to the new city attended and (ii) reduces the likelihood of sustaining collaborations with colleagues from the previously attended cities. The completion of a crystal structure determination is often hampered by the presence of embedded solvent molecules or ions that are seriously disordered. Their contribution to the calculated structure factors in the least-squares refinement of a crystal structure has to be included in some way. Traditionally, an atomistic solvent disorder model is attempted. Such an approach is generally to be preferred, but it does not always lead to a satisfactory result and may even be impossible in cases where channels in the structure are filled with continuous electron density. This paper documents the SQUEEZE method as an alternative means of addressing the solvent disorder issue. It conveniently interfaces with the 2014 version of the least-squares refinement program SHELXL [Sheldrick (2015). Acta Cryst. C 71. In the press] and other refinement programs that accept externally provided fixed contributions to the calculated structure factors. The PLATON SQUEEZE tool calculates the solvent contribution to the structure factors by back-Fourier transformation of the electron density found in the solvent-accessible region of a phase-optimized difference electron-density map. The actual least-squares structure refinement is delegated to, for example, SHELXL. The current versions of PLATON SQUEEZE and SHELXL now address several of the unnecessary complications with the earlier implementation of the SQUEEZE procedure that were a necessity because least-squares refinement with the now superseded SHELXL97 program did not allow for the input of fixed externally provided contributions to the structure-factor calculation. It is no longer necessary to subtract the solvent contribution temporarily from the observed intensities to be able to use SHELXL for the least-squares refinement, since that program now accepts the solvent contribution from an external file ( .fab file) if the ABIN instruction is used. In addition, many twinned structures containing disordered solvents are now also treatable by SQUEEZE. The details of a SQUEEZE calculation are now automatically included in the CIF archive file, along with the unmerged reflection data. The current implementation of the SQUEEZE procedure is described, and discussed and illustrated with three examples. Chemical striations occur in various types of inorganic melts like lava and glass melts, and affect the physical properties of materials. This paper reports a quantitative study of the chemical striations in iron-rich aluminosilicate melts and glasses. In this study, an integrated method has been established, which consists of sample preparation, image acquiring, Fourier Transformation, and characteristic value determination. The principle of the established method is illustrated by picture processing-based simulation. The extent of the chemical striations and the diffusion length of the striae can be measured using this method. It is found that the extent of the chemical striations is rather sensitive to the melting technique. Furthermore, the impact of chemical diffusion and stirring on the extent of striations is revealed using the picture processing-based simulation approach. The diffusion process eliminates small striae and reduces the intensity of the larger ones. At a constant temperature, the diffusion determines the transformation rate of an inhomogeneous melt into a homogeneous one. During stirring, the size distribution of the large striae becomes broader, but the overall intensity of the striae becomes smaller. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many attempts have been focused on preparing highly porous scaffolds with appropriate mechanical strength. This paper has developed a new route to enhance the compressive strength of porous hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffold (porosity: ∼83%, mean pore size: ∼740 μm). Briefly, this route included a nanostructure coating of forsterite (Mg2SiO4) on struts of porous HA. The coating microstructure consisted of the grains with the range between 35 and 80 nm and nanosize pores that could be detected by scanning electron microscopy observation. This simple method improved the compressive strength of highly porous HA from 0.12 to 1.61 MPa. The scaffolds obtained provided a good mechanical support while maintaining bioactivity, and hence they could be used as tissue engineering scaffolds for low-load-bearing applications. 1. Grasses using the C4 photosynthetic pathway dominate today's savanna ecosystems and account for ~20% of terrestrial carbon fixation. However, this dominant status was reached only recently, during a period of C4 grassland expansion in the Late Miocene and Early Pliocene (4–8 Myr ago). Declining atmospheric CO2 has long been considered the key driver of this event, but new geological evidence casts doubt on the idea, forcing a reconsideration of the environmental cues for C4 plant success. 2. Here, I evaluate the current hypotheses and debate in this field, beginning with a discussion of the role of CO2 in the evolutionary origins, rather than expansion, of C4 grasses. Atmospheric CO2 starvation is a plausible selection agent for the C4 pathway, but a time gap of around 10 Myr remains between major decreases in CO2 during the Oligocene, and the earliest current evidence of C4 plants. 3. An emerging ecological perspective explains the Miocene expansion of C4 grasslands via changes in climatic seasonality and the occurrence of fire. However, the climatic drivers of this event are debated and may vary among geographical regions. 4. Uncertainty in these areas could be reduced significantly by new directions in ecological research, especially the discovery that grass species richness along rainfall gradients shows contrasting patterns in different C4 clades. By re-evaluating a published data set, I show that increasing seasonality of rainfall is linked to changes in the relative abundance of the major C4 grass clades Paniceae and Andropogoneae. I propose that the explicit inclusion of these ecological patterns would significantly strengthen climate change hypotheses of Miocene C4 grassland expansion. Critically, they allow a new series of testable predictions to be made about the fossil record. 