Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common tumours worldwide, and 70% of CRC patients are over 65 years of age. However, the scientific evidence available for these patients is poor, as they are underrepresented in clinical trials. Therefore, a group of experts from the Oncogeriatrics Section of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), the Spanish Cooperative Group for the Treatment of Digestive Tumours, (TTD) and the Multidisciplinary Spanish Group of Digestive Cancer (GEMCAD) have reviewed the scientific evidence available in older patients with CRC. This group of experts recommends a multidisciplinary approach and geriatric assessment (GA) before making a therapeutic decision because GA predicts the risk of toxicity and survival and helps to individualize treatment. In addition, elderly patients with localized CRC should undergo standard cancer resection, preferably laparoscopically. The indication for adjuvant chemotherapy (CT) should be considered based on the potential benefit, the risk of recurrence, the life expectancy and patient comorbidities. When the disease is metastatic, the possibility of radical treatment with surgery, radiofrequency (RF) or stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) should be considered. The efficacy of palliative CT is similar to that seen in younger patients, but elderly patients are at increased risk of toxicity. Habitat loss is one of the most important threats to biodiversity; it alters the habitat connectivity of species and is among the main causes of the global amphibian extinction crisis. Identifying the potential areas of distribution and connectivity of species is of the utmost importance so that informed decisions can be made for the conservation of vulnerable amphibian populations. In this study, we performed species distribution models and used circuit theory to model omnidirectional connectivity for two plethodontid salamanders of conservation concern distributed in the forests of Chiapas, Mexico, and Guatemala (Bolitoglossa franklini and Bolitoglossa lincolni). Potential distribution maps show an affinity for well-preserved montane forests for both species. Likewise, we found that the niches of the species are not similar. The connectivity models show that the main areas of connectivity are in the Meseta Central de Chiapas, Sierra Madre de Chiapas, and the Cordillera Volcánica Guatemalense, in this last range, important areas of connectivity were located, as well as least-cost paths and barriers to the movement of both species. We identified that important areas of climatic suitability and connectivity are not within the protected natural areas and may be threatened by the increasing influence of anthropogenic activities. The results of our study show the importance of preserving the regional forests to ensure the persistence of species with arboreal habits and high sensitivity to habitat transformation, as well as to recognize and prioritize potential areas for management and protection in both southern Mexico and Guatemala. To infer changes in the photophysical properties of porphyrins due to complexation with albumin, a combination of Z-scan and conventional spectroscopic techniques was employed. We measured the characteristics of excited states of meso-tetrakis(sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin bound to bovine serum albumin and observed that the binding reduces the intersystem crossing quantum yield and increases the internal conversion one. A reverse saturable absorption process was observed in the nanosecond timescale. These results are important for prediction of the efficiency of this complex in medical and optical applications, because associating porphyrins to proteins enables better accumulation in tumors and improves its stability in optical devices, but at the same time, decreases its triplet quantum yield. Background: Qigong is an ancient form of health maintenance, dating back thousands of years, which is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Numerous physical as well as mental benefits have been classically ascribed to this traditional mind-body method which integrates slow body movements, breathing, and meditation. Albeit we have already reported an immunomodulatory action of qigong in other investigations, measures were then assessed 1 day after the qigong program ended. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to assess the acute effects of Taoist qigong practice on immune cell counts in healthy subjects 1 h after training. Method: Forty-three healthy subjects participated in the study of whom 25 were randomly allocated to the experimental group and 18 to the control group. The experimental subjects underwent daily qigong training for 1 month. Blood samples for the quantification of immune parameters (number and percentage of monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, total lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and natural killer (NK) cells) were taken the day before the experiment commenced and 1 h after the last session of the training program ended. As statistical analysis, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups, with the experimental group showing higher values in the number ( p = 0.006) and the percentage ( p = 0.04) of B lymphocytes, as well as lower values in the percentage of NK cells ( p = 0.05), as compared to control. