Laser ablation offers cleaning method for historical and art works effectively. Difference between ablation threshold of contamination layer and the surface yields to remove contaminants from surface without detriment to historical material. In particular, lasers with ultrashort pulse duration are very convenient for brittle historical papers, fibers of which should be intact after cleaning treatment. Since duration of laser irradiation and material interaction is very short, the possibility of damage to the paper is very low. One of the other crucial issues after paper cleaning treatment is color variation on the surface. Authentic color of the historical paper has to be preserved after the procedure. In this paper, we present results of paper cleaning via femtosecond (fs) laser running at a wavelength of 1030 nm. In the first stage of this experimental study, we determined optimum laser parameters on artificially soiled and aged paper samples, then cleaned a handwritten manuscript with ‘sizing’. In calligraphy, ornamentation and miniature arts, sizing is applied on paper as a protective layer which increases strength of paper and renders it more useful. Papers with sizing have been prevalently used in Islamic or Ottoman culture. We observed that after laser irradiation, artificial soling layer is effectively removed, while original color of the subs-layers did not alter. We used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine fiber integrity, and determined that the sizing layer was not removed when optimized parameters were used, thus the fibers were not damaged.

This technical paper describes the requirements to effectively use thermal imaging as a means of monitoring rotating machine components in a paper machine. The present efforts are focused mainly on monitoring polymer-covered rolls in paper machine calenders, but the studies will be expanded in the future to monitoring the temperature profiles of paper machine press fabrics and press belts in shoe presses. The main challenges in these areas are the high speeds of the target surfaces, obtaining adequate temperature difference resolution at relatively low surface temperatures and challenging environmental conditions. Adaptive triggering is discussed as a synchronization method for obtaining an adequate number of images from the target. Also some image processing techniques, test results and required qualities of infrared camera technology are presented.

Plastic passive matrix (PM) and active matrix (AM) electronic paper displays (EPDs) have been prepared by SiPix's Microcup® roll-to-roll manufacturing processes using ITO/PET films. The Microcup® displays have shown outstanding environmental stability and excellent physico-mechanical properties such as scratch, impact and flexure resistances even in high temperature and humidity conditions. A PMEPD recently prepared on inexpensive row-and-column patterned ITO/PET films has shown a contrast ratio of >10, ta n 15 V. More than 8 levels of grayscale with outstanding bistability have been demonstrated by either pulse width or pulse count modulation. No noticeable degradation of the mid-tone images has been observed even after the power was turned off for more than 5 days. Moreover, the electro-optical responses, particularly the threshold voltage and gamma of the PMEPDs remain essentially the same within a wide range (20-60°C) of operation temperature.

Many paper mills use ultrasonic techniques to measure the Tensile Stiffness Index, TSI, of the paper sheet. They then assume that the TSI value is the same as the fibre orientation anisotropy. This is true if the paper is allowed to dry without any internal tension or elongation, but does not apply to paper manufactured in a paper machine. The paper machine introduces tension and elongation as soon as the fibre is placed on the forming fabric. These factors increase through the press section and are accentuated in the drying section. In order to uniquely measure the fibre orientation anisotropy on the surfaces, the proposed method uses replicas of both paper surfaces to produce a laser diffraction pattern. The obtained pattern reveals an elliptical shape, which is related to the fibre orientation anisotropy of the paper surface. By measuring the ellipticity of the diffraction pattern and the deviation with respect to the machine direction, one can quantify the fibre orientation distribution. Different papers from the bench market have been successfully tested with the developed system. This article describes the new developed optical system and its innovative capabilities in the field to produce maps of the fibre orientation of a complete paper sheet surface. A selection of the obtained results to prove its feasibility is also presented.

Rapid and inexpensive virus detection and quantification at the point -of -care is of paramount importance for HIV management in resource -limited settings . Here, we report on an eas y-to-fabricate, cellulose paper -based microchip with printed graphene -modified electrode s for rapid detection of HIV -1 through electrical sensing . We evaluated the effect of electrode material and geometry on the performance of the microchip to detect serially diluted , electrically conductive samples . We evaluated the optimized microchip with HIV -spiked samples . 1. Introduction Effective, rapid , and inexpensive detection of virus es in biological samples at the point -of -care (POC) is an urgent need for infectious disease detection and treatment monitoring in resource -limited settings . Of particular interest is the detection and quantificatio n of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in fingerprick volume s of biological samples at the POC for early detection of the disease and treatment monitoring in developing countries . According to UNAIDS , 35.3 million people are HIV infected globally , of whic h 25.0 million of them (equivalent to 70% of total HIV patients) live in sub -Saharan African countries [1]. T he t otal medical expenditure for HIV/AIDS in 20 12 was 18.9 b US $ and it is estimated that the annual expense will reach 22 -24 b US $ by the end of 2015 [1] . Expanding access globally to antiretroviral therapy (A RT) has been highly effective in reducing mortality in developing countries, however, a significant percentage of HIV -infected individuals do not yet receive ART , and those who have access to the treatment may not receive an effective therapy due to limited access to the appropriate treatment monitoring assays [2, 3] . Current rapid HIV tests, including OraQuick HIV test, lack the ability to detect HIV infection in the early stage as they d etect antibodies utilizing the principles of enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and lateral flow test (LFT) . Further, these tests cannot detect virological failure that is critical for treatment monitoring and diagnosis of ART failure . Antibodies against HIV -1 start to appear after 3 -8 weeks from the initial infection . HIV -infected individuals have the potential to be substantial sources for transmission of the infection at the acute stage, when maximum vir al replication takes place . Although nucle ic acid tests (NAT) provide sensitive and accurate results for HIV detection and viral load measurement, these assays are laboratory -based, expensive, time consuming, and require skilled personnel [3]. Microfluidics has shown great promise in developing diagnostic assays for disease detection and treatment monitoring at the POC [3, 4] . Electrical sensing also provides robust , sensitive, and rapid detection of analytes in biological samples without the need for bulky equipment in optical -based sensing mechanisms [5 -11] . We have previously shown that electrical sensing modalit ies can be integrated with microfluidics to detect viruses in HIV -spiked samples [5, 10] . HIV was captured and isolated from samples off -chip using magnetic beads conjugated with ant i gp -120 antibody , and captured viruses were detected on -chip through electrical sensing of viral lysate . Here, for the first time, we present a cellulose paper -based microchip with printed graphene/silver electrodes for on -chip HIV capture and detection u sing electrical sensing of viral lysate.

