This essay argues that the three concepts of (1) firms' operant resources, (2) firms' masterful operant resources, and (3) masterful marketing academic competences extend S-D logic to the marketing discipline, itself. Specifically, this essay argues that individual marketing academics can, like firms, exhibit a masterful ability for addressing the marketing discipline's important problems. We argue that this ability, this competence, can attain the status of 'masterful' in certain individuals and provide evidence that Professor Michael J. Baker did, indeed, have a masterful marketing competence. That is, he did indeed have a significant body of marketing knowledge, and he did indeed use this knowledge in a masterful manner to address important problems of the marketing discipline. In embedded applications and digital signal processing systems, multipliers are crucial components. In these applications, there is an increasing need for energy-efficient circuits. We use an approximate adder for error tolerance in the computational process to improve performance and reduce power consumption. Due to human perceptual constraints, computational errors do not significantly affect applications like image, audio, and video processing. Adiabatic logic (AL), which recycles energy, can also be used to build circuits that require less energy. In this work, we propose a carry save array multiplier employing an approximate adder based on CMOS logic and clocked CMOS adiabatic logic (CCAL) to conserve power. Additionally, using a precise full adder, multiplier parameters like average power and power delay product are calculated and compared with the multiplier. AbstractWhat explains whether someone who supports an armed movement in a foreign war turns to plotting a terrorist attack at home? Using data on 129 Australian supporters of Islamic State, this paper examines the impact of contextual and dynamic factors relating to strategic logic, mobilising structures and security measures. It finds that the strategic priority Islamic State publicly placed on transnational terrorism at a given time was most important, followed by whether the supporter was subjected to travel restrictions and law enforcement interactions, only then followed by micro-level factors traditionally focused on in quantitative studies of individual involvement in terrorism. This article explores how China’s propaganda system operates as an aspect of governance, especially how propagandists understand the public opinion they seek to influence. Understanding the concept of yuqing (public opinion conditions) is crucial for understanding propaganda in China. Yuqing is considered akin to the medical condition of public opinion (yulun). Hence, propaganda is treatment that the state provides to an organic social body of public opinion, which is subject to constant monitoring and treatment. The party-state is keen on establishing standards and norms about what a healthy and clean society should be. Thus, this paper argues that the propaganda system does not contribute to responsive authoritarianism by collecting grassroots information, but instead prioritizes cleansing public discourse in accordance with party-state logic. Furthermore, contrary to the belief that authoritarian propaganda focuses on demobilizing collective resistance and forcing compliance, China’s propaganda system disciplines the public by actively constructing discursive norms. There has been a plethora of insightful critical approaches to studying borders, but many still produce versions of borders that replicate essentialist readings of the border. In this paper, I draw out the tensions in critical accounts of bordering practices by demonstrating that borders are implicitly essentialised, and this has consequences for how they may be resisted. Critical approaches frequently conceive of borders as sites of power and resistance; I argue that these concepts have significant potential for political mobilisation, and that this should be capitalised upon. I make the case for using Spivak’s logic of ‘strategic essentialism’ when understanding borders, in order to foreground political resistance to bordering practices whilst allowing for a greater degree of conceptual clarity without the loss of criticality. Furthermore, rendering essentialisations as explicit rather than implicit serves to aid scholars themselves; this allows for reflexive acknowledgements of positionalities, reinforcing criticality in border studies. This article explores the degree to which citizenship in the early Turkish Republic was informed by a biopolitical logic of the administration of population as a social body. Inevitability to reduce the size, cost and complexity of multilevel inverter (MLI) to evolve simplified RSC (Reduced switch count) MLIs has created diversified effects such as limited switching redundancies which further restricted modularity and flexibility of implementing PWM schemes. Among the PWM schemes of RSC-MLIs, modified reduced carrier (MRC) PWM with unified switching logic (USL) is the simplest and claims to be superior with the state of art in terms of implementation, line harmonic performance, imposing least controller computational burden (of 6.5 µS to realise a three-phase seven-level RSC-MLI) by adapting minimal carrier constraints. However, this is valid for sophisticated digital controllers such as dSPACE MicroLabBox, but not for low-end cost-effective controllers such as dSPACE1104 (imposing a computational burden of nearly 25 µS to control a single-phase RSC-MLI). Thus, this paper proposes an improved USL which adopts no