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that Taoist qigong is able to exert acute immunomodulatory effects on components of both innate as well as adaptive immune response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we developed an experimental apparatus to directly measure transmittance and fluorescence in the stratum corneum (SC) ex vivo. The SC transmittance varied from ~6 to ~52 % in the wavelength range of 280-850 nm. For 260-300 nm excitation, the SC autofluorescence showed a strong emission band between 290 and 425 nm, which is associated with tryptophan, and another in the 600-670 nm range, which we attributed to a process involving resonance energy transfer to very hydrophobic keratin filaments. Weaker emission associated with less hydrophobic keratin filaments was also observed in the wavelength range of 350-480 nm. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) was incorporated into SC membranes, and its penetration was further increased by the addition of nerolidol to the treatment suspension. Both PpIX and the endogenous porphyrins showed fluorescence anisotropy consistent with their localization in SC membranes, and their molecular dynamics increased significantly in the presence of 1 % nerolidol. The emission and excitation spectra of PpIX and the endogenous SC porphyrins showed similar alterations during the photobleaching induced by 405-nm irradiation. This work also highlights the SC contribution to skin autofluorescence, which could be useful for fluorescence spectroscopy applications in the early diagnosis of skin diseases. Fruit tree orchards have a historical and economic importance for Mediterranean agriculture, notably in Spain. Fruit tree orchards have the potential to mitigate global warming by sequestrating carbon (C) and providing renewable fuels. Actually, there is few information on the benefits of organic practices. Therefore, we analyzed the greenhouse gas contribution of 42 pairs of organic and conventional perennial cropping systems, including citrus, subtropical trees, other fruit trees, treenuts, vineyards, and olives, using life-cycle assessment (LCA). The assessment was based on management information from interviews and involved the estimation of soil carbon sequestration, specific Mediterranean NO emission factors, and the consideration of coproducts. Results show on average a 56 % decrease of greenhouse gas emissions under organic versus conventional cropping, on an area basis. On a product basis, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 39 % on average. These findings are explained mainly by C sequestration in soils, which is due in turn to higher C inputs by cover cropping and incorporation of pruning residues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agriculture is a major driver of climate change, particularly when all indirect emission sources are accounted for. Mitigation options targeted on one process are often proposed, ignoring their secondary effects on the overall greenhouse gas balance. Integrative methodologies such as life cycle assessment (LCA) are often applied without adjusting emission factors to specific site characteristics. Here, we used LCA to calculate the global warming potential of 38 pairs of organic and conventional herbaceous cropping systems and products in Spain. Crop products included rainfed cereals and pulses, rice, open-air vegetables, and greenhouse vegetables. We used data from farmer interviews and published conversion factors. Our results show that the emission balances were dominated by fossil fuel use rather than by direct field emissions. Organic management reduced crop emissions by 36-65 %, with the exception of rice showing an increase of 8 % due to methane generation. Cochlear implantation through the standard posterior tympanotomy approach may sometimes be challenging. In cases with complicated anatomy or malformations, an alternative surgical technique may be chosen. The transattical approach is a simple technique based on a mastoidectomy and a transmeatal cochleostomy. The electrode is driven to the middle ear through the attic. This way it overcomes some of the standard technique's drawbacks. Our aim is to assess the value of this alternative approach in cochlear implant surgery. We conducted a comparative retrospective study; we included 74 patients operated by transattical approach and 59 patients operated with the standard