Carbon nanotube paper (CNP) based multi-functional composite material is an attractive candidate for deicing, flame retardancy, thermal insulation and lighting strike protection due to the excellent conductivity, light weight and thin dimensions. In this article, multi-functional carbon nanotube paper was fabricated successfully by using commercial carbon nanotube. As a deicing composite material, carbon nanotube was used directly without pretreatment in fabricating carbon nanotube paper. The conductivities of the carbon nanotube paper and deicing composite were 77.8S/cm and 64.9S/ respectively. Electrical heating and deicing performance were test by infrared camera with deicing time less than 220s and 450s to melt a certain amount of ice under different ambient condition. CNT was grafted by zirconium (IV) butoxide solution and dimethyl dichlorosilicane to form co-oligomers on the tube surface while oligomers decompose under a certain temperature to develop an inorganic layer of silicon zirconium oxide. The oxidizing temperature of carbon nanotube increases more than 20°C and the weight loss rate decreases 20% than the untreated carbon nanotube. Lightning protection material required high electro conductivity, due to the utmost high current in a short time. Therefore, silver nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of carbon nanotube with the diameter around 100nm. The conductivity increased sharply from 84s/cm to1756s/cm with the mount of 5.9wt% Ag of the modified carbon nanotube paper because the silver nanoparticles deposited on the surface. In addition, the silver modified also can be used as thermal insulation material decreasing the infrared radiation.

In this work we have investigated the use of laser sintering of different ink-jet printed nano-particle links (NPIs) on paper substrates. Laser sintering is shown to offer a fast and non-destructive way to produce paper based printed electronics. A continuous wave fiber laser source at 1064 nm is used and evaluated in combination with a galvo-scanning mirror system. A conductivity in order of 2.16 * 107 S/m is reached for the silver NPI structures corresponding to nearly 35 % conductivity compared to that of bulk silver and this is achieved without any observable damage to the paper substrate.

This work addresses the study of repeatability of an optical laser system, previously implemented by our research team, for characterization of the fiber distribution and mass density of two paper samples with different characteristics. In the experiment that has been carried out in the current work, both paper samples were laser scanned by the system on a total of 16 times (4 times per day in 4 different days). The data acquired and registered during the experimental work, associated to both tested samples, were then processed and the obtained results showed that the optical system is precise.

Ink jet printability is rapidly becoming a requirement for all multipurpose office papers. These papers must have an optimized balance of properties so they can perform equally well under various printing methods such as xerography, ink jet, and thermal imaging. The office paper of today truly must be a multipurpose copy paper capable of providing good toner adhesion as well as controlled absorption of aqueous ink jet solutions. The demand for ink jet paper is increasing rapidly. The global market for cut-size ink jet papers will expand to nearly 1.4 million tons by the year 2000. By that time the global market for all cut-size multipurpose plain printing papers will grow to nearly twenty million tons. The ink jet printing process places a large volume of aqueous ink on the surface of a substrate. The manner in which the substrate handles that volume of ink determines in large part the quality of the print. Multipurpose office papers are composed chiefly of cellulose fibers, inorganic fillers, and chemical additives. All of these components affect the quality of the sheet as an ink jet substrate. The particle morphology, surface area, and surface treatment of PCC fillers affect the ink jet printability of multipurpose office papers. A methodology has been developed to digitize images from photographic color paper (reflection prints) and store the spectral information as a function of the three dye density basis functions inherent to the paper film type. The result is a highly accurate digitization of the spectral information at each spatial pixel that can be digitally stored with very little additional storage space over conventional RGB-type methodologies.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. IR monitoring is a basic tool for quality control and predictive maintenance in the paper industry. There are also other possible interests, e.g. measurements of temperature profiles of high speed production lines. The first possibility to use IR for the above mentioned use appears to be applications of glass heat treatment in on line production. At this time there is a lot of interest to be able to measure temperature profiles from a fast moving surface (e.g. in paper machines) with velocities like 10 - 20 m/s. Normal low speed line scanners typically give scanning speed of 50 Hz which in this case means 20 m/s/50 Hz equals 40 cm resolution. The obtained resolution is not normally high enough. To have more accurate vision from the studied surface IR camera line scanning was proposed to be a solution with line scanning frequencies of 8000 Hz which would provide resolution of 20 m/s/8000 Hz equals 0.25 cm between surface points. It is a well-known fact that all undesired frequencies in paper transfer systems disturb the uniform paper drying process which in some cases is the basic reason for low quality coating or even broken paper line. The possibility to detect these drying problems with IR frequency analysis will give a new way to control the paper drying process. With IR analysis it is possible to get information about temperature distributions along the paper track. Using a well established frequency analysis as a tool, the error estimations are obtained. In most cases an open-roll image from paper track is very desirable because there are no existing wide area measurement systems for this purpose. The expression 'Plain' paper was coined in the early days of electrophotography to distinguish the capabilities of the new dry toner based photocopying process which did not require a sensitized or special coated paper to produce an image. Currently 'Plain' paper is considered in the electronic printing industry, to be any uncoated paper, usually of the type used in office photocopying applications. It is assumed that all 'Plain' papers are identical or at least equivalent in their properties such that all papers will give equivalent print quality performance. Due to the wide availability and low price of 'Plain' papers, it is also considered desirable by vendors of electronic marking processes, that their technology be capable of producing good image quality on 'Plain' paper. The chemical and physical differences which can occur among 'Plain' papers are discussed with respect to the specific image quality and engine reliability requirements of the major nonimpact electronic marking technologies, including electrophotography and laser printing, electrographic and ionographic processes, thermal transfer and ink jet. Paper properties of interest include, smoothness, surface energy, electrical resistivity, porosity and aqueous and nonaqueous liquid adsorption. Color printing has added additional requirements to paper quality, if good image quality is to be achieved and maintained. Given the apparently conflicting requirements for some of the electronic marking technologies, it will be a challenge to define a single grade of paper which will produce optimum print quality for all electronic printing processes.© (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Paper based composite with semiconductor nanomaterial is a fascinating orgnic-inorganic hybrid composite that has improved properties of flexibility, biocompatibility and functionality. Cellulose Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) is a kind of paper electric device. To improve functionality of EAPap, ZnO is used as hybrid inorganic composition. Cellulose- ZnO hybrid nanocomposite (CEZOHN) is fabricated by seeding and growing ZnO on cellulose film with a simple chemical reaction. CEZOHN reveals not only electrical, eletromechanical behavior but also photoelectrical behavior. This paper reports specially photo-response and sensitivity of CEZOHN under several light source: UV light, sun and fluorescent light. The fabrication process is briefly introduced, and induced voltage, induced current under light source are investigated. Also, the ZnO effect of CEZOHN and its mechanism is studied and its possibility of application as photosensor, photodiode, photovoltaic device will be discussed.

