Structured reporting in radiology continues to hold substantial potential to improve the quality of service provided to patients and referring physicians. Despite many physicians' preference for structured reports and various efforts by radiological societies and some vendors, structured reporting has still not been widely adopted in clinical routine. While in many countries national radiological societies have launched initiatives to further promote structured reporting, cross-institutional applications of report templates and incentives for usage of structured reporting are lacking. Various legislative measures have been taken in the USA and the European Union to promote interoperable data formats such as Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) in the context of the EU Health Data Space (EHDS) which will certainly be relevant for the future of structured reporting. Lastly, recent advances in artificial intelligence and large language models may provide innovative and efficient approaches to integrate structured reporting more seamlessly into the radiologists' workflow. The ESR will remain committed to advancing structured reporting as a key component towards more value-based radiology. Practical solutions for structured reporting need to be provided by vendors. Policy makers should incentivize the usage of structured radiological reporting, especially in cross-institutional setting. The aim of this discussion is to establish a connection between the model for sandwich beams presented in Schöftner (Acta Mech 234:2543–2560, 2023) and the so-called Krajcinovic model. Although the two models turn out to be quite similar, Krajcinovic model displays a richer kinematics and has been developed in the literature by following slightly different methodologies with respect to that adopted by Schöftner, the latter having the merit of providing equilibrium equations that allow the computation of the interfacial stresses. The oil-paper insulation of high-frequency (HF) transformers frequently withstands high-frequency over-voltages at frequencies of several kHz and above. This leads to the occurrence of partial discharge (PD), which causes premature insulation failure in HF transformers. In order to investigate the effect of PD under high-frequency stresses on oil-impregnated Nomex paper, this paper analyzes the surface morphology, bond-broken types of the molecular chain, and product types formed for oil paper after PD degradation. Then, the damage mechanism of oil-immersed Nomex paper between high-frequency and AC stress is explored. The experimental results show that the branches of creepage do not exist in the oil-paper insulation during the entire discharge process under high-frequency stresses, and that their damage degree is higher than that of AC stress. This is mainly because the benzene ring of oil-impregnated Nomex paper is destroyed and opened caused by high-energy particles, the heating effect in HF discharge, and the bulk effect. Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) papers have attracted great interests in recent years because of their attractive performance and the green resource of CNF. However, the thermomechanical properties of CNF papers are insufficient for some sophisticated applications that require higher mechanical properties or smart functionalities. In this paper, a dual bio-inspired strategy is reported to improve the thermal and mechanical properties, as well as the humidity-responsive behavior of CNF papers. CNF is first functionalized by mussel-inspired polydopamine, and then, composite CNF papers with nacre-like layered structure are fabricated by the incorporation of graphene oxide (GO). In addition, Fe3+ is introduced into the composite CNF papers to provide coordination cross-linking for each components. By such compositional and structural design, the composite papers demonstrate significantly enhanced mechanical properties as compared to original CNF paper. Meanwhile, the improved thermal stability and humidity-responsiveness are also demonstrated. This study is expected to provide alternative approach for high-performance and functional CNF materials. In the field of wearable electronic devices, flexible sensors based on two-dimensional layered materials have received a great deal of attention owing to high mechanical strength and stable chemical composition. The cellulose-based paper-substrate offers an affordable and bio-compatible device configuration for the fabrication of flexible, light weight and wearable strain or pressure sensors. Herein, we demonstrate the high-yield synthesis of atomically thin MoS2 nanosheets by sono-chemical exfoliation technique and fabrication of the paper based piezoresistive pressure sensor. Highly sensitive and large area MoS2 functionalized pressure sensor are fabricated using the readily available tissue papers and tested in pressure range 2–25 kPa. Owing to optimized device structure, the responsivity and pressure sensitivity of piezoresistive sensor are found to be about 555.2% and 0.638 kPa−1, respectively. The nicely coated MoS2 nanosheets on tiny-threads of tissues papers offers the retention of the device performance even after few hundreds of cycles of loading and unloading. The device also shows the similar pressure sensitivity even after 10 months in ambient environment due to environmental stability of the MoS2 nanosheets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poly (para-phenylene terephthamide) PPTA-based specialty paper suffers from limited mechanical and electrical insulation properties due to weak interfacial interactions between chemically inert PPTA microfibers. Herein, in order to activate the fiber surface, PPTA nanofibers were prepared through DMSO/KOH deprotonation process. Whereafter, a composite paper with reinforced concrete structure was constructed by combining PPTA microfibers and PPTA nanofibers through vacuum-assisted filtration process. The results show that the composite paper has a high mechanical strength of ~ 84.8 MPa, high Young's modulus of ∼ 2.4 GPa, and elongation at break of ∼ 7%. Meanwhile, the Weibull distribution model predicts the dielectric breakdown strength of composite paper as high as 74.4 kV/mm. In addition, the composite paper also exhibited high-temperature resistance and UV resistance, indicating great advantages for operating under high temperature and