technique. Auditory performance and complications at long term follow-up were compared. The consequences of the different trajectory of the electrode in the transattical approach were also studied. No significant differences were found between both groups regarding complication rates and cochlear implant performance. The electrode's integrity was not significantly affected by its different position and angles, when compared to the standard approach. We conclude that transattical approach is a safe technique for cochlear implantation. It may be considered as an alternative to the posterior tympanotomy approach for those cases where this cannot be performed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness, dosage, safety and comfort of intratympanic steroids as primary initial treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). Prospective nonrandomized clinical practice study was performed in Tertiary referral center university hospital. A total of 35 consecutive patients suffering from newly diagnosed sudden sensorineural hearing loss with mean pure-tone average thresholds of 81 ± 21 dB were treated. No previous therapy had been undertaken. Intratympanic steroid injection as primary initial treatment was administered during 2 weeks on a twice a week schedule, between 2010 and 2011. Treatment was started on average within 2 days of symptoms onset. Pre and post-treatment audiometric evaluations were analyzed on follow-up as well as tolerance of the procedure and possible adverse effects. 66-85 % of patients achieved successful treatment according to the different outcome criteria used to evaluate hearing improvement (Furuhashi criteria/improvement of ≥10 dB in pure-tone average). Mean post-treatment improvement regarding pure-tone average was 34 ± 21 dB. A 48 ± 43 % improvement in speech discrimination score was observed. Patients received an average of 18 mg of methylprednisolone per injection and a total dose of 72 mg per treatment cycle. No serious adverse effects were noted. Intratympanic steroid injection is an effective, safe and well-tolerated office based-procedure for the treatment of ISSHL as primary initial treatment that can avoid the potential adverse effects of systemic steroids. The aim of our study was to evaluate the use of a 1-molar gadolinium chelate (gadobutrol) as an alternative contrast medium for computed tomography angiography (CTA) exams of the aorta. CTA exams of the thoracic and/or abdominal aorta were performed on 15 patients with contraindications for the use of iodine who were not suitable for magnetic resonance examinations. The exams were performed with a 16-detector row scanner, injecting a mean dose of 0.37 mmol Gd/kg of body weight at a flow rate of 4 ml/s. Creatinine levels were obtained prior to the exam in patients with impaired renal function, and 24 and 48 h afterwards. The mean attenuation values obtained in the middle ascending and middle descending thoracic aorta were 202.3 and 216.8, respectively. The mean HU values of the abdominal aorta were 210.4 at the level of the renal arteries and 186.8 in the aortic bifurcation. All the exams were considered diagnostically adequate. No significant increase in serum creatinine was observed 24 and 48 h after the exam. We believe that gadobutrol could be an alternative contrast medium for CTA exams with 16-detector row scanners in patients with contraindications for iodinated contrast medium. There is a trend to consider the gene pool of the Basques as a ‘living fossil’ of the earliest modern humans that colonized Europe. To investigate this assumption, we have typed 45 binary markers and five short tandem repeat loci of the Y chromosome in a set of 168 male Basques. Results on these combined haplotypes were analyzed in the context of matching data belonging to approximately 3000 individuals from over 20 European, Near East and North African populations, which were compiled from the literature. Our results place the low Y-chromosome diversity of Basques within the European diversity landscape. This low diversity seems to be the result of a lower effective population size maintained through generations. At least some lineages of Y chromosome in modern Basques originated and have been evolving since pre-Neolithic times. However, the strong genetic drift experienced by the Basques does not allow us to consider Basques either the only or the best representatives of the ancestral European gene pool. Allele and genotype frequencies for 7 tetramerie short tandem repeat loci were determined in a Spanish population sample (N = 186-244) using PCR and subsequent analysis of the PCR products by denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by silver staining. The loci were HUMFES/FPS, HUMVWA, HUMTHOI, HUMF13B, HUMCSFIPO, HUMF13A1 and HUMTPOX and all loci met Hardy-Weinberg expectations. In addition, little evidence was found for association of alleles