Background noise due to nonspecific binding of biomolecules on the assay substrates is one of the most common challenges that limits the sensitivity of microarray-based immunoassays. Background signal intensity usually increases when complex biological fluids are used because they have a combination of molecules and vesicles that can adsorb onto substrate surfaces. Blocking strategies coupled with surface chemistries can reduce such nonspecific binding and improve assay sensitivity. In this paper, we conducted a systematic optimization of blocking strategies on a variety of commonly used substrates for protein measurement in complex biofluids. Four blocking strategies (BSA, non-fat milk, PEG, and a protein-free solution) coupled with four surface chemistries (3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPS), poly-L-lysine (PLL), aminoalkylsilane (AAS), and nitrocellulose (NC)) were studied for their effect on background, microspot, and net signal intensities. We have also explored the effect that these blocking strategies have when proteins in complex samples (plasma, serum, cell culture media, and EV lysate) are measured. Irregular spot morphology could affect signal extraction using automated software. We found that the microspots with the best morphology were the ones printed on GPS glass surfaces for all immunoassays. On NC membrane, the protein-based blocking strategies yielded the highest net fluorescent intensity with the antigen contained in PBS, plasma, serum, and serum-free cell culture media. Differently, with EV lysate samples, Pierce™ protein-free blocker yielded the best net signal intensity on both GPS and NC surfaces. The choice of blocking strategies highly depends on the substrate. This study performs a chemical investigation of blood plasma samples from patients with and without fibromyalgia, combined with some of the symptoms and their levels of intensity used in the diagnosis of this disease. The symptoms evaluated were: visual analogue pain scale (VAS); fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ); Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAM); Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TAMPA); quality of life Questionnaire—physical and mental health (QL); and Pain Catastrophizing Scale (CAT). Plasma samples were analyzed by paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (PSI-MS). Spectral data were organized into datasets and related to each of the symptoms measured. The datasets were submitted to multivariate classification using supervised models such as principal component analysis with linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA), successive projections algorithm with linear discriminant analysis (SPA-LDA), genetic algorithm with linear discriminant analysis (GA-LDA) and their versions with quadratic discriminant analysis (PCA/SPA/GA-QDA) and support vector machines (PCA/SPA/GA-SVM). These algorithm combinations were performed aiming the best class separation. Good discrimination between the controls and fibromyalgia samples were observed using PCA-LDA, where the spectral data associated with the CAT symptom achieved 100% classification sensitivity, and associated with the VAS symptom achieved 100% classification specificity, with both symptoms at the moderate level of intensity. The spectral variable at 579 m/z was found to be substantially significant for classification according to the PCA loadings. According to the human metabolites database, this variable can be associated with a LysoPC compound, which comprises a class of metabolites already evidenced in other studies for fibromyalgia diagnosis. This study proposed an investigation of spectral data combined with clinical data to compare the classification ability of different datasets. The good classification results obtained confirm this technique is as a good analytical tool for the detection of fibromyalgia, and provides theoretical support for other studies about fibromyalgia diagnosis. The Journal of Materials Science awards the annual Robert W. Cahn Prize to recognize the best paper published in the journal each year. The winner of the 2023 Cahn Prize is a research paper titled "Molecular modelling of graphene nanoribbons on the effect of porosity and oxidation on the mechanical and thermal properties." Fiber length and fiber-to-fiber bonding effects on tensile strength and fracture toughness of kraft paper have experimentally been investigated. Laboratory sheets were made from kraft pulp, each with a distinct set of fiber lengths. Additionally, the fiber-fiber bond strength was improved by carboxymethyl (CMC) grafting. The tensile strength and work of fracture toughness results were compared to predictions from a shear-lag model which considers the fiber-fiber bond shear strength, the fiber tensile strength and fiber pull-out work. The tensile strength and fracture work for papers with weak fiber-fiber bonds increased with fiber length consistent with the shear-lag model. CMC-treated fibers provided strong fiber-fiber bonds. Papers made from such fibers displayed high strength and work of fracture independent of fiber length which indicates that the failure process is governed by fiber failures rather than bond failures. The fracture toughness, expressed as the critical value of the J-integral, increased strongly with fiber length for both untreated and CMC-treated papers. This paper explores the potential for a system to be a co-author on an academic paper based on the criteria proposed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). We used a third generation generative pretrained transformer (GPT-3) to write a review paper on the topic of its choice: The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Cognitive Function. The system was asked to fulfill the four main criteria for co-authorship as recommended by