The appearance of translucent materials is strongly affected by bulk (or sub surface) scattering. For paper and carton board, lateral light propagation and angle-resolved reflection have been studied extensively but treated separately. The present work aims at modelling the BSSRDF of turbid media in order to study the angular variation of the reflectance as function of the lateral propagation within the medium. Monte Carlo simulations of the spatial- and angle resolved reflectance of turbid media are performed for different scattering and absorption coefficients, phase functions and surface topographies representative for uncoated paper grades. The angle-resolved radiance factor of turbid media is found to be function of the lateral light propagation within the substrate and both the reflected radiance factor and the fluorescence emission are found to be clearly non- Lambertian, although the latter clearly depends on the light absorption at the excitation wavelength. It is also suggested that the modelling of uncoated paper should not include surface scattering. The findings impact on the appearance of turbid media at different angles and make measurements of the lateral light propagation dependent on the instrument geometry.

This report describes a method for the creation and automatic content verification of low-cost self-verifiable paper documents. The image of an original document is decomposed to symbol templates and their corresponding locations. The resulting data is further compressed and encrypted, and encoded in custom designed high-capacity color barcodes. The original image and barcodes are printed on the same paper to form a self-verifiable authentic document. During content verification, the paper document is scanned to obtain the barcodes and target image. The original image is reconstructed from data extracted from the barcodes, which is then registered with and compared to the target image. The verification is carried out hierarchically from the entire image down to word and symbol levels. For symbol level comparison, multiple types of features and shape matching are utilized in a cascade. The proposed verification method is inexpensive, robust and fast. Evaluation on 216 character tables and 102 real documents achieved greater than 99% alteration detection rate and less than 1% false positives at the word/symbol level.

In this work, two optical systems previously designed and implemented by our research team, were used to enable the surface and bulk inspection of the ink-paper interaction by image analysis. Basically, the first system works by ejecting micro-liter ink drops onto the papers surface while monitoring the event under three different views over time. The second system is used for sectioning the paper samples through their thickness and to simultaneously acquire images of the ink penetration of each section cut. In the performed experiments, three black inks of different brands and a common copy paper were chosen, used, and tested with the two developed optical systems. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out at the surface level and in the bulk of the paper. In terms of conclusions, it was shown that the three tested ink-paper combinations revealed very distinct characteristics.

There are several parameters, which influence the characteristics of the final printed colors in digital printing. One of the most important one is the substrate (paper). In the present study, the effect of uncoated papers on the laser printed colors was investigated. For this purpose, three kinds of paper with the same grammage value of 80 and different whiteness and texture were selected. The effect of paper on the printer's reproducibility, light-fastness, color gamut and colorimetric characteristics of the final printed samples were studied for a Canon Laser Printer LBP-5050. It was found out that, the reproducibility of the printer is statistically dependent on the paper's type. The average of color change via exposing light is between 1.3 and 1.8 for different papers. The color difference caused by paper variation illustrates the effect of paper on the final printed colors. The texture properties of the papers were quantified with Edge Frequency technique as an appropriate texture analysis tool. A defined correlation between texture changes and color differences was obtained. Furthermore, the whiteness of the papers clearly affected the final printed colors.