carrier constraints and operates with less computational burden over the conventional USL. The proposed USL gives flexibility to the user to implement a part of the switching logic with analogue circuits and thereby avoid the requirement of high-end digital controller. The scalability and superiority of the proposed USL is demonstrated for symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations of popular cascaded T-type RSC-MLI. While much has been said on the connection between dominant rationality standards and systemic oppression, the specific role of logic in supporting epistemic injustice has not received much explicit attention. In this paper I highlight several ways in which it is possible for logic – as a discipline, as a particular system and as a gloss for rational common sense – to be implicated in epistemic injustice. Concrete examples are given for testimonial, content-based, hermeneutical and contributory injustices. Understanding social space is a prerequisite for analyzing local environmental protection. A new theorized social space – the environmental field - is proposed to analyze local environmental protection practices in China, as the existing three types (environmental state, community, and network) can miss the main logics, actors, or practices. First, the actors' positions in the field, where environmental and political-economic capital operate, significantly affects their perceptions, practices, and power relations. Second, the field transforms – in terms of new power relations and orders – if certain actors have accumulated significant temporary successes from the struggles with others after rupturing moments. This theory is illustrated by Latent Transition Analyses of the two species of capital in County T, China, from 2014 to 2019. I then analyze selected actors to examine whether their environmental protection practices echo the LTA results and whether the theory could explain their practices and transformation. Modern e-commerce systems are more likely focused on mechanisms of security, such as secure transactional protocols, cryptographic schemes and parameter sanitization, and it is assumed that putting these in place will guarantee a secure e-commerce application. However, vulnerabilities in the business application logic itself are often ignored which can make the effect of these security mechanisms null and void. Essentially, the weakest link can be at the server rather than client because of business logic and insecure server-side business components, its security ignoring is another factor, which is done at developer's peril. This paper focuses on the weakest link (component's logic subversion) in the e-commerce system. We outline a logical attack (subversion attack, class Design Flaw) that would not be prevented by the deployment of the mechanisms commonly used in e-commerce systems. To further investigate this problem, we propose a security assurance methodology for service component-oriented application that will be practiced through threat modeling and component fault detection model with further modeling component and its application using unified modeling language secure-design approach with a valid technique (verification, validation model for security-by-design testing) for design flaw detection to avoid the business logic problem in component-based e-commerce applications from existing application logic. Bruno Whittle (2019) has recently extended Kripke's semantical theory of truth to languages containing generalized quantifiers. There are reasons for axiomatizing semantical theories, and for regarding Halbach and Horsten's PKF as a good axiomatization of Kripke's. PKF is a theory in Partial Logic. The main problem in making sense of Mitsein as an aspect of Dasein in Being and Time concerns the sense in which individual Dasein is an ‘I’, given that it can be either an ‘anyone-self’ or an ‘authentic self’. Though it is clear that the anyone-self relates directly to das Man, the relation of the authentic self to others is debatable. In this paper, I reexamine the relations between self and others by making sense of the referent of each mode of selfhood, with special attention to the problem of explaining the relations between the two. The problem, I claim, can be solved by bringing into relief a certain conception of mereology (theory of parthood relations) that underlies Heidegger’s arguments. As I will demonstrate, Heidegger uses a mereological terminology that appropriates Husserl’s logic of parts and wholes from the Logical Investigations. In view of this, I suggest understanding individual Dasein, both qua anyone-self and qua authentic self, as a moment, i.e. a dependent part of an open-ended whole. The apparent gap between anyone-self and authentic self can be better understood as a shift of focus between two different aspects of being the same type of dependent part of a whole. AbstractMachiavelli redirects attention away from classical and Christian imagination toward the “effectual truth.” He turns imagination away from what is past and transcendent so it attends to what is possible. I argue this logic of the imagination is one of the important operative elements in the work of Adam Smith. Smith’s understanding and application of the imagination is key to his founding the “commercial society,” for the sake of “universal opulence,” as well as to the moral sensibilities he claims are bound to the new political economy. Smith’s project contributes to the commercialization of the imagination–an intentional effort to restore imagination to its properly useful place in the