ICMJE, which includes contributions to the conception or design of the work; drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; final approval of the version to be published; and agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work. Our results showed that the system was able to fulfill the criteria, with significant difficulties with accurate and reliable referencing. We also explored the ethical implications of using AI systems for research and found that it is important to take a cautious approach when considering its use for scientific authorship. In this work, a techno-economic assessment of carbon dioxide capture from limekiln flue gas of a pulp and paper mill (Mill A) and a linerboard mill (Mill B) using a Monoethanolamine (MEA) absorption desorption process was carried out. We coupled the ASPEN Plus simulator with a derivative-free optimization (DFO) tool to identify the optimal configuration for minimizing the total capture cost. The capture costs were calculated using CAPCOST, a modular program for equipment cost estimation, and appropriate coefficients. Eight degrees of freedom, the direct contact cooler stages, the absorber stages, the stripper stages, the solvent lean loading, the solvent weight concentration, the stripper inlet temperature, the flue gas inlet temperature, and the amount of CO2 captured, were selected for process and flowsheet optimization. Additionally, we evaluated the effect of steam integration and Sect. 45Q of the existing federal tax credit for carbon capture and sequestration on CO2 capture costs. The total capture costs per tonne of CO2 were $64.9 for Mill A and $69.7 for Mill B. When steam integration and Sect. 45Q are considered, the costs dropped to − $2.5 and $2.6 for Mill A and Mill B, respectively. The sensitivity of CO2 capture cost to changes in the inlet flue gas flowrate, flue gas CO2 mol%, and the electricity and MEA prices were investigated. The change of mechanical (folding endurance index, breaking stress, breaking length, breaking index, tear index ), optical (brightness), chemical (cold extract pH, alkali reserve) and physical (water absorbency by surface, smoothness) characteristics of 5 paper samples were measured during the accelerated aging at 105 ± 2°C, and the measured exponential dependencies were described and fitted by the formal first-order kinetics. The statistic parameters of such fitting calculations evidenced good agreement of the experimental and calculated data. The relative decrease of each paper property corresponding to 48 days of accelerated aging was evaluated in order to compare the durability of paper samples. Paper has been widely employed as cheap material for the development of a great number of sensors such as pregnancy tests, strips to measure blood sugar, and COVID-19 rapid tests. The need for new low-cost analytical devices is growing, and consequently the use of these platforms will be extended to different assays, both for the final consumer and within laboratories. This work describes a paper-based electrochemical sensing platform that uses a paper disc conveniently modified with recognition molecules and a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to achieve the detection of gluten in a deep eutectic solvent (DES). This is the first method coupling a paper biosensor based on aptamers and antibodies with the DES ethaline. Ethaline proved to be an excellent extraction medium allowing the determination of very low gluten concentrations. The biosensor is appropriate for the determination of gluten with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 mg L−1 of sample; it can detect gluten extracted in DES with a dynamic range between 0.2 and 20 mg L−1 and an intra-assay coefficient of 10.69%. This approach can be of great interest for highly gluten-sensitive people, who suffer from ingestion of gluten quantities well below the legal limit, which is 20 parts per million in foods labeled gluten-free and for which highly sensitive devices are essential. This paper proposes a digital morphological filtering method based on a novel structuring element (SE) formulated using fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) and cross-convolution of window functions. The highlighting feature of this newly formulated filter is its flexibility in adding an adaptive nature to classical morphological filtering. Until now, every method listed in the literature makes a convenient assumption that noises corrupting ECG signal are Gaussian and model the filter around this assumption. Addressing this shortcoming, the first-of-its-kind filter adopts the α -stable distribution model (of which Gaussian distribution is a special case) of noise to better replicate the real-time noises interfering with ECG signals. The designed filter can suppress the noise and adapt to the changes in ECG signal morphology for better reconstruction. The proposed filter is tested on MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. The simulation results show improved performance in several quantitative metrics, demonstrating the superiority of our suggested method over the currently used state-of-the-art techniques. Historical paper documents are susceptible to complex degradation processes, including biodeterioration, which can progressively compromise their aesthetic and structural integrity. This study analyses seventeenth century handwritten historical letters stored at the Correr Museum Library in Venice, Italy, exhibiting pronounced signs of biodeterioration. The techniques used encompassed traditional colony isolation on agar plates and proteomics analyses, employing nanoscale liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (nano-LC–MS). Fluorescence microscopy was used for the first time in the historical paper biodeterioration context to supplement the conventional stereoscopic, optical, and