The first thermal paper technology was developed in the 1930s. Since then, thermal recording systems have branched into two main groups, two-component systems and heat-transfer systems. In the 1960s, the leuco dye system was developed by NCR. This type of system has been used mainly in thermal recording systems. The leuco dye system however has some drawbacks such as poor image stability and an artificial texture. In a recent development, a compound with an epoxy functional group was added to the thermal sensitive layer of a leuco dye thermal paper to obtain good stability. A special overcoat layer gives the product the texture of plain paper. In addition to this product, other special thermal papers have been developed, such as two-color thermal paper, IR readable thermal paper, high resolution thermal paper, and translucent thermal paper.© (1993) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. A multilayer Paper Analytical Device (PAD) is provided for detection of at least two chemical components indicative of a low quality pharmaceutical or dietary supplement product. A method for detection of at least two chemical components indicative of a low quality pharmaceutical or dietary supplement product is also provided that employs a multilayer PAD. A kit is provided for detection of at least two chemical components indicative of a low quality pharmaceutical or dietary supplement product that includes a multilayer PAD and instructions for using the kit.

Angle-resolved light scattering (ARLS) was used to investigate the roughness of coatings on glossy paper. Angular spectra were measured for laser light scattered from several glossy paper samples and from uncoated paper. These spectra are compared to those calculated using the Beckmann model of a random surface that is isotropic and rough in two dimensions. Such a surface is characterized by its rms roughness and autocorrelation function, which are determined from surface profiles measured with a stylus instrument. There is very good agreement between the measured and the computed ARLS spectra. The surfaces are too rough to produce a specular beam large enough to provide an accurate value of the rms roughness, but ARLS provides information about the coating roughness when the measured spectra are cornpared to computed ones.

The coating color for the direct thermal paper basically consists of the leuco dye, the cobr developer and the sensitizer. Blacking dyes to be used for thermal papers call for other practicable properties than the tone, such as storage stability, thermal sensitivity and white background. Since no universally accepted theory in choosing proper developer and sensitizer is available, however, selection will have to be conducted on the designer's experience. Such practical considerations as the stability of the recorded image and matching with the particular machine to be used for are important beside the chemical considerations.

In the recent times, cellulose-based Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) has been investigated to have electro-mechanical coupling and piezoelectric effects which are promising characteristics for a smart material. In this paper, the effects of electrodes of EAPap are investigated for vibration energy harvesting. Although piezopolymers have smaller value of electro-mechanical coupling constants as compared to the piezoceramics, but are very flexible, which motivates to use these materials as potential media for flexible energy harvesting. Cellulose based Electro-active papers are deposited with different metal electrodes like aluminum, gold and silver. The fabricated samples are tested with aluminum cantilever beam under an input excitation. The effects of area of electrodes are also investigated by comparing the output voltage at the different area of electrodes ranging from 400mm2 to 1200mm2. EAPap cantilever are tested at lowest resonant frequency and under varying acceleration amplitude to maximize the output voltage. From the experimental results, it is concluded that the potential of EAPap as a flexible energy harvester are very promising.

Many infectious diseases, as well as some cancers, that affect global health are most accurately diagnosed through nucleic acid amplification and detection. There is a great need to simplify nucleic acid-based assay systems for use in global health in low-resource settings as well as in settings that do not have convenient access to laboratory staff and equipment such as doctors’ offices and home care settings. In developing countries, unreliable electric power, inadequate supply chains, and lack of maintenance for complex diagnostic instruments are all common infrastructure shortfalls. Many elements of instrument-free, disposable, nucleic acid amplification assays have been demonstrated in recent years. However, the problem of instrument-free,1 low-cost, temperature-controlled chemical heating remains unsolved. In this paper we present the current status and results of work towards developing disposable, low-cost, temperature-controlled heaters designed to support isothermal nucleic acid amplification assays that are integrated with a two-dimensional paper network. Our approach utilizes the heat generated through exothermic chemical reactions and controls the heat through use of engineered phase change materials to enable sustained temperatures required for nucleic acid amplification. By selecting appropriate exothermic and phase change materials, temperatures can be controlled over a wide range, suitable for various isothermal amplification methods, and maintained for over an hour at an accuracy of +/- 1°C.

Lateral flow tests (LFTs) are well-suited for rapid point-of-care testing in low resource settings. The wicking action of the paper strip moves the sample and reagents through the device without a need for pumps, but LFTs are typically limited to tests that can be carried out in a single fluidic step. The materials from LFTs can be reconfigured to create paper networks that automatically carry out multi-step fluidic operations, while retaining the same easy-to-use format as a conventional LFT. Here, we describe basic principles of wicking and system-level behavior of paper networks by analogy to electrical circuits. We describe key design principles for a previously-developed 2D paper network (2DPN) and introduce an alternative linear paper network (Pseudo-1DPN) that takes advantage of system-level behavior to perform clean sequential fluid delivery while reducing device running time.

Conventional thermal paper utilizes an electron-donating colorless dye and an electron- accepting developer which react to give a colored image. To improve the image stability, various methods have been proposed. However, there has been no study on the prediction of the image stability. We found that under a defined condition of the thermal acceleration test, the Arrhenius Plot of the fading gives a straight line, and the predicted value gives good coincidence with the value obtained by actual aging. Wet paper code is a complex model which mainly used in the field of image coding. This paper is based on the wet paper code model and human visual system, and constructs a new wet paper code steganographic method. According to the regional complexity and other characteristics of the host image, the secret bits are adaptively embedded into wavelet coefficients of image subbands with wet paper code. Secret information receivers do not need to know the specific method of secret writing, just do a simple matrix multiplication operation and can extract the secret information, which in many ways to improve the security of the steganographic algorithm. The experiments show that the method has good visual invisibility and resistance of active steganalysis attacks.