electrical insulation conditions. Purpose: The orthopaedic surgeons, especially the young budding surgeons should have a well-balanced knowledge of the past evidence as well the current evidence in the literature for the appropriate as well as optimum management of tibial plateau fractures. Bibliometric analysis of the top-cited papers on tibial plateau fracture management can help know their concurrent interests, deficiencies and conflicting issues regarding their management. This study aimed to identify the 50 most cited research articles in tibial plateau research and analyse their characteristics. Methods: We searched the Thompson Reuters Web of Science database for articles relevant to tibial plateau fracture and prepared a list of top 50 cited articles that included original articles and review articles concerning tibial plateau fractures. The included articles were analysed for contributing journals, corresponding author's country, publication year, cumulative citations, annual citations, citation trends over time, level of evidence and a qualitative review. Results: The search strategy resulted in 2263 articles. The top 50 cited articles were published from 1974 to 2014 and belonged to 12 journal sources. There were 47 original articles and 3 review articles. The average citations per article were 126.2, and the annual citations per article were 6.478 per year. The top-cited articles were relevant to the strategies in the management, classification, fracture reduction, articular restoration, types and number of fixation devices, surgical approaches, associated menisco-ligamentous injuries and applicability of bone grafts/substitutes in tibial plateau fractures. Conclusion: The current bibliometric analysis summarises the top-cited evidence concerning tibial plateau fractures and can be a potential resource for reviewing and locating the same. The analysis shows that most top-cited evidence belongs to the year 2000 onwards. Also, recent articles have a higher annual citation rate. A limited number of journals and mostly, western countries have contributed to the top-cited evidence. Whilst the top-cited evidence has touched several aspects of tibial plateau fractures, it is in the form of level IV case series. Cellulose, as a component of green plants, becomes attractive for fabricating biocompatible flexible functional devices but is plagued by hydrophilic properties, which make it easily break down in water by poor mechanical stability. Here we report a class of SiO2-nanoparticle-decorated bacteria-cellulose meta-skin with superior stability in water, excellent machining property, ultrathin thickness, and active bacteria-repairing capacity. We further develop functional ultrasonic metasurfaces based on meta-skin paper-cutting that can generate intricate patterns of ~10 μm precision. Benefited from the perfect ultrasound insulation of surface Cassie-Baxter states, we utilize meta-skin paper-cutting to design and fabricate ultrathin (~20 μm) and super-light (<20 mg) chip-scale devices, such as nonlocal holographic meta-lens and the 3D imaging meta-lens, realizing complicated acoustic holograms and high-resolution 3D ultrasound imaging in far fields. The decorated bacteria-cellulose ultrasonic metasurface opens the way for exploiting flexible and biologically degradable metamaterial devices with functionality customization and key applications in advanced biomedical engineering technologies. The fast-growing healthcare demand for user-friendly and affordable analytical tools is driving the efforts to develop reliable platforms for the customization of therapy based on individual health conditions. In this overall scenario, we developed a paper-based electrochemical sensor for the quantification of iron ions in serum as a cost-effective sensing tool for the correct supplement administration. In detail, the working electrode of the screen-printed device has been modified with a nanocomposite constituted of carbon black and gold nanoparticles with a drop-casting procedure. Square wave voltammetry has been adopted as an electrochemical technique. This sensor was further modified with Nafion for iron quantification in serum after sample treatment with trifluoroacetic acid. Under optimized conditions, iron ions have been detected with a LOD down to 0.05 mg/L and a linearity up to 10 mg/L in standard solution. The obtained results have been compared with reference methods namely commercial colorimetric assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy, obtaining a good correlation within the experimental errors. This study introduces a novel geotechnical composite material comprising two types of fill material sourced from the paper industry—deinking paper sludge ash (DPSA) and deinking paper sludge (DPS). Five composites with different DPSA and DPS contents were investigated. Two composites were selected for further analyses. The technology and procedure for composite installation were implemented in field tests. The composites with 80% and 70% DPSA exhibited the elasticity required to withstand minor landslide slip deformations, in addition to achieving sufficiently high values of uniaxial compressive strength. The composites had a low maximum dry density value, which led to fewer settlements in the entire support structure. The enhanced shear characteristics can enable the construction of a thinner retaining wall. The delay between preparation and installation of the composites was further investigated. The field tests confirmed that the composites with 80% and 70% DPSA can be installed on the construction site 4 h and even 24 h after mixing. In 2018, a retaining wall structure with 70% DPSA and 30% DPS was successfully implemented near a railway line using conventional technology as followed-up research to the herein presented study. Results have been derived from work performed in the scope of the H2020 Paperchain project in which novel circular economy models centered on the valorization of the waste streams generated by the pulp and paper industry as secondary raw material for several resource-intensive sectors, including the construction sector, have been developed. The low prevalence effect (LPE) is a cognitive limitation commonly found in visual search tasks, in which observers miss rare targets. Drivers looking for road hazards are also subject to the LPE. However, not all road hazards are