wake of the Machiavellian imaginary redirection, while likewise mitigating the worst, or negative, effects of “Machiavellianism.” The effectual truth of the imagination, according to Smith, is its Machiavellian focus on “the things of the world” without falling entirely into Machiavellli’s teaching to “learn to be able not to be good.” [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractOne of the most debated topics among those who study heuristics is the question of their rationality. The present paper proposes an answer to this question based on the ideas of instrumental rationality and the probabilistic nature of heuristic judgments and decisions. Accordingly, it is argued that the rationality of heuristics is determined by their effectiveness, i.e., their ability to achieve a desired result. At the same time, heuristics do not always produce such a result, but only in a certain number of cases. Therefore, their effectiveness should not be evaluated by the binary logic criterion (effective/ineffective) but by the probabilistic criterion, i.e., by how often they lead to the desired result. Each heuristic has a certain objective probability of achieving such a result, which determines its rationality. However, this probability is mostly unknown to us, so when relying on heuristics, we are likely guided by a subjective perception of it, which serves as a metacognitive cue about the probability of the conclusion obtained with the help of this heuristic. In Indian logic, Nigrahasthāna (fault) generally refers to the occasion of defeat in debates. The fundamental theme of Vādanyāya is to discuss the issue of fault in debates. Based on the standpoint of Buddhist logic, Dharmakīrti in Vādanyāya, starting from the argumentative structure and rules of Buddhism, creatively developed the theory of fault in his debate logic, which can also be seen as a revision of the theory of fault in the Nyāya school. Delving into the logic and culture of the Nyāya school, he critically analyzed and accepted various types of faults in the Nyāyan list of faults. Dharmakīrti’s thoughts about fault can be explored from four aspects: first, establishing the logical rationality of debate; second, innovating the classification criteria of faults; third, criticizing the theory of fault in the Nyāya school; and fourth, accepting the reasonable types of faults in the Nyāya school. This paper stresses the importance of identifying the nature of an author's conception of logic when using terms from modern logic in order to avoid, as far as possible, injecting our own conception of logic in the author's texts. Sundholm (2012. “‘Inference versus consequence” revisited: Inference, conditional, implication’, Synthese, 187, 943–956) points out that inferences are staged at the epistemic level and are made out of judgments, not propositions. Since it is now standard to read Aristotelian sullogismoi as inferences, I have taken Alexander of Aphrodisias's commentaries to Aristotle's logical treatises as a basis for arguing that the premises and conclusions should be read as judgments rather than as propositions. Under this reading, when Alexander speaks of protaseis, we should not read the modern notion of proposition, but rather what we now call judgments. The point is not just a matter of terminology, it is about the conception of logic this terminology conveys. Buridan endorses the basic idea that q follows from p iff it is impossible that p is true but q is false. Since he also accepts the law that, if p is impossible, the conjunction (p ∧ q) must be impossible, he comes to regard the principle ‘Ex impossibili quodlibet’ (EIQ) as basically correct. However, his logic is based on a ‘nominalist’ view according to which propositions are tokens of spoken, written or thought language existing in space of time, and the truth of such a proposition presupposes that it exists. This conception prompted Buridan to modify the definition of ‘consequence’, but none of his attempts was fully successful. Yet, a large part of his theory of consequences is based on the usual account of necessary truth-conservation. As regards principle EIQ, Buridan distinguishes two variants of impossibility. Proposition p is possible iff the state of affairs as described by p is possible; this doesn’t guarantee, however, that p is ‘possibly true’. E.g. ‘No proposition is negative’ is considered by Buridan as describing a possible state of affairs, but this proposition is not possibly true, because in order to be true, it would have to exist, and as soon as it comes into existence, it becomes false. Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Dashtakī (d. 1498) has proposed a solution to the liar paradox according to which the liar sentence is a self-referential sentence in which the predicate 'false' is iterated. Discussing the conditions for the truth-aptness of the sentences with nested and iterated instances of the predicates 'true' and/or 'false', Dashtakī argued that the liar sentence is not truth-apt at all. In the tradition of Arabic logic, the central elements of Dashtakī's solution—the self-referentiality of the liar sentence and the implicit iteration of the predicate 'false'—were initially highlighted in two earlier solutions proposed by Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (d. 1274) and Shams al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (d. 1322), respectively. Here I investigate all three solutions and show that Dashtakī's solution can be taken as a synthesis of the other two. None of these solutions seems to be convincing at the end of the day. Nevertheless, all