Over the last decade DigitalGlobe (DG) has built and launched a series of remote sensing satellites with steadily increasing capabilities: QuickBird, WorldView-1 (WV-1), and WorldView-2 (WV-2). Today, this constellation acquires over 2.5 million km2 of imagery on a daily basis. This paper presents the configuration and performance capabilities of each of these satellites, with emphasis on the unique spatial and spectral capabilities of WV-2. WV-2 employs high-precision star tracker and inertial measurement units to achieve a geolocation accuracy of 5 m Circular Error, 90% confidence (CE90). The native resolution of WV-2 is 0.5 m GSD in the panchromatic band and 2 m GSD in 8 multispectral bands. Four of the multispectral bands match those of the Landsat series of satellites; four new bands enable novel and expanded applications. We are rapidly establishing and refreshing a global database of very high resolution (VHR) 8-band multispectral imagery. Control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) on both WV-1 and WV-2 improve collection capacity and provide the agility to capture multi-angle sequences in rapid succession. These capabilities result in a rich combination of image features that can be exploited to develop enhanced monitoring solutions. Algorithms for interpretation and analysis can leverage: 1) broader and more continuous spectral coverage at 2 m resolution; 2) textural and morphological information from the 0.5 m panchromatic band; 3) ancillary information from stereo and multi-angle collects, including high precision digital elevation models; 4) frequent revisits and time-series collects; and 5) the global reference image archives. We introduce the topic of creative fusion of image attributes, as this provides a unifying theme for many of the papers in this WV-2 Special Session.

At present, the most technology of counting money is to use the money counter in financial fields. The paper presents a new method for automatic counting paper money which is based on image processing technology. Firstly, the paper money image is acquired by CCD. After analyzing the feature of image, we find that in Cr-space the edge of each paper money is enhanced. Then we use the north-west sobel operator for filtering and north sobel operator for detecting edge. Although the image-processed better highlight the edge of each paper money, the edge is rough and its variance is high. It is hardly to threshold the image for getting the single-pixel edge linked. After Different segmentation algorithm was been used for deriving the edge of paper money, we find the Two-dimensional Histogram θ-division algorithm is suitable for our purpose. The experimental result is proved satisfied. The detecting rate reached 100% in controlled environment for RMB. However, if we want to detect other kinds of paper money such as dollar, there also have several problems to be solved.

Understanding the properties of paper fibers and paper fiber bonds can be really significant in improving the quality of paper. The problem in gathering measurement data from individual paper fibers is the lack of reliable and efficient research instruments. Also, without automation the yield of experiments will be low and the results will depend on the skills of the operator. This paper presents an image-based method to automatically detect the endpoints of paper fibers. The method will be utilized in automatic control of a novel and tailor-made paper fiber manipulation and measurement platform. This paper reports a remotely-driven electro-active paper (EAPap) actuator by modulated microwaves. So far we have demonstrated a remotely driven EAPap actuator by means of rectenna and control circuit. The rectenna consists of dipole antenna and rectifying circuit, which converts microwave to dc power. Once microwaves are incident on the dipole rectenna, it converts microwaves into a dc power and the control circuit feeds the power to the EAPap actuator by alternating it so as to produce a bending motion of the EAPap actuator. However, due to the power consumption of the control circuit, the remotely-driven actuator system requires more dc power to activate the control circuit. Thus, we propose a remotely-driven EAPap actuator that does not require the control circuit. Instead of the control circuit, microwaves are modulated with the control signal, and by rectifying the modulated microwaves with the rectenna, the control signal can be regenerated for activating the EAPap actuator. Detailed modulated microwave, rectenna design, fabrication, characterization and the actuation of rectenna-EAPap by modulated microwave are explained.

Haptic is one of well-considered device which is suitable for demanding virtual reality applications such as medical equipment, mobile devices, the online marketing and so on. Nowadays, many of concepts for haptic devices have been suggested to meet the demand of industries. Cellulose has received much attention as an emerging smart material, named as electro-active paper (EAPap). The EAPap is attractive for mobile haptic devices due to its unique characteristics in terms of low actuation power, suitability for thin devices and transparency. In this paper, we suggest a new concept of haptic actuator with the use of cellulose EAPap. Its performance is evaluated depending on various actuation conditions. As a result, cellulose electrostatic force actuator shows a large output displacement and fast response, which is suitable for mobile haptic devices.

Recently, there has been a surge of activity in the development of next-generation transparent thin film transistors for use in applications such as electronic paper and flexible organic light emitting diode panels. Amongst the transparent conducting oxides attracting the most interest at present are Amorphous Oxide Semiconductors (AOS) based on ZnO because they exhibit enhanced electron mobility (μ), superior capacity for processability in air and improved thermodynamic stability compared with conventional covalent amorphous semiconductors and existing AOS. Moreover, they give excellent performance when fabricated at relatively low temperature and can readily be made in large area format. Thus, they are projected to resolve the trade-off between processing temperature and device performance and thereby allow fabrication on inexpensive heatsensitive substrates. For the moment, however, an undesireable post-deposition annealing step at a temperature of about 200°C is necessary in order to obtain suitable electrical and optical properties. This paper demonstrates the possibility of directly engineering amorphous ZnO with relatively high conductiviy at room temperature on paper and mylar substrates using pulsed laser deposition.