scanning electron microscopic imaging techniques. This method enables the visualisation of microorganisms beyond and beneath the paper's surface through their natural intrinsic autofluorescence in a non-invasive and non-destructive way. The results demonstrate a diverse, complex, and abundant microbiota composed of coexisting fungal and bacterial species (Ascomycota, Mucoromycota, Basidiomycota, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria), along with mite carcasses, insects, parasites, and possibly protists. Furthermore, this study reveals certain species that were not previously documented in the biodeterioration of historical paper, including human pathogens, such as Histoplasma capsulatum, Brucella, Candida albicans, and species of Aspergillus (A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. oryzae, A. terreus, A. niger) known to cause infections or produce mycotoxins, posing substantial risk to both artefacts and humans. Mushroom cultivation is an economically feasible bio-technological process for conversion of various lignocellulosic wastes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of waste paper supplemented with corn stalk and wheat bran for oyster mushroom cultivation. Pure culture of Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.: Fr.) Kummer) was purchased from YB Plant Micropropagation Plc; Mekelle, Ethiopia. Then, the pure culture was used as inoculum for spawn preparation using sorghum prepared in Microbiology laboratory, Department of Biology, Aksum University. Waste paper supplemented with corn stalk and wheat bran with 0%, 25% and 50% were prepared. The substrates were mixed with the spawn that has been inoculated with pure culture of oyster mushroom aseptically for their productivity and biological efficiency (BE) for cultivation of P. ostreatus mushroom. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. Higher (26.20 ± 19.36) mean weight, pileus diameter (7.90 ± 2.66 cm), total yield (646.4 ± 273.1 g) and BE (64.64 ± 273%) were obtained from waste paper (50%) supplemented with cornstalk (25%) and wheat bran (25%). And lower (17.92 ± 81.95%) BE were obtained from waste paper (100%). Moreover, the highest (3.88 ± 0.32 cm) mean stalk length was obtained from waste paper (50%) supplemented with corn stalk (50%). This study revealed that waste paper supplemented with corn stalk and wheat bran resulted in high BE and total yield. It remains a challenge to prepare special engineering paper with excellent mechanical properties, high temperature resistance and chemical resistance. The emergence of high-performance fiber provides support for the technical progress of special engineering paper. Herein, a novel method to obtain a novel self-reinforced poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composite paper (SR-DI-PEEK/paper) by vacuum filtration, impregnation and hot pressing. Specially, PEEK fibers were used as the skeleton fiber and a small amount of aramid pulp was added as the decanted fiber. By optimizing the process of SR-DI-PEEK/paper preparation, the best mechanical properties of SR-DI-PEEK/paper was presented. Compared with the composite paper prepared with Phenolic solution (PF-PEEK/paper) and Polyimide solution (PI-PEEK/paper), the mechanical properties of SR-DI-PEEK/paper was significantly improved. In particular, when the concentration of impregnation was 3 wt%, the tensile index of SR-DI-PEEK/paper reached 51.10 N m g−1 (tensile strength 47.16 kN m−1), which is 16.48 times than that of the un-impregnated PEEK/paper (2.86 kN m−1). SR-DI-PEEK/paper also exhibited excellent chemical resistance among acid, alkali, and polar solvents, while the tensile index maintained 96.3% after 40 wt% H2SO4 treatment. A rapid method for analyzing lignin in paper using IR reflectance spectra from its surface was developed. IR absorption and reflectance spectra of model paper samples prepared from cellulose fibers obtained from deciduous and coniferous woods with various lignin contents were analyzed. The intensity of the lignin absorption band at 1510 cm after Kubelka-Munk transformation of the paper reflectance spectra and chemical data on the fiber lignin content were well correlated. The analytical relationship between the lignin content in the paper fibers and the intensity of the lignin absorption band was used to estimate the lignin concentration in samples of Russian stamping paper from the 19th century using their IR reflectance spectra. The cellulose structure parameter estimated from the paper reflectance spectra showed that sheets containing lignin (5-16%) consisted entirely of wood fibers and were supplemented with kaolin. The photon energy of terahertz waves is of the order of a few milli-electronvolts and is much lower than the thermal energy of ~ 26 meV at room temperature. However, the fast and sensitive detection of terahertz waves is notoriously difficult at ambient conditions. Moreover, the material flexibility is also very important within existing terahertz technologies for development of wearable and portable terahertz devices. We experimentally demonstrate that multiwall carbon nanotube flexible paper (MWCNT-FP) is one of the potential candidates to be used for terahertz detectors at room temperature. For the first time, MWCNT-FP sample is measured over a wide frequency band ranging from 0.02 to 4.5 THz at room temperature as compared to previously reported materials that demonstrate prominent frequency response between 0.2 and 2.5 THz. The MWCNT-FP sample delivered wide band absorption between 0.02 and 4.0 THz. Over the transmission, a high absorption peak is detected at 1.0 THz. The optical density spectrum is observed around 1.25 and 3.37 THz in the low-frequency regime and high-frequency regime, respectively. Disposable nonenzymatic glucose sensors are constructed by electrodepositing NiPt