of them include significant logical and philosophical insights. In particular, although Dashtakī's solution is not itself compelling, it is only a few steps away from a promising solution. The appendix to this paper includes translations of the relevant passages. Wittgenstein's conception of the general form of a truth function given in thesis 6 can be presented as a sort of a trade-off: the author of the Tractatus is unable to reconcile the simplicity of his original idea of a series of forms with the simplicity of his generalisation of Sheffer's stroke; therefore, he is forced to sacrifice one of them. As we argue in this paper, the choice he makes – to weaken the logical constraints put on the concept of a series of forms, thus effectively metaphorising that concept for the sake of upholding the N-operation's role of generating the series – is unfortunate. An actual expansion of a series of truth functions as defined in 6 would require either making decisions at each step (Anscombe) or outwardly rejecting the concept of a series (Sundholm). However, neither is faithful to Wittgenstein's own fundamental intuitions regarding the nature of logic. For this reason, a different trade-off that prioritises upholding the basic features of a series of forms over the simplicity of the operation that generates that series seems to be much more reasonable. We offer such a trade-off by developing the schema already present in the Tractatus (5.101). The key element of our alternative solution is the construction of an operation that can perform the task of producing all consecutive truth functions of a given collection of atomic propositions as an invariant difference between any base and its successor throughout the series. We define it as a composition of three functions (in an algebraic sense): the first turns a symbol of a given truth function into a binary number, the second increments that number, the third turns the result back into a symbol of another truth function. Recently, in 'An inquiry on Fakhr al-Dīn Rāzī's authorship of Al-manṭiq al-kab $ \bar{\iota} $ ι ¯ r (MS Aḥmad iii, no. 3401)', we refuted the quite common view among historians of Arabic logic as to attribute Al-manṭiq al-kab $ \bar{\iota} $ ι ¯ r (Major [book on] logic) to Fakhr al-dīn Rāzī; however, in that paper, we could not identify the real author of the book. In this paper, we try to show that Al-manṭiq al-kab $ \bar{\iota} $ ι ¯ r was written by Burhān al-dīn Nasafī (1203–1288), who authored another book, Sharḥ Asās al-kiyāsa whose logical part is very similar to Al-manṭiq al-kab $ \bar{\iota} $ ι ¯ r in the following significant features: the titles of chapters and sections, the style of writing, some technical as well as some non-technical terms, many sentences word by word. None of these features we find in any other Arabic logical work. So, Al-manṭiq al-kab $ \bar{\iota} $ ι ¯ r and Sharḥ Asās al-kiyāsa are so close to each other that we might most possibly identify the authors of the books as the same scholar, i.e. Burhān al-dīn Nasafī. Many governments maintain lists of terrorist groups, imposing sanctions on designated organizations. However, the logic behind designation remains unclear. Furthermore, most studies focus on Western countries. This paper develops arguments for why attack attributes, group attributes, and policy diffusion might explain proscription. Empirically, we examine hundreds of militant organizations to see which are listed by the European Union, India, Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom, or the United States. Generally, designation does not seem to be driven by target or attack severity. It often results from diffusion: most countries follow the United States. The precise formal account of the contextuality of the quantum measurement provided by the Kochen-Specker theorem allows for a unique insight into the nature of the contextuality of theological language. The conceptual analysis carried out in this paper has demonstrated that despite of the methodological difficulties in juxtaposing theoretical physics and theology, legitimate bridges can be established between them whereby quantum contextuality may serve as a model of contextuality in theology. If we are to achieve climate change targets, transport systems need to transform. This article is concerned with the prospects of challenging the regime of automobility in urban areas. It employs a governmentality framework, alongside theories of automobility, in order to analyse mobility governmentalities in Gothenburg, Sweden. Gothenburg is an interesting case in the context of reducing car use given its identity as a 'car city.' Despite this, Gothenburg has high ambitions in terms of reducing car traffic. Reaching these goals are however associated with challenges: prognoses predict a continued increase in car traffic, and political acceptance is viewed as an obstacle. The article's findings are based on semi-structured interviews with public officials and stakeholders, zooming in on (1) conflicting spatialities and temporalities (2) competing logics of circulation and pace and (3) mobility imaginaries of the (im)possible. We argue that while there are new logics entering urban mobility governmentalities as an effect of the climate transition, their possibilities to affect material change are confined because the movement and circulation of 'people and things,' ultimately represented by the private car, are closely tied to the way that freedom is exercised, understood and manifested in contemporary liberal societies. In many European countries, regional