5. Synthesis. The formation of the British Pharmacological Society coincided almost exactly with a series of ground-breaking studies that ushered in an entirely new field of research--that of lipid mediator pharmacology. For many years following their chemical characterisation, lipids were considered only to be of dietary or structural importance. From the 1930s, all this changed--slowly at first and then more dramatically in the 1970s and 1980s with the emergence of the prostaglandins (PGs), the first intercellular mediators to be clearly derived from lipids, in a dynamic on-demand system. The PGs exhibit a wide range of biological activities that are still being evaluated and their properties underlie the action of one of the world's all-time favourite medicines, aspirin, as well as its more modern congeners. This paper traces the development of the PG field, with particular emphasis on the skillfull utilisation of the twin techniques of bioassay and analytical chemistry by U.K. and Swedish scientists, and the intellectual interplay between them that led to the award of a joint Nobel Prize to the principal researchers in the PG field, half a century after the first discovery of these astonishingly versatile mediators. The deoxyoctanucleotide (5′-3′)d(A-A-G-G-A-G-G-T), which is complementary to the 3′ end of 16-S RNA, inhibits the formation of the complex between the 30-S subunit and MS2 RNA described in the preceding paper. If the complex is preformed, the octanucleotide cannot prevent entry of the complex into the ribosome cycle upon supplementation with the components for protein synthesis. The subunit · MS2-RNA complex is unable to bind the octanucleotide. It is concluded that in the subunit · phage-RNA initiation precursor the 16-S terminus is base-paired with a complementary MS2 RNA sequence. Edeine, aurintricarboxylic acid and antibodies against ribosomal protein S1 prevent the association of phage RNA with 30-S subunits. These compounds do not, however, inhibit the binding of (5′-3′)d(A-A-G-G-A-G-G-T) to 30-S subunits. Adult bovine aortic endothelial (ABAE) cells, exposed to serum-free medium, specifically bind 125I-labeled human high-density lipoprotein (125I-HDL). Addition of human lipoprotein-deficient serum (LPDS) reduces the specific binding of 125I-HDL in a concentration-dependent manner, such that LPDS at a concentration of 6 mg protein/ml almost completely inhibits the specific binding of 125I-HDL. ABAE cultures exposed to 125I-labeled LPDS (125I-LPDS) specifically bind two peptides, which appear as minor iodinated components in 125I-LPDS. The binding of these two components is abolished in the presence of excess amounts of unlabeled LPDS or HDL. Preincubation of ABAE cells with 25-hydroxycholesterol (25-HC) results in an increase in the binding of the two 125I-LPDS components, similar to the increase observed in 125I-HDL binding in the presence of 25-HC. These two LPDS components comigrate on sodium dodecyl sulfate/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) with apolipoproteins A-I and A-IV of molecular masses 28 kDa and 43 kDa respectively. Furthermore, these two proteins were transfered from the SDS gel to nitrocellulose paper and interacted specifically with anti-(A-I) and anti-(A-IV) sera respectively. When ABAE cultures, pretreated with 25-HC in the presence of LPDS, are subjected to cell-surface iodination, the A-IV appears as one of the major proteins on the cell surface accessible to iodination. The interaction of A-IV with the cell surface of 25-HC-treated cells is not specific to ABAE cells and appears also in human skin fibroblasts. Analysis of the relative amounts of various apolipoproteins in the 125I-HDL bound to ABAE cells demonstrates a decrease in the relative amount of iodinated A-II concomitant with increase in the relative amounts of the other iodinated apolipoproteins, when compared to the composition of the native 125I-HDL. These changes are similar whether the binding is done in the presence or absence of LPDS. It indicates that the decrease in 125I-HDL binding in the presence of LPDS is not due to displacement of the iodinated apolipoproteins A-I and A-IV in the 125I-HDL by unlabeled A-I and A-IV present in LPDS. The results indicate that free apolipoproteins A-I and A-IV, present in LPDS, can displace HDL on the cell surface of ABAE cells. Thus, free A-I and A-IV, present in plasma, control the binding of HDL to endothelial cells and may regulate the process of cholesterol removal from the cells performed by HDL. With the help of an automatic protein sequenator, we have verified a prediction made by us in a recent paper, namely that residue 16 in Candida krusei cytochrome c is a glutamine and not a glutamic acid. Neurospora crassa cytochrome c now remains the only mitochondrial cytochrome c which apparently does not have a glutamine at this position. In the course of this investigation, from two strains of Candida krusei we isolated two cytochromes which differ in amino acid composition. Amino acid analyses of L-lactate dehydrogenase from baker's show that the minimum molecular weight (53 000 daltons) of the protein is much lower than found in the literature (80 000). Morbus Parkinson occurs when nerve cells that produce dopamine begin to die. The shortage of dopamine leads to movement problems in affected individuals. 6‐[18F]FDOPA is extensively used to evaluate the progression of Parkinsons disease. Bold stick projections of this PET tracer, as well as a neuronal network, are seen in the background. Unfortunately, conventional procedures to produce 6‐[18F]FDOPA are cumbersome. Thus, several recent developments aim at the simplification of this radiosynthesis. In our work, we studied the applicability of the recently reported Ni‐mediated radiofluorination approach for daily routine production of 6‐[18F]FDOPA.