nanosheet arrays on carbon papers. The obtained NiPt nanosheet arrays are fully examined by various techniques including SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS. The glucose sensing performance of the optimal NiPt-3 nanosheet electrode is studied using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques in alkaline electrolyte (0.1 M NaOH). Compared with the counterpart of Ni electrode, the NiPt-3 nanosheet electrode shows highly improved nonenzymatic glucose sensing performance. The sensors achieve a wider linear detection range between 1 μM-10.8 mM with high sensitivity of 2225.5 μA·mM−1·cm−2. The detection limit at 0.55 V is estimated to be 0.4 μM (S/N = 3). The improved glucose sensing performance of NiPt-3 nanosheets may be due to the sheet-like structure and the incorporation of Pt into the NiPt alloy nanosheets. In addition, the high selectivity and preferable feasibility for serum sample analysis demonstrate that the NiPt-3 nanosheet may be a promising disposable electrode for nonenzymatic glucose sensing measurements. The development of fully solution-processed, biodegradable piezoelectrics is a critical step in the development of green electronics towards the worldwide reduction of harmful electronic waste. However, recent printing processes for piezoelectrics are hindered by the high sintering temperatures required for conventional perovskite fabrication techniques. Thus, a process was developed to manufacture lead-free printed piezoelectric devices at low temperatures to enable integration with eco-friendly substrates and electrodes. A printable ink was developed for screen printing potassium niobate (KNbO3) piezoelectric layers in microns of thickness at a maximum processing temperature of 120 °C with high reproducibility. Characteristic parallel plate capacitor and cantilever devices were designed and manufactured to assess the quality of this ink and evaluate its physical, dielectric, and piezoelectric characteristics; including a comparison of behaviour between conventional silicon and biodegradable paper substrates. The printed layers were 10.7–11.2 μm thick, with acceptable surface roughness values in the range of 0.4–1.1 μm. The relative permittivity of the piezoelectric layer was 29.3. The poling parameters were optimised for the piezoelectric response, with an average longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient for samples printed on paper substrates measured as d33, eff, paper = 13.57 ± 2.84 pC/N; the largest measured value was 18.37 pC/N on paper substrates. Calligraphy preservation requires strict humidity and temperature environment, however, there are feeling differences between calligraphy and currently used sensors. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to employ calligraphy itself (composed of paper and carbonic ink) as a sensor instead of sensitive components based on metals or semiconductors to eliminate sensing deviations. Carbonic ink can be decorated on paper substrate through dip coating or hand writing and the as-prepared composite calligraphy (CIP) is served as multifunctional sensor for humidity and temperature monitoring. The CIP demonstrates an admirable sensitivity to water molecules, showing a high humidity sensitivity of 506.36%/RH in the range of 94–100%RH and liquid water sensitivity of 17,680%. A linear negative temperature coefficient dependence of CIP as a temperature sensor is observed, and it exhibits outstanding performances including admirable temperature sensitivity of −3.13%/°C and prominent stability. As a result, CIP with accurate humidity and temperature sensing capability based on carbonic ink and paper as sensing element and flexible substrate shows brilliant possibility in calligraphy conservation. In medical institutions, radiation shielding is an effective strategy to protect medical personnel and patients from exposure. Reducing the weight of the shield worn by medical personnel in the radiation generating area plays a key role in improving their productivity and mobility. In this study, a new lightweight radiation shield was developed by electrospinning a polymer-tungsten composite material to produce nanofibers with a multi-layered thin-film structure similar to that of a morpho butterfly wing. The fabricated shield was in the form of 0.1 mm thick flexible shielding paper. The multi-layer structure of the thin shielding paper was obtained through nanofiber pattern formation via electrospinning a dispersion of tungsten particles. At 0.1 mm thickness, the paper's shielding rate was 64.88% at 60 keV. Furthermore, at 0.3 mm thick and arranged in a laminated structure, the shielding rate was 90.10% and the lead equivalent was 0.296 mmPb. When used as an apron material, the weight can be reduced by 45% compared to existing lead products. In addition, the material is highly processable and can be used to manufacture various flexible products, such as hats, gloves, underwear, and scarves used in medical institutions. In recent years, electroactive paper emerged as a new alternative in the field of smart actuators. It is based on a cellulose material which is able to bend under the influence of an external electric field similarly as ionic polymer metal composites. The bending mechanism is mainly attributed to the migration of ionic charges over the thickness of a thin sheet of paper. The present contribution proposes a numerical framework for the simulation of electroactive paper. It is based on a scaled boundary plate formulation for isogeometric analysis. In contrast to the standard scaled boundary plate approach, the scaling direction is solved numerically by a B-Spline approximation. This allows to render nonlinear effects over the plate thickness as well as displacement fields of higher continuity. The model is applicable to very thin structures such as electroactive