planning is an established institutional framework. In recent years we have observed a resurgent research interest in regional planning with a specific focus on governance and institutional design and on the strategic and practical relevance of regional planning in pursuing sustainable development. However, in Sweden, regional planning traditionally has a weak position in practice as well as in research. Yet over the past 15 years, we have seen an increasing political interest in experimenting with different forms and formats of regional planning. In this paper, we explore the emerging logics of non-statutory regional planning, which the majority of Swedish regions have chosen. Drawing upon a qualitative research design we identify, compare and discuss three different logics and their inherent rationales, practices, challenges and prospects. Our analysis shows that our three case regions can do very little non-statutory regional planning unless they are part of properly working multi-level networks, and have well-established regional informal arenas for interaction and political backing. More specifically, we point at a number of tensions caused by the large degree of freedom to design non-statutory regional planning, which foster conflicts, confusion and insecurity. A standard approach to indeterminacy treats 'determinately' and 'indeterminately' as modal operators. Determinacy behaves like necessity; indeterminacy like contingency. This raises two questions. What is the appropriate modal system for these operators? And how should we interpret that system? Ken Akiba has developed an account of ontic indeterminacy that interprets possible worlds as worldly precisifications. He argues that this account vindicates S4 as the logic of indeterminacy. In this paper I explore one significant and surprising consequence of this view. I do this in two stages. First, I prove a technical result, which I call the Infinite Indeterminacy Theorem. Roughly put, this theorem states that, at any given precisification w, either every instance of indeterminacy admits of never-ending higher-order indeterminacy, or else there's indeterminacy in an infinite amount of distinct atomic formulas. In slogan form: either all indeterminacy is infinitely ascending or else there's infinitely wide indeterminacy. Second, I unpack the metaphysical consequences of this technical result (under its intended interpretation) and assess their plausibility. I conclude that these consequences commit Akiba's theory to highly contentious – and arguably untenable – views about the metaphysics of indeterminacy and related matters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knight's risk/uncertainty distinction is reviewed in its original context as a contribution to the theory of profit. Knight's approach to probability is paralleled by Ludwig von Mises, as emphasised by recent developments in strategic entrepreneurship theory. Von Mises distinguishes between class probability (i.e., risk) and case probability (i.e., uncertainty) in contrast to the frequentist approach of his brother, Richard von Mises. Keynes's contribution to probability and uncertainty is reviewed, focusing on his logical theory of probability in A Treatise on Probability which he more fully contextualised subsequently in the General Theory. Keynes's fragmentary later philosophical writings are reviewed to provide some insight into the contextual issues encountered. The key contributions of Knight and Keynes are summarised as signposts for 'The Road Less Travelled'. The possibilities of a Keynesian-Knightian synthesis as a way forward are considered by comparing these signposts. However, it is concluded that, although there is some common ground between Knight and Keynes, there are fundamental differences particularly associated with the definition of confidence that preclude any meaningful synthesis. This paper argues that the work of Erving Goffman can be profitably re-read with the aid of Juliane Vogel's work on the cultural logic of "the entrance" [der Auftritt]. Although Goffman's "dramaturgical sociology" makes use of several theatrical concepts for the analysis of face-to-face interaction in everyday life, "entrance" itself is not among them. The essay begins by demonstrating the significance of entrance for Goffman's thought. For Goffman, as for Vogel, answering the question, "Who's there?" is a necessary and pivotal moment in any face-to-face encounter. Then, it turns to the link between entrance and embarrassment, which has long been recognized as a critical concern for Goffman. Embarrassment proves to be the consequence of a "failed entrance" in Goffman's writing; its status as looming threat to any encounter, and the need for precautions to prevent it, suggest something about the fragility of social intercourse and a certain structural interminability of entrance. The final sections attempt to historicize Goffman's understanding of the human being as a performer compelled to enter into and out of conflicting and even contradictory roles, then explores theatrical antecedents of Goffman's social actor in two works from Shakespeare and Kleist. Avicenna's ground-breaking view of logic as both a tool for other sciences and a science in its own right has already attracted scholars' attention and has been studied in several different respects. The present paper aims to address a specific issue entailed by considering logic as a science in its own right: that is, assessing the relation in which logic as a science stands to the other sciences, and particularly to metaphysics and psychology. The inquiry