The article examines the economic impact of higher education and K-12 sector in New England. The economic impact of public and private elementary and secondary schools have been ignored from the discussions on the contribution of education to workforce development and knowledge creation. It is found out in a study that elementary, middle and secondary schools spent over $443 million on construction and $4.8 billion was spent in public K-12 on salaries.

The article reports on findings from the economic impact assessment of New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC). It was found that the collective economic impact of accredited public and independent K-12 schools together with higher education institutions amounted to $114.7 billion in fiscal 2006. The number of full-time employees at NEASC-accredited higher education institutions in fiscal 2006 was greater than the combined total of doctors, police officers, construction laborers, dentists, pharmacists and computer programmers in the region.