Lasers can provide a precious tool to conservation process due to their accuracy and the controlled energy they deliver, especially to fragile organic material such as paper. The current study concerns laser modification such as paper cleaning, initially of test papers artificially soiled and then of an original book of the early 20 th Century. The test objects were A4 copier paper, newspaper, and paper Whatman No.1056. During the experiments, ink of a pen, pencil and ink from a stamp was mechanically employed on each paper surface. Laser cleaning was applied using a Q-switched Nd:YAG operating at 532 nm and CO 2 laser at 10.6 μm for various fluences. The experimental results were presented by using optical microscopy. Eventually, laser cleaning of ink was performed to a book of 1934, by choosing the best conditions and parameters from cleaning the test samples, like Nd:YAG laser operating at 532 nm.

Roughness of paper surface is an important parameter in paper manufacturing. Surface roughness measurement is one of the central measurement problems in paper industry. Surfaces are often coated and the amount of coating and method of application used depends on the roughness of the base paper [1], [2]. At the moment, air leak methods are standardized and employed in paper industry as roughness rating methods. Air leak rate between measured paper surface and a specified flat land is recorded by using specialized pneumatic devices under laboratory conditions. Such a measurement closely corresponds to the roughness of a surface, the greater the air leak the rougher the surface. Air leak methods are rather easy to apply to paper and give stable results, although they measure roughness indirectly, need laboratory conditions, and thus unsuitable for on-line use. To measure real topography of paper surface, it is scanned with mechanical or optical profilometers. These methods provide accurate information on surface topography, but also demand laboratory conditions. In our work, present a method of measure based in the analysis of the texture of speckle pattern on the surface. The image formed by speckle in the paper surface is considered as a texture, and therefore texture analysis methods are suitable for the characterization of paper surface. The results are contrasted to air leak methods, optical profilometers (confocal microscopy), and fringe projection.

This paper presents an algorithm called CIPDEC (Content Integrity of Printed Documents using Error Correction), which identifies any modifications made to a printed document. CIPDEC uses an error correcting code for accurate detection of addition/deletion of even a few pixels. A unique advantage of CIPDEC is that it works blind - it does not require the original document for such detection. Instead, it uses fiducial marks and error correcting code parities. CIPDEC is also robust to paper-world artifacts like photocopying, annotations, stains, folds, tears and staples. Furthermore, by working at a pixel level, CIPDEC is independent of language, font, software, and graphics that are used to create paper documents. As a result, any changes made to a printed document can be detected long after the software, font, and graphics have fallen out of use. The utility of CIPDEC is illustrated in the context of tamper-proofing of printed documents and ink extraction for form-filling applications.

In order to maintain the normal running of economy in China, anti-counterfeiting detection of paper currency has been an important technology in the coinage company and the bank, but the detection using spectrum for Chinese paper currency anti-counterfeiting has not been applied in China. A real-time detection method, with broad spectrum including ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, is proposed in this paper, which achieves the purpose of anti-counterfeiting by using anti-fake properties of paper currency's coating surface, through different lights stimulation the full spectrum light irradiation on currency surface, with its reflection spectrum detected by spectrometer. The proposed method has such advantages as high technology, high detection precision and easy to identify, and has been applied to a practical system, which satisfies the real-time requirement.

Strong demand exists for a non-contacting paper caliper measurement which can be used as an input to a paper thickness control system. Caliper sensors requiring sheet contact suffer from errors related to dirt or coating build up and from high maintenance costs related to wear. These sensors can also damage the product by picking holes and marking sheets. Details of an on-line measurement device which employs two opposed laser displacement sensors and an inductive displacement sensor are presented. The sheet is held perpendicularly to the sensors with a Coanda air clamp. Dust and temperature control features which enable the sensor to operate reliably in an industrial environment are discussed. Results of production trials of this sensor are presented. Sub-micron profile agreement to lab and contacting caliper measurements has been demonstrated on light sheets. Results are presented of measurements on a wide range of paper grades from coated and uncoated light sheets to coated board.

Online measurement of paper thickness profile is essential in paper production. For decades paper thickness has been measured online with sensors that are contacting the web on both sides. In 2005 a new optical online paper thickness gauge was introduced which only contacts the web on the other side. The sensor is based on a laser triangulation sensor and a magnetic sensor, and it determines the paper thickness from the difference of the two measurements. For calibration of the two sensors, a robust concept has been developed which utilizes the measured object and takes place in the measuring environment so that the calibration is automatically adjusted to the current measuring circumstances. More importantly, with the presented method the non-linearity of the laser sensor is cancelled enabling the measurement of the thickness profile shape with an accuracy much better than that of the laser sensor. Profile accuracy of 0.5 μm (2σ) has become normal while the measuring range is often several hundreds of microns and the measuring distance to the paper web 1.0-1.5 mm with a laser sensor having linearity of ±2 μm.

In this paper we report the use of a sheet of cellulose fiber-based paper as the dielectric layer used in oxide based semiconductor thin film field-effect transistors (FETs). In this new approach we are using the cellulose fiber-based paper in an "interstrate" structure since the device is build on both sides of the cellulose sheet. Such hybrid FETs present excellent operating characteristics such as high channel saturation mobility (>30 cm 2 /Vs), drain-source current on/off modulation ratio of approximately 10 4 , near-zero threshold voltage, enhancement n-type operation and sub-threshold gate voltage swing of 0.8 V/decade. The cellulose fiber-based paper FETs characteristics have been measured in air ambient conditions and present good stability. The obtained results outpace those of amorphous Si TFTs and rival with the same oxide based TFTs produced on either glass or crystalline silicon substrates. The compatibility of these devices with large-scale/large-area deposition techniques and low cost substrates as well as their very low operating bias delineates this as a promising approach to attain high-performance disposable electronics like paper displays, smart labels, smart packaging, RFID and point-of-care systems for self analysis in bio-applications, among others.