among the 7 loci. Thus the allele frequency data can be used in identity testing to estimate the frequency of a multiple PCR-based DNA profile in the Spanish population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present two equivalent representations of a 0–1 model for the Air Traffic Flow Management Problem. We show that the LP relaxation of the second representation is tighter than the LP relaxation of the first one. As a direct implication, the Branch-and-Cut effort can be reduced. A restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) characterized by the presence ( HinfI+) or absence ( HinfI-) of a HitinfI site has been found in the 5′ flanking region of the VNTR locus D 1 S80. RFLP-allele frequencies were determined from 82 unrelated individuals: HinfI+ = 0.49, HinfI- = 0.51. The RFLP/VNTR haplotype frequencies show an absolute association between the HinfI+ allele and the VNTR allele of 18 repeat units and an extreme association between the HinfI- allele and the VNTR allele of 24 repeat units. A bioaccumulation study in red (Palmaria palmata) and green (Ulva sp.) seaweed has been carried out after exposure to different concentrations of citrate-coated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (5 and 25 nm) for 28 days. The concentration of total titanium and the number and size of accumulated nanoparticles in the seaweeds has been determined throughout the study by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and single particle-ICP-MS (SP-ICP-MS), respectively. Ammonia was used as a reaction gas to minimize the effect of the interferences in the 48Ti determination by ICP-MS. Titanium concentrations measured in Ulva sp. were higher than those found in Palmaria palmata for the same exposure conditions. The maximum concentration of titanium (61.96 ± 15.49 μg g−1) was found in Ulva sp. after 28 days of exposure to 1.0 mg L−1 of 5 nm TiO2NPs. The concentration and sizes of TiO2NPs determined by SP-ICP-MS in alkaline seaweed extracts were similar for both seaweeds exposed to 5 and 25 nm TiO2NPs, which indicates that probably the element is accumulated in Ulva sp. mainly as ionic titanium or nanoparticles smaller than the limit of detection in size (27 nm). Calcium phosphate (CaP) is a kind of eco-friendly biodegradable material chemically similar to human hard tissue like bone and teeth and is highly biocompatible. CaPs have excellent biological quality, are cheap and easy to produce, are safe, and may be approved for clinical applications quite fast. CaP materials have proven themselves, yet their future is still bright. Today's major global public health issue is the prevalence of injury and illness brought on by bone fractures. There are a number of problems with the current treatments that call for research into better methods of dealing with bone disorders. Gene therapy has recently gained attention as a promising strategy for efficient bone repair and regeneration via the use of RNA interference (RNAi) systems to modulate gene expression in the bone microenvironment. CaP nanoparticles have been shown to be efficient transporters for biomolecules that cannot enter cells to exert their biological impacts, such as nucleic acids, proteins, peptides, antibodies, and medicines. Surface functionalization and incorporation of cargo molecules make these nanoparticles distinct from their solid counterparts. This protects against nucleases and allows for selective cellular targeting. In this overview, we looked at the fundamentals of nanoparticles of calcium phosphates, including their production techniques, physicochemical features, and applications in transfection, gene silencing, drug administration, the environment, electricity, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and biomedicine. This study is predicted to be extremely valuable and advantageous to the researcher in the future progress of the research work in therapeutic applications since it comprises very comprehensive thoughts about calcium phosphate nanoparticles. Calcium phosphate is known to be a "super material" with improved biological qualities such as bioactivity, biodegradability, cellular function, and osteoconduction. The synthesis and fabrication of calcium phosphate by different crucial techniques in enhancing the physical and chemical properties allow it to be potential in various bioengineering fields such as drug delivery, bone regeneration, gene silencing, and electrical as well as environmental applications. Early Modern Spanish literature, also known as Golden Age Spanish literature, is a well-established period in the History of Spanish literary tradition, covering from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the seventeenth century, from Renaissance to Baroque works. In the case of poetry, the stylistic change from one aesthetic to the other has been examined from a historical point of view, with some scholars considering