equal; a paper bag floating down the road is much less dangerous than a rampaging moose. Here, we asked whether perceived hazardousness modulated the LPE. To examine this, we took a dataset in which 48 raters assessed the perceived dangerousness of hazards in recorded road videos (Song et al. in Behav Res Methods, 2023. https://doi.org/10.3758/s13428-023-02299-8) and correlated the ratings with data from a hazard detection task using the same stimuli with varying hazard prevalence rates (Kosovicheva et al. in Psychon Bull Rev 30(1):212–223, 2023. https://doi.org/10.3758/s13423-022-02159-0). We found that while hazard detectability increased monotonically with hazardousness ratings, the LPE was comparable across perceived hazardousness levels. Our findings are consistent with the decision criterion account of the LPE, in which target rarity induces a conservative shift in criterion. Importantly, feedback was necessary for a large and consistent LPE; when participants were not given feedback about their accuracy, the most dangerous hazards showed a non-significant LPE. However, eliminating feedback was not enough to induce the opposite of the LPE—prevalence induced concept change (Levari et al. in Science 360(6396):1465–1467, 2018. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aap8731), in which participants adopt a more liberal criterion when instances of a category become rare. We synthesized a flexible lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode with a flower-like CuCo2O4 nanostructure grown on the surface of conductively-treated filter paper. The filter paper, made of cotton fibers, has good flexibility, but its poor conductivity limits its application in flexible electrodes. An Ni coating by magnetron sputtering can significantly improve its conductivity, which enables it to be used as a substrate for flexible electrodes. The flower-like CuCo2O4 nanostructure is assembled from CuCo2O4 nanowires with a diameter of 50 nm, while the CuCo2O4 nanowires are assembled from CuCo2O4 nanoparticles with a size of 10–20 nm. The gap between the stacked CuCo2O4 nanoparticles causes the porous structure of the CuCo2O4 nanowires. The high theoretical capacity of CuCo2O4, the porous structure of the CuCo2O4 nanowires, and the tiny CuCo2O4 nanoparticles lead to the excellent electrochemical performance of the CuCo2O4 flower-like nanostructure. It maintains capacity very well during cycling and delivers a high capacity of 989 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1. As a flexible LIB anode, the composite with the flower-like CuCo2O4 nanostructure grown on the surface of conductively-treated filter paper delivers a stable capacity of 544 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and a capacity of 304 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 2000 mA g−1. Because of excellent insulation properties and thermal stability, meta-aramid paper can be commonly applied to a vast number of fields, like power systems. But poriferous and relatively lax structure of meta-aramid paper would limit its applications in high-voltage environment. This paper proposes a sandwich structure design to combine PDA@BNNS/PMIA film and meta-aramid paper with high breakdown strength. After coating with 6 wt% PDA@BNNS/PMIA solution, this kind of paper became more compact, so there were few pores in the paper and it further enhanced the mechanical and dielectric performances of specimens. The tensile strength in the cross direction increased from 31.3 to 40.5 MPa, and the performance in the machine direction was from 75.5 to 78.9 MPa. Furthermore, the breakdown strength of compound-coated paper achieved 55 kV/mm, which is much higher than meta-aramid paper. Additionally, compound-coated paper still remained outstanding thermal stability. Overall, our fabricated PDA@BNNS/PMIA compound-coated paper has excellent comprehensive properties, which provides a broad prospect for the applications in high-temperature and high-voltage transformers. In high-mix, low-volume manufacturing, end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) must be able to handle various products. Conventional EOATs usually comprise fixed or limited-adjustable frames (i.e. manually or using short-stroke pistons) over-equipped with multiple grippers, which are selectively activated based on the product to be grasped. This paper presents a smart gripper frame equipped with only four grippers capable of automatically adjusting to a product's unique geometry. To this end, a two-dimensional grasp planner has been developed that is supplied with product contours from depth images. The proposed approach has been successfully validated in multiple industrial use cases involving objects with different dimensions and materials, and applying various grippers. The study's goal was to develop a spore-based paper strip biosensor for detecting ß-lactam antibiotics in milk using the enzyme induction principle. A new spore-based paper strip biosensor has been developed after important operating parameters such as spore volume, substrate volume, exposure time and temperature, and incubation time and temperature were optimised. The limit of detection for various ß-lactam antibiotics, including amoxicillin, penicillin, ampicillin, carbenicillin, cloxacillin, nafcillin, oxacillin, cephalothin, cefalexin, cefoxitin, cefazolin, and cefuroxime, was determined in milk with detection sensitivity of 1 ppb, 2 ppb, 2 ppb, 10 ppb, 10 ppb, 10 ppb, 20 ppb, 10 ppb 1000 ppb, 10 ppb 300 ppb and 100 ppb, respectively. It was also tested with other contaminants such non-ß-lactam antibiotics, pesticides, aflatoxin, heavy metals, and other chemical contaminants, and no interference was found, indicating that the created biosensor had a low rate of false positive and negative results. In comparison to the AOAC-approved CHARM-ROSA ß-lactam strip test, which identified 7 raw milk and zero pasteurised milk samples positive for ß-lactam antibiotics, the sensor was further analysed and verified using 200 raw milk and 105 pasteurised milk samples. This indicates a perfect match between our biosensor and the AOAC-approved CHARM-ROSA ß-lactam strip test. The developed spore-based paper strip biosensors are expected to be useful in the rapid and cost-effective detection of ß-lactam antibiotic residues in milk samples at the dairy farm, reception dock, and production units, respectively. In this study, we present a promising and facile approach toward the fabrication of non-toxic, water-stable, and eco-friendly luminescent fiber paper composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer and CsPbBr3@SiO2 core–shell perovskite nanocrystals. PCL-perovskite fiber paper was fabricated using a conventional electrospinning process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly revealed incorporation of CsPbBr3@SiO2 nanocrystals in the fibers, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that incorporation of CsPbBr3@SiO2 nanocrystals did not affect the surface and diameter of the PCL-perovskite fibers. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle measurements have demonstrated that the PCL-perovskite fibers exhibit excellent thermal and water stability. The fabricated PCL-perovskite fiber paper exhibited a bright green emission centered at 520 nm upon excitation by ultra-violet (UV) light (374 nm). We have demonstrated that fluorescent PCL-perovskite fiber paper is a promising candidate for anti-counterfeiting applications because various patterns can be printed on the paper, which only become visible after exposure to UV light at 365 nm. Cell proliferation tests revealed that the PCL-perovskite fibers are cytocompatibility. Consequently, they may be suitable for biocompatible anti-counterfeiting. Herein, a miniaturized, three-electrode paper-based electrochemical sensing platform for selective and sensitive electroanalytical sensing of hypochlorite has been reported. A hybrid method for fabricating the electrochemical device on the paper-based substrate, using ink-jet printing with conductive carbon inks as counter and reference electrode, has been demonstrated. Further, a CuO@Graphite sheet was incorporated separately using adhesive double-sided tape on the paper-based substrate, which served as the working electrode. The prepared device was subjected to hypochlorite solution of 1 mM to explore the electrochemical behavior of chlorine. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square-wave voltammetry (SQWV) were leveraged in the potential window of − 0.7 V to 0 V for conducting the experiments, whereby a sharp reduction peak at a peak potential E0 = − 0.43 V vs Ag/AgCl was obtained. Further, the consequence of potential scan rate and the effect of concentration and interference from other chemicals were also analyzed. A linear concentration range of 90–10 nM and a detection limit of 13.15 nM (9.78 × 10–4 ppm) with standard deviation of 1.013 were obtained. Wounds often develop infections caused by microbes. Preventing these microbes from causing infection is essential for wound healing. The current study therefore focuses on the preparation of an Fp (cellulose) scaffold coated with antimicrobial clindamycin drug (Cl) and chitosan (Cs) for use in wound dressings. Fp was used as a control. Before testing the efficacy of ClCFp scaffolds against bacterial strains and evaluating their cytocompatibility, they were thoroughly characterized using microscopic, spectroscopic, BET, and X-ray techniques. These methods confirmed coating of Cs and Cl drug on Fp. No significant structural damage to the Fp was observed. The porosity and surface area were found to decrease with coating. Invitro studies with HGF cells showed that the cells not only adhered to the scaffolds and proliferated, but also exhibited good viability. The results of the antibacterial tests showed that ClCFp scaffold was effective against both E. coli, "gram-negative" bacteria, and S. aureus, "gram-positive bacteria". Docking studies performed for the transcription termination factor Rho of E. coli and penicillin-binding protein 2 of S. aureus against the Cl drug confirmed the interaction between the Cl drug and bacterial proteins. The adverse effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on human beings has sparked intense interest in the development of new sensors to effectively monitor UV and solar exposure. This paper describes a novel low-cost and flexible graphene oxide (GO)-based paper sensor capable of detecting the total amount of UV or sun energy delivered per unit area. GO is incorporated into the structure of standard printing paper, cellulose, via a low-cost fabrication technique. The effect of UV and solar radiation exposure on the GO paper-based sensor is investigated using a simple color change analysis. As a result, users can easily determine the amount of ultraviolet or solar energy received by the sensor using a simple color analysis application. A neural network (ANN) model is also explored to learn the relation between UV color intensity and exposure time, then digitally display the results. The accuracy for the developed ANN reached 96.83%. The disposable, cost-effective, simple, biodegradable, safe, and flexible characteristics of the paper-based UV sensor make it an attractive candidate for a variety of sensing applications. The infusion kinetics of tea bags containing black tea or green tea has been studied in detail in the past. However, the tea bag papers have never been characterized and evaluated earlier to understand their contribution towards tea bag infusion. In the present work, papers used for making tea bags were characterized for thickness, wettability, surface topography, pore size, porosity and permeance to understand their influence on infusion kinetics of tea bags. Scanning electron microscopy studies highlighted the pore structure and porous nature of tea bag papers. The porosity of tea bag paper was quantified using image processing and permeance was determined experimentally. Besides, a relationship between porosity and permeance of tea bag papers has been perceived. A general trend of increase in permeance with increasing porosity was observed. Woven nylon paper showed the highest permeance (23.9 × 10−5 m/s) when compared with other tea bag papers. Furthermore, an initial infusion rate was determined using initial infusion data of tea bag infusion for different tea bag papers. Melamine-impregnated paper is made by impregnating paper with melamine-formaldehyde resin and can be hot-pressed and laminated onto the surface of wood boards. If the paper has antibacterial activity, it can prevent the spread of indoor bacteria, but impregnated paper with a long-term antibacterial effect has not been proposed. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied as a reservoir of metal ions. In this study, a silver-metal organic framework (Ag-BTC) was synthesized by a green and scalable method at 60 °C (A-60) and at room temperature (A-25). The structure and thermal stability of the Ag-BTC were characterized. Compared with A-25, the structure and particle size distribution of A-60 were more regular and uniform. The thermal stability and the compatibility of Ag-BTC and MF resin were suitable for hot-pressing process. Ag-BTC in the cured impregnated paper exhibited the sustained-release performance of Ag+. The antibacterial ratio of decorated blockboards with 0.10 wt% A-25 to E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 99.99%, reaching Level I antibacterial grade. Compared with A-60-decorated blockboards, the better antibacterial activity of A-25-decorated blockboards was due to the release of more Ag+. We aimed to investigate differences in patients' anxiety and satisfaction between patients undergoing paper-based patient decision aid (PDA) for shared decision-making (SDM) and those receiving computer-based PDA. We retrospectively collected questionnaires before and after SDM. Basic demographic data as well as anxiety, satisfaction, knowledge acquisition, and participation in SDM were recorded. We divided our population into subgroups according to use of paper-based or computer-based PDA. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis was applied to assess the relationships among variables. In total, 304 patients who visited our Division of Nephrology were included in the final analysis. Overall, over half of the patients felt anxiety (n = 217, 71.4%). Near half of the patients felt a reduction in anxiety after SDM (n = 143, 47.0%) and 281 patients (92.4%) were satisfied with the whole process of SDM. When we divided all the patients based on use of paper-based or computer-based PDA, the reduction of anxiety level was greater in the patients who underwent paper-based PDA when compared with that of those who underwent computer-based PDA. However, there was no significant difference in satisfaction between the two groups. Paper-based PDA was as effective as computer-based PDA. Although often regarded a childhood toy, the design of paper airplanes is subtly complex. The design space and mapping from geometry to distance flown is highly nonlinear and probabilistic where a single airplane design exhibits a multitude of trajectory forms and flight distances. This makes optimization and understanding of their behavior challenging for humans. By understanding the behavior of paper airplanes and predicting flight behavior, there is a potential to improve the design of aerial vehicles that operate at low Reynolds numbers. By developing a robotic system that can fabricate, test, analyze, and model the flight behavior in an unsupervised fashion, a wide design space can be reliably characterized. We find there are discrete behavioral groups that result in different trajectories: nose dive, glide, and recovery glide. Informed by this characterization we propose a method of using Gaussian mixture models to extract the clusters of the design space that map to these different behaviors. This allows us to solve both the forward and reverse design problem for paper airplanes, and also to perform efficient optimization of the geometry for a given target flight distance. A procedure for the rapid simultaneous determination of anthraquinone and bisphenol A in paper and cardboard is proposed based on a combination of extraction with subcritical methanol and subsequent analysis of the extracts by HPLC‒tandem mass spectrometry. The achieved limits of detection are 25 and 250 µg/kg for anthraquinone and bisphenol A, respectively, and fully meet present-day safety requirements for pulp and paper products. The total duration of the analysis, including sample preparation, is not more than 45 min. The sensitivity of anthraquinone determination is 1‒2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the known procedures, including those with the preconcentration of analytes. Nanostructured MnO2 with different morphologies based on carbon fiber paper (CFP) had been successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal process. The emphasis of this report focuses on the effect of the Co doping content on the morphologies and electrochemical properties of as-obtained MnO2 electrodes, thereby obtaining the optimal electrode material. Such optimal hierarchical porous nanoflowers entwined with nanowires architecture (Co-MnO2/CFP-1) was obtained by a certain Co content, which displayed an excellent capacitive performance. The Co-MnO2/CFP-1 electrode achieved a relatively high specific capacitance of 161 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, and 57% of the capacitance retention for Co-MnO2/CFP-1 when the current density ranging from 1 to 8 A g−1, which was 27 times than MnO2 without Co doping (MnO2/CFP), proving its excellent rate capability. The Co-MnO2/CFP-1 electrode exhibited a prominent cycle stability of 98% in 10,000 cycles at 4 A g−1. This significant improvement of capacitive performance benefits result from a well-developed interconnected hierarchical structure and provides more electrochemical active site, facilitating the penetration and diffusion of electrolyte. Nitrocellulose (NC) membranes, as porous paper-like substrates with high protein-binding capabilities, are very popular in the field of point-of-care immunoassays. However, generating robust hydrophobic structures in NC membranes to fabricate microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) remains a great challenge. At present, the main method relies on an expensive wax printer. In addition, NC membranes very easy to adhere during the printing process due to electrostatic adsorption. Herein, we developed a facile, fast and low-cost strategy to fabricate μPADs in NC membranes by screen-printing polyurethane acrylate (PUA) as a barrier material for defining flow channels and reaction zones. Moreover, hydrophobic barriers based on UV-curable PUA can resist various surfactant solutions and organic solvents that are generally used in immunoassays and biochemical reactions. To validate the feasibility of this PUA-based NC membrane for immunoassays in point-of-care testing (POCT), we further designed and assembled a rotational paper-based analytical device for