An important print quality attribute of digital printing equipment deals with the absolute position of the printed image relative to the page. Historically, the most precise method of measuring image to paper (IOP) registration is by scanning a printed sheet on a flatbed scanner. These measurements have been limited to sheets smaller than the full capacity of the printer. In addition, the precision of the measurement has been limited by the accuracy of the scanner itself and the measurement of a few (~4) points on the page have limited the information that can be gathered. The new method proposed in this paper measures IOP registration throughout the sheet in a more precise manner. In a similar fashion, the relative position of the image on both the simplex and duplex side of the print can be determined. In addition, the new method helps link the source of registration errors to individual sub-systems. By generating the individual error sources from a printed sheet enables the understanding of the percentage contribution of each sub-system, prioritizes efforts to obtain better IOP performance, finds initial IOP setup errors of a printing engine, compares different technologies affecting IOP registration in sub-systems and potentially acts as a diagnostic tool for individual sub-systems.

Based on the unique characteristic, the paper currency numbers can be put into record and the automatic identification equipment for paper currency numbers is supplied to currency circulation market in order to provide convenience for financial sectors to trace the fiduciary circulation socially and provide effective supervision on paper currency. Simultaneously it is favorable for identifying forged notes, blacklisting the forged notes numbers and solving the major social problems, such as armor cash carrier robbery, money laundering. For the purpose of recognizing the paper currency numbers, a recognition algorithm based on neural network is presented in the paper. Number lines in original paper currency images can be draw out through image processing, such as image de-noising, skew correction, segmentation, and image normalization. According to the different characteristics between digits and letters in serial number, two kinds of classifiers are designed. With the characteristics of associative memory, optimization-compute and rapid convergence, the Discrete Hopfield Neural Network (DHNN) is utilized to recognize the letters; with the characteristics of simple structure, quick learning and global optimum, the Radial-Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) is adopted to identify the digits. Then the final recognition results are obtained by combining the two kinds of recognition results in regular sequence. Through the simulation tests, it is confirmed by simulation results that the recognition algorithm of combination of two kinds of recognition methods has such advantages as high recognition rate and faster recognition simultaneously, which is worthy of broad application prospect.

Quantitative analysis of pH indicator paper color is needed in the various fields. An indigenously developed Tristimulus colorimeter is used in this work for pH Indicator paper color measurement. The colorimeter uses Trichromatic RGB LEDs and a programmable color light to frequency converter (TCS230), combining configurable silicon photodiodes and a current to frequency converter on a single monolithic CMOS integrated circuit. The output is a square wave (50% duty cycle) with frequency directly proportional to light intensity. Digital input and digital output allow directly to a microcontroller. The light to frequency converter reads an 8*8 array of photodiodes. Sixteen photodiodes have red filters, 16 photodiodes have green filters, 16 photodiodes have blue filters, and 16 photodiodes are clear with no filters. All 16 photodiodes of the same colors are connected in parallel and type of photodiode the device uses during operation is pin selectable. Solutions having different standard pH were prepared and indicator paper was dipped in solution, it shows change in color. Using the developed RGB colorimeter chromaticity coordinates were measured and compared with the chromaticity coordinates measured using Ocean Optics HR-4000 high resolution spectrophotometer.

Piezoelectricity is one of major actuatin g mechanisms of a cellulose-based El ectro-Active paper (EAPap). Wet drawn stretching method was introduced in the fabrication process of cellulose film to increase piezoelectricity of EAPap. The characteristics of wet drawn cellulose were studied by scan ning electron microscope (SEM ), X-ray diffractogram (XRD) and pull test. The performance of EAPap was evaluated by measuring bending displacement and piezoelectric charge constant. The performance of EAPap was se nsitive to the fabrication process and material orientation of cellulose film. Aligning cellulose fibers in the fabrication process was a cri tical parameter to improve mechanical and electromechanical properties of EAPap. The experimental results provided that wet drawn stretching is an effective fabrication method to improve mechanical stiffness an d piezoelectricity of EAPap. Artifact-metrics is an automated method of authenticating artifacts based on a measurable intrinsic characteristic. Intrinsic characters, such as microscopic random-patterns made during the manufacturing process, are very difficult to copy. A transmitted light image of the distribution can be used for artifact-metrics, since the fiber distribution of paper is random. Little is known about the individuality of the transmitted light image although it is an important requirement for intrinsic characteristic artifact-metrics. Measuring individuality requires that the intrinsic characteristic of each artifact significantly differs, so having sufficient individuality can make an artifact-metric system highly resistant to brute force attack. Here we investigate the influence of paper category, matching size of sample, and image-resolution on the individuality of a transmitted light image of paper through a matching test using those images. More concretely, we evaluate FMR/FNMR curves by calculating similarity scores with matches using correlation coefficients between pairs of scanner input images, and the individuality of paper by way of estimated EER with probabilistic measure through a matching method based on line segments, which can localize the influence of rotation gaps of a sample in the case of large matching size. As a result, we found that the transmitted light image of paper has a sufficient individuality.