will focus on a fundamental, yet tricky, passage of chapter I.4 of Avicenna's Kitāb al-Madḫal, the opening work of his most comprehensive philosophical summa, the Kitāb al-Šifāʾ (Book of Healing). Due to the obscurity of some of Avicenna's references, chapter I.4 "on the subject-matter of logic" has stimulated numerous attempts at interpretation from the Middle Ages to today. The nuclear proliferation of the DPRK poses an existential threat to the ROK and Northeast Asia. Analyzing this situation using the framework of the "Strategic Logic of Nuclear Proliferation," it becomes evident that the DPRK's interactions with China, ROK, and the US have facilitated its development. In this paper, we present a modality-free pre-rough algebra. Łukasiewicz Moisil algebra and Wajsberg algebra are equivalent under a transformation. A similar type of equivalence exists in our proposed definition and standard definition of pre-rough algebra. We obtain a few modality-free algebras weaker than pre-rough algebra. Furthermore, it is also established that modality-free versions for other analogous structures weaker than pre-rough algebra do not exist. High-speed, low-power digital circuits are essential in many digital applications. The objective of the paper is to design high-speed low-power multipliers with reversible gates. The realization of a multiplier with an efficient clocking system is also presented to reduce leakage power consumption. The existing reversible configurations do not possess an effective clocking system for reducing power in an idle state. In this work, a modified clock gating (MCG) and Enhanced Quasi-Static Energy Recovery Logic (EQSERL) are designed to generate a clock pulse. The EQSERL reduces the dynamic state in the circuit and it is designed with reduced complexity. This process effectively reduces leakage power consumption in the circuit. The conventional clock gating circuit is modified for connecting it with the EQSERL. This MCG circuit reduces unwanted power consumption. The conventional Wallace tree multiplier (WTM) involves full adder and half adder circuits. In this proposed work, a square root carry select adder (SQRT CSLA) with a reversible binary to excess-1 converter (BEC) and a ripple carry adder is presented. The reversible gates such as the Feynman gate, the Toffoli gate, and the dual key gate are employed. The counters that change their transition using a clock signal are called synchronous counters. While designing a synchronous counter circuit, the power consumption and the delay are the major issues. Several synchronous counters were designed previously with the help of flip flops, but they did not provide good results. The existing synchronous counters increased power consumption and delay and decreased the speed. To overcome these issues, in this manuscript, a reversible synchronous counter is designed utilizing Multiple-Controlled Toffoli (MCT) and Multiple-Controlled Fredkin (MCF) reversible logic gates. Here, three JK flip-flop designs, such as JK1, JK2, and JK3 are designed for a reversible synchronous counter. Then JK1 and JK2 are structured by MCT. Whereas the JK3 flip-flop design is designed under MCF reversible logic gates. Coding is carried out Verilog, and then the proposed Reversible synchronous counter design (RSCD) is synthesized and implemented on FPGA using a Xilinx ISE 14.5 System generator. Here, performance metrics, such as delay, power, maximum counting rate, and total equivalent gate counts are examined. The efficiency of the proposed RSCD-MCT-MCF design attains gate counts of 23.45%, 28.94%, and 29.04% and is compared to the existing designs, such as Effective Designing of Reversible Synchronous Counters in Nanoscale (SCD-MTG), effective designing for reversible sequential circuits (SCD-3TG-4FG), designing of synchronous decimal counter utilizing reversible Toffoli–FredkinNetlist (SCD-TOF2). Despite high college expectations and enrollments among young people, their trajectories through higher education have become increasingly complex. Even after initially starting as "traditional" students, many college graduates are only able to complete a bachelor's degree after a series of stops and starts across multiple institutions. While there is a growing body of research regarding nontraditional students, we know very little about how these individuals make sense of their trajectories. This qualitative study draws on interviews with 40 college graduates who attained a bachelor's degree following an extended and interrupted path. We consider how these individuals, who we define as post-traditional graduates, come to understand the value of college, distinguishing between the moral value, referred to as the expressive logic, and more practical and economic explanations, referred to as the instrumental logic. Our study found that an instrumental logic characterized the beginning of their college journeys, but what sustained our participants over time was an expressive logic: an evolved understanding of college as a process conferring personal development and moral worth. Justification of theorems plays a vital role in any rational human activity. It is indispensable in science. The deductive method of justifying theorems is used in all sciences and it is the only method of justifying theorems in deductive disciplines. It is based on the notion of proof, thus it is a method of proving theorems. In the Warsaw School of Logic (WSL) – the famous branch of the Lvov-Warsaw School (LWS) – two types of the method: axiomatic deduction method and natural deduction method were developed and practiced. In