a transitional group of poets between both stylistic movements, and many pointing to the writer Fernando de Herrera (1534–1597) as a bridge between the Renaissance style of Garcilaso de la Vega (1501–1536) and the Baroque of Luis de Góngora (1561–1627). This paper examines the stylistic change from Renaissance to Baroque in Spanish poetry and Herrera's place on it from a quantitative, computational point of view, applying a methodology which combines Stylometry and Network Analysis to a big corpus of poems and authors writing in this period. The resulting stylometric network for Renaissance and Baroque poetry proves there is a computationally measurable chronological evolution in the texts of this period, as well as a change of style from Renaissance to Baroque, and supports the existence of a transitional group of poets between these two literary movements, one of which is Fernando de Herrera. The multiple myeloma (MM) landscape has changed in the last few years, but most patients eventually relapse because current treatment modalities do not target clonogenic stem cells, which are drug-resistant and can self-renew. We hypothesized that side population (SP) cells represent myeloma clonogenic stem cells and, searching for new treatment strategies, analyzed the anti-myeloma activity of natural killer (NK) cells against clonogenic cells. Activated and expanded NK cells (NKAE) products were obtained by co-culturing NK cells from MM patients with K562-mb15-41BBL cell line and characterized by flow cytometry. Functional experiments against MM cells were performed by Eu-TDA release assays and methylcellulose clonogenic assays. Side population was detected by Dye Cycle Violet labeling and then characterized by flow cytometry and RNA-Seq. Self-renewal capacity was tested by clonogenic assays. Sorting of both kind of cells was performed for time-lapse microscopy experiments. SP cells exhibited self-renewal potential and overexpressed genes involved in stem cell metabolism. NK cells from MM patients exhibited dysregulation and had lower anti-tumor potential against clonogenic cells than healthy donors' NK cells. Patients' NK cells were activated and expanded. These cells recovered cytotoxic activity and could specifically destroy clonogenic myeloma cells. They also had a highly cytotoxic phenotype expressing NKG2D receptor. Blocking NKG2D receptor decreased NK cell activity against clonogenic myeloma cells, and activated NK cells were able to destroy SP cells, which expressed NKG2D ligands. Intensive use of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings entails monitoring their efficiency. Moreover, cooling systems are key facilities in large buildings and can account up to 44% of the energy consumption. Therefore, monitoring efficiency in chillers is crucial and, for that reason, a sensor to measure the cooling production is required. However, manufacturers rarely install it in the chiller due to its cost. In this paper, we propose a methodology to build a soft sensor that provides an estimation of cooling production and enables monitoring the chiller efficiency. The proposed soft sensor uses independent variables (internal states of the chiller and electric power) and can take advantage of current or past observations of those independent variables. Six methods (from linear approaches to deep learning ones) are proposed to develop the model for the soft sensor, capturing relevant features on the structure of data (involving time, thermodynamic and electric variables and the number of refrigeration circuits). Our approach has been tested on two different chillers (large water-cooled and smaller air-cooled chillers) installed at the Hospital of León. The methods to implement the soft sensor are assessed according to three metrics (MAE, MAPE and R 2 ). In addition to the comparison of methods, the results also include the estimation of cooling production (and the comparison of the true and estimated values) and monitoring the COP indicator for a period of several days and for both chillers. Purpose: To analyze the current management and use of fertility preservation (FP) treatments among different gynecologic oncology centers in Spain METHODS: From March to April 2019, a transversal study was conducted using a national online survey to consultants registered in the section of Gynecologic Oncology of the Spanish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The survey contained 30 questions that assessed the perceptions and attitudes towards fertility-sparing strategies as well as its management in each participating center.Results: A total of 51 responders from 12 out of 17 geographical regions of Spain answered the survey. According to 35 responders (68.63%), the age limit for offering FP was 40 years. In most of the centers, an ovarian reserve study is carried out prior to a FP procedure (34 responders, 66.67%). In cervical cancer