implementing a multiplexed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a simple manner. Using the proposed device under the optimal conditions, alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) could be identified, with limits of detection of 136 pg/mL and 174 pg/mL, respectively, which are below the threshold values of these two cancer biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. We believe that this reliable device provides a promising platform for the diagnosis of disease based on ELISA or other related bioassays in limited settings or remote regions. Paper sheets represent one of the infection risk sources inside educational and administrative institutions under biological pandemics. So, the present study aimed to validate the efficiency of gamma radiation or dry heat techniques to sterilize contaminated paper sheets with different indicator pathogens while retaining their structure. The results showed that gamma radiation at 6, 12, or 24 kGy can successfully kill Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi, and fungi such as Candida albicans. Moreover, dry heating at 100 °C for 60 min, 150 °C for 30 min, or 200 °C for 15 min can be successful in paper decontamination of all tested species. Surprisingly, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs proved that gamma radiation at 6 kGy, dry heat at 100 °C for 60 min or 150 °C for 30 min or 200 °C for 15 min, is suitable for paper sheet sterilization while maintaining their structure. Ultimately, dry heat is a simple, effective, fast, safe, and inexpensive technique for paper sterilization. It may be used as a precautionary step inside educational institutions, especially during written examination periods, to ensure a safe life for academic members during biological pandemics such as COVID-19. In paper degradation studies, the viscosity-average degree of polymerisation (DPv) is often used as a key indicator of the extent of degradation of cellulosic paper. DPv can be deduced from the viscosity of dilute paper solutions, as typically measured through glass capillary viscometry. The current study proposes an efficient, alternative method to evaluate DPv of cellulosic paper, which is based on rotational rheometry. The proposed methodology relies on the application of a shear flow in a thin film of cellulose solution to measure its dynamic viscosity, from which DPv can be subsequently derived in a straightforward fashion. Rheometry allows to measure the viscosity for a range of shear rates, which results in multiple DPv evaluations per sample, and thus in statistically representative data from an individual test. Further, rheometry typically requires considerably less paper mass per test than glass capillary viscometry, which makes the method attractive for paper degradation studies with limited sample availability. Also, rheometry measurements are less work-intensive than glass capillary viscometry measurements. The rheometry method has been applied to 4 hygrothermally aged cellulose paper samples and the unaged counterpart. The measurement results regarding the age-dependency of DPv and the number of cellulose chain scissions are compared to those obtained by glass capillary viscometry, showing a very good agreement. At a longer ageing time, both experimental methods reveal a non-linear decrease in time of DPv, and a non-linear increase in time of the number of cellulose chain scissions, which indicate that the cellulose ageing process is realistically captured. The agreement in measurement results further demonstrates that rheometry is an easy-to-use, accurate and efficient alternative for DPv measurements by glass capillary viscometry. Pollutants emerging from the effluents of paper mills eventually destroy the environment of our ecosystem. To find a proper solution of it, a cost-effective and environmentally benign technique is proposed here to remediate contaminants present in the effluent of paper mill in a sequential steps using advanced oxidation processes including Fenton reaction (FO) (Fe(II)/H2O2), modified Fenton oxidation (MFO) (Fe(II)/Zn(II)/H2O2) and biological flocculation process. A comparison and compilation among these techniques were carried out on the basis of the percentage removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) as well as the observed degradation pattern in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Results revealed that MFO could remove ≥ 90% of COD at ~ 90 min, whereas FO could eliminate ≥ 80% COD at ~ 120 min. Further, the bioflocculation technique was found to reduce the heavy metal contents such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, Cd and Pb by ≥ 60%. In the sequential treatment process, lignin, phenolic and colour contents were also found to be reduced by ~ 84% ~ 97% and ~ 96%, respectively. Again, the bioassay tests were performed to verify the toxicity reduction in the industrial effluent after the application of the sequential treatment process. Capillary electrophoresis was used for determining Belofors, which are used as optical bleaching agents for improving the whiteness of writing paper. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a modifier of capillary walls in the separation of water-soluble Belofors. An optimum buffer electrolyte for separating and determining Belofors was as follows: 0.5 mM sodium hydrogen phosphate, 12.2 mM sodium tetraborate, and 30 mM SDS; pH 9.1. Bleaching agents in 39 samples of paper manufactured in Russia, Finland, Sweden, France, the Czech Republic, and Austria were determined and characterized. Invasive species can be particularly disruptive when they intersect with organisms of conservation concern. Stabilizing the declining eastern migratory population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) is projected to require extensive habitat restoration across multiple land use sectors including metropolitan areas. Numerous conservation programs encourage urban citizens to plant gardens with milkweeds, the obligate larval host plants of the monarch. Here, we show that predation by Polistes dominula, an invasive paper wasp that is particularly abundant in urban settings, can turn such sites into ecological traps for monarch larvae. Polistes dominula was the predominant paper wasp seen foraging in central Kentucky pollinator gardens. In 120 observed encounters with monarch larvae on milkweeds in gardens, most second to fourth instars were killed, whereas most fifth instars escaped by thrashing or dropping. The wasps bit and carried off second instars whole, whereas third and fourth instar kills were first gutted, then processed and carried away piecemeal. Predation on sentinel larvae was much higher in urban gardens than in rural settings. The wasps exploited ornamental butterfly "hibernation boxes" in pollinator gardens as nesting habitat. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with high performance and low density are urgently needed with the rapid development of electronic communications. In this work, tuning solid–air interface of graphene paper was carried out to enhance multiple reflections of incident electromagnetic waves for high-performance EMI shielding. The large amount solid–air interface (57.8 m2 g−1) endowed the porous graphene paper with a high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 31.0 dB, 50% enhancement from its counterpart of solid graphene paper. This porous graphene paper also showed an ultralow density of 0.02 g cm−3, an 18.5-fold decrease from its counterpart of solid graphene paper. Moreover, the EMI SE of obtained graphene papers exhibited proportional relationship with their specific surface area, further confirming the vital role of solid–air interface in the enhancement of EMI shielding. This work quantitatively demonstrates the significance of solid–air interface area for enhancing the EMI shielding performance and proposes an efficient guideline for the design of high-performance and low-density EMI shielding materials. At the dawn of the flexible and wearable electronics age, the seek for new materials enabling the integration of complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology on flexible substrates, finds in low-dimensional materials (either 1D or 2D) extraordinary candidates. Here, we show that the main building blocks for digital electronics can be obtained by exploiting 2D materials like molybdenum disulfide, hexagonal boron nitride and 1D materials such as carbon nanotubes through the inkjet-printing technique. In particular, we show that the proposed approach enables the fabrication of logic gates and a basic sequential network on a flexible substrate such as paper, with a performance already comparable with mainstream organic technology. Pharmacists are expected to demonstrate their expertise in clinical practice and conduct research activities to generate new evidence. However, the factors promoting research activities among pharmacists remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the research activities of Japanese pharmacists through a questionnaire survey and examined the factors contributing to the promotion of research activities. A web-based questionnaire using Google Forms was disseminated across pharmacists working in community pharmacies, drugstores, hospitals, and clinics. The questionnaire included respondents' backgrounds, research activities, and research environments. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the factors promoting pharmacists' research activities, with experience in research paper acceptance as the objective variable. In total, 401 responses were included in the analysis. Of the respondents, 54.1% were hospital pharmacists, and 77.1% were pharmacists with > 5 years of pharmacist experience. Furthermore, 50.4% of the pharmacists had presented at conferences, and 22.2% had experience in research paper acceptance. The influential factors were "master's degree or higher," "number of affiliated academic societies," "acquisition of specialists/certified pharmacists," and "daily availability of a consultant for writing research papers." This study revealed the factors contributing to the promotion of research activities among pharmacists. We believe that our findings will help promote research among pharmacists. Osteoclasts are the primary target for osteoporosis drug development. Recent animal studies revealed the crucial roles of osteoblasts in regulating osteoclastogenesis and the longer lifespans of osteoclasts than previously thought with fission and recycling. However, existing culture platforms are limited to replicating these newly identified cellular processes. We report a demineralized bone paper (DBP)-based osteoblast culture and osteoclast assay platform that replicates osteoclast fusion, fission, resorption, and apoptosis with high fidelity and analytical power. An osteoid-inspired DBP supports rapid and structural mineral deposition by osteoblasts. Coculture osteoblasts and bone marrow monocytes under biochemical stimulation recapitulate osteoclast differentiation and function. The DBP-based bone model allows longitudinal quantitative fluorescent monitoring of osteoclast responses to bisphosphonate drug, substantiating significantly reducing their number and lifespan. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of humanizing the bone model. The DBP-based osteo assay platforms are expected to advance bone remodeling-targeting drug development with improved prediction of clinical outcomes. The effectiveness of two ways to reduce the vibration and sound emission of a high-pressure laminate plate has been investigated. It has been found that the inclusion of viscoelastic polymer polyvinyl acetate film in the laminate structure or constrained damping layer treatment based on polyvinyl acetate film and aluminum foil or plastic leads to a significant improvement in its vibroacoustic characteristics. The greatest reduction in vibration and sound emission was achieved by applying a coating with aluminum foil whose thickness was six times less than that of the damped laminate plate. This joint report from the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SIOT) and the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP) aims for a consensus around the scientific rationale and clinical strategy for the management of osteoporotic patients affected by periodontitis who are undergoing anti-resorptive (AR) therapy to manage the risk of the occurrence of a medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Osteoporosis and periodontitis are chronic diseases with a high prevalence in aging patients, and they share some of the same pathogenetic mechanisms based upon inflammation. Available evidence shows the relationship among osteoporosis, AR