This book presents multi-stage feedback control designs for the system with multi-time-scale behaviour both in the continuous time domain and discrete-time domain. Multi-time-scale systems have widely separated clusters of eigenvalues, making the system matrices ill-conditioned. Due to this the direct design of a feedback controller and reduced- or full-order observers for such systems is a challenging task. Hence, the feedback controllers and observers are designed in multiple design stages, i.e. two-stage design for the two-time-scale system and three-stage design for the three-time-scale system. In this book, multi-stage feedback controller and observer designs are proposed for the three-time-scale system to reduce offline and online computational efforts. The applicability of these methods is demonstrated by simulating practical systems like a coal-fired power plant and a nuclear power plant. This book also discusses the design of multi-stage feedback controllers in discrete time. The design of state feedback control for a multi-time-scale system with a lower sampling rate fails to capture information in the fastest (very fast) and fast states. While sampling at a higher rate increases computation time. Thus, the use of single-rate sampling for such systems is unsuitable. Therefore, multi-rate state feedback controllers are designed for the multi-time-scale system, in which slow, fast, and very fast states are sampled at different sampling rates. As slow, fast and very fast states are the decoupled and internal states of the original system, these are estimated by the sequential multi-stage observers. Applications of these multirate designs to the numerical examples are demonstrated and simulations are compared with single-rate sampling methods. The methods suggested in this book result in considerable savings in online and offline computations, reduction in design complexity, and improvement in robustness and closed-loop performance. This book can be beneficial to mathematicians, scientists, researchers and practicing engineers working in this area.

This thesis highlights the development and analysis of multiple neutrino detectors deployed to the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as part of the COHERENT experiment. It includes a preliminary measurement of the neutrino-induced neutron cross section on lead, and analysis that led to the first inclusive electron-neutrino charged-current measurement on iodine. These results add to the small number of inelastic neutrino-nucleus cross sections measured in this energy range, which are useful for understanding supernova and solar neutrino detection sensitivity. Additionally, it discusses preliminary work for and design of COHERENT's ton-scale NaI coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) detector, currently being deployed to the SNS. Finally, it includes information on a campaign to measure the nuclear recoil quenching factor of NaI using multiple crystals, attempting to resolve inconsistencies with existing measurements.

In 1971, psychologist Philip Zimbardo ran the now famous Stanford prison experiment to show that prison could make normal people behave in pathological ways. Based on the first thorough investigation in the archives of the experiment and on interviews with about half of its participants, this book shows that the Stanford prison experiment is far from being scientific. In particular, the guards knew what results were expected from them, they were trained and supervised by the experimenters, and they were following a schedule and a set of rules written by the experimenters. The experimenters deceived the guards and made them believe they were not subjects. They also borrowed many elements from a previous student experiment without disclosing this information in their reports. The prisoners were not allowed to leave the experiment at will, and they were conditioned by the experimenters. The mock prison situation was unrealistic. Most participants did not forget they were participating in an experiment, and many responded to demand characteristics. The data was not collected properly. And the conclusions were pre-written according to non-academic aims. This book goes beyond the experiment to provide ample background and context, in order to understand how the experiment was planned, financed, recorded, and divulged in the press and within the academic. It discusses also the role played by Philip Zimbardo in the trial of one of the guards of Abu Ghraib, as well as the impact of mass media on science, the debates between personal psychology and social psychology, and the specific nature of cold war social science.

Automatic industrial alarm systems play a crucial role in alerting operators to abnormalities, such as high vessel levels, that could lead to unsafe conditions if left unaddressed. While contemporary alarm systems can be plagued with issues like nuisance alarms, recent academic research has introduced advanced methodologies, like Markov chain theory and Bayesian estimation, to optimize alarm parameters and enhance system performance. By integrating these theoretical advancements into practical applications, the goal is to develop intelligent industrial alarm systems that leverage historical data and process knowledge to predict and prevent alarm floods, ultimately ensuring safer and more efficient plant operations.

This open access book describes the nondestructive assay techniques that are used for the measurement of nuclear material (primarily uranium and plutonium) for nuclear material accountancy purposes. It is a substantial revision to the so-called PANDA manual that has been a standard reference since its publication in 1991. The book covers the origin and interactions of gamma rays and neutrons as they affect nuclear measurements and also describes the theory and practice of calorimetry. The book gives a description of many instruments based on these techniques that are applied in the field. Although the basic physics has not changed since PANDA was first published, the last thirty years have seen many advances in analysis methods, instrumentation, and applications. The basic descriptions of the origin and interactions of radiation have been updated and include newer references. There have been extensive revisions of the description of gamma detection methods, attenuation correction procedures, and analysis methods, including for the measurement of uranium enrichment and the determination of plutonium isotopic composition. Extensive revisions and additions have also been made to the description of neutron detectors and to the explanation of neutron coincidence techniques. The chapter on neutron multiplicity techniques is a new addition to this edition. The applications of gamma and neutron techniques have been completely overhauled to remove obsolete systems and to include many current applications. The values of, and references to, nuclear data have been updated. This updated edition is an essential reference for academic researchers and practitioners in the field. This is an open access book.