paper, and it also captures the nonlinear ionic charge distribution which is coupled to the bending mechanism of the actuator. The aim of this study is to employ a response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize experimental parameters in microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µ-PADs). The independent parameters include concentrations and volumes of acetylcholinesterase, acetylthiocholine iodide, and 5,5-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid). Their effect on mean color intensity was tested and optimized. From the analysis of variance, high regression and fitting values were obtained between the experimental and RSM predicted mean color intensity. Under optimum conditions, satisfactory linearity (R2 > 0.9990) in the range of 0.25–16 mg/L was obtained for the studied pesticides. The limit of detection (LOD) varies from 0.13 to 0.27 mg/L; high precision (RSD of 3.8–8.0%), reproducibility (RSD of 7.2–11.0%), and recovery (78–97%) were achieved. The RSM approach has been demonstrated to be more efficient than the traditional approach. In the field of deep matching, a large amount of noisy data in Chinese long texts affects the matching effect. Most long-form text matching models use all text data indiscriminately, which results in a large amount of noisy data, and thus the PageRank algorithm is combined with Transformer to filter noise. For sentence-level noise detection, after calculating the overlap rate of words to evaluate the similarity, a sentence-level relationship graph is constructed and filtered by using the PageRank algorithm; for word-level noise detection, based on the attention score in Transformer, a word graph is established, then the PageRank algorithm is executed on graph, combined with self-attention weights, to select keywords to highlight topic relevance, the noisy words are filtered sequentially at different layers in the module, layer by layer. In addition, during the model training, PolyLoss is applied to replace the traditional binary Cross-Entropy loss function, thus reducing the difficulty of hyperparameter tuning. Finally, a better filtering strategy is proposed and experiments are conducted to verify it on two Chinese long-form text matching datasets. The disappearance of bibliographic heritage is one of the biggest problems facing libraries. One of the most common methods used to restore paper, lining, is to apply a reinforcing layer to the document. This study focuses on lining papers with bacterial cellulose (BC) sheets from Gluconacetobacter sucrofermentans. For this purpose, several model papers have been selected. They have been characterized before and after the lining with this BC and a specific Japanese paper (JP) to compare both materials. Taking into account the differences between bacterial and vegetal cellulose is expected that the results may be similar to other BC and JP. The samples have been characterized before and after an aging process. There are no significant differences in some of the characteristics studied. Nevertheless, BC-lined papers present higher gloss values and b* coordinate. The wettability decreases with both BC and JP. However, in papers lined with BC, the wettability decreases more markedly and independently of the model paper used. This is related to the sealing of the surface structure by BC, which also leads to a reduction of air permeability. When the lined papers go through an aging process, there are no significant changes in any characteristic, except in b* and L* color coordinates. Additionally, the wettability rate decreases in all cases. This study indicates that papers lined with BC are stable over time. The thermal response in paper has been studied by thermography. It was observed that an inhomogeneous deformation pattern arose in the paper samples during tensile testing. In the plastic regime a pattern of warmer streaks could be observed in the samples. On the same samples digital image correlation (DIC) was used to study local strain fields. It was concluded that the heat patterns observed by thermography coincided with the deformation patterns observed by DIC. Because of its fibrous network structure, paper has an inhomogeneous micro-structure, which is called formation. It could be shown that the formation was the cause of the inhomogeneous deformations in paper. Finite element simulations was used to show how papers with different degrees of heterogeneity would deform. Creped papers, where the strain at break has been increased, were analysed. For these paper it was seen that an overlaid compaction of the paper was created during the creping process. During tensile testing this was recovered as the paper network structure was strained. Rewritable paper has recently become prevalent in both academic research and marketplace due to the potential environmental advantages, including forest conservation, pollution reduction, energy saving and resource sustainability. However, its real-life applications are limited by a lack of effective strategy to realize multicolour and water-jet printing on rewritable paper with long legible image-lasting times. Herein, we report an effective strategy to construct rewritable paper based on colour or luminescence switching induced by dynamic metal-ligand coordination. This type of rewritable paper can be conveniently utilized for multicolour water-jet printing by using aqueous solutions containing different metal salts as ink. In addition, the printed images on the water-jet rewritable paper can be retained for a long time (> 6 months), which shows great progress compared to previous work. Academic literature retrieval concerns about the selection of papers that are most likely to match a user's information needs. Most of the retrieval systems are limited to list-output models, in which the retrieval results are