this paper, both of these methods are briefly discussed with an emphasis on their historical, groundbreaking significance for logic. The axiomatic method by means of rejection (proposed by Jan Łukasiewicz – a co-creator of the WSL), which is the method of the so-called rejection proof (rejection/refutation method) in logical systems and the proving method of generalized natural deduction, which is a hybrid deduction–refutation method of proving theorems, are also outlined in the paper. This paper also contains a brief mention of the most significant results which the application of the discussed methods introduced into contemporary scientific research, not only logical one. Łukasiewicz introduced a new methodological approach to the history of logic. It consists of the use of modern formal logic in the research of the history of logic. Although he was not the first to use formal logic in his historical research, Łukasiewicz was the first who used it consistently and formulated it as a requirement for a historian of logic. The aim of this paper is to present Łukasiewicz's contribution and the history of its formulation. In addition, the paper will present its reception. There are two main themes in Łukasiewicz's work on the history of logic. He discussed Stoic logic and Aristotle's syllogistic. The second part of the paper focuses on current reception of Łukasiewicz's contribution and on the question of whether there is a difference between knowledge about his contribution to Stoic logic and to Aristotle's syllogistic, given that it has been hypothesised that Łukasiewicz's contribution is currently more known among Aristotelian scholars than among those who focus on Stoic logic. The twentieth-century logical mainstream, derived from works by Łukasiewicz and Scholz, pictures the history of logic for the most part as the prehistory of Boolean–Fregean mathematical logic. Particularly, with respect to classical propositional calculus, the Stoic logic has been pictured as an early stage of it and Aristotle's or the Peripatetics' logic as a theory that assumes it. Although it was not emphasised, it follows that the ancient logics contain the principle of explosion. In the endmost quarter of the twentieth century, a competitive view began to spread to the effect that the ancient systems of logic were paraconsistent or relevantistic. In the twenty-first century, the latter view prevails and has every chance of becoming a new orthodoxy. It is claimed that although in Łukasiewicz's argument for the classicality of ancient logics, there are gaps, it may be demonstrated that the ancient logics contain the principle of explosion. We take into account two areas of the logical research of the Lvov-Warsaw School. First, we consider a new approach to research in the history of logic introduced and practiced by Łukasiewicz and some of his followers. In this style of doing history of logic, the knowledge of original philosophical and logical texts was combined with competence in modern logic. This method resulted in many important discoveries both in history and in logic and philosophy. At the same time, we pay attention to contemporary historical research devoted to the logic created by the School itself. In this context, we present an overview of the six papers included in the special issue 'Logic and its History in the Lvov-Warsaw School'. These papers were presented at an international symposium, 'History in/of the Lvov-Warsaw School', held in October 2022 in Warsaw, and they cover various aspects of historical-logical and logical achievements of the School. They concern topics from history of ancient logic, history of modern proof theory, and the issues of applying logic to philosophy and theology in the same way as the one implemented at the Lvov-Warsaw School. This conversation elaborates on the latest work of the Paris-based writer, philosopher, translator, mathematician and pianist Andrei Vieru, where he maintains that human freedom is inseparable from the idea of closure. Topics include patients refuse to remain in an emergency department (ED) for observation after overdose reversal with naloxone; and purported conflict between beneficence and autonomy maps poorly to this situation.

Digital technology is profoundly shaping the Chinese governance paradigm. This study presents a multilayered theoretical model comprising the "tool empowerment layer-organizational change layer-system upgrading layer" to elucidate the impacts and underlying logic of digital technology in reshaping this governance paradigm, showing that it is undergoing spiral advancement and incremental optimization. Central-local relations show a transition from "top-down decentralization" to "unified integration"; the intergovernmental structural paradigm shows a transition from "congruent responsibilities" to "integrated collaboration"; risk governance shows a transition from "reactive response" to "proactive prevention"; interface communication shows a transition from "vague delay" to "agile governance"; and finally, resource allocation shows a transition from "unidirectional allocation" to "bidirectional coupling." These transitions underscore three key logics: technological tool empowerment, organizational adaptive learning, and systemic evolution. Virtual reality (VR) is a technology that is seeing increasing use in medical education as a means to complement or prepare students for clinical practice in a safe space. Whilst effective for learning, it can be difficult to use effectively and requires significant planning to avoid the technological tail wagging the