agents, periodontitis and implant therapy in relation to the incidence of MRONJ. Uncontrolled periodontitis may lead to tooth loss and to the need to replace teeth with dental implants. Tooth extraction and surgical dental procedures are recognized as the main risk factors for developing MRONJ in individuals taking AR therapy for osteometabolic conditions. Although the incidence of MRONJ in osteometabolic patients taking AR therapy may be as low as 0.9%, the increasing prevalence of osteoporosis and the high prevalence of periodontitis suggest that this potential complication should not be overlooked. Good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines are proposed that aim at a more integrated approach (prescriber, dentist, periodontist and dental hygienist) in the management of periodontitis patients undergoing AR therapy for osteometabolic disorders to reduce the risk of MRONJ. Dental professional and prescribers should educate patients regarding the potential risk associated with the long-term use of AR therapy and oral health behavior. Highlights: AR drugs such as bisphosphonates (BPs), denosumab (DNB) and romosozumab (RMB) are very effective in the treatment of osteoporosis and in the prevention of fragility bone fractures. Periodontitis is a widespread infective inflammatory disease that is the major cause of tooth loss, and it is strongly connected with other systemic diseases, including osteoporosis. MRONJ is a serious and rare complication associated with the use of AR drugs in osteoporotic patients. The reported incidence is rather low and ranges between 0.01 and 0.9%, but may be higher in the presence of comorbidities. Periodontitis and MRONJ share some risk factors, such as diabetes, smoking, steroids, cardiovascular diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. The risk of developing MRONJ in a case of successfully treated periodontitis is much lower than the risk of fragility fracture in a high-risk person such as one with a previous fracture. Oral and periodontal conditions should be assessed before starting an AR therapy, and local intra-oral inflammation should be brought under control. Periodontal therapy is effective at reducing the risk of teeth extraction and therefore the need for major bone reconstructive intervention and implant placement. Control of periodontal inflammation should be achieved and maintained over time in osteoporosis-affected patients treated with AR. Peri-implant diseases rather than dental implant placement may be considered a trigger for MRONJ; for this reason, periodontitis and peri-implant inflammatory disease control and the inclusion of patients in a supportive periodontal program are critical. AR therapy should not be discontinued or deferred by the dentist unless done in accordance with the prescriber. The suspension of BP therapy is not recommended on a routine basis, as BP binds to the skeletal sites and continue to be released for months or years after treatment, with a long tail effect on bone metabolism. DNB administration should not be withdrawn because the rebound effect may increase the risk of bone fractures. A therapeutic window in which to perform dento-alveolar surgical procedures is suggested. It is advisable to calibrate the timing of dental extraction and surgical procedures between the dentist and prescribers according to the oral condition, the general health condition, and the time and type of AR drugs used. A more integrated approach between prescriber, dentist, periodontist and dental hygienist should be encouraged, particularly in the management of periodontitis-affected patients who are taking AR drugs for osteometabolic disorders. We developed a paper-based colorimetric sensor for facile and cost-effective detection of Pb2+ in drinking and environmental water samples. The Pb2+ ion–selective optodes are fabricated by inkjet printing of ionophore, chromoionophore, and ion exchanger on cellulose paper. Pb2+ in water samples induces deprotonation of the pH chromoionophore and changes the optode color, which is acquired and analyzed by a smartphone. The paper-based optode without any plasticizer or polymer has a dynamic range and selectivity comparable to those of traditional optodes using PVC polymer and/or plasticizer. Furthermore, the response time of the plasticizer/polymer-free paper-based optode is much shorter than those of plasticized PVC-based optodes on paper and glass (5 min vs. 15 and 50 min). Moreover, the plasticizer/polymer-free optode preserves the water-wicking capability of porous cellulose paper, allowing for the design of pump-free microfluidic devices. Chloramine, a widely used disinfectant in drinking water, was found to be a strong and generic interference species for heavy metal ion detection via ion-selective optodes. A fully inkjet-printed lateral-flow paper-based device consisting of a sodium thiosulfate–based chloramine elimination zone and a plasticizer/polymer-free sensing zone was designed for Pb2+ detection in tap water disinfected by chloramine. The dynamic range of the Pb2+ sensor may be shifted from the current 10−6 to 10−5 M to lower concentrations by using stronger ionophores, but this work lays a foundation for the design of paper-based heavy metal ion sensors without detrimental interference from disinfectants. Carbon fiber paper (CFP) has been widely investigated as a gas diffusion layer for high-performance fuel cells, while the paper formation, one of the most important properties of CFP, has been rarely reported before owing to the lack of accurate characterization methods. Herein, using a 2D laboratory sensor, a quantitative analysis was conducted to comprehensively analyze CFP formation, carbon fiber (CF) flocs and their influencing factors. Within the study scope of this paper, improved paper formation was always accompanied with a smaller floc area and a lower ratio of large-size flocs for CFP prepared with the same length of CF. CF was too long negatively affected paper formation, as the look-through index rose from 282 (2 mm CF) to 940 (8 mm CF). Either using polyethylene oxide as a disperser or reducing the CF concentration could reduce the look-through index of the CFP (2 mm CF) to below 200. The crowding factor of the CF suspension was suggested to be no more than 5. In addition, improvement in CFP formation led to higher tensile strength and lower air permeability in CFP.