size, limit for offering trachelectomy is 2 cm (40 responders, 78.43%), with LVSI as an exclusion factor for 26 (51%). Twenty-four (48.98%) responders reported that FP only in ovarian cancer stages IA, 12 (24.49%) also in stages IB, and an additional 13 (26.53%) up to stages IC. Most responders perform FP only in the absence of myometrial infiltration (30, 58.82%) in patients with g1-g2 endometrial cancer.Conclusions: The performance of professionals at the national level is uneven, demonstrating the need for referral centers to ensure optimal management. International guidelines should be more widely extended throughout Spain to homogenize the treatment of young oncology patients who wish to have children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, a new mathematical proposal is presented to perform digital multispectral images processing of four primary colors; namely, it shows the method and equations that transform the four-band color space (extension of RGB) into the space of color HSI4 (HSI color model that depends on four primary colors) and vice versa. The HSI model is widely used to develop image processing algorithms based on human perception of color. At present, there are capture and visualization devices based on four primary colors that is why the information contained in this document will be a valuable mathematical tool in the processing of images in the HSI space. The work is divided into two main parts: direct converting, which is based on an already developed article and what is presented here is an application of this one for the case of four primary colors. The second part, inverse converting, is the most important and new contribution. The effectiveness of the mathematical proposal can be verified with the numerical results presented. This review presents the state-of-the-art in the forensic application of genetic methods driven by the research in population transcriptomics. In the first part of the review, the constraints of using classical genomic markers are shortly reviewed. In the second part, the developments in the field of inter-population diversity at the transcriptomic level are presented. Subsequently, a potential of population-specific transcriptomic markers in forensic science applications, including ascertaining population affiliation of human samples and cell mixtures separation, are presented. Consumer search is not only costly but also tiring. We characterize the intertemporal effects that search fatigue has on monopoly and oligopoly prices, the product lines offered by firms, and the provision of consumer assistance (i.e., advice). These effects vary based on the type of search that occurs among stores and within them. In contrast to standard search models, accounting for fatigue leads to product proliferation and time-varying prices, cyclical price dispersion, and consumer assistance. We analyze the welfare implications of search fatigue and discuss the conditions under which product proliferation and cyclical price dispersion are most pronounced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The processing of digital sound signals often requires the computation of the QR factorization of a rectangular system matrix. However, sometimes, only a given (and probably small) part of the system matrix varies from the current sample to the next one. We exploit this fact to reuse some computations carried out to process the former sample in order to save execution time in the processing of the current sample. These savings can be critical for real-time applications running on low power consumption devices with high mobility. In addition, we propose a simple out-of-order task-parallel algorithm for the QR factorization using OpenMP that exploits the multicore capability of modern processors. Furthermore, in the presence of a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in the system, our algorithm is able to off-load some tasks to the GPU to accelerate the computation on these hardware devices. Purpose: To determine clinical predictors associated with corticosteroid administration and its association with ICU mortality in critically ill patients with severe influenza pneumonia.Methods: Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of critically ill patients with confirmed influenza pneumonia admitted to 148 ICUs in Spain between June 2009 and April 2014. Patients who received corticosteroid treatment for causes other than viral pneumonia (e.g., refractory septic shock and asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] exacerbation) were excluded. Patients with corticosteroid therapy were compared with those without corticosteroid therapy. We use a propensity score (PS) matching analysis to reduce confounding factors. The primary outcome was ICU mortality. Cox proportional hazards and competing risks analysis was performed to assess the impact of corticosteroids on ICU mortality.Results: A total of 1846 patients with primary influenza pneumonia were enrolled. Corticosteroids were administered in 604 (32.7%) patients, with methylprednisolone the most frequently used corticosteroid (578/604 [95.7%]). The median daily dose was equivalent to 80 mg of methylprednisolone (IQR 60-120) for a median duration of 7 days (IQR 5-10). Asthma, COPD, hematological disease, and the need for mechanical ventilation were independently associated with corticosteroid use. Crude ICU mortality was higher in patients who received corticosteroids (27.5%) than in patients who did not receive corticosteroids (18.8%, p < 0.001). After PS matching, corticosteroid use was associated with ICU mortality in the Cox (HR = 1.32 [95% CI 1.08-1.60], p < 0.006) and competing risks analysis (SHR = 1.37 [95% CI 1.12-1.68], p = 0.001).Conclusion: Administration of corticosteroids in patients with severe influenza pneumonia is associated with increased ICU mortality, and these agents should not be used as co-adjuvant therapy. Purpose: Anthracyclines are widely used chemotherapeutic drugs that can cause progressive and irreversible cardiac damage and fatal heart failure. Several genetic variants associated with anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC) have been identified, but they explain only a small proportion of the interindividual differences in AIC susceptibility.Methods: In this study, we evaluated the association of low-frequency variants with risk of chronic AIC using the Illumina HumanExome BeadChip array in a discovery cohort of 61 anthracycline-treated breast cancer patients with replication in a second independent cohort of 83 anthracycline-treated pediatric cancer patients, using gene-based tests (SKAT-O).Results: The most significant associated gene in the discovery cohort was ETFB (electron transfer flavoprotein beta subunit) involved in mitochondrial β-oxidation and ATP production (P = 4.16 × 10−4) and this association was replicated in an independent set of anthracycline-treated cancer patients (P = 2.81 × 10−3). Within ETFB, we found that the missense variant rs79338777 (p.Pro52Leu; c.155C > T) made the greatest contribution to the observed gene association and it was associated with increased risk of chronic AIC in the two cohorts separately and when combined (OR 9.00, P = 1.95 × 10−4, 95% CI 2.83–28.6).Conclusions: We identified and replicated a novel gene, ETFB, strongly associated with chronic AIC independently of age at tumor onset and related to anthracycline-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction. Although experimental verification and further studies in larger patient cohorts are required to confirm our finding, we demonstrated that exome array data analysis represents a valuable strategy to identify novel genes contributing to the susceptibility to chronic AIC. Optimal sensor placement problems are considered for a thermoelastic solid body. The main motivation is the real-time capable prediction of the displacement of the tool center point (TCP) in a machine tool by temperature measurements. A reduced order model based on proper orthogonal decomposition is used to describe the temperature field. The quality of the TCP displacement estimation is measured in terms of the associated covariance matrix. This study analyzes the beliefs about science-technology-society, and other Nature of Science (NOS) themes, of a large sample (613) of Spanish pre- and in-service secondary education teachers through their responses to 30 items of the Questionnaire of Opinions on Science, Technology and Society. The data were processed by means of a multiple response model to generate the belief indices used as the bases for subsequent quantitative and qualitative analyses. Other studies have reported a negative profile of teachers' understanding in this area, but the diagnosis emerging from the present work is more complex. There was a mix of appropriate beliefs coexisting with others that are inappropriate on the topics analyzed. The overall assessment, however, is negative since clearly teachers need to have a better understanding of these questions. There were scant differences between the pre- and in-service teachers, and hence no decisive evidence that the practice of teaching contributes to improving the in-service teachers' understanding. These results suggest there is an urgent need to bring the initial and continuing education of science teachers up to date to improve their understanding of these topics of science curricula, and thus improve the teaching of science. This paper describes Spanish science teachers' thinking about issues concerning the nature of science (NOS) and the relationships connecting science, technology, and society (STS). The sample consisted of 774 in-service and pre-service teachers. The participants responded to a selection of items from the Questionnaire of Opinions on Science, Technology & Society