Laser alignment thermal sensitive paper can be used for laser applications such as spot size measurements, beam characteristics, and determining beam mode. Thermal sensitive paper interactions with a 1.54 micron, 35 ns, 3.75 J, Er-Glass laser produced spots that had three concentric zones of response. These spots interact with each other if a minimum distance between exposures is not maintained. The distance needed between spots is directly related to the energy density incident upon the paper. Although there was no lot designation for the box of thermal sensitive papers used in this research, we were able to determine that the response of different papers in the same box could vary under constant laser exposure parameters. Therefore, investigators need to be cautious when extrapolating experimental data from exposures using this type of laser alignment paper.

Due to the rise in performance of digital printing, image-based applications are gaining popularity. This creates needs for specifying the quality potential of printers and materials in more detail than before. Both production and end-use standpoints are relevant. This paper gives an overview of an on-going study which has the goal of determining a framework model for the visual quality potential of paper in color image printing. The approach is top-down and it is founded on the concept of a layered network model. The model and its subjective, objective and instrumental measurement layers are discussed. Some preliminary findings are presented. These are based on data from samples obtained by printing natural image contents and simple test fields on a wide range of paper grades by ink-jet in a color managed process. Color profiles were paper specific. Visual mean opinion score data by human observers could be accounted for by two or three dimensions. In the first place these are related to brightness and color brightness. Image content has a marked effect on the dimensions. This underlines the challenges in designing the test images.

Two different paper grades were tested with a clearing agent to measure how much mechanical smoothening can improve transparency inside paper. The paper grades were newsprint and supercalendered paper. The paper furnishes of both papers were alike, but the supercalendered paper was mechanically smoothened. Anise oil was used as the clearing agent, but similar measurements were also done with air and water. Black lines 8.5 μm to 281.1 μm wide were placed behind layers of cleared paper and transparency was measured with a microscope. When anise oil was the clearing agent, supercalendering improved transparent paper grammage from 139 g/m 2 to 164 g/m 2 . With water the improvement was from 40 g/m 2 to 51 g/m 2 . With air the improvement was not determinable. As a conclusion, it is recommended that paper is smoothened if it needs to be studied optically. Optical coherence tomography, for example, would benefit from this treatment.

Annotation watermarking (sometimes also called caption or illustration watermarking) denotes a specific application of watermarks, which embeds supplementary information directly in the media, so that additional information is intrinsically linked to media content and does not get separated from the media by non-malicious processing steps such as image cropping or compression. Recently, nested object annotation watermarking (NOAWM) has been introduced as a specialized annotation watermarking domain, whereby hierarchical object information is embedded in photographic images. In earlier work, the Hierarchical Graph Concept (HGC) has been suggested as a first approach to model object relations, which are defined by users during editing processes, into a hierarchical tree structure. The original HGC method uses a code-book decomposition of the annotation tree and a block-luminance algorithm for embedding. In this article, two new approaches for embedding nested object annotations are presented and experimentally compared to the original HGC approach. The first one adopts the code-book scheme of HGC using an alternative embedding based on Wet Paper Codes in blue-channel LSB domain, whereas the second suggests a new method based on the concept of intrinsic signal inheritance by sub-band energy and phase modulation of image luminance blocks. A comparative experimental evaluation based on more than 100 test images is presented in the paper, whereby aspects of transparency and robustness with respect to the most relevant image modifications to annotations, cropping and JPEG compression, are discussed comparatively for the two code-book schemes and the novel inheritance approach.

The whiteness level of a printing paper is considered as an important quality measure. High paper whiteness improves the contrast to printed areas providing a more distinct appearance of printed text and colors and increases the number of reproducible colors. Its influence on perceived color rendering quality is however not completely explained. The intuitive interpretation of paper whiteness is a material with high light reflection for all wavelengths in the visual part of the color spectrum. However, a slightly bluish shade is perceived as being whiter than a neutral white. Accordingly, papers with high whiteness values incline toward bluish-white. In paper production, a high whiteness level is achieved by the use of highly bleached pulp together with high light scattering filler pigment. To further increase whiteness levels expensive additives such as Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWA) and shading dyes are needed. During the last years, the CIE whiteness level of some commercial available office paper has exceeded 170 CIE units, a level that can only be reached by the addition of significant amounts of FWA. Although paper whiteness is considered as an important paper quality criterion, its influence on printed color images is complicated. The dynamic mechanisms of the human visual system strive to optimize the visual response to each particular viewing condition. One of these mechanisms is chromatic adaptation, where colored objects get the same appearance under different light sources, i.e. a white paper appears white under tungsten, fluorescent and day light. In the process of judging printed color images, paper whiteness will be part of the chromatic adaptation. This implies that variations in paper whiteness would be discounted by the human visual system. On the other hand, high paper whiteness improves the contrast as well as the color gamut, both important parameters for the perceived color reproduction quality. In order to quantify the influence of paper whiteness pilot papers with different amount of FWA but in all other respects similar were produced on a small scale experimental paper machine. The fact that only the FWA content changes reduces the influences of other properties separated from the paper whiteness in the evaluation process. A set of images, all having characteristics with the potential to reveal the influence of the varied whiteness level on color reproduction quality, were printed on the pilot papers in two different printers. Prior to printing the test images in the experiment, ICC-profiles were calculated for all the used printer-substrate combinations. A visual assessment study of the printed samples was carried out in order to relate the influence of the paper whiteness level to perceived color reproduction quality. The results show an improved color rendering quality with increased CIE whiteness value up to a certain level. Any further increase in paper whiteness does not contribute to an improved color reproduction quality. Furthermore, the fact that some printing inks are UV blocking while others are not will introduce a non uniform color shift in the printed image when the FWA activation changes. This non uniform color shift has been quantified both for variations in illuminant as well as variations of FWA content in the paper.