isolated from each other. In this paper, we aim to uncover the relationships between the retrieval results and propose a method to build structural retrieval results for academic literature, which we call a paper evolution graph (PEG). The PEG describes the evolution of diverse aspects of input queries through several evolution chains of papers. By using the author, citation, and content information, PEGs can uncover various underlying relationships among the papers and present the evolution of articles from multiple viewpoints. Our system supports three types of input queries: keyword query, single-paper query, and two-paper query. The construction of a PEG consists mainly of three steps. First, the papers are soft-clustered into communities via metagraph factorization, during which the topic distribution of each paper is obtained. Second, topically cohesive evolution chains are extracted from the communities that are relevant to the query. Each chain focuses on one aspect of the query. Finally, the extracted chains are combined to generate a PEG, which fully covers all the topics of the query. Investigating the relevant literature is very important for research activities. However, it is difficult to select the most appropriate and important academic papers from the enormous number of papers published annually. Researchers search paper databases by combining keywords, and then select papers to read using some evaluation measure—often, citation count. However, the citation count of recently published papers tends to be very small because citation count measures accumulated importance. This paper focuses on the possibility of classifying high-quality papers superficially using attributes such as publication year, publisher, and words in the abstract. To examine this idea, we construct classifiers by applying machine-learning algorithms and evaluate these classifiers using cross-validation. Recently, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have proven to be promising energy harvesters, but they can also play the role of self-powered human motion sensors. Thus, we design a TENG device based on chitosan-cotton-paper (CCP-TENG) to harvest mechanical energy and serve as a self-powered sensor. The chitosan-cotton-paper (CCP) film and PTFE were used as the triboelectric materials, and aluminum foil served as the conductive electrode. According to results, the CCP-TENG can realize an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 162 V and a short-circuit current (Isc) of 7.2 μA. Meanwhile, the maximum output power density of the CCP-TENG can reach 322.56 mW/m2 with a match load of 20 MΩ. In addition, the CCP-TENG can be used as a self-powered grip force sensor, which has important application value in human health monitoring. Mechanical properties of fiber-based materials, such as paper, are governed by the heterogeneous microstructure induced by the formation process. For example, in paper materials during tensile tests, lower strains are observed in the flocs (fiber aggregates where the basis weight is larger than the average one) than in the antiflocs (complement of flocs). To explain such behavior, we investigated the mechanical and structural properties of both flocs and antiflocs. Using tensile tests on flocs and antiflocs, we measured their elastic modulus and found that the elastic modulus of flocs was larger than the antiflocs' one. To understand these differences, a multiscale structural analysis was conducted on 3D X-ray images of flocs and antiflocs at two different spatial resolutions. We found that the floc was thicker than the antifloc, whereas the microscale analysis showed the studied floc and antifloc exhibited the same bulk porosity. Then, it was concluded that the difference in elastic modulus between flocs and antiflocs is mainly due to their thickness difference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Xylanases are widely used enzymes in the food, textile, and paper industries. Most efficient xylanases have been identified from lignocellulose-degrading microbiota, such as the microbiota of the cow rumen and the termite hindgut. Xylanase genes from efficient pulp and paper wastewater treatment (PPWT) microbiota have been previously recovered by metagenomics, assigning most of the xylanase genes to the GH10 family. In this study, a total of 40 GH10 family xylanase genes derived from a certain PPWT microbiota were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). Among these xylanase genes, 14 showed xylanase activity on beechwood substrate. Two of these, PW-xyl9 and PW-xyl37, showed high activities, and were purified to evaluate their xylanase properties. Values of optimal pH and temperature for PW-xyl9 were pH 7 and 60 ℃, respectively, while those for PW-xyl37 were pH 7 and 55 ℃, respectively; their specific xylanase activities under optimal conditions were 470.1 U/mg protein and 113.7 U/mg protein, respectively. Furthermore, the Km values of PW-xyl9 and PW-xyl37 were determined as 8.02 and 18.8 g/L, respectively. The characterization of these two xylanases paves the way for potential application in future pulp and paper production and other industries, indicating that PPWT microbiota has been an undiscovered reservoir of efficient lignocellulase genes. This study demonstrates that a metagenomic approach has the potential to screen efficient xylanases of uncultured microorganisms from lignocellulose-degrading microbiota. The establishment of the Mining Software Repositories (MSR) data showcase conference track has encouraged researchers to provide data sets as a basis for further empirical studies. The objective of this study is to examine the usage of data papers published in the MSR proceedings in terms of use frequency, users, and use purpose. Data track papers were collected from the MSR data showcase track and through the manual