educational dog. We have run educational sessions using the technology to teach anatomy and clinical reasoning that have been well received by students at Queen Mary, University of London. Transdisciplinarity (TDS) is claimed to be a necessary condition to support the agroecological transition. Based on an analysis of the literature and a cross-reading of seven French transdisciplinary case-studies, we point out the tensions generated by real TDS activity, especially when combining the logic of actions from researchers and non-academic actors, and with the norms of TDS. Our results concern three dimensions: composition of the multi-actor groups, management of temporalities and adaptive nature of a TDS approach. Classical theories of reasoning equate System 1 with biases and System 2 with correct responses. Refined theories of reasoning propose the parallel model to explain the two systems. The first purpose of the present article is to give a contribution to the debate on the parallel and default-interventionfist models: we hypothesized when logic and belief conflict both logical validity and belief judgments will be affected with greater level of response errors and/or longer response times. The second purpose of this article is to assess the relationship between decisional styles and performance in deductive reasoning. Seventy-two participants participated in the experiment and completed 64 modus ponens and modus tollens syllogistic reasoning tasks. Accordingly, we found that belief and logic judgments were affected by the conflict condition, both in easy syllogisms (i.e., modus ponens) and in complex syllogisms (i.e., modus tollens). Findings showed also that participants with a rational decision-making style were more strongly influenced by logic than belief, whereas those with an intuitive decision-making style were more strongly influenced by belief than logic. This article analyzes the localization strategies of Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, positing India as a distinctive cultural-industrial contact zone. The Indian market's size, scale, and cultural and linguistic diversity make it a remarkable region for an epistemic inquiry into global industrial contact zones created by transnational streaming platforms. I map the relative power of Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar in relation to India's strong local film and entertainment industry. In doing so, I identify two types of localization strategies: the cosmopolitan local and the indigenized global. These strategies encompass content, aesthetics, audiences, and local industry dynamics. This essay explains the cultural and global mobility of media forms tied to cricket and Bollywood and argues that these forms accord the Indian mediascape a distinctive agency, presenting an antipodal inversion of imperialistic discourses of Western hegemonic media power. Dual modulus pre-scalers (DMPS) are programmable counters used in phase-locked loops (PLL). The dual modulus division capability improves the circuit functionality and can be used as a divider of N/N + 1 cycles, which can be controlled through a master input. This paper proposes power and area efficient divide-by-16/17 DMPS designs, which incorporate true single-phase clocking (TSPC) based D flip-flops, which consume less power with minimal area. Power reduction is achieved by integrating adaptive voltage level-source (AVLS) circuit to DMPS. The proposed-I divide-by-16/17 DMPS has been implemented by using TSPC based D flip-flops incorporating the AVLS technique. The proposed DMPS consumes 146.6 µW (34%) less power when compared to the reference architecture, in divide-by-16 mode. Further optimization of the pre-scaler design is done by using a minimum number of transistors, involving pushing the logic (AND) into the first stage of TSPC based D flip-flops which results in an area as well as power efficient design. The proposed-II circuit is realized by using optimized TSPC based D flip-flops, along with incorporation of the AVLS technique, resulting in a power efficient design. For instance, in divide-by-16 mode of operation, a 100 µW (21%) reduction in the total power is observed when a DMPS circuit is realized in CMOS 180 nm technology. Also, when the proposed DMPSs are realized in CMOS 45 nm technology, the same trend of power reduction is observed, which are analyzed at an operating frequency of 1 GHz. This paper reports a new speed-power efficient single-step design to hardware-encrypt-decrypt original-message in a binary format with a block-wise ternary-operator to achieve secured end-to-end-communication, hiding confidential information from third-party intervention. The scheme can be integrated as cryptographic hardware primitive cells with IoT/portable devices. The proposed T-Encryptor operates in a single step on a 4-bit binary input block at a time, to produce corresponding 3-trit encrypted ternary output. Encryption is done by taking 2's complement of the original binary message and converting it to ternary. Reverse steps are followed at the receiving end. A novel design that consists of 2:1-binary and 3:1 ternary multiplexer modules along with a clever pass-transistor input-switching network, implements the proposed T-Encryptor/Decryptor on conventional MOS. The Design and optimization of the proposed T-Encryptor/Decryptor are done on the BSIM4 device parameter using the 32nm-standard-CMOS Technology at 0.9 V supply-rail at 27°C. Bits "0" and "1" are denoted by 0 and 0.9 V, respectively, whereas ternary digits "0", "1" and "2" are denoted by 0, 0.45 and 0.9 V, respectively.