in a multiple response model. These data were processed to generate the invariant indices that are used as the bases for subsequent quantitative and qualitative analyses. The overall results reflect moderately informed conceptions, and a detailed analysis by items, categories, and positions reveals a range of positive and negative conceptions about the topics of NOS dealt with in the questionnaire items. Purpose: To determine whether macrolide-based treatment is associated with mortality in critically ill H1N1 patients with primary viral pneumonia. Methods: Secondary analysis of a prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted across 148 Intensive Care Units (ICU) in Spain. Results: Primary viral pneumonia was present in 733 ICU patients with pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus infection with severe respiratory failure. Macrolide-based treatment was administered to 190 (25.9 %) patients. Patients who received macrolides had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease more often, lower severity on admission (APACHE II score on ICU admission (13.1 ± 6.8 vs. 14.4 ± 7.4 points, p < 0.05), and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome less often (23.4 vs. 30.1 %, p < 0.05). Length of ICU stay in survivors was not significantly different in patients who received macrolides compared to patients who did not (10 (IQR 4-20) vs. 10 (IQR 5-20), p = 0.9). ICU mortality was 24.1 % ( n = 177). Patients with macrolide-based treatment had lower ICU mortality in the univariate analysis (19.2 vs. 28.1 %, p = 0.02); however, a propensity score analysis showed no effect of macrolide-based treatment on ICU mortality (OR = 0.87; 95 % CI 0.55-1.37, p = 0.5). Moreover, the sensitivity analysis revealed very similar results (OR = 0.91; 95 % CI 0.58-1.44, p = 0.7). A separate analysis of patients under mechanical ventilation yielded similar results (OR = 0.77; 95 % CI 0.44-1.35, p = 0.4). Background: Current medical knowledge lacks specific information regarding creatine kinase (CK) elevation in influenza A pH1N1 (2009) infection. Objectives: Primary endpoints were correlation between CK at intensive care unit (ICU) admission and ICU mortality. Secondary endpoints were ICU length of stay (LOS), mechanical ventilation (MV), and requirement of renal replacement techniques (RRT). Materials and methods: A prospective multicenter register included all adults admitted for severe acute respiratory insufficiency (SARI) with confirmed pH1N1 in 148 ICUs. Clinical data including demographics, comorbidities, laboratory information, organ involvement, and prognostic data were registered. Post hoc classification of subjects was determined according to CK level. Data are expressed as median (interquartile range). Results: Five hundred and five (505) patients were evaluable. Global ICU mortality was 17.8 % without documented differences between breakpoints. CK ≥500 UI/L was documented in 23.8 % of ICU admissions, being associated with greater renal dysfunction: acute kidney injury (AKI) was more frequent (26.1 versus 17.1 %, p < 0.05) and twofold requirement of RRT [11 versus 5.6 %, p < 0.05; odds ratio (OR) = 2.09 (95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.01-4.32)]. Increase of CK ≥1,000 UI/L was associated with two or more quadrant involvement on chest X-ray (63.2 versus 40.2 %, p < 0.01) and increased intubation risk (73.9 versus 56.7 %, p = 0.07) and duration of mechanical ventilation (median 15 days versus 11 days, p < 0.01). As a result, CK ≥1,000 UI/L was associated with 5 extra days of ICU and hospital LOS. Conclusions: CK is a biomarker of severity in pH1N1 infection. Tecia solanivora (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is an invasive species that attacks the tubers of the potato Solanum tuberosum. It is considered a serious pest of potato crops and stocks in all countries where it occurs. In the present study, we sequenced 541 individuals sampled across the T. solanivora distribution range, using the mitochondrial DNA marker Cytochrome b (Cytb) to delimit the area of species origin. We also analyzed the genetic structure of T. solanivora in its putative area of origin and described differences in haplotype diversity between samples from different geographic origins affected by the invasion. We observed a gap in the level of genetic diversity between Guatemalan samples ( h between 0.77 and 0.97) and those from Costa-Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and the Canary Islands ( h between 0 and 0.56). The number of haplotypes has decreased over the colonization process, ending with the observation of a single haplotype in Colombia, Ecuador and the Canary Islands. Consequently, the invasion of South American countries by T. solanivora is likely to have had a front-like step-wise progression, where the most recently invaded country becomes the source of subsequent invasion.