inspection of older MSR proceedings. The use of data papers was established through manual citation searching followed by reading the citing studies and dividing them into strong and weak citations. Contrary to weak, strong citations truly use the data set of a data paper. Data papers were then manually clustered based on their content, whereas their strong citations were classified by hand according to the knowledge areas of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge. A survey study on 108 authors and users of data papers provided further insights regarding motivation and effort in data paper production, encouraging and discouraging factors in data set use, and future desired direction regarding data papers. We found that 65% of the data papers have been used in other studies, with a long-tail distribution in the number of strong citations. Weak citations to data papers usually refer to them as an example. MSR data papers are cited in total less than other MSR papers. A considerable number of the strong citations stem from the teams that authored the data papers. Publications providing Version Control System (VCS) primary and derived data are the most frequent data papers and the most often strongly cited ones. Enhanced developer data papers are the least common ones, and the second least frequently strongly cited. Data paper authors tend to gather data in the context of other research. Users of data sets appreciate high data quality and are discouraged by lack of replicability of data set construction. Data related to machine learning or derived from the manufacturing sector are two suggestions of the respondents for future data papers. Overall, data papers have provided the foundation for a significant number of studies, but there is room for improvement in their utilization. This can be done by setting a higher bar for their publication, by encouraging their use, by promoting open science initiatives, and by providing incentives for the enrichment of existing data collections. The sensitive quantitative analysis of trace heavy metallic elements (Cd, Mn, Cr, and Cu) in aqueous solutions was achieved successfully through the combination of filter paper enrichment with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Filter paper was enriched with 0.4 mL aqueous solutions to form a homogeneous sample layer on the surface of the metallic target. Considering the limits of detection, the values deduced with calibration curves already exhibited the high performance of the proposed method at several hundred or 10 μg/L (Cd 0.165, Mn 0.035, Cr 0.012, and Cu 0.078 mg/L), lower than or comparable to those using other similar methods. The LIBS results agreed reasonably well with those from ICP-MS for real samples. All results showed that our method was suitable and accurate for rapid on-site detection of trace metals in aqueous solutions. This indicates that filter paper enrichment combined with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is a feasible approach to wastewater quality monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Establishing and optimizing a distributed parameter thermal path model for transformer windings is an important means to analyze the hot-spot temperature of the windings; furthermore, in the process of improving the thermal path model of transformers and improving the accuracy of their models, the thermal characteristics of the insulation paper are extremely important. A microscopic thermal contact resistance model was established for the contact interface of insulation paper and copper, according to the microscopic morphology parameters of copper and insulation paper observed by atomic force microscopy, the thermal contact resistance under different temperatures was calculated. A dual heat flow test platform was built to test the heat transfer behavior of four different thickness insulation papers under four temperatures, and the thermal contact resistance and thermal bulk resistance with temperature were analyzed. The results show that as the temperature increases, the thermal resistance of the insulation paper becomes larger and the thermal conductivity decreases. The average error between the experimental and theoretical values of the thermal contact resistance under four temperature points in the study is 6.6%. High per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substance (PFAS) concentrations have been detected in agricultural soils in Southwest Germany. Discharges of PFAS-contaminated paper sludge and compost are suspected to be the cause of the contamination. Perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) have been detected also in groundwater, drinking water, and plants in this area. Recently, previously unknown compounds have been identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Major contaminants were polyfluorinated dialkylated phosphate esters (diPAPs) and N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide ethanol–based phosphate diester (diSAmPAP). In this study, HRMS screening for PFAS was applied to 14 soil samples from the contaminated area and 14 impregnated paper samples which were from a similar period than the contamination. The paper samples were characterized by diPAPs (from 4:2/6:2 to 12:2/12:2), fluorotelomer mercapto alkyl phosphates (FTMAPs; 6:2/6:2 to 10:2/10:2), and diSAmPAP. In soil samples, diPAPs and their transformation products (TPs) were the major contaminants, but also FTMAPs, diSAmPAP, and their TPs occurred. The distribution patterns of the carbon chain lengths of the precursor PFAS in soil samples were shown to resemble those in paper samples. This supports the hypothesis that paper sludge is a major source of contamination. The presence of major degradation products like PFCAs, FTSAs, or PFOS and their distribution of carbon chain lengths indicate the activity of biotic or abiotic degradation processes and selective leaching processes from the upper soil horizons. Background: The Mediterranean Sea is a region characterized by high seismic activity, with at least 200 tsunami events recorded from the fourth century to the present twenty-first century. Numerous studies have been conducted to understand past tsunami events, earthquake–tsunami generation, tsunami recurrence periods, tsunami vulnerability zones, and tsunami hazard mitigation strategies. Therefore, gaining insights into future trends and opportunities in Mediterranean Sea tsunami research is crucial for significantly contributing to all relevant aspects. This study aims to assess such trends and opportunities through a scientometric analysis of publications indexed by Web of Science from 2000 to 2023. Results: Based on a selection of 329 publications, including research articles, review articles, book chapters, and conference papers, published between 2000 and 2023, Italy has the highest number of publications and citations in this field. The number of publications has increased significantly, especially after the 2004 Indian Ocean, 2011 Tohoku, and 2018 Palu tsunamis. According to the keyword analysis, the terms "tsunami", "earthquake", "hazard", "wave", "Mediterranean", "coast", and "tectonic" were the most frequently used in these publications. Research themes consist of four classifications: motor themes, such as seismic hazard; specific but well-developed themes, like tsunamiite; emerging or disappearing themes, for example, climate change; and general or basic themes, such as equations and megaturbidite. The number of publications related to the motor theme classification continued to grow throughout 2000–2023. Topics from 2011–2023 are more complex compared to 2000–2010, characterized by the emergence of new keywords such as evacuation planning, risk reduction, risk mitigation, building vulnerability, coastal vulnerability, climate change, probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment (PTVA-3 and PTVA-4). However, topics that were popular in the 2000–2010 period (e.g., paleotsunami deposits, earthquake, and tsunami propagation analysis) also increased in 2011–2023. Conclusions: Research topics with high centrality and density such as seismic hazard will continue to develop and prospect. Flexible and easy fabrication gas sensors can be utilized in various applications. In this study, we have proposed and prepared zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods and reduced grapheme oxide (rGO) nanocomposite materials, fully printed on highly transparent paper substrates, and thoroughly investigated and optimized the performance of these gas sensors to ethanol at room temperature (25 °C). Among them, the average length of the ZnO nanorods is 200 nm and the diameter is 30 nm, integrated with rGO, the two-dimensional ZnO/rGO nanocomposites were obtained. The ratios of ZnO and rGO in the materials were controlled, ZnO/rGO nanocomposites ink was prepared, and thin films were coated on paper substrate to acquire transparent flexible paper gas sensors. Furthermore, the fabricated ZnO/rGO paper-based gas sensors achieved ppb grade detection of ethanol at room temperature (25 °C) with high performance (favorable selectivity, high gas sensitivity, good stability, and rapid response/recovery time). Specially, the proposed paper-based gas sensors are not only transparent but are also better in breathability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, which have great application prospects in handheld or wearable electronic devices for the detection of trace ethanol at room temperature. Background: Undergraduate STEM instructors want to help students learn and retain knowledge for their future courses and careers. One promising evidence-based technique that is thought to increase long-term memory is spaced retrieval practice, or repeated testing over time. The beneficial effect of spacing has repeatedly been demonstrated in the laboratory as well as in undergraduate mathematics courses, but its generalizability across diverse STEM courses is unknown. We investigated the effect of spaced retrieval practice in nine introductory STEM courses. Retrieval practice opportunities were embedded in bi-weekly quizzes, either massed on a single quiz or spaced over multiple quizzes. Student performance on practice opportunities and a criterial test at the end of each course were examined as a function of massed or spaced practice. We also conducted a single-paper meta-analysis on criterial test scores to assess the generalizability of the effectiveness of spaced retrieval practice across introductory STEM courses. Results: Significant positive effects of spacing on the criterial test were found in only two courses (Calculus I for Engineers and Chemistry for Health Professionals), although small positive effect sizes were observed in two other courses (General Chemistry and Diversity of Life). Meta-analyses revealed a significant spacing effect when all courses were included, but not when calculus was excluded. The generalizability of the spacing effect across STEM courses therefore remains unclear. Conclusions: Although we could not clearly determine the generalizability of the benefits of spacing in STEM courses, our findings indicate that spaced retrieval practice could be a low-cost method of improving student performance in at least some STEM courses. More work is needed to determine when, how, and for whom spaced retrieval practice is most beneficial. The effect of spacing in classroom settings may depend on some design features such as the nature of retrieval practice activities (multiple-choice versus short answer) and/or feedback settings, as well as student actions (e.g., whether they look at feedback or study outside of practice opportunities).
